In this study, we evaluated the effect of land cover, atmospheric subsidence, and advection on the annual dynamics of atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) height from two contrasting sites. The first site is the Walker Branch forest, a deciduous forest of temperate climate, complex topography, and cloudy summers. The second site is the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, a site of Mediterranean climate, flat terrain on a local scale, and clear summers. After testing a new algorithm to calculate ABL heights from 915 MHz radar wind profilers, we evaluated a hierarchy of three slab models to recreate the diurnal and annual patterns of ABL growth. We found that the lower ABL heights in the Delta, particularly during late summer, are driven by the combined effects of increased atmospheric subsidence and marine air advection. In both sites, the annual pattern of ABL height was strongly correlated to total daily incoming radiation, and in the Delta, the annual pattern of ABL height closely followed the seasonal patterns of sensible heat flux from a mosaic of different land covers. A land composite of latent and sensible heat fluxes obtained through a meso-network of eddy covariance measurements and the ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS) mission resulted in higher model skill, thus showing that land cover heterogeneity is an important driver of ABL growth. Model simulations show that in the Delta, restoring agricultural land to wetlands with large open water areas could result in a reduction of ABL height during those months with low subsidence and advection.

Radiation frost happens frequently in the Yangtze River Delta region, which causes high economic loss in agriculture industry. It occurs because of heat losses from the atmosphere, plant and soil in the form of radiant energy, which is strongly associated with the micrometeorological characteristics. Multidimensional and nonlinear micrometeorological data enhances the difficulty in predicting the radiation frost. Support vector machines (SVMs), a type of algorithms, can be supervised learning which widely be employed for classification or regression problems in research of precision agriculture. This paper is the first attempt of using SVMs to build prediction models for radiation frost. Thirty-two kinds of micrometeorological parameters, such as daily mean temperature at six heights (Tmean0.5, Tmean1.5, Tmean2.0, Tmean3.0, Tmean4.5 and Tmean6.0), daily maximum and minimum temperatures at six heights (Tmax0.5, Tmax1.5, Tmax2.0, Tmax3.0, Tmax4.5 and Tmax6.0, and Tmin0.5, Tmin1.5, Tmin2.0, Tmin3.0, Tmin4.5 and Tmin6.0), daily mean relative humidity at six heights (RH0.5, RH1.5, RH2.0, RH3.0, RH4.5 and RH6.0), net radiation (Rn), downward short-wave radiation (Rsd), downward long-wave radiation (Rld), upward long-wave radiation (Rlu), upward short-wave radiation (Rsu), soil temperature (Tsoil) and soil heat flux (G) and daily average wind speed (u) were collected from November 2016 to July 2018. Six combinations inputs were used as the basis dataset for testing and training. Three types of kernel functions, such as linear kernel, radial basis function kernel and polynomial kernel function were used to develop the SVMs models. Five-fold cross validation was conducted for model fitting on training dataset to alleviate over-fitting and make prediction results more reliable. The results showed that an SVM with the radial basis function kernel (SVM-BRF) model with all the 32 micrometeorological data obtained high prediction accuracy in training and testing sets. When the single type of data (temperature, humidity and radiation data) was used for the SVM without any functions, prediction accuracy was better than that with functions. The SVM-BRF model had the best prediction accuracy when using the multidimensional and nonlinear micrometeorological data. Considering the complexity level of the model and the accuracy of prediction, micrometeorological data at the canopy height with the SVM-BRF model has been recommended for radiation frost prediction in Yangtze River Delta and probably could be applied in elsewhere with the similar terrains and micro-climates.

Measurements of the horizontal and vertical fluxes of energy and mass were taken at a crop canopy edge and downwind of it to examine the effects of inhomogeneity on surface–atmosphere exchange, for the ideal case of flat uniform terrain. Energy balance closure was also examined and the effects of the often-neglected advection terms on the energy budget were evaluated. The results show that neither vertical nor horizontal advection should be neglected for moderate distances downwind from heterogeneous boundaries, with the energy budget closure near the leading edge improved by more than 20% with the inclusion of the horizontal and vertical advection of latent and sensible heat. Significant mean advective horizontal and vertical flux divergences of water vapor and temperature were found even in typical daytime conditions. In stable conditions horizontal advection can be responsible for more than 15% of the scalar (water vapor) transport 136 canopy heights downwind of a change in water vapor source density and surface roughness.

