Background: Binge-watching has become increasingly popular in recent years. Although it can provide a form of entertainment and mood regulation, it has also been associated with adverse mental health issues. In this study, we explored the association between binge-watching behavior and mental health. Methods: Using a cross-sectional survey conducted from May to November 2018, we surveyed 535 participants over 18 years old from Ain Shams University by using a combination of online and pen-and-paper methods. Data on sociodemographic characteristics and TV series watching patterns were collected, and participants completed the Binge-Watching Engagement and Symptoms Questionnaire (BWESQ), the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18), and the Subjective Happiness Scale (SHS). Results: Among the 535 participants surveyed, 333 were retained and divided into three groups (i.e., non-binge-watchers, trouble-free binge-watchers, and problematic binge-watchers) in accordance with previous binge-watching research. Significant between-group differences were found in terms of relationship status, commonly used devices (mobile, laptop, TV), and perceived dependency on TV series watching. Problematic binge-watchers showed significantly higher scores for all BWESQ and BSI-18 subscales. Conclusion: Trouble-free binge-watchers and problematic binge-watchers were more likely to be single than non-binge-watchers and demonstrated a marked preference for using mobile phones and laptops over traditional television. Dimensional frameworks of psychopathology call for multivariate approaches to map co-occurring disorders to index what symptoms emerge when and for whom. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) offers a method for assessing and differentiating the dynamics of co-occurring symptoms with greater temporal granularity and naturalistic context. The present study used multivariate mixed effects location-scale modeling to characterize the time-varying dynamics of depressed mood and anxiety for women diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and major depression (MDD). Women completed five daily EMA surveys over 30 days (150 EMA surveys/woman, T ≈ 5250 total observations) and two clinical diagnostic and retrospective self-report measures administered approximately two months apart. There was evidence of same-symptom lagged effects (bs = 0.08–0.09), but not cross-symptom lagged effects (b s < 0.01) during EMA. Symptoms co-varied such that momentary spikes from one's typical level of anxiety were associated with increases in momentary depressed mood (b = 0.19) and greater variability of depressed mood (b = 0.06). Similarly, spikes from one's typical levels of depressed mood were associated with increases in momentary anxiety (b = 0.19). Furthermore, the presence and magnitude of effects demonstrated person-specific heterogeneity. Our findings are constrained to the dynamics of depressed and anxious mood among cisgender women with primary SAD and current or past MDD. The prevalence of depression is a major societal health concern, and there is an ongoing need to develop tools that predict who will become depressed. Past research suggests that depression changes the language we use, but it is unclear whether language is predictive of worsening symptoms. Here, we test whether the sentiment of brief written linguistic responses predicts changes in depression. Across two studies (N = 467), participants provided responses to neutral open-ended questions, narrating aspects of their lives relevant to depression (e.g., mood, motivation, sleep). Participants also completed the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) to assess depressive symptoms and a risky decision-making task with periodic measurements of momentary happiness to quantify mood dynamics. The sentiment of written responses was evaluated by human raters (N = 470), Large Language Models (LLMs; ChatGPT 3.5 and 4.0), and the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) tool. We found that language sentiment evaluated by human raters and LLMs, but not LIWC, predicted changes in depressive symptoms at a three-week follow-up. Using computational modeling, we found that language sentiment was associated with current mood, but language sentiment predicted symptom changes even after controlling for current mood. In summary, we demonstrate a scalable tool that combines brief written responses with sentiment analysis by AI tools that matches human performance in the prediction of future psychiatric symptoms. ObjectiveMethodResultConclusionLesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ+) youth experience known inequities in mental health outcomes, including depression and suicidality. The Promoting Wellbeing & Resilience (PWR) class is an interactive, developmentally tailored group that provides strength-based, practical skills to LGBTQ+ teenagers with depression. It is designed to be implemented by paraprofessionals to increase community-based access to care.Investigators developed and piloted an eight-session cognitive-behavioral class for LGBTQ+ youth (N = 21) ages 12 to 17 (M = 14.8 years, 81% Caucasian, 57% gender diverse, 100% non-heterosexual) with depression symptoms. The youth received training in mood regulation, communication skills, stress management, and goal setting in a small group format (5–8 youth per group). Outcomes were youth-reported depression (primary), anxiety, and trauma symptoms at pre-treatment and post-treatment. Paired sample (dependent) one-tailed t-tests were used to examine treatment effects. Focus groups were also conducted with participants to assess satisfaction and collect qualitative feedback regarding class content and format.The resilience class was associated with reductions in depression symptoms post-treatment (t(17) = 3.3, p = .002, d = 0.5) but not anxiety (t(17) = 1.8, p = .049, d = 0.3) or trauma symptoms (t(17) = 1.2, p = .118, d = 0.1). Completion rates for all group sessions were high (95%), and the majority (57%) of participants returned for an optional review session.Preliminary results suggest a manualized 8-week skills-based cognitive-behavioral group intervention designed to be delivered by paraprofessionals may be effective at reducing depression symptoms in actively depressed LGBTQ+ youth. Objectives: The Mental Health Inventory (MHI‐5) is frequently used as a screener for mood and anxiety disorders. However, few population‐based studies have validated it against a diagnostic instrument assessing disorders following current diagnostic criteria. Methods: Within the third Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study (NEMESIS‐3), a representative population‐based study of adults (N = 6194; age: 18–75 years), the MHI‐5 was used to measure general mental ill‐health in the past month. Presence of mood (major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder, or bipolar disorder) and anxiety disorders (panic disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia, or generalized anxiety disorder) in the past month was assessed with a slightly modified version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview 3.0 per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental disorders‐5. Results: The MHI‐5 was good to excellent at distinguishing people with and without a mood disorder, an anxiety disorder, and any mood or anxiety disorder. The cut‐off value associated with the highest sensitivity and highest specificity for mood disorder was ≤68, and ≤76 for an anxiety disorder or any mood or anxiety disorder. Major depressive disorder (MDD) comprises subtypes with distinct symptom profiles. For example, patients with melancholic and atypical MDD differ in the direction of appetite and body weight changes as well as mood reactivity. Despite reported links to altered energy metabolism, the role of circulating neuropeptides from the gut in modulating such symptoms remains largely elusive. We collected data from 103 participants, including 52 patients with MDD and 51 healthy control participants (HCP). After an overnight fast, we measured plasma levels of (acyl and des-acyl) ghrelin and participants reported their current metabolic and mood states using visual analog scales (VAS). Furthermore, they completed symptom-related questionnaires (i.e., STAI-T). Patients with atypical versus melancholic MDD reported less negative affect (p = 0.025). Higher levels of acyl ghrelin (corrected for BMI) were associated with improved mood (p = 0.012), specifically in patients with MDD. These associations of ghrelin were not mood-item specific and exceeded correlations with trait markers of negative affectivity. In contrast to associations with mood state, higher levels of ghrelin were not associated with increased hunger per se