Respiratory diseases such as pneumonia are one of the main concerns in the livestock industry. Economic losses owing to pneumonia are prevalent in small ruminants and pathogenic organisms such as Pasteurella and Mannheimia are the principal bacterial agents involved in pneumonic pasteurellosis. Two adult Alpine female goats with signs of respiratory involvement were referred. Clinical examinations of these animals showed fever, anorexia, dyspnea with head and neck strain and open mouth breathing, unilateral serous nasal discharge, abdominal breathing with harsh, and crackles lung sound upon auscultation. Radiography of the thoracic region was performed and severe generalized pulmonary involvement was detected in the goats. Due to the severity of the conflict, both cases were lost despite treatment. At necropsy, consistent findings included non-collapsing lungs with varying degrees of consolidation covered by fibrin and cranioventral consolidation with red-grey discoloration and firm, meaty consistency. Histopathologically, fibrinosuppurative bronchopneumonia was diagnosed in both cases. Finally, following microbiological findings, Pasteurella multocida was isolated from lung lesions of both animals, and pasteurellosis was confirmed. Overall, pasteurellosis is one of the most important pulmonary diseases in goats, and the best way to deal with it is to prevent the disease through vaccination and control stressful behaviors in the environment.

Lumpfish is a novel farmed species used as cleaner fish for the removal of lice from farmed salmon. As often with new, farmed species, there are challenges with bacterial infections. The frequency of prescription of antibiotic agents to lumpfish is increasing, despite the lack of knowledge about appropriate doses, duration of treatment and application protocols for the various antibacterial agents. In the current study, we have tested the effect of medicated feed with florfenicol (FFC), oxolinic acid (OA) and flumequine (FLU) on lumpfish experimentally challenged with Vibrio anguillarum, atypical Aeromonas salmonicida and Pasteurella atlantica. We found that all three antibacterial agents efficiently treated lumpfish with vibriosis using 10 and 20 mg kg-1 day-1 of FFC, 25 mg kg-1 day-1 of OA and 25 mg kg-1 day-1 FLU, whereas only FFC (20 mg kg-1 day-1 ) had good effect on lumpfish with pasteurellosis. None of the antibacterial agents were efficient to treat lumpfish with atypical furunculosis. FFC 20 mg kg-1 day-1 showed promising results in the beginning of the experiment, but the mortality increased rapidly 14 days post-medication. Efficient treatment is important for the welfare of lumpfish and for reducing the risk of development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. To our knowledge, this is the first study to establish protocols for antibacterial treatment of lumpfish.

Background and Aim: Due to the diversified lifestyle and fancy ecology associated with Chitra deer (Axis axis), deer farming has become popular in Bangladesh. Diseases may be the common constrain of successful deer farming. This study aims to investigate the pathological, bacteriological, and nucleic acid based technologies to identify specific causes of morbidity and mortality of captive deer. Materials and Methods: Two deer farms and a park deer (designated as farm A, B, and C) entailing 87, 54, and 20 deer, respectively, showed illness and death constitute the study materials. A total of 42 deer died during this investigation. Following death, routine post-mortem examination, histopathology, impression smear staining, isolation, and identification of bacteria were carried out. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and reverse transcription PCR were carried out to safeguard the etiology. Results: Clinically, farm A and B showed the acute phase of illness and park deer showed chronic illness. Case fatality rates were 90%, 92%, and 100% in farms A, B, and C deer, respectively. Pasteurella multocida and Streptococcus pneumoniae were identified from the visceral organs of farm A deer. Farm B deer was infected with Clostridium perfringens type A. Park deer was infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and hydatid cyst. Conclusion: The infectivity in farm A deer was due to stress as induced by punishing weather. The infectivity in farm B deer was due to feeding a higher volume of protein in the diet. The park C deer may optate infection from companion man and animals living around. The diseases of captive deer identified mainly were zoonotic. It needs extensive veterinary services and specialized technologies to identify these diseases, monitor the infectivity and eliminate the public health important diseases at early onset.

The objective of this randomized clinical study was to compare the effect of 2 antimicrobial interventions, tildipirosin or florfenicol + flunixin meglumine, used for treatment of pneumonia and extralabel treatment for otitis on health parameters and upper respiratory tract (URT) microbiota of preweaned Holstein calves. Housed preweaned Holstein heifers diagnosed with either otitis or pneumonia were assigned into 1 of 2 treatment groups, receiving a single subcutaneous injection of either 4 mg/kg of tildipirosin (TLD; n = 444) or 40 mg/kg of florfenicol combined with 2.2 mg/kg of a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory, flunixin meglumine (FLF; n = 442). Calves were enrolled and treated on the day of diagnosis of the first case of pneumonia or otitis. If a calf had a recurrent case, the opposite drug was administered, respecting an interval of 5 d between drug injections. Blood samples for leukocyte counts were collected at 0, 2, 4, and 6 d after treatment, and rectal temperature was measured daily during the 5 d after treatment. Ear scores were observed from calves with otitis. Additionally, swabs of the URT were collected from a subset of 20 calves in each treatment group at d 0, 3, 6, 9, and 11 following enrollment for analysis of URT microbiota through next-generation sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene and quantitative PCR. Swabs were also collected from a comparative group of 20 healthy calves that did not receive any drug. No differences were observed between groups for recurrence risk of either pneumonia (TLD = 32.4%; FLF = 29.7%) or otitis (TLD = 72.7%; FLF = 73.6%). Similarly, no differences were observed for the total number of treatments for pneumonia (TLD = 1.45; FLF = 1.42) or otitis (TLD = 2.96; FLF = 3.07). On the other hand, both drugs reduced rectal temperature, ear scores, and leukocyte counts, with FLF calves having a greater reduction in rectal temperature within 4 d after treatment. Both TLD and FLF reduced the total bacterial load when compared with healthy untreated calves, but no differences were observed between treatment groups. Furthermore, compared with the untreated group, treated calves had lower mean relative abundances (MRA) of the genera Mannheimia, Moraxella, and Pasteurella within 11, 9, and 3 d after treatment, respectively; however, no significant differences were observed between TLD and FLF. On the other hand, MRA of Mycoplasma was not decreased by both treatments compared to untreated animals, and a higher MRA was observed in the TLD group during 11 d after treatment in comparison to FLF and untreated calves. Based on this data, we concluded that both drugs used in the study were effective in reducing rectal temperature, ear scores, leukocyte counts, and MRA of the genera Mannheimia, Pasteurella, and Moraxella in the URT, and calves treated with FLF had a greater reduction in rectal temperature.

