Abstract

The TPC/Two-Gamma Collaboration has measured the inclusive cross section for production of charmed D∗± mesons in photon-photon collisions. The reaction utilized was e+e-→e+e-D∗±X, with D∗±→DOπ+-, DO→K-+π ±, and either zero or one outgoing e± detected. The result, σ(e + e - → e + e - D ∗± X) = 74±26±19 pb , is in agreement with the quark parton mo del prediction for e+e- → e+e-c c , combined with a Lund model for the hadronization of the charmed quarks.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the reaction ..gamma gamma -->..K/sup +/K/sup -/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/ in both tagged and untagged events at PEP. The cross section rises with invariant ..gamma gamma.. mass to about 15 nb at 2 GeV and falls slowly at higher masses. We find clear evidence for the processes ..gamma gamma -->..phi..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/ and ..gamma gamma -->..K/sup asterisk0/(892)K..pi... Upper limits (95% C.L.) of 1.5 and 5.7 nb in the mass range from 1.7 to 3.7 GeV are obtained for phirho/sup 0/ and K/sup asterisk0/K/sup asterisk0/ production, respectively.

Abstract

The inclusive production cross sections and transverse momentum distributions of ${K}^{*0}$ and ${{K}_{S}}^{0}$ mesons in ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ annihilation at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV have been measured by means of the time projection chamber detector in the PEP-4 experiment. The mean multiplicites are found to be 0.49 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 0.04(stat.) \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 0.07(syst.) (${K}^{*0}+{\stackrel{-}{K}}^{*0}$) and 1.22 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 0.03(stat.) \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.15(syst.) (${K}^{0}+{\stackrel{-}{K}}^{0}$) per event.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}p\overline{p}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ process with the TPC/Two-Gamma facility at the PEP ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ storage ring at SLAC. Forty-five $p\overline{p}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ events were identified in data corresponding to an integrated ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ luminosity of 142 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. The cross section for $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p\overline{p}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ is given both as a function of the $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ center-of-mass energy ${W}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}}$, with ${W}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ between 2.5 and 5.5 GeV, and as a function of the in variant mass squared ${q}^{2}$ of one of the photons, with $\ensuremath{-}{q}^{2}l7$ Ge${\mathrm{V}}^{2}$. This cross section falls much less rapidly with ${W}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ than does the cross section for a similar process, $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p\overline{p}$. No ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}^{0}{\overline{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}^{0}$ production is observed, and only a small fraction of the events at low ${W}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ is consistent with $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\Delta}}^{++}{\overline{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{-}}$, ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}^{++}\overline{p}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, or ${\overline{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{-}}p{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$. In an expanded search through the same data, four events compatible with either $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\overline{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}(\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ or ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{0}\overline{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}({\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\gamma})$ production were found.

Abstract

Proton production in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at 29 GeV has been studied with the time projection chamber. Measurements of the dependence of proton fractions on momentum, transverse momentum with respect to the jet axis, hadron multiplicity, and event sphericity are reported. Our results are consistent with the assumption that primary baryons and mesons have similar production spectra, and indicate that protons provide more direct probes of underlying fragmentation phenomena than do pions.

Abstract

Using the data accumulated at LEP in 1989 and 1990 with the ALEPH detector, the inclusive and exclusive branching ratios of the τ lepton have been measured assuming lepton universality inZ0 decays. The inclusive branching fractions for the τ decay into one, three, and five charged particles have been determined to be (85.45±0.97)%, (14.35±0.48)%, and (0.10±0.05)%, respectively, in agreement with the world averages. New undetected decay modes are determined to have a branching fraction of less than 2.1% at 95% CL. The measured branching ratios for quasi-exclusive channels are slightly larger than, but consistent with the world averages, except for the modes τ→3 hadrons+v τ andτ→hadron+2π0v τ , which are significantly larger. These latter branching ratios have been found to be (9.5±0.7)% and (10.2±1.1)%, respectively. The sum of all the measured quasi-exclusive branching ratios is (100.4±1.8)%. A fully exclusive analysis of modes with neutral pions shows no evidence for new photonic decay modes with a branching fraction limit of 3.4% at 95% CL.

