Superconducting conductors on round core (CORC®) cables and wires can meet the needs of large high-field magnets, such as particle accelerators and compact nuclear fusion machines, due to their simple cabling process, high current-carrying capacity and reliable operation under high mechanical stresses. Many high-field magnets require CORC® cables to carry a current of thousands of amperes in a background magnetic field exceeding 20 T. As a result, the large electromagnetic forces will deform the cable in the axial direction due to hoop stress and in the transverse direction by compressive stress. Therefore, it is essential to determine the irreversible deformation limit of the CORC® cable under axial tensile load and optimize the cabling parameters to potentially extend this limit. Analytical and numerical methods are developed to assess the performance degradation of CORC® wires under axial tensile load. The strain level, interlayer contact pressure and friction and their impact on the critical current are calculated by combining the mechanical response and the T-A method. Analyzing the results shows that the winding angle of the tape and the Poisson’s ratio of the inner core are key factors affecting the irreversible tensile strain limit of CORC® wires. The smaller the winding angle and the higher the Poisson’s ratio of the inner core, the higher the irreversible tensile strain limit. For multi-layer CORC® wires, the initial contact pressure caused by the cabling process must also be considered. The inter-layer interaction is coupled with the tape strain of each layer. The results of this research can serve as a basis for optimizing and designing CORC® wires with extended irreversible strain limits.

Conductor on Round Core (CORC®) cables and wires are composed of spiraled high-temperature superconducting (HTS) rare-earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) tapes, wound in multiple layers, and can carry very high currents in background magnetic fields of more than 20 T. They combine isotropic flexibility and high resilience to electromagnetic and thermal loads. The brittle nature of HTS tapes limits the maximum allowable axial tensile strain in superconducting cables. An intrinsic tensile strain above about 0.45% will introduce cracks in the REBCO layer of straight HTS tapes resulting in irreversible damage. The helical fashion at which the REBCO tapes are wound around the central core allows tapes to experience only a fraction of the total axial tensile strain applied to the CORC® wire. As a result, the critical strain limit of CORC® wires can be increased by a factor of more than 10 that of REBCO tapes. Finite element (FE) and analytical models are developed to predict the performance of CORC® wires under axial tensile strain. A parametric analysis is carried out by varying the winding angle, the Poisson’s ratio of the CORC® wire core, the core diameter, and the tape width. The results show that a small variation in winding angle can have a significant impact on the cable’s axial tensile strain tolerance. While the radial contraction of the helically wound tapes in a CORC® wire under axial tensile strain depends on its winding angle, it is mostly driven by the Poisson’s ratio of the central core, affecting the tape strain state and thus its performance. Contact pressure from multiple layers within the CORC® wire also affects the CORC® wire performance. The FE model can be used to optimize the cable design for specific application conditions, resulting in an irreversible strain limit of CORC® cables and wires as high as 7%.

Cuprate high-temperature superconductors (HTS), such as RE-Ba2Cu3O7-δ(REBCO, RE=rare earth), (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10-x(Bi-2223) and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8-x(Bi-2212), have enabled the development of high-field superconducting magnets capable of generating magnetic fields far exceeding 20 T. The brittle nature of HTS requires elaborate means to protect them against the high stresses and strains associated with high-field magnet operation, and so far has prevented reliable high-field HTS magnets from becoming a reality. Here we report a more than tenfold increase in the irreversible strain limit under axial tension (eirr) to over 7 % in composite conductors, such as in high-current Conductor on Round Core (CORC®) conductors, containing REBCO tapes wound in a helical fashion around a round metal core. Minimizing the tape winding pitch mechanically decouples the brittle REBCO film from the overall conductor. The REBCO tapes behave as springs, limiting the rate at which applied strain is transferred to the ceramic film. In addition, high-strength alloy cores allow the critical stress (σcrit) under axial tension at which initial degradation of CORC® conductors occurs to exceed 600 MPa, making them one of the strongest superconductors available. Mechanically decoupling the ceramic REBCO films from the overall CORC® conductor allows effective protection against the high operating stresses in high-field magnets. This breakthrough presents a monumental shift for HTS magnet technology, bringing reliable high-field superconducting magnets for compact fusion machines, the next generation of particle accelerators, and 40 – 60 T research solenoids within reach. Sedlak, K. et al., The European DEMO, i.e. the demonstration fusion power plant designed in the framework of the Roadmap to Fusion Electricity by the EUROfusion Consortium, is approaching the end of the pre-conceptual design phase, to be accomplished with a Gate Review in 2020, in which all DEMO subsystems will be reviewed by panels of independent experts. The latest 2018 DEMO baseline has major and minor radius of 9.1 m and 2.9 m, plasma current 17.9 MA, toroidal field on the plasma axis 5.2 T, and the peak field in the toroidal-field (TF) conductor 12.0 T. The 900 ton heavy TF coil is prepared in four low-temperature-superconductor (LTS) variants, some of them differing slightly, other significantly, from the ITER TF coil design. Two variants of the CS coils are investigated—a purely LTS one resembling the ITER CS, and a hybrid coil, in which the innermost layers made of HTS allow the designers either to increase the magnetic flux, and thus the duration of the fusion pulse, or to reduce the outer radius of the CS coil. An issue presently investigated by mechanical analyzes is the fatigue load. Two variants of the poloidal field coils are being investigated. The magnet and conductor design studies are accompanied by the experimental tests on both LTS and HTS prototype samples, covering a broad range of DC and AC tests. Many high-temperature superconductor (HTS) applications require superconducting cables with high currents while operating in an alternating magnetic field. HTS cables should be composed of numerous superconducting tapes to achieve the required current capacity. Alternating current and magnetic fields cause AC losses in such cables and can provoke conductor instability. AC losses and contact resistances were measured of several cable designs based on commercially available REBCO tapes at the University of Twente. The AC loss was measured under identical conditions for eight REBCO conductors manufactured according to three types of cabling methods—CORC® (Conductor on Round Core), Roebel, and stacked tape, including a full-size REBCO CICC (cable in conduit conductor). The measurements were done at T = 4.2 K without transport current in a sinusoidal AC magnetic field of 0.4 T amplitude and frequencies from 5 to 55 mHz. The AC loss was measured simultaneously by calibrated gas flow calorimeter utilizing the helium boil-off method and by the magnetization method using pick-up coils. Also, the AC loss of two CORC® conductors and a Roebel cable was measured at 77 K. Each conductor was measured with and without background field of 1 T. The measured AC coupling loss in the CORC® and Roebel conductors is negligible at 4.2 K for the applied conditions while at 77 K coupling loss was observed for all conductors. The absence of coupling loss at 4.2 K can be explained by shielding of the conductor interior; this is confirmed with measurement and calculation of the penetration field of CORC® and Roebel cables. The inter-tape contact resistance was measured for CORC® and stacked tape samples at 4.2 and 77 K. It was demonstrated that a short heat treatment of CORC® conductor with solder-coated tapes activates tape-to-tape soldering and decreases the contact resistance. The reduction of contact resistance by two orders in magnitude to tens of nΩm is comparable with the interstrand contact resistance in ITER Nb3Sn type conductors.

