Meltwater inputs to moulins regulate Greenland Ice Sheet sliding speeds by controlling water pressure in the most connected regions of the subglacial drainage system. While moulin storage capacities are a critical control on subglacial water pressure, few observations exist to constrain storage. Using direct observations inside moulins, we show that moulin cross‐sectional areas can be at least 500 m2, far greater than is observed at the surface or assumed in models. Moulin water level measurements and numerical modeling reveal that diurnal variability in moulin water pressure is highly attenuated in moulins with large storage volumes (∼3% ice pressure), relative to moulins with smaller storage volumes (∼25% ice pressure). Because large variability in moulin water pressure is linked to processes that ultimately reduce ice sliding speeds, ice sliding speeds in areas drained by large moulins may be more sensitive to long‐term increases in meltwater than areas drained by small moulins. Plain Language Summary: Each summer season on the Greenland Ice Sheet, meltwater forms stream networks on the ice surface that deliver water to moulins, which are holes in the ice that carry the water to the base of the ice sheet. When water backs up into moulins, and the water pressure beneath the ice increases, glacier sliding accelerates, leading to more rapid loss of ice into the ocean. We directly explored two moulins that contained immense storage volumes that are much larger than previously assumed to exist. Our observations of water levels inside moulins, and a model of water flow through the ice, indicate that storage of water within these large moulins during daily meltwater pulses has a big impact on how much the water pressure beneath the ice changes. Our work suggests that moulin sizes influence the interactions between summer melt and sliding of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Consequently, we need a more complete understanding of how moulin volumes vary in order to better predict how future increases in melt will impact the rate of ice loss from Greenland and to constrain its future contribution to sea level rise. The thermal structures of eruption-fed, subglacial volcaniclastic deposits are poorly understood because their emplacement is hazardous to observe or obscured by the glacier. Determining deposit emplacement temperature, however, supports improved understanding of the flow dynamics and emplacement processes of volcaniclastic material beneath a glacier. Understanding the emplacement temperatures of ancient volcanic deposits is also important because they can be used, in combination with field studies, to infer the eruptive environment. Here, we use paleomagnetic techniques to quantify the emplacement temperatures of two ancient, proximal, eruption-fed density current deposits at Tongariro volcano, New Zealand. Stepwise thermal demagnetisation of lithic and recycled juvenile block-sized clasts reveal randomly orientated directions of magnetisation, suggesting that the clasts were rotated within the flow but not heated. Additional data from thermomagnetic, hysteresis, and isothermal remanent magnetisation tests indicate that the principal carrier of magnetic remanence is magnetite, and that the magnetisation directions are a primary remanence rather than post-depositional chemical remanent magnetisations. Following systematic removal of any viscous remanent magnetisation, the post-emplacement equilibrium temperatures for the deposits can be estimated at <150 °C. The paleomagnetic data support field evidence for rapid cooling of clasts and waterlain deposition. The deposit-forming eruptions took place beneath a summit glacier where the freshly erupted tephra was efficiently cooled by mixing with meltwater. Lithic blocks and recycled juvenile bombs were entrained and remobilised within the cool currents that drained along meltwater channels beneath the ice. This is the first study in which paleomagnetic data have been used to determine the equilibrium temperatures of subglacial density current deposits. Abstract While the supraglacial hydrology of debris-covered glaciers is relatively well studied, almost nothing is known about how water is transported beneath the glacier surface. Here, we report the results of sixteen fluorescent dye tracing experiments conducted in April–May 2018 over the lowermost 7 km of the high-elevation, debris-covered Khumbu Glacier, Nepal, to characterise the glacier's surface and subsurface drainage system. Dye breakthroughs indicated a likely highly sinuous and channelised subsurface hydrological system draining water from the upper part of the ablation area. This flowpath was distinct from the linked chain of supraglacial ponds present along much of the glacier's lower ablation area, through which water flow was extremely slow (∼0.003 m s−1), likely reflecting the study's timing during the pre-monsoon period. Subsurface drainage pathways emerged at the glacier surface close to the terminus, and flowed into small near-surface englacial reservoirs that typically delayed meltwater transit by several hours. We observed rapid pathway changes resulting from surface collapse, indicating a further distinctive aspect of the drainage of debris-covered glaciers. We conclude that the surface and subsurface drainage of Khumbu Glacier is both