Abstract

We use the time-projection chamber detector to study mechanisms of baryon production in the central rapidity region of jets from e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation. On the basis of angular correlations between protons and antiprotons, we exclude the isotropic decay of heavy mesonic clusters as a dominant source of baryons at 95% confidence level. The diquark mechanisms used in string fragmentation models reproduce the data, provided that diquarks are formed in a two-step process which allows mesons to be produced in between the baryon and antibaryon.

Abstract

An experiment to measure the electromagnetic form factor of the negative $\ensuremath{\pi}$ meson has been carried out at Fermilab by elastically scattering 100-GeV/c pions from the atomic electrons in a liquid-hydrogen target. We find that the elastic differential scattering cross section is characterized by a root-mean-square pion charge radius of 0.56\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04 fm. This paper described our experimental design, measurement resolutions, event triggering logic, event reconstruction, experimental corrections, and form-factor results.

Abstract

Inclusive production cross sections for photons and π0's ine + e − annihilation at a center of mass energy of 29 GeV have been measured. The π0 production spectrum agrees with a corresponding measurement for π±. The ratio of the π0 inclusive rate to the average for π± is 0.92±0.14. The fractions of the total energy carried by photons and π0's are 0.244±0.016 and 0.217±0.033, respectively. The fraction of total energy carried by all stable hadrons, prompt leptons and photons is determined to be 0.938±0.045, leaving 0.062±0.045 for neutrinos.

Abstract

Two-photon production of ${K}_{S}^{0}{K}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{\mp}}$ states has been studied by the TPC/Two-Gamma experiment at the SLAC storage ring PEP. A resonance of mass 1.42 GeV was seen when one of the photons was quite virtual but not when both photons were nearly real. Production of a spin-1 meson, which cannot be made by two real photons, would fit these observations. The ${Q}^{2}$ dependence of the data in the resonance region agrees with this spin assignment and is incompatible with a spin-0 hypothesis. The mass and width of the resonance are similar to those of the $E$ meson, which has been assigned ${J}^{P}={0}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${J}^{P}={1}^{+}$ by different experiments.

Abstract

The charge asymmetry in the decay η′(958)→π+π−γ has been measured using η′ mesons produced in the reaction π−p→η′n at 2.1 GeV/c incident pion momentum. A value for the asymmetry of (−6.9±7.8%) was obtained, based on 295±31 events after background subtraction. This result is consistent with C invariance in this decay.

Abstract

By observing the reaction ..gamma gamma -->..K-italic/sub s-italic//sup 0/K/sup +-/..pi../sup minus-or-plus/, the TPC/Two-Gamma experiment at the SLAC e-italic/sup +/e/sup -/ storage ring PEP has obtained a 95%-confidence-level limit of GAMMA/sub iota//sub ..-->..//sub ..gamma..//sub ..gamma../B(iota..-->..KK-bar..pi..) ..//sub ..gamma..//sub ..gamma../ limit appears to conflict with previous assignments of an observed rho..gamma.. decay to iota and also with many analyses of eta-eta'-iota mixing. The contrast of this small ..gamma gamma.. width with the large rate for J-italic/psi..--> gamma..iota is evidence that the iota is a glueball with little admixture of q-italicq-bar states.

Abstract

We have measured the electromagnetic form factor of the charged pion by direct scattering of 100-GeV/c ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ from stationary electrons in a liquid-hydrogen target at Fermilab. The deviations from the pointlike pion-scattering cross section may be characterized by a root-mean-square charge radius for the pion of ${〈{{\mathcal{r}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{2}〉}^{\frac{1}{2}}=0.56\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04$ F.

Abstract

Data from the Time Projection Chamber at the SLAC storage ring PEP have been used to study the inclusive production of charged hadrons. Particles were identified by simultaneous dE/dx and momentum measurements. Cross sections and particle fractions for pi +/-, k+/-, and p(anti-p) are given as a function of several variables. Predictions of various hadronization models are compared to the data. A comparison is made with other fragmentation processes.

