Background Interatrial block (IAB), defined as a conduction delay between the right and left atrium, is manifested on the electrocardiogram as a prolonged P-wave duration. Large number of studies recently have been published regarding the prevalence of IAB and its associations with the risk of atrial fibrillation and ischemic stroke. Cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of mortality in chronic kidney disease (CKD). In this study, we aimed to investigate echocardiographic predictors of IAB in patients with severe CKD. Methods This study enrolled a total of 155 patients [male: 95 (61.3%), mean age: 56.3 +/- 12.8 years] with severe CKD (glomerular filtration rate < 30 mL/min). All patients were evaluated by electrocardiography and transthoracic echocardiography. IAB was defined as P wave duration of >= 120 ms on electrocardiography. Results Electrocardiography revealed IAB in 54 patients. The baseline demographic characteristics of the patients were similar in both groups with and without IAB. Left atrial diameter (LAD), left ventricular end-systolic and end-diastolic diameters, interventricular septal thickness, posterior wall thickness, left ventricular mass, left ventricular mass index (LVMI), and the prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy were found to be significantly increased in patients with IAB. Increased LAD (OR = 1.119; 95% CI 1.019-1.228; p = 0.019) and LVMI (OR = 1.036; 95% CI 1.003-1.070; p = 0.031) were found to be independent predictors of IAB. Conclusion A significant association exists between the presence of IAB and echocardiographic parameters related to left ventricular hypertrophy and left atrial dilatation. ObjectiveThe appropriate treatments for the different molecular subgroups of medulloblastomas are challenging to determine. Hence, this study aimed to examine the expression profiles of long non-coding RNAs (LncRNAs) to determine a marker that may be important for treatment selection in these subgroups.MethodsChanges in the expression of LncRNAs in the tissues of patients with medulloblastoma, which are classified into four subgroups according to their clinical characteristics and gene expression profiles, were examined via reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Moreover, there association with patient prognosis was evaluated.ResultsThe expression levels of MALAT1 and SNGH16 were significantly higher in patients with group 3 medulloblastoma than in those with other subtypes. Patients with high expression levels of MALAT1 and SNGH16 had a relatively shorter overall survival than those with low expression levels.ConclusionsPatients with group 3 medulloblastoma have a high MALAT1 level, which is associated with poor prognosis. Therefore, MALAT1 can be a new therapeutic target in medulloblastoma.

Introduction. Ulegyria results from perinatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury in term infants. The specific mushroom-shaped configuration of ulegyria results from small atrophic circumvolutions at the bottom of a sulcus underlying an intact gyral apex. Clinically, ulegyria is generally associated with epilepsy. Here, we aimed to delineate the characteristics of patients with ulegyria and the epileptic seizures they experience. Material and methods. Medical records including radiology and pathology reports, video-electroencephalographic (EEG) analysis, operative notes, hospital progress and outpatient clinic notes were reviewed retrospectively in a total of 10 ulegyria patients. Results. Patients ages ranged between 24 and 58 years (mean, 32 ± 9.8 years). Past medical history was confirmed for neonatal asphyxia in 2 (20%). Neurological examination was remarkable for spastic hemiparesis in 1 (10%) patient with perisylvian ulegyria and for visual field deficits in 2 patients (20%) with occipital ulegyria. Ulegyria most commonly involved the temporoparietal region (n = 5, 50%) followed by the perisylvian area (n = 2, 20%). Except the one with bilateral perisylvian ulegyria, all patients had unilateral lesions (n = 9, 90%). Hippocampal sclerosis accompanied ulegyria in 2 patients (20%). All patients experienced epileptic seizures. Mean age at seizure onset was 8.8 ± 5.4 years (range, 2-20 years). Interictal scalp EEG and EEG-video monitoring records demonstrated temporoparietal and frontotemporal activities in 5 (50%) and 2 (20%) patients, respectively. The seizures were successfully controlled by antiepileptic medication in 8 patients (n = 8, 80%). The remaining 2 patients (%20) with concomitant hippocampal sclerosis required microsurgical resection of the seizure foci due to medically resistant seizures. Discussion. Ulegyria is easily recognized with its unique magnetic resonance imaging characteristics and clinical presentation in the majority of cases. It is highly associated with either medically resistant or medically controllable epileptic seizures. The treatment strategy depends on the age at onset and extends of the lesion that has a significant impact on the severity of the clinical picture.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between carotid intima-media thickness and the presence of fragmented QRS in end-stage renal disease patients. Methods: The study included 100 end-stage renal disease patients who received hemodialysis treatment. Two groups were formed according to the presence of electrocardiography and fragmented QRS: the fragmented QRS (+) (Group I) and the fragmented QRS (-) (Group II). Echocardiographic measurements of the cardiac dimensions and carotid intima-media thickness were examined. Results: The study population included 41 end-stage renal disease patients with fragmented QRS (48.8% male) and a control group of 59 end-stage renal disease patients without fragmented QRS (35.6% male) on electrocardiography. Left ventricular end systolic diameters (p = 0.012),left ventricular end diastolic diameters (p < 0.001), left atrial diameter (p = 0.001), interventricular septal thickness (p < 0.001), posterior wall thickness (p < 0.001) and left ventricular hypertrophy (p < 0.001), blood urea nitrogen (p = 0.011), creatinine (p = 0.014), uric acid (p < 0.05) and parathyroid hormone (p < 0.05) values were found to be significantly increased in the fragmented QRS (+) group. The right and left carotid intima-media thickness values were significantly higher in fragmented QRS (+) patients than fragmented QRS (-) patients (right:[0.81 ± 0.19] vs [0.62 ± 0.14] mm, p < 0.001) and left: [0.83 ± 0.19 vs 64 ± 0.14], p < 0.001; respectively). Conclusions: In end-stage renal disease patients, the presence of fragmented QRS, left ventricular hypertrophy and increased carotid intima-media thickness are important markers in the evaluation of the inflammatory process of atherosclerosis.

This study aims to assess the relationship between oxidative DNA damage and iron status in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) compared to those with normal glucose tolerance in the first and the second trimesters of pregnancy. Maternal serum and urine samples were collected in the 11th-14th weeks and the 24th-28th weeks of gestation. In addition to oral glucose tolerance test in the second trimester, fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, ferritin and hemoglobin levels were measured in blood samples. Urinary levels of oxidative DNA damage products 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG) and 8,5'-cyclo-2'-deoxyadenosines (S-cdA, R-cdA) were determined using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry with isotope-dilution. In the first trimester, urinary 8-OH-dG levels were found higher in the GDM group (n = 33) than in the control group (n = 84) (p = 0.006). R-cdA and S-cdA levels were not significantly different between the two groups (p = 0.794 and p = 0.792 respectively). When the cases were stratified according to their first trimester ferritin levels, women with ≥50th centile (≥130 ng/mL) demonstrated higher levels of 8-OH-dG and R-cdA than those under50th centile (p = 0.034, p = 0.009). In the GDM group, there was a positive correlation between the second trimester 8-OH-dG and ferritin and 1st-hour glucose levels (p = 0.014, p = 0.020). This is the first study where oxidative DNA damage is evaluated in both early and late periods of pregnancy. Our findings reveal an association between GDM and iron status and oxidative DNA damage.

