Padel is a racket sport that has been gaining great popularity and scientific interest in recent years. It could be considered to be a high-intensity intermittent sport with valuable cardiovascular and neuromuscular benefits; however, the risk of injury cannot be neglected. To date, there is still a gap of knowledge in the scientific literature on this emergent sport. Therefore, the present review aims to synthetize the current knowledge on padel game dynamics to better characterize the main risk factors, the injury rate and characteristics, and the most effective rehabilitative treatment strategies. PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, and PEDro were screened up to January 2022 to identify eligible studies focusing on padel players as participants. Out of 160 records, we included 19 studies, which were focused on match analysis, anthropometric and physical training, the risk of injury, and rehabilitative interventions. The results showed that the high action velocity and the sudden changes in direction during a padel match could represent a risk factor for injuries, especially in untrained players. However, the high heterogeneity of the studies in the literature hinders our ability to draw any strong conclusions, and the results should be carefully considered. Future research should address the lack of knowledge on injury mechanisms and type to implement a tailored rehabilitation program.

Aims To study the pattern of physical growth and pubertal changes in adolescent girls with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Methods and Material Weight, height, BMI, waist and hip circumference among 50 adolescent SLE girls (aged 8–17 years) were cross-sectionally studied using standardized techniques and instruments. Breast development stage, presence or absence of pubic and axillary hair and age of attainment of menarche were also noted. Results With the advancement of age, weight and height of SLE girls increased but they were lighter and shorter compared to normal Indian peers. 18.4% of study girls were short-statured while only one participant was underweight. As per mid-parental height, 34.3% were predicted to have shorter final heights. BMI demonstrated an inconsistent trend with 12.3% and 9.2% being obese and overweight, respectively. Interestingly, 10.7% of SLE girls were at risk of metabolic syndrome (waist circumference >70th centile). About 50% of study girls had attained menarche (mean age: 13.04 ± 1.38 years). Appearance of pubic and axillary hair occurred around 1 year later than attainment of menarche. 33.80% of study subjects were in prepubertal stage of breast development and rest 66.20% were in advanced stages of breast development. SLE girls who had younger age at diagnosis and longer duration of therapy had significant delay in breast development and attainment of menarche. Conclusions SLE girls show delayed growth and pubertal attainments compared to their normal Indian and Western counterparts. The data presented will provide an understanding of the auxological dynamics and pattern of pubertal changes among adolescent girls with SLE living in north-western India.

Introduction: The first rib is the shortest, most curved and atypical of all ribs. An angle is visible between the head and the tubercle at the inferior portion of the neck, which can indicate the sex of the individual when viewed in a non anatomical position. Aim: To determine the morphometric and morphological variations of the first rib in the population of Rajasthan. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Anatomy Department of SMS Medical College, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India, from January 2023 to April 2024. A total of 90 adult human dry first ribs (45 right and 45 left) of unknown age and sex were studied. Intact right and left ribs were included, while damaged first ribs were excluded. Data were collected using a Vernier calliper and thread to measure length, height, angle, external length, internal length, shortest external length and shortest internal length. Morphological variations, such as the scalene tubercle and vascular groove, were observed. Independent samples t-tests were used to compare means between the right and left-sides and correlation analysis assessed relationships between angular orientation and anatomical dimensions. The statistical analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel 2020 and IBM Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0. Results: The descriptive statistics for the measured variables are as follows: the mean height and length on the right-side were 6.99±3.45 cm and 26.69±2.41 cm, respectively, while on the left-side they were 7.35±2.55 cm and 26.10±2.80 cm, respectively. The angle was greater on the left-side (16.59±6.18º). Statistical analysis indicated non significant differences between all the variables of the right and left-sides (p-value >0.05), except for strong positive correlations between angle and height (Right: r-value=0.986, p-value=0.001; Left: r-value= 0.952, p-value=0.001). Conclusion: The morphometric parameters of the first rib indicate non significant differences between the right and left-sides. The strong positive correlations between angle and height have clinical significance, as they can assist in forensic and anatomical studies related to intervertical dimensions and anatomical alignment based on the angular orientation of the first rib.

Introduction: Fasting denotes abstinence from food or drink or both for well-being, ritualistic, and spiritual purposes. This study was conducted to explore the effect of Navratras fasting on anthropometric parameters, biochemical factors, and pro-inflammatory biomarkers. Materials and Methods: This study was a short-term longitudinal follow-up study conducted during Navratras (Oct 2020) in a residential medical college campus in western Maharashtra. Assessment of the participants based on anthropometry, biochemical, and pro-inflammatory markers was done at three-time points 7 days before the start of intermittent fasting (T1) (before the start of Navratras), at the end of intermittent fasting (the last day of the festival) (T2) (during Navratras), and 1 week after completion of intermittent fasting (T3) (after the end of Navratras). Results: A total of 50 subjects participated in the study, and the mean age of study participants was 33.6 ± 10 years. There was a significant reduction in body weight (P = 0.001), waist circumference (P = 0.001), and hip circumference (P ≤ 0.05) during the intermittent fasting period (T2). Significantly lower levels of total cholesterol (P < 0.01) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) (P < 0.01) were observed in the T2 and T3 time points of sampling. However, a significant increase in TNF-alpha, IL-1, IL-6, and IL-8 levels was observed during the T2 phase (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The current exploratory study evaluating the importance of intermittent fasting during Navratras showed a significant reduction in certain anthropometric as well as biochemical parameters. It is recommended that intermittent fasting may be considered by individuals who are overweight and need to improve overall health. However, it is important that like any other weight-loss program, intermittent fasting should also be undertaken under medical supervision.

Summary Objectives: Immunization coverage and anthropometry of a community constitute a good index for measuring child-health status for that community. We therefore, Studied the anthropometry, and the coverage of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) vaccines in randomly selected rural communities of Sokoto State. Design: Cross-sectional randomized study. Method: One hundred and fifteen mothers of children present at the randomly chosen :sites on the days of the study were interviewed using pre-tested questionnaires. Information on the immunization status was based on parental recall, and this was mostly confirmed by a review of individual immunization cards, while nutritional assessment was based on weight-for-age data. Results: The 115 children (56 males, 59 females) were aged less than six years (mean age, 4.71 + 1.24 years). Background: Babies are classified according to the relationship between birth weight and gestational age, the latter being the strongest determinant of birth weight. Small-for-gestational age (SGA) babies have birth weights less than the 10th percentile for age and sex or more than two standard deviations below the mean for age and sex. Objective: The study was carried out to investigate the maternal factors associated with the delivery of term small-for-gestational age babies in a Nigerian Hospital. Methods: In the cross-sectional survey, the anthropometric parameters of term singleton infants were related to maternal age, Parity, socio-economic class, anthropometry and medical disorders in pregnancy. Results: A total of 825 babies were surveyed within the first 24 hours of life. The mean birth weight of babies was 3233 ± 539g. The males had significantly longer mean crown-heel length and mean occipitofrontal circumference compared to females p = 0.048 and p < 0.000 respectively). The prevalence of infants with small-for-gestational age was 7.2% (5.7% and 8.8% among males and females respectively). The proportion of mothers who did not encounter significant illness in pregnancy was lowest among those who had SGA babies, followed by mothers of LGA babies and those of AGA babies in that order. With respect to maternal age, weight, height and body mass index (except inter-pregnancy interval), mothers of SGA babies had significantly lower values compared to mothers of the AGA and LGA babiesc(p < 0.03). Conclusion: This study identified age, parity, anthropometry and hypertension- related disorders as major maternal factors associated with the birth of SGA babies in Nigeria.