Abstract

Bose-Einstein correlations between like-sign pions have been investigated in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at ..sqrt..s = 29 GeV using the Time Projection Chamber detector at the SLAC e/sup +/e/sup -/ storage ring PEP. The production rate of like-sign pion pairs with small relative momentum is found to be increased by more than 50% over the rate expected for uncorrelated production of pions. From the correlation length, a typical source radius of 0.65 fm is derived. Data are consistent with a spherical shape of the pion source. No dependence of radius or correlation strength on the event multiplicity is observed.

Abstract

Evidence for a narrow state decaying into an F meson and a photon has been obtained in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation events at 29 GeV c.m. energy. This state lies 139.5 +- 8.3(stat) +- 9.7(syst) MeV above the F-meson mass and is consistent with the expected F( meson. The F mesons are identified by a peak in the K/sup +/K/sup -/..pi../sup + -/ mass at 1.948 +- 0.028 +- 0.010 GeV.

Abstract

Final states produced by charged baryon exchange in π−p interactions at 12 GeV/c laboratory momentum have been studied. Forward neutrons with momenta determined by a calorimeter to be greater than 8.5 ± 1.4 GeV/c triggered the SLAC 40-inch hydrogen bubble chamber which operated at a 10 Hz expansion rate. We report data on the reactions π−p→nπ−π+, π−p→nπ−π+π0, and π−p→nπ−π−π+π+. In π−nπ−p→nπ+, production of ϱ and f mesons is observed. Differential cross sections are derived and compared with data at lower incident momentum and with theoretical models. In π−p→nπ−π+π0, ω production is observed with a differential cross section having a deep near u′= 0.2 (GeV/c)2. In π−p→nπ−π−π+π+, Δ−, ϱ and f production is observed . The observed mass distributions appear to indicate the production of wide resonaces decaying into ϱππ. Some evidence for ϱ-ω interference is also observed.

The reactions K/sup -/ + p ons in pyrolyti e processes con + K/sup +/ + K/sup -/ and K/sup -/ + p ons in pyrolyti e processes con + Please delete abstract 26362 Elastic differential cross sections for p-p and ceramic materia / sup -/-p scattering in the incident momentum ranges 7 to 20 and 7 to 17 Bev/c, respectively, were measured. Analysis of the data in terms of vacuum pole dominance showed the p-p cross section to have the shrinkage predicted by Regge pole theory while the ceramic materia /sup -/-p cross section showed no shrinkage. Abstract

A one-pion-exchange pole-extrapolation analysis of K + p→K πΔ ++ at 7.3 GeV/ c provides evidence for the existence of a broad scalar T = 1 2 K π resonance near 1.1GeV. The angular distribution in the Kπ center-of-mass is consistent with this result.

26. Optical Model Analysis of Elastic Scattering of 125-MevK+Mesons in Nuclear Emulsions

Abstract

The diffuse-surface optical model has been used to analyze the elastic scattering and interaction cross-section data obtained from 94 meters of positive $K$-meson track in nuclear emulsion between energies of 100 and 150 Mev. The analysis was carried out on the SWAC digital computer through the use of the existing proton code which required but slight modification, such as the use of the Klein-Gordon equation. A thorough investigation was made of the number of energy intervals and representative emulsion nuclei that were required for adequate accuracy in the computed averaged cross sections. This number was found to be one energy and two representative emulsion nuclei (heavy and light). The four parameters (${R}_{0}$, the radius parameter; $a$, the edge thickness; $V$, the real part of the potential; and $W$, the imaginary part of the potential) were varied and the goodness of fit was tested by means of the ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{2}$ probability, there being nine degrees of freedom. An attractive real potential is fairly clearly ruled out and good fits were obtained for a repulsive real potential for a fairly wide range of physically acceptable geometrical parameters. If the ${R}_{0}$ and $a$ are chosen from electron-scattering experiments, then $V=21\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}4$ Mev and $W=\ensuremath{-}11.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.5$ Mev. If ${R}_{0}$ is increased to 1.20\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}13}$ cm, then $V=14\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2.5$ Mev and $W=\ensuremath{-}7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$ Mev.

