SIGNIFICANCE Currently 10-15% of couples in reproductive age face infertility issues. More importantly, male factor contributes to 50% of these cases (either alone or in combination with female causes). Amongst various reasons, impaired sperm function is the main cause for male infertility. Furthermore, mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress due to increased ROS production, particularly of mitochondrial origin, are believed to be main contributors. Recent Advances: Mitochondrial dysfunction, particularly due to increased ROS production, has often been linked to impaired sperm function/quality. For decades different methods and approaches have been developed to assess mitochondrial features that might correlate with sperm functionality. This connection is now completely accepted, with mitochondrial functionality assessment used more commonly as a readout of sperm functionality. More recently, mitochondria-targeted compounds are on the frontline for both assessment as well as therapeutic approaches. CRITICAL ISSUES In this review we summarize the current methods for assessing key mitochondrial parameters known to reflect sperm quality as well as therapeutic strategies using mitochondrial-targeted antioxidants aiming to improve sperm function in various situations, particularly after sperm cryopreservation. FUTURE DIRECTIONS Although more systematic research is needed, mitochondrial-targeted compounds definitely represent a promising tool to assess as well as to protect and improve sperm function.

Measurement of muscle strength is fundamental for the management of patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1). Nevertheless, guidance on this topic is somewhat limited due to heterogeneous outcome measures used. This systematic literature review aimed to summarise the most frequent outcome measures to assess muscle strength in patients with DM1. We searched on Pubmed, Web of Science and Embase databases. Observational studies using measures of muscle strength assessment in adult patients with DM1 were included. From a total of 80 included studies, 24 measured cardiac, 45 skeletal and 23 respiratory muscle strength. The most common method and outcome measures used to assess cardiac muscle strength were echocardiography and ejection fraction, for skeletal muscle strength were quantitative muscle test, manual muscle test and maximum isometric torque and medical research council and for respiratory muscle strength were manometry and maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressure. We successfully gathered the more consensual methods and measures to evaluate muscle strength in future clinical studies, particularly to test muscle strength response to treatments in patients with DM1. Future consensus on a set of measures to evaluate muscle strength (core outcome set), is important for these patients.

Chronic neuropathic pain affects 7%-10% of the population. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has shown variable but promising results in its treatment. This study prospectively assessed the long-term effectiveness of DBS in a series of patients with chronic neuropathic pain, correlating clinical results with neuroimaging. Sixteen patients received 5 years' post-surgical follow-up in a single center. Six had phantom limb pain after amputation and 10 had deafferentation pain after traumatic brachial plexus injury. Patient-reported outcome measures were completed before and after surgery, using VAS, UWNPS, BPI and SF-36 scores. Neuroimaging evaluated electrode location and effective volumes of activated tissue (VAT). Two subgroups were created based on the percentage of VAT superimposed upon the ventroposterolateral thalamic nucleus (eVAT), and clinical outcomes were compared. Analgesic effect was assessed at 5 years and compared to preoperative pain, with an improvement on VAS of 76.4% (p=0.0001), on UW-NPS of 35.2% (p=0.3582), on BPI of 65.1% (p=0.0505) and on SF-36 of 5% (p=0.7406). Eight patients with higher eVAT showed improvement on VAS of 67.5% (p=0.0017) while the remaining patients, with lower eVAT, improved by 50.6% (p=0.03607). DBS remained effective in improving chronic neuropathic pain after 5 years. While VPL-targeting contributes to success, analgesia is also obtained by stimulating surrounding posterior ventrobasal thalamic structures and related spinothalamocortical tracts.

Background: Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is defined by the presence of three or more of the following components: inadequate fasting serum glucose levels and elevated waist circumference, hypertension and dyslipidemia, which represent a potential risk for the development and/or worsening of Chronic Kidney Disease. Objective: Based on this, this research aimed to investigate the presence of MetS and its influence on associated factors in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: This is an evaluation of a cross-sectional multicenter research project, carried out with 95 patients with Chronic Kidney Disease, seen at outpatient clinics in the state capital Piaui. Anthropometric, biochemical and hemodynamic parameters were determined. The data were analyzed using the Stata® v.12 software (Statacorp, College Station, Texas, USA), adopting a significance level of p < 0,05. The survey received ethical approval (no. 2.527.329). Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) presents rapid transmission and significant mortality worldwide. It is responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The disease presents diverse clinical symptoms, including fever, cough, dyspnea, and pneumonia. However, other manifestations associated with COVID-19 need to be clarified, leading specialists to an early diagnosis and better prognosis. We describe the spectrum of clinicopathologic COVID-19-related oral lesions that can be the first and/or the unique manifestation of the disease. Fourteen patients with a mean age of 58 years (range: 23 to 88 y) with oral lesions were included. All patients were confirmed to be infected with SARS-CoV-2 by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction testing. Patients demonstrated mild symptoms, including dysgeusia, anosmia, fever, and headache. The lesions were recognized and classified into 2 groups: (1) lesions caused by ischemia and/or hemorrhage and (2) lesions secondary to inflammatory events associated with viral load. The palate was most affected (n=8), followed by the tongue (n=4), and both the lip and palate (n=2). Histologic analysis demonstrated thrombosis of small arteries and capillaries, associated with areas of hemorrhage and chronic inflammatory infiltrate. Immunohistochemistry showed positive staining for spike protein (SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2) and angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 in the surface epithelium, salivary glands, inflammatory cells, and endothelial cells. Although the incidence of oral lesions among patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 appears to be uncommon, these findings suggest that the oral mucosa can also be a target organ for SARS-CoV-2.

Posterior reversible leukoencephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a rare entity among children, characterised by acute neurological symptoms and radiological findings. The role of clinical symptoms and neuroimaging in predicting the prognosis of PRES have not been well-characterised. A retrospective descriptive study of children with PRES, admitted to a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit during a 10-year period, was performed to describe its characteristics, compare the accuracy of computed tomography (CT) scan and MRI on diagnosis and identify prognostic factors on paediatric population. Sixteen cases were identified. Most patients (13; 81%) presented underlying disorders, including malignancies (5; 31%), chronic kidney disease (3; 19%) and post-transplant status (3; 19%). Hypertension (15; 94%) was the most common trigger. All patients had seizures, 9 patients (56%) altered state of consciousness, 8 (50%) headache. CT scan was performed in 15 patients (94%) and MRI in 13 (81%); 1 patient underwent only MRI. MRI allows the identification of new areas of vasogenic oedema and a correct diagnosis of PRES when CT scan was inconclusive. Two patients (13%) remained with neurological sequelae and one died. In two patients (13%) cognitive disorders (specific learning disorder, intellectual disability, motor tic disorder) were diagnosed during follow-up period. Clinical presentation was not statistically associated with outcome. Also, atypical neuroimaging (haemorrhagic and unilateral lesions) were not statistically related with poor neurological or cognitive outcome. However, prospective studies with a larger cohort are needed to establish prognostic factors of PRES in the paediatric population.