Background: Childhood growth is characterized by changes in anthropometric parameters. The location of the apex beat may be similarly influenced by growth. Objectives: The objective of thisstudy was to determine any relationship between the location of the apex beat and anthropometric parameters. Subjects and Methods: This crosssectional survey was carried out in Sagamu, Nigeria. Apparently healthy children were randomly selected for the study. Apex beat location in the intercostal space was determined and distance from the midline was recorded. Weight and length/height were also recorded while Body Mass Index (BMI) and Body Surface Area (BSA) were calculated. Results: A total of 237 children aged 12 hours to 10 years were surveyed. The mean distance of the apex beat from the midline from birth to 10 years ranged from 2.3cm to 6.4cm. The mean distance of apex beat from the midline increased progressively with weight, height, chest circumference and BSA but not with BMI. Strong correlations were observed between distance of apex beat from the midline and weight (r = 0.850, p ˂ 0.001); height (r = 0.867, p ˂ 0.001); chest circumference (r = 0.833, p ˂ 0.001); BSA (r = 0.862, p ˂ 0.001) but not with Body Mass Index (r = 0.019, p = 0.774). Conclusion: The location of the apex beat in children was strongly influenced by growth as suggested by anthropometric parameters.

Background: Anthropometric parameters such as body weight, body length, occipitofrontal circumference and foot length are known to increase with gestational age. The estimated gestational age (EGA) is the approximate duration of pregnancy to the nearest two weeks at the point of birth. Objective: To determine if there is a relationship between postnatal foot length and anthropometric parameters such as body weight, body length and occipito-frontal circumference in the estimation of gestational age among Nigerian neonates. Methods: At the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Nigeria, a cross-sectional study was carried out among 260 neonates with EGA 30- 42 weeks within the first 48 hours of life between December 2017 and December 2019. Postnatal foot lengths were measured with Vernier digital caliper while body weight, body length and occipitofrontal circumference (OFC) were also measured using standard procedures. CC –BY 4.0 Results: The postnatal foot length, body weight, body length and occipitofrontal circumference showed steady rise with increasing estimated gestational age. The boy weight ranged from 1.19± 0.14kg at 30 weeks to 3.41±0.44 at 42 weeks. The range of body length was 37.78±2.58cm at 30weeks to 50.60±1.67cm at 42 weeks. The occipitofrontal circumference also ranged from 26.65±1.47cmat 30 weeks to 35.40±1.63cm at 42 weeks. The foot length had strong correlation with the body weight (r= 0.892), body length (r = 0.754) and OFC (r = 0.801) in the preterm neonates. In the term neonates, the foot length had moderate correlations with each of the three parameters (r = 0.632, r = 0.473and r = 0.496). Conclusion: Postnatal foot length had the highest correlation with body weight among preterm and term neonates hence, it will be a useful proxy for birth weight in the estimation of gestational age among Nigerian neonates.

Height, age, and gender are a few anthropometric traits that might be utilized to identify the victim from the corpse. If body components are absent, head circumference can be used to determine body height. Objective: The goal of the study was to ascertain whether there is a correlation between head circumference and body height by gender and to create formulas for estimating weight based on head circumference in the Nias tribe at the University of HKBP Nommensen Medan, Indonesia. Material and Method: The study was conducted from September to October 2023 at the University of HKBP Nommensen using an observational cross-sectional design. Of the 100 students who met the inclusion criteria, 50 were men, and the remaining 50 were women. The study's dependent variable was micro-toise-measured height. The head circumference, expressed in meters of tape, served as the study variable. Determining the physical development of the population of the regions is quite convenient within the framework of identifying the level of public health, while it is very important to track changes in the physical health of adolescents entering the reproductive phase of life, depending on the periods of development of the country. The aim of this study was to identify significant changes in the morphological profile of adolescents in Penza and Penza region over 15 years. Material and methods. The object of the study were 492 people of both sexes, 16 to 21 years of age, born and permanently residing in Penza and settlements of Penza region, divided into two groups according to the year of birth (group 1 – born in 1986–1990, 2 group – born in 1999–2004). Anthropometry and somatometry were carried out by the method of V.V. Bunak with subsequent comparative analysis of statistical indicators. For a comparative assessment of the level of physical development and identification of significant differences between the two groups, the following index methods were used: body mass, Rohrer, Erisman, Pignet, Rees-Eysenck, Tanner. Results and discussion. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that Penza residents of 1999–2004 birth, compared with predecessors, there was a significant increase in the studied absolute anthropometric parameters with a simultaneous shortening of the hand and shin length. Among the representatives of the modern youth of the region, when compared with the group of 1986– 1990 birth, the number of people with mesomorphy increased by 2.2 times, the number of people with overweight – by 1.5 times, the number of individuals with a narrow chest – by 1.3 times, the number of cases of a low degree of physical development, hypersthenic type (according to the results of calculating the Rees-Eysenck index) – by 1.2 times, at the same time the number of normosthenics increased by 1.1 times (according to the results of calculating the Pignet index). Conclusions. Comparative analysis showed significant changes in the constitution of the autochthons of Penza region of adolescents over 15 years.

Summary: Two locally prepared multimixes (one containing rice, beans and carrots (RBC) and the other containing rice, fish and carrots (RFC)] were evaluated in the feeding of young children in a small village. The first multimix (RBC) was fed to five children and the second (RFC) to four children, aged between nine and 13 months, for a period of six weeks. Weights and lengths were monitored weekly over the period, while the haemoglobin and haematocrit values were determined at the beginning and at the end of the study. Both multimixes produced a significant increase in weight, RBC producing a weight gain of 1.96 +0.55kg (t= 7.897, p=0.001) and RFC 1.90 +0.52 kg (t= 7.359, p=0.005). The growth velocity of all the children increased during the trial and their standardised weights crossed percentile lines by 15 to 26 percentiles. There were however, no significant increases in length, and haemoglobin levels. The two multimixes met the protein, energy and vitamina requirements of the infants but were short in their daily iron requirements. The results indicate that both multimixes were adequate in feeding young children and in improving their weight gain. It is however, recommended that such locally prepared multimixes be further evaluated in larger numbers of infants, before their widespread adoption.

Context: Worldwide malnutrition is identified as a major health and nutrition problem. Undernutrition contributes to an estimated 45% of child deaths globally. The prevalence of underweight among children in India is among the highest in the world. Our children also bear a tremendous double burden of malnutrition. Aims: To find out the prevalence and determinants of malnutrition among six months to three-year-old children in the rural community of Northern India. Settings and Design: A community-based cross-sectional study conducted among children aged six months to three years in a rural area of Ludhiana district, Methods and Material: A total of 662 children in the age group of six months to three years from a population of 30,000 were identified and included in the study. All the relevant information regarding these children was collected from family folders. Socioeconomic status was assessed using the modified Udai Pareek scale (MUP). Statistical analysis used: The data collected was entered in MS Excel and was analyzed using SPSS version 26 and WHO Anthro Survey Analyzer. Results: Out of 662 children, 16% were underweight. Almost 50% of the children in the two—three years category were underweight. The prevalence of stunting in the study population was 20.7% and that of overweight was 4.8%. The prevalence of underweight was higher in children of low socioeconomic status than in children from upper socioeconomic status (P = 0.000). There was a significant association between birth order and increasing cases of underweight (P = 0.000). Conclusions: The causes of malnutrition in children are complex and involve multiple factors. There is a need for vigorous monitoring for early detection of malnutrition for children aged two—three years. The improvement of maternal education will improve the nutritional status of the child.