or changes in appetite in patients with MDD. The study is limited by the cross-sectional design without an intervention. Our results reveal potentially mood-enhancing effects of ghrelin in fasting individuals that exceed associations with metabolic state ratings. These associations with circulating neuropeptides might help explain anti-depressive effects of fasting interventions and could complement conventional treatments in patients with melancholic MDD. Individuals suffering from depression exhibit a higher rate of unintended pregnancies, which are associated with negative outcomes for both parents and children. Often, unintended pregnancies result from contraceptive mistakes. Here, we examine the relationship between depression and the consistency of contraceptive behavior, testing ambivalence as a possible mediator. The analyses were based on cross-sectional data from the second and third waves of the German Relationship and Family Panel Pairfam. A German-speaking sample without children (N = 190; 117 female, 73 male), who reported not attempting to conceive or become pregnant during the last 12 months, was analyzed in comparison with a propensity score matched sample. Ambivalence was operationalized as the difference between the ideal and realistic number of children in wave 2. Data from wave 3 were used to assess contraceptive behavior. Depressed mood in wave 2 and consistency of contraceptive behavior in wave 3 were negatively correlated. After including ambivalence in wave 2 as a mediator in the model, the direct path between depressed mood and consistency of contraceptive behavior remained significant, with no significant mediation found. For men only, we observed a significant negative association of ambivalence with the consistency of contraceptive behavior in the last 3 months. No significant relationship was found between depressed mood and ambivalence. Andropause is a health problem in men caused by a decrease in free testosterone levels. Depression is a mental disorder that happens with a person that is related to mood. This research aims to determine the relationship between Andropause and Depression in police officers in Polda Bali in 2023. This research is a descriptiveanalytical study with a cross-sectional study design. Andropause was assessed using the ADAM questionnaire, and depression was assessed using the PHQ-9 questionnaire. The sample was selected using a purposive sampling technique. There were 60 respondents in this study. A total of 31 people (51.7%) respondents were positive for Andropause, and 29 people (48.3%) were negative for Andropause. Meanwhile, 12 people (20.0%) of respondents experienced mild depression, and 48 people (80.0%) did not experience depression. Ten (10) respondents experienced Andropause with Depression. There is a significant relationship between Andropause and Depression (p=0.003). The odds ratio (OR 95% CI) obtained was 6.429 (1.270-32.541). Also there is a significant relationship between Stress and Depression with p<0,001 (0,000), with OR 21 (4,4-100,1). The majority of police officers in Polda Bali were found to experience Andropause and Depression, as many as 10 people (32.3%). As age increases, the incidence of Andropause increases, and in the respondent population, most of whom are in the mid-life crisis period, it increases the possibility of depression. The subtype diagnosis and severity classification of mood disorder have been made through the judgment of verified assistance tools and psychiatrists. Recently, however, many studies have been conducted using biomarker data collected from subjects to assist in diagnosis, and most studies use heart rate variability (HRV) data collected to understand the balance of the autonomic nervous system on statistical analysis methods to perform classification through statistical analysis. In this research, three mood disorder severity or subtype classification algorithms are presented through multimodal analysis of data on the collected heart-related data variables and hidden features from the variables of time and frequency domain of HRV. Comparing the classification performance of the statistical analysis widely used in existing major depressive disorder (MDD), anxiety disorder (AD), and bipolar disorder (BD) classification studies and the multimodality deep neural network analysis newly proposed in this study, it was confirmed that the severity or subtype classification accuracy performance of each disease improved by 0.118, 0.231, and 0.125 on average. Through the study, it was confirmed that deep learning analysis of biomarker data such as HRV can be applied as a primary identification and diagnosis aid for mental diseases, and that it can help to objectively diagnose psychiatrists in that it can confirm not only the diagnosed disease but also the current mood status. The importance of time is ever prevalent in our world, and disruptions to the normal light/dark and sleep/wake cycle have now become the norm rather than the exception for a large part of it. All mood disorders, including seasonal affective disorder (SAD), major depressive disorder (MDD), and bipolar disorder (BD), are strongly associated with abnormal sleep and circadian rhythms in a variety of physiological processes. Environmental disruptions to normal sleep/wake patterns, light/dark changes, and seasonal changes can precipitate episodes. Moreover, treatments that target the circadian system have proven to be therapeutic in certain cases. This review will summarize much of our current knowledge of how these disorders associate with specific circadian phenotypes, as well as the neuronal mechanisms that link the circadian clock with mood regulation. We also discuss what has been learned from therapies that target circadian rhythms and how we may use current knowledge to develop more individually designed treatments. In Dollish et al., they review the clinical literature and provide mechanistic insights into how circadian rhythms contribute to mood disorders. Background: The impact of thyroid hormones on the human brain and behavior is well-established, with documented correlations between thyroid dysfunction and psychiatric disturbances. Non-thyroidal illness, often termed euthyroid sick syndrome, is characterized by altered thyroid function parameters in response to systemic or acute psychiatric illness. Limited data exist on thyroid dysfunction rates in major psychiatric disorders in the Indian population. Objective: This study aimed to assess thyroid dysfunction prevalence in depressive disorders among psychiatric outpatients, examining the correlation between endocrinopathy and depression. Methodology:A prospective study was conducted at SLN Medical College and Hospital in 2019-2020. Patients were diagnosed using ICD-10 criteria, and thyroid function tests were performed using the Chemiluminescence method. Samples were collected from newly diagnosed, non-medicated patients over 18 years, excluding those with pre-existing thyroid disorders or medications affecting thyroid function. Results: Out of 138 patients, 37.7% with depression exhibited abnormal thyroid function tests. Hypothyroidism was observed in 30.8%, hyperthyroidism in 15.2%, and nonspecific alterations in 53.9% of cases. Abnormalities were more common in females (43.8%) than males (32.3%). Elevated serum triiodothyronine (T3) levels were significantly associated with depressive patients. Discussion: The study revealed a higher prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in depressive disorders than reported in previous studies. Abnormalities were more prevalent in females, aligning with the higher prevalence of mood disorders in women. Non-specific alterations in iodothyronine concentrations were often associated with euthyroid sick syndrome in patients with depression. Conclusion: This study emphasizes the association between thyroid dysfunction and depressive disorders, showcasing the complexity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid system's role in mood regulation. Maladaptive cognitions appear to be associated with the severity of mood symptoms in bipolar disorder (BD), but findings are mixed and generally cross-sectional in design. This study (n = 331) explored the associations between maladaptive cognitions and mood symptoms in BD over time (3 months), and the potential mediating effect of self-compassion cross-sectionally. Dysfunctional attitudes, maladaptive perfectionism and maladaptive metacognitions were explored separately with depressive and manic symptoms, and with current mood state in BD. The results showed maladaptive metacognitions to be the only significant predictor of depression at 3-month follow-up (β = 0.31, p <.001), with no relationship to mania over time. Cross-sectionally, self-compassion partially mediated the relationship between all maladaptive cognitions and depression, with higher dysfunctional cognitions and lower self-compassion predicting increased severity of depressive symptoms. Only the relationship between dysfunctional attitudes and mania was partially mediated by self-compassion, however, the relationship was weak and suggestive that higher self-compassion predicted increased mania. The study duration limited the possible analysis. Future longitudinal research is needed. Also, the study sample was not representative of the clinical population, making results less generalisable. Additionally, limited significant findings regarding manic symptoms supports the need for further research into active cognitions during this phase of BD. Maladaptive metacognitions were predictive of future depression severity, therefore, further exploration of metacognitive therapy for BD should be explored. Aim: There have been limited prospective investigations of early clinical markers involved in mood regulation and diagnosis change in young patients. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in impulsivity and defence mechanisms in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) with acute symptoms and remission compared to healthy controls (HC), and possible psychological predictors of diagnosis conversion. Methods: Seventy‐nine young MDD or BD patients and 40 HC were enrolled in a two‐year prospective study. A comprehensive clinical interview focused on clinical and psychological evaluation during follow‐up visits. The severity of depressive symptoms was evaluated using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS‐17), whilst the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) was used for hypo/manic symptoms during each control visit. All patients completed the Defence Style Questionnaire (DSQ‐40) and Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS‐11). Results: Patients used more immature defences, and had significantly higher total impulsivity scores than controls. BD patients had elevated motor and non‐planning impulsivity compared with HC and MDD subjects. Total and non‐planning impulsiveness remained elevated in euthymia in BD and MDD compared to HC. There were no statistically significant differences in total defence styles and impulsiveness scores at baseline vs. euthymia in MDD or BD patients groups. Significantly higher dissociation scores at baseline discriminated depressive patients who convert to BD in their diagnosis. Conclusions: Patients with acute mood symptoms used more frequent immature defences and had significantly higher total impulsivity scores than healthy persons. A lack of differences in total defence styles and impulsiveness between patients with acute symptoms and after reaching euthymia in both MDD and BD groups indicates that they are independent of disease status. Rumination has been proposed as an important risk factor for depression, whereas mindful attention is considered a protective form of self-focusing. Experimental studies have demonstrated differential effects of these modes when induced in the lab. However, their impact on daily life processes is poorly understood, particularly in individuals vulnerable to depressive relapses. The aim of our study was to examine short- and longer-term effects of repeated brief rumination and mindful self-focus inductions during daily life on momentary mood, cognitions, and cortisol in patients with remitted depression (rMDD) as well as in healthy individuals, and to identify their potential differential effects in these groups. The study involved repeated short ambulatory inductions of a ruminative or a mindful self-focus during daily life with additional assessments of momentary mood, rumination, self-acceptance, and cortisol over 4 consecutive days in a sample of patients with rMDD (n = 32, ≥2 lifetime episodes, age 19–55 years) and matched healthy controls (n = 32, age 21–54 years). Multilevel models revealed differential immediate effects of the two induction modes on all momentary mood and cognitive outcomes (all p' s <.001), but not on cortisol. Detrimental effects of rumination over mindful self-focus inductions were particularly strong for cognitions in the patient group. Longer-term effects of the inductions over the day were lacking. This study underlines immediate deteriorating effects of an induced ruminative compared to a mindful self-focus on momentary mood and cognitions during daily life in patients with rMDD and in healthy individuals. The observed stronger rumination-related reactivity in patients suggests heightened cognitive vulnerability. Understanding rumination- and mindfulness-based mechanisms of action in real-life settings can help to establish mechanism-based treatment options for relapse prevention in depression. Visual stress is thought to reflect cortical excitability and has been associated with many neurological, neuropsychiatric, and neurodevelopmental conditions. However, its relationships with symptoms of depression and anxiety have not yet been elucidated. We conducted two separate studies to first examine visual stress in a longitudinal community sample of 104 participants (aged 12–24) in association with prospective symptoms of depression, anxiety, and distress after 3 months, and subsequently in a cross-sectional epidemiological sample of 530 participants (aged 15–24) to validate its associations with current mood and distress symptoms. The Pattern Glare Test was used to examine visual stress to three grating patterns with the spatial frequencies (SF) of 0.3, 2.3, and 9.4 cycles per degree (cpd). Other known factors of mental health, including functioning, as well as resilience, hopelessness, and loneliness, were also assessed at baseline. In both studies, we showed that perceptual distortions were highest toward the pattern with mid-SF (2.3 cpd). Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that greater visual stress was significantly associated with not only baseline but also 3-month symptom outcomes, even when accounting for age, years of education, days of no functioning, resilience, hopelessness, and loneliness. Our findings suggest the importance of visual stress in understanding and predicting poor mental health outcomes. As mental health can lead to far-reaching consequences that extend to adulthood, our findings may inform state-of-the-art innovative strategies for the prediction of poor mental health outcomes and suggest visual stress as a potential marker for early risk detection among young people. The aim of the study was to explore the prevalence of specific symptoms of depression in athletes and to test differences in the likelihood of athletes exhibiting these symptoms across age, sex, type of team sport, and level of competition. A sample of Icelandic male and female team sport athletes (N = 894, 18–42 years) was included in the study. Of the athletes exhibiting clinically significant depressive symptoms on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, 37.5% did not exhibit core symptoms of depression. Compared with males, females were significantly more likely to exhibit depressed mood, feelings of worthlessness/guilt, and problems with sleep, fatigue, appetite, and concentration. Within males, differences were mostly related to neurovegetative aspects of depression (sleep and appetite), whereas in females, differences were related to cognitive/emotional aspects (e.g., depressed mood, guilt/worthlessness). Sleep loss robustly disrupts mood and emotion regulation in healthy individuals but can have a transient antidepressant effect in a subset of patients with depression. The neural mechanisms underlying this paradoxical effect remain unclear. Previous studies suggest that the amygdala and dorsal nexus (DN) play key roles in depressive mood regulation. Here, we used functional MRI to examine associations between amygdala- and DN-related resting-state connectivity alterations and mood changes after one night of total sleep deprivation (TSD) in both healthy adults and patients with major depressive disorder using strictly controlled in-laboratory studies. Behavioral data showed that TSD increased negative mood in healthy participants but reduced depressive symptoms in 43% of patients. Imaging data showed that TSD enhanced both amygdala- and DN-related connectivity in healthy participants. Moreover, enhanced amygdala connectivity to the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) after TSD associated with better mood in healthy participants and antidepressant effects in depressed patients. These findings support the key role of the amygdala-cingulate circuit in mood regulation in both healthy and depressed populations and suggest that rapid antidepressant treatment may target the