BRI2 is a type II transmembrane protein ubiquitously expressed whose physiological function remains poorly understood. Although several recent important advances have substantially impacted on our understanding of BRI2 biology and function, providing valuable information for further studies on BRI2. These findings have contributed to a better understanding of BRI2 biology and the underlying signaling pathways involved. In turn, these might provide novel insights with respect to neurodegeneration processes inherent to BRI2-related pathologies, namely Familial British and Danish dementias, Alzheimer's disease, ITM2B-related retinal dystrophy, and multiple sclerosis. In this review, we provided a state-of-the-art outline of BRI2 biology, both in physiological and pathological conditions, and discuss the proposed molecular underlying mechanisms. Overall, the BRI2 knowledge here reviewed is of extreme importance and may contribute to propose BRI2 and/or BRI2 proteolytic fragments as novel therapeutic targets for neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease.

Deficiency of adenosine deaminase 2 (DADA2) is an autosomal recessive inflammatory vasculopathy characterized by systemic vasculitis, early-onset stroke and livedo racemosa. We report a family cohort of 3 patients with ADA2 compound heterozygous mutation p.[Thr360Ala] and [Gly383Ser]. Two of them had progressive involvement of the peripheral nervous system in the fourth decade, both after stroke. In one patient, clinical and neurophysiological studies showed progression of mononeuritis multiplex to chronic axonal sensorimotor polyneuropathy, nerve biopsy had features of small vessel vasculitic neuropathy, and muscle biopsy disclosed neurogenic atrophy with reinnervation. The second patient presented with progressive sensory symptoms of the lower limbs and chronic axonal sensorimotor polyneuropathy in nerve conduction studies. These two patients had absent plasma ADA2 activity. The third patient had no neurological affection despite low, but not absent, plasma ADA2 activity. Patients were started on a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitor, which has presumed benefits for the vasculitic phenotype of DADA2.

The necessity of new drugs with special attention for the therapy of cancer is increasing each day. Despite their properties, alpha therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals, especially based on the use of radium (223Ra) are good choices, due to the highest and differential cytotoxicity, low adverse effects, and higher bioaccumulation on tumor sites. The use of graphene quantum dots as the carrier for 223Ra is a promising approach since graphene quantum dots has low toxicity, high biocompatibility, and adequate size for tumor penetration. In this study, we developed, characterized, radiolabeled with 223Ra, and evaluated in vitro and in vivo graphene quantum dots radiolabeled with radium (223Ra) for bone cancer. The results showed that 223Ra is incorporated into the graphene quantum dot following the Fajans–Paneth–Hahn Law. The cell viability showed a potent effect on osteosarcoma cells (MG63 and SAOS2) but a lower effect in normal fibroblast cells (hFB), corroborating the preferential targeting. Also, the results showed a more prominent effect on MG63 than SAOS2 cells, corroborating the targeting for more undifferentiated cells. The in vivo results demonstrated a renal excretion, associated with fecal excretion and accumulation in bone. The results corroborate the efficacy of 223RaGQDs and open new perspectives for the use of use 223RaGQDs, in several other diseases.

Evidence indicates that the physiological role of vitamin D goes beyond regulating classical domains of minerals and hormones. It is reported that the low status of Vitamin D may contribute to the occurrence of metabolic disorders, with emphasis on insulin resistance, atherosclerotic events and metabolic syndrome. In this sense, this study aimed to verify the association between metabolic and anthropometric parameters and vitamin D status in patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis. Por outro lado, os fumadores têm também maior risco de vir a apresentar diabetes. É fundamental levar as pessoas com diabetes a não fumar ou se o fizerem a abandonar o hábito. Este grupo deve ser prioritário nos programas de cessação tabágica.

Background Lymphomas in the oral and oropharyngeal regions are relatively uncommon, and their diagnosis is challenging and complex due to the myriad histopathological subtypes. Herein, we report a large series of oral and oropharyngeal lymphomas and compare our data with the currently available literature. Methods All cases diagnosed as lymphomas affecting the oral and oropharyngeal regions were retrospectively retrieved from seven Brazilian institutions. Clinicodemographic data and histopathological features were evaluated and described, while a comprehensive literature review was undertaken in order to compare our findings. Results A total of 304 cases of oral and oropharyngeal lymphomas were obtained, mostly affecting individuals aged 60-69 years (n = 68) with a mean age at diagnosis of 54.2 ± 20.1 years. Males and females were equally affected. Mature B-cell neoplasms (87.2%) were the most common group, followed by mature T- and NK-cell neoplasms (11.2%) and precursor lymphoid neoplasms (1.6%). The most frequent subtypes in each group were diffuse large B-cell lymphomas, not otherwise specified (n = 99), extranodal NK/T-cell lymphomas, nasal type (n = 12), and B-lymphoblastic leukaemia/lymphomas, not otherwise specified (n = 4). The most commonly involved sites were the palate (26.3%), mandible (13%), and maxilla (10.5%). Conclusion Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified, remains the most common subtype of lymphomas in the oral and oropharyngeal region. Older patients are the most affected, with no gender predilection and the palate and jaw are usually affected.

