Identification of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been occurring at earlier ages, leading to a need for interventions that suit this age range. Because young children’s development is highly dependent on adults and positive adult relationships, fields that traditionally have success in treating ASD, such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), must explicitly consider relationships. At the same time, Infant/Early Childhood Mental Health (I/ECMH) specialists that have traditionally focused on the parent and child relationship must recognize the importance of addressing atypical or difficult child behavior as major motivating factor or port of entry with families. This paper discusses two seemingly different approaches to the treatment of young children, the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) informed Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) and Infant/Early Childhood Mental Health (I/ECMH) and proposes that they are complementary therapies that can be used simultaneously within the context of an interdisciplinary team to treat the “whole” child and his/her relationships. As demonstrated by the case example, combining the strengths of ABA and mental health services when working with very young children and families has the potential for many benefits.

Given the substantial increase in the numbers of students identified with an autism spectrum disorder, it is imperative that effective training for classroom teachers, administrators, and other support staff be undertaken to increase the capacity within schools to effectively educate these students. Although many professional development programs exist, the outcomes of these programs are seldom evaluated. This article discusses the benefits of using a logic model framework to develop and measure the outcomes of professional development programs. The article discusses two main types of goals that need to be developed and included in such evaluations: (a) knowledge, awareness, and perception goals and (b) action goals. This article presents detailed information about the use of logic models in training program evaluations and gives examples of how program elements can be planned, presented, and evaluated in light of the utility of logic models.

This study investigated families of children with autism spectrum disorders using early intervention and early childhood services, as well as the perceived efficacy and developmental outcomes related to the services and service delivery methods. Results indicated that a variety of recommended practices are not being used by families and interventionists and that intensity of engagement is less than suggested. Parents indicated that parent training was the most effective service in contributing to their child's growth. Significant, yet small, correlations were found between several intervention services/service delivery models and developmental outcomes across areas, including social, emotional, and cognitive development. The importance of assessing social validity related to outcomes is addressed, as are potential implications for service providers.
