Differences in physical activity (PA) might lead to long-term weight control. Studies on inverse relations between PA and changes in fatness among adolescents are limited. This paper examined the effect of PA on adolescents’ changing body fatness over 5 years in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). Two hundred thirty-five boys and 247 girls who have had skinfold thickness measurements in the baseline survey in 2004 were selected to follow yearly. We estimated PA as the average number of accelerometers’ counts/h. Slopes of triceps, sub-scapular skinfolds and BMI were calculated and classified as increasing or stable/decreasing. To assess the effects of the low level of activity (i.e. below the median of the average number of counts) on the fat gain (i.e. increasing slopes), relative risk and 95 % CI were estimated using Poisson regression. The average number of counts/h in boys (7·8) was significantly higher than that in girls (5·0) (P < 0·001). On average, active girls still gained 0·51 mm in triceps skinfold (TSF) over 5 years, while active boys lost 0·12 mm. After controlling for baseline energy intake, baseline triceps and baseline age, inactive adolescents were 1·39 times higher than active ones to increase the slope of triceps (95 % CI 1·19, 1·63). The risk ratio was 1·62 for those with more body fat at baseline. In general, inactive students gained substantially more subcutaneous fat, especially in their TSF, than more active ones. Thus, strategies to prevent adolescent obesity in HCMC should consider the important role of PA to control this problem in adolescents effectively.

The present study examined cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between total and segmental subcutaneous tissue thicknesses from ultrasonography (US) and total and segmental fat mass (FM) estimates from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Traditional US FM estimates were also examined. Twenty resistance-trained males (mean ± SD; age: 22.0 ± 2.6 years; body mass: 74.8 ± 11.5 kg; DXA fat: 17.5 ± 4.5%) completed a 6-week supervised resistance training programme while consuming a hypercaloric diet. Pre- and post-intervention body composition was assessed by DXA and B-mode US. Data were analysed using Pearson's correlation (r), Lin's correlation coefficient (CCC), paired t-tests, Wilcoxon signed-rank tests and Bland-Altman analysis, as appropriate. Cross-sectionally, correlations were observed between total DXA FM and total subcutaneous tissue thickness (r = 0.88). Longitudinally, a correlation was observed between total DXA FM changes and total subcutaneous tissue changes (r = 0.49, CCC = 0.38). Correlations of similar magnitudes were observed for the upper body and trunk estimates, but DXA FM changes were unrelated to subcutaneous tissue changes for the lower body and arms. Cross-sectionally, US 2-compartment FM and DXA FM were correlated (r = 0.91, CCC = 0.83). Longitudinally, a weaker correlation was observed (r = 0.47, CCC = 0.33). In summary, longitudinal associations between US and DXA are weaker than cross-sectional relationships; additionally, correlations between US subcutaneous tissue and whole-body DXA FM appear to be driven by the trunk region rather than appendages. Reporting raw skinfold thicknesses rather than FM estimates alone may improve the utility of techniques based on subcutaneous tissue thickness, such as US and skinfolds.

Despite the known association between muscle mass/function and malnutrition-related mortality in upper gastrointestinal (UGI) cancer, no comprehensive study to determine the impact of muscle mass-dominant nutritional status on cancer prognosis has been conducted. The present study aimed to investigate the prognostic significance of integrated muscle mass and function in UGI cancer.Between July 2013 and March 2018, we enrolled 2546 cancer patients with risks of malnutrition (Nutrition Risk Screening 2002, ≥3 points) from a multicenter cohort study and split 527 patients with primary UGI cancer into an internal validation group. We prospectively performed instant nutritional assessment and recorded all general clinical characteristics of the participants, such as weight loss, body mass index, anthropometric measurements of muscle mass and function, dietary intake conditions, and disease burden and/or inflammation status based on the validated tools. Prognostic analyses were performed with post-assessment overall survival (OS).According to the entire set, UGI cancer was identified as the dominant risk factor for disease burden and inflammation criteria (hazard ratio (HR), 2.08, 95% confidence interval (Cl), 1.81-2.39, P 0.001). Integrated muscle mass/function analysis with validated cutoff values showed that hand grip strength/weight followed by triceps skinfold thickness and maximum calf circumference are the most potent predictors. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that reduced muscle mass/function (74.8%) and dietary intake (66.2%) independently affect OS of patients with UGI cancer. Significant associations were found between the reduced muscle mass/reduced dietary intake and the shortest OS (HR, 4.48; 95% Cl, 3.07-6.53; P 0.001). Appending subgroups of muscle mass/function and dietary intake to the pre-existing risk model increased the efficiency of the time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curve analysis for OS in UGI cancer, particularly within 2 years of instant nutritional assessment.Impaired muscle mass/function adversely affects the near-term prognosis in patients with UGI cancer. Objective: The primary purpose of the current study was to establish Turkishsmoothed centile charts and Lambda, Mu, Sigma (LMS) tables for four-site skinfoldthickness based on a population-based sample, and secondary purpose was toelaborate a reference for the percentage of body fat.Design: A cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted between Januaryand May 2017. Triceps, biceps and subscapular, suprailiac skinfold thicknesseswere measured using Holtain skinfold caliper. Age- and gender-specific percentilevalues were determined with the LMS method, and body fat percentage was calculatedusing the Westrate and Deurenberg equation.Setting: Afyonkarahisar province in Turkey.Participants: The current study was conducted on 4565, 6–18-year-old students.Results: The triceps, biceps and subscapular skinfolds of the girls were higher thanthe boys. From the age of seven, the sum of four skinfold thicknesses of the girlswas more than those of the boys. This difference became more evident after theage of 12. Although fat percentages of girls showed a fluctuating change, itdecreased with the age in boys. Westrate and Deurenberg equation fat percentagesof girls until adolescence were lower than boys, but increased after 12 years of ageand exceeded that of boys.Conclusions: The current study has provided sex- and age-specific reference valuesfor skinfold thickness and has shown that obesity in girls is higher than in boysin schoolchildren in Afyonkarahisar. The current study has also shown that skinfoldthickness measurements are a valuable tool for screening obesity in children.