Females from genus Culicoides are responsible for transmitting important pathogenic agents to animals and humans, including bluetongue, Schmallenberg and African horse sickness viruses and filarids. Species identification in laboratory is usually performed by visualization of their wing pattern and/or using other morphological characters. During the National Entomological Surveillance Program for Bluetongue Disease performed in Portugal (2005–2013) several Culicoides midges were captured near domestic ruminants and, more recently, others were collected in a zoo from the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon near sylvatic animals (2018–2019). From a total of 5,364 analysed specimens, some morphological alterations were observed in 154 specimens (2.9 %) from three different Culicoides spp. (Culicoides obsoletus, Culicoides scoticus and Culicoides dewulfi) on palpi (e.g. defective sensorial pits), antennae (e.g. antennae with defective or fused articles), abdomen (e.g. abdomen with aberrant structures) and spermathecae (e.g. specimens with one and four spermathecae). These types of anatomical alterations probably occur due to genetic or morphogenetic malformation. Also, they are compatible with midge survival and thus maintained in adult specimens. The report of different types of anatomical anomalies is important, since these morphological alterations can lead to incorrect species identification during sample analysis. Thus, this work gives essential information concerning some morphological anomalies that can be observed in Culicoides biting midges, being their first reference in C. scoticus and C. dewulfi species.

Background Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is an aggressive B-cell lymphoma with three variants (endemic, sporadic, and immunodeficiency-associated), presenting with specific epidemiological and clinical features. Burkitt lymphoma affects the head and neck region (BLHN) in approximately 10% of cases. The aim of this study was to undertake a comparative analysis of the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical (IHC) features of BLHN diagnosed in patients from Africa, Guatemala, and Brazil. Methods Cases diagnosed as BLHN were collected from the files of six oral pathology laboratory services (Brazil, South Africa, and Guatemala), and one Brazilian pediatric oncology hospital from 1986 to 2020. Clinicopathological and IHC data, and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) status by in situ hybridization data for each case were reviewed and described. Results Of the 52 cases, BLHN was predominant in pediatric patients [43 (82.69%)] and males [43 (82.69%)], with a mean age of 11.26 ± 9.68 years (range, 1-39 years). Neck and cervical lymph nodes [14 (26.92%)], and involvement of both maxilla and mandible [8 (15.38%)], were the most common anatomical sites. Clinically, tumor/swelling [40 (31.25%)], cervical lymphadenopathy [14 (10.94%)], pain [12 (9.38%)], and bone destruction [12 (9.38%)] were frequent findings. All cases showed typical morphological characteristics of BL. IHC profiles included positivity for CD20 [52 (100%)], CD10 [38 (79.17%)], Bcl6 [29 (87.88%)], and c-Myc protein [18 (81.82%)]. EBV was positive in 18 cases (62.07%). The Ki-67 index ranged from 90-100%. Conclusion The clinicopathological and EBV profile of BLHN in South African, Guatemalan and Brazilian patients is similar.

Background Plasma cell neoplasms are characterized by the proliferation of a single clone of plasma cells with production of a monoclonal immunoglobulin. They can manifest as a single lesion (plasmacytoma) or as multiple lesions (multiple myeloma). Methods Paraffin-embedded tissue blocks of patients microscopically diagnosed with plasma cell neoplasms in the jaws were retrieved from five pathology files. Data including clinical, radiographic, microscopic and immunohistochemical findings, treatment employed, and follow-up status were retrieved from the pathology reports. Results Fifty-two cases were retrieved (mean age: 59.4 years) without sex predilection. The mandible was the most affected site (67.3%), usually associated with pain and/or paresthesia (53.8%). Lesions in other bones besides the jaws were reported for 24 patients (46.2%). Radiographically, tumors usually presented as poorly defined osteolytic lesions with unilocular or multilocular images, while microscopy revealed diffuse proliferation of neoplastic plasma cells with nuclear displacement and abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm. Two cases were classified as anaplastic, and amyloid deposits were found in two other cases. Immunohistochemistry was positive for plasma cell markers and negative for CD20 and CD3, and monoclonality for kappa light chain predominated. The overall survival rate after 5-years of follow-up was 26.6%. Conclusion Plasma cell neoplasms are aggressive tumors with a poor prognosis and involvement of the jaws may be the first complaint of the patient. Thus, oral pathologists, head and neck surgeons and dentists should be aware of their clinical, radiographic and microscopic manifestations.

O-Glycosylation changes in misfolded proteins are of particular interest in understanding neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and incidental Lewy body disease (ILBD). This work outlines optimizations of a microwave-assisted nonreductive release to limit glycan degradation and employs this methodology to analyze O-glycosylation on the human striatum and substantia nigra tissue in PD, ILBD, and healthy controls, working alongside well-established reductive release approaches. A total of 70 O-glycans were identified, with ILBD presenting significantly decreased levels of mannose-core (p = 0.017) and glucuronylated structures (p = 0.039) in the striatum and PD presenting an increase in sialylation (p < 0.001) and a decrease in sulfation (p = 0.001). Significant increases in sialylation (p = 0.038) in PD were also observed in the substantia nigra. This is the first study to profile the whole nigrostriatal O-glycome in healthy, PD, and ILBD tissues, outlining disease biomarkers alongside benefits of employing orthogonal techniques for O-glycan analysis.

Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of viral load and lymphocyte count on survival of patients who presented with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated oral Kaposi's sarcoma. Study Design Thirty-one cases (from January 2010 to December 2019) of oral Kaposi's sarcoma in patients with HIV from 2 oral pathology centers in Brazil were reviewed, considering clinical data and correlation of viral load and lymphocyte count with overall survival. Overall survival rates were estimated by a Kaplan-Meier analysis and compared using a log-rank test. The factors introduced stepwise into a Cox proportional hazard model to identify the independent predictors of survival. A P value Results Most of the patients were males (90.3%) with a mean age of 32.4 years (range, 19-58). Hard palate, soft palate, and tongue were the most affected sites. Treatment, viral load >999 copies/mL, CD4+ level ≤200 cells/mm3, CD4+/CD8+ level ≤0.39 cells/mm3, and CD4+ nadir level Conclusions Survival of patients affected by oral HIV-associated Kaposi's sarcoma is influenced by treatment, viral load, CD4+, CD4+/CD8+, and CD4+ nadir count.