Giriş: Kardiyak sendrom X (KSX) noninvaziv stres testlerinde tespit edilebilen iskemi olmasına rağmen koroner anjiyografide koroner arter stenozu bulgularının olmadığı tipik anjina olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Bozulmuş koroner mikrosirkülasyon, inflamasyon ve endotel disfonksiyonu KSX için kabul edilmiş etyolojik faktörlerdir. Ventriküler aktivasyon zamanının (VAZ) miyokardiyal iskemi durumunda Purkinje liflerinde ve miyositlerdeki iletim yavaşlamasına bağlı olarak uzadığı bildirilmiştir. Bu çalışmada, KSX hastalarında aralarında VAZ’ın da bulunduğu elektrokardiyografik parametrelerin araştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Hastalar ve Yöntem: Çalışmaya KSX tanısı alan 120 hasta (ortalama yaş: 54.7 ± 8.6 yıl , erkek: 53) ile iskemisi olmayan 130 sağlıklı kontrol (ortalama yaş: 53.3 ± 8.9 yıl , erkek: 66) dahil edildi. Tüm hastalar elektrokardiyografi ve transtorasik ekokardiyografi ile değerlendirildi. VAZ elektrokardiyografide QRS kompleksinin başlangıcından R veya R’ dalgasının zirvesine kadar geçen zaman aralığı olarak tanımlandı. Bulgular: KSX hastaları ile kontrol grubu arasında demografik, laboratuvar ve ekokardiyografik parametreler açısından anlamlı bir fark izlenmedi. Elektrokardiyografik parametreler karşılaştırıldığında gruplar arasında kalp hızı, P dalga süresi, PR aralığı, QT ve düzeltilmiş QT aralığı açısından anlamlı fark yok iken, QRS süresi (95.1 ± 13.8 ve 90.4 ± 12.7 msn, p= 0.006) ve VAZ (34.8 ± 5.7 ve 29.2 ± 5.6 msn, p< 0.001) KSX grubunda anlamlı olarak daha uzun olarak tespit edildi. Sonuç: Bu çalışmada KSX hastalarında QRS süresi ve VAZ’ın anlamlı olarak uzadığı gösterilmiştir. Bu uzama KSX hastalarındaki bozulmuş mikrovasküler perfüzyon ve iskemiye bağlı iletim yavaşlamasına bağlı gelişmiş olabilir., Introduction: Cardiac syndrome X (CSX) is defined as typical angina with detectable ischaemia on noninvasive stress tests without any evidence of coronary artery stenosis during coronary angiography. Impaired coronary microcirculation, inflammation and endothelial dysfunction are accepted aetiological factors for CSX. The ventricular activation time (VAT) has been reported to be prolonged in myocardial ischaemia due to the conduction delay in the Purkinje fibres and the myocytes. In this study, we aimed to investigate the electrocardiographic parameters including VAT in patients with CSX. Patients and Methods: This study enrolled 120 patients (mean age, 54.7 ± 8.6 years; male, 53) diagnosed with CSX and 130 healthy controls (mean age, 53.3 ± 8.9; male, 66) without ischaemia. All patients underwent electrocardiography and transthoracic echocardiography. VAT was defined as the interval from the beginning of the QRS complex until the peak of the R or R’ wave. Results: There was no significant difference in terms of demographic, laboratory and echocardiographic parameters between CSX patients and controls. Comparison of electrocardiographic parameters yielded that there was no significant difference in terms of the heart rate, P-wave duration, PR interval, QT and corrected QT intervals between the groups. However, the QRS duration (95.1 ± 13.8 vs. 90.4 ± 12.7 msec; p= 0.006) and VAT (34.8 ± 5.7 vs. 29.2 ± 5.6 msec; p< 0.001) were significantly higher in patients with CSX. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that QRS duration and VAT were prolonged significantly in patients with CSX. This prolongation may be due to the presence of impaired microvascular perfusion and ischaemia-induced conduction delay.

Introduction Impaired coronary microcirculation, inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction were reported etiological factors for microvascular angina (MVA). Recently, increased epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) thickness has been associated with hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and coronary artery disease in general population. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the EAT thickness in patients with MVA. Methods This study enrolled 200 patients (83 males; mean age: 55.4 ± 8.2 years) who have been diagnosed with MVA and 200 controls (89 males; mean age: 54.4 ± 8.5 years). All patients underwent transthoracic echocardiography, and EAT thickness was measured from a parasternal long-axis view as the hypoechoic space on the right ventricular free wall. Results The mean EAT thickness was significantly higher in MVA patients than the controls (5.5 ± 1.1 vs. 4.9 ± 0.7 mm; p p = 0.023). In receiver operating characteristic curve analyses, EAT thickness above 5.3 mm predicted MVA with a sentivity of 68% and a specificity of 63% (AUC = 0.711, 95% CI = 0.659–0.762; p Conclusions The EAT thickness was observed significantly higher in MVA patients as compared to controls. Increased EAT thickness may be associated with mechanisms that play a major role in the pathogenesis of MVA.

Background Previous studies have demonstrated that homocysteine and asymmetric dimethyl arginine (ADMA) levels were strongly associated with cardiovascular diseases including coronary artery disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of plasma homocysteine and ADMA levels in the pathogenesis of coronary slow flow (CSF) phenomenon. Methods Twenty-three patients with CSF and 25 controls with normal coronary flow were included in this study. The quantitative measurement of coronary blood flow was performed using the thrombolysis in myocardial infarction frame count method. Plasma homocysteine and ADMA levels were determined using enzymatic assays from venous blood samples. Results The patients with CSF had significantly higher plasma homocysteine levels than controls (16.2 ± 7.6 vs. 12.2 ± 2.2 μM/L; p = 0.023). The uric acid levels were significantly higher in CSF group than controls (5.4 ± 1.1 vs. 4.6 ± 0.9 mg/dl; p = 0.011). Plasma ADMA levels were also higher in the CSF group; however, this was not statistically significant (0.6 ± 0.1 vs. 0.5 ± 0.2 μM/L; p = 0.475). Conclusions Increased homocysteine and uric acid levels may play an important role in the pathogenesis of CSF. Further large scale studies are required to determine the relationship between ADMA levels and CSF.