Background and Objectives: Dietary restrictions in phenylketonuria (PKU) can prevent children’s normal growth, and compensatory intake of carbohydrates and fats can cause excessive weight gain. This study aimed to investigate some growth indicators in PKU patients aged 6 months to 18 years in Hamadan City in 2023. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional analytical study, the height, weight, and age of all patients ranging in age from 6 months to 18 years, who were registered at the PKU Center of Besat Hospital in Hamedan, were measured and recorded. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated using height and weight information. In addition, the corresponding z-scores were calculated using the online growth calculator software. Z-score values were classified into five levels using World Health Organization criteria. Results: In this study, 80 PKU patients (including 44 girls and 36 boys) were examined. The average age, as well as the average Z-score of height, weight, and BMI for age, were not significantly different in boys and girls. Moreover, 7.5% of children were underweight, 1.3% were severely underweight, 10% were stunted, and 2.5% were severely stunted. Ten percent of children were severely wasted and 6.3% were wasted. On the other hand, 11.3% were overweight. None of these children were obese. Conclusion: In addition to controlling the dietary intake of phenylalanine, it is necessary to continuously monitor the growth indicators of these children and also to control the intake of calories, macronutrients, and micronutrients accurately based on the child's needs.

Abstract Estimating the change rates in body size following the weight loss programs is very important in the compliance of those programs. Although, there is enough evidence on the significant association of body weight change with the other anthropometric indices and/ or body composition, there is so limited studies that have depicted this relationship as mathematical formulas. Therefore, the present research designed to use a mathematical model to predict changes of anthropometric indices following a weight-loss diet in the overweight and obese women. In this longitudinal study, 212 overweight/obese women who received an individualized low-calorie diet (LCD) were selected and followed-up for five months. Anthropometric measurements such as weight, waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), and body composition (lean mass and fat mass) were performed. Then, body mass index, waist to hip ratio (WHR), waist to height ratio (WHtR), a body shape index (ABSI), abdominal volume index (AVI), and body adiposity index (BAI) were calculated using the related formula. Following the LCD led to the substantial and consistent changes in various anthropometric indices over time. All of these anthropometric variations were significantly related with the percent change (PC) of body weight except than WHR. Moreover, according to the mathematical formulas, weight loss was closely related to the decrease of WC (PC-WC = − 0.120 + 0.703 × PC-WT), HC (PC-HC = − 0.350 + 0.510 × PC-WT), body fat percentage (PC-Body Fat = − 0.019 + 0.915 × PC-WT), WHtR (PC-WHtR = − 0.113 + 0.702 × PC-WT), and improvements in ABSI (PC-ABSI = − 0.112 + 0.034 × PC-WT) and AVI (PC-AVI = − 0.324 + 1.320 × PC-WT). The decreasing rates of WC, HC, body fat percentage, WHtR, ABSI, and AVI in relation to the weight loss were clinically and statistically significant. This means that a healthy weight lowering diet would be accompanied by decreasing the body fat, body size and also the risk of morbidities.

Background Age-related changes in body composition affect physical fitness in older adults. However, whether the autonomic response is associated with body fat percentage and its implication for physical fitness is not fully understood. Aim To understand the association between physical fitness, body composition, and heart rate variability in older people and its mediating factors. Methods A cross-sectional study with 81 older adults was conducted, assessing Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), Two-minute Step Test (TMST), body composition, and cardiac autonomic response. Correlation and mediation analyses were performed. Results Body fat percentage negatively correlated with physical fitness (SPPB: r = − 0.273, p = 0.015; TMST: r = − 0.279, p = 0.013) and sympathetic activity (sympathetic nervous system (SNS) index: r = − 0.252, p = 0.030), yet positively correlated with parasympathetic tone (root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD): r = 0.253, p = 0.029; standard deviation of NN intervals (SDNN): r = 0.269, p = 0.020). Physical fitness associated with sympathetic nervous system index (SPPB: r = 0.313, p = 0.006; TMST: r = 0.265, p = 0.022) and parasympathetic nervous system index (TMST: r = − 0.344, p = 0.003). Muscle mass mediated body fat’s impact on physical fitness, while physical fitness mediated body fat’s impact on autonomic response. Conclusion Body composition and cardiac autonomic response to exercise are associated with physical fitness in older people, highlighting a possible protective effect of muscle mass against the decline in physical fitness associated with increased body fat.

Background and purpose: Knee joint disorders are divided into two general categories of traumatic and non-traumatic injuries, including skeletal deformities such as genu valgum (knocked knee) and genu varum (bowed legs). Genu valgum and genu varum are two of the most common deformities of the knee joint. These deformities can directly affect the quality of people's social lives. Considering the importance of determining its rate in the youth community, this study aims to determine the relationship between genu valgum and genu varum with anthropometric indices in elementary school students of Dezful City in 2022. Materials and methods: The current research was cross-sectional-analytical, which was conducted in 2022 at the level of elementary schools in Dezful City on 400 students of girls' and boys' schools between 7 and 11 years old. Patient demographic information, including age, gender, height, weight, family history, and hip joint width, was gathered using a questionnaire. To evaluate the deformation of the lower limb, the participants must stand in a way that the knee is in full extension and the ankles of both legs should be close together so that the patella bones on both sides are facing forward. In this position, deformation of the knee joint (genu valgum and genu varum) was determined by measuring the distances between the medial condyles of the femur and the medial malleolus of the ankle, and its relationship with demographic information was evaluated. Results: The frequency distribution showed that 2.5% of the studied subjects had genu valgum, and 11.5% of them did not have genu varum. These results showed the existence of skeletal disorders in knee joints at the rate of 14% in the studied population. Also, the results of this study showed that only 2.2% of the studied population had a family history of musculoskeletal disorders such as genu valgum and genu varum, and 97.5% of them had no family history, which indicated the absence of a significant relationship between the occurrence of disorders and family history (P=0.187). Introduction: Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a global epidemic and a serious risk for the younger generation. A sedentary lifestyle, urbanisation, and poor dietary choices are cornerstones of diabetes. Early detection of risk factors and prevention of their progression can go a long way in delaying the onset of the disease and reducing the economic burden due to its secondary complications. Aim: To assess anthropometric variables of T2DM among the population in Belagavi, North Karnataka, India. Materials and Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among a study population of 4,473 individuals in 10 wards of urban Belagavi district from September 2021 to September 2023 by house-to-house visits. The 10 wards were selected using a random allocation method by computer-generated random sequence. The study population was divided into three groups: the diabetic group, children of the diabetic group, and a healthy non diabetic group (Group-1, Group-2, and Group-3) with population sizes of 649, 855, and 2,969, respectively. Anthropometric parameters were recorded by trained nurses using measuring tapes, stadiometers, and weighing scales. Data were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 24.0 software. One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test was used to compare the data between the three groups. The Pearson’s correlation test was used to find the association between Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist Hip Ratio (WHR). A p-value less than 0.05 was considered significant. Results: There were no significant differences found in anthropometric parameters among the three groups (p>0.05). However, when comparing anthropometric parameters between different generations, a statistically significant difference was observed in Neck Circumference (NC) and WHR. Further, association between BMI and WHR among the three groups revealed that WHR is a better indicator of obesity compared to BMI, with a statistically significant p-value of 0.03. WHR detected 424 (90.4%), 463 (91.32%), and 1,220 (87%) obese cases in Group-1, Group-2, and Group-3, respectively, compared to BMI, which detected 371 (58.51%), 440 (52.25%), and 1,202 (41.91%) obese cases in Group-1, Group-2, and Group-3, respectively. Conclusion: The NC and WHR are better indicators of anthropometric measurements. Anthropometry could be a non invasive, cost-effective predictive tool for the future risk of developing DM. The present study determined there is an impending need to conduct regular screening programs for early identification of anthropometrics other than BMI, WHR, and NC.

