In this present work, pongamiabiodiesel and pentanolwere blended at different proportions used in a direct injection single cylinder diesel engine. Researchers gathered interest among various higher alcohols in biodiesels because of its high cetane number, high heating content, and better blending stability than lower alcohols (methanol, ethanol etc.). In this experimental work, Pentanol blended upto 30% in pongamia biodieseland its influence on emissionscharacteristics to beinvestigated. The test fuel blends are neat diesel, neat ponagmia biodiesel, 10% of pentanol + 90% of ponagmiabiodiesel, 20% of pentanol + 80% of ponagmia biodiesel, 30% of pentanol + 70% of ponagmia biodiesel. Experimental results revealed that the inclusion of pentanol reduces nitrogen oxides emissions hugely whereassmoke opacity reduced marginally. A noteworthy reduction inotheremissions was also found when adding pentanol in pongamiabiodiesel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