Objective: heart failure (HF) is a progressive clinical syndrome. SELFIE-TR is a registry illustrating the overall HF patient profile of Turkey. Herein, all-cause mortality (ACM) data during follow-up were provided. Methods: this is a prospective outcome analysis of SELFIE-TR. Patients were classified as acute HF (AHF) versus chronic HF (CHF) and HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), HF with mid-range ejection fraction, and HF with preserved ejection fraction and were followed up for ACM. Results: there were 1054 patients with a mean age of 63.3±13.3 years and with a median follow-up period of 16 (7-17) months. Survival data within 1 year were available in 1022 patients. Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most prevalent and deadliest subtype of glioma. Despite current innovations in existing therapeutic modalities, GBM remains incurable, and alternative therapies are required. Previously, we demonstrated that Olea europaea leaf extract (OLE) kills GBM cells by modulating miR-181b, miR-137, miR-153 and Let-7d expression. However, although oleuropein (OL) is the main compound in OLE, its role in the antitumour effect of OLE remains unknown. This study determined the effect of OL on GBM cell line T98G and compared the results with our previous findings regarding the effect of OLE on the same cell line. The antiproliferative activity of OL and its effect on temozolomide (TMZ) response were tested inT98G cells using WST-1 assay. OL inhibition was evaluated using one-way analysis of variance with Tukey’s post hoc test. The effect of OL on miR-181b, miR-137, miR-153 and Let-7d expression was assessed using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Fold differences in expression between untreated, OL or OL + TMZ-treated samples were calculated using 2−ΔCt method. Significance was evaluated using an independent sample t-test. Treatment with 277.5 and 555 µM OL resulted in 39.51% and 75.40% reductions in T98G cells within 24 h. Coadministration of 325 µM TMZ and 277.5 or 555 µM, OL caused 2.08- and 2.83-fold increases, respectively, in the therapeutic effect of TMZ. OL + TMZ significantly increased microRNA expression, particularly Let-7d, than OLE. In conclusion, OL has an antitumour effect on GBM cells mainly via regulation of Let-7d expression. The present results also indicate other minor compounds in OLE play important anticancer roles.

Objective There are lack of studies considering the suboptimal management of dyslipidemia especially in cardiology outpatient clinics. This study was conducted to assess the patient adherence to cholesterol treatment recommendations and attainment of low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) goals. Methods EPHESUS (NCT02608645) is a national, observational and multicenter registry which has been designed as a cross-sectional study to allow inclusion of all consecutive patients with hypercholesterolemia in cardiology outpatient clinics. The present subgroup analyses of the EPHESUS trial included patients with known peripheral artery disease or atherosclerotic cerebrovascular disease, and coronary heart disease namely secondary prevention. Results The present analysis of the EPHESUS study included 1482 patients (62.79 +/- 10.4 years, 38.2% female) with secondary prevention from 40 sites in Turkey. Regarding recommended lipid targets for LDL-C, only 267 patients (18%) were below the target of 70 mg/dL. Females were significantly more off-target when compared with male patients (396, 85.5% vs 67, 14.5%; P = 0.017). Moreover, the achievement of LDL-C goal was significantly decreased with illiteracy (233, 19.2% vs 35, 13.1%; P = 0.02). Patients who think that the cholesterol treatment should be terminated when the cholesterol level of a patient has normalised were higher in the off-target group (34.0% vs 24.7%, P < 0.001). Besides, physician perceptions about LDL-C goal for secondary prevention were significantly related with LDL-C target attainment. Conclusions EPHESUS is an important study with large population in terms of representing real-life practice of the adherence to dyslipidemia guidelines in secondary prevention patients in Turkey. Perceptions, knowledge, and compliance with the guidelines for secondary prevention have increased, but it is far below from the desired levels even in cardiology outpatient clinics. Bipolar disorder (BD) poses a significant public health concern, with roughly one‐quarter of sufferers attempting suicide. BD is characterized by manic and depressive mood cycles, the recurrence of which can be effectively curtailed through lithium therapy. Unfortunately, the most frequently employed lithium salt, lithium carbonate (Li2CO3), is associated with a host of adverse health outcomes following chronic use: these unwanted effects range from relatively minor inconveniences (e.g., polydipsia and polyuria) to potentially major complications (e.g., hypothyroidism and/or renal impairment). As these undesirable effects can limit patient compliance, an alternative lithium compound with a lesser toxicity profile would dramatically improve treatment efficacy and outcomes. Lithium orotate (LiC5H3N2O4; henceforth referred to as LiOr), a compound largely abandoned since the late 1970s, may represent such an alternative. LiOr is proposed to cross the blood–brain barrier and enter cells more readily than Li2CO3, which will theoretically allow for reduced dosage requirements and ameliorated toxicity concerns. This review addresses the controversial history of LiOr, complete with discussions of experimental and clinical efficacy, putative mechanisms of action, adverse effects, and its potential future in therapy., Li2CO3 is an efficacious therapeutic option in BD, but a troublesome side effect profile limits patient compliance. LiOr may represent an alternative form of lithium that can enter the brain more readily than Li2CO3, which would theoretically allow for maintenance of efficacy at reduced dosages, thereby mitigating non‐compliance concerns by minimizing the incidence of dose‐dependent side effects.

AIM To investigate the anti-apoptotic and anti-oxidant effects of systemic uridine treatment in a rat model of sciatic nerve injury. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-two adult male rats were equally randomized to Sham, Control, U100, and U500 groups. Sham rats received a sham operation by exposing the right sciatic nerve without transection, while those in the Control, U100, and U500 groups underwent right sciatic nerve transection followed by immediate primary anostomosis. Sham and Control groups received saline (0.9% NaCl) injections intraperitoneally (i.p.), while U100 and U500 groups received 100 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg uridine injections (i.p.), respectively, once a day for 7 days after the surgery. Rats in all the groups were sacrificed on the eighth day; sciatic nerve samples were analyzed for apoptosis by Western Blotting and for oxidation parameters including myeloperoxidase (MPO), malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and catalase (CAT) by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). RESULTS Uridine treatment at the dose of 500 mg/kg significantly decreased as apoptosis determined by Caspase-3/Actin ratio and exhibited significant anti-oxidant effects as determined by decreased levels of MPO and MDA as well as increased levels of SOD, GPx, and CAT compared to controls. Uridine at 100 mg/kg was only found to decrease the Caspase-3/Actin ratio, although it significantly decreased MDA and increased CAT levels compared to controls. CONCLUSION Treatment with uridine reduces apoptosis and oxidation in a rat model of sciatic nerve injury dose-dependently. Thus, uridine may be beneficial in peripheral nerve regeneration by exhibiting anti-apoptotic and anti-oxidant effects.