Eddy covariance flux towers provide continuous measurements of net ecosystem carbon exchange (NEE) for a wide range of climate and biome types. However, these measurements only represent the carbon fluxes at the scale of the tower footprint. To quantify the net exchange of carbon dioxide between the terrestrial biosphere and the atmosphere for regions or continents, flux tower measurements need to be extrapolated to these large areas. Here we used remotely sensed data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) instrument on board the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Terra satellite to scale up AmeriFlux NEE measurements to the continental scale. We first combined MODIS and AmeriFlux data for representative U.S. ecosystems to develop a predictive NEE model using a modified regression tree approach. The predictive model was trained and validated using eddy flux NEE data over the periods 2000-2004 and 2005-2006, respectively. We found that the model predicted NEE well (r = 0.73, p < 0.001). We then applied the model to the continental scale and estimated NEE for each 1 km x 1 km cell across the conterminous U.S. for each 8-day interval in 2005 using spatially explicit MODIS data. The model generally captured the expected spatial and seasonal patterns of NEE as determined from measurements and the literature. Our study demonstrated that our empirical approach is effective for scaling up eddy flux NEE measurements to the continental scale and producing wall-to-wall NEE estimates across multiple biomes. Our estimates may provide an independent dataset from simulations with biogeochemical models and inverse modeling approaches for examining the spatiotemporal patterns of NEE and constraining terrestrial carbon budgets over large areas.

International audience; Light use efficiency (LUE) models are widely used to simulate gross primary production (GPP). However, the treatment of the plant canopy as a big leaf by these models can introduce large uncertainties in simulated GPP. Recently, a two-leaf light use efficiency (TL-LUE) model was developed to simulate GPP separately for sunlit and shaded leaves and has been shown to outperform the big-leaf MOD17 model at six FLUX sites in China. In this study we investigated the performance of the TL-LUE model for a wider range of biomes. For this we optimized the parameters and tested the TL-LUE model using data from 98 FLUXNET sites which are distributed across the globe. The results showed that the TL-LUE model performed in general better than the MOD17 model in simulating 8 day GPP. Optimized maximum light use efficiency of shaded leaves (epsilon(msh)) was 2.63 to 4.59 times that of sunlit leaves (epsilon(msu)). Generally, the relationships of epsilon(msh) and epsilon(msu) with epsilon(max) were well described by linear equations, indicating the existence of general patterns across biomes. GPP simulated by the TL-LUE model was much less sensitive to biases in the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) input than the MOD17 model. The results of this study suggest that the proposed TL-LUE model has the potential for simulating regional and global GPP of terrestrial ecosystems, and it is more robust with regard to usual biases in input data than existing approaches which neglect the bimodal within-canopy distribution of PAR.

Wind loadings on trees, quantified by wind moment, are studied at a forest edge by employing a large eddy simulation. Trees at the forest edge are subject to large mean values of wind moment. If the relative magnitude of wind moment is concerned, however, wind moment appears to be more violent in the equilibrium region far downstream of the forest edge. This is explained by that wind moments at locations further than eight tree heights downwind of the edge are characterized by larger maximum-to-mean ratios, greater intensities of fluctuation and skewness, and higher frequency of extreme value than in the edge zone. These distinct spatial features between the absolute magnitude and relative magnitude of wind moment have different implications in regard to stand vulnerabilities between young and old forests. Two approaches are used to investigate the controlling mechanisms for wind moment: (1) cross-correlation analysis and (2) comparison of extreme values in wind moment to those in flow-driving terms. The results demonstrate that pressure gradient force and streamwise advection of upstream momentum are highly correlated with, and likely induce the extreme values in wind moment at the forest edge. In the equilibrium region, however, intermittent impulsive downward momentum fluxes associated with the passage of coherent structures are the ultimate mechanism in causing extremes in wind moment.