BACKGROUND: In patients co-infected with HIV and tuberculosis, antiretroviral therapy options are limited due to drug—drug interactions with rifampicin. A previous phase 2 trial indicated that raltegravir 400 mg twice a day or efavirenz 600 mg once a day might have similar virological efficacy in patients given rifampicin. In this phase 3 trial, we assessed the non-inferiority of raltegravir to efavirenz. METHODS: We did a multicentre, open-label, non-inferiority, randomised, phase 3 trial at six sites in Côte d'Ivoire, Brazil, France, Mozambique, and Vietnam. We included antiretroviral therapy (ART)-naive adults (aged ≥18 years) with confirmed HIV-1 infection and bacteriologically confirmed or clinically diagnosed tuberculosis who had initiated rifampicin-containing tuberculosis treatment within the past 8 weeks. Using computerised random numbers, we randomly assigned participants (1:1; stratified by country) to receive raltegravir 400 mg twice daily or efavirenz 600 mg once daily, both in combination with tenofovir and lamivudine. All rights reserved., Preeclampsia (PE), a pregnancy disorder influenced by oxidative stress and hypoxia, affects the health of the mother and baby and is associated with an increased risk of future hypertension (HT). Aquaporins are a family of water channels, comprising members that also transport glycerol (aquaglyceroporins) and hydrogen peroxide (peroxiporins), key molecules for metabolic homeostasis and redox signaling. Here, we investigated the association of Aquaporin-3 (AQP3; rs2231231), Aquaporin-7 (AQP7; rs2989924), NOS3 (4B/A intron) and CYBA (rs4673) genetic polymorphisms with the development of hypertensive disorders by qPCR/PCR in a cohort of 150 normotensive (NT) women (N = 90) or with previous PE (N = 60) during pregnancy. Prospectively, women were reclassified 2-16 years after pregnancy as NT (N = 98) or hypertensive (N = 48) and the genetic associations were reevaluated. In addition, genetic associations were reevaluated and compared between normotensive and hypertensive (HT) subjects. We found that AQP3 rs2231231, an aquaglyceroporin/peroxiporin, is associated with the development of HT, whereas AQP7, NOS3 and CYBA polymorphism did not correlate with PE or future HT. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ultrasound cycloplasty procedures (UCP) in patients with uncontrolled glaucoma. Prospective longitudinal study with UCP was performed by EyeOP1© probe with 8 s duration on 6 or 8 sectors, according to baseline intraocular pressure (IOP). Complete ophthalmic examination was performed pre- and post-operatively at 1st day, 1st week, 1st, 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th months. UCP was repeated beyond 3rd month if IOP was > 21 mmHg, under maximum therapy, without major complications. Primary outcomes were complete (IOP reduction ≥ 20% or reduction in number of antiglaucomatous drugs and IOP ≥ 5 mmHg without occurrence of major complications) and qualified (IOP reduction ≥ 20% or reduction in number of antiglaucomatous drugs and IOP ≥ 5 mmHg) surgical success rates at 12 months. Secondary outcomes were mean IOP reduction, mean number of drugs reduction, rates of failure, number of repeated procedures, mean time to failure and occurrence of complications. Fourteen eyes of 13 patients (11 male) with advanced glaucoma (Hoddap classification) were included. Six were surgically naive. Mean age was 68.29 ± 10.66 years. Four eyes were treated in 8 sectors (28.5%). Patients were followed for 12 months after first UCP procedure. Overall surgical success was achieved in 92.9% at 6 months and in 100% of cases at 12 months. Background: Dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder, which much of heritability remains unexplained. At the clinical level, one of the most common physiological alterations is the slowing of oscillatory brain activity, measurable by electroencephalography (EEG). Relative power (RP) at the conventional frequency bands (i.e., delta, theta, alpha, beta-1, and beta-2) can be considered as AD endophenotypes. Objective: The aim of this work is to analyze the association between sixteen genes previously related with AD: APOE, PICALM, CLU, BCHE, CETP, CR1, SLC6A3, GRIN2 β, SORL1, TOMM40, GSK3 β, UNC5C, OPRD1, NAV2, HOMER2, and IL1RAP, and the slowing of the brain activity, assessed by means of RP at the aforementioned frequency bands. Methods: An Iberian cohort of 45 elderly controls, 45 individuals with mild cognitive impairment, and 109 AD patients in the three stages of the disease was considered. Genomic information and brain activity of each subject were analyzed. Results: The slowing of brain activity was observed in carriers of risk alleles in IL1RAP (rs10212109, rs9823517, rs4687150), UNC5C (rs17024131), and NAV2 (rs1425227, rs862785) genes, regardless of the disease status and situation towards the strongest risk factors: age, sex, and APOE ɛ4 presence. Conclusion: Endophenotypes reduce the complexity of the general phenotype and genetic variants with a major effect on those specific traits may be then identified. The found associations in this work are novel and may contribute to the comprehension of AD pathogenesis, each with a different biological role, and influencing multiple factors involved in brain physiology.

Chronic heel pain is a challenging diagnosis and although it is a common and disabling condition frequently mistreated. Baxter Nerve (BN) entrapment is responsible for 20% of heel pain and can be managed by an ultrasound guide nerve block, a simple, safe, and durable technique. A 67-year-old woman complained of paraesthesia on the left heel and a “stepping on glass” feeling. Various techniques were performed to manage her symptoms without any results. An ultrasound BN block was finally performed with an instant relief and satisfactory pain control for the follow-up period of six months. This clinical report highlights the success of the ultrasound BN block as an effective and lasting solution for chronic heel pain.

COVID-19 is a highly contagious disease that can cause severe pneumonia. Patients with pneumonia undergo chest X-rays (XR) to assess infiltrates that identify the infection. However, the radiographic characteristics of COVID-19 are similar to the other acute respiratory syndromes, hindering the imaging diagnosis. In this work, we proposed identifying quantitative/radiomic biomarkers for COVID-19 to support XR assessment of acute respiratory diseases. This retrospective study used different cohorts of 227 patients diagnosed with pneumonia; 49 of them had COVID-19. Automatically segmented images were characterized by 558 quantitative features, including gray-level histogram and matrices of co-occurrence, run-length, size zone, dependence, and neighboring gray-tone difference. Higher-order features were also calculated after applying square and wavelet transforms. Mann–Whitney U test assessed the diagnostic performance of the features, and the log-rank test assessed the prognostic value to predict Kaplan–Meier curves of overall and deterioration-free survival. Statistical analysis identified 51 independently validated radiomic features associated with COVID-19. Background Many strategies have been developed to lower the high complication rate associated with a full abdominoplasty. The dissection technique may have a role to achieve this goal. Objectives The present study compared 2 different dissection techniques to perform a full abdominoplasty with Scarpa fascia preservation: avulsion technique and electrodissection. Methods A retrospective observational cohort study was performed in 2 health institutions from January 2005 to January 2019. A total of 251 patients were involved: 122 patients submitted to abdominoplasty employing the avulsion technique (Group A) and 129 with diathermocoagulation (coagulation mode) (Group B). The latter was further divided into group B1 (57 patients with device settings according to surgeon’s preferences) and B2 (72 patients with a specific regulation aiming at minimal tissue damage). Several variables were analyzed: population characteristics, time of hospital stay, time to drain removal, total and daily drain output, emergency department visits, readmission, reoperation, and local and systemic complications. Results The general characteristics of both groups did not statistically significantly differ except for previous abdominal surgery. The diathermocoagulation group had a significantly lower length of hospital stay and time to drain removal. Moreover, these advantages were maximized when electrocautery was conducted with a specific low-voltage setting as significant differences were found. The other outcomes were identical. Conclusions Limiting the extension of electrodissection with the avulsion technique did not present any advantage. Utilizing diathermocoagulation (coagulation mode) during a full abdominoplasty with Scarpa fascia preservation, especially when it is aimed at minimal tissue damage, reduces patients’ time with drains. We present a case of a 26-year-old male with known mixed germ cell tumor which exhibited new and progressive secondary lesions during imaging surveillance, later to be histologically characterized as teratomas.