distinctive and dynamic, and argue that further investigation is needed to refine the characterisation and test its regional applicability to better understand future Himalayan debris-covered glacier meltwater delivery to downstream areas. The temporal variations in electrical conductivity and the stable isotopes of water, δD and δ18O, were examined at Chhota Shigri Glacier, India, to understand water sources and flow paths to discharge. Discharge is highly influenced by supraglacially derived meltwater during peak ablation, and subglacial meltwaters are more prominent at the end of the melt season. The slope of the best fit linear regression line for δD versus δ18O, for both supraglacial and runoff water, is lower than that for precipitation (snow and rain) and surface ice, indicating strong isotopic fractionation associated with the melting processes. The slope of the local meteoric water line (LMWL) is close to that of the global meteoric water line (GMWL), reflecting that the moisture source is predominantly oceanic. The d-excess variation in rainwater confirms that the southwest monsoon is the main contributor during summer while the remainder including winter is mostly influenced by westerlies. In the south-central sector of the former Fennoscandian Ice Sheet, imprints of the sub-glacial hydrological system are present as "glaciofluvial corridors," formed by glacial meltwater at the ice-bed interface during the Bølling-Allerød warm period. Many of these are interpreted as tunnel valleys and are commonly characterized by hummocks on their valley floors. Contemporary ice sheets produce increased amounts of meltwater as a consequence of global warming, and occasionally it is observed that meltwater is suddenly released from supra- and subglacial lakes, suggesting a highly dynamic subglacial hydraulic system. Studies of the imprints and deposits from such systems on formerly glaciated terrain can expand our knowledge of ice-sheet response to increased meltwater production. Here, we study sediments exposed in two hummocks within the tunnel valley at Hörda, south Sweden. One of the investigated hummocks is superposed by a small esker. This hummock consists of a diamict interpreted as a subglacial traction till, observed to be overlain by esker sediment. A second hummock displays deformed sediment at its base, which is glaciotectonically intercalated with above-lying diamict, a sub-glacial traction till. The sub-till sediments, interpreted as proglacial outwash, were deformed by overriding ice. The sediment was dated using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), inferring a late MIS 4 or early MIS 3 age, congruent with other observations of sub-till sediments in south Sweden. The investigated hummocks on the floor of the Hörda tunnel valley are interpreted to have been formed by sub-glacial fluvial erosion simultaneous with tunnel valley formation, most probably during the latest deglaciation of the area. We know less about subglacial meltwater flow properties in distributed inefficient and semi-efficient systems in comparison to those of ice marginal eskers and proglacial environments. While previous studies have indicated the overall common presence of upper-flow-regime (UFR) bedforms in glacigenic settings, facies expressions of subglacial meltwater flows remain poorly documented. Three ca. 3 m deep and up to 70 m long trenches excavated across a triangle-shaped subglacial landform called a murtoo in a Lateglacial to Holocene meltwater route in SW Finland provide a detailed window into sedimentary structures presumably formed ca. 40–50 km away from the coeval subaqueous margin of the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet (FIS). The aim of this paper is to document small-scale bedforms, which formed subglacially by meltwater flow and to characterize the proximal and central parts of the studied murtoo during its early evolutionary phase. We defined seven main facies types that characterize the depositional processes of the unit. Overall, the studied deposits reflect increasing meltwater delivery through time and are characterized by abrupt lateral changes in sedimentary structures and grain size. While the initial deposits are dominated by massive and horizontally laminated silt with sand lenses interpreted as lower-flow-regime deposits, the latter sediments are characterized by sinusoidal stratification, sigmoidal cross-stratification and scours with backsets or chaotic fill interpreted as deposits of antidunes, humpback dunes, chutes-and-pools and cyclic steps of the upper-flow regime. The upper-flow-regime bedforms developed on a 1 m high and 15 m long bed slope and are associated with the formation of a short-lived enlarged water-filled cavity or pond, where supercritical density flows allowed for the deposition of upper-flow regime bedforms. The final coarse-grained murtoo head-bar development, characterized by planar-cross stratified gravel and pebbly sand, indicates avalanche processes that were controlled by grain size. Our results confirm that the core of the murtoo is depositional and meltwater processes played a key role in its deposition. Despite the subglacial setting with a subaqueous ice-sheet margin, the meltwater flow was not permanently characterized by pipe-flow conditions. Overall, the findings contribute to the understanding