The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of maternal and dietary vitamin A (VA) level on growth performance, meat quality, antioxidant status, and immune function of offspring broilers. Chinese yellow-feathered breeder hens were fed a basal diet supplemented with 0, 5,400, 10,800, and 21,600 IU/kg VA for 8 wk, with 6 replicates of 22 hens per replicate. Then the offspring hatched from each of the 4 maternal groups were fed a basal diet supplemented with 0 or 5,000 IU/kg VA for 63 D. Overall, there were 8 treatment combinations, each with 6 replicate pens of 20 birds. Results showed that (1) providing VA in offspring diets increased final body weight (FW), average daily gain, and average daily feed intake but reduced feed-to-gain ratio and mortality of offspring broilers (P < 0.05), whereas maternal provision of VA did not significantly affect the growth performance and mortality of offspring broilers. Maternal or offspring VA did not affect proportion of breast or thigh muscle (P > 0.05). (2) Maternal feeding with 21,600 IU/kg VA increased (P < 0.05) pH 24 h postmortem of breast muscle, compared with those without maternal supplication of VA. Dietary provision of 5,000 IU/kg VA in the posthatching diet decreased (P < 0.05) drip loss, yellowness (b∗) value and lightness (L∗) value, and increased shear force and pH of breast muscle compared with those without dietary VA supplication. (3) Maternal or offspring VA did not affect the activities of total superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) or the content of malondialdehyde; however, there was a significant interaction (P < 0.05) between maternal and offspring VA on the activity of GSH-Px in serum. (4) Dietary provision of 5,000 IU/kg VA increased (P < 0.05) the weight proportion of liver and bursa of fabricius, whereas maternal feeding with 21,600 IU/kg VA increased the hatchling BW. Maternal feeding with 5,400 and 21,600 IU/kg VA decreased (P < 0.05) splenic interferon-γ (IFN-γ) transcripts and increased (P < 0.05) those of interleukin-2 (IL-2) in the progeny. There were interactions (P < 0.05) between maternal and offspring VA on splenic IL-2, IL-1β, and IFN-γ expression. In summary, maternal and offspring provision of VA both had influence on meat quality and immune function in progeny broilers. Dietary VA increased growth performance, whereas the maternal VA affected the initial body weight of progeny when hatched, but the difference in performance caused by maternal VA level was able to be eliminated by dietary VA supplementation. Therefore, offspring provision had greater importance than maternal VA in the production; however, both should be considered in broiler nutrition to achieve good meat quality and immune status of broilers.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary iron (Fe) on reproductive performance of Chinese Yellow broiler breeder hens during the egg-laying period. A total of 480, 55-wk-old hens were balanced for laying rate and then randomly allotted into 5 groups, each with 6 replicates (8 cages for each replicate with 2 birds per cage). The trial was for 10 wk. Birds were fed diet with 44, 58, 72, 86, or 100 mg/kg Fe contained feed. Laying performance, biochemical indices and reproductive hormones in plasma, egg quality, ovarian and oviductal variables, tibial breaking strength, and hatching performance were determined. The key performance variables hematocrit, hatchability of live embryos, and tibial breaking strength were selected for analysis by quadratic polynomial (QP) and broken-line (BL) regressions to better determine optimal dietary Fe level. Qualified egg (excluding those with double-yolk, soft-shell, cracked, very small malformed, etc.) rate tended to decrease with the lowest and highest dietary Fe levels. Hematocrit was affected (P = 0.003) by dietary Fe, along with linear (P = 0.017) and quadratic (P = 0.002) effect. There was a significant effect (P = 0.034) of dietary Fe level on tibial breaking strength of breeder hens with a quadratic (P = 0.044) effect. Breeder hens fed inadequate (44 mg/kg diet) or excess (100 mg/kg) Fe both had lower (P < 0.05) tibial breaking strength compared to that of hens fed 86 mg/kg Fe. Hatchability of live embryos was affected (P = 0.004) by diet; with both linear (P = 0.014) and quadratic (P = 0.001) effects. Maximal hatching of live embryos occurred with diets of breeder hens containing 72 mg/kg Fe. From the QP and BL models fitted to hematocrit, tibial breaking strength, and hatchability variables, the optimal dietary Fe level for Chinese Yellow broiler breeder hens in the laying period was 70–90 mg/kg. The daily Fe fed (allowance) was about 8–11 mg.