Alem da componente fisica, a Acne possui consequencias psicologicas que podem afetar a qualidade de vida do paciente, a sua autoimagem e a sua autoestima. O presente estudo procurou identificar as caracteristicas e o impacto psicologico associado a vivencia subjetiva de ter Acne por parte de uma amostra composta por 1.666 sujeitos de nacionalidade portuguesa, com idade compreendida entre os 17 e os 49 anos, tendo-se dividido a amostra em tres grupos: sujeitos sem Acne, sujeitos que tiveram Acne, e sujeitos com Acne. Aplicou-se um protocolo constituido por instrumentos para medir a qualidade de vida, a ansiedade, depressao e o stresse, as estrategias de coping , a alexitimia, e as crencas e comportamentos a volta da Acne. Com base nos resultados deste estudo, poder-se-a deduzir que a qualidade de vida parece nao sofrer qualquer impacto com a Acne ligeira. Sofre apenas um pequeno impacto com a Acne quando esta e percecionada como moderada ou grave. As crencas sobre a Acne sao genericamente coincidentes com as crencas veiculadas pelos dermatologistas, o que indicia que os sujeitos da amostra estao bem esclarecidos sobre a Acne. A maioria dos sujeitos e nao alexitimico, ou seja, nao revela qualquer problema relacionado com a identificacao, descricao e expressao dos sentimentos, emocoes e sensacoes corporais. Apesar de nao haver relacao estatisticamente significativa entre indicadores de depressao e a ansiedade e a Acne, essa relacao existe com o stresse, sendo a resposta ao mesmo atraves de estrategias de coping dominantemente adaptativas.

Enquadramento: a Trombose Venosa Profunda (TVP) carateriza-se pela formação de um coágulo numa veia profunda e pela sua obstrução. As intervenções cirúrgicas são um fator de risco para o desenvolvimento de TVP, tornando-se a intervenção de Enfermagem importante na prevenção desta condição e, por inerência, na diminuição da morbilidade e mortalidade. Objetivo: identificar intervenções de Enfermagem que visam a prevenção de TVP no pós-operatório. Metodologia: revisão Integrativa da Literatura orientada pela questão de investigação: “Qual a intervenção do Enfermeiro na prevenção da TVP em pessoas adultas e idosas, no período pós-operatório?”. Após a definição dos critérios de inclusão e exclusão, a pesquisa dos artigos realizou-se nas bases de dados Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde, Pubmed e B-on. Resultados: a seleção totalizou 5 artigos cujos resultados englobam 5 áreas de intervenção em enfermagem: educação para a saúde, promoção precoce da autonomia, potenciamento do retorno venoso, promoção da evolução dietética e profilaxia farmacológica anti-trombótica. Conclusão: o Enfermeiro intervém na prevenção de TVP através da realização de ensinos sobre mobilização precoce, de exercícios respiratórios profundos e de estimulação da tosse, de massagem dos membros inferiores, da aplicação de meias de compressão e da administração de terapia anti trombótica.

Awareness of the physiological changes that occur when animals are subjected to climatic changes that are considered stressful is essential to maintain animal welfare and to be able to exploit their reproductive potential efficiently and rationally. The present study was carried out to evaluate climatic variables’ influence on physiological parameters, and Murrah buffalo ejaculates reared in a humid tropical climate in the Amazon. The purpose of this study was to compare outcomes between patients submitted to pedicled transverse rectus abdominis musculocutaneous (pTRAM) and latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous (LD) flaps for breast reconstructions and to investigate potential risk factors for complications in autologous reconstruction. A retrospective review of delayed autologous breast reconstructions by five surgeons in a single centre was performed. Between 2014 and 2018, 215 women underwent unilateral breast reconstruction with pTRAM or LD flaps. Patient demographics were analyzed including age, body mass index (BMI), smoking, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Patient medical records were reviewed for the length of hospital stay (LOS), volume and duration of breast drainage, volume and duration of donor area drainage, major immediate complications, early and late complications, reinterventions, readmittances and reinterventions for late complications. LD reconstruction was associated with longer length of stay, duration of breast and donor area drainage and a higher prevalence of seroma in the donor area (37.8% vs 6.5%). pTRAM breast reconstruction had higher rates of pulmonary embolism and late complications. Age over 60 was a risk factor for immediate major complications. Smoking was associated with increased early complications. Late complications increased when the BMI was above 30. Autologous breast reconstruction with pTRAM and LD flaps is safe and offers a long-standing pleasant aesthetic shape. The results of this study show that age over 60, BMI > 30 and smoking increase the complications rate. These patients should be informed about their higher profile risks before proceeding with the reconstruction. Level III, risk/prognostic study.