The aim of this study is to compare the video game addiction levels and habit of playing computer games between children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and healthy children. The study group consisted of 100 children aged between 10 and 13 years who were diagnosed with ADHD and who applied to the psychiatry clinic in the province of Istanbul. The control group consisted of 100 healthy children between the ages of 10 and 13 years with no psychiatric diagnoses and were matched with the study group in terms of sociodemographic characteristics. The Personal Information Questionnaire and the Computer Game Addiction Scale for Children (CGASC) were applied to the participants. Children with ADHD had significantly higher levels of video game addiction than healthy children. Video game addiction levels were found to be higher in children who play action, shooter, and racing games than those who did not play them. Furthermore, online gaming has been found to have a significant effect on the level of video game addiction.

Aim: This study aimed to assess uncertainty tolerances and determine the levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and somatization in healthcare workers who fight on the frontline, at the highest risk but seek the least help during the pandemic. Methodology: The data of this cross-sectional study was collected by online delivery of a short form of Health Anxiety Inventory, Patient Health Questionnaire, the Impact of Event Scale, and Demographic Information Form to 106 medical staff consisting of medical doctors and nurses. At the start of the Coronavirus outbreak in Turkey, convenient sampling was used because of the difficulty in reaching healthcare workers. The mean scores of the scales were compared with ANOVA between the study groups. In case of significant differences, Bonferroni posthoc analysis was used to compare the subgroups. Findings: A total of 106 healthcare workers consisted of three groups: the first group; 28 workers who were temporarily not working during data collection; 46 workers working with non-COVID 19 patients in a non-pandemic hospital; 32 subjects working with COVID 19 patients in a pandemic hospital. The working conditions, institution’s type where physicians work for, and whether physicians previously received psychological support showed significant differences between the groups. Conclusions: According to our study results, healthcare workers working with COVID 19 patients reported higher levels of psychological symptoms. This study is crucial to reveal the significant effects of working with COVID 19 patients on healthcare workers’ mental health, especially in the early period of the 2020 epidemic.

Background and aims Effective treatment of high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels has been shown to improve cardiovascular outcomes of patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Herein, we aimed to provide insight to the real-life management of patients with DM in terms of LDL-C goal attainment and adherence to lipid management recommendations. Our objective was also to reveal the reasons of poor LDL-C goal attainment by assessing the perceptions of both physicians and patients. Methods We compared the diabetic and non-diabetic patients from the database of a nationwide registry conducted in cardiology outpatient clinics with regard to the demographic characteristics, educational status, comorbidities, medications, laboratory parameters and LDL-C goal attainment. Also, both the patients and attending physicians were surveyed to analyse perceptions and awareness of hypercholesterolemia. Results Of the 1868 consecutively enrolled patients, 873 (47%) had DM. Proportion of patients on statins was significantly lower in patients with DM (67.8% vs 55.3%; P < .001). The proportion of patients who attained LDL-C targets were lower among the diabetic patients (17.8% vs 15%; P = .06). The most common causes of the discontinuation of statin therapy were negative media coverage about statins (32.1%), and recommendations of physicians to stop the lipid lowering therapy (29.6%). Analysis of the physician survey revealed that the physicians could determine the off-target patients accurately (negative predictive value 98.4%) while the positive predictive value (48.8%) was low. The reasons for not attaining the LDL-C goals in diabetic patients were not prescription of statins (38%) and inadequate (eg low-dose, non-adherent) statin (28.3%) dosages. Conclusions In real-life clinical cardiology practice, diabetic patients are far below the recommended LDL-C treatment goals. High-intensity statin treatment in diabetic population is still avoided because of the concerns about polypharmacy and drug interactions. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare the outcomes of chronic heart failure (HF) patients with reduced ejection fraction (CHFrEF) in the Turkish Research Team in HF (TREAT-HF) registry according to marital status with a specific focus on being the widowed (widow/widower) versus the married.METHODS: TREAT-HF is a network, enrolling CHFrEF with a follow up for HF-related hospitalization (HFrH) and all-cause mortality (ACM). In this cohort, the widowed patients were compared with patients who were married before and after propensity score (PS) matching analysis.RESULTS: There were 723 cHFrEF patients with a complete dataset, including reported marital status at baseline for this analysis. Out of 723 patients with HF, 37 “never-married” and “divorced” patients were excluded from the analysis. Then, out of 686 remaining patients with HF, who had at least one reported marriage in the database, widowed patients with HF (n=124) were compared with married patients (n=562). The mean follow up period was 21±12 months up to 48 months. The widowed patients had a higher risk of HFrH (p=0.047), although ACM remained similar compared to married patients (p=0.054). After PS matching, HFrH remained more frequent among the widowed compared with the married (p=0.039) although ACM yielded similar rates. Of note, it was shown that being a widower (p=0.419) was not linked to increased risk of HFrH during follow up contrary to being a widow (p=0.037) despite similar age, ejection fraction, creatinine, NYHA functional class distribution and a similar rate of life-saving medications.CONCLUSION: PS matching analysis yielded that the widowed had increased the risk for HFrH. Background: Indications and appropriateness of aspirin use have not been well investigated in Turkey. Aims: To investigate the prescription patterns and appropriateness of aspirin in a real-world clinical setting. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: The Appropriateness of Aspirin Use in Medical Outpatients: A Multicenter, Observational Study (ASSOS) is a cross-sectional and multicenter study that included 5007 consecutive patients aged 18 or over who presented to 30 different cardiology outpatient clinics from 14 cities throughout Turkey. Only patients using aspirin (80-325 mg) were included. The study population was divided into 2 groups regarding the use of aspirin: primary prevention (PP) group and secondary prevention (SP) group. The indication of aspirin use was evaluated following the 2016 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the 2016 United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPTF) guidelines in the PP group. Results: A total of 5007 patients (mean age 62.15 +/- 11.05, 39% female) were enrolled. The PP group included 1132 (22.6%) patients, and the SP group included 3875 (77.4%) patients. Of the 1132 patients, inappropriate use of aspirin was determined in 100% of the patients according to the ESC guidelines, and 71% of the patients according to the USPTF guidelines. Adilay, Hüseyin Utku (Balikesir Author), AIM: To investigate the effects of different radiation doses on the development of the neural tube defect in chick embryos using computed tomography (CT), and assess its correlation with survivin and Bcl-2 expressions. MATERIAL and METHODS: A total of 150 chicken eggs were used and grouped into five categories. In Group 1 (n=30), the embryos were not exposed to radiation. In Group 2 (n=30), the embryos were irradiated using lung cancer screening chest CT protocol. In Groups 3 and 4 (n=30 each), the abdominopelvic and adult routine head CT protocols, respectively, were used to irradiate the embryos. In Group 5 (n=30), the embryos were irradiated using adult brain perfusion CT protocol. Subsequently, the embryos were examined under a stereomicroscope to assess the presence of neural tube developmental abnormalities. Moreover, immunohistochemical staining was performed to determine the survivin and Bcl-2 expression levels. RESULTS: The risk of developing neural tube defect increased with the amount of exposed radiation. Moreover, no significant correlation was observed between the survivin and Bcl-2 expression levels and the radiation dose. Introduction: The noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) play a role in biological processes of various cancers including gliomas. The majority of these transcripts are uniquely expressed in differentiated tissues or specific glioma types. Pediatric oligodendroglioma (POG) is a rare subtype of diffuse glioma and accounts for Methods: We investigated the levels of 13 known miRNAs and 6 LncRNAs in tumor samples from 9 patients with primary POG by using RT-PCR and analyzed their association with outcomes. Results: The expression levels of miR-21, miR-106a, miR-10b, and LncRNA NEAT1 were higher, and the expression level of miR-143 was lower in POG tissues compared with normal brain tissues (p = 0.006, p = 0.032, p = 0.034, p = 0.002, and p = 0.001, respectively). High levels of NEAT1 and low expression of miR-143 were associated with decreased probability of short disease-free survival (p = 0.018 and p = 0.022, respectively). Discussion: NEAT1 and miR-143 levels could serve as reciprocal prognostic predictors of disease progression in patients with POG. New treatment models to regulate the expression levels of NEAT1 and miR-143 will bring a new approach to the therapy of POG.