enhancement of amygdala-ACC connectivity. Now astrocytes appear to be the key contributors to the pathophysiology of major depression. Evidence in rodents shows that chronic stress is associated with a decreased expression of astrocytic GFAP-immunoreactivity within the cortex in addition to changes in the complexity and length of astrocyte processes. Furthermore, postmortem brains of individuals with depression have revealed a decrease in astrocyte density. Notably, astrocytes are extensively coupled to one another through gap junctions to form a network, or syncytium, and we have previously demonstrated that syncytial isopotentiality is a mechanism by which astrocytes function as an efficient system with respect to brain homeostasis. Interestingly, the question of how astrocyte network function changes following chronic stress is yet to be elucidated. Here, we sought to examine the effects of chronic stress on network-level astrocyte (dys)function. Using a transgenic aldh1l1-eGFP astrocyte reporter mouse, a six-week unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS) paradigm as a rodent model of major depression, and immunohistochemical approaches, we show that the morphology of individual astrocytes is altered by chronic stress exposure. Additionally, in astrocyte syncytial isopotentiality measurement, we found that UCMS impairs the syncytial coupling strength of astrocytes within the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex—two brain regions that have been implicated in the regulation of mood. Together, these findings reveal that chronic stress leads to astrocyte atrophy and impaired gap junction coupling, raising the prospect that both individual and network-level astrocyte functionality are important in the etiology of major depression and other neuropsychiatric disorders. Immune dysregulation is implicated in the pathophysiology of both bipolar and major depressive disorder, while immune cell ratios (IRCs) have recently been proposed as clinically applicable immune biomarkers. We investigated IRCs differences in affective disorders and their association with current mood episodes and clinical features. This retrospective cohort study analyzed neutrophil–lymphocyte (NLR), monocyte–lymphocyte (MLR), and platelet–lymphocyte (PLR) ratios upon admission in 135 affective disorder in-patients with mania (MA, n = 36), bipolar depression (BiD, n = 38), and unipolar depression (MDD, n = 61). Demographic, clinical, and immune data were extracted from medical records. Monocyte count was significantly higher in BiD compared to MDD (p < 0.001). Multivariable regression models suggested higher NLR in MA compared to MDD (p = 0.039), higher MLR in both MA and BiD compared to MDD (p < 0.001 and p = 0.004 respectively), while we found neither group differences in PLR nor an effect of type and duration of hospitalization, current psychotic, or suicidal features and psychiatric history on IRCs. Here, we show that IRCs are elevated in bipolar disorder versus MDD and affected by mood episode, while MLR could be especially valuable in the differential diagnosis between bipolar and unipolar depression. IRCs represent inexpensive, routinely accessible and clinically applicable biomarkers with diagnostic validity in affective disorders that could be easily implemented as illness activity indicators, to better follow the course of illness and eventually predict relapse or treatment response and, thus, guide therapeutic targeting. Lumateperone is indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults and for depressive episodes associated with bipolar I or II disorder (bipolar depression) in adults, as monotherapy and as adjunctive therapy with lithium or valproate (Calabrese et al., 2021). It is currently under evaluation for the treatment of major depressive disorder (www.ClinicalTrials.gov). Lumateperone acts by selectively modulating serotonin, dopamine, and glutamate neurotransmission in the brain. However, other mechanisms could be involved in the actions of lumateperone, and because of the connection between the immune system and psychiatric health, we hypothesized that lumateperone might improve symptoms of depression, at least in part, by normalizing pathologic inflammation. Here, we show that in male and female C57BL/6 mice subjected to an acute immune challenge, lumateperone reduced aberrantly elevated levels of key proinflammatory cytokines (e.g., IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α) in both brain and serum; lumateperone also reduced proinflammatory cytokines in male mice under acute behavioral stress. Further, we demonstrate that lumateperone altered key genes/pathways involved in maintaining tissue integrity and supporting blood-brain barrier function, such as claudin-5 and intercellular adhesion molecule 1. In addition, in acutely stressed male Sprague Dawley rats, lumateperone conferred anxiolytic- and antianhedonic-like properties while enhancing activity in the mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 pathway in the PFC. Together, our preclinical findings indicate that lumateperone, in addition to its ability to modulate multiple neurotransmitter systems, could also act by reducing the impact of acute inflammatory challenges. Background: Major depression disorder (MDD) is a mental disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. This disease has negative impacts on quality of life and psychological-related functions. This is a multifactorial disorder; both genetic background and environmental factors have their role. Antidepressants are prescribed as the first line of treatment for patients with depressive disorders. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants are used to treat MDD and anxiety; however, some patients do not respond to them. Regarding that, magnesium plays a major role in mood regulation; therefore, this study aimed to investigate the role of magnesium supplement in patients with MDD and under an SSRI treatment regimen. Methods: In this randomized, double-blind controlled trial, 60 patients with major depressive disorders based on the DSM-V diagnosis referred to Golestan Hospital in Ahvaz, Iran, were included. The eligible patients were categorized randomly into two thirty-people groups receiving magnesium (intervention) and placebo (control) along with SSRI for 6 weeks. To evaluate the depression status, the Beck II test was applied. Subjects were examined before and after the intervention. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of demographic characteristics (P > 0.05). The mean Beck scores at the beginning of the study and the second week after the intervention were not different between the two groups (P = 0.97, P = 0.56), whereas the mean Beck scores were lower in the intervention group than in the control group in the fourth and sixth weeks after the intervention (P = 0.02 and P = 0.001, respectively). Conclusion: Administration of Mg supplement for at least 6 weeks might improve depression symptoms. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a mental disorder characterized by impairment in mood regulation, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt, low self-worth, disturbed sleep and appetite, feelings of tiredness, and poor concentration. It is estimated to be the third leading cause of disability and about 350 million people suffer from depression worldwide. Treatment selection include consideration of the patient's personal history of medication response, side effects, drug preference, coexisting psychiatric disorders, accessibility, cultural, social, and situational factors. The main objectives in this study are to analyze prescription pattern of antidepressants, to assess treatment outcomes and partial remission in depression, and to evaluate the side effects in patients receiving antidepressant medications. The investigators will obtain the patient demographic data, disease information, medical issues, and other relevant patient information by interviewing them and referring patient medical records in the hospital (both inpatients and outpatients) documented in a self-designed case report form along with assessment of Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HMDR), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and Morisky Green Levine Medication Adherence questionnaire (MGLMAQ). Adherence to medications was assessed using Morisky Green Levine Scale in 70 previously diagnosed subjects. Most of the subjects (32.85%) were found to have low adherence to medications, whereas 20.00% were highly adherent. There was a high rate of antidepressant discontinuation without consultation with physician. A closer communication between patients and physicians should be encouraged to enhance persistence to medications and improve