Pasteurella (P.) canis bacteremia is rare with only five reported cases in the literature, which was likely correlated with a state of immunosuppression. A 59-year-old male with a history of right lower extremity (RLE) squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and non-alcoholic cirrhosis presented for a two week duration of RLE pain, swelling, erythema, and open wounds. The patient admitted that his dog has regularly licked his wounds in the past week. Laboratory investigations and imaging confirmed cellulitis and P. canis bacteremia. Additionally, punch skin biopsies showed his SCC is well differentiated and invasive. The patient was started on empirical intravenous antibiotics. Once deemed medically stable and asymptomatic, the patient was discharged from the hospital on culture directed oral antibiotics. He was also educated on wound care and wound hygiene with his dog. It is important for the general practitioner to know that P. canis bacteremia is possible, although rare. Additionally, it is useful to know that patients without animal bites and immunosuppression are at risk of bacteremia. Finally, with the appropriate antibiotics, P. canis bacteremia can have a favorable prognosis.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of the metaphylactic use of a semi-synthetic long-acting macrolide (tildipirosin) on the prevention of pneumonia and otitis in preweaning Holstein calves, as well as its effects on the microbiome of their upper respiratory tract (URT) and feces. Newborn healthy Holstein heifers, collectively housed, were randomly allocated to 1 of 2 treatment groups: treatment (TRT; n = 932) or control (CTR; n = 927). Calves in the TRT group received a single subcutaneous injection of 4 mg/kg tildipirosin (Zuprevo, Merck Animal Health) at 7 ± 7 d of life. Calves in the CTR group received no drug injection. All enrolled calves were evaluated from 1 to 63 ± 3 d of life (weaning age) and monitored daily for any adverse health events during this period. Daily physical examination was performed to diagnose pneumonia and otitis, and body weight was measured weekly in all animals. From a randomly selected subset of 217 calves, blood samples for biochemical variables analysis and swabs were collected weekly from the URT and rectum for analysis of the nasal and fecal microbiome, respectively, via next-generation sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. Total bacterial load was evaluated using quantitative PCR. In addition, another subset of 26 calves was randomly selected and fecal swabs were collected in a more intensive sampling to investigate the short-term effect of tildipirosin administration on the fecal microbiome. We performed general mixed linear models and logistic regression to analyze continuous and binary outcomes, respectively. Tildipirosin metaphylaxis reduced the incidence of otitis (CTR = 47.03%; TRT = 37.55%) and tended to reduce the incidence of pneumonia (CTR = 20.71%; TRT = 17.38%) and the overall mortality risk (CTR = 6.69%; TRT = 4.94%). We observed no significant differences between groups for mortality due to pneumonia (CTR = 0.86%; TRT = 0.97%) or mortality due to otitis (CTR = 2.05%; TRT = 1.39%). Calves in the TRT group had a higher average daily gain than calves in the CTR group. Furthermore, metaphylaxis had no significant effects on the total bacterial load, genus, or phylum analysis of the fecal microbiome from the 2 subset groups. However, for the URT microbiota, we observed a significant decrease in total bacterial load for the TRT group compared to the CTR group 1 week after metaphylactic injection. Tildipirosin metaphylaxis decreased the mean relative abundance of the genera Mannheimia, Moraxella, and Pasteurella but significantly increased the mean relative abundance of Mycoplasma. Although tildipirosin had no positive effect on Mycoplasma, it reduced the mean relative abundance of important pathogenic bacteria in the URT and had positive effects for the control of otitis. The metaphylactic use of tildipirosin can be a suitable strategy for the control of otitis on farms with a high prevalence of this disease.

The primary objective of this cross-sectional study was to identify associations between the diversity and composition of the nasopharyngeal (NP) microbiota and pneumonia status, as diagnosed by ultrasonography (US), in preweaned dairy calves. Characteristics of the NP microbiota were compared between calves with and without pneumonia, as diagnosed by US. Secondary objectives were to compare the composition of the NP microbiota between calves by age, clinical respiratory score (CRS), and previous antibiotic therapy. Holstein heifer calves (n = 50) from a southern Wisconsin dairy were enrolled at either 3 or 6 wk of age; 4 calves were sampled at both time points. Antibiotic treatment history was also collected for the 30 d before enrollment. For the purpose of this study, pneumonia was defined as having lobar pneumonia, as diagnosed by US, in at least 1 lung lobe. Following examination by CRS and US, a deep nasopharyngeal swab was obtained for 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Alpha diversity was reduced in calves that were CRS positive, and beta diversity tended to be different in calves previously treated with antibiotics and in calves that were CRS positive. Microbial diversity was not different between calves with and without pneumonia. The most dominant genus identified was Mycoplasma spp.; however, there was no association between relative abundance (RA) and pneumonia status. The median RA of Mycoplasma spp. was increased by 25 (95% confidence interval, CI: 3, 40) in calves at 3 wk of age compared with 6 wk of age. The median RA of Pasteurella spp. was increased by 1.5 (95% CI: 0.1, 3) in calves with pneumonia, as diagnosed by US, compared with calves without pneumonia. Additionally, Pasteurella spp. was increased by 2.3 (95% CI: 0, 9) in CRS-positive calves compared with CRS-negative calves. The median RA of Psychrobacter spp. was increased by 2 (95% CI: 0, 12) and median RA of Chryseobacterium spp. was increased by 0.15 (95% CI: 0, 2) in calves that were not treated previously with antibiotics compared with calves previously treated with antibiotics.

Animal and human bite injuries are a public health burden. Dog bites outnumber cat bites, but cat bites pose the greatest risk for infection. Skin and soft tissue infections are the most frequent infectious manifestations resulting from bite injury, although invasive infection may occur through direct inoculation or dissemination through the bloodstream. Although contemporary, well-designed trials are needed to inform clinical practice, preemptive antibiotic therapy after a bite injury is warranted for injuries posing high risk for infection and for patients at risk of developing severe infection; antibiotics should target aerobic and anaerobic microbes that comprise the oral and skin flora.

International audience; Background: Pasteurella multocida is a Gram-negative, non-motile, non-spore forming, and aerobic/anaerobic cocobacillus known as the causative agent of human and animal diseases. Humans can often be affected by cat scratch or bite, which may lead to soft tissue infections and in rare cases to bacteremia and septicemia. Commercial vaccines against this agent include inactivated, live attenuated, and non-pathogenic bacteria. Current vaccines have certain disadvantages such as reactogenicity or reversion to virulence. Therefore, the aim of this study was to reach a multi-epitope vaccine candidate that could be serotype independent and covers most incident serotypes of P. multocida. Methods: In this study, reverse vaccinology strategy was used to identify potentially immunogenic and protective epitopes. First, multiple alignments of different sequences of Pasteurella lipoprotein E (PlpE) from various serotypes of P. multocida were analyzed to identify the conserved regions. Bioinformatics tools were then applied to predict and select epitopes for further studies. Results: Three different conserved immunogenic regions were selected according to the selected criteria, and their various sequential orders were evaluated structurally by in silico tools to find the best order. Conclusion: In searching the epitopes of PlpE to design a new vaccine candidate against pasteurellosis, we found the region 1 + region 2 + region 3 (without any linker between regions) of epitope, including the regions of PlpE protein of P. multocida, as the appropriate serotype independent vaccine candidate against pasteurellosis.

We present a bleeding, infected (mycotic) pseudoaneurysm from the organism Pasteurella multocida. The patient presented septic from an infected total hip arthroplasty and was treated with surgical debridement, component retention, and antibiotics. She re-presented with hip pain and a marked hemoglobin decrease. Vascular studies revealed a pseudoaneurysm of the external iliac artery and large hematoma secondary to contiguous spread of her hip infection. The pseudoaneurysm was treated with an endovascular stent before further debridement surgery to avoid exsanguinating hemorrhage with surgical release of her tamponade. This case demonstrates the utmost importance of recognizing and treating vascular pathology in a patient with an infected prosthetic hip, large hematoma, and decreased hemoglobin.

