The aim of the present work was to investigate the behavior of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) system for the treatment of oily wastewater. A bench scale MBR was fed with synthetic wastewater containing diesel fuel. Organic carbon, hydrocarbon and ammonium removal, kinetic constants, extracellular polymeric substances production, and membrane fouling rates were monitored. The MBR plant was operated for more than 200 days, and the results highlighted good carbon removal and nitrification, suggesting a sort of biomass adaptation to hydrocarbons. Membrane fouling analysis showed an increase in total resistance, likely due to hydrocarbons, which caused an irreversible fouling (pore blocking) mainly due to oil deposition. The behavior of a University of Cape Town (UCT) membrane bioreactor (MBR) system was investigated for use in biological nutrient removal from real wastewater. The pilot plant was in operation for a period of 165 days, during which an extensive data gathering campaign was conducted. The pilot plant was started up by inoculating it with activated sludge from a nearby wastewater treatment plant, and it was fed by real municipal wastewater characterized by high organic nitrogen concentrations attributable to discharges from industrial wastewater and sporadic landfill leachate. Carbon and biological nutrient removal processes, a sludge production process, and a membrane fouling mechanism were analyzed and discussed. The organic nitrogen levels, which were higher than typical values for municipal wastewater, caused ammonification phenomena. This led to intense nitrification and denitrification activities. The pilot plant showed satisfactory efficiency in terms of average removal efficiencies for both carbon and nitrogen. However, lower efficiencies were recorded for phosphorus removal as an indirect effect of the intense denitrifying activity of the phosphorus-accumulating organisms in the anoxic tank. Abstract Stricter effluent limits, water shortage conditions, land availability requires today even more the needs of advanced wastewater treatments. Attractive solutions come from membrane bioreactors (MBR), Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge (IFAS) or combinations (i.e., IFAS-MBRs). One crucial aspect for the applicability of this overall new technology, compared to the conventional activated sludge systems, is the lack of knowledge for design and manage (e.g., kinetic constants, optimal operative conditions etc.). In view of the above frame, the aim of the present study was to assess the kinetic and stoichiometric parameters of bacterial species in MBRs by means of respirometric techniques. Plant configurations, operational conditions and wastewater features (domestic/industrial) were analysed. Four different MBR plants were investigated: i) sequencing batch MBR subjected to a gradual salinity increase; ii) pre-denitrification MBR treating saline wastewater contaminated by hydrocarbons; iii) University of Cape Town (UCT) MBR treating domestic wastewater subjected to a carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio variation; iiii) UCT- IFAS -MBR treating domestic wastewater. Results show a significant influence on biomass respiratory activity from both plant configurations and operational conditions. The salinity increase severely affected the activity of autotrophic species, while heterotrophic community was mainly influenced by the C/N variation. Moreover, it was observed a specialization in the IFAS-MBR configuration, with the suspended biomass more affine to organic matter, whilst biofilm in the nitrification process. The respirometric analysis confirmed to be an effective tool for the evaluation of the biomass kinetic and stoichiometric parameters. The results of this study can be useful for the application of mathematical models in the design phase and for the monitoring of biomass viability during plant operations. An integrated membrane bioreactor (MBR) model was previously proposed and tested. The model provides a comprehensive and detailed description of the nitrogen biological removal processes with respect to up-to-date literature. This paper presents a sensitivity and uncertainty analysis aimed at identifying the key factors affecting the variability of the model predictions. The Standardized Regression Coefficients (SRC) method was adopted for the sensitivity analysis. The uncertainty analysis was employed by running Monte Carlo simulations by varying only the value of the key factors affecting the model outputs. The sensitivity analysis combined with the uncertainty analysis applied here enabled to gain useful insights about the robustness of the model. By means of the SRC method 45 model factors (of 122) were selected as important. The results obtained here allowed to investigate the advantage of a detailed description of the nitrogen transformation bioprocesses (nitrification/denitrification) in terms of model accuracy and uncertainty bandwidth. The model allows to simulate the intermediate product during nitrification/denitrification, thus providing the possibility to control the nitrogen compounds