This study evaluated the effect of the dietary replacement of 1% lard (CT) with 1% perilla oil (PO), 0.9% perilla oil + 0.1% anise oil (PA), or 0.9% perilla oil + 0.1% ginger oil (PG) on indices of lipid metabolism, antioxidant capacity, meat quality, and fatty acid profiles from Yellow-feathered chickens at day 63. Compared with the CT chickens, those given perilla oil had decreased (P < 0.05) plasma lipid levels including triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TCH), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Hepatic TG, TCH levels, and fatty acid synthase activity were also decreased (P < 0.05) in chickens fed diets containing perilla oil. Abdominal fat percentage was significantly decreased in birds fed the PG compared to CT diets. Birds fed the PA or PG diets had increased (P < 0.05) hepatic total SOD, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione-S-transferase than in chickens given PO alone. In addition, the content of reduced glutathione (GSH) in breast muscle was lower (P < 0.05) in birds fed PO compared with those given PG, and the reverse was true for content of malondialdehyde. Compared with the CT diet, the PO diet decreased breast muscle shear values and increased yellowness (b*) of breast muscle (P < 0.05). Birds fed the PA or PG diets had meat with better overall acceptability than those fed the CT diet. Chickens fed perilla oil diets exhibited higher contents of α-linolenic acid (C18:3n-3), DHA (22:6n-3), polyunsaturated fatty acids, and n-3 fatty acids, together with a lower content of myristic acid (C14:0), palmitic acid (C16:0), stearic acid (C18:0), total saturated fatty acids, and n-6/n-3 ratio compared to controls (P < 0.05). These findings indicate that perilla oil has the potential to decrease lipid-related indices and improve fatty acid profiles of breast meat in chickens without adverse effect on antioxidant status or meat quality; this was even better when perilla oil was given together with anise oil or ginger oil.

To reveal the effect of vein-bionic surface textures on the tribological behavior of cylindrical roller thrust bearings (CRTBs) under starved lubrication, six kinds of leaves (Forsythia, Clausena lansiu, Ash, Purple leaf plum, Pipal and Apricot) were chose and their simplified patterns were fabricated on the shaft washers of CRTBs using laser surface texturing. The coefficients of friction (COFs) of vein-bionic textured bearings were measured using a vertical universal wear test rig. Their mass losses and worn surfaces were also characterized. The results show that: There is important influence of the symmetry of vein-bionic textures and the number of secondary veins on the friction and wear properties of vein-bionic textured CRTBs under starved lubrication. Compared to the smooth group, the COFs and mass losses of vein-bionic textured bearings are all reduced. Among all groups, the tribological performance of bearings with a pattern inspired from Ash is the best. Its wear loss is reduced by 16.23% and its COF is reduced by 15.79%. This work would provide a valuable reference for the raceway design and optimization of roller rolling element bearings.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of acidifier (benzoic acid, BA), amylase (AL) and their combination as substitutes for antibiotics on growth performance, antioxidation, nutrient digestion and gut microbiota of yellow-feathered broilers. A total of 1440 twenty-one-day-old broilers were randomly allocated to six treatments. Broilers in the control group (CON) were fed a basal diet, whereas birds in the other five groups were fed the basal diet supplemented with antibiotic (zinc bacitracin, AT, 40 mg/kg), BA (2000 mg/kg), low level AL (AL-L, 300 mg/kg), high level AL (AL-H, 500 mg/kg) and the combination of AL-H and BA (BA+AL-H). The experimental animals were killed at the end of the trial (21 day-63 day) then blood samples were collected from two birds per pen. Bird weight, feed intake and survival rate were recorded on pen basis. Growth performance was not significantly influenced by AT, BA, AL-L, AL-H or BA+AL-H. Plasma uric acid (UA) was decreased from CON by all treatments, the activity of AKP in plasma was also lowered by AT, BA, AL-H and BA+AL-H. Plasma activity of LDH was reduced by BA. In the jejunal mucosa, Na+K+-ATP activity was increased by BA, AL-L, AL-H and BA+AL-H. Mucosal activities of T-AOC and CAT were increased with AL-L and AT supplementation, respectively. Additionally, the relative abundance of Escherichia coli (E. coli) in the cecal contents was reduced by BA+AL-H and, with the exception of AL-H, all treatments increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus. In conclusion, dietary AT, BA, AL-L, AL-H or BA+AL were effective in improving the antioxidant capacity, nutrient digestion and gut microbiota composition. No significant differences were observed in the tested variables between AT and other treatments, indicating that BA, AL and their combination may be alternatives to dietary inclusion of zinc bacitracin. Dietary addition of 500 mg/kg AL and 2000 mg/kg BA was an optimum supplementation dose.

