Background: Although numbers of youth with disabilities (YWD) are increasing, this population continues to be poorly represented in psychological and developmental research. There is a demonstrated need to better understand identity development in YWD. Objective: The purpose of this review was to determine the applicability of a contemporary developmental model, positive youth development (PYD), for YWD. PYD describes six "Cs" that contribute to thriving in youth: competence, confidence, connection, character, caring/compassion, and contribution. We explored which "Cs" contribute to identity development in YWD, what appears to be unique, and how PYD could be adapted to better include this population. Method: Through a qualitative metasynthesis, we explored how PYD emerged across the qualitative literature from psychology and related fields for YWD. We coded 18 qualitative articles according to the original definitions of the "Cs" of PYD and tracked emerging constructs across included studies. Results: Findings reveal evidence for four out of six of the original "Cs" in YWD. Two emerging "Cs," coping and constraints, may be unique to this population. Conclusions: PYD may be applicable for YWD, but an expanded version may be more relevant to this group. The addition of newly defined "Cs" could contribute to a better understanding of positive development in YWD and other marginalized populations. Impact and Implications: This study evaluates existing literature on identity in youth with disabilities in a new way by evaluating an existing framework for development in youth, positive youth development (PYD), applied to a new population. Results suggest that in order for PYD to be relevant to "all youth," adaptation is needed based on identified emerging constructs, "Coping" and "Constraints," which may be unique to youth with disabilities (YWD). Modifying PYD to be more inclusive of YWD could have wide-reaching impacts on the fields of education, healthcare, youth programming, rehabilitation psychology, and psychology as a whole. This review explored how currently and/or formerly suicidal men perceived masculinities to contribute to, and/or protect against, their suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors and help-seeking. Nine databases were searched using predefined search terms (e.g., masculin*, man, men, boy, suicid*, qualitative), supplemented by searches of key journals, reference and citation lists, and Google Scholar. Twenty-five English-language articles containing qualitative data were obtained. Studies were conducted in Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Ghana, Ireland, Norway, Pakistan, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. The articles were appraised for quality and thematically synthesized, resulting in three themes. The findings suggest multifaceted roles of masculinities in influencing suicidal ideation, intent, attempts, and help-seeking. Men linked failure to attain socially powerful positions of provision and status to experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Viewing suicide as courageous and decisive, thus adhering to masculine expectations, appeared contributory to suicidal behaviors. Men described potential protective factors against suicidal behaviors, including perceived masculine expectations to protect and provide for their families, a view of suicide as cowardly and therefore un-masculine, and drawing upon "positive" masculine norms to facilitate help-seeking for suicidal ideation and distress. There was, however, substantial evidence of men describing not seeking help for suicidal ideation and distress due to adhering to "traditional" masculine norms. Clinical implications and future research directions for incorporating masculinities into male suicide prevention theory and practice are discussed, emphasizing the importance of further research into the experiences of higher risk groups of men and of men with diverse and intersecting identities. Public Significance Statement: This review of 25 studies found that men who have experienced suicidal ideation, intent, plans, and/or attempts perceived masculinities to have both potentially detrimental and protective influences upon suicidal ideation, intent, behaviors, and help-seeking. The findings illuminate novel and less-explored aspects of masculinities in potentially influencing suicidal experiences and behaviors, suggest how masculinities might intersect with prominent theories of suicide, and provide directions for clinical practice and research. Limited within the current data and important for future research are detailed explorations of the experiences of men holding diverse identity characteristics, including men from unrepresented global regions and groups of men known to be at higher risk of suicide. Purpose: To synthesise qualitative research on individuals diagnosed with (or reportedly showing traits of) borderline pattern personality disorder who underwent dialectical behaviour therapy, aiming to comprehend their perceptions of change processes and the therapy's effects. Method: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple online databases and grey literature sources. Papers were quality appraised using an adapted version of the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme tool. A metaethnographic approach was employed during the synthesis. Results: Eleven studies met criteria for inclusion in the review. The main themes identified through the synthesis process were the impact of DBT, the supportive structure and the 1:1 therapy component. Conclusions: The synthesis uncovered the importance of various processes within DBT that patients perceived as active ingredients for their change. Psychosocial well-being is key to living well after stroke, but often significantly affected by stroke. Existing understandings consider well-being comes from positive mood, social relationships, self-identity and engagement in meaningful activities. However, these understandings are socioculturally located and not necessarily universally applicable. This qualitative metasynthesis examined how people experience well-being after a stroke in Aotearoa New Zealand. This metasynthesis was underpinned by He Awa Whiria (Braided Rivers), a model which prompts researchers to uniquely engage with Māori and non-Māori knowledges. A systematic search identified 18 articles exploring experiences of people with stroke in Aotearoa. Articles were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. We constructed three themes which reflect experiences of well-being: connection within a constellation of relationships, being grounded in one's enduring and evolving identities, and being at-home in the present whilst (re)visioning the future. Well-being is multi-faceted. In Aotearoa, it is inherently collective while also deeply personal. Well-being is collectively achieved through connections with self, others, community and culture, and embedded within personal and collective temporal worlds. These rich understandings of well-being can open up different considerations of how well-being is supported by and within stroke services. Psychosocial well-being is critical for people living with stroke. Well-being should be a priority in rehabilitation, however people with stroke indicate they do no consistently receive psychosocial support. It is clear that well-being has strong cultural elements, and understanding what supports well-being in individuals, whānau (those within wider networks who the person with stroke considers important), and wider cultural groups is important. Purpose: Human movement is essential for health and well-being. Understanding human movement is pivotal in physiotherapy, but also an important element of physiotherapy education. This review identified, critically appraised, and synthesized the available evidence on learning and teaching human movement in physiotherapy as perceived by students, therapists, and instructors. Methods: The databases MEDLINE, CINAHL, ERIC, PsycINFO, MEDIC and FINNA, were searched. The search was conducted in March/April 2020 and updated in March 2022. The systematic review followed the JBI methodology for systematic reviews of qualitative evidence and was conducted in accordance with an a priori protocol. Results: The overall quality of the 17 included studies was scored low on ConQual but dependability and credibility were rated as moderate. Four synthesized findings aggregated from 17 categories and 147 findings described the perceived significance of 1) being present in movement, 2) movement quality, 3) movement transfer, and 4) contextual factors for the learning or teaching of human movement in physiotherapy. Conclusion: The synthesized findings indicate that the