Due to the lack of validated methods of muscle assessment, sarcopenia is not well described in critically ill children. The main objectives of this study were to assess muscle wasting using point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) and anthropometry, as well as its association with nutrition delivery in PICU.This was a single-center, prospective cohort study, including consecutive children admitted to the PICU. Quadriceps femoris muscle thickness (QFMT) and anthropometrics measurements were performed at admission and then weekly until the 14th day of the PICU stay. The three moments of assessment were defined as T0 (baseline), T1 (7th day) and T2 (14th day). For analysis purposes, participants assessed only in T0 and T1 were defined as Subgroup 1, while those assessed in T0, T1 and T2 were defined as Subgroup 2. Actual total daily intake was determined by patient intake records until discharge or during the first 14 full days of PICU admission.In all, 119 patients were included with a median age of 12.0 months (IQR 4.0-42.5). In Subgroup 1, QFMT significantly decreased between T0 and T1 (-12.93 ± 14.07 %; p 0.001), and the same was observed in Subgroup 2 (-13.81 ± 13.05 %; p 0.001). However, no differences in QFMT was observed between T1 and T2 (-2.06 ± 13.80 %; p = 0.936). Triceps skinfold thickness, mid-upper arm circumference, and upper arm muscle area presented a similar pattern of changes between periods in both groups. Decrease of QFMT at T1 was significantly correlated with the cumulative protein deficit in both subgroups, but not with the cumulative energy deficit.Substantial muscle wasting occurs early in critically ill children and may be related to insufficient protein delivery. The aim of this study was to examine the differences between selected lifestyle and socioeconomic parameters among preschool (3–7 years of age) children of differing adiposity status. The study was conducted from February to June 2018 in 20 randomly selected kindergartens in Kraków, Poland. Triceps, biceps, subscapular, suprailiac, abdominal and calf skinfold thicknesses were measured. The sum of all six skinfolds was calculated and the children were subsequently characterized by low (≤–1 SD [standard deviation]), normal (–1 to 1 SD) or high body fat (≥1 SD). Socioeconomic and lifestyle characteristics were obtained using a questionnaire filled out by the children’s parents or legal guardians. Preschool children in the high adiposity category had, on average, fewer siblings and longer screen time; additionally, their parents had lower education and more often worked in manual jobs, in comparison to the children in the low and average adiposity categories. In conclusion, it was observed that children in different adiposity categories varied in terms of some socioeconomic as well as lifestyle characteristics. Knowledge regarding the influence that those factors can have on the metabolic health of children is essential for children’s present as well as future well-being. Moreover, it can help health care professionals and parents decide what intervention and/ or preventive measures should be undertaken to ensure the best possible outcomes, as the development of successful obesity prevention strategies should rely on evidence-based information. Nonetheless, future research examining the issue of factors influencing the metabolic health of children, as well as these outcomes later in life, is crucial. Well-planned studies including a large number of individuals, as well as longitudinal research, will be particularly beneficial in this regard.

The present study evaluated whether fat mass assessment using the triceps skinfold (TSF) thickness provides additional prognostic value to the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) framework in patients with lung cancer (LC). We performed an observational cohort study including 2672 LC patients in China. Comprehensive demographic, disease and nutritional characteristics were collected. Malnutrition was retrospectively defined using the GLIM criteria, and optimal stratification was used to determine the best thresholds for the TSF. The associations of malnutrition and TSF categories with survival were estimated independently and jointly by calculating multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HR). Malnutrition was identified in 808 (30·2 %) patients, and the best TSF thresholds were 9·5 mm in men and 12 mm in women. Accordingly, 496 (18·6 %) patients were identified as having a low TSF. Patients with concurrent malnutrition and a low TSF had a 54 % (HR = 1·54, 95 % CI = 1·25, 1·88) greater death hazard compared with well-nourished individuals, which was also greater compared with malnourished patients with a normal TSF (HR = 1·23, 95 % CI = 1·06, 1·43) or malnourished patients without TSF assessment (HR = 1·31, 95 % CI = 1·14, 1·50). These associations were concentrated among those patients with adequate muscle mass (as indicated by the calf circumference). Additional fat mass assessment using the TSF enhances the prognostic value of the GLIM criteria. Using the population-derived thresholds for the TSF may provide significant prognostic value when used in combination with the GLIM criteria to guide strategies to optimise the long-term outcomes in patients with LC.

