This study aimed to assess the physical performance of Pantaneiro horses with and without equine infectious anemia (EIA) under functional conditions of cattle management. The horses were subjected to a performance test and split into two groups according to a completely randomized design: animals were chosen from populations testing positive and negative for EIA. Performance was measured as a function of a data envelopment analysis (DEA) model considering four outputs and one unitary input. The output measures were the distance achieved in the performance test, hematocrit as a weighted average over the test duration, respiratory rate as weighted average over the test duration, and the level of lactic acid at the test termination. Weights for the hematocrit and the respiratory rate output variables were determined by means of factor analysis. The performance score was a weighted average of the output variables with the weights defined by the averages of the optimum individual multipliers in the DEA analysis. Contextual variables of interest were age, horse weight, room temperature, and corporal temperature. Only groups and room temperature were statistically significant effects, as indicated by a bootstrap analysis. The performance of group positive for EIA is significantly lower than that of the group negative for EIA and room temperature has a negative effect. Neste estudo, utilizou-se uma fronteira de produção do tipo não paramétrica na avaliação da produção agrícola dos municípios brasileiros. Com o uso de métodos de regressão fracionária, caracterizou-se a intensidade da associação entre eficiência técnica de produção e construtos contextuais, que representam medidas que refletem o direcionamento da pesquisa da Embrapa, a assistência técnica ao meio rural e itens típicos de formas de entrega de políticas públicas. Concluiu-se que estes, na realidade, são os únicos estatisticamente significantes para a melhoria da eficiência de produção no meio rural brasileiro. We propose alternative regression models to assess the effects of covariates in output oriented DEA scores. We use probability choice models combined with specifications related to the gamma and to the truncated normal families of distributions. These specifications imply different two stage regression models and alternative quasi maximum likelihood estimators. We apply these methods to assess the significance of technical effects ? type of unit, processes improvement and technology impact ? affecting DEA efficiency scores computed to agricultural research production in Brazil, measured through Embrapa. We favor models taking into account the whole sample of efficiency scores and not only the inefficient units. In our application we conclude that type of unit and processes improvement are significant effects, with the latter effect negatively associated to the efficiency of the units classified into the type of unit considered more efficient.