This study investigated the influence of dietary supplementation with some antibiotic alternatives on growth performance, intestinal barrier, and immunity of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenged chicks. Wenshi females, aged 4 days, were allocated randomly into eight groups, each with six replicates of 20 birds (n = 120/treatment), which received a basal diet supplemented with 0 (control), 0 (LPS), 200 mg/kg aureomycin, 50 mg/kg mushroom polysaccharide, 100 mg/kg mushroom polysaccharide, 500 mg/kg nano-copper, 300 mg/kg copper loaded chitosan, and 500 mg/kg lysozyme for 21 days. On day 18 and 20, the control birds were injected with 0.5 mL saline solution, the other treatments were injected with 0.5 mL saline containing 500 &micro, g LPS/kg body weight (BW). The results indicated that LPS treatment reduced the BW, average daily gain (ADG), and daily feed intake (ADFI) than the controls (p &lt, 0.05), and the antibiotic and the tested alternatives could not retrieve the normal BW, ADG, and ADFI. The tested additives reduced several negative effects of LPS, they reduced diamine oxidase activity and inflammatory mediators in plasma, jejunal mucosa, spleen and thymus, increased content of immunoglobulin in plasma and jejunal mucosa, and decreased gene expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase and Cyclooxygenase 2 in jejunal mucosa.

The objective of three trials was to investigate the effects of dietary Fe on growth performance, immune organ indices and meat quality of Chinese yellow broilers during the whole growth period. A total of 1440 1-day-old, 1440 22-day-old, and 1080 43-day-old Lingnan yellow male broilers were randomly assigned to one of six dietary treatments with six replicates per treatment (40 birds per replicate for both 1 to 21 d and 22 to 42 d, 30 birds for 43 to 63 d). Additional Fe (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 mg/kg) was added as FeSO4 &bull, H2O to the three basal diets (calculated Fe 50 mg/kg, analyzed 48.3, 49.1, 48.7 mg/kg, respectively). The calculated final dietary Fe concentrations in Starter, Grower and Finisher phases were 50, 70, 90, 110, 130, and 150 mg/kg. The results showed that average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI) and feed conversion rate (FCR) of the broilers were not influenced by the different levels of Fe (p&gt, 0.05). Weight indices of the spleen, thymus and bursa of Fabricius were not influenced (p &gt, 0.05) by the different levels of Fe during three 21-day experimental periods. Hematocrit, and Fe contents of the liver and kidney were not affected by different levels of Fe (p&gt, 0.05). The diet with 150 mg/kg of Fe increased the a* (relative redness) value of breast muscle compared to the 50 and 70 mg/kg diets at 24 h post mortem (p&lt, 0.05). The diet with 90 mg/kg Fe increased the pH of breast muscle compared to broilers fed 50 or 150 mg/kg Fe (p &lt, 0.05) 45 min after slaughter. The diet with 90 mg/kg Fe decreased drip loss of breast muscle compared to 150 mg/kg Fe (p&lt, 0.05). These data suggest that feeding yellow-feathered broilers on a conventional corn-soy based diet satisfies their requirements without additional Fe at ages 1 to 21, and 22 to 42 d, while 90 mg/kg in the finisher phase improved meat quality, and from the QP (quadratic polynomial) models of the key meat quality variables, pH of breast muscle and drip loss of breast muscle, the optimal dietary Fe level was 89 to 108 mg/kg, and daily Fe fed allowance was 11 to 13 mg in the finisher phase (43 to 63 d).

