This should be considered when prescribing clinical treatments to restore typical gait.\ud Abstract\ud Children who idiopathically toe-walk (ITW) habitually operate at greater plantarflexion angles than typically developing (TD) children, which might result in shorter, sub-optimal, gastrocnemius fascicle lengths. However, currently no experimental evidence exists to substantiate this notion. Five children who ITW and 14 TD children completed a gait analysis, whilst gastrocnemius fascicle behaviour was simultaneously quantified using ultrasound. The moment-angle (hip, knee and ankle) and -length (gastrocnemius) relationships were determined from isometric maximum voluntary contractions (MVC) on an isokinetic dynamometer combined with ultrasound. During gait, children who ITW operated at more plantarflexed angles (Δ = 20°; p = 0.013) and longer muscle fascicle lengths (Δ = 12mm; p = 0.008) than TD children. During MVC, no differences in the peak moment of any joint were found. However, peak plantarflexor moment occurred at significantly more plantarflexed angles (-16 vs. 1°; p = 0.010) and at longer muscle fascicle lengths (44 vs. 37mm; p = 0.001) in children who ITW than TD children. Observed alterations in the moment-angle and -length relationships of children who ITW coincided with the ranges used during gait. Therefore, the gastrocnemius muscle in children who ITW operates close to the peak of the force-length relationship, similarly to TD children. Thus, this study indicates that children who ITW present with substantial alterations in the gastrocnemius muscle functional properties, which appear well adapted to the characteristic demands of equinus gait. The absence of proximal joint weakness also supports the notion that idiopathic toe-walking is truly an ankle joint pathology. These findings should be considered when prescribing clinical treatments to restore typical gait.