Momentum and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) budgets across a forest edge have been investigated using large-eddy simulation (LES). Edge effects are observed in the rapid variation of a number of budget terms across this vegetation transition. The enhanced drag force at the forest edge is largely balanced by the pressure gradient force and by streamwise advection of upstream momentum, while vertical turbulent diffusion is relatively insignificant. For variance and TKE budgets, the most important processes at the forest edge are production due to the convergence (or divergence) of the mean flow, streamwise advection, pressure diffusion and enhanced dissipation by canopy drag. Turbulent diffusion, pressure redistribution and vertical shear production, which are characteristic processes in homogeneous canopy flow, are less important at the forest transition. We demonstrate that, in the equilibrated canopy flow, a substantial amount of TKE produced in the streamwise direction by the vertical shear of the mean flow is redistributed in the vertical direction by pressure fluctuations. This redistribution process occurs in the upper canopy layers. Part of the TKE in the vertical velocity component is transferred by turbulent and pressure diffusion to the lower canopy levels, where pressure redistribution takes place again and feeds TKE back to the streamwise direction. In this TKE cycle, the primary source terms are vertical shear production for streamwise velocity variance and pressure redistribution for vertical velocity variance. The evolution of these primary source terms downwind of the forest edge largely controls the adjustment rates of velocity variances.

The statistics of turbulent flow across a forest edge have been examined using large-eddy simulation, and results compared with field and wind-tunnel observations. The moorland-to-forest transition is characterized by flow deceleration in the streamwise direction, upward distortion of the mean flow, formation of a high pressure zone immediately in front of the edge, suppression of the standard deviations and covariance of velocity components, and enhancement of velocity skewnesses. For the selected forest density, it is observed that the maximum distortion angle is about 8 degrees from the horizontal. Instead of approaching a downwind equilibrium state in a monotonic manner, turbulence (standard deviations and covariances of velocity components) and mean streamwise velocity undershoot in the transition zone behind the edge. Evolution of flow statistics clearly reveals the growth of an internal boundary layer, and the establishment of an equilibrium layer downwind of the edge. It is evident that lower-order moments generally adjust more quickly over the new rough surface than do higher-order moments. We also show that the streamwise velocity standard deviation at canopy height starts its recovery over the rough surface sooner than does the vertical velocity standard deviation, but completes full adjustment later than the latter. Despite the limited domain size upstream of the edge, large-eddy simulation has successfully reproduced turbulent statistics in good agreement with field and wind-tunnel measurements.

Local advection of scalar quantities such as heat, moisture, or carbon dioxide occurs not only above inhomogeneous surfaces but also within roughness elements on these surfaces. A two-dimensional advection–diffusion equation is applied to examine the fractionation of scalar exchange into horizontal advection within a canopy and vertical turbulent eddy transport at the canopy top. Simulations were executed with combinations of various wind speeds, eddy diffusivities, canopy heights, and source strengths. The results show that the vertical turbulent fluxes at the canopy top increase along the fetch and approach a limit at some downstream distance. The horizontal advection in the canopy is maximum at the edge of canopy and decreases exponentially along the fetch. All cases have the same features, except the absolute quantities depend on the environmental conditions. When the horizontal axis is normalized by using the dimensionless variable xK/uh2, horizontal diffusion is negligible, and the upwind concentration profile is constant, the curves of horizontal advection and vertical flux collapse into single, unique lines, respectively (x is the horizontal distance from the canopy edge, K is the eddy diffusivity, u is the wind speed, and h is the canopy height). The ratios of horizontal advection to the vertical turbulent flux also collapse into one universal curve when plotted against the dimensionless variable xK/uh2, irrespective of source strength. The ratio R shows a power-law relation to the dimensionless distance [R = a(xK/uh2)−b, where a and b are constant].