A body shape index (ABSI) is a novel anthropometric index derived by specific algorithms based on measurements of height, weight, and waist circumference. Central obesity has become more important for predicting the occurrence and mortality of cardiovascular events with the increasing number of overweight and obese people. Obesity contributes to the development of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, coronary heart disease and even death by stimulating the production of inflammatory factors that induce chronic inflammatory responses, insulin resistance, metabolic disorders and oxidative stress pathways. ABSI is strongly related to abdominal obesity and can predict atherosclerosis in some populations, but it is also affected by population characteristics, such as the difference in the correlation between ABSI and atherosclerosis in populations of different regions, genders and ages. It is of great significance for early identification of high-risk populations and rational prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases to clarify the relationship between ABSI and atherosclerosis.

In forensic and archaeological contexts, accurately determining an individual's age, sex, height, and weight is essential for the identification of unidentified bodies and dismembered remains. This study assesses the effectiveness of linear regression analysis and artificial neural networks (ANNs) in estimating body weight using foot measurements within the Eastern Turkish population. The research was conducted with medical students, including 149 volunteers—76 males and 73 females. Participants' height and weight were recorded using a stadiometer. Foot measurements were taken with a Vernier caliper and an osteometric board. The data were assessed utilizing SPSS 26.0, and ANN models were developed using the Keras library within the Google Colab platform. In terms of height, weight, and foot size, all these values were significantly higher in males than in females. Linear regression methods resulted in a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 11.83 kg for males, 6.23 kg for females, and 9.56 kg for the entire sample. With ANNs, these error values were reduced to 10.13 kg for males, 5.10 kg for females, and 8.07 kg for the entire sample. The analysis shows that ANNs are more adept at handling complex data, leading to improved prediction accuracy. [Med-Science 2024; 13(3.000): 583-9]

Objectives: To determine secular trends in body height, fat-mass, fat-free mass, and external skeletal robustness in young adults and examine possible relationship between them. Methods: Anthropometric data (body height, body mass; skinfold thickness (SFT) – triceps, abdominal, thigh; circumferences (C) – waist, upper arm, thigh; width – elbow, knee) of young adults aged 20-25 years (N = 5303; males 1985, females 3318) were used from the Slovenian (data)Base of Anthropometric Measurements from 1960 to 2023. Multiple linear regressions were performed. Results: The most significant positive secular trends (p < 0.000) were observed in males for abdominal SFT (B = 0.151, R2 = 0.169) and thigh SFT (B = 0.131, R2 = 0.142). In females, similar trend was observed in waist C (B = 0.151; R2 = 0.169). The most significant negative secular trend (p < 0.001) was observed in muscle area of lower limbs in both sexes (males: B = - 0.427, R2 = 0.000; females: B = - 0.875, R2 = 0.300). Body height and overall body mass were the most important factors influencing the observed decline in external skeletal robustness assessed with frame index according to elbow and knee width according to multiple linear regression. Conclusion: Over the last 60 years, a positive secular trend was observed in body height and body fat, while a negative trend was noted in muscle mass. Increases in body height and overall body mass had the most significant impact on the observed decrease in assessed external skeletal robustness over time.

Background: Assessment of the structural and functional effects of sickle cell anaemia (SCA) on the heart can be done using echocardiography. There has been no agreement on which indicator of body size (weight, height, and body surface area (BSA)) or age in children should be used to relate to and correct echocardiographic measurements. Aim: To correlate the echocardiographic findings of children with SCA aged one to fifteen years in steady state with their age, anthropometry and haemoglobin concentration. Methods: A prospective study carried out at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), between May and October 2005. The subjects were 60 paediatric patients attending the LUTH SCA outpatient clinic and 60 age, sex and socioeconomic matched controls. Their height, weight, and echocardiographic parameters were measured and their BSA and haemoglobin level were determined. Results: The direct echocardiographic measurement (AO, LA, LVPW, EDD, ESD, IVS) and LVM each increased progressively with body weight, height, body surface area and age in both subjects and controls (r > 0.3, p < 0.001 in each case). Multivariate analysis showed that height correlated significantly with AO, ESD, EDD and LVPW in the subjects. All the parameters except age were significantly correlated with LVM both in univariate and multivariate analysis. Conclusion: Echocardiographic parameters in SCA patients are significantly correlated with anthropometric indices and age. Our data suggest best correlation with height in these subjects.

Introduction The interest in estimating muscle mass (MM) and bone mass (BM) has grown in the sporting arena, and more specifically in recreational strength trainees, leading to the creation of different strategies to assess them. The aims were: 1) to investigate the agreement between different MM and BM formulas, and the muscle-bone index (MBI), and to establish the differences between them, in a healthy young adult population; and 2) to analyze if there are differences between males and females in the comparison of MM, BM and MBI formulas. Methods This study followed a descriptive cross-sectional design. A total of 130 adult active recreational strength trainees were evaluated according to the procedures described by the International Society for the Advancement in Kinanthropometry (ISAK). Estimations were made in kilograms of MM and BM by following the equations by different authors. Results The results showed significant differences between the values obtained by all the MM and BM formulas in the general sample (p < 0.001), and by the majority of formulas for male and female samples. In the general sample, Lin’s coefficient indicated a strong agreement between Kerr, Lee, and Poortmans’ MM estimation equations (concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) = 0.96–0.97). However, when stratifying by sex, this agreement persisted only in males (CCC = 0.90–0.94), in contrast with a lack of agreement observed in females (CCC < 0.90). Discrepancies in bone mass agreement were noted both in the general sample (CCC < 0.15) and when stratified by sex (CCC < 0.12). Conclusions In general, differences were found between the values reported by the MM and BM formulas in recreational strength trainees, without an agreement between them. Sex was shown to significantly influence the differences found. The practical implications are that when comparing an individual with reference tables, other studies, or if analyzing an individual’s evolution, the same estimation equation should be used, as they are not interchangeable.

