The effectiveness of amine-borane as reducing agent for the synthesis of iron nanoparticles has been investigated. Large (2-4 nm) Fe nanoparticles were obtained from [Fe{N(SiMe3)2}2]. Inclusion of boron in the nanoparticles is clearly evidenced by extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and Mössbauer spectrometry. Furthermore, the reactivity of amine-borane and amino-borane complexes in the presence of pure Fe nanoparticles has been investigated. Dihydrogen evolution was observed in both cases, which suggests the potential of Fe nanoparticles to promote the release of dihydrogen from amine-borane and amino-borane moieties., (Copyright © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Maghemite (gamma-Fe(2)O(3)) nanoparticles stabilized by long-alkyl-chain amines are synthesized by using an organometallic approach. This method consists of the hydrolysis and oxidation of an organometallic precursor, Fe[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2), in the presence of amine ligands as stabilizing agent in an organic solvent, namely tetrahydrofuran or toluene. Whatever the experimental conditions, particles with a diameter of 2.8 nm are obtained. The use of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and wide-angle X-ray scattering, together with Mössbauer spectroscopy and SQuId magnetometry, allows a complete characterization of these particles. Herein, we show that their structure is composed of a well-ordered core surrounded by a more disordered shell. The size of the latter varies from 0.65 to 0.50 nm depending on the experimental conditions and is of prime importance for the understanding of the magnetic properties. We demonstrate that the shorter the alkyl chain length of the amine 1) the better the crystallinity of the particle's core and 2) the stronger the interparticle interactions.

Cobalt nanoparticles (CoNPs) exhibit quite unique magnetic, catalytic, and optical properties. In this work, imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) are successfully used to elaborate magnetically responsive suspensions of quite monodisperse CoNPs with diameters below 5 nm. The as-synthesized CoNPs adopt the noncompact and metastable structure of ϵ-Co that progressively evolves at room temperature toward the stable hexagonal close-packed allotrope of Co. Accordingly, magnetization curves are consistent with zero-valent Co. As expected in this size range, the CoNPs are superparamagnetic at room temperature. Their blocking temperature is found to depend on the size of the IL cation. The CoNPs produced in an IL with a large cation exhibit a very high anisotropy, attributed to an enhanced dipolar coupling of the NPs, even though a larger interparticle distance is observed in this IL. Finally, the presence of surface hydrides on the CoNPs is assessed and paves the way toward the synthesis for Co-based bimetallic NPs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The choice of suitable organometallic precursors, [Re2(C3H5)4] and [Ru(Me-Allyl)2COD] or [Ru(COD)(COT)], allows us to synthesize polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) stabilized bimetallic RuRe nanoparticles of ca. 1.3 nm with narrow size dispersity, displaying the hcp crystal structure and to control their chemical order: an alloy or Re rich surface. The structural features of these NPs were determined using complementary characterization techniques (TEM, HRTEM, STEM-HAADF, EDX, WAXS, FT-IR, MAS-NMR and ICP). In particular, surface state investigation based on CO adsorption and oxidation reactions provided useful information of the chemical order in these nanoparticles. The RuRe NPs were obtained as stable colloidal solutions or powders. Surface reactivity studies demonstrated that the alloy type RuRe/PVP NPs show better resistance to oxidation than the ones displaying a Re enriched surface and are more active towards CO dissociation than monometallic Re/PVP NPs as a result of the synergic effect between Ru and Re. Interestingly, the dissociation of CO was not observed with RuRe/PVP NPs displaying a Re enriched surface. Besides the synthetic aspect, this work highlights the crucial influence of the chemical order resulting from the choice of the metal sources in the control of the reactivity of ultra-small metal nanoparticles. Enhancement of the thermoelectric properties of bismuth due to size reduction has prompted a large body of studies and recent interest in the nanochemistry of this material. The size control at the nanometer scale is complicated because of bismuth's low melting point and little known surface chemistry. We report herein an efficient synthetic method producing bismuth nanoparticles (Bi NPs) of sizes below 10 nm, and of rhombohedral structure based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) analysis. The nature and dynamics of the ligands at their surface have been investigated by infrared spectroscopy (IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. We demonstrate that alkynyl ligands, seldom used in nanochemistry, efficiently coordinate at the surface and afford stable Bi NPs that can be easily purified, leading to powders with high bismuth payload which can be redispersed into stable colloidal solutions. Core-shell RuPt (Ru core-Pt shell) and PtRu (Pt core-Ru shell) nanoparticles were prepared by decomposing in a two-step procedure a ruthenium ([Ru(COD)(COT)] (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene, COT = 1,3,5-cyclooctatriene)) and a platinum complex ([Pt2(dba)3] (dba = dibenzylideneacetone) or [Pt(CH3)2(COD)]) in the presence of 4-(3-phenylpropyl)pyridine (PPP) as a stabilizer and using different Ru/Pt ratios. The data obtained from a combination of several analyses (TEM, HRTEM, WAXS and IR) indicate that the soobtained nanoparticles present a core-shell structure. The catalytic performances of these bimetallic nanoparticles for the selective hydrogenation of trans-cinnamaldehyde were investigated, which provided interesting results as well as useful information to elucidate their structure and composition. Indeed, the catalytic results evidence that: (1) the combination of both metals led in some cases to a synergistic effect on the selectivity of the reaction, and (2) the structure and the composition affected the selectivity of the reaction. Abstract: Nanoparticles (NPs), average size of 2–5 nm, of ruthenium, cobalt, and rhodium have been prepared by an original method, namely the solid-state decomposition under dihydrogen of an organometallic precursor either dispersed in polymer films or directly as nanocrystals. The NPs dispersion, size, and morphology are investigated by transmission electron microscopy, and their structure by wide angle X-ray scattering. Infrared spectroscopy, after adsorption of carbon monoxide on the metal NPs surfaces, evidences a nonoxidized surface of high reactivity. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