Within the past decade or so, the accuracy of evapotranspiration ( ET ) estimates has improved due to new and increasingly sophisticated methods. Yet despite a plethora of choices concerning methods, estimation of wetland ET remains insufficiently characterized due to the complexity of surface characteristics and the diversity of wetland types. In this review, we present models and micrometeorological methods that have been used to estimate wetland ET and discuss their suitability for particular wetland types. Hydrological, soil monitoring and lysimetric methods to determine ET are not discussed. Our review shows that, due to the variability and complexity of wetlands, there is no single approach that is the best for estimating wetland ET . Furthermore, there is no single foolproof method to obtain an accurate, independent measure of wetland ET . Because all of the methods reviewed, with the exception of eddy covariance and LIDAR, require measurements of net radiation ( R n ) and soil heat flux ( G ), highly accurate measurements of these energy components are key to improving measurements of wetland ET . Many of the major methods used to determine ET can be applied successfully to wetlands of uniform vegetation and adequate fetch, however, certain caveats apply. For example, with accurate R n and G data and small Bowen ratio (β) values, the Bowen ratio energy balance method can give accurate estimates of wetland ET . However, large errors in latent heat flux density can occur near sunrise and sunset when the Bowen ratio β≈-1·0. The eddy covariance method provides a direct measurement of latent heat flux density ( E ) and sensible heat flux density ( H ), yet this method requires considerable expertise and expensive instrumentation to implement. A clear advantage of using the eddy covariance method is that E can be compared with R n -G-H , thereby allowing for an independent test of accuracy. The surface renewal method is inexpensive to replicate and, therefore, shows particular promise for characterizing variability in ET as a result of spatial heterogeneity. LIDAR is another method that has special utility in a heterogeneous wetland environment, because it provides an integrated value for ET from a surface. The main drawback of LIDAR is the high cost of equipment and the need for an independent ET measure to assess accuracy. If R n and G are measured accurately, the Priestley-Taylor equation can be used successfully with site-specific calibration factors to estimate wetland ET . The 'crop' cover coefficient ( K c ) method can provide accurate wetland ET estimates if calibrated for the environmental and climatic characteristics of a particular area. More complicated equations such as the Penman and Penman-Monteith equations also can be used to estimate wetland ET , but surface variability and lack of information on aerodynamic and surface resistances make use of such equations somewhat questionable.

Large-eddy simulation is used to reproduce neutrallystratified airflow inside and immediately above a vegetation canopy. A passive scalaris released from the canopy and the evolution of scalar concentration above the canopyis studied. The most significant characteristic of the scalar concentration is the repeatedformation and dissipation of scalar microfronts, a phenomenon that has been observedin nature. These scalar microfronts consist of downstream-tilted regions of highscalar concentration gradients. Computer visualization tools and a conditional samplingand compositing technique are utilized to analyze these microfronts. Peaks in positivepressure perturbation exceeding an experimental threshold are found to be effectiveindicators of scalar microfronts. Convergence of the streamwise velocity componentand divergence of the cross-stream velocity component are observed in the immediatevicinity of scalar microfronts, which helps explain their relatively longlifetimes. Many of these three-dimensional features have been observedin previous field studies of canopy flow.

IntroductionDuring disasters and complex emergencies, environmental conditions can adversely affect the performance of point-of-care (POC) testing. Knowledge of these conditions can help device developers and operators understand the significance of temperature and humidity limits necessary for use of POC devices. First responders will benefit from improved performance for on-site decision making.ObjectiveTo create dynamic temperature and humidity profiles that can be used to assess the environmental robustness of POC devices, reagents, and other resources (eg, drugs), and thereby, to improve preparedness.MethodsSurface temperature and humidity data from the National Climatic Data Center (Asheville, North Carolina USA) was obtained, median hourly temperature and humidity were calculated, and then mathematically stretched profiles were created to include extreme highs and lows. Profiles were created for: (1) Banda Aceh, Indonesia at the time of the 2004 Tsunami; (2) New Orleans, Louisiana USA just before and after Hurricane Katrina made landfall in 2005; (3) Springfield, Massachusetts USA for an ambulance call during the month of January 2009; (4) Port-au-Prince, Haiti following the 2010 earthquake; (5) Sendai, Japan for the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami with comparison to the colder month of January 2011; (6) New York, New York USA after Hurricane Sandy made landfall in 2012; and (7) a 24-hour rescue from Hawaii USA to the Marshall Islands. Profiles were validated by randomly selecting 10 days and determining if (1) temperature and humidity points fell inside and (2) daily variations were encompassed. Mean kinetic temperatures (MKT) were also assessed for each profile.ResultsProfiles accurately modeled conditions during emergency and disaster events and enclosed 100% of maximum and minimum temperature and humidity points. Daily variations also were represented well with 88.6% (62/70) of temperature readings and 71.1% (54/70) of relative humidity readings falling within diurnal patterns. Days not represented well primarily had continuously high humidity. Mean kinetic temperature was useful for severity ranking.ConclusionsSimulating temperature and humidity conditions clearly reveals operational challenges encountered during disasters and emergencies. Understanding of environmental stresses and MKT leads to insights regarding operational robustness necessary for safe and accurate use of POC devices and reagents. International audience; A new method for estimating scalar fluxes, called surface renewal analysis, was developed and successfully tested with air temperature data from a maize crop, an orchard, and a forest canopy. The method employs the scalar trace and is based on the concept of turbulent coherent structures causing most of the scalar fluxes. It was generally more accurate than other scalar based methods such as the Tillman variance method, and can be applied to data gathered under stable stability conditions. Filtering the temperature trace, based on the wind speed at the canopy height, resulted in more accurate surface renewal estimates than when raw 10 Hz data were used.