perceived significance of contextual factors, movement quality and transfer, and being present in movement should be considered in all learning and teaching of movement in physiotherapy. However, the evidence of the review findings was evaluated as low-level, which should be considered when applying these results to physiotherapy education or practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Several educational activities in nursing schools worldwide have been implemented to promote transcultural nursing and cultural competence. Despite the diversity of their experiences and outcomes, the available evidence has not been systematically reviewed and reinterpreted. This study aimed to review and reinterpret all rigorous qualitative evidence available, providing an opportunity to understand how students learn transcultural nursing and assisting faculties, researchers, managers, and practitioners in designing new interventions to improve transcultural training. Methods: A meta-synthesis was conducted to review and integrate qualitative studies of these phenomena. English, Spanish and Portuguese articles were searched in Pubmed and Scopus databases. Only peer-reviewed journals in which qualitative approaches were used were included. Quality was assessed using the CASP qualitative version checklist. The metasynthesis technique proposed by Noblit and Hare was used to analyse the data. Results: Twenty-nine studies were included in the analysis. Most studies used phenomenological approaches that were conducted in Australia and the United States of America, with international internships being the most popular learning method. The data revealed one central theme, "From learning opportunity to conscious multidimensional change," and six subthemes. The transcultural nursing learning experience is not a simple or linear process. Instead, it appears to be a complex process formed by the interaction between a) self-awareness, b) reflective thinking, c) Cultural Encounters, d) cultural skills, e) Cultural Desire, and f) Cultural Knowledge. Conclusions: Transcultural nursing learning is a multifaceted process that arises from specific learning opportunities. This process is still to evolving. Therefore, specific educational strategies should be implemented to encourage attitudinal change and promote reflective thinking. Men represent 1% of all breast cancer (BC) diagnoses, which means that most treatments and services offered in oncology have been based on women's (biological sex) experiences. However, a comprehensive framework of how breast cancer is experienced by men is lacking. This systematic review and metasynthesis aims to synthesize studies documenting men's breast cancer narratives into an empirically based explanatory framework, as well as to compare experiences across the two sexes. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses methodology, six databases were searched to identify studies on men's breast cancer narratives. The narratives were synthesized and analyzed using an interpretative technique which allows elucidating more refined meanings, explanatory theories, and new concepts. Our final sample included 38 qualitative and mixed-method studies from North America, Europe, Israel, Australia, and New Zealand, comprising 586 participants. The narratives highlighted 14 themes: being identified as a mutation carrier, being in the health care system, bearing the burden of breast cancer, contested masculinity, existential ordeal, illness avoidance behaviors, lack of male breast cancer knowledge, receiving female-focused treatments and services, altered self-image, self in relation to others, source support, stigma of living with a "woman's disease," survivor identity, and symptom and illness appraisal. The proposed Trajectory of Male Breast Cancer framework provides an empirical basis to draw from for service provision and future oncology research (PROSPERO: CRD42022310411). Public Significance Statement: Smit et al.'s (2019) Trajectory of Breast Cancer (TBC) framework was developed to better understand the experience of women living with breast cancer through the trajectory, but male breast cancer has not been considered. The proposed Trajectory of Male Breast Cancer (TMBC) framework is adapted for men living with breast cancer and helps explain how men live with the disease from screening to survivorship. Introduction: Narratives of negative patient experiences expressed in complaints can help health care professionals reflect on their practices. Aims: To synthesise evidence from qualitative primary studies on patients' negative experiences with different health care settings and to obtain a detailed picture of what patients find problematic while receiving health care. Design: Metasynthesis inspired by Sandelowski and Barroso. Methods: A protocol was published in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO). A systematic search was conducted in CINAHL (EBSCOhost), MEDLINE (EBSCOhost), PsycInfo (Ovid) and Scopus, on 20.04.2021. Backward and forward citations of included reports were searched for relevant studies and the search was completed in March 2022. Two researchers independently screened and appraised the included reports. A metasynthesis using reflexive thematic analysis and a metasummary were conducted. Results: Twenty‐four reports were included, and four main themes were extracted from the metasynthesis: (1) problems with access to health care services; (2) failure to acquire information about diagnosis, treatment and the expected patient role; (3) experiencing inappropriate care and bad treatment; (4) problems with trusting health care service providers. Conclusions: Negative patient experiences impact patients' physical and psychological health, leading to suffering and hampering patients from involving themselves in their health care. Relevance to clinical practice: Narratives of negative patient experiences aggregated from the findings provide knowledge about what patients need and expect from health care providers. These narratives can help health care professionals reflect on the way they interact with patients and improve their practice. Health care organisations need to prioritise patient participation. Background: Undergraduate education and training are fundamental in preparing student nurses for working in palliative and end-of-life care. Aim: This article explores the experiences of student nurses in their palliative and end-of-life undergraduate nurse education. Methodology: Sandelowski and Barroso's (2007) framework for undertaking a metasynthesis was used. Initial database searches returned 60 articles of interest. Re-reading the articles in the context of the research question identified 10 studies that met the inclusion criteria. Four key themes emerged. Findings: Student nurses voiced concerns regarding their feelings of unpreparedness, and lack of confidence and knowledge when dealing with the complexities of palliative and end-of-life care. Student nurses called for more training and education in palliative and end-of-life care. Conclusion: Flexible nursing curricula responsive to the needs of student nurses and the changing landscape of healthcare provision, including care to ensure a good death experience, should be prioritised at undergraduate level. Background: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic forced global changes to how nurses practice. Nurse practitioners adjusted their scope, changed how they delivered their service, and worked with limited resources. For some services, patient access was also compromised. Objectives: To synthesize, combine, and present current evidence on the experiences of nurse practitioners working during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data sources: CINAHL, Embase, and MEDLINE electronic databases were used to perform a structured search strategy. Conclusion: During the COVID-19 pandemic, health care services had to leverage their workforce skills to accelerate COVID-19 identification, treatment, and care. Nurse practitioners rapidly found themselves at the forefront and were concerned about infecting others. They also identified the need for support and were able to adapt to the changing environment. Nurse practitioners also recognized the impact on their well-being. Having insight into nurse practitioner's experiences during the pandemic is valuable for future health care workforce planning. Understanding how they coped will help with critical preparedness and response actions to other health care crises. Implications for practice: Having insight into nurse practitioner's experiences during the pandemic is valuable for future health care workforce planning because, as we know, the nurse practitioner workforce is one of