The aim of this article was study the mastitis of a goat under farmer Egyptian conditions. This work was conducted on a private farm containing50baladigoats suffering from symptoms of mastitis. All environmental factors were recorded as housing condition, breeding, health problems, production and feeding. Morphological examination of the udder were carried out. Milk samples of infected goats, were collected for bacterial isolation and sensitivity test. Animals were treated with systemic and local intramammary broad spectrum antibiotic. The results indicated that, 35 cases (70 %) were responded to treatment, and showed normal reproductive and productive performances.15 cases (30 %) of chronic mastitis do not respond to treatment and breeding. Post-mortem examination of these cases revealed widespread diffused chronic mastitis throughout the affected udder. Tissue specimens of infected udder and supra mammary lymph node were fixed in 10% formalin for histopathological examination. Bacteriological examination revealed isolation of Staph aureus, Corynebacterium pyogenes, Salmonella spp., E coli in a single or mixed with other bacteria as Pasteurella spp. Fungus suspect Asperigillus spp. infection and yeast, suspect Candida spp. Pathological examination revealed chronic diffused suppurative and chronic granulomatous mycotic mastitis. In conclusion, mastitis is an important disease of goats and prevention of infection is the key for disease control. Good environ mental and hygienic housing of milking practices are a necessity to minimize the impact of this disease.

Background Pasteurellosis (Pasteurella infection) is one of the most common bacterial infections in rabbits on commercial farms and in laboratory facilities. Curative treatments using antibiotics are only partly efficient, with frequent relapses. Breeding rabbits for improved genetic resistance to pasteurellosis is a sustainable alternative approach. In this study, we infected 964 crossbred rabbits from six sire lines experimentally with Pasteurella multocida. After post-mortem examination and bacteriological analyses, abscess, bacteria, and resistance scores were derived for each rabbit based on the extent of lesions and bacterial dissemination in the body. This is the first study to use such an experimental design and response traits to measure resistance to pasteurellosis in a rabbit population. We investigated the genetic variation of these traits in order to identify potential selection criteria. We also estimated genetic correlations of resistance to pasteurellosis in the experimental population with traits that are under selection in the breeding populations (number of kits born alive and weaning weight). Results Heritability estimates for the novel response traits, abscess, bacteria, and resistance scores, ranged from 0.08 (± 0.05) to 0.16 (± 0.06). The resistance score showed very strong negative genetic correlation estimates with abscess (− 0.99 ± 0.05) and bacteria scores (− 0.98 ± 0.07). A very high positive genetic correlation of 0.99 ± 0.16 was estimated between abscess and bacteria scores. Estimates of genetic correlations of the resistance score with average daily gain traits for the first and second week after inoculation were 0.98 (± 0.06) and 0.70 (± 0.14), respectively. Estimates of genetic correlations of the disease-related traits with average daily gain pre-inoculation were favorable but with high standard errors. Estimates of genetic and phenotypic correlations of the disease-related traits with commercial selection traits were not significantly different from zero. Conclusions Disease response traits are heritable and are highly correlated with each other, but do not show any significant genetic correlations with commercial selection traits. Thus, the prevalence of pasteurellosis could be decreased by selecting more resistant rabbits on any one of the disease response traits with a limited impact on the selection traits, which would allow implementation of a breeding program to improve resistance to pasteurellosis in rabbits.

Changes in intestinal or respiratory microbiomes in infants correlate with increased incidence of asthma, but the causative role of microbiome in the susceptibility to asthma and the host genes that regulate these changes in microbiome are mostly unknown. In this study, we show that decreased responsiveness to allergic asthma in Pglyrp1−/− mice (lacking bactericidal peptidoglycan recognition protein 1) could be transferred to germ-free wild-type mice by colonization of mothers and newborns with microbiota from Pglyrp1−/− mice. These colonized mice had decreased airway resistance and fewer inflammatory cells, less severe histopathology, and lower levels of IgE and proallergic cytokines and chemokines in the lungs. This microbiome-dependent decreased responsiveness to asthma was most pronounced in colonized germ-free BALB/c mice (genetically predisposed to asthma), only partially evident in outbred germ-free Swiss Webster mice, and marginal in conventional BALB/c mice following depletion of microbiome with antibiotics. Mice with a low asthmatic response colonized with microbiota from Pglyrp1−/− mice had increased abundance of Bacteroidetes and decreased abundance of Firmicutes, Tenericutes, Deferribacteres, and Spirochaetes in the feces and increased abundance of Pasteurella in the oropharynx. These changes in bacterial abundance in the feces and oropharynx correlated with lower asthmatic responses in the lungs. Thus, our results show that Pglyrp1 enhances allergic asthmatic responses primarily through its effect on the host intestinal microbiome and identify several bacteria that may increase or decrease sensitivity to asthma. This effect of microbiome is strong in asthma-prone BALB/c mice and weak in asthma-resistant outbred mice and requires germ-free conditions before colonization with microbiota from Pglyrp1−/− mice.

Background Ovariectomy is a common procedure in laboratory rodents used to create a post-menopausal state. Complications including post-surgical abscess are rarely reported, but merit consideration for the health and safety of experimental animals. Case presentation A female C57/black6 mouse was ovariectomized as part of a cohort study. At Day 14 post-surgery, she developed a visible swelling on the right side, which 7 days later increased in size over 24 h, leading to euthanasia of the animal. Gross pathology was consistent with abscess. A core of necrotic tissue was present in the uterine horn. Abscess fluid and affected tissue were collected for Gram stain and bacteriological culture. The abscess core and fluid yielded three distinct types of bacterial colonies identified by 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing as Streptococcus acidominimus, Pasteurella caecimuris, and a novel species in the genus Gemella. Conclusions This is the first report of polymicrobial abscess in a rodent as a complication of ovariectomy, and the first description of a novel Gemella species for which we have proposed the epithet Gemella muriseptica. This presentation represents a potential complication of ovariectomy in laboratory animals.

