Novel cross-linked fluorinated acrylate latex was successfully synthesized via the semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization, in which methyl methacrylate (MMA) and butyl acrylate (BA) were used as the main monomers, and dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA) and N–N methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) were used as the fluorine monomer and the cross-linked monomer, respectively. Potassium persulfate (KPS) and mixed surfactants of sodium lauryl sulfate and alkyl alcohol polyether (EFS-470) were used as the initiator and emulsifier, respectively. The structure of resultant latex film was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The latex films were tested by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), contact angle (CA), cross-linked degree and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The particle size and its distribution of the latex were measured by the nanoparticle size analyzer and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The factors that have an influence on the properties of the latex and the film are investigated in detail. The stability of the resultant latex was good. The average particles of the latex and its distribution were small and uniform, respectively. Usually, the traditional acrylate polymer latex, which is used as the binder of the coatings, is a linear polymer and properties of the latex film cannot meet with the demand of the high-grade coatings. Presently, there are few reports on the polyacrylate latex modified by diallyl malate, i.e. butanedioic acid,2-hydroxy-, 1,4-di-2-propen-1-yl ester (BAHD) and long fluorocarbon acrylate monomer such as dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA) in the open literatures. The purpose of this work is that the cross-linked acrylate latex is prepared which DFMA and BAHD are used as the functional monomer and as a cross-linking monomer, respectively. The cross-linked acrylate latex is prepared which methyl methacrylate (MMA) and butyl acrylate (BA) is used as the main monomers and the non-ionic emulsifier isomeric alcohol polyoxyethylene ether (X-407) and the anionic emulsifier sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) are used as emulsifiers. DFMA and BAHD are used as the functional monomer and as a cross-linking monomer, respectively. Factors which have an influence on the properties of the resultant latex and the emulsion polymerization are investigated in detail. The optimal recipe of preparing the latex is obtained as follows: the amount of mixed emulsifiers is 6% and mass ratio of X-470 to SDS is 2:1. When the amount of BAHD is 4.47%, the water absorption rate is reduced greatly. The glass transition temperature is 10 °C. In compassion with the conventional latex, the thermal decomposition temperature is increased by 10 °C. The resultant latex has good stability and small particle size. Purpose: Self-crosslinked long fluorocarbon acrylate polymer latex has good hydrophobic and oleophobicity, weather resistance, aging resistance, stability and other excellent properties, which make the polymer be widely used in coatings, dyes, adhesives and other products. The purpose of this study is to prepare self-crosslinked long fluorocarbon acrylate polymer latex via semi-continuous seeded emulsion technology and carry out comparative study on two different cross-linked monomers. Design/methodology/approach: Methyl methacrylate (MMA) and butyl acrylate (BA) were used as the main monomers, dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA) as the fluoromonomer, hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) and N-methylol acrylamide (NMA) as cross-linked monomers, and 1-allyloxy-3–(4-nonylphenol)-2-propanol polyoxyethylene (10) ether (ANPEO10) and 1-allyloxy-3–(4-nonylphenol)-2-propanol polyoxyethylene (10) ether ammonium sulfate (DNS-86) as compound emulsifiers via the semicontinuous-seeded emulsion polymerization. Findings: The properties of the polymer emulsions, which are prepared with two different cross-linked monomers, are compared and discussed, and it is concluded that HPMA is more suitable for the preparation of self-crosslinked polymer emulsions. The formula of the polymer latex is ANPEO10: DNS-86 = 1:1, and the mass ratio of the monomers used in the polymer is MMA: BA: DFMA: HPMA = 14.40:14.40:0.60:0.60. Practical implications: Self-crosslinked long fluorocarbon acrylate polymer latex can be used in many fields such as coatings, dyes, adhesives and other products. Purpose: There are three double bonds in the chemical structure of diallyl maleate. The purpose of this study is that the acrylate is modified with diallyl maleic anhydride to make the propionate resin present a spatial network structure, thereby improving the performance of the acrylate resin. Diallyl maleate (DAM) was used as crosslinking monomer and dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA) was used as fluoromonomer. Originality/value: The experimental results showed that the thermal decomposition temperature of the acrylic coating film increased by 20.56°C after modification. In addition, the effect of cross-linking density on the water contact angle of the fluorocarbon groups in DFMA when they migrate to the surface of the latex film during drying has been explored. The organosilicon modified cationic acrylic resin is prepared via solution polymerization technology, which butyl acrylate (BA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), styrene (St), vinyltriethoxysilane(VTES), dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and hydroxy propyl methacrylate (HPMA) as the co-polymerized monomers, and proprylene glycol monomethyl ether (PGME) as solvent, and 2,2-azo-bis-iso-butyronitrile (AIBN) as the initiator to create a resin to introduce the Si-O bond into the polymer chains. The cathodic electrodeposition (CED) coatings were prepared by mixing the synthetic resin and blocked isocyanate. The influence of the amount of VETS on the resin and the resultant CED coatings is investigated in detail. The optimum amount of VETS is obtained, which is 5.0%. The purpose of this paper is to prepare self-crosslinking fluorocarbon polyacrylate latexes containing different fluorocarbon chain lengths by semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization technology. Design/methodology/approach: Methyl methacrylate (MMA), butyl acrylate (BA), hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) and fluorine-containing monomers were used as main monomers. The radical copolymerization was used to synthesize cationic acrylic resin, which the methyl methacrylate (MMA) was used as the main hard monomer and styrene (St) was added to replace the function of MMA to reduce the cost of raw