Children who idiopathically toe‐walk (ITW) habitually operate at greater plantarflexion angles and thus, at shorter muscle‐tendon unit (MTU) lengths than typically developing (TD) children. Therefore, it is often assumed that habitual use of the gastrocnemius muscle in this way will cause remodelling of the muscle‐tendon architecture compared to TD children. However, the gastrocnemius muscle architecture of children who ITW has never been measured. It is essential that we gain a better understanding of these muscle‐tendon properties, to ensure that appropriate clinical interventions can be provided for these children. Five children who ITW (age 8 ± 2 years) and 14 TD children (age 10 ± 2 years) participated in this study. Ultrasound was combined with isokinetic dynamometry and surface electromyography, to measure muscle architecture at common positions and passive lengthening properties of the gastrocnemius muscle and tendon across full range of motion. Regardless of which common condition groups were compared under, both the absolute and normalised to MTU muscle belly and fascicle lengths were always longer, and the Achilles tendon length was always shorter in children who ITW than TD children (p 0.05); however, passive joint stiffness was greater in children who ITW at maximum dorsiflexion (p = 0.001) and at a joint moment common to all participants (p = 0.029). Consequently, the findings of this pilot study indicate a remodelling of the relative MTU that does not support the concept that children who ITW commonly experience muscle shortening. Therefore, greater consideration of the muscle and tendon properties are required when prescribing clinical interventions that aim to lengthen the MTU, and treatments may be better targeted at the Achilles tendon in children who ITW., We used ultrasound to measure the gastrocnemius medialis muscle architecture in children who idiopathically toe‐walk (ITW). Background High-grade spondylolisthesis (HGS) (Myerding grade III-V) in adolescents can lead to a marked alteration of gait pattern and maybe the presenting symptom in these patients. This characteristic gait pattern in patients with HGS has been referred to as the "pelvic waddle." Modern 3-dimensional (3D) gait analysis serves an important tool to objectively analyze the different components of this characteristic gait preoperatively and postoperatively and is an objective measure of postoperative improvement.This study demonstrates the use of 3D gait analysis preoperatively and postoperatively in a cohort of 4 consecutive patients with HGS treated surgically at a single tertiary referral center and utilize this to objectively evaluate outcome of surgical treatment in these patients. This has not been reported previously in a cohort of patients. Methods This is a prospective analysis of patients with HGS who underwent surgical intervention for spondylolisthesis at a single institution. Patient demographics, clinical, and radiologic assessment were recorded, and all patients underwent 3D gait analysis before and after surgical intervention. Kinetic, kinematic, and spatial parameters were recorded preoperatively and postoperatively for all patients. This allowed the outcome of change in gait deviation index, before and after surgical treatment, to be evaluated. Results We were able to review complete records of 4 adolescent patients who underwent surgical treatment for HGS. Mean age at surgery was 13.5 years with a minimum follow-up of 2.5 years postoperatively (average 40 mo). Preoperative gait analysis revealed marked posterior pelvic tilt in 2 patients, reduced hip and knee extension in all 4 patients and external foot progression in 3 of the 4 patients. Along with an observed improvement in gait, there was an objective improvement in gait parameters postoperatively in all 4 patients. Gait deviation index score improved significantly from 78.9 to 101.3 (mean). Conclusions Preoperative gait abnormalities exist in HGS and can be objectively analyzed with gait analysis. Surgical intervention may successfully resolve these gait abnormalities and gait analysis is a useful tool to assess the outcome of surgery and quantify an otherwise intangible benefit of surgical intervention. Aim: To study the causes of locomotor dysfunction, estimate muscle forces, or understand the influence of altered sarcomere and muscle properties and behaviours on whole body function, it is necessary to examine the leverage with which contractile forces operate. At the ankle joint, current methods to quantify this leverage for the plantarflexors do not account for curvature of the Achilles tendon, and so may not be appropriate when studying equinus gait. Thus, novel methodologies need to be developed and implemented to quantify the Achilles tendon moment arm length during locomotion. Methods: Plantarflexor internal moment arm length and effective mechanical advantage of 11 typically developed young adults were calculated throughout stance, while heel-toe walking and voluntarily toe-walking on an instrumented treadmill. Achilles tendon moment arm was defined in two-ways: (1) assuming a straight tendon, defined between the gastrocnemius medialis myotendinous junction and Achilles tendon insertion point, and (2) accounting for tendon curvature, by tracking the initial path of the Achilles tendon from the calcaneal insertion. Results: When accounting for tendon curvature, Achilles tendon moment arm length and plantarflexor effective mechanical advantage did not differ between walking conditions (p > 0.05). In contrast, when assuming a straight tendon, Achilles tendon moment arm length (p = 0.043) and plantarflexor effective mechanical advantage (p = 0.007) were significantly greater when voluntary toe-walking than heel-toe walking in late stance. Discussion: Assuming a straight Achilles tendon led to a greater Achilles tendon moment arm length and plantarflexor effective mechanical advantage during late stance, compared to accounting for tendon curvature. Consequently, plantarflexor muscle force would appear smaller when assuming a straight tendon. This could lead to erroneous interpretations of muscular function and fascicle force-length-velocity behaviour in vivo, and potentially inappropriate and ineffective clinical interventions for equinus gait. The aim of this study was to evaluate the rate of open reduction and complications of elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) in treating unstable diaphyseal forearm fractures in children. We performed a retrospective review of a consecutive series of 102 paediatric patients with a mean age of 9 years (range: 7-14 years) who underwent ESIN of unstable closed forearm fractures at three different centres. Closed reduction of one or both bones was achieved in 68 (67%) patients and open reduction was required in 34 (33%) patients. The rate of open reduction in single-bone fractures (52.2%) was significantly higher than that in both-bone fractures (27.8%) (P=0.04, Fisher's exact test). All the fractures united within 3 months. There were six refractures following nail removal. Five patients had superficial wound infections. Seven patients developed neuropraxia of the sensory branch of the radial nerve. All resolved spontaneously within 3 months of the surgery. ESIN is an effective technique in treating unstable diaphyseal forearm fractures. The need for open reduction should be decided promptly following failed attempts of closed reduction. Single-bone fractures are more likely to require open reduction than both-bone fractures. The radius should be reduced and stabilized first. If open reduction is required, this should be performed through a volar approach rather than a dorsal one.