In a foster cow system, one or more calves are reared by a foster cow. With regard to the growing rejection towards the early separation of cow and calf after calving, such alternative rearing methods with prolonged cow–calf contact are coming more into focus. Nevertheless, there is a lack of recent studies investigating the effects of suckling multiple calves on the udder health of a foster cow. The present study aimed to initially describe the status and development of the udder condition and the microbial colonisation during the foster period. Thereby, the objectives were to determine whether suckling multiple calves was associated with an increase in intramammary infections (IMI) and a deterioration of udder constitution. A total of 99 Holstein Friesian foster cows from a large organic dairy farm in eastern Germany were included in this pilot study. Each foster cow was suckled by 3–4 calves and not additionally milked. Quarter milk samples were taken for cytomicrobiological examination at the beginning and end of the approximately 3.5 months suckling period. At the same time, the udders of 91 of these foster cows were clinically examined by visual assessment and manual palpation. In both the first and second examination (E1 and E2, respectively), Corynebacterium ssp. and non-aureus staphylococci (NaS) constituted the most frequently detected pathogen species in the 385 examined udder quarters. Classifying the quarters into mastitis categories was significantly different between the two examinations (p = 0.001). The number of quarters considered as healthy increased from E1 to E2 by 8.5%. At the same time, the number of quarters with mastitis decreased by 2.6%, the number of quarters with non-specific mastitis by 11.4% and the number of quarters with a latent infection increased by 5.4%. In total, 69.4% of the 121 infected udder quarters in E1 were bacteriologically cured in E2. A cytological cure was achieved in 28.1% of the 385 quarters. Both the bacteriological and cytological cure rate were spontaneous. A new infection occurred in 23.1% of the 385 examined udder quarters and was mainly attributable to infections with Corynebacterium spp. and NaS. During the suckling period, mainly new infections occurred and amounted to 73% in relation to presumed persistent infections (18.9%). The new infections were mainly attributable to infections with Corynebacterium spp. and NaS. Pasteurella spp. were also found in high percentages. A total of 10.1% of the quarters showed an increase in somatic cell count (SCC) above the threshold of 100,000 cells/mL from E1 to E2, indicating a new subclinical mastitis. Regarding udder condition, significant changes during the foster period were an increase in udder skin and teat lesions, a decrease in udder oedema, an increased amount of udder quarters with a consistency considered as normal and an increase in the number of udders showing no sign of udder cleft dermatitis. Moreover, teat length, circumference, and diameter increased significantly (p &lt, 0.05). In conclusion, there is a possibility that suckling multiple calves improves udder health in terms of mastitis but leads to an increased pathogen transmission at the same time, resulting in an increase in latent infections. Additionally, pathogens as Pasteurella spp., which are usually located in the upper respiratory system, could be detected in the mammary gland. The changes concerning the udder condition were manifold. However, it has not yet been conclusively clarified whether all these changes are exclusively due to calf suckling. Further investigations with a non-suckled control group are required.

Many cases of cat and dog bites are associated with Pasteurella spp. infections. Antimicrobial therapy usually entails a β-lactam-β-lactamase inhibitor combination such as amoxicillin-clavulanic acid. Drug resistance in human Pasteurella spp. infections has rarely been reported in literature. In this report, we introduce the first documented case of a human Pasteurella spp. infection with resistance to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid. The potential emergence of drug-resistant Pasteurella spp may alter our therapeutic approach to animal bites in the future. This case highlights the need for further epidemiologic studies on Pasteurella spp antibiotic susceptibility patterns in both humans and cats.

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) causes high morbidity and mortality in beef cattle worldwide. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) monitoring of BRD pathogens is critical to promote appropriate antimicrobial stewardship in veterinary medicine for optimal treatment and control. Here, the susceptibility of Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multicoda isolates obtained from BRD clinical cases (deep lung swabs at post-mortem) among feedlots in four Australian states (2014-2019) was determined for 19 antimicrobial agents. The M. haemolytica isolates were pan-susceptible to all tested agents apart from a single macrolide-resistant isolate (1/88; 1.1%) from New South Wales (NSW). Much higher frequencies of P. multocida isolates were resistant to tetracycline (18/140; 12.9%), tilmicosin (19/140; 13.6%), tulathromycin/gamithromycin (17/140; 12.1%), and ampicillin/penicillin (6/140; 4.6%). Five P. multocida isolates (3.6%), all obtained from NSW in 2019, exhibited dual resistance to macrolides and tetracycline, and a further two Queensland isolates from 2019 (1.4%) exhibited a multidrug-resistant phenotype to ampicillin/penicillin, tetracycline, and tilmicosin. Random-amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) typing identified a high degree of genetic homogeneity among the M. haemolytica isolates, whereas P. multocida isolates were more heterogeneous. Illumina whole genome sequencing identified the genes msr(E) and mph(E)encoding macrolide resistance, tet(R)-tet(H) or tet(Y) encoding tetracycline resistance, and blaROB-1 encoding ampicillin/penicillin resistance in all isolates exhibiting a corresponding resistant phenotype. The exception was the tilmicosin-resistant, tulathromycin/gamithromycin-susceptible phenotype identified in two Queensland isolates, the genetic basis of which could not be determined. These results confirm the first emergence of AMR in M. haemolytica and P. multocida from BRD cases in Australia, which should be closely monitored.

Pasteurella multocida is a common cause of infection following bites or scratches caused by cats and dogs. It is a rarely reported and often overlooked pathogen. Typical presentation is a rapidly developing cellulitis at the infection site. Here we present a rare case of worsening lower extremity paraplegia due to a spinal epidural abscess caused by P. multocida. The patient was a 56-year-old female who had been experiencing several days of back pain, became septic and went on to develop paraplegia. Failure to improve prompted re-evaluation of the diagnosis with subsequent imaging notable for a spinal epidural abscess. Blood cultures grew P. multocida but were initially misidentified as Haemophilus influenzae and only with targeted antibiotic therapy and neurosurgical intervention did she begin to improve. Obtaining an animal history and knowing when to re-evaluate a diagnosis are essential skills for any clinician.

Pasteurella species (spp.) are pleomorphic, Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic bacilli commonly found in the upper respiratory tract and oral cavities of wild and domesticated animals such as dogs and cats. Pasteurella spp. infections in humans are typically caused by animal bites or scratches, or other inadvertent exposure of an open skin lesion to oral secretions of the animal. While skin and soft tissue infections are relatively common, respiratory infections, endocarditis, osteomyelitis, meningitis, and mycotic aneurysms have also been documented. To date, nine cases of mycotic aneurysms caused by Pasteurella spp. have been reported. However, only one of those cases has involved a cerebral mycotic aneurysm, and it had a fatal outcome. This report describes a successfully managed Pasteurella cerebral mycotic aneurysm that had occurred as a complication of underlying mitral valve endocarditis.

Background: Immunity against Pasteurella spp. is not well-known for humans.Methods: We've tested T CD8+ lymphocytes in a patient with a chronic prosthetic joint infection due to Pasteurella spp. to search for a deficit which could have favored her infection. As this deficit was found, we've searched for such a deficit in other patients with Pasteurella spp. Infections, either acute or subacute.Results: Eight patients were tested and all had a persistent T CD8+ lymphocytes deficit. This is striking as these cells are involved in the response to this type of infection in animal models.Conclusion: The authors suggest that a deficit in CD8+ T lymphocytes can be one of the causes for the onset of infections with P. multocida.

Objective Highlight our management of a Pasteurella Multiocida-infected descending thoracic aorta mycotic pseudoaneurysm. Methods Report a case of a canine bite resulting in a P. Multiocida descending thoracic aorta mycotic pseudoaneurysm. Results We present a 61-year-old gentleman who was initially seen in an emergency department after a canine bite. He was admitted and treated with a course of IV antibiotics for P. Multiocida bacteremia and discharged. Three weeks after discharge, he continued to feel generalized malaise and work-up was significant for a descending thoracic aorta mycotic pseudoaneurysm. The patient underwent a low left posterior lateral thoracotomy and femoral-femoral cardiopulmonary bypass for complete pseudoaneurysm resection and aortic replacement with a 24-mm Gelweave graft. Given purulence and gross infection, we planned for a staged approach, with a secondary washout and omental flap for biologic coverage of the graft. The patient did well clinically and was discharged at 14 days to rehabilitation with 6-week intravenous course of antibiotics. Conclusions The patient's clinical course with subsequent follow-up suggest that complete resection of the mycotic pseudoaneurysm, followed by omental flap coverage is a viable strategy to manage mycotic aortic infections with virulent organisms.