Background and Aims The incidence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasing in young populations. However, there are inadequate data regarding diagnosis of NAFLD. We aimed to validate three scoring systems against a previous standard of suprailiac skinfold thickness for diagnosing NAFLD in population-based adolescents. Methods Seventeen-year-old adolescents (n = 899), participating in the Raine Study, attended a cross-sectional follow-up. NAFLD was diagnosed using liver ultrasound. Scores for Fatty liver index (FLI), Hepatic Steatosis Index (HSI) and Zhejiang University index (ZJU index) were calculated. Diagnostic accuracy of these diagnostic tests was evaluated through discrimination and calibration. Results NAFLD was diagnosed 9% in males and 15% in females. The three scoring systems demonstrated better discrimination performance for NAFLD in males (AUC was FLI:0.82, HSI: 0.83 and ZJU index: 0.83) compared to females (AUC was FLI: 0.67, HSI: 0.67 and ZJU index: 0.67). Suprailiac skinfold performed better than the scoring systems (overall AUC: 0.82; male AUC:0.88; female AUC:0.73). FLI had best calibration performance. Conclusion Suprailiac skinfold thickness was a better predictor of ultrasound-diagnosed NAFLD than the three diagnostic scoring systems investigated. The higher performance characteristics of the algorithmic scoring systems in males compared with females may have implications for use in population assessments.

Background The "Foafoaga O le Ola (Beginning of Life)" study is a prospective birth cohort of n = 160 Samoan mother-infant dyads established in 2017-2018. A primary study aim is to explore how a missense variant at CREBRF rs373863828 impacts growth in early life, given its association with increased body size but lower risk of diabetes in adult Samoans. Here, we examine body size and composition by genotype among toddlers aged 18.7-24.5 months. Methods Height, weight, head circumference, mid-upper-arm circumference, and abdominal circumference, as well as subscapular, triceps, iliac crest and thigh skinfold thickness were measured among 107 toddlers with known rs373863828 genotype; 42 of these toddlers completed dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans from which body composition (total body less head fat mass, lean mass, bone mass, % fat mass and % fat-free mass) was estimated. Results After controlling for sex and age, toddlers with at least one copy of the CREBRF minor allele (AA/AG) were 1.31 cm taller (SE = 0.64, p = 0.045) than toddlers with the GG genotype. Conclusion Whether greater linear growth in early childhood could contribute to the metabolically protective effects associated with the CREBRF variant in adulthood should be explored in future studies.

Purpose: To verify the reciprocal longitudinal relationships between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), percentage body fat (%body fat), and metabolic syndrome in Brazilian primary school students. Method: This longitudinal study involved 420 children and adolescents followed for 3 years (2011–2014). The continuous Metabolic Syndrome (cMetSyn) score was calculated by summing adjusted z scores of glucose, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio, triglycerides, and waist circumference. The CRF was assessed using running/walking tests, and %body fat was assessed through sex-specific 2-site skinfold thickness. Cross-lagged panel models were used to analyze longitudinal reciprocal relationships between CRF and %body fat with cMetSyn. Results: Results indicated that 2011 %body fat significantly predicted both 2014 CRF scores and 2014 cMetSyn scores (P P P = .103). Furthermore, 2011 cMetSyn predicted 2014 %body fat (P = .002). The model explained 36%, 48%, and 37% of the variance in 2014 CRF, %body fat, and cMetSyn, respectively. Conclusion: The results suggest a reciprocal inverse relationship between %body fat and metabolic syndrome risk and that %body fat may play a more important role in the risk of developing metabolic syndrome compared with CRF.

AIM To assess different techniques to measure body composition in paediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry as a reference method. We hypothesised that a three-compartment model may demonstrate superiority over other methods as skinfold thickness equations and bioelectrical impedance analysis. METHODS Body composition was assessed using skinfold thickness equations, bioelectrical impedance analysis and the three-compartment model. Data obtained with these methods were compared to the results obtained by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Statistical analysis was performed using Spearman's correlation and Bland-Altman's limits of agreement method. RESULTS Twenty-one paediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease were included: 11 females and 10 males; mean age for the entire group: 14.3 years, range 12-16 years. In children with inflammatory bowel disease, skinfold thickness equations, bioelectrical impedance analysis and the three-compartment model showed reliable measurements with small differences in the percentage of total body fat and good limits of agreements. CONCLUSION The assessment of body composition using bioelectrical impedance analysis provides a valid and accurate method in children with inflammatory bowel disease as compared to dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. In the future, superiority of 3-compartment model in research and clinical settings of nutritional intervention and disease status in children with inflammatory bowel disease remains to be demonstrated.

Background: Kinanthropometry offers to exercise and health professionals a standardized procedure of acquiring surface anatomical measurements that might be used to track changes in body composition. Aim: To describe simple anthropometric indices to monitor body composition changes in amateur and elite athletes, and to provide reference values during the competition phase. Methods: A search of articles indexed in PubMed/MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, Cochrane, and SciELO databases using the string body composition AND (anthropometric OR skinfolds OR circumferences OR girth OR estimation equation) AND “body fat”. Inclusion criteria were: quantitative and/or qualitative research published between 2009 and 2020, written in English or Spanish, reporting simple anthropometric indices that included skinfolds, girths, or basic measures in amateur and elite athletes. Results: A total of 51 studies (Price’s index = 66.4%) met all the inclusion criteria and were included in this scoping review. Contrary to the frequent practice, the use of a regression equation might not be accurate to evaluate body composition. To avoid this, anthropometrists should base their analysis on the absolute values of the sum of skinfolds (∑S) and related variables, such as skinfold-corrected girths and lean mass index. While not definitive, because further research is required, the practical recommendations and updated reference values in competition phase provided by this review would contribute to the accurate identification of body composition changes. Conclusions: ∑S and lean mass index have been shown to be valid for monitoring changes in fat mass and fat-free mass, respectively. More research is needed to derive the lean mass index-specific coefficient for each sports population.