of semi-distributed subglacial meltwater systems during the retreat of a continental ice sheet (FIS) in a rapidly warming climate. The aim of this study is to present the first evidence of triangular-shaped till landforms and related erosional features indicative of subglacial drainage within the ice stream bed of the Scandinavian ice sheet in Finland. Previously unidentified grouped patterns of Quaternary deposits with triangular landforms can be recognized from LiDAR-based DEMs. The triangular landforms occur as segments within geomorphologically distinguishable routes that are associated with eskers. The morphological and sedimentological characteristics as well as the distribution of the triangular landforms are interpreted to involve the creep of saturated deforming till, flow and pressure fluctuations of subglacial meltwater associated with meltwater erosion. There are no existing models for the formation of this kind of large-scale drainage systems, but we claim that they represent an efficient drainage system for subglacial meltwater transfer under high pressure conditions. Our hypothesis is that the routed, large-scale subglacial drainage systems described herein form a continuum between channelized (eskers) and more widely spread small-scale distributed subglacial drainage. Moreover, the transition from the conduit dominated drainage to triangular-shaped subglacial landforms takes place about 50–60 km from the ice margin. We provide an important contribution towards a more realistic representation of ice sheet hydrological drainage systems that could be used to improve paleoglaciological models and to simulate likely responses of ice sheets to increased meltwater production. To understand the sources and sinks of sulphate and associated biogeochemical processes in a High Arctic environment, late winter snowpacks, the summer melt-waters and rock samples were collected and analysed for major ions and stable isotope tracers (δ 18 O, δ 34 S). The SO 4 2 ¯/Cl¯ ratio reveal that more than 87% of sulphate (frequently > 95%) of total sulphate carried by the subglacial runoff and proglacial streams was derived from non-snowpack sources. The proximity of non-snowpack sulphate δ 34 S (∼8–19‰) to the δ 34 S of the major rocks in the vicinity (∼−6 to +18‰) suggest that the non-snowpack sulphate was principally derived from rock weathering. Furthermore, Ca 2+ +Mg 2+ /SO 4 2 ˉ molar shows that sulphate acquisition in the meltwaters was controlled by two major processes: 1) coupled-sulphide carbonate weathering (molar ratio ∼ 2) and, 2) re-dissolution of secondary salts (molar ratio ∼ 1). The δ 34 S–SO 4 = +19.4‰ > δ 34 S–S of rock, accompanied by increased sulphate concentration also indicates an input from re-dissolution of secondary salts. Overall, δ 18 O composition of these non-snowpack sulphate (−11.9 to −2.2‰) mostly stayed below the threshold δ 18 O value (−6.7 to −3.3‰) for minimum O 2 condition, suggesting that certain proportion of sulphate was regularly supplied from anaerobic sulphide oxidation. Lake Neuchâtel, located at the foothills of the Jura Mountains in Western Switzerland, is one of the numerous perialpine lakes on the Swiss Plateau. It overlies a SW–NE trending paleovalley eroded during Quaternary glaciations through a branch of the Rhône Glacier extending northeastwards over the Swiss Plateau. This paleovalley, cut into Molasse siliciclastics and accessorily Mesozoic carbonates, was filled by late Quaternary sediments. A grid of high-resolution seismic profiles (5-inch3 and 1-inch3 airguns) images at lake-scale the up to 200 m thick sedimentary sequence down to the bedrock. The latter is locally affected by a major strike-slip fault zone (La Lance) that has influenced glacial erosion. The infill consists of four seismic stratigraphic units (Units U1–U4), the shallowest two being subdivided into three subunits each (U3a,b,c and U4a,b,c). Units U1 and U2 are directly related to the Rhône Glacier and Jura Ice Cap activity. Unit U1 corresponds to acoustically chaotic subglacial deposits interpreted as tills (and locally eskers) and is associated to the Last Glacial Maximum (Würm Glacial Maximum, WGM) and probably to the beginning of deglaciation of the Rhône Glacier and Jura Ice Cap. Unit U2 is restricted to the central axis of the glacial paleovalley and reaches a thickness of over 100 m at some places. Its dominantly transparent seismic facies is interpreted as pro- to subglacio-lacustrine fine sediments deposited during the main phase of deglaciation. In the southern part of the lake, higher acoustic amplitudes indicate more compacted, coarser sediments forming a mound structure, interpreted as moraine deposits. This moraine facies points to phases of Rhône Glacier readvances during Unit U2, as seen in other perialpine lakes. With its continuous and subparallel reflections, Subunit U3a marks the beginning of a glacio-lacustrine, and later, lacustrine environment. Subunit U3a extends over the whole lake and contains two more localized subunits (U3b and U3c) displaying prograding and downlapping reflections, as well as signatures of mass transport deposits. These two subunits are interpreted as deltaic sequences from the La Mentue (Subunit U3b) and Areuse (Subunit U3c) tributary rivers. The base of these sequences marks the synchronous onset of a major melting