the most rapidly growing professions in primary health care. Children, adolescents, and young adults living with sickle cell disease (SCD) often experience an unpredictable and complex disease course. Although there is a growing literature on the lived experience of patients with SCD, qualitative syntheses are lacking. Therefore, a qualitative metasynthesis was conducted to inform care and potential interventions. Noblit and Hare's phases of metaethnographic research were used to guide the synthesis of qualitative data. Data extracted from the identified studies were directly compared through reciprocal translation. The 12 studies that met inclusion criteria for the meta‐synthesis included 177 participants ranging in age from 6 to 35 years old from six different countries. The authors identified three key metaphors: Ubiquitous Intrusion, Coping to Learn: Learning to Cope, and Part of the Whole. The metaphors were elucidated by three essential concepts that underlie the experience of children, adolescents, and young adults living with SCD: (1) recognition of SCD implications, (2) identifying ways to balance responsibilities, and (3) positioning oneself to thrive with SCD. The metaphors and essential concepts support the global theme of "Growing Beyond SCD." The metasynthesis revealed the shared complexity of living with SCD among children, adolescents, and young adults from diverse cultures in which the yearning for a normal life drove learning to adapt and manage SCD with their support network. The key metaphors may be used to guide development of nursing interventions designed to promote self‐acceptance, coping, and adaptation skills among children, adolescents, and young adults that will help them to flourish while managing SCD as a chronic condition. A theory-generating qualitative metasynthesis was used to explore the questions: (a) How do mothers of low socioeconomic status in the United States express their attitudes and beliefs on breastfeeding? (b) How do mothers of low socioeconomic status in the United States describe the types of support received related to breastfeeding? Databases were searched from January 2000 to June 2022. Eleven qualitative studies were evaluated, and six themes were identified. A model was developed illustrating how the themes impact a mother's decision to breastfeed. Positive factors included shared narratives, knowledge of breastfeeding physiology, and social network. However, more negative influences were heard such as opinions passed on from family and friends, lack of teaching and anticipatory guidance, limited support and follow up, and the perception of conflicting messages from health care professionals. There is a growing expectation of physiotherapists to adopt a person-centred approach to their practice. Person-centredness for musculoskeletal physiotherapy, however, remains an under-researched area. A synthesis of the findings from qualitative studies exploring perceptions of person-centredness in musculoskeletal physiotherapy was conducted to inform future clinical practice. ENTREQ and PRISMA guidelines were used to develop a protocol for a qualitative systematic review registered with PROSPERO (registration number: CRD42020170762). Five electronic databases were searched to identify relevant primary studies. Studies were assessed for quality and data extracted. Data were analysed using thematic synthesis. A total of 3250 studies were identified and screened. Nine studies met the inclusion criteria. Four main themes emerged from the data: treating each patient as a unique person, the importance of communication for achieving a therapeutic alliance, necessary physiotherapist traits for person-centredness, and supporting patient empowerment. Empowerment of patients in musculoskeletal physiotherapy contexts might be improved through a more narrative approach to assessment, with clinical bravery recognised as a specific person-centred physiotherapy trait able to facilitate this. Physiotherapists should also consider the meaningfulness of any treatment activities they provide to maximise the person-centredness of their approach. Aim of the Study: There is currently no meta-synthesis focused on the lived experiences of health-care providers during COVID-19. This meta-synthesis adds to evidence-based literature with an in-depth exploration of how health-care providers responded to the COVID-19 crisis. Materials and Methods: The meta-synthesis approach was used for the extraction and synthesis of data. Results: Fifteen qualitative research articles were identified and analyzed; the majority of which were done in China 7 (48%) and Iran 6 (40%). The total sample size was 383, and the majority of the samples were nurses 282 (74%). Three overarching themes identified were "It is my duty," "I am exhausted and about to fall," and "I have overcome it." The subthemes were professional responsibility, challenges faced, the unexpected burden at work, self-coping and reflection, hospital support, government support, and social support. Conclusion: The recommendations for the policy-makers, put forward by the current study are; designing and engineering effective personal protective equipment (lightweight protective suit with long-lasting durable diapers and face masks with a portal for drinking juice or water), rostering minimal working hours, live-in care facilities, exclusion of pregnant and sick health care providers during an epidemic assignment and frequent outbreak training sessions for all department staff. Purpose: Invisible symptoms have a negative impact on people living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), related to the very notion that they are "unseen." It is important to understand the notion of "invisibility" in MS, as invisible symptoms are particularly distressing, and there is a paucity of research focussing on their invisible nature and its specific impact. We aimed to systematically identify, appraise and synthesise qualitative research regarding the notion of "invisibility" in relation to people's lived experience of symptoms of MS. Methods and materials: Articles meeting inclusion criteria were critically appraised and synthesised using a meta-ethnographic approach. Results: 17 articles were identified from six electronic databases. Three third-order themes were presented as a line of argument. "Invisibility" was conceptualised by people with MS as a discrepancy between the internal experience of symptoms and what is observed externally. "Invisibility" of MS symptoms was found to have numerous impacts, including not feeling understood or validated by others, issues around the perceived legitimacy of the illness, and living with needs which are hidden. We found that "invisibility" by its nature offers people a choice of strategies they use to navigate it. This choice introduces a dilemma: disclose the diagnosis to be "seen," or remain "invisible." Conclusions: This review revealed the manner in which people with MS are affected by the invisibility of their symptoms and the various adaptations used to navigate these lived experiences. We highlight the need to improve clinician and public understanding, and to better respond to these experiences. Future research focusing on the exploration of people's experiences of "invisibility" in MS, including the ways in which "invisibility" is managed on a day-to-day basis could raise clinical and public awareness of the impact of "invisibility" and how to provide support for this, thus easing the dilemmas faced by those with MS. Purpose: To systematically review and synthesise the qualitative literature on experiences that challenge self-identity following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Method: Four electronic databases were searched systematically for qualitative research published between 1965 and August 2017, investigating subjective experiences of identity change following TBI. Papers which met the inclusion criteria were evaluated using the Critical Skills Appraisal Programme (CASP) tool and synthesised using guidelines by Thomas and Harden (2008). Results: Of the 1965 papers retrieved, 36 met inclusion and quality criteria. Synthesis resulted in six themes: (1) awareness of change in physical, cognitive, emotional and social functioning; (2) autobiographical memory loss; (3) responses of other people that highlight change; (4) loss of autonomy; (5) comparing old me and new me-loss of valued roles and activities; (6) social rejection and stigma. Conclusions: An in-depth understanding of the experiences that challenge self-identity after TBI can inform rehabilitation to support individuals to negotiate these processes with less distress and more successfully. Background the perceptions and experiences of care home residents and their families are important for understanding and improving the quality of emergency care. Methods we conducted a systematic review and metasynthesis to understand the perceptions and experiences of care home residents and their family members who experienced medical emergencies in a care home setting. The review protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42020167018). We searched five electronic databases, MEDLINE, CINAHL, PubMed, Cochrane Library and PsycINFO, supplemented with internet searches and forward and backward citation tracking from included studies and review articles. Data were synthesised thematically following the Thomas and Harden approach. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme qualitative checklist was used to assess the quality of studies included in this review. Results of the 6,140 references retrieved, 10 studies from four countries (Australia, Canada, UK and USA) were included in the review and metasynthesis. All the included studies were assessed as being of good quality. Through an iterative approach, we developed six analytical themes: (i) infrastructure and process requirements in care homes to prevent and address emergencies; (ii) the decision to transfer to hospital; (iii) experiences of transfer and hospitalisation for older patients; (iv) good communication is vital for desirable outcomes; (v) legal, regulatory and ethical concerns and (vi) trusting relationships enabled residents to feel safe. Conclusions the emergency care experience for care home residents can be enhanced by ensuring resources, staff capacity and processes for high quality care and trusting relationships between staff, patients and relatives, underpinned by good communication and attention to ethical practice. Background: Moral distress has detrimental effects on nurses which impacts the entire healthcare cycle. Described as a crescendo effect, resolved situations of moral distress leave residue on the nurse with three potential outcomes: moral numbing, conscious objection to the situation, and burnout. Objective: This metaethnography strives to achieve a fuller understanding of moral distress by interpreting the body of qualitative work of moral distress in emergency and critical care nurses. Method: This study used the Noblit and Hare's approach of interpretative synthesis. Ten studies met the criteria and were used in this synthesis. Ethical considerations: Ethical issues were minimal since no human subjects were involved. Ethical requirements were respected in all study phases. Results: The synthesis of qualitative research on moral distress resulted in one central theme, "the battle within," and five subthemes. Conclusions: The unique nature of this nursing specialty resulted in a lasting inner conflict for nurses that is consistent with the previously described crescendo effect. Dementia is a serious condition that has become a public health priority worldwide. Reminiscence is the process of recollecting personal memories from the distant past. This metasynthesis aims to present a thorough analysis of available qualitative literature concerning patients' perspectives about reminiscence in dementia care. A search of CINAHL, PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, and ProQuest for qualitative studies published in English between 2005 and 2019 generated 110 studies. Eleven studies were retrieved, assessed for quality using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme tool, and then synthesized according to Noblit and Hare's seven-step approach. Metaphors were arranged in a list and translated into one another. Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review was to address two questions: what is the qualitative evidence for the effects of the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) training, as perceived by adults with mental health difficulties using it? What is the quality of qualitative literature evaluating WRAP? Design/methodology/approach: Five electronic reference databases and the EThOS database for unpublished research were systematically searched, as well as two pertinent journals. Study quality was assessed using Critical Appraisal Skills Programme criteria and results analysed using thematic synthesis. Findings: Of 73 studies, 12 qualitative papers met inclusion criteria and were generally good quality. Analyses demonstrated expected findings, such as increased understanding and active management of mental health in the context of group processes. Results also highlighted that WRAP training promoted acceptance and improved communication with professionals. Peer delivery of WRAP was highly valued, with contrasting perceptions of peers and professionals evident. Some cultural considerations were raised by participants from ethnic minorities. Research limitations/implications: WRAP training participation has positive self-perceived effects beyond those captured by measures of recovery. Broader implications are suggested regarding earlier access to WRAP, professional support and communication between professionals and service users. Recommendations for further research include the relationship between social support and illness self-management and peer-delivered acceptance-based approaches. Multiple time-point qualitative studies could offer insights into WRAP training processes and whether changes are sustained. Originality/value: As the first review of qualitative evidence regarding WRAP training, value is offered both through increased understanding of outcomes and also guidance for future research. BACKGROUND: The purpose of this metasynthesis is to analyze women's lived experiences of giving birth in Ghana during and after the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), when health policy in Ghana was changed to urge women to birth in health services with skilled attendants. METHOD: An interpretive phenomenological framework guided the review of the literature. Three electronic databases were searched as well as reference lists and author searches. Articles that met the screening criteria for inclusion were coded and thematically analyzed, then drawn together to construct the essence of women's experiences of giving birth in Ghana. RESULTS: Seven themes were constructed from the data and these were poor quality health services, maltreatment by midwives, mixed emotions about pregnancy and childbirth, supernatural fears, women wanting safe births with skilled birth attendants, uncertainty about reaching a health facility, and decision-making hierarchy. There were three counter themes and these were women wanting a home birth with a traditional midwife, defiance against dominant decision-makers by some women, and a belief that "not all nurses are bad." CONCLUSION: Ghanaian women have heeded the MDGs and health policy messages to birth with skilled attendants, but in reality, they are not always accessible, available, appropriate, or of high quality. In the health care setting, and especially in cancer patients nearing the end of life, administrators, medical staff, patients, and families face challenges of a social, legal, religious, and cultural nature in the process of care. The present study aimed to perform a metasynthesis of qualitative studies conducted on providing end-of-life care for cancer patients. The present metasynthesis was conducted using Sandelowski and Barroso's method. A literature search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase databases, from the inception to date, and a total of 21 articles were identified as eligible for inclusion in the study. Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) criteria were used for assessing the articles, and data were analyzed by the subject review. Six themes were extracted for end-of-life care including psychological support, palliative support, educational-counseling support, spiritual support, preferential support, and supportive interactions, each comprising a number of categories. The most frequently mentioned categories were high-value care (67%) and adaptive acceptance (57%). The findings of this metasynthesis support the view that nurses are moral agents who are deeply invested in the moral integrity of end-of-life care involving assisted death. The present study showed that providing high-value care and facilitating adaptive acceptance are important constituents of a holistic strategy for providing end-of-life care to cancer patients. The body is central to the experience of aging. In this metasynthesis, the authors located, analyzed, and reconceptualized phenomenological research on how life is experienced within and through the body after 85 years. Sandelowski and Barroso's metasynthesis method was employed. Seven databases were searched for primary phenomenological studies. After systematic screening and quality appraisal, 19 studies were included for review. Analysis was guided by Maurice Merleau-Ponty's existential philosophy of embodiment. Findings were organized using Max van Manen's reflective lifeworld existentials. Four ontological dimensions emerged, namely, being in a body (corporeality), being in time (temporality), being in place (spatiality), and being with others (relationality). Each dimension captures a distinct experiential dimension of this stage of the life course. The results suggest vast heterogeneity in the ontological experience of aging, supporting the view that diversity grows with age. Advances in health care mean that we can now treat diseases that once cut lives short. However, the increase in life expectancy has not been matched by improvements in quality of life. The World Health Organization warns us that all countries should prepare to meet the challenges of an aging population and this is integral to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This may require a shift in attitude toward aging. We aimed to use meta-ethnography to explore the experience of adults living beyond the age of 80. Our conceptual model illuminates the phenomenon of connection in older age and reflects on the paradox of time : ephemeral, yet interminable. Our findings encourage us to reflect on the influence of enlightenment philosophies that underpin the desire for autonomy at all costs. Aim: To describe and explain the process of transition from cure‐focused to comfort‐focused health care as perceived and reported by patients, family members, and healthcare providers. Background: Moving into the last phase of life due to advanced illness constitutes a developmental transition with increased vulnerability for patients and family. Design: Qualitative metasynthesis. Data sources: Medline, CINAHL, and PsycInfo databases searched from inception through March 2016. Primary research reports published from 1990 to 2015, using qualitative designs to report transition experiences of patients, family members, and/or healthcare providers were included. Review methods: Key elements were extracted and organized into matrices. Findings from each report were analysed using qualitative coding. Results: The sample was 56 unique reports from 50 primary studies. Patients and families emphasized the importance of receiving understandable information, emotional support, respect for personhood and control. The critical juncture of 'realizing terminality' preceded a transition to comfort‐focused care. Subsequently, a shift in goals of care emphasizing comfort and quality of life could occur. Continued provision of information, effective support, respect and control promoted 'reframing perceptions' and capacity to embrace a changed identity. Reframing allowed patient and family to find meaning and value in this last phase of life and to embrace the opportunity to prepare for death, nurture relationships, and focus on quality of living. Conclusion: Understanding the developmental process that can be engaged by patients and families at the end of life provides a theoretical basis that can inform choice and timing of interventions to reduce suffering and enhance positive outcomes. The main aim of this article is to explore the experiences and life situations of people living with intestinal stomas. Previous studies indicated the need to investigate the concerns of ostomy patients and how these concerns can affect their quality of life and their approaches to the comprehensive conceptualization of the bodily changes. A qualitative systematic review and metasynthesis design was carried out by using the main scientific databases. Original articles from 2002 to 2015 were selected based on their qualitative methodology. Methodological quality was evaluated using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program. The findings were synthesized using the metasynthesis procedure of Sandelowski. The final number of articles included was 95 and 1,982 participants. Regarding the metasummary, the data generated 191 thematic statements that were organized into eight categories. The aim of this metasynthesis review of published qualitative research was to investigate the lived experience and meaning ascribed to speech-generating devices (SGDs) by people with complex communication needs and their familiar communication partners. Bibliographic databases were searched up to June 2016, and selected articles were assessed for their relevance to the research aim. The metasynthesis included 21 original articles and resulted in the identification of six main themes, each of which was comprised of two or more sub-themes that related to the experience of using SGD: It's an Inefficient Voice, It's Not a Natural Voice, Making the Most of This Voice, It's My Voice, It's More Than a Voice, and Having a Voice: Being Heard. The findings depict how use of an SGD is a complex process of understanding the limitations of the device, acknowledging expectations of society, using strategies to optimize communication, being aware of what an SGD represents, and using the SGD to enable social participation and a sense of empowerment. Objective: Improving end-of-life care for people with neurodegenerative diseases is seen as a clinical priority. In order to do this, it is important to take into account the views expressed by people with these conditions on their experiences of this care. The purpose of this review was to provide a thematic synthesis of the views of adults with neurodegenerative diseases on end-of-life care. Methods: After a systematic search, 13 articles were included and thematic synthesis was used to collate and interpret findings. Results: Four analytical themes were identified; (1) Importance of autonomy and control; (2) Informed decision-making and the role of healthcare professionals; (3) Contextual factors in decision-making; (4) The pitfalls of care. Conclusion: Participants' views were framed by the context of their lives and experience of their illness and these shaped their engagement with end-of-life care. Fall prevention has received a great deal of consideration and funding, however fall rates have not reduced accordingly. Health practitioners are key stakeholders in the process of implementing fall prevention evidence into their clinical assessment and management of older people at risk of falling. Investigating health practitioners' clinical experiences and perceptions has been identified as a means to enhance the translation of knowledge. Four databases were searched for studies exploring health practitioners' perceptions of falls and fall prevention. A metasynthesis of eight qualitative studies was conducted. The findings suggest that health practitioners face substantial barriers in the implementation of fall prevention practices. These include personal, interpersonal, and clinical barriers in addition to limitations of the research evidence. The goal of this metasynthesis study was to employ qualitative research studies to explore the experiences of interpreters working in hospitals or mental healthcare facilities. Using Noblit and Hare's meta-ethnographic strategy, findings from six qualitative articles were reduced to seven main themes: (1) technicalities of interpreting, (2) balancing objectivity versus supporting and identifying with the patient, (3) emotionally charged stories, (4) workplace stress, (5) interpreters' recommendations, (6) coping strategies, and (7) integrating the past with existential growth. Practice recommendations include examining the workplace culture for attitudes that devalue interpreters. To reduce secondary trauma, it is recommended that interpreters become integrated team members with access to supervision and stress management, in order to build coping strategies. Interpreters suggested implementing preparation time and debriefing time, as well as ongoing training and professional development. Purpose: Research indicates that strong social ties can buffer the adverse effects of chronic illness on psychological well-being. Brain tumor typically leads to serious functional impairments that affect relationships and reduce social participation. This metasynthesis aimed to identify, appraise and integrate the findings of qualitative studies that reveal the impact of brain tumor on social networks. Methods: Four major databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library and PsycINFO) were systematically searched from inception to September 2016 for qualitative studies that reported findings on the impact of primary brain tumor on social networks during adulthood. Twenty-one eligible studies were identified and appraised according to