Students’ adjustment to higher education process depends largely on the body’s individual features. The student’s physiological and psychological status, as well as the initial motivational setting attitudes are the determining factors. Given this backcloth, the search for ways to improve the health, while aiming at enhancing future qualified specialists’ working and adjustment capacity, appears to be an issue of utmost importance.Material and methods. A longitudinal study involving university students of different years was carried out, through which anthropometric data were evaluated for the same students in their 1st year and then – in their 2nd year of training; the concentration of testosterone and cortisol in saliva, thyroid-stimulating hormone and triiodothyronine in blood serum was measured by ELISA; also, psychophysiological values were estimated through unified questionnaires.Results. The results showed that over the course of education, the students had their hemoglobin concentration, average hemoglobin content in erythrocytes, and leukocyte number decreased. Notable was a significant increase in 3rd year students’ thyroid-stimulating hormone content and a decrease of triiodothyronine and testosterone. A test relying on the Buss – Durkee Hostility Inventory helped to detect an increase in the aggression and suspicion criterion indicators among senior students if matched versus similar values obtained for their freshmen-counterparts.Conclusions. The research outcomes expand the informational and the methodological base required to evaluate an average student’s functional status from the standpoint of a systematic approach and the theory of the norm. Besides, such data will offer an insight into the main mechanisms behind stressinducing, just like stress-limiting, adjustment strategies. This study of the morphofunctional status indicators allows – while within the annual health monitoring approach – identifying the regulatory and the adjustment capacities in students, both at the time they are enrolled as freshmen and further, thus helping predict the potential risk of maladjustment, which, in turn, may serve a useful tool in taking preventive measures, the final goal being to maintain students’ health through their higher education training period.

Background: The human body dimensions are affected by ecological, geographical, racial, gender, and age factors. Craniofacial anthropometry has become an important tool used in genetic counseling, reconstructive surgery, and forensic medicine. Orbital measurements are important in the evaluation of several systemic syndrome, craniofacial abnormalities, and also surgical treatment of post-traumatic telecanthus. Among these measurements, normal interpupillary distance, inner canthal distance (ICD), and outer intercanthal distance are the vital features to be known. Aims and Objectives: The aims and objectives of the present study were to assess the ICD, head circumference (HC), and circumference orbital index of male and female medical students of North India and find out gender differences in the respective parameters and thus to contribute the present finding to the available literature. Materials and Methods: This was an observational descriptive study conducted in the department of anatomy at a fixed time in 150 MBBS course students in the age group 18–22 years. The ICD and HC were measured using round end digital spreading Vernier caliper. Then, circumference interorbital index (CII) was calculated and analyzed. Results: The mean ICD in males was 3.44±0.33 mm and in females was 3.21±0.32 mm; mean HC in males was 56.03±1.55 mm and in females was 53.88±1.38 mm; and mean CII in males was 6.15±0.54 and in females was 5.95±0.51. Conclusion: The result of this study will help to establish the mean values for of craniofacial anthropometric parameters for medical students of North India, and the results are showing that craniofacial anthropometric parameters are sexually dimorphic.

Background and purpose: The design of medical equipment is a crucial aspect of ergonomics, with the proper fit of tools in the user's hand being a significant consideration in production. This study aims to investigate the level of discomfort experienced by surgeons due to the use of latex gloves in the year 2021, to enhance user satisfaction and reduce workplace injuries. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 135 surgeons in the city of Sari. The data collection tools included a questionnaire for measuring anthropometry in two dimensions and assessing local discomfort. The questionnaire consisted of 12 questions to evaluate discomfort levels in the hands. Two-dimensional anthropometry measured the dimensions of the participants' hands, presenting a 24-dimensional result. Results: Overall, the various dimensions of anthropometry in male participants were larger than those in female participants, except for the second dimension. Male surgeons (52.1%) mostly used gloves size 7, while female surgeons (74.2%) preferred sizes 5/6. The lowest average pain level was recorded in Region B (1.24), and the highest average pain level was in Region I (2.43). Conclusion: The study results indicated that women experience higher levels of discomfort compared to men. The areas with the highest discomfort levels were identified, and optimal dimensions for designing and producing suitable gloves for the study population were determined.

Background. Studying the variability of anthropo- and bioimpedance parameters of elderly and senile men makes it possible to carry out timely preventive measures, reveal diseases in the early stages and apply personalized therapeutic measures. Material and methods. The biometric characteristics of elderly (61–75 years, group I – n = 68) and senile (76–90 years, group II – n = 61) men were studied using anonymized (with known gender and age) dates of anthropo- and bioimpedance-metric parameters with phase angle values within age norms from the archives of the Center for Prevention and Health of Engels, Saratov Region. Total dimensions, component composition of the body, and impedance indicators were determined. Results. In senile men, relative to the elderly, there is a statistically significant decrease in length, body weight, hip girth, fat, lean, active cell mass, total fluid, ecto- and mesomorphy indicators (p < 0.05); Waist circumference and endomorphy index also decrease, but the differences do not reach statistical significance (p > 0.05). Active and reactance increases (p < 0.05), and the increase in specific basal metabolism does not reach statistical significance (p > 0.05). Variability of varying degrees in the studied parameters was revealed. Conclusion. Most of the studied parameters (total dimensions, body fractions) in old age relative to older men decrease; impedance indicators such as active and reactance in relation to body length and specific basal metabolism (basic metabolism in relation to body surface area) increase. The closeness (strength) and direction of the connections, as well as the degree of variability of the parameters, were revealed.

Abstract Objective This study aimed to perform an imaging evaluation to prove the existence or not of symmetry between the clavicles of healthy subjects from Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil, and identify potential factors influencing the clavicular length. Method The study analyzed chest computed tomography (CT) scans of 211 patients with no clavicular fracture or malformations (100 women and 111 men). We measured the greatest clavicular diagonal on both sides, and the software automatically generated the maximum distance in millimeters. Relative and absolute frequencies described qualitative variables and mean values; quantitative variables used a 95% confidence interval. Value comparisons employed the student's t-test, and correlations determinations used Pearson's correlation coefficient. The significance level adopted was 5%. Results There was a significant difference between the clavicular length (right clavicle, 143.58 mm; left clavicle, 145.72 mm; p = 0.037), indicating asymmetry. On average, the left clavicle was 3.71 mm larger. Asymmetry was significant for both men and women (p < 0.001). The average difference was 4.13 mm for men and 3.23 mm for women. Seventy-three percent of the sample had < 5 mm of asymmetry, 23.7% had 5 to 10 mm, and 3.3% had > 10 mm of asymmetry. Conclusion The studied population did not present clavicular symmetry. On average, the left clavicle was longer than the right clavicle, with differences of 3.71 mm in the general sample, 3.23 mm in women, and 4.13 mm in men. The only significant factor was gender since men presented longer clavicles and higher differences than women.

Background: Anthropometry is a process of systemic measurement of the human body and its different parts. A reference dataset of craniofacial measurements of a particular geographic area and particular age group is useful for reconstructive surgery of the face, orthodontic research, criminal and racial identification, assessment of the nutritional status of children and diagnosing dysmorphogenesis conditions. Aims and Objectives: The present study was conducted to obtain the measurements of craniofacial parameters, including head length, head width, head circumference, intercanthal distance, ear length, and ear position in normal- and low-birth-weight (BW) healthy newborn babies to prepare a dataset of these parameters. Another objective was to find out if there were statistically significant differences in the above parameters between male and female newborn population in normal- and low-BW (LBW) newborn groups. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted at the nursery, department of Pediatrics, RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal (Eastern India), on 1571 healthy newborn babies (1-2 days old). Results: We obtained the range and mean value of all the parameters in newborn. No statistically significant sexual dimorphism was observed. The most common head shape was mesocephalic (45%). Low-set ear was found in 0.043–0.057% of cases, and no statistically significant difference was observed between normal and LBW newborn population regarding the distribution of low-set ear. Most of the craniofacial parameters had statistically significantly higher values in normal BW babies than in the low-birth-weight group. Conclusion: These data sets can be used by clinicians, and researchers as a reference for the newborn population of West Bengal.

