Presents the 2011 reports from the Annual Meetings of the Regional Psychological Associations. The following Associations are featured: The Eastern Psychological Association, Midwestern Psychological Association, New England Psychological Association, Rocky Mountain Psychological Association, Southeastern Psychological Association, Southwestern Psychological Association, Western Psychological Association, and the Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology.

This paper shows how a significant, but short-lived, episode in Scotland's educational history--the rise and decline of Socialist Sunday Schools (SSSs) in the first half of the twentieth century--provoked controversial debates about issues that continue to have relevance today. The first half of the paper explains the origins of SSSs, their links to adult political groups, the form and content of their meetings, and publications designed to advance their agenda. It also describes the criticisms they received from religious leaders and Conservative politicians, on the grounds that they undermined faith and preached revolution. This leads into the second part, which considers whether SSSs might be regarded as agencies of indoctrination, promoting a version of citizenship that sought to subvert existing institutions and disrupt the social order. It is argued that complete neutrality in educational systems is not possible and that a study of the SSS movement has considerable potential as an educational resource, particularly for teachers of history, politics and social studies.

This article talks about a meeting on "Higher Education in Recessionary Times" on March 24, 2010, which was hosted by the Society for Higher Education Research Policy Network. Although the meeting did take place in the context of an expected General Election, and on budget day, there was a general sense on the day that whoever won the Election (or as it turned out, did not quite win), there were going to be cuts across the public sector and those cuts would include higher education. The Russell Group of universities had made something of a pre-emptive strike (or pre-emptive resistance) to this policy: arguing that any cuts in higher education would fundamentally damage the standing and the quality of higher education in Britain. Yet, as everyone who works in higher education at present knows only too well, the playing field of higher education is anything but a level one; on the contrary it is marked by peaks and troughs that disrupt much of the "play" of degree level work. It was in this context that Carole Leathwood welcomed the delegates and spoke in her introduction of the considerable material and social part that higher education plays in the British economy. Thinking about cuts in the very process by which citizens become holders and makers of knowledge rather than passive recipients of it, is not in itself a welcome prospect. Yet, part of the essential self-reflection of the day was to examine some of the ways in which cuts in higher education might be imposed and the impact that they would make. In all, the day provided considerable material for further thought and debate and was generally agreed to have been extremely useful in bringing together a wide range of those working in higher education.

This is the first in a series of papers that emanate from the author's doctoral research. This research explores academic advising as a profession and academic advisors as practitioners in the South African Higher Education sector; it focuses on advising within the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management (FCLM) at a research-intensive public university in South Africa. During the period of investigation, academic advising engagements between students and the author were logged, thus forming a baseline dataset for the doctoral study. In phase one of the data analysis, baseline data were coded and clustered into overarching and subsidiary categories. The baseline dataset consists of 34 subsidiary categories, which form part of 7 overarching categories; it contains 2240 entries based on 1023 consultations with 614 individual students during the three-year period under investigation. Using Archer's (1995, 2000, 2005) notions about Social Realism as a theoretical framework, the author critically scrutinises the complex nature of the work that academic advisors do in a layered analysis of the baseline data. The author posits that it is through these layers of interpretation that one moves from the layer of the Empirical (experiences), through the layer of the Actual (events), to what Archer calls "the Real", that is, the layer of mechanisms or underlying driving forces that brings about what happens in the layers of the Empirical and the Actual. This paper focuses specifically on the role of the academic advisor; it postulates inferential observations about academic advising by using the baseline dataset as a way in while keeping the academic advisor central to the discussion.

This article is based on the presidential address I delivered at the 12th annual meeting of the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading, held in June 2005 in Toronto. I trace the development of my interest in instructional research in, first, beginning reading and, more recently, in comprehension, and I describe studies designed to improve the reading of children with learning disabilities and others at risk for academic failure. I conclude with reflections about what our field has accomplished over the last few decades and with suggestions about what might profitably be given further attention at the present time.