outcomes. Recognition of depression as a significant risk factor for noncompliance with medical treatment carries the potential to improve medical practice, reduce patient disability, enhance patient functioning, and improve healthcare outcomes. The intricate interplay existing between gut microbiota and homeostasis extends to the realm of the brain, where emerging research underscores the significant impact of the microbiota on mood regulation and overall neurological well-being and vice-versa, with inflammation playing a pivotal role in mediating these complex interactions. This comprehensive review explores the complex interplay between inflammation, alterations in gut microbiota, and their impact on major depressive disorder (MDD). It provides a cohesive framework for the puzzle pieces of this triad, emphasizing recent advancements in understanding the gut microbiota and inflammatory states' contribution to the depressive features. Two directions of communication between the gut and the brain in depression are discussed, with inflammation serving as a potential modulator. Therapeutic implications were discussed as well, drawing insights from interventional studies on the effects of probiotics on gut bacterial composition and depressive symptoms. Objective: Mood instability is associated with the onset of bipolar disorder (BD) in youth with a family history of the illness. In a clinical trial with youth at high risk for BD, we examined the association between mood instability and symptomatic, psychosocial, and familial functioning over an average of 2 years.Method: Youth (aged 9-17 years) with major depressive disorder or other specified BD, current mood symptoms, and a family history of BD were rated by parents on a mood instability scale. Participants were randomly assigned to 4 months of family-focused therapy or enhanced care psychoeducation, both with medication management as needed. Independent evaluators rated youth every 4-6 months for up to 4 years on symptom severity and psychosocial functioning, whereas parents rated mood instability of the youth and levels of family conflict.Results: High-risk youth (N = 114; mean age 13.3 ± 2.6 years; 72 female) were followed for an average of 104.3 ± 65.8 weeks (range, 0-255 weeks) after randomization. Youth with other specified BD (vs major depressive disorder), younger age, earlier symptom onset, more severe mood symptoms, lower psychosocial functioning, and more familial conflict over time had higher mood instability ratings throughout the study period. Mood instability mediated the association between baseline diagnosis and mother/offspring conflict at follow-up (Z = 2.88, p = .004, αβ = 0.19, 95% CI = 0.06-0.32). Psychosocial interventions did not moderate these associations.Conclusion: A questionnaire measure of mood instability tracked closely with symptomatic, psychosocial, and family functioning in youth at high risk for BD. Background: The present study aimed to explore, for a better understanding, the relationship between dysfunctional coping mechanisms, functionality, and quality of life in patients with major depression, during an acute episode and euthymic phase. 65 patients diagnosed with recurrent major depressive disorder were included in a longitudinal study, during which they were evaluated twice, clinically, for coping mechanisms, and also for different life quality areas. For the first time, all patients were assessed during an acute depressive episode and for the second time after 6 months of euthymia. Coping mechanisms were assessed with the Brief COPE scale, the severity of depression was evaluated by the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-17 items, the quality of life with the WHOQOL-Bref, and the functionality with GAF. Results: The coping mechanisms, represented by self-distraction and self-blame, were identified as being significantly correlated with the areas of life quality, mental health, and general environment, for patients having an acute depressive episode. In the euthymic phase of major depression, all dysfunctional coping strategies showed statistically significant associations with the quality-of-life domains and the coping mechanism represented by disengagement was significantly correlated with the global functionality. Emotional regulation strategies have been shown to have either positive or negative relations with depression. However, very few of the studies that have analyzed this issue have taken into account the role of anhedonia in depression. This is the first study to jointly examine the specific contributions of both adaptive and maladaptive emotional regulation strategies to depression and anhedonia. The study uses a community sample (N = 427). The analyses indicated a positive, medium-sized relationship between adaptive strategies and (the lack of) anhedonia, as well as a negative relationship between these strategies and depressive symptoms. The study also found a strong, positive association between maladaptive strategies and depressive symptoms, as well as a medium-sized, negative relationship between maladaptive strategies and (the lack of) anhedonia. Structural equation modelling analysis confirmed the specific contribution of adaptive and maladaptive regulation strategies to both affective dimensions. These findings underscore the important roles that both kinds of emotional regulations strategies can play in understanding depression and, therefore, in informing treatment of depressive disorders and anhedonia. Background: Internet interventions provide a unique opportunity to increase widespread accessibility of treatment at reduced and scalable costs (Muñoz, 2010). Previous research has explored the impact of specific types of activities on participant's main depressive symptoms i.e., anhedonia, or enjoyment levels, and mood (Bunge et al., 2017).The aim of the current study is to improve the understanding of the effects of online micro interventions targeting motivation, enjoyment levels, and mood.Methods: A total of 838 participants recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk participated in an online calendar activity to improve mood.Results: A regression analysis showed that confidence and motivation were significantly associated with mood (R2 = 0.467, p < .001). The total number of activities reported in the last two days was associated with participants' current mood (R2 = 0.203, p < .001) and enjoyment (R2 = 0.156, p < .001). Interestingly, only mastery and meaningful activities improved mood but not pleasant activities. Regarding enjoyment, pleasant and meaningful activities impacted current enjoyment of the day but not mastery activities. Lastly, only individuals who engaged with the calendar showed a significant increase in motivation and confidence.Limitations: Depression may moderate engagement and was not analyzed in the present study. Additionally, there were no follow-up analyses that looked at the long-term effects of the intervention or changes in actual activity engagement.Conclusions: Online micro interventions have a promising future as an intervention that can impact the mood and motivation for change. War is an unpredictable and unbearable burden for the human psyche. Existential threats, fear for life, and loss of loved ones lead to the increase in the incidence of non-psychotic borderline disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder. Children are the most vulnerable part of the population subject to psychotraumatic experiences. While being in a war zone, they undergo traumatic experiences that deform their consciousness, values, and worldview. Children show signs of mood swings, depression, unprovoked aggression, obsessive behavior, anxiety attacks, and and expect reoccurrence of traumatizing events. The article analyzes speech features of children who have witnessed the Russian invasion of Ukraine that started on February 24, 2022. The research explores verbal expressions of young Ukrainian refugees from the war zone, identifies the speech disorders caused by the experienced stress. The study describes specific verbalization of the psychological state of the young witnesses of missile and artillery attacks, the children from the occupied territories as well as those who have not witnessed the military actions but who have had to live in refugee camps. In particular, the paper focuses on the ways to verbalize fear, anxiety, obsessive states, types of verbal aggression and means chosen by the research subjects to talk about deaths of their loved ones. Knowledge of the neural underpinnings of processing sad information and how it differs in people with depression could elucidate the neural mechanisms perpetuating sad mood in depression. Here, we conduct a 7 T fMRI study to delineate the neural correlates involved