Ramp patterns in scalar traces such as temperature are the signature of coherent structures. A pseudo-wavelet analysis technique was developed in which ideal saw-tooth patterns of varying size were used as basis functions and fitted to temperature and velocity data. Data recorded from three very different vegetation stands were examined in this study. It was found that the most probable structure duration for the forest canopy was in the range 35-40 s, for the orchard canopy it was 20-25 s and for the maize it was 15-20 s. When expressed in non-dimensional form, the structure duration probability distribution for the maize canopy was about a decade larger than for the forest canopy, with the orchard canopy intermediate. The mean eddy duration versus wind shear relation falls on a narrow band for all three canopies, indicating that wind shear at the canopy top is the determining factor for the scale of the coherent eddies. The inverse of duration and intermittency of coherent structures exhibits a tendency of independence from wind shear at higher wind shear values. Coherent structures transport heat in a more efficient way than do smaller scale, less coherent motions. In all the canopies, the heat flux fractions associated with coherent structures are at least 10% higher than the corresponding time fraction.

The Canopy Horizontal Array Turbulence Study (CHATS) took place in spring 2007 and is the third in the series of Horizontal Array Turbulence Study (HATS) experiments. The HATS experiments have been instrumental in testing and developing subfilterscale (SFS) models for large-eddy simulation (LES) of planetary boundary layer (PBL) turbulence. The CHATS campaign took place in a deciduous walnut orchard near Dixon, California, and was designed to examine the impacts of vegetation on SFS turbulence. Measurements were collected both prior to and following leafout to capture the impact of leaves on the turbulence, stratification, and scalar source/sink distribution. CHATS utilized crosswind arrays of fast-response instrumentation to investigate the impact of the canopy-imposed distribution of momentum extraction and scalar sources on SFS transport of momentum, energy, and three scalars. To directly test and link with PBL parameterizations of canopy-modified turbulent exchange, CHATS also included a 30-m profile tower instrumented with turbulence instrumentation, fast and slow chemical sensors, aerosol samplers, and radiation instrumentation. A highresolution scanning backscatter lidar characterized the turbulence structure above and within the canopy; a scanning Doppler lidar, mini sodar/radio acoustic sounding system (RASS), and a new helicopter-observing platform provided details of the PBL-scale flow. Ultimately, the CHATS dataset will lead to improved parameterizations of energy and scalar transport to and from vegetation, which are a critical component of global and regional land, atmosphere, and chemical models. This manuscript presents an overview of the experiment, documents the regime sampled, and highlights some preliminary key findings.

Measurements of near-surface longitudinal and vertical wind velocity components associated with particle reentrainment from a flat surface have been examined in a wind tunnel. Sparsely covered particle beds were used to assure that observed reentrainment events resulted primarily from the action of fluid forces. Characteristic velocity patterns were found to be associated with a majority of particle reentrainment events examined. These characteristics have been categorized and examined as ensemble averages. The flow pattern most frequently observed during particle reentrainment was termed Ejection-Sweep (E-S) and is very similar to organized fluid motions previously observed in laboratory flows and in the atmospheric boundary layer. A simple two-tiered E-S pattern recognition scheme is described which strives to identify particle reentrainment events objectively based on flow characteristics alone. The first step is to identify potential E-S patterns using criteria which identify a characteristic longitudinal acceleration, and the second step is to use threshold values of pattern characteristics to accept or reject these first-tier patterns. Pattern recognition results are presented in terms of the ability to identify reentrainment events versus false identifications, and show an exponential growth in false identifications with an increasing number of reentrainment events identified.