Background Sarcopenia may be associated with the long-term prognosis of renal transplant recipients, so it is essential to early and rapidly screening for sarcopenia in these patients. Studies suggest that calf circumference may be an effective indicator in early screening for sarcopenia. Objective To investigate the relationship between calf circumference and sarcopenia, and to explore the feasibility of using calf circumference as a predictive marker for sarcopenia in kidney transplant recipients. Methods We selected 80 kidney transplant recipients who were treated in the department of organ transplantation of Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital from October 2021 to June 2022 as the subjects. Demographic information (sex, age, educational attainment, marital status) , anthropometric indicators〔height, weight, body mass index (BMI) , calf circumference, mid-arm circumference (MAC) , triceps skin-fold thickness (TSF) , arm muscle circumference (AMC) , waist circumference, hip circumference, waist-to-hip ratio〕, muscle strength indicators (grip strength, pinch strength) , body composition indicators〔appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) , skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) , 50 kHz phase angle (PhA) , body cell mass (BCM) , intracellular and extracellular fluids〕 were collected. Sarcopenia was diagnosed by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 consensus. Kidney transplant recipients who meet the diagnostic criteria were included in the sarcopenia group, and those who do not meet the diagnostic criteria were included in the non-sarcopenia group. Demographic information, anthropometric indicators, muscle strength indicators, and body composition indicators between sarcopenia and non-sarcopenia patient groups were compared by sex. Pearson correlation analysis and Spearman rank correlation analysis were used to observe the correlation of calf circumference with diagnostic indicators of sarcopenia (ASM, SMI, grip strength) . Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to explore the influencing factors of sarcopenia. The predictive value of calf circumference for sarcopenia in kidney transplant of male and female subjects was analyzed by using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and the area under the curve (AUC) , sensitivity, specificity and optimal cut-off values were calculated. Results A total of 80 patients〔51 men (63.8%) and 29 women (36.2%) 〕 with an average age of (44.3±11.7) years were included, including 19 (23.75%) with sarcopenia, and 61 (76.25%) without. The aim of our study was to evaluate the anthropometric features used in the determination of somatotypes of patients with rotator cuff tears (RCT) and the condition before and after physiotherapy. In our study, 84 patients (43 female, 41 male) who were admitted to Tekirdağ State Hospital in 2020-2021 and diagnosed with RCT were included. Participants were grouped and evaluated in terms of age and gender. Visual analog scale (VAS) scoring for pain, Western Ontario Rotator Cuff (WORC) index, Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI), and Quick Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) scores for shoulder function and range of motion (ROM) values were measured. The Heath-Carter method was used for somatotype determination. Conventional physical therapy was applied to patients. 64 (76.2%) patients had endomorph-mesomorph, 14 (17%) had mesomorph-endomorph, 4 (5%) had mesomorph-endomorph, 1 (1%) had balanced mesomorph and 1 (1%) had ectomorph-endomorph somatotype. 71.4% of the participants younger than 45 years of age and 50% of those between 45 and 55 had partial tears; 80% of those between 56 and 65 and 76.5% of those older than 65 had a complete tear. Of the patients, 53.3% had cardiovascular diseases, 41.3% had problems with the digestive system, 25% had diabetes, and 24% had problems with the musculoskeletal system. The presence of RCT in the non-dominant shoulder was detected in 33.5% of the patients. There were statistically significant differences between the median values of VAS, Quick DASH, WORC, SPADI, and ROM before and after physical therapy. Regardless of gender, RCT patients had predominantly mesomorphic body types. Individuals with mesomorphic body types are more likely to have RCT. The presence of full-thickness tears was found to be closely related to advanced age. Physiotherapy has been proven to be beneficial for RCT patients in our study. Background: Children are a supreme asset to a nation. Beginning six years of life is pivotal for the social, emotional, cognitive, physical, motor, and psychological upbringing of the child. National Family Health Survey (NFHS) 5 data shows 41.9% of children die before the age of five years, with greater mortality in the rural areas (45.7%). The present study was conducted to assess the anthropometric profile and immunization status of children in Anganwadi centers. Materials and Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in 21 Anganwadi centers in a rural area in South India. Background: Malnutrition is prevalent among patients undergoing hemodialysis, and a significant number of these people suffer from symptoms of malnutrition. Nevertheless, there are limited data regarding malnutrition based on the anthropometric assessment among these patients in Isfahan, Iran. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of malnutrition based on anthropometric indicators in patients undergoing hemodialysis in Isfahan City. Methods: The present descriptive multi-center cross-sectional study was conducted on 260 hemodialysis patients in Hojjatieh, Farabi, Zahraye Marzieh, Shariati, and Amin hospitals in Isfahan City in 2021. The weight, height, waist circumference (WC), and mid-arm muscle circumference of the patients who met the inclusion criteria were measured. Cut-off point for malnutrition index was determined based on previous studies conducted in Iran. The independent t-test was used to compare the mean difference of the studied indexes in two groups of men and women. Findings: More than half of male subjects had low body mass index (BMI) (58.9%) and mid-arm muscle circumference (53%). In addition, the prevalence of low BMI (73.3%), WC (52%), and mid-arm muscle circumference (73%) was more than 50% among women. Conclusion: A significant percentage of patients included in this study had an unfavorable nutritional status based on the anthropometric assessment. Therefore, regular nutritional assessment and taking necessary actions to prevent or treat malnutrition is necessary in hemodialysis patients.

Background and Objective: Nutritional knowledge can affect food choices and, as a result, sports performance. The study of nutritional knowledge, attitude, and performance in athletes can play a fundamental role in choosing the type of training and adapting suitable dietary interventions. This study was done to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and nutritional performance of male bodybuilding athletes in Gorgan, Iran. Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was done on 104 male bodybuilding athletes over 18 years old with a history of at least three months of continuous bodybuilding who were randomly selected from 13 bodybuilding clubs in Gorgan, Iran during 2020. Parmenter and Wardle’s standard questionnaire measured athletes’ nutritional knowledge, attitude, and performance. The questionnaire was completed by the athletes with the guidance of the researcher. A trained nutritionist collected anthropometric and body composition data using an Omron BF511 device. Results: Poor nutritional knowledge, poor dietary attitude and poor nutritional performance was observed in 67.3%, 33.65% and 77.88% of the athletes respectively. A significant correlation was observed between nutritional knowledge with weight (r=0.23, P=0.02), BMI (r=0.27, P=0.01), and body fat percentage (r=0.22, P=0.02). Background: On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed COVID-19 as a pandemic. COVID-19 has infected more than 5.5 million people worldwide, resulting in more than 3,47,000 fatalities. Obese individuals may be more susceptible to infection with SARSCoV-2. This study was conducted to assess the association between anthropometric parameters and the severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methodology: This analytical cross-sectional study was undertaken on COVID-19-positive patients admitted to COVID-dedicated wards at a tertiary care center in Pune. The data was collected using a convenient sampling method from 185 COVID-19-positive patients. Result: Among those Positive for SARS-COV-2, 128 (69.19%) patients had mild COVID-19, and 57 (30.81%) patients were having severe COVID-19 disease. 36 patients (28.13%) with mild COVID-19 disease were average weight, 48 patients (37.50%) were overweight, and 42 patients (32.81%) were obese. Three (5.26%) of the 57 patients with severe COVID-19 disease were overweight, and 54 (94.74%) were obese. 19 (10.2%) patients had previously been diagnosed with hypertension, and 22 (11.8%) patients had both hypertension and diabetes. Conclusion: Obesity in patients with COVID-19 was associated with severe diseases, particularly pneumonia. Patients having underlying medical illnesses like hypertension and diabetes were found to be at higher risk of severe COVID-19.