Background Artemisinin derivatives are the leading class of antimalarial drugs due to their rapid onset of action and rapid clearance of circulating parasites. The parasite clearance half-life measures the rate of loss of parasites from blood after treatment, and this is currently used to assess antimalarial activity of novel agents and to monitor resistance. However, a number of recent studies have challenged the use of parasite clearance to measure drug activity, arguing that many circulating parasites may be nonviable. Methods Plasmodium falciparum–infected subjects (n = 10) in a malaria volunteer infection study were administered a single dose of artesunate (2 mg/kg). Circulating parasite concentration was assessed by means of quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Parasite viability after artesunate administration was estimated by mathematical modeling of the ex vivo growth of parasites collected from subjects. Background/aim p16 and PTEN are tumor suppressor genes. Loss of these molecules in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has been studied worldwide. In this study, we explored whether p16 cooperates with inactive PTEN during the pathogenesis of OSCC, especially in regard to tumor aggressiveness and proliferation. Materials and methods Immunocytochemistry and western blot analysis were used to examine the levels of p16 and PTEN. Sequencing analysis was performed to identify mutations in the PTEN gene and HPV infection. Fluorescence in situ hybridization was used to examine the presence of the PTEN locus. Results PTEN analysis showed high positivity in T4 samples. HPV-positive tumors correlated with tabagism, tumor size 3 and 4, disease stages 3 and 4, presence of lymph node metastasis (N1) and poor differentiation. Immunoexpression of p16 was strongly correlated with the presence of HPV. Conclusion PTEN demonstrated a higher reactivity in advanced disease stages and p16 was strongly associated with HPV. Viral presence decreases tumor aggressiveness. Patients with advanced stage lesions demonstrated lower survival rate.

Resumo Fundamento: Selecionar a estratégia de tratamento ideal para a revascularização coronária é um desafio. Um desfecho crucial a ser considerado no momento dessa escolha é a necessidade de refazer a revascularização, uma vez que ela se torna muito mais frequente após a intervenção coronária percutânea (ICP) do que após a cirurgia de revascularização do miocárdio (CRM). Objetivo: Pretende-se, com este estudo, trazer reflexões acerca das preferências dos pacientes pelas estratégias de revascularização sob a perspectiva de pacientes que tiveram que refazer a revascularização. Métodos: Selecionamos uma amostra de pacientes que haviam sido submetidos à ICP e hospitalizados para refazer a revascularização coronária e elicitamos suas preferências por nova ICP ou CRM. Morte perioperatória, mortalidade a longo prazo, infarto do miocárdio e repetir a revascularização foram utilizados para a construção de cenários a partir da descrição de tratamentos hipotéticos que foram rotulados como ICP ou CRM. A ICP era sempre apresentada como a opção com menor incidência de morte perioperatória e maior necessidade de se refazer o procedimento. Early diagnosis of lung cancer via computed tomography can significantly reduce the morbidity and mortality rates associated with the pathology. However, searching lung nodules is a high complexity task, which affects the success of screening programs. Whilst computer-aided detection systems can be used as second observers, they may bias radiologists and introduce significant time overheads. With this in mind, this study assesses the potential of using gaze information for integrating automatic detection systems in the clinical practice. For that purpose, 4 radiologists were asked to annotate 20 scans from a public dataset while being monitored by an eye tracker device, and an automatic lung nodule detection system was developed. Our results show that radiologists follow a similar search routine and tend to have lower fixation periods in regions where finding errors occur. The overall detection sensitivity of the specialists was $\mathbf {0.67\pm 0.07}$ , whereas the system achieved 0.69. Combining the annotations of one radiologist with the automatic system significantly improves the detection performance to similar levels of two annotators. Filtering automatic detection candidates only for low fixation regions still significantly improves the detection sensitivity without increasing the number of false-positives.

Objective Advances in multimodality treatment paralleled increasing numbers of complex pancreatic procedures with major vascular resections. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the current outcomes of arterial resection (AR) in pancreatic surgery. Methods A systematic literature search was carried out from January 2011 until January 2020. MOOSE guidelines were followed. Predefined outcomes were morbidity, pancreatic fistula, postoperative bleeding and delayed gastric emptying, reoperation rate, mortality, hospital stay, R0 resection rate, and lymph node positivity. Duration of surgery, blood loss, and survival were also analyzed. Results Eight hundred and forty-one AR patients were identified in a cohort of 7111 patients. Morbidity and mortality rates in these patients were 66.8% and 5.3%, respectively. Seven studies (579 AR patients) were included in the meta-analysis. Overall morbidity (48% vs 39%, p = 0.1) and mortality (3.2% vs 1.5%, p = 0.27) were not significantly different in the groups with or without AR. R0 was less frequent in the AR group, both in patients without (69% vs 89%, p p p = 0.037). Conclusions Arterial resections increase the complexity of pancreatic surgery, as demonstrated by relevant morbidity and mortality rates. Careful patient selection and multidisciplinary planning remain important.

Pharmacovigilance is defined by the World Health Organization as the science and practice related to the detection, assessment, understanding and prevention of adverse drug reactions (ADRs). In a well-functioning pharmacovigilance system, information on possible ADRs is collected from patients, health professionals and marketing authorisation holders. Of all data sources for drug safety monitoring, spontaneous reporting systems provide the highest volume of information at the lowest maintenance cost and have proven their value in the early detection of product-related safety issues. At the beginning of 2018, the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (Agencia Nacional de Vigilância Sanitaria—Anvisa) decided to replace the national electronic reporting system in Brazil (Notivisa) with the system provided by Uppsala Monitoring Centre (VigiFlow) for ADR reporting. This paper describes that process and reports on the progress made by Anvisa in terms of making Brazil compliant with international pharmacovigilance standards as well as significantly increasing the number of individual case safety reports collected.

Stress is one of the most common problems that is faced by a majority of the students. Long-term stress can lead to serious health problems, for example, depression, heart disease, anxiety, and sleep disorder. This paper proposes an efficient stress level detection framework to detect the stress in students using Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. The framework classifies stress into three levels; low stress, medium stress and high stress. In this experiment, EEG data is collected from six subjects by placing two electrodes in the prefrontal region. During each trial, the subject solves arithmetic questions under some time pressure. The EEG data is collected while the subject solves the question. The collected data is pre-processed using a band-pass filter to remove artefacts and appropriate features are extracted through the wavelet packet transform and PyEEG module. ReliefF feature selection method is used to select the best features for classification. The selected feature set is classified into three categories using Gaussian Classification. The proposed framework effectively classifies the level of stress with an accuracy of 94%.