that favour the formation of nitrous oxide. Abstract: Mathematical modelling of membrane bioreactors (MBRs) for wastewater treatment has targeted either the biological processes (treatment quality target) as well as various aspects of system management. However, the high number of interactions among the involved physical–chemical processes, hampers a straightforward mathematical modelling. This circumstance is much more emphasized for submerged MBR systems where the membrane is immersed in an aeration tank. One of the main crucial points that prevents a comprehensive understanding is the interpretation of the fouling phenomenon and its connections with the biological processes. An overall mathematical model for MBR has not been completely established yet. Indeed, existing MBR models are generally focused only on some of the involved processes (e.g. biological, physical, chemical, etc.) to analyze limited MBR aspects. However, a comprehensive integrated mathematical approach aimed at an in-depth analysis is warmly recommended in order to optimize the whole MBR system. Seeking the development of the area, the paper presents an integrated MBR model that simulates and takes into account both biological and physical processes. An innovative calibration protocol was applied to evaluate the model parameter values as well. This protocol is based on a preliminary global sensitivity analysis to reduce the number of model parameters to be calibrated to the most influential ones. The calibration protocol consists of a novel step-wise Monte Carlo based calibration of the subset of influential parameters. The key point of the step-wise procedure is that calibration is carried out for sub-groups of variables instead of solving a complex multi-objective function. Abstract: Foaming in Membrane BioReactor (MBR) is a frequently discussed topic. Some authors reported that the phenomenon is due to filamentous organisms, like at Conventional Activated Sludge (CAS) plants. However, in recent years, other authors reported that the Extra-cellular Polymer Substances (EPSs) concentration is an important factor for controlling foam as well. Nevertheless, even if a number of MBR plants are affected by foaming, presently there are no suitable methods to evaluate the phenomenon. To facilitate the study of this controversial phenomenon in an MBR system, certain foam tests proposed in the past for CASPs were investigated. The results of the tests were able to adequately measure quantity, stability and quality of the foam. In particular, the Scum Index increased proportionally with the EPS concentration and mixed liquor viscosity; Foam Power was mainly correlated with the protein concentration of in the EPS; Foam Rating was also correlated with the EPS concentration. Abstract: A mathematical model for the simulation of physical-biological organic removal by means of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) has been previously developed and tested. This paper presents an analysis of the uncertainty of the MBR model. Particularly, the research explores the applicability of the Generalised Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) methodology that is one of the most widely used methods for investigating the uncertainties in the hydrology and that now on is spreading in other research field. For the application of the GLUE methodology, several Monte Carlo simulations have been run varying the all model influential parameters simultaneously. The model was applied to an MBR pilot plant located at the Acqua dei Corsari WWTP (Palermo, IT) where water quality data were gathered. In particular, the MBR pilot plant consists of a lab-scale hollow fibre membrane module in submerged configuration. The GLUE methodology enabled us to gain useful insight about the robustness of the model approach. Particularly, the results showed that the biological process is influenced mainly by the parameters characterising the formation and degradation of Soluble Microbial Products, whereas the fouling phenomenon is mainly influenced by the backwashing efficiency. The application of the GLUE methodology shows that the model considered for the MBR simulation is somehow too simple in order to predict plants performances. Indeed, GLUE enabled us to identify the main model components that needs to be improved and where much attention has to be paid both in terms of model algorithms and quality data to be gathered. This studies confirmed the suitability of the GLUE methodology as a powerful tool for simplified screening methodology to assess the uncertainty also in the field of wastewater treatment. In order to prevent hydrocarbon discharge at sea from ships, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) enacted the MARPOL 73/78 convention in which any oil and oil residue discharged in wastewater streams must contain less than 5 ppm hydrocarbons. Effective treatment of this petroleum-contaminated water is essential prior to its release into the environment, in order to prevent pollution problem for marine ecosystems as well as for human health. Therefore, two bench scale membrane bioreactors (MBRs) were investigated