Background To date, there has not been sufficient experimental evidence to demonstrate the pharmacological effect of secretolytic and mucolytic drugs. Methods Scintigraphic studies to detect the mucociliary clearance in the maxillary sinus before and after application of the secretolytic drug Gelomyrtol forte were performed on four healthy persons and one patient after sinus surgery. The most important parameter was the mucociliary transport velocity of the "region of interest-maxillary sinus" and the increase of radioactivity accumulated in a tampon placed in the middle meatus of the nose. Measurements were done with a gamma-camera, 99 m Technetium-sulphurcolloid was used as the radiopharmacentical. A dose of 1 MBq in 0.2 ml NaCl-solution was injected into the maxillary sinus. Results The results show a clear increase of mucociliary transport velocity in the maxillary sinus after intake of secretolytics in connection with an increase of radioactivity in the tampon. Discussion The results can be explained by the secretolytic and secretomotoric effects of the investigated drug. Conclusion The study reveals that ethereal oils have secretolytic effects and also have a pharmacological effect on the mucociliary apparatus.

We compared the glomerular filtration rate as measured by a single-injection inulin clearance with that measured by a standard isotope method with 99mTc-labeled diethylenetriaminopentaacetic acid in 21 subjects with glomerular filtration rates greater than 35 mL/min. After a bolus injection of 5 g of inulin, blood samples were taken 20, 45, 90, 120, 145, 180, and 240 min afterwards. Inulin was measured by optimized chemical or enzymatic methods of high analytical sensitivity to determine inulin at low concentrations. We used the one-compartment model and inulin concentrations measured at two sampling times to calculate the glomerular filtration rate from the data of the disappearance curve of inulin. Inulin concentrations at 20 and 240 min after injection of the inulin bolus were suited to estimate glomerular filtration rate by this procedure, resulting in values (y) comparable with those obtained by isotope technique (x). The relationship to the isotope technique was characterized by the equation y = +4.80 mL/min + 0.92x (r = 0.97). The single-injection inulin clearance determination can detect a decrease of glomerular filtration rate at the beginning of kidney damage, given that our study included subjects with glomerular filtration rates greater than 35 mL/min. We conclude that the glomerular filtration rate can be determined by analyzing only two blood samples after a bolus injection of inulin.

Forty-nine patients were treated with either 3 x 75 MBq 89Sr or saline as placebo. Analysis of results 1 to 3 years after therapy revealed the ineffectiveness of 89Sr to relieve pain from metastases. Unexpectedly, a higher survival rate was found after Sr application (46% vs 4% after 2 years). Covariate analysis underlines the effect of 89Sr therapy on life expectation.

ISSN 0804–4643 Using sufficiently sensitive and precise assays, we systematically investigated the correlation between thyrotropin, thyroglobulin, index of free thyroxine and index of free triiodothyronine after different doses of thyroxine (25, 50, 100, 150 μg), which were administered daily for 10 days to individuals with normal thyroid function and in a control group. Analysis of the data using relative median values expressing changes to basal values before administration of thyroxine yielded the following results: (i) thyrotropin and thyroglobulin decreased monoexponentially, depending on the doses of thyroxine administered; (ii) the extent of their decrease showed a linear correlation with the dose of thyroxine administered and was greater for thyrotropin than for thyroglobulin; (iii) the relative velocity of their decrease increased monoexponentially with the dose of thyroxine and did not differ between thyrotropin and thyroglobulin. These results provide strong evidence for a clear quantitative reaction of the feedback mechanism and confirm that the secretion of thyroglobulin is a physiological process dependent on thyrotropin. The high intra-individual variations obtained for thyrotropin were probably due to its pulsatile secretion. D.