Importance Childhood and adolescence are critical periods for lifelong bone mineral accrual, but few studies have determined the impact of childhood adiposity on adult bone density. Objective To determine the long‐term impact of childhood adiposity on adult areal bone mineral density (aBMD) and the effect of adult adiposity on this relationship. Methods We conducted a longitudinal study of 1156 adults (56.3% men), for whom skinfold thickness (SFT) had been measured during childhood (6–18 years) and fat mass percentage (FMP) and aBMD were measured during adulthood (29–43 years). Adult aBMD in the lumbar spine (LS), femoral neck (FN), arms, and legs was measured using dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry. The direct effect of childhood SFT and its indirect effect through adult FMP on adult aBMD were estimated using general linear regression and a causal steps approach. Results Significant positive associations between childhood SFT and adult aBMD were found in the LS in men (β = 0.089, P = 0.044) and in all the skeletal sites in women. With respect to the adult fat–bone relationship, high adult FMP was associated with low aBMD in most of the sites in men, but with high FN aBMD in women (β = 0.144, P = 0.002). Moreover, suppressive effects of adult FMP on the associations between childhood SFT and adult aBMD in the LS (−34.8%) and legs (−67.1%) of men, and a positive effect on the FN aBMD in women (17.0%) were identified. Interpretation Childhood adiposity appears to have a positive long‐term effect on adult aBMD, which may be reduced by adiposity in adult men but reinforced by adiposity in adult women., This longitudinal study presented sexual discrepancies in fat‐bone relationship from a life course perspective. Objective The aim of the present study was to evaluate the agreement between the most used skinfold thickness equations with multi-frequency bioimpedance analysis in the prediction of body fat levels in children. Method A cross-sectional study of healthy Brazilian community-dwelling individuals. The anthropometric assessment included height, body mass, arm circumference, and waist circumference. The percentage of body fat was obtained by measuring skinfold thickness equations and using bioimpedance analysis, and skinfold thickness was measured using a scientific skinfold caliper. Bland–Altman plot analysis was used to verify the agreement between the methods. Results There were 439 children and adolescents evaluated, with a mean age of 11.6 ± 3.7 years. The mean body fat by bioimpedance analysis was 22.8% ± 10.4%, compared to 22.4% ± 8.8% by Slaughter (1), 20.4% ± 9.2% by Slaughter (2), 19.6% ± 4.4% by Goran, and 24.7% ± 10.0% by Huang equations. Bland–Altman plot analysis revealed limits of agreement greater than 8% between the bioimpedance analysis approach and equations, exceeding the clinically acceptable limit predefined a priori. None of the equations had good agreement with bioimpedance analysis. Conclusion It was concluded that skinfold thickness and bioimpedance analysis should not be used interchangeably in children and adolescents.

Leg length in humans is considered to be an indicator of the long-term impact of quality of childhood living conditions and nutritional status. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the magnitude of association of percentage body fat (PBF) with relative subischial leg length (RSLL), adjusting for age, sex and body mass index (BMI), among adolescents and adults in a population of poor socioeconomic background in India. Data were taken from a cross-sectional study conducted in 2010–2014 among the Limbu community of Darjeeling, West Bengal – an indigenous community with poor socioeconomic background, low literacy rate, low income and inadequate living conditions. The study villages were located in the Himalayan and sub-Himalayan regions of Darjeeling. The present study sample comprised 97 adolescents aged 16–19 years (47 boys, 50 girls) and 260 adults aged 20–39 years (135 men, 125 women). AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: We aimed to examine associations of newborn anthropometric measures with childhood glucose metabolism with the hypothesis that greater newborn birthweight, adiposity and cord C-peptide are associated with higher childhood glucose levels and lower insulin sensitivity. METHODS: Data from the international, multi-ethnic, population-based Hyperglycemia and Adverse Pregnancy Outcome (HAPO) Study and the HAPO Follow-Up Study were used. The analytic cohort included 4155 children (mean age [SD], 11.4 [1.2] years; 51.0% male). Multiple linear regression was used to examine associations of primary predictors, birthweight, newborn sum of skinfolds (SSF) and cord C-peptide, from HAPO with continuous child glucose outcomes from the HAPO Follow-Up Study. RESULTS: In an initial model that included family history of diabetes and maternal BMI during pregnancy, birthweight and SSF demonstrated a significant, inverse association with 30 min and 1 h plasma glucose levels. In the primary model, which included further adjustment for maternal sum of glucose z scores from an oral glucose tolerance test during pregnancy, the associations were strengthened, and birthweight and SSF were inversely associated with fasting, 30 min, 1 h and 2 h plasma glucose levels. Objective: Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) represents a proportion of visceral fat distributed around the heart. Measurement of EAT thickness is important for the diagnosis of visceral obesity. Skinfold thickness has been used in both clinical and research settings for visceral obesity diagnosis. The aim of this study is to evaluate the correlation between skinfold and EAT thickness in healthy professional male soccer players. Material and Methods: A prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted with twenty professional male soccer players (mean age, 22.50+2.80 years). Anthropometric data was collected for all patients and skinfold measurements were obtained with a caliper. EAT thickness was assessed in parasternal long axis view by transthoracic echocardiography. Results: Mean body mass index and waist circumference were 22.81±2.1 kg/m2 and 78.80±6.59 cm, mean EAT thickness and body fat ratio were 3.45±0.94 mm and 10.89±4.04%, respectively. EAT thickness was significantly correlated with body fat percentage (r=0.518, p=0.019). EAT thickness was also significantly correlated with age, body mass index, body surface area and waist circumference. EAT thickness did not showed any correlation with systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Conclusion: This study has shown that there was a relationship between body fat ratio and EAT thickness in male soccer players who are considered to be healthy and physically fit.