the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research. Key findings of these studies were integrated to form superordinate themes. Results: The metasynthesis revealed the core themes of: 1) Life disrupted; 2) Navigating the new reality of life; and 3) Social survivorship versus separation. Conclusions: Multiple changes typically occur across the social trajectory of brain tumor, including a loss of pre-illness networks and the emergence of new ones. Understanding the barriers and facilitators for maintaining social connection may guide interventions for strengthening social networks and enhancing well-being in the context of brain tumor. Aims and objectives: To aggregate, synthesise and interpret qualitative research studies of parents’ experiences of caring for a child with special health‐care needs at home. Background: Advances in the field of medical and nursing science have ensured better survival rates for children with chronic illnesses. Many of these children have significant special health‐care needs. Today parents assume a caregiver role, undertaking tasks previously provided by nurses in hospitals. As the complexity of care delivered by parents continues to develop, synthesised knowledge can provide an evidence base that will support and guide nurses when caring for these families. Design: Metasynthesis. Methods: Based upon a systematic search protocol, a structured literature search, covering the years 2003–2016, was conducted in five electronic databases. Ten studies were included and appraised using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program assessment tool. A metasummary and a metasynthesis were undertaken guided by the metasynthesis methodology as described by Sandelowski and Barroso (Handbook for synthesizing qualitative research. New York, NY: Springer, 2007). Results: The results were interpreted and integrated under the overarching theme “unsung heroes, flying blind,” supported by eight elucidating categories that illustrate aspects of the parents’ life world. Conclusions: The enormous burden of care can weaken the parents’ will to carry on and result in a decreased ability to provide care. This can have an impact on the parents’ health, family functioning and the sick child's potential health outcomes. Nurses are in a unique position to help these families and should be better prepared for the role. Relevance to clinical practice: Knowledge of how parents of children with special health‐care needs experience their daily lives can promote trust in nurses and guide them in their efforts to support families with children living with chronic illness. The aims of this review were to systematically identify, critically appraise and synthesize the results of existing qualitative literature exploring the views and experiences of intimate relationships amongst people with intellectual disabilities. Fourteen peer-reviewed articles were identified through a systematic search of eight databases, reference lists, citations, and relevant journals. The identified articles were appraised for quality, then synthesized using a metaethnography approach. No study met all quality criteria and references to ethical approval were often lacking. Interpretation of the findings suggested three key themes: the meaning of intimate relationships, external constraints and facilitators, and managing external constraints. Though many people with intellectual disabilities desire and benefit from intimate relationships, they experience restrictions that others do not, which can lead to isolation and loneliness. Intimate relationships are not always necessarily linked with sexual behavior; therefore, intimate relationships warrant their own focus in future research, as well as in education and training for people with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers. Within this, a commitment to transparency over research processes is needed, in particular with reference to how ethical approval was obtained, since this has been a shortcoming of research with this focus to date. Understanding the challenges of professionals in addressing child adversity is key to improving the detection, protection, and care of exposed children. We aimed to synthesize findings from qualitative studies of professionals’ lived experience of addressing child adversity. Through a systematic search, we identified eight qualitative studies and synthesized them using metaethnography. We generated three themes, “feeling inadequate,” “fear of making it worse,” and “facing evil,” and one overarching metaphor, “walking children through a minefield.” The professionals felt that they lacked the means necessary to explore child adversity, that they were apprehensive of worsening the child’s situation, and that their work with child adversity induced emotional discomfort. This metasynthesis indicated that the professionals’ efficiency in exploring abuse relied upon their ability to manage emotional and moral distress and complexity. Phenomenography is a qualitative research method based on the assumption that almost any phenomenon will be understood by a group of people in a limited number of ways. Our aim in this article was to identify the different ways work can be understood by healthcare professionals. In a world where the delivery of healthcare is continually changing, a metasynthesis of phenomenographic articles on healthcare professionals’ understandings can provide knowledge about the focus and meaning of work for these individuals today. Our metaethnographic synthesis of 14 selected phenomenographic articles identified five different ways of understanding work, ranging from a limited to an all the more comprehensive view on patients and their needs. This range of understandings reveals problem areas and challenges facing healthcare professionals today. The possibility exists as well that limited understandings of work may be negative consequences of current demands for efficiency and all the more limited healthcare resources. AimThe aim of this metasynthesis was to develop an understanding of the existing theoretical perspectives around nurse prescribing and to identify any gaps in knowledge, which would support further research into the lived experience of the nurse prescriber in the primary care setting.BackgroundNurse prescribing has been the focus of many research studies since its introduction, with many benefits to the patient, the prescriber and service identified; however, there remains variation in the utilisation of the prescribing qualification, particularly in primary care settings. Although a range of quantitative and qualitative studies have been undertaken, which aimed to explore the influences on prescribing, few have used a research methodology that supports the in-depth exploration of the nurse prescriber’s experience.MethodsAn extensive literature search was undertaken in April 2015 (20–24), which included UK and non-UK studies since 1999. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to search for studies in which participants included nurse prescribers who practiced in primary or community care settings. Studies that only used a quantitative methodology and those not available in English were excluded. The literature search yielded 124 papers, with 50 papers remaining after the initial screen of full papers against the inclusion/exclusion criteria. The papers were reviewed and graded for their quality, with a further 13 papers excluded.A three-step qualitative analysis technique of metasynthesis was applied to the remaining 37 papers. Identification of similarities and differences enabled first-order interpretations to be identified, which were grouped into broader themes (second-order interpretations) by identifying concepts that applied to two or more studies. Aims and objectives To interpret the body of qualitative work focusing on compassion fatigue to distil a common understanding that could then be applied to nursing care. Background Complex demands place extraordinary stress on nurses struggling to work in overburdened healthcare systems. The result can be the inability to care well for others, leading to compassion fatigue, burnout and increased numbers leaving the profession. Metasynthesis offers a means of more fully illuminating compassion fatigue and further understanding of practices which might reduce its negative consequences. Design Metasynthesis. Method As a method designed to facilitate knowledge development, metasynthesis allowed for integration of qualitative study findings conducted between 1992-2016 using defined search terms. Six databases were searched for articles published in English. Nine papers met the criteria for review and metasynthesis was conducted using the meta-ethnographic approach detailed by