Background Relationship between the frequency of occurrence of bendopnea during the daily life of heart failure (HF) outpatients and clinical outcomes has never been evaluated before. Methods Turkish Research Team-Heart Failure (TREAT-HF) is a network between HF centres, which undertakes multicentric observational studies in HF. Herein, the data including stable 573 HF patients with reduced ejection fraction out of seven HF centres were presented. A questionnaire was filled by the patients, with the question 'Do you experience shortness of breath while tying your shoelace?', assessing the presence and frequency of bendopnea. Results To the question related to bendopnea, 48% of the patients answered 'yes, every time', 31% answered 'yes, sometimes', and 21% answered 'No'. Patients were followed for an average of 24 +/- 14 months, and the patients who answered 'yes, every time' and 'yes, sometimes' to the bendopnea question were found having increased risk for both HF-related hospitalisations (HR:3.2,p < .001- HR:2.8,p = .005) and composite outcome consisting of 'HF-related hospitalisations and all-cause death in the multi-variate analysis (HR:3.1,p < .001- HR:3.0,p < .001). Kaplan Meier analysis for HF-related hospitalisation, all-cause death, and the composite of these were provided for these three groups, yielding significant and graded divergence curves with the best prognosis in 'no' group, with the moderate prognosis in 'sometimes' group, and with the worst prognosis in the 'every time' group. Conclusion For the first time in the literature, our study shows that the increased frequency of bendopnea occurrence in daily life is associated with poor outcomes in HF outpatients. Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS) is a type of high metastatic potential of the fibrosarcomas. Most of the time there is a long interval between tumor presentation and metastasis. We present 2 cases of LGFMS. The first is a 31-year-old female with a mass in anterior aspect of her left thigh, and the other is a 68-year-old female with mass in posterior of her neck. Both cases underwent operation for several times and confirmed as LGFMS histopathologically, there is no exact protocol for postoperative follow-up to detect early metastases according to the relative variety of LGFMS. So informing the patients about the long-standing metastatic potential of their disease is important.

A national profile, frequency data, characteristics of different phenotypes, and risk factors have not yet been well established. The Snapshot Evaluation of Heart Failure Patients in Turkey (SELFIE-TR) was an analysis of a representative sample of HF patients from Turkey. Methods: A total of 23 centers with at least 2 cardiologists from the 12 NUTS-1 regions of Turkey were invited to participate in the research. The contributing centers shared the data of a consecutive enrollment of HF patients, as confirmed by an investigator, on a pre-selected day of each week for the month of October or November of 2015. Results: The mean age of the entire cohort was 63.3 +/- 13.3 years (male/female ratio: 751/303, 71.3%/28.7%). There were 712 acute HF patients and 342 chronic HF patients. Although left ventricular hypertrophy is the most common clinical presentation of cardiac remodeling, cardiovascular complications may also include disturbances of the heart conduction system. The R wave peak time (RWPT) has been previously associated with left ventricular hypertrophy and myocardial ischemia. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between RWPT and echocardiographic parameters in patients with ESRD. Methods This study enrolled 66 patients (29 females, age 57.2 +/- 12.8 years) with ESRD, and 72 controls (37 females, age 55.3 +/- 10.1 years) with similar risk factors. All patients underwent electrocardiography and transthoracic echocardiography. The RWPT was defined as the interval between the onset of the QRS complex and the peak of the R or R' wave. Results There was no significant difference in terms of clinical and demographic parameters between ESRD patients and controls. Left ventricular ejection fraction was similar between the groups. However, left atrial diameter, interventricular septal thickness, posterior wall thickness, left ventricular mass (LVM) and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) were significantly higher in patients with ESRD. Among electrocardiographic parameters, P wave and QRS complex durations and RWPT were significantly higher in patients with ESRD. Prolonged RWPT, increased LVM and LVMI were identified as associates of ESRD. Furthermore, RWPT correlated well with LVM and LVMI. Conclusion The present study demonstrated that RWPT prolonged significantly in patients with ESRD. Furthermore, prolonged RWPT has been associated with increased LVM and LVMI.

Objective To evaluate opinions and applications of physicians related to cardiovascular diseases in their daily practice about current diagnosis, treatment and prophylaxis of coronary artery disease, acute coronary syndrome and hypertension. Method In this study, a questionnaire survey was performed with cardiologists, internists, family physicians and neurologists about the current diagnosis, treatment and prophylaxis in cardiovascular diseases. Results A total of 208 physicians participate in the study. Most of the physicians were working in the specialty of cardiology (88.94%). Majority of physicians (47.6%) had a professional experience of more than ten years and 56.25% of them were working in the training and research hospitals or state hospitals. Conclusion The clinical applications of physicians are mostly in compliance with the treatment guidelines.

