Submarine geohazards, are exceptional events capable of producing large-volume turbidites that result from catastrophic slope failures and the associated downslope mass transport of enormous quantities of sediment from continental shelves and slopes to the deep sea. We are investigating the effects of italian earthquakes and tsunamis on the sedimentary record of the Ionian Sea, through a multi-proxy analysis of turbidite deposits. A comparison between radiometric dating and historical earthquake catalogs suggests that turbidite emplacement triggered by major earthquakes (i.e. AD 1908, 1693 and 1169) represents over 90% of the deposits during the last millennia (Polonia et al., 2013a; 2013b). Although the average recurrence time of single events is about 500 yrs, age modelling indicates that their occurrence is not periodic, but rather varies between 100 and 700 yrs, with clusters of higher frequency (Polonia et al., 2015). Seismic reflection images show that some turbidite beds are very thick and marked by acoustic transparent homogenite mud layers at their top. Based on a high-resolution study of the most recent of such megabeds, the Homogenite/Augias turbidite (Kastens and Cita, 1981; Cita and Aloisi, 2000; Hieke and Werner, 2000), we show that it was not triggered by the Santorini caldera collapse but by giant turbidity flows triggered by the AD 365 earthquake and tsunami (Polonia et al., 2013b; 2016). Backwash flows and related gravity-driven processes are the primary means of downslope sediment transport, confirming that the HAT is a unique instance of thick deep sea tsunami deposit. An older similar deep sea megaturbidite was deposited about 15,000 years BP, implying a large recurrence time of such extreme sedimentary events in the Mediterranean Sea. Marine sediments may thus be considered as seabed archives of paleo-earthquakes capable of reconstructing seismicity back in time, during several earthquake cycles.

The reconstruction of past ocean temperatures is fundamental to the study of past climate changes, therefore considerable effort has been invested in developing proxies for seawater temperatures. One of the most recent and promising new proxy is carbonate 'clumped isotope' thermometry, in particular because it is based on thermodynamic equilibrium and not on bio- geochemical proxies. Here, we present a new calibration of the 'clumped isotope' thermometer to foraminifera based on seven species of planktic and benthic foraminifera spanning a growth temperature range of 2-28 C. We used a newly developed technique for the measurements of small samples to improve the applicability of this method to paleoceanography. Our data have a comparable precision (0.005-0.013&) and confirm previous calibration studies based on biogenic and inorganic cal- cite. We discuss possible sources of uncertainty such as over-/underestimation of the calcification temperatures, species-spe- cific vital effects, pH variations between the seawater and the vacuole water of the species and possible kinetic effects on the 'clumped isotope' calibration. To validate our calibration study and test the applicability of our measuring technique to paleoclimate and paleoceano- graphic studies we measured the isotope composition of Globigerinoides ruber (white) at high-resolution in a sediment core covering the last 700 years in the Gulf of Taranto (Mediterranean Sea). The results show that it is necessary to average a rel- atively large number of analyses to achieve a consistent temperature signal for the detection of small sea surface temperature changes. Although with the current analytical system, 'clumped isotope' thermometry is only applicable to the analysis of rel- atively large SST changes in marine sediments, further technical improvements may make this a very powerful technique for paleoceanographic studies.

Several geochemical and micropaleontological proxies were studied in a well developed sapropel S5 from a core collected south of Crete to investigate the causes and the mechanisms of its deposition, to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental and paleoceanographical conditions at time of its formation and to detect the roles played by productivity and anoxia. The geochemical proxies are also used to unravel the sediment provenance and therefore to help tracing water circulation patterns and freshwater sources. The multiproxy approach reveals that the sapropel layer has high internal variability and five different depositional phases can be identified, four within the visible sapropel layer. An increase in temperature and the development of a Deep Chlorophyll Maximum characterise the onset of the sapropel (phase 1), with enhanced productivity being favoured by local riverine input, not clearly ascribable to Nile river freshwater discharge, and by the shoaling of the pycnocline/nutricline. Surface water stratification and productivity develop, together with strong seafloor dysoxia/anoxia. Phase 2 is characterised by lower stratification, slightly lower temperature and/or higher seasonal contrast, and still high productivity. Phase 3 records high productivity, high temperature and high stratification, probably more sustained by the Nile input. A sudden partial re-oxygenation takes place at the end of this phase, changing the main features of the sapropel. In the fourth phase, productivity starts to decrease, water stratification seems to be partially broken down and sediment oxygenation increases. A transitional phase (phase 5) occurs between the end of the visible sapropel and the normal pelagic post-sapropel sedimentation, where productivity is still high and oxygenation improves compared to the visible sapropel layer. The massive occurrence of Polysphaeridium zoharyi, cyst of a red tide forming dinoflagellate, also characterises this phase. The geochemical proxies indicate that pre-sapropel and post-sapropel sediments are quite different from each other, and the provenance shifts from a more mixed to a more markedly southern origin of sediments.

A one-dimensional ecosystem numerical model is used to simulate the ecosystem changes that could have occurred in the open ocean areas of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea during the Climatic Optimum interval (9500-6000 B.P., Mercone et al. [Mercone, D., Thomson, J., Croudace, I.W., Siani, G., Pateme, M., Troelstra, S., 2000. Duration of S1, the most recent sapropel in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, as indicated by accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon and geochemical evidence. Paleoceanography 15, 336-347]). In this period the S1 sapropel was deposited. S1 is the most recent sapropel in the succession of organic carbon-rich layers intercalated in normal Neogene sedimentary sequences. Different theories have been invoked in order to explain the deposition of this peculiar layer. Our simulations seem to indicate that the modified thermohaline circulation, supplying oxygen only in the first 500 m of the water column, is responsible for the sapropel deposition when higher productivity is allowed in the euphotic zone. The model shows the importance in this process of bacteria that consume oxygen by decomposing the Particulate Organic Matter (POM) produced in the upper water column. The sinking velocity of POM partially regulates the timescale of the occurrence of anoxia at the bottom and in the whole water column, allowing the relatively rapid onset of sapropel deposition. The Palermo and Augusta urban/industrial areas (Sicily) are examples of contaminated coastal environments with a relatively high influx of unregulated industrial and domestic effluents. Three sediment box-cores were collected offshore of these urban/industrial areas in water depths of 60-150 m during two cruises (summers 2003/2004), dated by (210)Pb and (137)Cs, and analysed for total mercury concentration and total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentration. Benthic foraminiferal assemblages were also examined (in terms of their distribution and morphology) to assess the potential use of benthic foraminifera as bioindicators of pollutant input and environmental change in these Mediterranean shelf environments. The Hg and PAHs vs depth profiles show a clear increase in concentration with decreasing depth. Most of the sediments are highly enriched in mercury and show concentrations more than 20 times the background mercury value estimated for sediments from the Sicily Strait. The Hg and PAH concentrations appear to be potentially hazardous, grossly exceeding national and international regulatory guidelines. A reduction in abundance of benthic foraminifera, increasing percentages of tests with various morphological deformities, and the dominance of opportunistic species in more recent sediments can be correlated to anthropogenic impact.