This study reports the pathological and microbiological findings of pneumonia in a Mico melanurus caused by Pasteurella canis, confirmed for molecular analyses. It demonstrated the importance that wild species represent in the epidemiology of pasteurellosis in anthropic environments, when inserted into urban areas.

The necessity for diagnosis and treatment of this infection is emphasized by the high number of complications and death rate.

Pasteurella multocida, which colonizes upper respiratory and digestive tracts, is a leading cause of respiratory diseases in many host species. Here, we describe a case of P. multocida pneumonia with hemoptysis. A 72-year-old female diagnosed with bronchiectasis with a 36-year history presented with a worsened infiltrative and granular shadow in the lower right lobe and lingular segment. Bronchial lavage fluid culturing suggested Pasteurella pneumonia. P. multocida was confirmed by 16S rRNA sequencing. The patient was readmitted to our hospital because of hemoptysis, and she was treated successfully with antibiotic therapy. Introduction: The aim of this study was to determine the predisposing effect of bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) on Pasteurella spp. infection in naturally-induced pneumonia in cattle by immunohistochemical labelling. Material and Methods: Lungs of cattle slaughtered in the slaughterhouse were examined macroscopically, and 100 pneumonic samples were taken. The samples were fixed in 10% neutral formalin and embedded in paraffin by routine methods. Sections 5 μm in thickness were cut. The streptavidin-peroxidase method (ABC) was used to stain the sections for immuno-histochemical examination. Results: BRSV antigens were found in the cytoplasm of epithelial cells of bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoles and within inflammatory cell debris and inflammatory exudate in bronchial lumens. Pasteurella spp. antigens were detected in the cytoplasm of the epithelial cells of bronchi and bronchioles, and in cells in the lumens of bronchi and bronchioles. Eleven cases were positive for only one pathogen (six for BRSV and five for Pasteurella spp.), while 35 cases were positive for 2 pathogens: BRSV plus P. multocida (n = 21) or M. haemolytica (n = 14). Conclusion: The presence of high levels of BRSV in dual infections indicates that BSRV may be the main pneumonia-inducing agent and an important predisposing factor for the formation of Pasteurella spp. infections in cattle naturally afflicted with pneumonia.

The incidence of disease caused by Pasteurella sp. in farmed lumpsuckers in Norway has been steadily increasing in recent years, causing significant economic losses and fish welfare issues. The disease affects all life stages, both in hatcheries and after release into salmon cages. Therefore, it is important to establish robust challenge models, to be used for vaccine development. Exposure experiments via intramuscular and intraperitoneal injection underlined the high virulence of the bacteria, whereas the cohabitation and bath models allowed the chronic symptoms of the disease to be studied more accurately. Skin lesions and haemorrhage at the base of fins were observed in the more acute cases of the disease. Symptoms including white spots over the skin, especially around the eyes, characterized the chronic cases. The latter were most prominent from the bath challenge model. Histopathology indicated a systemic pattern of disease, whereas qPCR analysis from head kidney showed that bacteria may be present in survivor fish at the end of the challenges. In all the challenge models investigated, Pasteurella sp. was re-isolated from the fish, thus fulfilling Koch's postulates. These findings highlight the importance of screening of lumpsuckers prior to transfer to minimize the risks of carrying over asymptomatic carriers.

Background : Respiratory diseases are one of the major health issues described in intensive pig production, causing important economic losses. However, there is little information on the prevalence, etiology and clinical-pathological presentation of these diseases in wild boars. For this reason, this work investigated the presence in captive wild boars of pneumonic lesions and bacterial pathogens commonly detected and associated with respiratory diseases in domestic pigs. Materials, Methods & Results : A total of 226 captive wild boar lungs from two farms were examined in a slaughterhouse in Southern Brazil. The pneumonic lesions were classified as cranioventral, dorsocaudal, and disseminated, and the quantification of lesions was calculated. From the total of 226 lungs, 121 were collected for laboratory examination. Lungs with macroscopic lesions suggestive of pneumonia were collected for histological, bacteriological and molecular analysis. The molecular analysis was performed to detect the presence of Actinobacillus ( A. ) pleuropneumoniae , Glaesserella ( G. ) parasuis , Mycoplasma ( M. ) hyopneumoniae , Mycoplasma ( M. ) hyorhinis and Streptococcus ( S. ) suis serotype 2. The percentages of histological lesions and bacterial agents and their association were calculated. Cranioventral consolidation (75.2%) was the most prevalent macroscopic lung lesion, followed by disseminated (21.5%) and dorsocaudal (3.3%) distribution. Microscopically, chronic lesions were the most prevalent, representing 70.2% of the lungs. Moreover, BALT hyperplasia was present in 86.5% of the lungs, suppurative bronchopneumonia in 65.7%, and alveoli infiltrate in 46.8%. Six bacterial pathogens commonly described as agents of pig pneumonia were identified by bacterial or molecular methods: Pasteurella ( P. ) multocida , S. suis , M. hyopneumoniae , A. pleuropneumoniae , G. parasuis and M. hyorhinis . Twenty-eight different combinations of pathogens were identified in 84 samples (69.4%). The most common combinations were: M. hyopneumoniae and A. pleuropneumoniae (13.1%), M. hyopneumoniae , G. parasuis and M . hyorhini s (10.7%), and M. hyopneumoniae , A. pleuropneumoniae and G. parasuis (8.3%). Additionally, M. hyopneumoniae was the most frequent pathogen detected in this study, representing 58.7% of the samples. The detection of M. hyopneumoniae and M. hyorhinis by PCR was associated with the presence of BALT hyperplasia ( P < 0.05) and there was also an association between the detection of M. hyopneumoniae by PCR and suppurative bronchopneumonia ( P < 0.05). In addition, a significant association ( P < 0.05) between the detection of M. hyopneumoniae and A. pleuropneumoniae by PCR and the histological classification (acute, subacute or chronic lesions) was observed. Discussion : The results of this study were similar to those observed in slaughtered domestic pigs, although, the detection of opportunist pathogens was less frequent than that usually described in pig pneumonia. The high prevalence of pneumonia in captive wild boars at slaughter and the similar characteristics of pneumonia in captive wild boars and domestic pigs suggest that the close phylogenetic relationship between pigs and wild boars could influence the susceptibility of both species to the colonization of the same pathogens, indicating that captive wild boars raised in confined conditions could be predisposed to respiratory diseases, similar to domestic pigs. The use of cleaner fish as a delousing method in Norwegian salmonid aquaculture has increased tremendously over the last few years. This has led to the emergence of a new large industry of farming lumpsuckers (Cyclopterus lumpus L.). The use of lumpsuckers as cleaner fish has, however, not been problem-free. Bacterial diseases cause high mortalities with pasteurellosis as one of the major emerging diseases. During the past few years, outbreaks of pasteurellosis in farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) have become more frequent. This has led to an increasing concern that this disease will become common in salmon farming as well. The purpose of this study was to investigate the susceptibility of Atlantic salmon to Pasteurella spp. infection and the possibility of lumpsuckers transmitting pasteurellosis to Atlantic salmon. Atlantic salmon were experimentally challenged, either by bath or by cohabitation with challenged lumpsuckers, using two different strains of Pasteurella spp. (originating from lumpsucker and Atlantic salmon, respectively). No clinical signs of pasteurellosis were observed on any of the Atlantic salmon. The lumpsuckers were, however, equally susceptible to both isolates. Pasteurellosis in farmed lumpsuckers, Cyclopterus lumpus, has emerged as a serious disease in Norwegian aquaculture in recent years. Genomic characterization of the causative agent is essential in understanding the biology of the bacteria involved and in devising an efficient preventive strategy. The genomes of two clinical Pasteurella atlantica isolates were sequenced (≈2.3 Mbp), and phylogenetic analysis confirmed their position as a novel species within the Pasteurellaceae. In silico analyses revealed 11 genomic islands and 5 prophages, highlighting the potential of mobile elements as driving forces in the evolution of this species. The previously documented pathogenicity of P. atlantica is strongly supported by the current study, and 17 target genes were recognized as putative primary drivers of pathogenicity. The expression level of a predicted vaccine target, an uncharacterized adhesin protein, was significantly increased in both broth culture and following the exposure of P. atlantica to lumpsucker head kidney leucocytes. Based on in silico and functional analyses, the strongest gene target candidates will be prioritized in future vaccine development efforts to prevent future pasteurellosis outbreaks.