Abstract Background and Aims Hypertension is the leading preventable risk factor for cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease and cognitive impairment, and mortality and disability worldwide. Since prevention, early detection, and treatment of blood pressure improve public health, the aim of present study was to determine the best obesity indices and estimate the optimal cut‐off point for each one to predict the risk of elevated/stage 1 and undiagnosed hypertension in the population of center of Iran based on American ACC/AHA 2020 guidelines. Methods This cross‐sectional study was performed on 9715 people who enrolled in 2018 in Persian Adult Cohort in Shahedieh area of Yazd, Iran in 2018. The anthropometric indices including body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), wrist circumference, hip circumference, waist‐to‐hip ratio, and waist‐to height ratio of individuals, were extracted. The receiver operating characteristic curve was utilized to determine the optimum cut‐off point of each anthropometric index to predict hypertension stages and compare their predictive power by age‐sex categories. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 23.0. Results The results showed that BMI has the best predictive power to recognize the risk of elevated/stage 1 hypertension for female (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.72 and optimal cut‐off = 30.10 kg/m2) and WC for male (AUC = 0.66 and optimal cut‐off = 93.5 cm) in 35−45 age group. BMI had the best predictive power for the risk of undiagnosed hypertension for 35−45 years old male (AUC = 0.73 and optimal cut‐off = 28.90 kg/m2) and female (AUC = 0.75 and optimal cut‐off = 5.10 kg/m2), and hip circumference revealed similar predictive power for female as well (AUC = 0.75 and optimal cut‐off = 112 cm). Conclusion Based on our findings, BMI and WC, which are simple, inexpensive, and noninvasive means, are the best markers to predict the risk of elevated/stage 1 and undiagnosed hypertension in young Iranians. It shows that the approach of reducing hypertension prevalence through primary prevention, early detection, and enhancing its treatment is achievable.

In this systematic review, we scrutinise adolescent nutrition in Nigeria, focusing on dietary patterns, intake, and nutritional status. Through a systematic examination of observational studies across three major databases, we analysed data from 67,844 adolescents. Our exploration revealed 102 studies, predominantly cross-sectional, addressing various nutritional dimensions. However, only 13% of these studies demonstrated low risk of bias, with none offering national representation and most concentrated in specific, school-based regions. The findings underscore a complex nutritional landscape with widespread malnutrition and highlight the critical need for high-quality, comprehensive data. The dominance of cross-sectional designs and regional biases in existing research calls for cautious interpretation and suggests a pressing need for more robust, nationally representative studies to guide future nutritional interventions and policy-making in Nigeria.

Objective: To determine the abnormal anthropometric findings among children diagnosed with and managed for transfusiondependent beta-thalassemia major. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Paediatric Medicine, Pak Emirates Military Hospital, Rawalpindi Pakistan, from Sep 2019 to Aug 2020. Methodology: This study involved 310 children of both genders aged 2 to 18 years presenting with beta-thalassemia Major receiving multiple blood transfusions. Anthropometric findings, including height and weight for age, were measured and plotted via World Health Organization-2007 growth charts in all the study participants. Relevant socio-demographic variables, including serum ferritin, were correlated with abnormal anthropometric findings among these children. Results: The mean age of the patients was 8.87±7.42 years. 170(54.8%) male and 140(45.2%) female patients were in the study group. Most of the children [218 (70.3%)] had any abnormal an-thropometric findings, either weight or height for age, while 92 (29.7%) had no anthropometric abnormality. Majority of the patients [198 (63.8%)] patients had stunted growth, while 170 (54.8%) were underweight. Background. Constant monitoring and identification of trends in changes in the physical development of childhood and adolescence leads to the most effective detection of diseases that affect the gene pool and reduce the working capacity of the country’s population. The purpose of the study is to identify significant changes in the somatometric and anthropometric profiles of adolescents by the example of residents of Penza region aged 17-21, divided into 2 groups according to the year of birth. Materials and methods. To achieve the goal of the study, we used the results of anthropometric and somatometric studies of 207 boys aged 17-21 years old, born and permanently residing in Penza and settlements of Penza region, divided into 2 groups according to the year of birth: the 1st group was 110 boys 1986-1990 birth, the 2nd group consisted of 97 young men in 1999-2004 birth. Variation-statistical methods were used to compare the results of the examination of the two groups. Results. The changes affected both anthropometric indicators and the results of calculating the indices. The representatives of the 2nd group showed an increase in standing height, a latitudinal increase in the axial skeleton with a simultaneous decrease in chest circumference. There was a significant change in the length of the upper and lower limbs. An increase in the number of people with a narrow chest, normosthenic and asthenic body types is characteristic; there was an increase in the number of cases of underweight and overweight, mesomorphy, persons with a low and moderate degree of physical development. Conclusions. The study revealed significant changes in the anthropometric and somatometric profile of Penza residents.

Aim: Among the hand functions, grasping is an important function for the continuity of daily living activities. The assessment of grip strength is crucial for identifying athletic prowess, neuromuscular illnesses, assessing potential side effects following hand surgery, and treatment plans. It was aimed to examine whether bioimpedance analysis (BIA) and upper extremity anthropometric measurements are effected grip strength in young adults. Material and Methods: The study was conducted on 110 young adults, 55 males and 55 females, aged 18-25 years. Individuals with a history of trauma, musculoskeletal problems, and cardiac, respiratory, metabolic, or systemic diseases were not included in the study. Non-flexible tape measure, Harpenden anthropometric set, digital caliper, hand dynamometer, and skinfold caliper were used for anthropometric measurements. Body fat percentage and lean body mass, muscle mass, basal metabolic rate, and total body fluid parameters were investigated by bioelectrical impedance measurement. Three measurements were taken to reduce the error rate, and the average of these measurements was considered. Results: Excluding arm circumference, forearm length, and wrist circumference from anthropometric measurements, and mineral from BIA parameters; anthropometric measurements and BIA results were found to be statistically significantly correlated with grip strength. Conclusion: Upper extremity anthropometric measurements and BIA were associated with grip strength and varied according to gender. Significant correlations were found between grip strength with most of the anthropometric parameters and BIA.