Global infertility prevalence has been increasing in recent decades, mainly due to advanced reproductive age. Concerned women look for dietary supplements with antioxidant properties advertised as a natural way to increase fertility. Curcumin (CUR) is a polyphenol with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. CUR elicits apoptotic cell death as evidenced in some tumor cells. In this work, the effect of CUR on granulosa cells (GC) was studied. GC surround the oocyte, providing nutrient exchange and hormone production, necessary for its development. COV434 cell line and primary human granulosa cells (hGC) cultures from patients undergoing Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) were used. GC were treated with CUR (0.001-50 μM) at different times (24-72 h). Low concentrations of CUR showed an increase on cell viability. Likewise, it leads to a decrease in ROS/RNS formation after stress induction, suggesting a protective role. Changes in hormonal levels were not observed. In contrast, high concentrations of CUR triggered a reduction on cell viability and a programmed cell death mechanism. Allied to the above results, high doses of CUR affected hormonal function of GCs. Our work reinforces the benefits of dietary supplements, namely CUR, on the main functions of GC and, consequently, on reproductive success.

Rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic disease, affects from 0.5% to 1% of the world population. The main consequences include loss of joint functionality and severe pain, with lost in life quality and increased risk of morbidity and mortality. The main strategy for RA treatment relies in early diagnosis as targeted therapy. In this regard, the development and application of designed/engineered nanoparticles may represent an innovative approach and the key to success, since is a personalized nanodrug. Thus, we have synthetized, characterized, and in vivo evaluated a tri-loaded monoclonal antibody nanoparticle. For the production we used a mix of monoclonal antibodies: adalimumab, rituximab and trastuzumab to surround all RA metabolic pathways. The characterization included atomic force microscopy, dynamic light scattering analysis and entrapment efficacy using BCA analysis. The in vivo evaluation was done in mice. At this stage we used animals to assess the pharmacokinetics, the tissue distribution as the proof of concept (therapeutic efficacy) of the nanoparticles developed in inducted animals with rheumatoid arthritis. The interpretation of our results revealed that a spherical shaped nanoparticle has been produced with a mean size of 229.7 nm, and a polydispersity index of 0.191. This data has been corroborated by DLS and AFM analysis. The pre-clinical (in vivo) evaluation demonstrated a low elimination rate of 2,34 L/hour, with a purge of 0,42 h. The therapeutic efficacy showed that the nanoparticles have an increased therapeutic effect than the conventional drug with a reduction in all main parameters including the interleukins.

The objective was to evaluate the available published data on sinonasal melanoma and analyse its clinical features, treatment modalities, and prognostic factors. An electronic search was undertaken in March 2018 in multiple databases. Eligibility criteria included publications with sufficient clinical, histological, and immunohistochemical information to confirm the diagnosis. Seventy-three publications (439 cases) were included. The lesion was more prevalent in females than in males. There was a higher prevalence in the seventh and eighth decades of life. The lesions mainly presented as epistaxis and commonly involved the nasal cavity. Age (>67.6 years; P=0.0012), primary location (middle turbinate; P=0.0112), disease stage (advanced disease stage; P=0.0026), treatment (radiotherapy; P=0.0111), recurrence (recurrence presented; P=0.0137), and distant metastasis (distant metastasis presented; P=0.0011) were independently associated with a lower survival rate. Recurrence was significantly correlated with age (>67.6 years; P=0.0021), sex (males tended to present a higher recurrence rate than females; P=0.0051), disease stage (stages III and IV presented a higher recurrence rate than stages I and II; P=0.0331), and histological type (amelanotic lesions presented a higher index of recurrence than melanotic lesions; P=0.0095). In conclusion, sinonasal melanoma is a neoplasm with a poor prognosis, presenting a 30.69% possibility of survival after 5 years.

Antimalarial drugs are vital for treating malaria and controlling transmission. Measuring drug efficacy in the field requires large clinical trials and thus we have identified proxy measures of drug efficacy such as the parasite clearance curve. This is often assumed to measure the rate of drug activity against parasites and is used to predict optimal treatment regimens required to completely clear a blood-stage infection. We discuss evidence that the clearance curve is not measuring the rate of drug killing. This has major implications for how we assess optimal treatment regimens, as well as how we prioritise new drugs in the drug development pipeline.

Background The aim of this study was to integrate the available data published on radiation-induced sarcoma of the oral cavity into an analysis of its clinical features, treatment modalities and prognostic factors. Methods An electronic search was undertaken in September 2019. The eligibility criteria included publications that had enough clinical and histological information to confirm the diagnosis. Results Forty-two publications with 122 radiation-induced sarcoma of the oral cavities (RISOCs) were included. The mean latency period was 114 months and mean radiation total dose was 62.5 Gy. The tumors were more prevalent in males between 50 and 60 years old and the mandible was the most affected site. Osteosarcoma was the most prevalent histological type and patients were mostly treated with radical surgery. Conclusions RISOC showed a poor survival rate of 15.1% in 5-year follow-up. Gender and histological type were independently associated with survival.

The aim of this study was to integrate the available data published on Liposarcomas (LPSs) of the oral cavity into an analysis of its clinical features, treatment modalities, and prognostic factors. An electronic search was undertaken in January 2019. The eligibility criteria included publications that had enough clinical and histological information to confirm the diagnosis. Forty-five publications (104 LPSs) were included. The lesion was more prevalent in males from the fifth to seventh decades of life. Treatment (P = .03) and distant metastasis (P = .0001) were independently associated with survival. A lower possibility of recurrence was statistically associated with age (younger patients) (P = .03), tumor size (smaller than 2.8 cm) (P = .001), and treatment (radical surgery) (P = .04). LPS presents a good survival for patients after 5 years of follow-up (66.4%). Patients who were treated with conservative surgery and presented with distant metastasis showed poor prognosis.

Background The possible association between obesity, underweight, and dental caries remains in debate. In addition, the role of sugar consumption on the abovementioned relationship was little explored. Aim This study aimed to investigate the relationship between nutritional status and dental caries in 12-year-old low-income children. Design This cross-sectional school-based study involved 406 12-year-old children living with limited economic resources. Dental caries was assessed using the decayed component of DMFT and PUFA/pufa index. Children were weighed and measured to assess nutritional status according to z-score/body mass index. Data on socio-economic and demographic characteristics, sugar consumption, sedentary behaviour, and psychosocial factors were collected through validated questionnaires. Multivariable multilevel Poisson regression was performed. Results Underweight children had 60% (RR = 1.60; 95% CI 1.13-2.57) higher mean of decayed teeth and had mean PUFA/pufa 2.8 times higher than children with normal nutritional status. Underweight children with high annual sugar intake had a greater mean of decayed teeth (RR = 2.72; 95% CI 1.46-5.06) than underweight children with low sugar intake. Conclusions Our findings suggest that malnutrition is associated with dental caries among children from low-income families.