A net deposition model (dependent on friction velocity) that accounts for ideal deposition of aerosols to a surface, rebound of particles impacting the surface, and reentrainment of particles previously deposited on the surface has been developed. The model time step is based on a scaled time interval between coherent boundary layer structures (bursts), with deposition, rebound, and reentrainment determined for each time step. Deposition and rebound are functions of friction velocity, and reentrainment is based on a Monte-Carlo simulation using a surface renewal concept. The model was used to simulate net deposition of six different particle-surface pairs. Results were found to generally describe experimental data well, although some differences were present.

International audience; The existence of ramp structures in scalar fields such as air temperature has been reported in laboratory flows over smooth and rough walls, in the atmospheric boundary layer and in flows in and above forests. They have been recognized as the signature of coherent turbulent structures. The aim of this paper is to present some observations and analyses of these features in the agricultural environment. Evidence is given from samples of time traces recorded during experiments conducted in maize crops and orchards. Ramps of air temperature, surface temperature, humidity and CO2 concentrations are shown to occur under stable, neutral and unstable conditions. Ramp structures are more apparent above short canopies than within them, in contrast to taller tree canopies where ramps are seen most clearly near the canopy top. Under stable conditions, they are sometimes found in association with trapped gravity waves. It is demonstrated that the frequency of occurrence of the coherent structures is related to a wind shear scale characteristic of the canopy flow.

Objective methods for the identification of coherent turbulent structures observed in the air layers within and above a forest are described. The techniques are based on the detection of scalar ramps, such as those frequently appearing in temperature traces, and on the detection of ejection/sweep flow structures. Coherent structures are revealed most distinctly by characteristic ramp patterns in scalar traces. A relatively simple multipoint technique to pick up the abrupt decrease of temperature terminating each ramp was successful, as was the variable-interval time-averaging (VITA) method with respect to detection at a single level. Identification of coherent ejection/sweep flow structures was accomplished by examination of the components of the fluctuating velocity, along the major axis of the elliptical joint probability contours of the longitudinal and vertical turbulent velocities. Integration of the absolute value of this rotated velocity over each period encompassing a negative excursion followed by a positive one (approximating an ejection/sweep combination), yielded a detection signal that matched well that from the temperature ramps. Detection of large accelerations in the rotated velocity, indicating rapid transitions from ejection to sweep, was less successful because such velocity changes were not easily distinguished from background turbulence.

Several recent crop stress and yield models depend on the difference between air and leaf temperature. When this difference is zero, the ‘equivalence point temperature’ is defined, if the crop is well-watered under sunny conditions. A simple energy budget equation is presented, which shows that the theoretical equivalence point temperature is quantitatively related to the absorbed radiation load, the vapor pressure deficit, the surface and aerodynamic resistance to water vapor transport, and the emissivity of the leaf. This implies that the theoretical equivalence point varies diurnally, rising in the morning, reaching a relative maximum near midday and falling in the afternoon and evening. At certain times and under certain conditions, the theoretical equivalence point may be physically impossible. The widely reported value of the equivalence point temperature, 33°C, is not supported by theory or empirical evidence.

A steady state mesoscale model developed to predict primary SO/sub 2/ concentrations from a single point source is presented. The model was validated with data from the Midwest Interstate Sulfur Transport and Transformation (MISTT) project, with root mean square errors at 9.69 ..mu..g m..sqrt../sub 3/ and 0.42 ..mu..gm..sqrt../sub 3/ for SO/sub 2/ and SO/sub 4/ respectively. Wet deposition of SO/sub 2/ and mean wind speed were found to be the most important factors controlling sulfur dioxide and sulfate concentrations. Estimation of precipitation acidity was then carried out using savenging theory. The greatest potential acidification occurred approximately 200 km from the source along plume centerline, which indicates a rather local effect as opposed to a long distance effect. A higher-order closure model was developed to simulate airflow within and above vegetative environments. The model consists of equations for the mean wind, turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) components, tangential stress and simplified equations for the third-order transport terms that appear in the second-order equations. The model in general successfully simulated wind speed profiles within and above maize, been, soybeen, wheat, orange and spruce canopies. These errors are believed to be caused by incorrect parameterizations for either the dissipation rate of TKE and/or the pressure-velocity correlations in the budget equations for the second moments.