for hydrocarbon biodegradation. The two plants were initially fed with synthetic wastewater characterised by an increasing salinity, in order to enhance biomass acclimation to salinity. Subsequently, they were fed with a mixture of synthetic wastewater and real shipboard slops (with an increasing slops percentage up to 50% by volume). The results indicated a satisfactory biomass acclimation level in both plants with regards to salinity, providing significant removal efficiencies. The real slops exerted an inhibitory effect on the biomass, partially due to hydrocarbons as well as to other concomitant influences from other compounds contained in the real slops difficult to evaluate a priori . Nevertheless, a slight adaptation of the biomass to the new conditions was observed, with increasing removal efficiencies, despite the significant slops percentage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of a sharp variation of C/N ratio in a moving bed membrane bioreactor (MB-MBR) pilot plant treating high strength wastewater has been investigated. The experimental campaign was divided into two periods, each characterized by a different C/N ratio (namely, 2.5 and 15, Period 1 and Period 2, respectively). The MB-MBR system was analyzed in terms of organic carbon removal, nitrification efficiency, biokinetic activity and fouling behavior. The results showed that the nitrification process was severely affected by lower C/N value and by high concentration of ammonia. It was noticed an extensive stress effect on the autotrophic bacteria. Furthermore, it was observed an increase of the resistance related to particle deposition into membrane pores, likely due to a worsening of the cake layer features, with a reduction of the “pre-filter” effect, also related to the increase of the total Extracellular Polymeric Substances production with the C/N ratio. Abstract: Over the last two decades, Membrane Bioreactors (MBRs) emerged even more for wastewater treatment, ensuring high removal efficiencies as well as very small footprint requirements. Indeed, in this kind of process, a modification in biomass activity and viability can exist compared to that of a CAS process. In this context, respirometric analysis represents a reliable tool in order to evaluate the actual biomass kinetic parameters, to insert in mathematical models in the design phase, as well as to monitor the biomass viability, especially when these processes are operated with high SRT values. The paper presents some results of respirometric techniques applied for the characterisation of wastewater and biomass activity in a pilot UCT-MBR plant for nutrient removal, operating with high SRT. In particular, the respirometric tests were specifically aimed at investigating heterotrophic and autotrophic bacterial activity. The pilot plant was built at Palermo WWTP and consisted of three reactors: anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic, followed by an aerobic compartment containing two submerged hollow fibre membrane modules with typical recycling lines. The kinetic parameters for heterotrophic bacteria resulted lower respect to the CAS; regarding the nitrifying bacteria, the kinetic constants were in the range of CAS, suggesting a good nitrification activity. The aim of the present study was to compare the oxygen transfer efficiency in a conventional activated sludge and a membrane bioreactor system. The oxygen transfer was evaluated by means of the oxygen transfer coefficient and α-factor calculation, under different total suspended solids concentration, extracellular polymeric substances, sludge apparent viscosity and size of the flocs. The oxygen transfer coefficient and α-factor showed an exponential decreasing trend with total suspended solid, with a stronger oxygen transfer coefficient dependence in the conventional activated sludge compared to the membrane bioreactor. It was noted that the oxygen transfer coefficient in the conventional activated sludge become comparable to that in membrane bioreactor when the total suspended solid concentration in the conventional activated sludge was higher than 5 g L−1. Operating under high carbon to nitrogen ratio, the oxygen transfer coefficient increased in both conventional activated sludge and membrane bioreactor because of sludge deflocculation and it was noticed a weaker dependence of the oxygen transfer coefficient with total suspended solid. The results indicated that the most important parameters on the oxygen transfer efficiency were in order: the total suspended solid concentration, flocs size, sludge apparent viscosity and extracellular polymeric substances content. Based on the influence of the main biomass features affecting the oxygen transfer coefficient and considering the typical operating conditions in both systems, those of membrane bioreactor appeared to be more favorable to oxygen transfer efficiency. The paper provides a useful insight about some peculiarities of oxygen transfer in a conventional activated sludge and a membrane reactor system, highlighting new and useful information in the light of a more sustainable management of these systems.