materials. Butyl acrylate (BA) was used as the main soft monomer to reduce the glass transition temperature of the polymer. Hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) was used to provide cross-linked hydroxyl groups for resin, and hydroxyl groups also had a certain hydrophilic properties. Dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) was used to provide tertiary amine group for the resin, which was acidified by organic acid to form ammonium salt. The cathodic electrodeposition (CED) coatings were prepared by mixing the resultant resin and blocked isocyanate. The conditions of synthesizing the cationic acrylic resin were optimized. The optimum synthetic conditions were the following. The mass ratio of (MMA + St) to BA was 3:2. The amount of DMAEMA was 12–15% in total monomer. The amount of HPMA was 20% in total monomer. The amount of the initiator was 2%. The neutralization degree was 80%. The reaction temperature was 90 °C. Both the conductivity of electrophoretic coating and its film were good when the cationic acrylic resin was synthesized under the optimum conditions. The divinyl silane modified self-crosslinking polyacrylate latex was successfully prepared by semicontinuous seeded emulsion polymerization. Methyl methacrylate (MMA) and butyl acrylate (BA) were used as main monomers and the reaction was initiated by potassium persulfate (KPS). The modified monomer 1, 3-divinyltetramethyldisiloxane (DVMS) and crosslinked monomer hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) were introduced into the basic dispersion. Sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) anionic surfactant and alkyl polyglycoside (APG) nonionic emulsifier were utilized as composite emulsifiers. The structure of latex film was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The latex films were tested by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and contact angle (CA) and apparent crosslinking percentage. The particle size of the emulsion was measured by Zetatrac dynamic light scattering instrument. The optimum conditions are as follows: the amount of composite emulsifier is 5.0%, the mass ratio of SDS to APG is 1:1, the amount of initiator is 0.5%, the amount of DVMS is 5.0%, and the amount of HEA is 1.0%. The emulsion has good mechanical stability and chemical stability, and the storage stability is ideal. The dispersion is blue and translucent, with a small particle size. The apparent crosslinking percentage of the latex film is above 89%, and the highest contact angle was more than 98°. Purpose: Silane cross-linkers have been used to strengthen the mechanical stabilities and friction resistance of plastic products. Therefore, the effect of silane cross-linkers on latex has been studied through preparing modified self-cross-linking long fluorocarbon polyacrylate latex. In this paper, nonionic surfactant alcohol ether glycoside (AEG1000) and anionic polymerizable surfactant 1-allyloxy-3-(4-nonylphenol)-2-propanol polyoxyethylene (10) ether ammonium sulfate (DNS-86) acted as mixed emulsifier and 3-(methacryloyloxy) propyltrimethoxysilane (KH-570) and bis (2-ethylhexyl) maleate (DOM) were used as functional monomers. Design/methodology/approach: The modified acrylate polymer latex was synthesized through the semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization with methyl methacrylate (MMA), butyl acrylate (BA), dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA) and hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) as main monomers. Potassium persulfate (KPS) was applied to initiate polymerization reaction, nonionic surfactant AEG1000 and DNS-86 acted as emulsifier, KH-570 and DOM were used as functional monomers, respectively. Findings: The optimum conditions of synthesizing the modified latex were the following. The mass ratio of monomers containing MMA, BA, DFMA, HPMA, KH-570 and DOM was 13.58:13.58:0.90:1.20:0.15:0.60, the usage of initiator KPS was 0.5% of the total weight of monomers and the amount of emulsifier was 7% of all monomers with AEG1000:DNS-86 = 1:1. The results indicated that the conversion of monomer was 99% and the coagulation was about 2.0%. Originality/value: The resultant latex was modified silane cross-linker KH-570 and DOM, which positively affected the comprehensive properties of latex and its film. The long carbon chain monomer modified polyacrylate latex was successfully prepared by semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization. In this work, methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate were used as main monomers; stearyl acrylate was used as functional monomer, which were emulsified with the novel mixed surfactants of disodium laureth sulfosuccinate (AEMES) and alkylphenol ethoxylates (OP-10) and initiated with 2,2′-azobis (2-methyl propion- amidine) dihydrochloride initiator. The structure of the resultant latex was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis and contact angle were used to test the properties of the latex film. The particle size of the latex was measured by the Zetatrac dynamic light scattering detector. Factors, which have an influence on the properties of the latex and its film, have been investigated in detail. The novel fluoro-silicone polyacrylate latex was successfully synthesized in the presence of a novel green mixed emulsifier of β -cyclodextrin (β -CD) and sodium lauroyl glutamate (SLG) by semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization, which was initiated with potassium persulphate. Methyl methacrylate (MMA) and butyl acrylate (BA) were used as the main monomers, while hexafluorobutyl methacrylate (HFMA) and vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) were used as the functional monomers. The resultant latex and its film were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and contact angle determinator, respectively. The optimum conditions of preparing the fluoro-silicone polyacrylate latex are as follows: the amount of compound emulsifiers are 7.0%; β -CD: SLG = 1:2; the amount of initiator is 0.7%; the appropriate proportion of main monomer of MMA: BA = 1:1; and the amounts of HFMA and VTES are 6.0% and 4.0%, respectively. In this case, the resultant latex has high conversion rate, low gel rate and good stability. Fluorinated acrylate latex was prepared by copolymerizing fluorinated monomer, butyl acrylate, and methyl methacrylate, which was initiated by potassium persulfate in the water. The resultant fluorinated latex and its film were characterized with contact angle determinator, dynamic light scattering detector, and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. Influence of type of fluorinated monomers on colloidal and polymer properties of fluorinated acrylate latex was studied.