Introduction. Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is one of the most devastating complications of diabetes mellitus; however, in contrast to other countries, there are no scientific studies in Portugal evaluating the impact of demographic and clinical characteristics of this pathological entity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of gender, metabolic control, age of diabetic patients, as well as time of disease progression, the appearance of complaints related to neuropathic pain. Material and methods. A multicentre study with a non-probabilistic, convenience sample of 359 patients was performed employing the quantitative method, using the Statistical Package for Social Science 24 software. The p-value of p < 0.05 was defined to consider a result statistically significant. The Spearman correlation coefficient (r) was determined to determine the relationship between categorical variables. Results. There was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of DN between genders (p = 0.633 and r = 0.025). There was a statistically significant relationship between the value of HbA1c and DN, with p = 0.010 and r = 0.136. There is a relationship between age and complaints of neuropathic pain, with p = 0.034 and r = 0.112. The variable, time of disease progression, is also correlated with the appearance of complaints of neuropathic pain with p = 0.020 and r = 0.112. Conclusion. The prevalence of neuropathic pain in subjects with diabetes is not negligible and is associated with modifiable risk factors that can be identified, possibly modified and prevented. The correct approach for these patients, which involves screening and early treatment, is decisive improving functionality and quality of life.

Desmoplastic fibroma is a benign, rare, but locally aggressive lesion. The intraosseous type rarely presents in the jaws. Desmoplastic fibroma represents the intraosseous counterpart of the soft tissue fibromatoses or desmoid tumor, affects predominantly young people with an affinity for the mandible. The aim of this article is to describe a rare case of spontaneous bone regeneration after resection of intraosseous type of Desmoplastic fibroma. We report a case of intraosseous Desmoplastic fibroma involving right body and ramus of the mandible of a 17 years old, male patient, that underwent surgical procedure by Risdon access to remove all lesion with 1 cm free margins and reconstructed with 2.4 mm plate. After 3 years follow up, spontaneous bone regeneration was found with no signs of recurrence of the lesion. In conclusion, cases of spontaneous bone regeneration after mandibular resection is rare and there are few studies and case report in the literature.

BackgroundThe number of intensive care patients aged ≥ 80 years (Very old Intensive Care Patients; VIPs) is growing. VIPs have high mortality and morbidity and the benefits of ICU admission are frequently questioned. Sepsis incidence has risen in recent years and identification of outcomes is of considerable public importance. We aimed to determine whether VIPs admitted for sepsis had different outcomes than those admitted for other acute reasons and identify potential prognostic factors for 30-day survival.ResultsThis prospective study included VIPs with Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores ≥ 2 acutely admitted to 307 ICUs in 21 European countries. Of 3869 acutely admitted VIPs, 493 (12.7%) [53.8% male, median age 83 (81–86) years] were admitted for sepsis. Sepsis was defined according to clinical criteria; suspected or demonstrated focus of infection and SOFA score ≥ 2 points. Compared to VIPs admitted for other acute reasons, VIPs admitted for sepsis were younger, had a higher SOFA score (9 vs. 7,p p p p = 0.02]. Frailty was similar in both groups. Unadjusted 30-day survival was not significantly different between the two groups. After adjustment for age, gender, frailty, and SOFA score, sepsis had no impact on 30-day survival [HR 0.99 (95% CI 0.86–1.15),p = 0.917]. Inverse-probability weight (IPW)-adjusted survival curves for the first 30 days after ICU admission were similar for acute septic and non-septic patients [HR: 1.00 (95% CI 0.87–1.17),p = 0.95]. A matched-pair analysis in which patients with sepsis were matched with two control patients of the same gender with the same age, SOFA score, and level of frailty was also performed. A Cox proportional hazard regression model stratified on the matched pairs showed that 30-day survival was similar in both groups [57.2% (95% CI 52.7–60.7) vs. 57.1% (95% CI 53.7–60.1),p = 0.85].ConclusionsAfter adjusting for organ dysfunction, sepsis at admission was not independently associated with decreased 30-day survival in this multinational study of 3869 VIPs. Age, frailty, and SOFA score were independently associated with survival.

Background The value of mechanical circulatory support (MCS) in cardiogenic shock, especially the combination of the ECMELLA approach (Impella combined with ECMO), remains controversial. Case presentation A previously healthy 33-year-old female patient was submitted to a local emergency department with a flu-like infection and febrile temperatures up to 39 °C. The patient was tested positive for type-A influenza, however negative for SARS-CoV-2. Despite escalated invasive ventilation, refractory hypercapnia (paCO2: 22 kPa) with severe respiratory acidosis (pH: 6.9) and a rising norepinephrine rate occurred within a few hours. Due to a Horovitz-Index Conclusions This exceptional case exemplifies the importance of aggressive MCS in severe cardiogenic shock, which may be especially promising in younger patients with non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy and potentially reversible causes of cardiogenic shock. This case impressively demonstrates that especially young patients may achieve complete neurological restoration, even though the initial prognosis may appear unfavourable.

Acne é uma condição genético-hormonal caracterizada por manchas moderadas a graves que ocorrem devido ao acúmulo de sebo nos folículos capilares por meio da hiperqueratinização folicular. Pode ser inflamatório ou não inflamatório e é autolimitado, o que significa que tende a evoluir para resolução naturalmente. No entanto, os casos mais graves podem exigir tratamento prolongado para evitar o agravamento da condição e cicatrizes permanentes. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o impacto da acne na qualidade de vida de adolescentes e determinar associações com estilo de vida e hábitos alimentares. Estudo descritivo, analítico e transversal realizado com adolescentes brasileiros de 14 a 18 anos de escolas públicas. A coleta de dados envolveu a aplicação de um questionário com informações sociodemográficas, o Global Acne Grading System (GAGS) e o Cardiff Acne Disability Index (CADI). A prevalência de acne foi de 100%. De acordo com o GAGS, 76,63% tinham acne leve, 21,99% acne moderada e 1,37% acne grave.