Background Flexion deformity of the knee is a common presentation in children with cerebral palsy with hamstring surgery as an option for addressing this. However, concerns with regard to increased pelvic tilt have been raised. The purpose of this study was to compare preoperative and postoperative pelvic tilt after isolated hamstring lengthening versus combined hamstring lengthening and the influence of Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels on pelvic tilt. Methods This retrospective study included 46 ambulatory children with cerebral palsy who had had open medial hamstring lengthening (mean age at surgery, 11 y 11 mo; SD, 2 y 11 mo; GMFCS I, 16; GMFCS II 20; GMFCS III 10). Twelve children underwent isolated surgery and 34 children underwent combined surgery. The isolated hamstring procedures could be combined with foot and/or ankle-level surgery, as only the hamstring procedure would affect the pelvic tilt. Combined surgery was defined as hamstring lengthening with other procedures performed at the knee or more proximally. The preoperative and postoperative 3-dimensional gait analysis data were evaluated in this study. Results Both the isolated and combined hamstring lengthening groups showed no significant change in pelvic tilt ([INCREMENT]1.28, P=0.203; [INCREMENT]1.47, P=0.113, respectively). A significant change in pelvic tilt was seen in children functioning at GMFCS III ([INCREMENT]4.66, P=0.009) but not GMFCS I and II ([INCREMENT]0.37, P=0.718; [INCREMENT]0.48, P=0.697). Significant postoperative decreases in the knee flexion angle at initial contact were seen for both isolated ([INCREMENT]5.72, P=0.010) and combined hamstring lengthening ([INCREMENT]10.95, P Conclusions Hamstring lengthening, for the majority of patients, did not lead to a clinically significant change in mean pelvic tilt and improved knee flexion angle at initial contact. Children who functioned at GMFCS level III had an increase in anterior pelvic tilt and caution should be exercised in this group. Study design Level IV evidence-case series.

Aim: Stretching is often used to increase/maintain muscle length and improve joint range of motion (ROM) in children with cerebral palsy (CP). However, outcomes at the muscle (remodeling) and resulting function appear to be highly variable and often unsatisfactory. During passive joint rotation, the Achilles tendon lengthens more than the in-series medial gastrocnemius muscle in children with CP, which might explain the limited effectiveness of stretching interventions. We aimed to ascertain whether increasing tendon stiffness, by performing resistance training, improves the effectiveness of passive stretching, indicated by an increase in medial gastrocnemius fascicle length. Methods: Sixteen children with CP (Age median [IQR]: 9.6 [8.6, 10.5]) completed the study. Children were randomly assigned to a combined intervention of stretching and strengthening of the calf muscles (n = 9) or a control (stretching-only) group (n = 7). Medial gastrocnemius fascicle length at a resting ankle angle, lengthening during passive joint rotations, and tendon stiffness were assessed by combining dynamometry and ultrasound imaging. The study was registered on clinicaltrials.gov (NCT02766491). Results: Resting fascicle length and tendon stiffness increased more in the intervention group compared to the control group (median [95% CI] increase fascicle length: 2.2 [1.3, 4.3] mm; stiffness: 13.6 [9.9, 17.7] N/mm) Maximum dorsiflexion angle increased equally in both groups. Conclusion: This study provides proof of principle that a combined resistance and stretching intervention can increase tendon stiffness and muscle fascicle length in children with CP. There is little consensus on whether Kirschner wire (K-wire) burial is preferable in the management of paediatric lateral humeral condyle fractures. We identified 124 patients from May 2008 to August 2014. Sixty received buried K-wires and 64 received unburied wires. We found no significant difference in the infection rates between groups, but a high rate of skin erosion (23%) in the buried group, with a subsequent high rate of infection in this subgroup (40%). We found a strong association of wire erosion following early surgery. There is a considerable cost saving associated with using unburied wires. We therefore recommend the routine use of unburied wires.