Nutrition assessment is multidimensional; however, much of the literature examining the nutritional status of children with cerebral palsy (CP) focuses on a single dimension.The aim of the study was to evaluate nutritional status in children and adolescents with CP by comparing results from the Pediatric Subjective Global Nutrition Assessment (SGNA) with results from traditional anthropometric measures.This study was a cross-sectional observational study.This study was conducted in a tertiary hospital outpatient setting in Brisbane, Australia, from February 2017 to March 2018. A total of 89 children (63 boys) with CP aged between 2 and 18 years of age were included. All Gross Motor Function Classification System levels were observed. The majority of children were in Gross Motor Function Classification System I and II (57, 64%) compared with Gross Motor Function Classification System III to V (32, 36%). Children with feeding tubes and those acutely unwell or hospitalized were excluded.Children were classified as well nourished, moderately malnourished, or severely malnourished by dietitians using the SGNA. Weight, height, body mass index (BMI), triceps skinfold thickness, subscapular skinfold thickness, and mid upper arm circumference were measured and converted to z scores to account for age and sex differences. Moderate malnutrition was defined by z scores -2.00 to -2.99 and severe malnutrition as ≤-3.00 z scores.Multinomial logistic analyses were used to compare results from the SGNA and each single measurement. Continuous outcomes were transformed into z scores. Agreement was assessed with 2 categories: not malnourished and malnourished. Comparison statistics included percent agreement, sensitivity, and specificity.More children were classified as moderately or severely malnourished by SGNA than any of the anthropometric z score cutoffs. The majority of children were well nourished (n = 63) with 20 (22%) moderately malnourished and 6 (7%) severely malnourished by SGNA. The SGNA classified 11 children as malnourished that were not classified as malnourished by BMI. Children with moderate or severe malnutrition by SGNA had lower weight (P.001, P.001), BMI (P.001, P.001), mid upper arm circumference (P.001, P.001), triceps skinfold thickness (P = .01, P = .007), and subscapular skinfold thickness (P = .005, P = .02) z scores than well-nourished children.The SGNA identified more potentially malnourished children including children classified as well nourished by the single measurements such as BMI, height, and weight. The SGNA provided a clinically useful multidimensional approach to nutrition assessment for children with CP.

Muscles serve as a critical regulator of locomotion and damping, resulting in changes of soft tissue vibration. However, whether muscle fibre compositions of different individuals will cause different extents of soft tissue vibration during gait is unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the differences in lower extremity vibration frequencies among power-trained and non-power-trained athletes during walking and running. Twelve weightlifting athletes were assigned to the power-trained group and twelve recreational runners were assigned to the non-power-trained group. Accelerometers were used to detect soft tissue compartment vibration frequencies of the rectus femoris (RF) and gastrocnemius medialis (GMS) during walking and running. Results indicated that power-trained athletes, as compared to the non-power-trained, induced significantly (p 0.05) higher vibration frequencies in their soft tissue compartments during walking and running. This suggests that power-trained athletes, who have higher ratios of fatigable fast-twitch muscle fibres, may have induced higher soft tissue compartment vibration frequencies. As a result, there is a likelihood that power-trained athletes may recruit more fatigable fast-twitch muscle fibres during muscle tuning, causing dysfunctions during prolonged exercises.

Objective:Stunting (height-for-age < −2 sd) is one of the forms of undernutrition and is frequent among children of low- and middle-income countries. But stunting perse is not a synonym of undernutrition. We investigated association between body height and indicators of energetic undernutrition at three critical thresholds for thinness used in public health: (1) BMI SDS < −2; (2) mid-upper arm circumference divided by height (MUAC (mm) × 10/height (cm) < 1·36) and (3) mean skinfold thickness (SF) < 7 mm and to question the reliability of thresholds as indicators of undernutrition.Design:Cross-sectional study; breakpoint analysis.Setting:Rural and urban regions of Indonesia and Guatemala – different socio-economic status (SES).Participants:1716 Indonesian children (6·0–13·2 years) and 3838 Guatemalan children (4·0–18·9 years) with up to 50 % stunted children.Results:When separating the regression of BMI, MUAC or SF, on height into distinguishable segments (breakpoint analysis), we failed to detect relevant associations between height, and BMI, MUAC or SF, even in the thinnest and shortest children. For BMI and SF, the breakpoint analysis either failed to reach statistical significance or distinguished at breakpoints above critical thresholds. For MUAC, the breakpoint analysis yielded negative associations between MUAC/h and height in thin individuals. Only in high SES Guatemalan children, SF and height appeared mildly associated with R2 = 0·017.Conclusions:Currently used lower thresholds of height-for-age (stunting) do not show relevant associations with anthropometric indicators of energetic undernutrition. We recommend using the catch-up growth spurt during early re-feeding instead as immediate and sensitive indicator of past undernourishment. We discuss the primacy of education and social-economic-political-emotional circumstances as responsible factors for stunting.