This paper explores my role as co-convener of the Network for Educational Action Research in Ireland (NEARI). NEARI is a network where action researchers convene and engage in critical reflection and dialogue around their practice. They examine how they might enhance their practice and, in doing so, seek a way in which they might improve their world. The paper outlines how I, too, might enhance my work with NEARI, as I develop my living theory. It is inspired by my values of social justice, care and inclusion. I outline how I draw on the work of Whitehead (2018) as I ask questions like "How do I enhance what I am doing?" and "How do I live my values as fully as I can in the process?" I claim that in NEARI, I work towards creating and maintaining a network as an environment in which people feel supported and cared for and where they can become active agents in their own learning process. Within that learning process, I also encourage people to embrace Living Theory and self-study action research for themselves. The paper depicts how I value myself as a knowledge-creator as I offer descriptions and explanations for my educational influences in learning. The paper begins with a background to NEARI and how it came into being. It then offers descriptions and explanations around NEARI meetings, their structure, the importance of short presentations at meetings and why NEARI is a safe space for NEARI participants. The paper concludes with issues and literature about my own educational influence on NEARI as well as some final critical reflection on my work in the network.

The aim of this study is to contribute to a better understanding of the nuances of multimodal communication through which educational designers construct shared meanings and ideas. Educational design is a broad and multi-faceted area. Meaning-making in face-to-face educational design meetings is a complex process but is yet to gain attention as a topic of research. Most educational design projects involve various stakeholders, including professional designers and people who offer distinct expertise according to the needs of the project. Effective communication is imperative in such environments. We need a thorough understanding of how educational designers work together before we theorise their practice and attempt to create prescriptive tools and process models. The analysis of the meaning-making process reported in this paper shows that educational design is accomplished through intricate verbal and non-verbal interaction with various tools, resources, and representations. In particular, the results show how educational designers reconstructed pre-created visual design artefacts through drawing inscriptions over them -- blending digital and non-digital artefacts. In addition, this study shows that gestures are indispensable to the meaning-making process in educational design team meetings. It is important to build a body of knowledge in this area that supports the practice and research in educational design. This paper would be of primary interest to researchers who study the way in which educational design is accomplished. Beyond this, those who work as educational designers or those who work "with" educational designers, might benefit from an awareness of the different interactional tools at their disposal.

Academic conferences are places of situated learning dedicated to the exchange of knowledge. Knowledge is exchanged between colleagues who are looking to enhance their future research by taking part in several formal and informal settings (lectures, discussions and social events). We studied the processes of knowledge sharing and the influence of the use of IT at the International Conference of Information Systems (ICIS2007) held in Montreal. We describe the categories of knowledge content shared at the conference. Two forms of knowledge sharing were analyzed: formal, guided, planned knowledge sharing in lectures or discussions, and informal knowledge exchange during social events. Data were collected from 274 participants at the conference. The intensity of knowledge sharing in the formal settings was higher compared to the informal settings and was perceived as contributing to future research and to the creation of social relationships. In contrast, informal knowledge sharing contributed mainly to job enhancement and to the initiation of meetings. The discussion centers on planning and evaluating conferences in terms of seeking, creating and sustaining knowledge sharing. (Contains 5 tables and 5 figures.)

Many studies have been conducted on the internationalization of higher education. Yet little is known about institutional plans for internationalization. This article presents the results of a study conducted with the American Council on Education's Center for International Initiatives on the types, prevalence, development, implementation, and monitoring of internationalization plans at 31 Association of International Education Administrator institutions. Internationalization plans are found in existence at 71% of the institutions. The article discusses the development of an internationalization plan typology, developed based on analysis of these internationalization plans, and can be used by higher education administrators and scholars in designing and evaluating internationalization plans to address specific institutional needs. Moreover, the study identifies five overarching benefits and functions of internationalization plans: An internationalization plan serves as a (a) roadmap for internationalization, (b) vehicle to develop buy-in, (c) mechanism for explaining the meaning and goals of internationalization, (d) medium for interdisciplinary collaboration, and (e) tool for fund-raising. The papers in this special issue were submitted to all the conferences organized by IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society (TEMS) in a given calendar year. In 2017, IEEE TEMS initiated its flagship conference TEMSCON (held in Silicon Valley), which serves as rebranding from its original International Technology Management Conferences (ITMC). Following that, in 2018, two more conferences were initiated globally, one in Asia known as IEEE TEMS International Symposium on Innovation and Entrepreneurship (ISIE), and one in Europe as IEEE TEMS International Conference on Technology and Entrepreneurship (ICTE). For this special issue, we invited authors attending any of the three aforementioned conferences in 2018 to submit full manuscripts for reviews, and the present special issue with eleven papers is the result of a careful selection following our usual rigid double-blinded peer-review process. This paper examined how teachers' noticing skill affects the social and socio-mathematical norms they construct in the classroom. The study was carried out with four mathematics teachers working at a secondary school in the eastern regions of Turkey. A case study among qualitative research methods was used. The data of the research were collected via videotaped lessons. The data obtained from teachers' classroom practices were evaluated performing descriptive and content analysis. Research findings show that noticing skill positively improves secondary school mathematics teachers' ability to construct social and socio-mathematical norms. In addition, it has been noticed that social norms and socio-mathematical norms are not independent of each other.