Lung cancer is the most common cancer type around the world. Although major advances in cancer therapy, lung cancer has been the largest proportion of all cancer-related deaths. The respiratory tract contains many types of bacteria and a distinct lung microbiome in lung cancer patients was described in many studies. The specific roles of these lung microorganisms in lung cancer progression remain unclear. In this study, we evaluated the effect of inhalation of bronchoalveolar fluid (BAL) in the lung cancer cell growth. The microbiome-based immune and carcinogenesis was examined in tumor-bearing mouse model. We found that inhalation of BAL collected from non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients altered the lung microbiota and inhibited tumor cell growth. The inhibitory effect was due to the infiltration of CD3 and CD8+ T cells and decrease of M2 macrophages in lungs. The microbial communities of NSCLC BAL inhalation group were dominated by Pasteurella, whereas the microbial communities of non-cancer control and PBS inhalation group were dominated by Delftia. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) indicated that the genera Pasteurella, Pseudomonas, and Chryseobacterium were increased in NSCLC BAL inhalation group, while genera Delftia, Ezakiella, Blautia, Cloacibacterium, and Microvirga et al. were increased in PBS and Non-cancer group. We demonstrated a significant positive correlation between Pasteurella and cytotoxic CD8+ TIL and a negative correlation with M2 macrophages. Coriobacteriaceae was positively correlated with M2 macrophages and negatively correlated with CD8+ cells. The abundance of Pasteurella was negatively correlated with tumor cell growth. Our findings provide a promising strategy that can be used as a therapeutic vaccine for lung cancer patients.

Background Humans can also be infrequent infected by Pasteurella bettyae. We report the first association of P. bettyae with urethritis and balanitis in men who have sex with men practicing unprotected intercourse. Patients and methods The standard culture for bacteria and fungi in genital samples, and a PCR study for Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Trichomonas vaginalis, Mycoplasma spp. and Ureaplasma spp, were performed. Cultured microorganisms were identified by Maldi-Tof mass spectrometry and the susceptibility of the isolates were evaluated with the gradient test. Results P. bettyae were isolated and were found to be susceptible to penicillin, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, ciprofloxacin, and doxycycline. Conclusion This novel finding highlights the need for complete microbiological screening in adequate samples to detect possible infectious agents in these cases, not limited to conventional agents. These rare microorganisms can be detected by the application of Maldi-Tof in colonies grown in culture media.

Cervical cancer is one of the top lethal malignancies among women worldwide. The current treatment methods have so many drawbacks that new treatment methods need to be developed. Zhidai Decoction (ZDD) is an effective traditional Chinese herbal formulation for gynecological diseases. Its main effect is controlling abnormal leucorrhea which is a typical early clinical manifestation of cervical cancer. However, how ZDD directly affects cervical cancer has not been addressed. In this study, we established a mouse cervical cancer U14 cell subcutaneous transplantation tumor model and took an early intervention with ZDD to evaluate the antitumor effect of ZDD. In addition, we also investigated the regulatory effects of ZDD on the vaginal microbiota using 16S rRNA analysis in this study. Our results showed that ZDD can significantly improve systemic symptoms and reduce vaginal secretions of tumor-bearing mice. Compared with the CCM group (the cervical cancer model group), in the ZDD-treated group, the tumor inhibitory rate was 37.90%, the average daily food intake of mice was increased to 5.27 ± 0.74 g (P<0.05), and the survival time was obviously prolonged to 21 days (P<0.05). Analysis of the sequencing results of 16S rRNA showed that the main microbial genera of the CCM group were Pasteurella (27.20%) and Helicobacter (18.50%), while those in the ZDD group were Staphylococcus (13.22%) and Lactobacillus (4.68%). It revealed that ZDD has the effect of regulating the vaginal microbiota of cervical cancer, especially in increasing the relative abundance of Lactobacillus and Staphylococcus and decreasing the relative abundance of Pasteurella and Helicobacter. The analysis also showed that ZDD could adjust microbiota structure, species abundance, and community compositions of vaginal microbiota. In conclusion, ZDD displayed inhibitory effect on cervical cancer, and it might be based on restoring the balance of vaginal microbiota. Furthermore, our conclusion supports the promotion of ZDD in the early treatment of cervical cancer.

Pasteurella multocida, a zoonotic infectious pathogen, is a rare cause of mycotic aneurysms in human hosts. A 61-year-old male patient with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) was admitted due to fever, chills, and malaise. He had been frequently licked by his pet dog. Soon after admission, a bloodstream infection due to P. multocida was found, and he received two weeks of antimicrobial therapy. However, the bloodstream infection recurred at short intervals. Computed tomography revealed a mycotic aneurysm for which he underwent aortic graft placement. Mycotic aneurysms should be considered in patients with recurrent bloodstream infections due to Pasteurella, especially if they recur at short intervals in patients with a preexisting immunocompromised state.

Pasteurella is a genus of commensal bacteria of the oral cavity of several domesticated animals and a common cause of cellulitis after animal bites. Pasteurella has also been reported as a rare cause of endocarditis, with only 35 prior cases of definite Pasteurella endocarditis in the literature. Here, we present a case of Pasteurella multocida endocarditis treated successfully with surgery and antibiosis, as well as a review of the literature with statistical analysis of correlations between risk factors and clinical outcomes, as well as between treatment choices and clinical outcomes. Despite the small sample size, our analysis indicates a statistically significant correlation between comorbid liver disease and mortality, as well as a significant negative correlation between surgical treatment and mortality. This analysis implies a need for surgical management of endocarditis due to Pasteurella species and for more aggressive management of Pasteurella endocarditis in the setting of comorbid liver disease.