only in processing sad information, including pons, amygdala, and corticolimbic regions. We then conduct a 3 T fMRI study to examine the resting-state connectivity in another sample of people with and without depression. Only clinically depressed people demonstrate hyperactive amygdala–pons connectivity. Furthermore, this connectivity is related to depression symptom severity and is a significant indicator of depression. We speculate that visual sad information reinforces depressed mood and stimulates the pons, strengthening the amygdala–pons connectivity. The relationship between this connectivity and depressive symptom severity suggests that guiding one's visual attention and processing of sad information may benefit mood regulation. A study on patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) suggests that a specific sadness-processing connection between the amygdala and pons appears to be dysfunctional among people with MDD and associated with severity of depression. Regulation of emotions is generally associated exclusively with the brain. However, there is evidence that peripheral systems are also involved in mood, stress vulnerability vs. resilience, and emotion‐related memory encoding. Prevalence of stress and mood disorders such as major depression, bipolar disorder, and post‐traumatic stress disorder is increasing in our modern societies. Unfortunately, 30%–50% of individuals respond poorly to currently available treatments highlighting the need to further investigate emotion‐related biology to gain mechanistic insights that could lead to innovative therapies. Here, we provide an overview of inflammation‐related mechanisms involved in mood regulation and stress responses discovered using animal models. If clinical studies are available, we discuss translational value of these findings including limitations. Neuroimmune mechanisms of depression and maladaptive stress responses have been receiving increasing attention, and thus, the first part is centered on inflammation and dysregulation of brain and circulating cytokines in stress and mood disorders. Next, recent studies supporting a role for inflammation‐driven leakiness of the blood–brain and gut barriers in emotion regulation and mood are highlighted. Stress‐induced exacerbated inflammation fragilizes these barriers which become hyperpermeable through loss of integrity and altered biology. At the gut level, this could be associated with dysbiosis, an imbalance in microbial communities, and alteration of the gut–brain axis which is central to production of mood‐related neurotransmitter serotonin. Novel therapeutic approaches such as anti‐inflammatory drugs, the fast‐acting antidepressant ketamine, and probiotics could directly act on the mechanisms described here improving mood disorder‐associated symptomatology. Background: Affective characteristics are associated with depression severity, course, and prognosis. Patients’ affect captured by clinicians during sessions may provide a rich source of information that more naturally aligns with the depression course and patient-desired depression outcomes. Objective: In this paper, we propose an information extraction vocabulary used to pilot the feasibility and reliability of identifying clinician-recorded patient affective states in clinical notes from electronic health records. Methods: Affect and mood were annotated in 147 clinical notes of 109 patients by 2 independent coders across 3 pilots. Intercoder discrepancies were settled by a third coder. This reference annotation set was used to test a proof-of-concept natural language processing (NLP) system using a named entity recognition approach. Results: Concepts were frequently addressed in templated format and free text in clinical notes. Annotated data demonstrated that affective characteristics were identified in 87.8% (129/147) of the notes, while mood was identified in 97.3% (143/147) of the notes. The intercoder reliability was consistently good across the pilots (interannotator agreement [IAA] >70%). The final NLP system showed good reliability with the final reference annotation set (mood IAA=85.8%; affect IAA=80.9%). Conclusions: Affect and mood can be reliably identified in clinician reports and are good targets for NLP. Background: The two metabolites of vitamin D; serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) and D2 (25(OH)D2), and their independent roles in mood regulation are unexplored. This study aims to examine 25(OH)D3 and 25(OH)D2 and their interplay with depression symptoms. Materials and Methods: Utilizing data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007–2011, 2013–2014), a cross-sectional study was conducted. Depression was assessed using the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire, and those with total score ≥5 were considered as having mild to severe depression symptoms. 25(OH)D3 and 25(OH)D2, the clinical markers of vitamins D3 and D2, were measured. Weighted logistic regressions were utilized to examine the adjusted association between 25(OH)D3 and depression, and the effect modification of 25(OH)D2. Results: The sample included 11,471 participants aged 20–80 years. Of those, 23.4% reported symptoms of depression, 28.9% had 25(OH)D3 deficiencies(<20 ng/mL), and 21.5% exhibited presence of 25(OH)D2(>0.6 ng/mL). After adjustment, among participants with presence of 25(OH)D2, those who had 25(OH)D3 deficiencies were more likely by 54% to report depression symptoms (OR = 1.54,95%CI:1.14–2.07). In fact, among participants with nearly no 25(OH)D2 presence, a significant effect estimate between 25(OH)D3 deficiency and depression symptom was not observed(OR = 1.11,95%CI:0.94–1.31). Conclusions: Both vitamin D metabolites retain an independent and significant role in mood regulation. The study provides valuable insights on vitamin D3 and its significant relationship with depression symptoms in the presence of vitamin D2. Background: Although major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by a pervasive negative mood, research indicates that the mood of depressed patients is rarely entirely stagnant. It is often dynamic, distinguished by highs and lows, and it is highly responsive to external and internal regulatory processes. Mood dynamics can be defined as a combination of mood variability (the magnitude of the mood changes) and emotional inertia (the speed of mood shifts). The purpose of this study is to explore various distinctive profiles in real-time monitored mood dynamics among MDD patients in routine mental healthcare. Methods: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data were collected as part of the cross-European E-COMPARED trial, in which approximately half of the patients were randomly assigned to receive the blended Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (bCBT). In this study a subsample of the bCBT group was included (n = 287). As part of bCBT, patients were prompted to rate their current mood (on a 1–10 scale) using a smartphone-based EMA application. During the first week of treatment, the patients were prompted to rate their mood on three separate occasions during the day. Latent profile analyses were subsequently applied to identify distinct profiles based on average mood, mood variability, and emotional inertia across the monitoring period. Results: Overall, four profiles were identified, which we labeled as: (1) "very negative and least variable mood" (n = 14) (2) "negative and moderate variable mood" (n = 204), (3) "positive and moderate variable mood" (n = 41), and (4) "negative and highest variable mood" (n = 28). The degree of emotional inertia was virtually identical across the profiles. Conclusions: The real-time monitoring conducted in the present study provides some preliminary indications of different patterns of both average mood and mood variability among MDD patients in treatment in mental health settings. Background: Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is a pleasant physiological tingling sensation induced by certain visual and auditory triggers. ASMR has been shown to reduce stress and increase positive mood, but its effects have not yet been studied in populations with clinically severe symptoms. The present study aimed to investigate whether the experience of ASMR improved mood and reduced arousal in people with and without insomnia and depression symptoms.Methods: 1,037 participants (18-66 years) completed online questionnaires assessing insomnia and depression symptom severity followed by questionnaires on current mood and arousal levels before and after watching an ASMR video. The independent variables were the participant's group (insomnia, depression, insomnia and depression combined or control) and whether they experienced ASMR during the video. The dependent