Summary Background & aims The relationship between malnutrition risk and intramuscular adipose tissue of the quadriceps in older inpatients remains unclear, although a high rate of malnutrition risk has been observed in these patients. Understanding this relationship would be necessary for a management plans for older inpatients. This study aimed to examine the relationship between malnutrition risk and intramuscular adipose tissue of the quadriceps in older inpatients. Methods Three-hundred and twenty-three older inpatients participated in this cross-sectional study. Malnutrition risk was assessed using the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI). Intramuscular adipose tissue of the quadriceps was assessed based on ultrasound echo intensity. Higher echo-intensity indicates greater amounts of intramuscular adipose tissue. Multiple regression analysis was used to identify the factors that were independently associated with quadriceps echo intensity. GNRI, age, sex (male = 1, female = 2), number of medications, C-reactive protein, updated Charlson comorbidity index, Food Intake Level Scale, the subcutaneous fat thickness of the thigh, motor-Functional Independence Measures, and length of hospital stay were set as the independent variables. Results GNRI (β = −0.18), age (β = 0.18), sex (β = 0.22), number of medications (β = 0.09), the subcutaneous fat thickness of the thigh (β = −0.29), motor-FIM (β = −0.12), and length of hospital stay (β = 0.11) were significantly and independently associated with the quadriceps echo intensity. Conclusions The current results revealed that higher malnutrition risk was associated with increased intramuscular adipose tissue of the quadriceps of older inpatients even after adjusting for other characteristics. Nutritional intervention may be necessary for decreasing intramuscular adipose tissue of the quadriceps in older inpatients who have higher malnutrition risk.

Barbalho, M, Gentil, P, Raiol, R, Fisher, J, Steele, J, and Coswig, V. Influence of adding single-joint exercise to a multijoint resistance training program in untrained young women. J Strength Cond Res 34(8): 2214-2219, 2020-The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of adding single-joint (SJ) exercises to a multijoint (MJ) resistance training (RT) program on muscle strength and anthropometric measures of young women. Twenty untrained women were divided into a group that performed only MJ exercises or a group that performed both SJ and MJ exercises (MJ + SJ). Before and after 8 weeks of training, the participants were tested for 10 repetition maximum (10RM). Flexed arm circumference and triceps and biceps skinfold thickness were also measured. Both groups significantly decreased biceps (-3.60% for MJ and -3.55% for MJ + SJ) and triceps skinfold (-3.05% for MJ and -2.98% for MJ + SJ), with no significant difference between them. Flexed arm circumference significantly increased in both groups; however, increases in MJ + SJ (4.39%) were significantly greater than MJ (3.50%). Increases in 10RM load in elbow extension (28.2% for MJ and 28.0% for MJ + SJ), elbow flexion (29.8% for MJ and 28.7% for MJ + SJ), and knee extension (26.92% for MJ and 23.86% for MJ + SJ) were all significant and not different between groups. The results showed that adding SJ exercises to an MJ RT program resulted in no additional benefits in muscle performance, whilst differences in flexed arm circumference were small, but significant, in untrained women.

Background and Aim: In everyday practice, the anthropometric assessment including measures of skinfolds and body girths must be performed avoiding previous physical exercise. However, few studies are conducted using situations with ecological validity. Thereby, this study aimed to compare if 10k treadmill run alters skinfold measures and body girths of runners. Methods: Eighteen runners of both sexes and levels (34 ± 6 years old with 8 ± 7 years of run practice and 63.6 ± 8.8 ml*kg-1*min-1 of VO2max) underwent body girths, skinfolds thickness and body weight assessments before and after the 10k run. The anthropometric parameters were compared by Student’s t-Test dependent for paired samples and correlations between body weight reduction and anthropometric parameters were compared by Pearson’s correlation coefficient with α= 5%. Results: The 10k run reduces 1.4% of body weight. However, no significant changes were observed in the sum and neither of skinfold thickness nor body girths. The percentage of body weight reduction also not correlated with the exercise-induced changes in skinfold thickness and body girths. Conclusion: Therefore, although 10k run causes a body weight reduction, the skinfold thickness and body girths were not altered by previously exercise and not correlates with body weight reductions. In this way, the use of these anthropometric assessment techniques can occur both before and after a conventional training session in runners.

