Background: Thyroid hormones are known to affect energy metabolism. Many patients of metabolic syndrome have subclinical or clinical hypothyroidism and vice versa. To study the correlation of thyroid profile and serum lipid profile with metabolic syndrome., Method: It is a hospital based cross sectional case-control study carried out in tertiary care health center, we studied thyroid functions test and serum lipid profile in 100 metabolic syndrome patients according to IDF criteria and a similar number of age, gender and ethnicity matched healthy controls., Result: We found that serum HDL was significantly lower (p < 0.001) in cases (41.28 ± 8.81) as compared to controls (54.00 ± 6.31). It was also found that serum LDL, VLDL, triglyceride levels and total cholesterol were found to be significantly higher (p < 0.001) in cases than controls. Serum TSH levels of subjects in cases group (3.33 ± 0.78) were significantly higher (p < 0.001) than that of controls (2.30 ± 0.91) and significantly lower levels of T 4 (p < 0.001) in the patients of metabolic syndrome (117.45) than in controls (134.64) while higher levels of T 3 , although statistically insignificant in the patients of metabolic syndrome., Conclusion: Thyroid hormones up-regulate metabolic pathways relevant to resting energy expenditure, hence, obesity and thyroid functions are often correlated., (Copyright © 2017 Chang Gung University. Objective: The objective was to determine the role of various components of metabolic syndrome (MetS) as independent risk factor for erectile dysfunction (ED). Materials and Methods: A total of 113 subjects of MetS, as recommended by recent IDF and AHA/NHLBI joint interim statement were selected for study who presented for ED. After doing Anthropometric examination, fasting laboratory assay for fasting plasma glucose (FPG), fasting insulin, hemoglobin A1c, triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and 2 h oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was done. Erectile function was assessed by completing questions one through five of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5). A multiple linear regression analysis was carried out on 66 subjects with IIEF-5 score as dependent variable and components of MetS FPG, 2 h OGTT, TG, HDL, and waist circumference as independent variables. Results: Using a multiple linear regression analysis, we observed that presence of the various components of MetS was associated with ED and a decrease IIEF-5 score and this effect was greater than the effect associated with any of the individual components. Of the individual components of the MetS, HDL (B = 0.136; P = 0.004) and FPG (B = −0.069; P = 0.007) conferred the strongest effect on IIEF-5 score. However, overall age had most significant effect on IIEF-5 score. Conclusion: It is crucial to formulate strategies and implement them to prevent or control the epidemic of the MetS and its consequences. The early identification and treatment of risk factors might be helpful to prevent ED and secondary cardiovascular disease, including diet and lifestyle interventions.

Abdominal obesity is one of the pivotal factors in defining the metabolic syndrome. Abdominal obesity is assessed by the various clinical surrogates among which waist circumference is considered to be simple, inexpensive & sensitive tool. Insulin resistance is one pretty troublesome entity which very commonly aggravates metabolic syndrome. Many methods and indices are available for the estimation of insulin resistance. It is essential to test and validate their reliability before they can be used as an investigation in patients. At present, hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp and intravenous glucose tolerance test are the most reliable methods available for estimating insulin resistance and are being used as a reference standard. Some simple methods, from which indices can be derived, have been validated e.g. homeostasis model assessment (HOMA), quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI). For the clinical uses HOMA-insulin resistance, QUIKI, and Matsuda are suitable, while HES, McAuley, Belfiore, Cederholm, Avignon and Stumvoll index are suitable for epidemiological/research purposes. With increasing number of these available indices of IR, it may be difficult for clinicians to select the most appropriate index for their studies. Total 33 obese patients were studied to determine correlation in between liver fat content with dyslipidemia and insulin resistance. Liver and spleen attenuation measurements were taken with three regions of interests (ROIs) from the liver and two ROIs from the spleen. Hepatic attenuation indices were measured as follows: (1) Hepatic parenchymal attenuation (CTLP); (2) liver to spleen attenuation ratio (LSratio); and (3) difference between hepatic and splenic attenuation (LSdif). Bivariate correlation analysis showed moderate but statistically significant negative correlation between CTLP, LSratio, and LSdif with body mass index, triglyceride, fasting plasma sugar, fasting plasma insulin, homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA IR), 2 h oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), and statistically significant positive correlation with high density lipoprotein. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is closely associated with features of the metabolic syndrome. The amount of intrahepatic fat closely correlates with the number of metabolic syndrome features. The values of CTLP, LSratio, and LSdif demonstrate strong inverse correlations with degree of steatosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