variables were the change in mood and arousal levels after watching the video.Results: As predicted, all participants showed significantly increased relaxation and improved mood after watching the video with the largest effects for participants who experienced ASMR and for participants in the combined and depression groups. No difference was found between the insomnia and control groups.Limitations: It is not known how many participants were familiar with ASMR videos prior to taking part in the study (nor whether this is important). Also, the categorization of participants into the ASMR group was based on self-report and thus, not verified.Conclusions: Results suggest that ASMR videos have the potential to be used to improve mood and reduce arousal with implications for alleviating symptoms of insomnia and depression. The habenula (Hb) is a small, evolutionarily conserved epithalamic structure implicated in functions such as reward and mood regulation. Prior imaging work suggests that Hb's structural and functional properties may relate to treatment response in depression and other mood disorders. We used multimodal MRI techniques to investigate the potential involvement of Hb in response to subcallosal cingulate area deep brain stimulation (SCC-DBS) for treatment-resistant mood disorders. Using an automated segmentation technique, we compared Hb volume at baseline and at a subsequent post-operative timepoint (4.4 ± 3.0 years after surgery) in a cohort of 32 patients who received SCC-DBS. Clinical response to treatment (≥50% decrease in HAMD-17 from baseline to 12 months post-operation) was significantly associated with longitudinal Hb volume change: responders tended to have increased Hb volume over time, while non-responders showed decreased Hb volume (t = 2.4, p = 0.021). We additionally used functional MRI (fMRI) in a subcohort of SCC-DBS patients (n = 12) to investigate immediate within-patient changes in Hb functional connectivity associated with SCC-DBS stimulation. Active DBS was significantly associated with increased Hb connectivity to several prefrontal and corticolimbic regions (TFCE-adjusted p Bonferroni < 0.0001), many of which have been previously implicated in the neurocircuitry of depression. Background: Cyclothymic-hypersensitive temperament (CHT) has been related to both depression and bipolarity, as well as to suicidality. Recently, a psychometrically sound way of assessment has been validated in youth (Cyclothymic-Hypersensitive Temperament Questionnaire, CHTQ), but data on clinical populations are still scant. Aim of our study is to further explore the structure and other psychometric properties of the revised version of CHTQ and its clinical implications in clinical samples.Methods: The study is based on a dataset of patients with unipolar depression, bipolar disorder and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (243 patients, 135 males, mean age 14.22 ± 2.16 years, age range 9-18 years), compared to a community sample of adolescents (398 subjects, 95 boys, mean age 15.47 ± 1.96 years, age range 10-18 years) RESULTS: The two-correlated factor structure of CHT has been confirmed, with a moodiness/hypersensitiveness factor, correlated with internalizing symptoms, and an impulsiveness/emotional dysregulation factor, correlated with externalizing symptoms. All CHTQ scores correlate with global functioning. CHTQ total scores discriminate patients from healthy controls. Only CHTQ impulsiveness/emotional dysregulation subscale score is higher in bipolar patients, compared to unipolar depression and ADHD, whereas neither CHTQ moodiness/hypersensitiveness subscale score nor CHTQ total score discriminate between clinical groups.Limitation: Data on current mood states are unavailable. Patients were recruited in a third level clinic. The unipolar depression group is relatively small.Conclusion: CHT may be a rapid and reliable screening and diagnostic tool in the clinical practice with youth, exploring the cyclothymic dimension in different psychiatric disorders. This study used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to explore the correlates of suicidal ideation (SI) instability in patients hospitalized for depression and SI. Thirty-nine adult inpatients were given smartphones with visual analogue scales to rate current depressed mood, anger/irritability, feeling socially connected, and SI three times a day throughout hospitalization. Affective Lability Scales (ALS) were also completed at baseline. SI instability was correlated with SI intensity, depressed mood instability, and social connection instability. Social connection instability was not associated with SI instability after controlling for depressed mood instability. ALS scores were not associated with EMA-derived SI instability. Participants with multiple past suicide attempts experienced greater SI instability. More research examining the clinical significance of SI instability is warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Depression is a common mental disorder characterized by disturbances in mood, thoughts, or behaviors. Serious games, which are games that have a purpose other than entertainment, have been used as a nonpharmacological therapeutic intervention for depression. Previous systematic reviews have summarized evidence of effectiveness of serious games in reducing depression symptoms; however, they are limited by design and methodological shortcomings. Objective: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of serious games in alleviating depression by summarizing and pooling the results of previous studies. Methods: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) statement. The search sources included 6 bibliographic databases (eg, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, IEEE Xplore), the search engine "Google Scholar," and backward and forward reference list checking of the included studies and relevant reviews. Two reviewers independently carried out the study selection, data extraction, risk of bias assessment, and quality of evidence appraisal. Results of the included studies were synthesized narratively and statistically, as appropriate, according to the type of serious games (ie, exergames or computerized cognitive behavioral therapy [CBT] games). Results: From an initial 966 citations retrieved, 27 studies met the eligibility criteria, and 16 studies were eventually included in meta-analyses. Very low-quality evidence from 7 RCTs showed no statistically significant effect of exergames on the severity of depressive symptoms as compared with conventional exercises (P=.12). Very low-quality evidence from 5 RCTs showed a statistically and clinically significant difference in the severity of depressive symptoms (P=.004) between exergame and control groups, favoring exergames over no intervention. Very low-quality evidence from 7 RCTs showed a statistically and clinically significant effect of computerized CBT games on the severity of depressive symptoms in comparison with no intervention (P=.003). Conclusions: Serious games have the potential to alleviate depression as other active interventions do. However, we could not draw definitive conclusions regarding the effectiveness of serious games due to the high risk of bias in the individual studies examined and the low quality of meta-analyzed evidence. Interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) strategies are considered as individuals' tendency to make use of other individuals to get a sense of safety or reduce the severity of distress. Despite the emerging evidence on the association of IER strategies with measures of psychological distress, examination of its interaction with other vulnerability or resilience factors is essential for better understanding of this concept. Negative Mood Regulation Expectancies (NMRE) is a resilience factor, that is conceptualized as an individual's beliefs in the effectiveness of the strategies that they use to deal with difficult emotions and the present study aimed to examine how IER interact with NMRE in the prediction of depression and anxiety. Data were collected from 433 adults (M = 29.47, SD = 9.01) through questionnaires assessing IER, NMRE, depression, and anxiety. Results indicated that perspective taking was not significantly related to depression among individuals who have high levels of NMRE. On the other hand, low frequency of using perspective taking as an emotion regulation mechanism appeared to be linked with higher depression in individuals who have reported low levels of NMRE. The purpose of this pilot cross-sectional study was to investigate the relationship between depressed mood, based on the Kihon Checklist (KCL), and higher-level functional capacity in communitydwelling older adults. We analyzed 112 older