AIM To identify anthropometric indicators that could predict pelvic floor muscle distress (PFMD) in young women. METHOD A cross-sectional study was conducted, whose sample consisted of 54 women aged between 18 and 35 years. The Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory was used to assess the PFMD. The anthropometric indicators evaluated were body mass index (BMI) being measured the weight and height, body fat percentage (skinfolds), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and relative fat mass (RFM), which is calculated from height and WC. Descriptive and inferential statistics (Spearman correlation, simple linear regression, and receiver operating characteristic curve) were used, with a significance level of 5%. Infant adiposity may be related to later metabolic health. Maternal metabolite profiling reflects both genetic and environmental influences and allows elucidation of metabolic pathways associated with infant adiposity. In this multi-ethnic Asian cohort, we aimed to (i) identify maternal plasma metabolites associated with infant adiposity and other birth outcomes and (ii) investigate the maternal characteristics associated with those metabolites. In 940 mother-offspring pairs, we performed gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and identified 134 metabolites in maternal fasting plasma at 26–28 weeks of gestation. At birth, neonatal triceps and subscapular skinfold thicknesses were measured by trained research personnel, while weight and length measures were abstracted from delivery records. Gestational age was estimated from first-trimester dating ultrasound. Associations were assessed by multivariable linear regression, with p-values corrected using the Benjamini-Hochberg approach. At a false discovery rate of 5%, we observed associations between 28 metabolites and neonatal sum of skinfold thicknesses (13 amino acid-related, 4 non-esterified fatty acids, 6 xenobiotics, and 5 unknown compounds). Few associations were observed with gestational duration, birth weight, or birth length. Maternal ethnicity, pre-pregnancy BMI, and diet quality during pregnancy had the strongest associations with the specific metabolome related to infant adiposity. Further studies are warranted to replicate our findings and to understand the underlying mechanisms. Skinfold thickness measurements for assessing body composition are reported to have good reproducibility compared to the reference method of dual energy absorptiometry (DXA). In the current study, we compared the level of agreement between body composition measured with DXA and skinfold thickness (SFT) in CKD Stage 3 and 4, at 2 occasions, 6 months apart.Body composition was assessed in 177 Indian patients with CKD Stage 3 and 4 using DXA and anthropometry (SFT). The body fat mass obtained by the 2 methods was compared by paired t-test, intraclass correlation coefficients, regression analysis, and Bland-Altman plots. A linear regression analysis was done to identify the patient-related parameters which would account for the intermethod differences between DXA and SFT.Compared to DXA, SFT underestimated the fat mass at baseline as well as 6 months [DXA vs. SFT at entry: 15.85 kg (95% confidence interval, CI 15.07-16.65) vs. 13.71 kg (95% CI 13.21-14.32), P.001; at 6 months: 16.13 (95% CI 15.33-16.93) vs. 13.85 (95% CI 13.25-14.45), P.001]. The intraclass correlation coefficients at entry and 6 months were 0.894 (0.857-0.921) and 0.896 (0.860-0.923), respectively. The intermethod differences between DXA and SFT at baseline and 6 months were comparable: 2.08 kg (95% CI 1.66-2.5) at baseline versus 2.27 kg (95% CI 1.83-2.71) at 6 months, P = 0.200. Gender and body mass index turned out to be the significant predictors of intermethod differences at base line and exit (P.001).SFT-based measurements show good reproducibility compared to DXA over a period of 6 months. However, SFT systematically underestimates the fat mass by 2 Kg compared to DXA.

Background The present study was conducted to jointly assess some specific factors related to body fat measures using a multivariate multilevel analysis in a representative sample of Iranian mid-adolescents. Methods This study was conducted among 2538 students (1286 boys) aged 14–20 years old, who were randomly selected among 16 public high schools by multi-stage random sampling procedure from all education districts of Shiraz, Iran. Data on demographic characteristics, family history of obesity, physical activity, socio-economic (SES) variables and screen time were collected. Height, weight, triceps (TST), abdominal (AST), and subscapular (SST) skinfold thickness were measured and their body mass index (BMI) was calculated. A multivariate multilevel approach was used to analyze the factors associated with obesity measures of the TST, AST, SST at the child and district levels. Results In this study, the prevalence of overweight and obesity was estimated to be 10.2 and 5.1%, respectively. Overall, the major portion of the total variance in TST (97.1%), AST (97.7%), and SST (97.5%) was found at the child level. The results of multivariate multilevel method revealed that being girls, having a family history of obesity, and SES were significantly associated with increasing of three body fat measures (all the p-values were less than 0.05). There were significant positive associations between moderate to vigorous physical activities with AST and SST (for AST: β =2.54, SE = 1.40, p = 0.05; for SST: β =2.24, SE = 1.20, p = 0.05). Compared to children in 14–16 age group, children in age group 16–18 years had less TST (β = − 0.67, SE = 0.34, p = 0.04). Furthermore, other age groups and screen time did not play an important role in three outcome variables. Conclusions The results showed some factors that contribute to three body fat measures. Therefore, it is necessary to develop effective interventions to prevent the effects of individual and environmental undesirable factors on childhood obesity in both family and community levels.

The phase angle is used to evaluate nutritional status and is an indicator of cellular health. Cardiorespiratory fitness and body composition are strong indicators of health during adolescence. We aimed to evaluate if body composition and cardiorespiratory fitness have an association with phase angle among adolescents. 203 girls and 220 boys (12.8±1.3 years) were evaluated. Peak height velocity, percentage fat mass, fat-free mass, cardiorespiratory fitness, and phase angle measurements were collected. Linear regression adjusted by peak height velocity was used to verify if predictor variables were associated with phase angle among adolescents. Phase angle showed correlation with fat-free mass (girls: r=0.42 and boys: r=0.37); with percent fat mass (girls: r=0.23); and with cardiorespiratory fitness (boys: r=0.19). Linear regression showed that percentage fat mass (in girls) and cardiorespiratory fitness (in boys) had an effect of 11 and 17% in phase angle, respectively, while fat-free mass had an effect of 22 and 26% in phase angle for girls and boys, respectively. Changes in phase angle seem to be more associated with the percentage fat mass in girls, cardiorespiratory fitness in boys, and fat-free mass in both when controlled by peak height velocity.