Aydın, Gökhan (Balikesir Author), Objective: Myocardial infarction (MI) with non-obstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA) is a relatively new term that is characterized by clinical evidence of MI with normal or near-normal coronary arteries on coronary angiography (QCA). To date, there have been no population-based studies on the prevalence of MINOCA in Turkey. The aim of this nationwide study was to document the prevalence and demographics of MINOCA in a Turkish population. Methods: MINOCA-TR is national, multi-center, prospective, all-comer study that was conducted in 32 hospitals. All consecutive patients who were >= 18 years old, diagnosed with MI according to the Third Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction, and had undergone DCA were included in the study. Patients with stable coronary artery disease, unstable angina pectoris, a history of revascularization, and type 4/5 MI were excluded. Results: A total of 1793 patients who were diagnosed with MI and had undergone QCA were screened between March 2018 and October 2018, of whom 1626 (mean age: 61.5 +/- 12.5 years, 70.7% male) were enrolled from 32 centers. The prevalence of MINOCA was 6.7% (n=109) in the overall study population. Compared with non-MINOCA patients, those with MINOCA were younger, had a higher prevalence of the female gender, and had a history of flu. Introduction Interatrial block (IAB), defined as a conduction delay between the right and left atrium, is manifested on the electrocardiogram as a prolonged P-wave duration. Large number of studies recently have been published regarding the prevalence of IAB and its associations with cardiovascular events. It has been previously reported that myocardial fibrosis may cause conduction delays in hypertensive patients. In this study, we aimed to investigate the echocardiographic determinants of IAB in patients with hypertension. Methods This study enrolled a total of 220 patients [male: 93 (42.3%), mean age: 61.8±7.8 years] with hypertension. Patients with atrial fibrillation were excluded. IAB was defined as P wave duration of ≥120 ms with or without presence of notching. Routinely obtained 12-lead electrocardiography recordings were examined, and patients were divided into two groups as those with and without IAB. All patients were evaluated by transthoracic echocardiography. Results Electrocardiography revealed IAB in 70 patients. The baseline demographic characteristics of the patients with and without IAB were similar in both groups. Left atrial diameter (LAD), interventricular septal thickness, posterior wall thickness, left ventricular mass, left ventricular mass index, and the prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) were found to be significantly increased in hypertensive patients with IAB. Increased LAD (OR=1.082; 95% CI: 1.006–1.164; p=0.034) and LVH (OR=3.051; 95% CI: 1.164–7.994; p=0.023) were found to be independent predictors of IAB. In the receiver operating characteristic curve analyses, LAD values above 38 mm predicted IAB with a sensitivity of 68%, and a specificity of 58% (AUC= 0.678; 95% CI: 0.601–0.754; p Conclusion A significant association exists between the presence of IAB and echocardiographic parameters related to left ventricular hypertrophy and left atrial dilatation in patients with essential hypertension. The presence of IAB may be used as an electrocardiographic marker of cardiac remodelling and myocardial fibrosis in hypertensive patients.

Primary glioblastoma (GB) is the most aggressive type of brain tumors. While mutations in isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) genes are frequent in secondary GBs and correlate with a better prognosis, most primary GBs are IDH wild-type. Recent studies have shown that the long noncoding RNA metastasis associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript-1 (MALAT1) is associated with aggressive tumor phenotypes in different cancers. Our aim was to clarify the prognostic significance of MALAT1 in IDH1/2 wild-type primary GB tumors. We analyzed IDH1/2 mutation status in 75 patients with primary GB by DNA sequencing. The expression of MALAT1 was detected in the 75 primary GB tissues and 5 normal brain tissues using reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). The associations between MALAT1 expression, IDH1/2 mutation status, and clinicopathological variables of patients were determined. IDH1 (R132H) mutation was observed in 5/75 primary GBs. IDH2 (R172H) mutation was not detected in any of our cases. MALAT1 expression was significantly upregulated in primary GB vs. normal brain tissues (p = 0.025). Increased MALAT1 expression in IDH1/2 wild-type primary GBs correlated with patient age and tumor localization (p = 0.032 and p = 0.025, respectively). A multivariate analysis showed that high MALAT1 expression was an unfavorable prognostic factor for overall survival (p = 0.034) in IDH1/2 wild-type primary GBs. High MALAT1 expression may have a prognostic role in primary GBs independent of IDH mutations.

North American incidence of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is expected to more than double over the coming generation. Although genetic factors surrounding the production and clearance of amyloid-β and phosphorylated tau proteins are known to be responsible for a subset of early-onset AD cases, they do not explain the pathogenesis of the far more prevalent sporadic late-onset variant of the disease. It is thus likely that lifestyle and environmental factors contribute to neurodegenerative processes implicated in the pathogenesis of AD. Herein, we review evidence that (1) excess sucrose consumption induces AD-associated liver pathologies and brain insulin resistance, (2) chronic stress overdrives activity of locus coeruleus neurons, leading to loss of function (a common event in neurodegeneration), (3) high-sugar diets and stress promote the loss of neuroprotective sex hormones in men and women, and (4) Western dietary trends set the stage for a lithium-deficient state. We propose that these factors may intersect as part of a “perfect storm” to contribute to the widespread prevalence of neurodegeneration and AD. In addition, we put forth the argument that exercise and supplementation with trace lithium can counteract many of the deleterious consequences associated with excessive caloric intake and perpetual stress. We conclude that lifestyle and environmental factors likely contribute to AD pathogenesis and that simple lifestyle and dietary changes can help counteract their effects.

Objective: Coronary slow flow (CSF) phenomenon is characterized by delayed opacification of coronary vessels in a normal coronary angiogram. Although clinical and pathological features have been previously described, the underlying pathophysiology has not been fully understood yet. Aortic elastic properties have a predictive value in detecting early stages of atherosclerosis. In this study, we aimed to the evaluate the elastic properties of ascending aorta in patients with CSF. Materials and Methods: This single-center study enrolled 50 angiographically identified patients with CSF (23 female, mean age: 51.6 ± 9.7 years), along with 50 controls (19 female, mean age: 53.5 ± 8.7 years) with normal coronary flow. The quantitative measurement of coronary blood flow was performed using the thrombolysis in myocardial infarction frame count method. Aortic elastic parameters including aortic strain, aortic distensibility, aortic stiffness index and aortic compliance were calculated using M-mode echocardiography derived aortic diameters using accepted formulae. Results: There was no significant difference in terms of clinical, demographic, echocardiographic and laboratory parameters between the patients with CSF and the controls. The hemodynamic parameters including aortic pulse pressure, aortic mean pressure, aortic fractional pulse pressure and aortic pulsatility index were similar between patients with CSF and controls. Systolic and diastolic aortic diameters and pulsatile aortic diameter change were similar between the groups. There was also no significant difference in terms of aortic strain, aortic distensibility, aortic stiffness index and aortic compliance between the groups. Conclusion: The results demonstrated that there was no significant difference in terms of hemodynamic parameters and elastic properties of ascending aorta between CSF patients and control group with a similar risk profile and demographic characteristics. Further large scale studies are required to determine the relationship between CSF and elastic properties of aorta.