Meson (K/sup -/) reactions in a hydrogen bubble chamber at 1.80 and 1.95 Bev/c were used to investigate properties of the hyperon ( XI /sup -/). The number of events observed at each momentum and the total cross sections are listed. The XI /sup -/ mean life was computed, and the decay asymmetry parameters are illustrated. Abstract

An experimental study of the elastic, inelastic, and charge exchange scattering of ${K}^{+}$ mesons in nuclear emulsion has been made based on 100 meters of track at an average beam energy of 125 Mev. The elastic scattering and total cross sections have been used in a diffuse surface optical model calculation and the inelastic distribution has been analyzed by Monte Carlo techniques. With the assumption of $S$-wave scattering for the $T=1$ ${K}^{+}$-nucleon state and $S$- and $P$-wave scattering for $T=0$, two best fit $T=0$ phase-shift solutions have been found for two different radius parameters. The dependence upon radius is small and the $P$-0wave phase shifts seem to be important at this energy.

Abstract

The XI pi resonance at 1.530 Bev, which was produced by meson (K/sup -/) reactions in a hydrogen bubble chamber at 1.801.95 Bev/c, was investigated. A complete angular correlation study of the decay sequence XI /sup *o/ yields XI /sup -/ + pi /sup +/, XI /su p -/ yields LAMBDA + pi /sup -/ is reported. lt is concluded that the simplest spin-parity assignment of the resonance is (3/2)/sup +/. Abstract

We measure an inclusive branching fraction of (13.9 +- 2.0/sub -2.2//sup +1.9/)% for the decay tau/sup -/..--> nu../sub tau/..pi../sup -/..pi../sup 0/+nh/sup 0/ (ngreater than or equal to1), where h/sup 0/ is a ..pi../sup 0/ or an eta. The data sample, obtained with the time-projection chamber detector facility at the SLAC e/sup +/e/sup -/ storage ring PEP, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 72 pb/sup -1/ at 29-GeV center-of-mass energy. The measured branching fraction is somewhat greater than the theoretical prediction and, with errors taken into account, could resolve the present difference between the inclusive and the sum of the exclusive tau/sup +- / branching fractions into one charged prong.

Abstract

In 50 meters of 200 to 300 Mev K/sup +/-meson track followed in nuclear emulsioii. one interaction event was found from which a pion track emerges. The incoming K/sup +/ meson had a kinetic energy of 323 plus or minus 20 Mev. The K/sup +/ meson re-emerged with an energy of 30 Mev at 36 degrees. Thc pion track has a characteristic pi - ending, and the pion was emitted with 34 Mev at 96 degrees. ln addition a 40-Mev proton left the star at 81 degrees and there are three other short tracks. Although the kinematics admit an analysis in which no inelastic secondary process occurred among the primary reaction products. strong inelastic secondary processes are quite possible and must be considered. Change independence holds important implications for the pion yield change ratios and the early trend of negative excess seems rather striking. (auth)

Abstract

The optical model potential for K/sup -/ mesons was calculated through an analysis of experimental results on elastic scattering at 95 to 125 Mev. The analysis was performed for R/sub 0/ equal to 1.70 and 1.20 fermis and for a values from 0.4 to 0.72 fermis, the Coulomb radius being fixed at 1.07 fermis. A best value of the real potential if a is more than 0.50 was determined to be attractive and approximately 25 Mev. (C.J.G.)

Abstract

A large emulsion stack exposed to the positive K beam at the Berkeley 6 GeV Bevatron has been used to measure the mass of the K-particles and their abundances. The masses for the decay modes Kμ2, Kπ2 and τ were obtained by measurement of the mean range of the secondaries. In addition, masses for all modes compared to the proton mass were measured by the range-momentum method. The abundances were determined by following and blob-counting secondaries.