Anthropometric assessments are commonly used to diagnose sarcopenia in older adults. However, the ongoing exploration of novel approaches aims to improve the early detection of sarcopenia. This study investigated the association between the height-changing score (HCS) and the risk of sarcopenia defined by anthropometric measurements in 340 older adults (mean age: 66.2 years). The HCS derived from the difference in height and demi-span equivalent height (DEH) was used as an indicator of declining height in the older adults. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed a significant association between the HCS and the risk of sarcopenia in both male and female older adults (OR = 1.146, 95% CI [1.021, 1.286], p = 0.021). In addition, income, BMI, and nutritional status were significantly associated with the risk of sarcopenia (OR = −1.933, 95% CI [0.271, 0.986], p = 0.045; OR = −2.099, 95% CI [0.386, 0.587], p < 0.001; OR = −1.443, 95% CI [0.555, 0.866], p = 0.001, respectively). The white blood cell count, lymphocyte count, and HDL cholesterol were blood biomarkers significantly correlated with calf circumference. It can be suggested that the HCS acts as an indicator and screening tool for sarcopenia risk in older adults, highlighting the potential impact of decreased height on muscle mass loss. Encouraging nutritional support can help mitigate the risk of sarcopenia.

Background: COVID-19 is an infectious disease characterized by a severe catabolic and inflammatory state, leading to loss of muscle mass. The assessment of muscle mass can be useful to identify nutritional risk and assist in early management, especially in older adults who have high nutritional risks. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of calf circumference (CC) with clinical and biochemical markers and mortality in older adults with COVID-19 admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in a public hospital. CC was adjusted for body mass index (BMI), reducing 3, 7, or 12 cm for a BMI of 25–29.9, 30–39.9, and ≥40 kg/m2, respectively, and classified as reduced when n = 176) were classified as having reduced CC. These patients were older, with lower BMI, higher nutritional risk, malnourished, and higher concentration of urea and urea–creatinine ratio (UCR) compared with the group with normal CC. There was an association between edematous patients at nutritional risk and malnourished with reduced CC in the Cox regression, either adjusted or not for confounding. Conclusions: CC was not associated with severity, biochemical markers, or mortality in older adults with COVID-19 admitted to the ICU, but it was associated with moderately malnourished patients assessed by subjective global assessment (SGA).

Introduction: The assessment of growth is essential during preschool age, more particularly in pediatric neurological examination, where measurement of the head circumference plays a vital role. Head circumference (HC) is a simple and non-invasive anthropometric measure. Also known as the frontal occipital circumference, HC has been cautiously used to assess the frequencies of undernutrition among preschool children. Material & Methods: The current study was done on 782 preschool children (boys= 384, girls = 398) aged 24-60 months ICDS beneficiaries of Jalpaiguri by using WHO (2007) recommended cut-off points for head circumference for age. Statistical analyses were also done to determine age and sex variations in Head Circumference. Results: Age combined rates of Head Circumference based moderate undernutrition for boys was 21.87 % and for girls was 25.37 %. Age-combined severe undernutrition among boys and girls were 5.72% and 6.53 %, respectively. The higher percentage of malnourished girls was seen in the previous study done on Midnapore and Bangalkot and a higher percentage of malnourished boys was seen than the Midnapore children. The present study reveals Girls were more affected by moderate and severe undernutrition compared to boys. Conclusion: Head Circumference is an indicator of brain development so initiative should be taken for regular monitoring of ICDS beneficiaries to improve the nutritional condition of preschool children.

Introduction: Cleft lip (CL) and/or cleft palate (CP) are the most common visible craniofacial anomalies throughout the world. CL and CP occur due to a failure of the skeletal components of the mid-face to fuse. The affected individual may have an isolated defect or a combination of both. These children can be undernourished due to feeding difficulties after birth. The growth problems of children with clefts have largely been attributed to inadequate nutrition. The aim of the study is to assess the anthropometric status and micronutrient deficiencies in children with cleft lip and palate. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of 18 months duration conducted at SGT medical college, Gurugram, a tertiary care center in Haryana, India between June 2020 to December 2021 involving the assessment of patients with cleft lip and palate between the age of 3 months to 5 years of either gender who visited pediatric unit for complete evaluation before surgery. A total of 100 patients were enrolled in the study and the following information was recorded: age, gender, hemoglobin, serum vitamin D3 level, serum ferritin, and serum vitamin B12 level. Results: A total of 100 patients were included in the study, of which, 53 (53%) were males and 47 (47%) were females. Anthropometrically, in our study, 83% of patients had moderate to severe wasting, according to WHO classification. Anemia was prevalent in 71.1% of cases in the current study. Vitamin D3 deficiency was seen in 88% of the study population, while 37% of cases had Vitamin B12 deficiency. The correlation between anthropometric assessment and nutritional deficiency suggested that children of cleft lip and palate with severe wasting had significant iron deficiency anemia as well as vitamin B12 deficiency. However, vitamin D deficiency was not statistically significant in severe wasting group. Conclusion: A large number of children with cleft lip and/or palate are not exclusively breastfed due to anatomical deficits. They need supplemental Iron and vitamin D to meet the demands. Macro and micronutrient deficiencies along with recurrent infections, lead to moderate to severe wasting and stunting in these children causing severe malnutrition with complications and failure to thrive.

ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to analyze if anthropometric factors and physical appearance are associated to QoL in Turner syndrome (TS). Materials and methods: Observational, analytical, and cross-sectional study. The SF-36 was applied along with an additional questionnaire regarding specific characteristics of TS. Results: There were no differences in quality of life (QoL) in TS women regarding median height and appropriate height according to parental target height, however, participants satisfied and who did not desire to change their height had better scores in the mental health and role emotional domains than those not satisfied and desired to change it. When comparing participants who were or were not bothered by physical appearance, the results showed that those not bothered by physical appearance had a better score in the vitality and social function domains. Considering patients who did or did not desire to change physical appearance, those who did not want to change their physical appearance had higher scores in the mental component and in the social function and mental health domains of the SF-36. Conclusion: This study indicated that anthropometric factors and physical appearance may possibly be associated to QoL in TS, and also emphasizes the need to develop and validate an official questionnaire regarding specific TS characteristics in order to assess in more detail how specific characteristics of TS interfere with their QoL.

Background: Body anthropometries are indicators of health and disease. It is universally accepted that it is a useful tool for assessing health status. Objective: The aim of this article is to determine the effect of a personalized food avoidance dietary approach to stop hypertension (PFADASH) on anthropometric parameters: body mass index (BMI), triceps skin fold thickness (TSFT), and abdominal circumference (AC) on study participants. Materials and Methods: This was a longitudinal study and part of an open controlled clinical trial of a PFADASH approved by the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Ethics Committee. Anthropometric parameters were compared between study participants with good and poor dietary compliance to a PFADASH. Results: There was no significant difference in the anthropometric parameters: BMI, TSFT, and AC among participants with good and poor dietary compliance to a PFADASH (P > 0.05). Conclusion: There was no negative effect of a PFADASH on anthropometric parameters, despite not being a calorie-restrictive dietary intervention.

Aim. The current study aimed to determine the pattern of birth weights, lengths and occipitofrontal circumference of babies born in tertiary center. Method. Length, occipitofrontal circumference and weight of babies were collected from medical records over last 5 years. These parameters were then plotted in growth chart to find out the nomogram of babies born in our center. Results. A total of 3169 babies (1482 males and 1687 females) were studied. The overall mean birth weight (± standard deviation (SD)) was 2994±419 g, the mean ±SD length 49.4±2.3 cm, the mean ±SD OFC 33.7±1.7 cm. Conclusion. According to NFHS 5, 17% had low birth weight in Tamil Nadu, which is comparatively higher than our study (7.6%). This suggest that with improved care to the antenatal mothers we can reduce the incidence of low-birth-weight babies.