We investigated the effect of a sliding hip screw versus cancellous screws on the risk of reoperation and other key outcomes. Methods For this international, multicentre, allocation concealed randomised controlled trial, we enrolled patients aged 50 years or older with a low-energy hip fracture requiring fracture fixation from 81 clinical centres in eight countries. Patients were assigned by minimisation with a centralised computer system to receive a single large-diameter screw with a side-plate (sliding hip screw) or the present standard of care, multiple small-diameter cancellous screws. Surgeons and patients were not blinded but the data analyst, while doing the analyses, remained blinded to treatment groups. The primary outcome was hip reoperation within 24 months after initial surgery to promote fracture healing, relieve pain, treat infection, or improve function. Analyses followed the intention-to-treat principle. This study was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT00761813. Findings Between March 3, 2008, and March 31, 2014, we randomly assigned 1108 patients to receive a sliding hip screw (n=557) or cancellous screws (n=551). Reoperations within 24 months did not differ by type of surgical fixation in those included in the primary analysis: 107 (20%) of 542 patients in the sliding hip screw group versus 117 (22%) of 537 patients in the cancellous screws group (hazard ratio [HR] 0·83, 95% CI 0·63–1·09; p=0·18). Avascular necrosis was more common in the sliding hip screw group than in the cancellous screws group (50 patients [9%] vs 28 patients [5%]; HR 1·91, 1·06–3·44; p=0·0319). Background: Due to the need for medical optimization and congested operating room schedules, surgical repair is often performed at night. Studies have shown that work done at night increases complications. The primary aim of our study is to compare the rates of complications and 30-day mortality between 2 surgical times of day, daytime group (DTG, 07:00-15:59) and nighttime group (NTG, 16:00-06:59). Methods: Retrospective chart review from 2005 through 2010. Setting: Level 1 Trauma Center. Participants: 1443 patients with hip fracture, age ≥50 years with isolated injury and surgical treatment of the fracture. Main Outcomes and Measures: Thirty-day mortality and complications: myocardial infarction, cardiac event, stroke, central nervous system event, pneumonia, urinary tract infection, postoperative wound infection, and bleeding requiring transfusion of 3 or more red blood cell units. Results: A total of 859 patients met the inclusion criteria; 668 patients in the DTG and 191 patients in the NTG. The 30-day mortality was 7.8%. The complication rate was 28%. No difference was found in 30-day mortality or complication rate based on the time of day the surgery was performed ( P = 1.0 and P = .92, respectively). This remained unchanged when controlling for health status and surgical complexity. Age (odds ratio = 1.03/year), Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI; odds ratio = 1.21), and American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA; odds ratio = 1.85) score were predictive of adverse outcomes. Conclusion: Surgical time of day did not affect 30-day mortality or total number of complications. Age, ASA score, and CCI were associated with adverse outcomes.

This is a retrospective review of 24 patients with late-onset Perthes disease treated with shelf acetabuloplasty. The mean age of the patients was 9.8 years. The medial joint space ratio improved from 1.66 to 1.47 (P0.05) and the acetabular cover ratio improved from 0.87 to 1.18 (P0.001). At maturity, five hips were Stulberg II, 13 were Stulberg III and six were Stulberg IV. The study suggests that shelf acetabuloplasty favourably affects long-term Stulberg grading and therefore outcome compared with historic nonoperative treatment regimens. We believe that the procedure deserves further evaluation in any future randomized-controlled trial of the management of late-onset Perthes disease.

In 2004, nearly 120 000 fragility fractures of the humerus were reported. As the US population ages, this number is expected to increase. Fractures of the distal humerus can be treated in a closed or open fashion. Open treatment includes open reduction and internal fixation or total elbow arthroplasty. Open reduction and internal fixation typically involves dual plating for increased stability and early mobility. We present a case in which dual plating failed due to lack of screw purchase in osteoporotic bone. This patient’s fracture was then revised with the use of a fibular strut allograft for improved stability and screw purchase. This method of fixation has not previously been described in the distal humerus and may prove useful in open fixation of osteoporotic distal humerus fractures.

Paediatric Monteggia-type injuries are complicated by treatment failure and posterior interosseous nerve palsy, without reliable predictive indicators. Outcome is considered to be good, with little patient-reported evidence. We propose novel radiographic parameters. A total of 33 Monteggia-type injuries were analysed. Posterior interosseous nerve palsy was strongly predicted by the Radial Head Displacement Index. The presence of two or more of three novel instability markers was associated strongly with treatment failure. Patient-reported outcome measures were almost uniformly excellent. We advocate the use of a new, inclusive, stability-based classification of Monteggia-type injuries to predict patients who require accurate internal fixation.