OBJECTIVE: Our hypothesis was that the activity of placental nutrient-sensing pathways is associated with adiposity and metabolic health in childhood. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using placental villus samples from healthy mothers from the Healthy Start Study, we measured the abundance and phosphorylation of key intermediates in the mTOR, insulin, AMPK, and ER stress signaling pathways. Using multivariate multiple regression models, we tested the association between placental proteins and offspring adiposity (%fat mass) at birth (n = 109), 4–6 months (n = 104), and 4–6 years old (n = 64), adjusted for offspring sex and age. RESULTS: Placental mTORC1 phosphorylation was positively associated with adiposity at birth (R(2) = 0.13, P = 0.009) and 4–6 years (R(2) = 0.15, P = 0.046). The mTORC2 target PKCα was positively associated with systolic blood pressure at 4–6 years (β = 2.90, P = 0.005). AMPK phosphorylation was positively associated with adiposity at birth (β = 2.32, P = 0.023), but the ratio of phosphorylated to total AMPK was negatively associated with skinfold thickness (β = −2.37, P = 0.022) and body weight (β = −2.92, P = 0.005) at 4–6 years. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report of associations between key placental protein activity measures and longitudinal child outcomes at various life stages. Our data indicate that AMPK and mTOR signaling are linked to cardiometabolic measures at birth and 4–6 years, providing novel insight into potential mechanisms underpinning how metabolic signaling in the placenta is associated with future risk of cardiovascular disease.

Skinfold thickness is an indicator of body fat, allowing a more detailed description of obesity. In Vietnam, there are no published percentile values for triceps and subscapular skinfold measurements from population-based studies of adolescents. This study aims to establish percentile tables for triceps, subscapular, and triceps + subscapular skinfolds (TSF + SSSF) sum. Objective:Body fat distribution may be a stronger predictor of metabolic risk than BMI. Yet, few studies have investigated secular changes in body fat distribution in middle-income countries or how those changes vary by socioeconomic status (SES). This study evaluated changes in body fat distribution by SES in Colombia, a middle-income country where BMI is increasing rapidly.Design:We applied factor analysis to previously published data to assess secular changes in adiposity and body fat distribution in cross-sectional samples of urban Colombian women. Anthropometry was used to assess weight, height and skinfolds (biceps, triceps, subscapular, suprailiac, thigh, calf).Setting:Cali, Colombia.Participants:Women (18–44 years) in 1988–1989 (n 1533) and 2007–2009 (n 577) from three SES groups.Results:We identified an overall adiposity factor, which increased between 1988–1989 and 2007–2008 in all SES groups, particularly in the middle SES group. We also identified arm, leg and trunk adiposity factors. In all SES groups, leg adiposity decreased, while trunk and arm adiposity increased.Conclusions:Factor analysis highlighted three trends that were not readily visible in BMI data and variable-by-variable analysis of skinfolds: (i) overall adiposity increased between time periods in all SES groups; (ii) the adiposity increase was driven by a shift from lower body to upper body; (iii) the adiposity increase was greatest in the middle SES group. Factor analysis provided novel insights into secular changes and socioeconomic variation in body fat distribution during a period of rapid economic development in a middle-income country.

Background: Ocean racing has become increasingly demanding, both physically and psychologically. The aim of the study was to assess global changes after a transoceanic race.Materials and methods: Eight male sailors were evaluated pre- and post-race through anthropometric measurements (weight, skinfold, girth at different level and estimated body fat percentage), multifrequency tetrapolar bioelectrical impedance, muscular performance, visual analogic scale for perceived fatigue and Critical Flicker Fusion Frequencies for cerebral arousal.Results: Compared to pre-race values, a significant decrease in body weight (–3.6 ± 1.4%, p = 0.0002) and body composition with reduction of body fat percentage (–15.1 ± 3.5%, p < 0.0001) and fat mass (–36.4 ± 31.4%, p = 0.022) was observed. Muscle performance of the upper limb was preserved. In the lower limb, monohulls skippers showed a significant reduction of jump height (–6.6 ± 4.8%, p = 0.022), power (–11.7 ± 7.3%, p = 0.011) and speed (–14.6 ± 7.4%, p = 0.0006) while a multihulls skipper showed a gain in speed (+0.87%), power (+8.52%), force (+11%) resulting in a higher jump height (+1.12%). These changes were inversely correlated with sea days (Pearson r of –0.81, –0.96 and –0.90,respectively, p < 0.01).Conclusions: Changes in body weight and composition are consistent with previous data indicating a probable negative energy balance. Context Familial partial lipodystrophy, Dunnigan variety (FPLD2) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder resulting from LMNA causal variants, which is characterized by loss of subcutaneous fat from the extremities and predisposition to metabolic complications. The diagnostic value of various anthropometric measurements for FPLD2 remains unknown. Objective To determine specificity and sensitivity of anthropometric measurements for the diagnosis of FPLD2. Methods We measured skinfold thickness and regional body fat by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in 50 adult females and 6 males with FPLD2 at UT Southwestern and compared their data with the sex- and age-matched controls from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2010. We further compared data from 1652 unaffected females from the Dallas Heart Study and 23 females with FPLD2 from the National Institutes of Health with the NHANES data. Results The DXA-derived lower limb fat (%) had the best specificity (0.995) and sensitivity (1.0) compared with the upper limb fat, truncal fat, the ratio of lower limb to truncal fat, and triceps skinfold thickness for adult females with FPLD2. The lower limb fat below 1st percentile of NHANES females had a false-positive rate of 0.0054 and a false negative rate of 0. The diagnostic value of anthropometric parameters could not be determined for males with FPLD2 due to small sample size. Conclusions The lower limb fat (%) is the best objective anthropometric measure for diagnosing FPLD2 in females. Women with below the 1st percentile lower limb fat should undergo genetic testing for FPLD2, especially if they have metabolic complications.