adults (age 78.2 ± 7.3 years, 91 women, 81.3%) recruited from local senior centers and through local newspaper advertisements in Ibaraki City. Depressed mood was assessed using the depressed domain of the KCL. The Japan Science and Technology Agency Index of Competence (JST-IC) was used to assess higher-level functional capacity. Age, sex, cognitive function, current medical history, number of medications taken, certification of needed support, grip strength, and walking speed were assessed. The two groups were compared based on the presence or absence of depressed mood. Factors associated with depressed mood were analyzed using age- and sex-adjusted logistic regression analyses. Thirty-three (29.5%) participants were found to have depressed mood. The median JST-IC was 10.0. Participants with depressed mood were significantly older and had lower JST-IC (total and daily life management), cognitive function, and physical function and more medication than those without. Logistic regression analysis showed no significant factors associated with depressed mood. Further investigation is needed in the future using simple depressive mood screening from the KCL. In a previous study comparing two representative chronotype questionnaires to screen for delayed sleep-phase disorder, six items from the simplified language version of Composite Scale of Morningness (CSM) have been found to be useful and effective for screening evening-type person. In this study, we reverse coded the six items from CSM and named them Evening Chronotype Scale (ECS). The primary aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties, validity, and test–retest reliability of the ECS when administered on mood disorder patients. The secondary aim was to further examine the relationship between circadian preferences and symptoms of mood disorders. The study sample was of 472 mood disorder patients including major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder I, and bipolar disorder II. The 13-item full version CSM and 6-item ECS were externally validated by self-reported sleep time, wake time, sleep latency, depressive symptoms, hypomanic symptoms, quality of life, and impulsivity. Cronbach's alpha was calculated for the internal consistency of the ECS, and the test–retest reliability analysis was also performed. Our results suggest that the ECS is a reliable and valid instrument to assess circadian preference in mood disorder patients. First, the ECS showed moderate to good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.727). Also, it showed external validity comparable to that of the 13-item CSM. Participants who were more evening-oriented according to the ECS slept and woke up later, took longer time to fall asleep, showed more depressive and hypomanic symptoms, and showed lower quality of life and higher impulsivity. As circadian rhythm disruption has been shown to affect the regulation of mood symptoms in patients with mood disorders, assessment of circadian preferences may be crucial in clinical settings. Background: Estrogen fluctuations throughout the lifespan may contribute to major depressive disorder (MDD) risk in women through effects on brain networks important in stress responding, and mood regulation. Although there is evidence to support ovarian hormone treatment for peri-menopausal depression, postmenopausal use has not been well examined. The objective of this study was to investigate whether estrogen modulation of the neural and emotional cognitive responses to stress differs between postmenopausal women with and without MDD history.Methods: 60 postmenopausal women completed an fMRI psychosocial stress task, after receiving no drug or 3 months of daily estradiol (E2). fMRI activity and subjective mood response were examined.Results: In women without a history of MDD, E2 was associated with a more negative mood response to stress and less activity in emotional regulation regions. In women with a history of MDD, E2 was associated with a less negative mood response to stress and less activity in emotion perception regions.Limitations: This study was limited by open-label estradiol administration and inclusion of participants using antidepressants.Conclusions: These results support a differential effect of estrogen on emotional and neural responses to psychosocial stress in postmenopausal women with MDD history and may reflect a shift in brain activity patterns related to emotion processing following menopause. Objectives: Many studies have indicated a close relationship between ADHD and mood symptoms in university students. In the present study, we explore the role of daily functional impairments and executive functioning in the ADHD–mood relationship. Method: A total of 343 adults (126 males) filled out (a) the Conners' Adult ADHD Rating Scale, (b) the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale, (c) the Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale, and (d) the Executive Function Index Scale. Results: The correlation between mood symptoms and ADHD was.48 (moderate correlation) and dropped to.15 (weak correlation) when controlling for functional problems and executive functioning. Hierarchical regression analyses showed that both functional impairments and executive functioning significantly explained 42% to 53% of the variance of mood symptoms. The addition of ADHD symptoms to the model slightly increased the explained mood variance by only 1%. Background and objectives: Mood instability (MI) is a stable trait associated with psychiatric disorders, yet there is a lack of tools to measure MI. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the Mood Instability Questionnaire-Trait (MIQ-T) to evaluate MI in mood disorder patients. Material and methods: Items were taken from various established questionnaires to create an initial list of MIQ-T questions. Data from 309 psychiatric patients (n = 309; 62 major depressive disorder, 58 bipolar I disorder, and 189 bipolar II disorder) were gathered from their medical records and were utilized in an exploratory factor analysis to clarify the underlying components of MI. Then, anonymous survey data from 288 individuals from the general population were included in the analysis as a comparison group. Associations between MIQ-T and other previously validated clinical instruments for mood disorders were examined to test external validity. Results: The exploratory factor analysis demonstrated that the five-factor structure (Lability, Upward Tendency, Downward Tendency, Childhood Instability, and Seasonality) of 59 items was the most appropriate with clear, cohesive features. MIQ-T exhibited high internal consistency (α = 0.96) and moderate to strong correlations with other previously validated clinical instruments, which were consistent with theoretical predictions, providing evidence of criterion validity. Short forms were also created to address the high internal consistency value, which can indicate redundancy, and to increase the approachability of the measure. We found that the patients with bipolar II disorder had higher MIQ-T scores than the patients with bipolar I disorder or major depressive disorder and the comparison group. Little is known about the neuropsychiatric and neurophysiological differences that characterize abnormal recovery following a concussion. The present study aimed to investigate the psycho-affective, cognitive, and neurophysiological profiles of symptomatic, slow-to-recover, concussed athletes, asymptomatic concussed athletes, and control athletes. Seventy-eight athletes (26 symptomatic, 26 asymptomatic, 26 control) completed the Beck Depression Inventory-II, Profile of Mood States, and 2-Back task. Additionally, event-related brain potentials were recorded during an experimental three-stimulus visual Oddball paradigm. Compared to asymptomatic and control groups, the symptomatic group reported greater depression symptoms and negatively altered mood states. Symptomatic athletes also exhibited poorer cognitive performance on the 2-Back task, indicated by more errors and slower reaction time. ERP analyses indicated prolonged P3b latency for both symptomatic and asymptomatic groups, but symptomatic athletes also exhibited reduced P3b amplitude compared to both asymptomatic and control groups. For the asymptomatic group, correlations were observed between time since last concussion and functioning, but no relations were observed within the symptomatic group for any measure. The current findings provide valuable information regarding the psycho-affective, cognitive, and neurophysiological profiles of athletes with and without persistent symptoms following a concussion and highlight the need to assess and treat symptomatic, slow-to-recover athletes from a multidimensional and integrative perspective.