Purpose: This paper adds to the understandings of how face-to-face meetings contribute to the network governance and global mobility of United Nations (UN) policy programs on environmental and sustainability education (ESE). Design/Approach/Methods: Data from interviews with 13 international ESE policy leaders were transcribed, coded, and analyzed for key themes related to the research purpose. Findings: The findings indicate that meetings provide an arena for collaboration and influence on UN ESE policy programs, as well as facilitating the impact of the policy programs on UN member country policy. In addition, attending meetings enables the production of network relations that bind ESE policy communities together across distant locations. They are also a venue for the networking labor involved in forging new relationships and facilitating the social learning that supports global policy mobility. Originality/Value: This pilot study enriches understanding of face-to-face meetings as a key vector of policy mobility and a significant factor in the overall network governance of UN organizations and their policy programs. We hope the study contributes to the fields of critical policy studies and ESE, as well as to informing policy actors on how important their participation in meetings can be for the network governance and mobility of UN policy programs.

Describes a graduate course that is a colloquium for discussion of issues, such as literary theory and approaching the job market, common to graduate students in German. Colloquium participants can form strong intellectual communities while learning about how to present their intellectual and pedagogical accomplishments to peers and future employers in the vita, job interview, conference papers, and publications. This paper presents recommendations for faculty mentors interested in conducting a study abroad program in the social sciences. The recommendations discussed in this paper aim to support faculty in pre-departure planning, during the study abroad experience, and after the study abroad experience concludes. The strategies presented in this paper aim to enhance the quality of the study abroad program, while creating an enjoyable, stimulating, and memorable experience for the students and faculty mentor.

Research highlights the many benefits of study abroad in higher education with emerging scholarship on study abroad in K-12 education. This paper focuses on how leading study abroad fosters a collaborative, cosmopolitan-oriented, professional environment for secondary teachers in Washington, D.C. Public Schools (DCPS). Theoretically we apply frameworks related to the development of cosmopolitan capital and the formation of collaborative professional communities. Using a qualitative case study approach, we draw on data from interviews, written materials, observations of pre-departure meetings and training, and post-program survey responses. Analysis illustrates several emergent themes: First, educators with previous international experience tend to seek out globally oriented in-service teacher education experience. Second, the majority of participating teachers report leading study abroad experience as beneficial to them. Third, findings show the importance of forming professional communities among global educators. Together these findings signal the unique benefits of study abroad in teacher education and professional development settings.

This paper explores the engagement of parents with out-of-school children through communitybased participatory action research in a rural community in Nepal. This study addresses the connection gap between local communities and community schools, which has resulted in consequences such as inconsistent attendance among students and low educational expectations among parents. By investigating the processes of formulating an action plan by a parent-led action group and analysing its execution, the research aimed to understand how participatory action research can foster a stronger bond between community schools and parents, thereby enhancing parental involvement in children's education. The study draws on Mezirow's transformative learning theory, incorporating concepts from Habermas's public sphere and Freire's notion of conscientization. It specifically focuses on the action group's monthly meetings held over nine months and the collaborative outcomes that resulted. By emphasising targeted interventions, collaboration and a departure from deficit-focused approaches, the findings propose effective strategies for bridging the gap between community schools and rural communities in Nepal.
