This shell midden consists of approximately 8 acres. Four stps placed within this area recorded depths between 20 and 30cmbs. A rhyolite flake was found in one of the stps within the midden area. A small quantity of oyster shell was recovered in three stps along the cliff. Prehistoric material distribution (including one non-diagnostic ceramic sherd) was thinly scattered throughout most sections of the test area, which extended some 400m further southwest from the oyster shell concentration. A scatter of 18th century artifacts was found in the southwestern part of the test area, located between 100 and 350m southwest of the prehistoric shell midden. This area was not given a separate site designation, and the artifacts were thought to have been associated with the nearby Blossom Point Farmhouse or Ballast House site at 18CH216. These artifacts included tin-glazed earthenware, pearlware, creamware, a pipe bowl fragment, a clear bottle glass fragment, nails, and brick fragments.

This report presents the results of Phase II archaeological testing of 11 sites on the Poinsett Electronic Combat Range, Sumter County, South Carolina (38SU56, 38SU60, 38SU106, 38SU153, 38SU157, 38SU163, 38SU167, 38SU169, 38SU204, 38SU205, 38SU230). Of these 11 sites, seven are prehistoric and four are historic. The sites are located in the Coastal Plain of South Carolina. All of the sites are located on land owned by the U.S. Air Force (USAF) and the testing was conducted in order to assess each site’s eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

The Phase II excavations at the Blossom Point Farmhouse focused on sub-floor deposits in the three main rooms of the house. The excavations clearly showed that the artifacts and ecofacts recovered from the excavations were derived from a badly disturbed context. Diagnostic artifacts from the Blossom Point Farmhouse indicate that the archaeological deposits date to the middle to late 19th century with a mix of 20th century artifacts added later. During this time period, the house was occupied by the overseers of the Blossom Point Farm. Archival data indicate that the Blossom Point Farm was the most valuable of the Jesuit farms on Cedar Neck; however, it was not necessarily the most efficiently run. Although the middle portion of the 19th century prior to the Civil War was comparatively prosperous for the Blossom Point farm, the socio-economic status of the overseers was not all that high, according to archival data. Phase II archaeological excavations at the Blossom Point Farmhouse collected interesting information on the lifeways of the 19th century overseers who occupied the house. However, the excavations also showed that the contextual integrity of the sub-floor archaeological deposits had been badly disturbed by animal inhabitants of the space beneath the floor and by recent repairs of the flooring. Given the extensive disturbance of the deposits, the archaeological component of the Blossom Point Farmhouse is not considered to be eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. No further archaeological investigations are recommended for the site.

National Park Service archaeological excavations at Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site from 1968 through 1972. Although a preliminary report describing the extent and nature of the excavations was produced shortly after the close of each season's fieldwork, until recently the extensive collection of artifacts and other materials recovered during that work has remained largely unanalyzed and unreported for want of sufficient funding. A systematic effort to analyze and report all classes of material in the Fort Union collection was initiated in 1978 under the direction of Dick Ping Hsu with assistance from Leslie A. Perry. When Hsu transferred from the Midwest Archeological Center in 1981 and Perry left the National Park Service in 1982, this work was continued by William J. Hunt, Jr. These efforts have resulted in a series of manuscript reports, each focusing on a particular aspect of the 1968-1972 work at Fort Union. The series, entitled "Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site (32WI17) Material Culture Reports," consists of a volume (Part I) by Hunt which critically assesses the fieldwork accomplished during the four seasons of work at the site; four volumes, with sections authored by Hunt or Perry or both, which describe the food-related artifacts (Part II); personal and recreational materials (Part III); the firearms, trapping and fishing equipment (Part IV); and the buttons (Part V) recovered from the site. Another volume (Part VI), by Carole A. Angus and Carl R. Falk, summarizes information about the vertebrate faunal remains from the Fort Union excavations. As more classes of material in this large and important collection are analyzed, more descriptive reports will be completed in this series. This report is Part II of the series.