phase in respectively the Rhône Glacier and Jura Ice Cap. Correlation with previously obtained core data indicates that the lower part of Unit U3 most certainly dates back to the Oldest Dryas and that the U3 depositional processes lasted at least until the end of the Younger Dryas and possibly until the Boreal biozone. By contrast with the deltaic seismofacies of the Mentue River (Subunit U3b), which stops close to the base of Subunit U4a, the Areuse River deltaic unit (Subunit U3c) continues to build up as Subunit U4c deposited synchronously with subunits U4a and U4b, probably because of the larger size, higher altitude and partly glacial nature of the catchment area of the Areuse River. Subunits U4a and U4b, with continuous and subparallel seismic reflections extending over the whole lake, are interpreted as lacustrine sequences. Correlation with previously collected sediment cores in Lake Neuchâtel and similar deposits in Lake Annecy dates the onset of lacustrine sedimentation sometimes between the end of the Younger Dryas and the Boreal biozones. This reconstruction of Lake Neuchâtel seismic stratigraphic infill, partly correlated with sediment data, sheds new light on the history of the northeastern branch of the Rhône Glacier and Jura Ice Cap deglaciation. In particular, it highlights the synchronous onset of clastic sediment input due to massive meltwater inflow from the two ice masses, leading to the formation of deltaic sequences during the Lateglacial. Understanding Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) hydrology is essential for evaluating response of ice dynamics to a warming climate and future contributions to global sea level rise. Recently observed increases in temperature and melt extent over the GrIS have prompted numerous remote sensing, modeling, and field studies gauging the response of the ice sheet and outlet glaciers to increasing meltwater input, providing a quickly growing body of literature describing seasonal and annual development of the GrIS hydrologic system. This system is characterized by supraglacial streams and lakes that drain through moulins, providing an influx of meltwater into englacial and subglacial environments that increases basal sliding speeds of outlet glaciers in the short term. However, englacial and subglacial drainage systems may adjust to efficiently drain increased meltwater without significant changes to ice dynamics over seasonal and annual scales. Both proglacial rivers originating from land-terminating glaciers and subglacial conduits under marine-terminating glaciers represent direct meltwater outputs in the form of fjord sediment plumes, visible in remotely sensed imagery. This review provides the current state of knowledge on GrIS surface water hydrology, following ice sheet surface meltwater production and transport via supra-, en-, sub-, and proglacial processes to final meltwater export to the ocean. With continued efforts targeting both process-level and systems analysis of the hydrologic system, the larger picture of how future changes in Greenland hydrology will affect ice sheet glacier dynamics and ultimately global sea level rise can be advanced. Abstract: Proglacial meltwater streams draining out of the Himalayan glaciers carry considerable amounts of suspended sediment, with a variety of particle sizes, because of the supraglacial, englacial, and subglacial debris, as well as formation of sediments from erosion by the movement of the ice. This paper examines particle size transported in the proglacial meltwater stream of Gangotri Glacier for seven consecutive melt seasons (May–October, 2000–2006) in order to provide information on (i) temporal variations in the particle size distribution, (ii) texture and mineralogy of the sediments, and (iii) origin and evacuation pattern of the sediments. Our results indicate dominance of silt size (0.002–0.06mm) particles (71%) followed by sand size (0.06–0.6mm) particles (24%) and clay size (<0.002mm) particles (5%) during the melt season, with increased variation as melt season progresses. The sediment contains quartz, feldspar, mica, illite, and kaolinite minerals, which represent a poor to poorly sorted fraction with a coarse to fine skewed textural distribution. Overall, this study indicates a subglacial evacuation pattern of the suspended sediment based on (i) size classification, (ii) higher percentage of coarser particles toward the end of the melting season, (iii) symmetrical to positively skewed with a kurtosis of mesokurtic to platykurtic texture, and (iv) a less-rounded shape of particle size. Our result on the evolution of meltwater pathways indicates a progressively better interconnected drainage system with advancing melt season. Abstract: The hydraulic behaviour of meltwater during subglacial basaltic eruptions in temperate ice is of paramount importance in understanding the eruptive processes, lithofacies and architecture of the edifices formed. Hydraulics also determines the timing, location and volume of meltwater discharge, which may be sudden and catastrophic and via subglacial and/or supraglacial routes. Increasing our knowledge of meltwater hydraulics is therefore important for understanding, predicting and mitigating the impact of meltwater release on vulnerable human communities. New observations about eruption-related meltwater