Introduction: The relationship between shoulder function and overall function in the elderly patients is not well understood. It is hypothesized that there is an increased tolerance of shoulder dysfunction in this population. The purpose of our study was to investigate and better understand the relationship between shoulder function, general musculoskeletal health, and frailty in the elderly patients. Materials and Methods: The dominant shoulders of 75 individuals aged ≥65 years without known dominant shoulder pathology were assessed. Demographic data were collected. Functional evaluation was conducted by administering the Constant, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), and the Short Musculoskeletal Function Assessment (SMFA) questionnaires. Shoulder range of motion and strength were measured and the Fried frailty phenotype was calculated. Mean age of the patients was 73.6 years. Sixty-seven percent of the patients were female. Mean body mass index was 31.2 kg/m2. Results: Twenty-eight percent of the patients reported the use of an assistive device for ambulation. As frailty increased among the 3 Fried frailty phenotypes (robust, prefrail, and frail), patients had statistically significant lower mean Constant scores ( P < .0001), ASES scores ( P < .0001), higher overall SMFA scores ( P < .0001), and an increase in the use of assistive device for ambulation. Individuals who reported the use of an assistive device for ambulation had lower Constant and ASES scores ( P < .0001 and P = .045, respectively) and higher overall SMFA scores ( P < .0001). There was no evidence of correlation between body mass index and any of the other measures. Conclusions: Frailty and the use of an assistive device for ambulation correlate with poor shoulder function in patients who do not register shoulder complaints and have no known shoulder pathology. Item does not contain fulltext BACKGROUND: The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) has been extensively evaluated in groups of patients with osteoarthritis, yet not in patients with a femoral neck fracture. This study aimed to determine the reliability, construct validity, and responsiveness of the WOMAC compared with the Short Form-12 (SF-12) and the EuroQol 5D (EQ-5D) questionnaires for the assessment of elderly patients with a femoral neck fracture. METHODS: Reliability was tested by assessing the Cronbach alpha. Construct validity was determined with the Pearson correlation coefficient. Change scores were calculated from ten weeks to twelve months of follow-up. Standardized response means and floor and ceiling effects were determined. Analyses were performed to compare the results for patients less than eighty years old with those for patients eighty years of age or older. RESULTS: The mean WOMAC total score was 89 points before the fracture in the younger patients and increased from 70 points at ten weeks to 81 points at two years postoperatively. In the older age group, these scores were 86, 75, and 78 points. The mean WOMAC pain scores before the fracture and at ten weeks and two years postoperatively were 92, 76, and 87 points, respectively, in the younger age group and 92, 84, and 93 points in the older age group. Function scores were 89, 68, and 79 points for the younger age group and 84, 71, and 73 points for the older age group. The Cronbach alpha for pain, stiffness, function, and the total scale ranged from 0.83 to 0.98 for the younger age group and from 0.79 to 0.97 for the older age group. Construct validity was good, with 82% and 79% of predefined hypotheses confirmed in the younger and older age groups, respectively. Responsiveness was moderate. No floor effects were found. Moderate to large ceiling effects were found for pain and stiffness scales at ten weeks and twelve months in younger patients (18% to 36%) and in the older age group (38% to 53%). CONCLUSIONS: The WOMAC showed good reliability, construct validity, and responsiveness in both age groups of elderly patients with a femoral neck fracture who had been physically and mentally fit before the fracture. The instrument is suitable for use in future clinical studies in these populations. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The results are based on two clinical trials. The questionnaires used concern pure, clinically relevant issues (ability to walk, climb stairs, etc.). Moreover, the results can be used for future research comparing clinical outcomes (or treatments) for populations with a femoral neck fracture.

We undertook a retrospective comparative study of all patients with an unstable slipped capital femoral epiphysis presenting to a single centre between 1998 and 2011. There were 45 patients (46 hips; mean age 12.6 years; 9 to 14); 16 hips underwent intracapsular cuneiform osteotomy and 30 underwent pinning in situ, with varying degrees of serendipitous reduction. No patient in the osteotomy group was lost to follow-up, which was undertaken at a mean of 28 months (11 to 48); four patients in the pinning in situ group were lost to follow-up, which occurred at a mean of 30 months (10 to 50). Avascular necrosis (AVN) occurred in four hips (25%) following osteotomy and in 11 (42%) following pinning in situ. AVN was not seen in five hips for which osteotomy was undertaken > 13 days after presentation. AVN occurred in four of ten (40%) hips undergoing emergency pinning in situ, compared with four of 15 (47%) undergoing non-emergency pinning. The rate of AVN was 67% (four of six) in those undergoing pinning on the second or third day after presentation.Pinning in situ following complete reduction led to AVN in four out of five cases (80%). In comparison, pinning in situ following incomplete reduction led to AVN in 7 of 21 cases (33%). The rate of development of AVN was significantly higher following pinning in situ with complete reduction than following intracapsular osteotomy (p = 0.048). Complete reduction was more frequent in those treated by emergency pinning and was strongly associated with AVN (p = 0.005).Non-emergency intracapsular osteotomy may have a protective effect on the epiphyseal vasculature and should be undertaken with a delay of at least two weeks. The place of emergency pinning in situ in these patients needs to be re-evaluated, possibly in favour of an emergency open procedure or delayed intracapsular osteotomy. Non-emergency pinning in situ should be undertaken after a delay of at least five days, with the greatest risk at two and three days after presentation. Intracapsular osteotomy should be undertaken after a delay of at least 14 days. In our experience, closed epiphyseal reduction is harmful.Cite this article: Bone Joint J 2015;97-B:412–19.