Noblit and Hare. Results Four themes related to compassion fatigue were found by consensus discussion. The themes included: physical ('just plain worn out') and emotional symptoms ('walking on a tightrope'), triggering factors ('an unbearable weight on shoulders' and 'alone in a crowded room'), and measures to overcome/prevent ('who has my back?'). Conclusions Compassion fatigue is a concept of documented relevance to those in nursing and represents a basic inability to nurture others and engenders a temporal component. Synthesis of studies provides evidence of the veracity of the concept for application to clinical practice and research related to nursing care. Relevance to clinical practice Findings provide insight into the clinical milieu needed to prevent compassion fatigue. A theoretical model is presented which can be used to guide future research, as well as the creation of clinical practice policies which might mitigate the development of compassion fatigue and its potential consequences. Prostate cancer ( PCa) can negatively impact on men's sexual, urinary and emotional functioning, affecting quality of life. Most men with PCa are older (≥65 years), married and heterosexual and little is known about the impact on men who are younger, unpartnered or gay. We aimed to synthesise existing qualitative research on these three groups of men. A systematic metasynthesis was undertaken that included data on the unique impacts of PCa on younger (<65 years) ( n = 7 papers), unpartnered ( n = 17 papers) or gay or bisexual men ( n = 11 papers) using a modified meta-ethnographic approach. The three overarching constructs illustrated the magnified disruption to men's biographies, that included: marginalisation, isolation and stigma-relating to men's sense of being 'out of sync'; the burden of emotional and embodied vulnerabilities and the assault on identity-illustrating the multiple threats to men's work, sexual and social identities; shifting into different communities of practice-such as the shift from being part of a sexually active community to celibacy. These findings suggest that PCa can have a particular impact on the quality of life of younger, unpartnered and gay men. Protective isolation is aimed at preventing infection in neutropenic patients, but it is implemented inconsistently across centres and is supported by recommendations with poor evidence. This review and metasynthesis explored the experiences and the psychological implications of protective isolation in patients with haematological malignancies undergoing bone marrow ( BMT) or haematopoietic stem cell transplantation ( HSCT). A systematic search of multiple databases for qualitative studies exploring BMT or HSCT patients' experiences of protective isolation was completed. The metasynthesis followed the meta-aggregative method from the Joanna Briggs Institute, with four procedural steps: (1) comprehensive search, (2) quality appraisal, (3) extraction of relevant findings and (4) synthesis of the identified findings. Twenty-six findings were extracted from 11 articles included in the review. The synthesising process yielded seven categories, aggregated into three synthesised findings: (1) isolation is a source of suffering, (2) isolation can lead to relating with oneself and (3) the person does not close the door to the outside world. This metasynthesis sheds light on patients' suffering from being isolated, and the possibility of overcoming this suffering thanks to relationships that patients have with themselves and with the external world. Objective The objective of this study was to explore Indigenous people’s experiences and perceptions of hospitalisation and acute care. Methods Systematic procedures were used for the literature search covering the period from 2000 to 2016. Final search was conducted in early September 2016. Quality of the selected studies was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program. Data extraction was conducted using the data extraction tool from the Joanna Briggs Institute. A thematic approach to synthesis was taken. Statements were assembled to produce aggregated data of the findings, which were then categorised based on similarity of meaning, and the categories were used to produce comprehensive synthesised findings. Data sources The literature search was conducted in the following databases: Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Google scholar, Medline, Psychology and Behavioural Sciences, and PsycINFO. Manual searches of the International Journal of Indigenous Health, Menzies website and references of reviewed papers were also conducted. Inclusion criteria were qualitative articles, published in English from across the world, in peer-reviewed journals, that investigated acute health care experiences of Indigenous people. Review methods A metasynthesis of qualitative research studies was conducted following Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines. Findings A total of 21 primary studies met the inclusion criteria. Three themes emerged from the metasynthesis: Strangers in a strange land ; Encountering dysfunctional interactions ; and Suffering stereotyping and assumptions . These themes emphasised the importance of meaningful relationships for Indigenous people and highlighted their cultural marginalisation in hospital settings. Conclusion The findings indicate that healthcare experiences of Indigenous patients and their relatives in acute settings can fall well short of their expectations and needs. This metasynthesis surveyed extant literature on deception in the context of dementia and, based on specific inclusion criteria, included 14 articles from 12 research studies. By doing so, the authors accomplished three goals: (a) provided a systematic examination of the literature-to-date on deception in the context of dementia, (b) elucidated the assumptions that have guided this line of inquiry and articulated the way those shape the research findings, and (c) determined directions for future research. In particular, synthesizing across studies allowed the authors to develop a dynamic model comprised of three temporally linear elements—(a) motives, (b) modes, and (c) outcomes that describe how deception emerges communicatively through interaction in the context of dementia. Background Anorexia nervosa in adolescence has been increasingly documented in numerous quantitative and qualitative studies. Qualitative research, which focuses on subjective experience, is a well-established method to deepen our understanding and provide new insights about specific diseases. Objective We conducted a metasynthesis of qualitative studies to explore how anorexia nervosa is experienced by adolescents, their families, and the health professionals who provide care for them and to compare their perspectives. Review methods Five databases (Medline, PsycINFO, CINHAL, EMBASE, SSCI; 1990–2015) were systematically searched for qualitative studies reporting participants’ views about anorexia nervosa. Article quality was assessed with the Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP). We used thematic synthesis to examine and summarize the topics found in the articles selected and develop their central themes. Results We included 30 articles from seven different countries. Two domains of experience were inductively developed from the analysis: (1) constructs and beliefs about etiological theories of anorexia nervosa, and (2) the experience of the disease from the points of view of adolescents, parents, and healthcare providers. Conclusions We found important disparities between the three stakeholders. The adolescents underlined the psychological and emotional aspects of their experience, while the visible state of these patients’ bodies impeded the work of the professionals. These difficulties shed new light on the stakes of treatment of anorexia nervosa in adolescence, which must integrate both its psychological and physical components. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives To report the findings of a metasynthesis review of qualitative studies on patient and provider experiences and perspectives on linkage and retention in HIV care. Design The review is an extraction, aggregation, interpretation and synthesis of qualitative findings based on the Sandelowski and Barroso method. Data sources A search of the literature was conducted in the databases Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health, PubMed and PsycInfo for articles published from 2008 to 2013. Inclusion criteria were qualitative research articles published in English from across the world and in peer-reviewed journals. Literature reviews, conference abstracts and grey literature were excluded from this metasynthesis. Review methods The review consisted of a) comprehensive search, b) study classification, c) abstraction of findings, d) synthesis. Of the 4640 citations screened, 69 articles were included for this metasynthesis. Results 69 unique articles from 44 countries were included. This metasynthesis takes into account the perspectives of at least 2263 HIV-positive participants (740 men, 1008 women, 78 transgender individuals and 437 unspecified sex) and 994 healthcare providers, family members and community members. The most salient barriers and facilitators to HIV linkage and retention in HIV care affirm ecological factors that are mostly beyond individual patients’ control. Triadic streams of influence concurrently affect care engagement that include a person’s psychological state upon diagnosis and their informational challenges (intrapersonal stream); one-on-one interactions with providers and their immediate community (social stream); and life demands, overall quality of care experiences and other structural barriers (cultural-attitudinal stream). Each stream’s influence on HIV care engagement varies at any given point to reflect an individual’s evolving and unique experiences with HIV infection throughout the illness trajectory. Conclusion There is sufficient evidence that detail how to best link and retain patients in HIV care. Themes identified indicate going beyond individual-level factors and towards shifting attention and resources to systems that patients navigate. A large group of individuals suffering from mental illness are parents living with their children. These children are invisible in the health care even though at risk for illhealth. The aim of this metasynthesis was to advance knowledge of how children of parents with mental illness experience their lives, thus contributing to the evidence of this phenomenon. The metasynthesis is following Sandelowski and Barroso's guidelines. Literature searches covering the years 2000 to 2013 resulted in 22 reports which were synthesised into the theme 'navigating in an unpredictable everyday life' and the metaphor compass. Children of parents with mental illness irrespective of age are responsible, loving and worrying children who want to do everything to help and support. Children feel shame when the parent behaves differently, and they conceal their family life being afraid of stigmatisation and bullying. When their parent becomes ill, they distance to protect themselves. The children cope through information, knowledge, frankness and trustful relationships. These children need support from healthcare services because they subjugate own needs in favour of the parental needs, they should be encouraged to talk about their family situation, and especially, young children should to be child-like, playing and seeing friends. Health technology assessment (HTA) agencies increasingly use reviews of qualitative research as evidence for evaluating social, experiential, and ethical aspects of health technologies. We systematically searched three bibliographic databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Social Science Citation Index [SSCI]) using published search filters or “hedges” and our hybrid filter to identify qualitative research studies pertaining to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and early breast cancer. The search filters were compared in terms of sensitivity, specificity, and precision. Our screening by title and abstract revealed that qualitative research constituted only slightly more than 1% of all published research on each health topic. The performance of the published search filters varied greatly across topics and databases. Compared with existing search filters, our hybrid filter demonstrated a consistently high sensitivity across databases and topics, and minimized the resource-intensive process of sifting through false positives. Aim To identify factors that may serve as facilitators and barriers to self-management described by adults living with chronic illness by conducting a qualitative metasynthesis. Background Self-management is an individuals' active management of a chronic illness in collaboration with their family members and clinicians. Design Qualitative metasynthesis. Data sources We analysed studies ( N = 53) published between January 2000-May 2013 that described factors affecting self-management in chronic illness as reported by adults aged over 18 years with chronic illness. Review methods Sandelowsi and Barroso approach to qualitative metasynthesis: literature search; quality appraisal; analysis and synthesis of findings. Results Collectively, article authors reported on sixteen chronic illnesses, most commonly diabetes ( N = 28) and cardiovascular disease ( N = 20). Participants included men and women (mean age = 57, range 18-94) from 20 countries representing diverse races and ethnicities. We identified five categories of factors affecting self-management: Personal/Lifestyle Characteristics; Health Status; Resources; Environmental Characteristics; and Health Care System. Factors may interact to affect self-management and may exist on a continuum of positive (facilitator) to negative (barrier). Conclusion Understanding factors that influence self-management may improve assessment of self-management among adults with chronic illness and may inform interventions tailored to meet individuals' needs and improve health outcomes. Aim: To synthetize elements of research on concept analyses of resilience; and to propose a definition of resilience to NANDA International (NANDA ‐ I) and International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP®). Background: Nursing classifications represent nursing knowledge that is clinically relevant and in continuous development. Introduction: Nursing is considered holistic and there is always the need to consider human responses to health and life processes. Continuously there are new and emerging concepts concerning humans and health that should be considered within the organization and delivery of health care as resilience. Methods: In March 2015, the authors performed a synthesis of the findings of research concept analysis research derived from a systematic literature search of electronic databases (PsycINFO, CINAHL and PubMed). Search terms used in the title were: ‘resilience’ AND ‘analysis’ AND ‘concept’. Papers written in Portuguese or English were included. Findings: A total of 27 papers were identified and eight papers were included. Of these, seven papers used Walker & Avant's () model and one used Rodger's () model. Resilience emerged as a fundamental concept across the lifespan that is closely related to health and well ‐ being. Discussion: Resilience is a phenomenon of interest for nurses. Similar attributes, antecedents, consequents and definitions were synthesized into a new proposal of a definition of resilience. While some diagnoses related to resilience are classified in NANDA ‐ I, the concept is not included in ICNP®. Conclusion and implications for nursing and health policy: The inclusion of the concept into ICNP® and the update in NANDA ‐ I is a contribution for nursing knowledge through education and for clinical practice, as this could promote the effectiveness of interventions in several contexts. Background: Quantitative studies dominate research exploring reasons for substance use and experiences of substance use by people with mental health difficulties. This limits the depth of understanding which can be gained about these experiences.Objectives: In the present article, we synthesized current qualitative research in this area to provide enhanced theoretical knowledge of these experiences.Methods: Following a systematic literature search, we identified 12 studies which explored how people with mental health difficulties experienced using substances, and which met additional inclusion criterion. We used Noblit and Hare's metaethnographic approach to qualitatively synthesize these studies.Results: Synthesis led to the development of two themes; “substance use mediates acceptance and social inclusion” and “substance use provides perceived opportunities for control and power.”Conclusions/Importance: The findings suggest that in the studies reviewed people's motivation for substance use was embedded in social and psychological contexts. It indicated that substance use could provide perceived benefits such as mediating the impact of mental health stigma, enabling the development of alternative identities, increasing their sense of power and providing opportunities for social inclusion. Mental health and substance use workers should therefore aim to develop alternative opportunities for people with co-occurring disorders to gain such benefits, and seek to challenge mental health stigma.