hydraulics are presented for well-exposed glaciovolcanic lava-fed deltas on James Ross Island, Antarctica, and accounts of historical eruptions are also re-examined to identify the major meltwater discharge routes. The study provides the first conceptual model for how meltwater escapes supraglacially. In the absence of a crevassed layer (which will dominate any meltwater flow), overflowing may be initiated by enhanced rates of seepage, despite the intrinsically low hydraulic conductivities of snow and firn. Once overflowing is established, the rate of spillway incision is a likely overriding control on the evolution of the system and whether the discharge is unstable (fast) or stable (slower). The James Ross Island sequences demonstrate that meltwater discharge is highly dynamic and may have involved both subglacial and supraglacial escape. Subglacial discharge probably occurs throughout basaltic tuya eruptions but some periods may be dominated by concurrent overflowing. It is still unclear if overflowing systems are sufficiently stable to enable the growth of laterally extensive glaciovolcanic lava-fed deltas. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

ABSTRACT Evidence of conspicuous repeated seasonal to annual deposition of glaciofluvial and glaciolacustrine sequences within a structurally complex interlobate esker segment in SW Finland is presented. The time-transgressive, overlapping depositional sequences consist of deposits from two successive melt seasons, including three vertically stacked lithofacies associations: (1) massive to stratified coarse gravels = summer deposits; (2) trough and ripple cross-stratified fine-grained deposits = autumn to winter deposits; and (3) sandy stratified beds = spring deposits. The depositional environment of each lithofacies association involves a transition from subglacial or submarginal tunnel to a subaqueous re-entrant environment, which then passes to a proglacial glaciolacustrine environment. The study also presents evidence of headward extension of subglacial tunnel deposits, related to the rapid shifting of a tunnel expansion point during the increasing spring discharge, which occupied the old tunnel exit: this mode of annual deposition has not been reported previously in esker studies. The good preservation of the rhythmic lithofacies associations is suggested as resulting from interlobate depositional conditions associated with rapidly decaying icestreams. Therefore, the depositional model may provide a key to recognizing time-transgressive interlobate eskers that form an important geomorphological and sedimentological record of meltwater activity during the last deglaciation of the Fennoscandian and Laurentide ice sheets. The identification of time-transgressive interlobate eskers and associated palaeo-icestream behaviour is an essential step forward for more accurate models of ice sheet behaviour and palaeoclimatic reconstructions. The expansion of ice sheets over soft, sandy substrates was widespread in the Early Palaeozoic, during the Late Ordovician glaciation of North Africa and Arabia. Similarly, large parts of southern Africa were glaciated by soft bedded ice sheets in the Late Palaeozoic Ice Age. An unanswered question is the extent to which subglacial deformation involved the passive recycling of unconsolidated materials, or the active production of new sediment through erosion and shearing. Here, we compile thin section data dovetailed with scanning electron microscope imagery from sandy subglacial substrates from South Africa, Algeria and Libya. Six samples were collected from soft-sediment striated pavements, i.e., surfaces that were sheared and deformed subglacially in an unconsolidated state. The samples show a considerable variation in deformation style but a unifying trait is the occurrence of striated and facetted quartz sand grains. This paper first presents the history of ideas on s-form formation, with an emphasis on meltwater models. The main approach is based on form similarity between modern erosional marks and subglacial s-forms. Form similarity is then extended to process similarity, which promotes understanding of s-forms. Three classes of erosional marks are identified: obstacle scours, basin-shaped erosional marks and landforms related to escarpment flow. Identification is based on form, with recognition of elements, though it mainly depends on recognition of the whole form in much the same way as we recognize family members or familiar flowers. Flow conditions related to the various flow features are determined by flow visualization and computational fluid dynamics. Some s-forms are produced in flume models, though most are natural features observed in the field. Examples from beneath past ice-sheets are seen in the field and illustrated by air and ground photographs, satellite images and DEM (digital elevation model). The results of this work show remarkable similarity between modern erosional marks and ancient, subglacial s-forms. Consequently established processes are attributed to ancient forms. In turn, s-forms may be used abductively to interpret subglacial, hydrological conditions. The lack of waning stage bedforms scoured into primary forms, suggests that erosional marks form under abruptly terminating, catastrophic flow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