Arthrograms are commonly done in conjunction with an examination under anaesthesia (EUA), before any surgical intervention in Perthes disease. This usually is done as an independent day case procedure in the radiology department. The aim of this study is to confirm that the affected hip meets the prerequisites of a containment procedure. This study was carried out to investigate whether arthrogram findings ever altered the preoperative clinical decision of proposed osteotomy. One hundred and seven cases were reviewed retrospectively. Forty patients were excluded. Decision was not changed in 62 out of 67 hips, after the procedure. Five patients required different management following arthrogram and this was based mainly on EUA findings. EUA under image intensification helps the surgeon to decide the angle of varus osteotomy, required to contain the femoral head in the acetabulum and confirms an adequate range of abduction to undertake the procedure. This quick assessment can be done at the time of surgery under the same anaesthesia without the need for arthrography. Our findings question the role of arthrography as a routine before surgical intervention in Perthes disease and suggest that it may represent an unnecessary cost. We now reserve arthrography for cases of late Perthes disease where valgus osteotomy may be appropriate or for those unusual or questionable cases where clinical findings are inconclusive and therefore the type or appropriateness of treatment is uncertain.

We report a rare case of benign fibrous histiocytoma presenting as an intra-articular tumor in the knee joint causing pain and limitation of movements. This is the first case reported with no attachment to tendinous or ligamentous structures.

A 48-year-old man was treated orthodontically in an attempt to erupt his lower right impacted canine. He wore the fixed appliances for 23 months and the treatment was successful.

We present a case of a Smith-Petersen mould arthroplasty in a 77-year-old man. The implant was inserted by Sir John Charnley himself in 1948. The patient is pain-free and walks without aids. At 56 years, this case represents the longest surviving Smith-Petersen mould arthroplasty with a satisfactory result in the current literature.

The present study attempted to replicate an earlier, unpublished observation of a strong, positive relationship between two indices of schizophrenic thought disorder. Object Classification Test nonabstract (OCT-NA) scores (Payne & Hewlett, 1960). a measure of overinclusive thinking, and Lovibond's (1954) scale had correlated .62 for a sample of 21 young, male. poor-premorbid, schizophrenic inpatients examined by the author. The present sample comprised 41 male inpatients with a diagnosis of schizophrenic reaction. Only patients who had not been first hospitalized nor diagnosed as schizophrenic for more than 5 yr. were included: 26 Ss were rated as poor-premorbids, 15 as goods; 19 obtained paranoid. 22 Ss, non-paranoid subtype diagnoses. Lovibond scores were derived from Part I1 of Rapaport's (1945) Object Sorting Test and scored by Lovibond's (1954) criteria. The nonabsuact scores from the Object Classification Test were derived according to Payne and Hewlett's (1960) specifications. The order of presentation of the two sorting tests was consecutively alternated throughout the sample. Patients were tested by a female examiner. The product-moment correlation of the nonabstract and Lovibond scores was .32 (p < .05). This finding suggests that the two measures of schizophrenic thought disorder are somewhat related but does not support the hypothesis of a strong relationship between the two indices. Comparisons indicate that the nonabstract mean (2.61) and standard deviation (2.99) for the present sample were considerably smaller than the comparable values for the original patient group (M = 6.71; SD = 4.39). Similarly the Lovibond score mean (3.44) and standard deviation (2.84) were less than those obtained originally (M = 6.71; SD = 6.54). Statistical estimations showed that the sample-t* sample differences in rs are probably due to sample differences in score dispersions. Internal analysis did not support an explanation of the differences in score dispersion based on subjects' characreristics. While marked study-to-study variation in means and standard deviations seems to be a general characteristic of nonabstract scores and other measures of overinclusive thinking, the sources of such variation remain open to speculation and further inquiry.