There has been recent interest to microvasculature changes that are involved in systemic conditions associated with CAD. Retinal microvascular changes which can be easly detected noninvasively may be also a marker for cardiovascular diseases. Our aim in this study was to evaluate the relationship between the retinal findings and coronary artery disease by performing fundoscopic examination in patients diagnosed with CAD Methods: This study enrolled 100 patients (72 female, mean age: 59.3±7.1 years) diagnosed with CAD, along with 100 controls (75 female, mean age: 57.8±8.2 years) who were proved to have normal coronary arteries by coronary angiography. Bilateral fundoscopic examination was performed in all study population. Fundoscopic findings and risk factors for CAD were compared between the groups. There are controversial results regarding NOAC adherence in real-world data and there are no data about NOAC adherence in Turkish population. This study investigated the NOAC adherence based on self-report, factors affecting nonadherence, and the relation of the adherence level with efficacy and safety outcomes. This multicenter cross-sectional study included 2738 patients (59% female) using NOAC (dabigatran, apixaban, and rivaroxaban) due to NVAF for more than 3 months with >30 days of supply between September 1, 2015, and February 28, 2016. To measure the adherence level, an 8-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale was used. The mean age of the patients was 70 +/- 10 years. Of the 2738 patients, 44% were receiving dabigatran, 38% rivaroxaban, and 18% apixaban. A total of 630 (23%) patients had high medication adherence, 712 (26%) moderate adherence, and 1396 (51%) low adherence. Nonadherence had related to stroke (5.6% vs 2.5%, P < .001) and minor (21.2% vs 11.1%, P < .001) and major (6.1% vs 3.7%, P = .004) bleeding rates. The adherence to NOAC was found to be quite low in Turkey. Nonadherence is associated with bleeding and thromboembolic cardiovascular events. Age, taking NOAC twice a day, and the additional noncardiac diseases, depression, and dementia were the independent factors affecting poor medication adherence.

Objective: Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology performed by either transthoracic or transbronchial procedures is an important approach to obtain tumor tissue for histological diagnosis. We investigated the accuracy of FNA in differentiating NSCLCs of adenocarcinoma from squamous cell carcinoma histological types to correlate cytological findings with histological features and immunohistochemistry confirmation in some cases. Methods: From 2010 to 2015, a total of 635 transbronchial needle aspirations or transthoracic needle aspirations were performed. 332 cases were diagnosed as NSCLC, with or without an indication of a specific subtype, while 303 cases were not diagnosed as NSCLC. Out of 332 cases diagnosed as NSCLC, 252 had a histological follow-up. Subsequently, histological samples included 161 surgical resections and 91 biopsies. In cases with histopathological diagnosis accompanied by FNA cytology, an immunohistochemical study was carried out and the diagnostic results of the two methods were compared to each other. Results: The specific subtype of NSCLC was provided in 217 cases (86%) based on cytomorphology which included 115 adenocarcinomas (46%) and 102 squamous cell carcinomas (40%). The diagnosis NSCLC-NOS by FNA was set in 35 cases. At histology, 251 cases (99.6%) were sub-classified: 122 adenocarcinomas (48%), 104 squamous cell carcinomas (41%), 11 large cell carcinomas (4%) , and 14 adenosquamous carcinomas (6%). Patients with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) that are cancer stem-cell-positive (GSC [+]) essentially cannot benefit from anti-angiogenic or anti-invasive therapy. In the present study, the potential anti-angiogenic and anti-invasive effects of Olea europaea (olive) leaf extract (OLE) were tested using GSC (+) tumours. OLE (2 mg/mL) caused a significant reduction in tumour weight, vascularisation, invasiveness and migration (p = 0.0001, p < 0.001, p = 0.004; respectively) that was associated with reducing the expression of VEGFA, MMP-2 and MMP-9. This effect was synergistically increased in combination with bevacizumab. Therefore, our current findings may contribute to research on drugs that inhibit the invasiveness of GBM.

Background: Rehospitalizations with acute coronary syndromes (ACSs) have declined over the last years, but there is a remaining need for potential further reduction of rehospitalization after ACS to determine the most predominant predictors that can guide strategies to reduce re-hospitalizations burden. Aim: This multi-center study aimed to evaluate the demographic, clinical characteristics, and medications of rehospitalized patients who suffered a new cardiac event in 12 months after admission due to ACS. Material and Methods: Patients age >18 years who have been hospitalized between November 1 2017, and April 1 2018, for ACS within12 months before the readmission for a new acute coronary event were enrolled. Results: The present study included a total of 628 (65.9% from Turkey) consecutive patients rehospitalized with ACS (ST-elevation myocardial infarction [STEMI], 23.0%; ACS without ST-elevation [NSTE-ACS], 76.9%) from 15 different countries. The majority of the rehospitalized patients were men (67.9%), and the mean age was 63.1 ± 12.53 years. 406 (64.6%) had typical, 209 (33.2%) of patients had atypical chest pain and 13 (2.07%) had not any chest pain complaint during readmission. 304 (48.41%) of patients were discharged from hospital earlier than 3 days and 107 (17.04%) of patients stayed more than 7 days. The subcategories of first index diagnosis were 227 (36.1%) STEMI; 401 (63.8%) NSTE-ACS. The mean time from index discharge to rehospitalization was 189.25 ± 118 days. 248 (39.4%) patients were re-hospitalized more than once after index discharge. The most common risk factors were diabetes mellitus (471, 75.0%). 175 (27.87%) of patients stopped taking medication before re-hospitalization. Most of the patients (69.4%) had multivessel disease. Conclusion: Several factors identify patients at higher risk of rehospitalization with ACS. Understanding and preventing these causes can prevent rehospitalization and improve their outcome.