Within the framework for establishing standards of test methods for superconducting technical wires, various standards have been issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) (standard documents IEC 61788-1 to -20). Following the successful round robin test (RRT) for tensile testing REBCO wires at room temperature (Osamura K et al 2014 Supercond. Sci. Technol. 27 085009), this effort is extended to tensile test HTS wires at cryogenic temperatures and is coordinated by the CryoMaK lab at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Five different commercially available REBCO wires from five different manufacturers and one BiSCCO wire from another supplier were provided by the Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards (http://vamas.org) for testing. Samples were distributed between eight participating labs from five different countries for testing according to the specified guidelines. After the test results were delivered by all participants, the data were evaluated with statistical tools to investigate the main source of scatter and its magnitude in the test results. The final goal of the RRT is issuing an ISO/IEC standard for a cryogenic temperature tensile test for REBCO wires. In this report the results of the RRT for tensile testing REBCO wires at cryogenic temperatures are presented and discussed.

A conductor on round core (CORC (R)) cable is composed of several layers of helically wound high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes on a round core with the winding direction reversed in each successive layer. The cable is flexible but the flexibility is limited by the critical strain value causing breakage of the HTS layer when this strain level is exceeded. The cables for magnets in fusion reactors experience large mechanical and electromagnetic loads. These loads arise from the cabling, coil manufacturing, cooling, and magnet operation. In order to optimize the manufacture and operating conditions, the mechanical behavior of CORC (R) cables must be understood for the different relevant loading conditions. The cable configuration with many contact interactions between tapes and the non-linear behavior of the materials during the production and operating conditions makes the modeling challenging. Detailed finite element (FE) modeling is required to account for these complexities. The FE modeling allows an accurate calculation of the stress-strain state (SSS) of the cable components under various loads and avoids time-consuming large-scale experimental optimization studies. This work presents a detailed FE modeling of the 3D SSS in a CORC (R) wire under bending load. The elastic-plastic properties of the individual tape composite materials and its temperature dependence are taken into account. The FE model is experimentally validated by a multilayer CORC (R) bending test performed by Advanced Conductor Technologies LLC. A critical intrinsic tensile strain value of 0.45% is taken as the threshold where the individual tape performance becomes irreversibly degraded. The proposed FE model describes the bending test of the CORC (R) wire adequately and thus can be used to study other types of loads. A parametric study is ongoing with dependent variables to pursue a further optimization of CORC (R) cables and wires for various applications.

The China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR) is a new tokamak device whose magnet system includes toroidal field, central solenoid (CS) and poloidal field coils. The main goal is to build a fusion engineering tokamak reactor with about 1 GW fusion power and self-sufficiency by blanket. In order to reach this high performance, the magnet field target is 15 T. However, the huge electromagnetic load caused by high field and current is a threat for conductor degradation under cycling. The conductor with a short-twist-pitch (STP) design has large stiffness, which enables a significant performance improvement in view of load and thermal cycling. But the conductor with STP design has a remarkable disadvantage: it can easily cause severe strand indentation during cabling. The indentation can reduce the strand performance, especially under high load cycling. In order to overcome this disadvantage, a new design is proposed. The main characteristic of this new design is an updated layout in the triplet. The triplet is made of two Nb3Sn strands and one soft copper strand. The twist pitch of the two Nb3Sn strands is large and cabled first. The copper strand is then wound around the two superconducting strands (CWS) with a shorter twist pitch. The following cable stages layout and twist pitches are similar to the ITER CS conductor with STP design. One short conductor sample with a similar scale to the ITER CS was manufactured and tested with the Twente Cable Press to investigate the mechanical properties, AC loss and internal inspection by destructive examination. The results are compared to the STP conductor (ITER CS and CFETR CSMC) tests. The results show that the new conductor design has similar stiffness, but much lower strand indentation than the STP design. The new design shows potential for application in future fusion reactors.