Pasteurella multocida is a pathogen well known for its zoonotic transmission, most commonly by cats and dogs. When bacteremia ensures from an infection, patients with foreign objects present in their bodies, including prosthetic joints and mesh implants, become vulnerable to seeding. There have been multiple documented cases in which P. multocida bacteremia has resulted in infection of both native and prosthetic joints. Furthermore, cases have been documented in which patients with P. multocida bacteremia have developed meningitis and neurological complications. Here, we present a patient with multiple comorbidities including multifactorial immunocompromise, advanced age, and multiple prosthetic joints who developed prosthetic joint infection and spinal osteomyelitis after the development of Pasteurella bacteremia. Aggressive treatment was undertaken given her risk factors, and a combination of antibiotics and surgery was utilized, with the patient making a full recovery.

Objectives Pasteurella bacteraemia is rare, but has been associated with a high mortality rate. The aim of this study was to estimate the impact of comorbidities on patients with Pasteurella bacteraemia. Methods All cases of Pasteurella bacteraemia in adults treated in our centre between January 2008 and December 2017 were included retrospectively and compared with cases identified in a systematic review of the literature via MEDLINE covering the years 1951–2017. The epidemiological, bacteriological, and clinical data were collected, as well as the instances of death after 30 days. Results Twenty cases of Pasteurella bacteraemia identified in our centre and 99 cases from the literature review were included. A major comorbidity was found in 80/119 (67.2%) patients. The death rate at 30 days was 31.1%. The most common comorbidities were cirrhosis, immunosuppressive therapy, and malignant diseases. Age was not associated with mortality. On multivariate analysis, the only factor associated with mortality was a major comorbidity (odds ratio 2.78, 95% confidence interval 1.01–7.70; p = 0.04). Conclusions This study confirms the high mortality rate and highlights the importance of the host background, independent of age, in Pasteurella bacteraemia. Clinicians should be aware of the comorbidities in cases of Pasteurella infection, due to the poor prognosis of bacteraemia.

Aim This study aimed to create rapid characterization and genotyping of Pasteurella multocida (PM) protocol using modern molecular biology techniques. Materials and methods Thirty bacterial isolates were characterized by capsular and somatic identification using conventional procedure followed by multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR), restriction endonucleases analysis (REA), and finally confirmed by sequence analysis. Two local vaccine strains and two field isolates were identified as PM Type A and B. Results A total of 30 isolates were found positive for PM either morphologically and biochemically; however, multiplex PCR technique identified only 22 isolates as Pasteurella species using universal primers while 8 isolates were found negative for PM. 12 of 22 isolates (54%) were characterized at the same reaction into PM Type A, five isolates (23%) were Type B and the rest five isolates (23%) of tested isolates were negative for Types A, B, and D. Hemorrhagic septicemia Type B: 2 or B: 5 could be identified somatically within PM capsular serogroup B using PCR technique. Somatic characterization of PM was done using REA that could identify all PM Type A into A:1 and all PM Type B into B: 2. These protocols were verified for its accuracy and reliability by sequence analysis of two vaccine strains of PM Type A and B that were characterized previously by biochemical and serological methods as well as two selected isolates from the 22 positive isolates representing PM Type A and B. Conclusion PCR and REA could confirm the identity of PM and provide a rapid and reliable characterization in comparison with biochemical analysis and conventional serotyping that may take up to 2 weeks. Hence, they can reduce the time needed for polyvalent vaccine production and when the reference antisera are unavailable. Moreover, the identity of Omp-H for vaccine and field strains may provide better data to control Pasteurellosis in Egypt.

Various infections in humans, such as cellulitis, rarely bacteremia, endocarditis, meningitis, and septic arthritis, are a result of domestic cat or dog bites. These infections are rarely seen in an immunocompetent person, without an associated animal bite. Case Report: We present a case of refractory Pasteurella multocida bacteremia without any animal bite in an immunocompetent person. Conclusions: Pasteurella multocida bacteremia has been seen in immunocompromised patients and mostly after a cat or dog bite or scratch but might also happen in immunocompetent humans with only pet licking rather than biting, which might increase hospital and emergency department visits or admissions in the future.

Background The microbiota of the bovine upper respiratory tract has been recently characterized, but no data for the lower respiratory tract are available. A major health problem in bovine medicine is infectious bronchopneumonia, the most common respiratory syndrome affecting cattle. With this study, we used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to characterize and compare the microbial community composition of the upper and lower respiratory tracts in calves. Results The microbiota of the upper (nasal swab [NS]) and the lower (trans-tracheal aspiration [TTA]) respiratory tracts of 19 post-weaned Piedmontese calves with (8/19) and without (11/19) clinical signs of respiratory disease, coming from six different farms, was characterized by 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding. A total of 29 phyla (29 in NS, 21 in TTA) and 305 genera (289 in NS, 182 in TTA) were identified. Mycoplasma (60.8%) was the most abundant genus identified in both the NS (27.3%) and TTA (76.7%) samples, followed by Moraxella (16.6%) in the NS and Pasteurella (7.3%) in the TTA samples. Pasteurella multocida (7.3% of total operational taxonomic units [OTUs]) was the most abundant species in the TTA and Psychrobacter sanguinis (1.1% of total OTUs) in the NS samples. Statistically significant differences between the NS and the TTA samples were found for both alpha (Shannon index, observed species, Chao1 index, and Simpson index; P = 0.001) and beta (Adonis; P = 0.001) diversity. Comparison of the NS and TTA samples by farm origin and clinical signs revealed no statistical difference (P > 0.05), except for farm origin for the NS samples when compared by the unweighted UniFrac metric (P = 0.05). Conclusions Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, we characterized the microbiota of the upper and lower respiratory tracts of calves, both healthy individuals and those with clinical signs of respiratory disease. Our results suggest that environmental factors may influence the composition of the upper airway microbiota in cattle. While the two microbial communities (upper and lower airways) differed in microbial composition, they shared several OTUs, suggesting that the lung microbiota may be a self-sustaining, more homogeneous ecosystem, influenced by the upper respiratory tract microbiota. Bovine respiratory disease is the most costly disease facing the cattle industry. Increasing resistance to antimicrobial treatment has been presented as a significant contributing factor, often through summarized susceptibility testing data. We assessed the relationship between previous antimicrobial treatment and antimicrobial susceptibility results from isolates of Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni cultured from bovine respiratory cases submitted to the Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory from 2013 to 2015. Antimicrobial susceptibility data from 1,251 bacterial isolates were included for analysis. More bacterial isolates from cattle that received antimicrobial treatment showed resistance compared to isolates from untreated cattle, and the percentage of resistant isolates increased as the number of antimicrobial treatments increased. Resistance to enrofloxacin, spectinomycin, tilmicosin, and tulathromycin was present in >75% of M. haemolytica isolates from cattle that had received 3 or more antimicrobial treatments; resistance to each of those 4 antimicrobials was present in ≤10% of M. haemolytica isolates from untreated cattle. Similar but less dramatic trends were apparent for isolates of P. multocida and H. somni. The percentage of multi-drug resistant bacterial isolates also increased with the number of treatments. Results of our study suggest that previous antimicrobial treatment may have a profound effect on antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Summarized susceptibility results from diagnostic laboratories should not be used to make generalized statements regarding trends in antimicrobial resistance without providing context regarding antimicrobial treatment history.