Background: Ventricular arrhythmias (VAs)are frequent in hypertensive patients. Myocardial fibrosis is one of the components of left ventricular hypertrophy secondary to hypertension. Fragmented QRS (fQRS)on electrocardiography (ECG)has been shown to be a marker of myocardial fibrosis. In this study, we aimed to investigate the association between fQRS and complex VAs in patients with essential hypertension. Methods: Two hundreds consecutive patients who were diagnosed with hypertension were included in the study. The control group consisted of 153 age and sex matched healthy individuals. ECG and transthoracic echocardiography were performed to all patients. fQRS was defined as additional R' wave or notching/splitting of S wave in two contiguous ECG leads. All patients underwent 24-hour Holter monitoring and VAs were classified using Lown's scoring system. Lown class ?3 VAs were considered as complex VAs. Results: There was no significant difference with respect to age (52 ± 8 vs 52 ± 6 years, p = 0.836)and gender distribution (female: 64% vs 63%, p = 0.907)between the groups. As compared to the healthy individuals, prevalence of fQRS (67% vs 9.2%, p < 0.001)and complex VAs (19% vs 0%, p < 0.001)were significantly higher in patients with hypertension. Furthermore, complex VAs (25.4% vs 6.1%, p = 0.001)were significantly higher in hypertensive patients with fQRS. In multiple logistic regression analysis, left ventricular ejection fraction (OR: 1.11, 95%CI: 1.025 to 1.183; p = 0.006), left ventricular mass index (OR: 1.04, 95%CI: 1.021 to 1.107; p = 0.001)and presence of fQRS (OR: 5.605, 95%CI: 1.427 to 22.019; p = 0.014)were independent predictors for complex VAs. Conclusion: The presence of fQRS may be associated with complex VAs in patients with essential hypertension. OBJECTIVE Heart failure (HF) has a high prevalence and mortality rate in elderly patients; however, there are few studies that have focused on patients older than 80 years. The aim of this study is to describe and compare the age-specific demographics and clinical features of Turkish elderly patients with HF who were admitted to cardiology clinics. METHODS The Epidemiology of Cardiovascular Disease in Elderly Turkish population (ELDER-TURK) study was conducted in 73 centers in Turkey, and it recruited a total of 5694 patients aged 65 years or older. In this study, the clinical profile of the patients who were aged 80 years or older and those between 65 and 79 years with HF were described and compared based on the ejection fraction (EF)-related classification: HFrEF and HFpEF (is considered as EF: ≥50%). RESULTS A total of 1098 patients (male, 47.5%; mean age, 83.5+-3.1 years) aged ≥80 years and 4596 patients (male, 50.2 %; mean age, 71.1+-4.31 years) aged 65-79 years were enrolled in this study. The prevalence of HF was 39.8% for patients who were ≥80 years and 27.1% for patients 65-79 years old. Background: To determine and compare the demographic characteristics, clinical profile and management of patients with heart failure with mid-range ejection fraction (HFmrEF) and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) in a Turkish cohort. Methods: The APOLLON trial (A comPrehensive, ObservationaL registry of heart faiLure with mid-range and preserved ejection fractiON) is an observational and multicenter study conducted in Turkey. Consecutive patients admitted to the cardiology clinics who were at least 18 years of age and had HFmrEF or HFpEF were included (NCT03026114). Results: The study population included 1065 (mean age of 67.1 ± 10.6 years, 54% women) patients from 12 sites in Turkey. Among participants, 246 (23.1%) had HFmrEF and 819 (76.9%) had HFpEF. Compared to patients with HFpEF, those with HFmrEF were more likely to be male (57.7 vs 42.2%; p < 0.001), had higher N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide levels (853 vs 528 pg/ml, p < 0.001), were more likely to have ECG abnormalities (72.4 vs 53.5%, p < 0.001) and hospitalization history for heart failure (28 vs 18.6%; p = 0.002). HFmrEF patients were more likely to use ?-blockers (69.9 vs 55.2%, p < 0.001), aldosterone receptor antagonists (24 vs 14.7%, p = 0.001), statins (37 vs 23%, p < .001), and loop diuretics (39.8 vs 30.5%, p = 0.006) compared to patients with HFpEF. Conclusions: The results of APOLLON study support that the basic characteristics and etiology of HFmrEF are significantly different from HFpEF. Aim To determine the efficacy and safety of microvascular decompression (MVD) for hemifacial spasm (HFS) by retrospectively reviewing our results. Material and methods A total of 55 patients who underwent MVD in our clinic between 2003 and 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. Clinical outcome results, recurrence rates, and surgical complications were noted. Results Thirty-six patients were female (65%). The mean age of the patients was 51.3 years. The mean duration of the complaint was 46.4 months. In 45 patients (82%), HFS was completely resolved within the first 6 months after the surgery. Five patients (9%) with recurrent symptoms were reoperated within the first year of the surgery. HFS symptoms of five patients (9%) completely ceased initially, but started again and reoperation was required due to failure of alternative treatments. Delayed facial nerve palsy and hearing loss were noted in one patient for each (2%). Cerebrospinal fluid leak was observed in two patients (4%). No mortality was observed in this series. Conclusion MVD is a safe and effective option for patients with HFS that is resistant to medical treatment.

Methods: This is an observational, multicentre and cross-sectional study conducted in Turkey (NCT03026114). Consecutive 1065 (mean age of 67.1 +/- 10.6 years) patients admitted to the cardiology outpatient units with HFmrEF and HFpEF were included. Results: Participants aged 80 and older (n = 123, 11.5%) were more likely to be female (66.7% vs 52.5%, P = 0.003), had a higher prevalence of atrial fibrillation (49.6% vs 34%, P = 0.001), and anaemia (46.3% vs 33.4%, P = 0.005) than those who were younger than 80. N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide levels were higher in those aged 80 and older than in those younger than 80 (1037 vs 550 pg/ml, P < 0.001). The prescription rates of HF medications (including in ACE-Is/ARBs, beta-blockers, MRAs, digoxin, ivabradine and diuretics) were similar (P > 0.05) in both groups. Octogenarians did not significantly differ from younger patients in the prevalence of HFmrEF (24.4% vs 22.9%) and HFpEF (75.6% vs 77.1%). Coronary artery disease was associated with HFmrEF (P < 0.05), whereas atrial fibrillation was associated with HFpEF (P < 0.05) in octogenarians. Conclusions: This study revealed that nearly 12% of the individuals with HFmrEF and HFpEF in this real-world sample were aged 80 and older. Participants aged 80 and older are more likely to be female and have more comorbidities than those who were younger than 80. However, HF medication profiles were similar in both groups. This study also showed that associated factors with HFmrEF and HFpEF were differ in octogenarians.

In present study we aimed to evaluate the lifestyle, management of risk factors and medical treatment for secondary protection in elderly patients with known coronary heart disease (CHD). Methods: ELDERTURK is a non-interventional, multi-centered, observational study, which included total of 5694 elderly patients (>65 years) from 50 centers in Turkey. In this study elderly patients from the ELDERTURK population with known CHD were evaluated for cardiovascular risk factors, comorbidities and medication usage. Results: A total of 2976 (52.3% of study) out of 5694 patients included in the ELDERTURK study were evaluated. All had known CHD with a mean age of 73.4 +/- 6.2 years and 60.3% were male. 13.0% of patients were smokers, 42.4% were overweight and 21.1% were obese. Only 23.6% of patients reported to do regular exercise, 73.4% had history of hypertension, 47.4% had dyslipidemia and 33.9% had diabetes mellitus.