For the first time was developed an effective and specific histochemical method for the diagnosis of mixed pasteurellosis and ascaridosis diseases of birds, which can be used in conjunction with bacteriological, serological and helminthocoproscopic studies, and in cases where it is impossible to diagnose serologic methods. The proposed method of histochemical diagnostics can be used for the detection of pasterelo-ascaridium carriers during mixed pasteurellosis and ascaridosis disease of birds. In the birds of the experimental group (clinically diseased bird), the pasteurial antigen in the histological preparations of the organs tissues after the histochemical study looked like local and diffuse clusters of oval and deep form of intense purple color and local clusters of oblong-shaped larvae with the presence of a head and a tail of blue and eggs of light purple color On histological sections of tissues and organs of the control group (clinically healthy bird), such changes were absent. For investigation of the organs of the experimental group (clinically diseased poultry), we have established the following areas of accumulation of pasteurial antigen and larvae and eggs of ascarids: in the heart – observed postponement of the antigen Pasteurella multocida in the form of strips throughout the area of the histological cut along the length of the muscle fibers and the loss of their delineation and fragmentation; in the liver – observed the diffuse location of the Pasteurella multocida antigen throughout the histological section in the lumen of the blood vessels and around them, the Disse spaces, between the hepatocytes; histochemically detected reduction of AsAT – by 84.3% and bilirubin – by 74.5%; in the muscular stomach – there was a diffuse postponement of the pasteurial antigen throughout the histologic section, but the largest accumulation was observed around the fibers of smooth muscle tissue of dark purple; in the spleen – the presence of Pasteurella multocida antigen throughout the histological section around lymphoid clusters, blood vessel walls, and intensive deposition of the antigen were observed around the splenic artery in the form of a deep, intense violet color; in the duodenum – observed diffuse deposition of the Pasteurella multocida antigen across the entire histologic area around the blood vessels, lymphatic follicles, villi of the mucous membrane, between the enterocytes, the mucosal muscle folds, the intramural ganglion nodules in the form of the deep form; Intestinal wall, blood vessels, licorice glands, larvae of ascarid species of Ascaridia galli species were observed blue, around granular grains around the dead larvae; Histochemically, decreased activity of alkaline phosphatase – by 70% and mucin – by 82.4%; in the kidneys – locally observed the presence of a Pasteurella multocida pasteur antigen around the intercellular veins, a capsule of the nephron, a circular oval-shaped distal tubule, a dark violet color; Histochemically, creatinine decreased by 45.4%.

Streptococcus canis (Sc) is a zoonotic pathogen that is transferred mainly from companion animals to humans. One of the major virulence factors in Sc is the M-like protein encoded by the scm gene, which is involved in anti-phagocytic activities, as well as the recruitment of plasminogen to the bacterial surface in cooperation with enolase, and the consequent enhancement of bacterial transmigration and survival. This is the first reported human case of uncomplicated bacteremia following a dog bite, caused by Streptococcus canis harboring the scm gene. The similarity of the 16S rRNA from the infecting species to that of the Sc type strain, as well as the amplification of the species-specific cfg gene, encoding a co-hemolysin, was used to confirm the species identity. Furthermore, the isolate was confirmed as sequence type 9. The partial scm gene sequence harbored by the isolate was closely related to those of other two Sc strains. While this isolate did not possess the erm(A), erm(B), or mef(A), macrolide/lincosamide resistance genes, it was not susceptible to azithromycin: its susceptibility was intermediate. Even though human Sc bacteremia is rare, clinicians should be aware of this microorganism, as well as Pasteurella sp., Prevotella sp., and Capnocytophaga sp., when examining and treating patients with fever who maintain close contact with companion animals.

A cross sectional study was carried out on pasteurellosis of small ruminants in Fogera Woreda, Ethiopia. The objectives of this research were isolation and characterization of the bacterial species by culture and biochemical testes, and determining the prevalence in apparently pneumonic small ruminants. Out of the total 988 samples examined, 322 were detected positive for pasteurella with an overall infection rate of 32.6%. Two monovalent vaccines against pasteurellosis were developed and tested for efficacy using a previously established bath challenge model. High levels of specific antibodies were detected following vaccination. While the vaccine efficacy trial indicated that some level of protection was obtained, high mortality was still observed. qPCR analysis of head kidney tissues from surviving fish post challenge showed no difference in bacterial numbers in vaccinated and non-vaccinated fish. Clinical symptoms observed in moribund and diseased fish included white spots on the skin and around the eyes, frayed fins and redness around the mouth and fin bases. Despite production of specific antibodies, the protection against experimental challenge was relatively weak. A reason for this could potentially be that the specific antibodies produced are not alone enough to provide complete protection against pasteurellosis in lumpsuckers. Confocal and scanning electron microscopy of head kidney leucocytes exposed to Pasteurella sp. in vitro gave indications of the interactions between the pathogen and leucocytes. The results indicate that parts of the immune system other than humoral antibodies could be important for protection against pasteurellosis. Our combined results highlight the need for further work on host-pathogen interaction between Pasteurella sp. and lumpsuckers.

Pasteurella multocida is frequently associated with soft tissue infections related to animal bites or scratches. These infections are usually mild but can lead to serious complications especially in high-risk patients. We present a chronic Pasteurella. multocida vertebral osteomyelitis with extensive spondylodiscitis, myositis and epidural abscess in a patient with diabetes and liver cirrhosis. Pasteurella multocida should be suspected in bone and soft tissue infections even if the site of infection is distant to the site of the animal bite, scratch or lick, especially in high-risk patients. Mycoplasma bovis is an important etiologic agent of bovine respiratory infection and predominantly causing chronic pneumonic lesion. The present study encompassed standardized pathological, immunohistological and molecular technique for diagnosing natural bovine pneumonic cases with Mycoplasma bovis associated lesions. During the study, examination of 87 carcasses putatively died of pneumonia where Mycoplasma bovis was ascertained in two bovine female calves by immunohistological staining and Polymerase chain reaction. The specific pathological lesions were noted as chronic bronchopneumonia with mild to moderate caseonecrotic lesion and suppurative bronchopneumonia typical of Pasteurella infection. The other bacterial organism associated with these cases was found to be of Pasteurella multocida detected on isolation. No viral etiological association was detected in immunohistological examination in respect of bovine parainfluenza type 3, bovine respiratory syncytial virus and infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus. The result also revealed that M bovis infection may develop into a severe necrosuppurative bronchopneumonia when associated with high numbers of intralesional organism and into mild catarrhal bronchointerstitial pneumonia when associated with low numbers of organism.