A total of 200 one-day-old male broilers were assigned to five groups, and each group consisted of four replicates with 10 birds per replicate. Chicks were fed the basal diet with 0 (non-infected control), 0 (infected control), 10, 20, and 40 mg/kg soybean isoflavones (SI) for 42 days. At 21 days of age, chickens were inoculated with an infectious bursal dose (causing 50% morbidity) of the infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) BC 6/85 strain by the eye-drop and nasal route (except for the non-infected group). Average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) decreased (p &lt, 0.05) in broilers infected with infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) from 22 to 42 days. However, infected broilers fed 10 and 20 mg SI/kg had the maximum (p &lt, 0.05) ADG and ADFI from 1 to 42 days. Body weight (BW) increased (p &lt, 0.05) in infected broilers fed the 10 and 20 mg SI /kg diet. The bursa weight at 7 days post-infection (dpi) was increased (p &lt, 0.05) by the supplemental 10 mg SI/kg diet. Infected broilers showed the highest (p &lt, 0.05) bursa lesions, with an average score of 4.0 &plusmn, 0.0, while the severity of bursa lesions was decreased (p &lt, 0.05) at 3 dpi and 7 dpi by the supplemental 20 mg SI/kg diet. Supplemental SI at 20 mg/kg decreased (p &lt, 0.05) the viral protein 5 (VP5) mRNA expression at 3 dpi and 7 dpi. The level of interferon gamma (IFN&gamma, ) was elevated (p &lt, 0.05) in the infected group at 3 dpi and 7 dpi as compared with the control group, while its level was decreased (p &lt, 0.05) by supplemental 10 mg/kg SI at 3 dpi. The level of nuclear factor &kappa, B in the bursal tissue showed the lowest value (p &lt, 0.05) with supplemental 10 and 20 mg SI/kg diet at 7 dpi. Supplemental 10, 20, 40 mg/kg SI improved (p &lt, 0.05) the serum total antioxidant activity (T-AOC) in infected broilers at 3 dpi. In addition, the serum level of malondialdehyde (MDA) decreased (p &lt, 0.05) in the group fed 20 mg/kg SI at 7 dpi. In conclusion, supplemental 10~20 mg/kg SI may have a positive effect on broiler chickens infected with IBDV, probably because SI decrease the severity of bursa lesions and viral protein 5 mRNA expression, and have strong antioxidant activity.

This study investigated the effects of the dietary threonine (Thr) levels on the performance, offspring traits, embryo amino acid transportation, and protein deposition in breeder hens of yellow-feathered chickens. In total, 720 breeder hens of Lingnan yellow-feathered chickens were randomly assigned to 1 of 6 dietary treatments, with 6 replicates per treatment (20 birds per replicate). The breeder hens were fed either basal diet (Thr = 0.38%) or basal diet supplemented with 0.12, 0.24, 0.36, 0.48, or 0.60% Thr from 197 to 266 D. There was a positive response in terms of the laying rate after adding different levels of Thr to the diet, but no significant effects on the average daily gain, average daily egg weight, feed conversion ratio, average broken eggs, and unqualified egg rate (P > 0.05). However, the eggshell strength and eggshell percentage decreased in a linear manner as the dietary Thr concentration increased (P = 0.05). Dietary supplementation with Thr had significant effects on the expression of mucin 2 (MUC2) in the uterus and zonula occludens protein 1 (ZO-1) in the duodenum of breeders (P < 0.05). In chick embryos at embryonic age 18 D, significant upregulation of poultry target of rapamycin (pTOR) occurred in the liver and breast muscle, as well as threonine dehydrogenase (TDH) in the thigh, and aminopeptidase (ANPEP) (P < 0.05) in the duodenum and ileum due to dietary Thr supplementation, but there were no effects on MUC2 expression in the duodenum and ileum (P > 0.05). The livability of the progeny broilers tended to increase with the dietary Thr concentration (quadratic, P = 0.08). Thus, dietary supplementation with Thr had positive effects on the laying production by breeder hens and offspring performance, and it also regulated the expression levels of genes related to amino acid transportation and protein deposition. The optimal dietary Thr concentration that maximized the laying rate in yellow-feathered chicken breeders aged 197 to 266 D was 0.68% according to quadratic regression analysis.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary copper (Cu) on production, egg quality, and hatchability of Chinese Yellow broiler breeder hens and growth performance of their offspring. A total of 576 30-week-old hens were randomly allotted into 6 groups, each with 6 replicates (8 cages for each replicate with 2 birds per cage). The basal diet contained 3.50 mg/kg Cu, and the other 5 treatment diets contained 8.5, 13.5, 23.5 43.5, and 83.5 mg/kg Cu, respectively, additionally supplemented with Cu on the basal diet. Two new avermectin derivatives, avermectins B1c and B1e (1 and 2, resp.), as well as two known compounds, avermectin B2a (3) and ivermectin A1a (4), were isolated from a Beibu Gulf gorgonian coral, Anthogorgia caerulea. The structures of the new compounds were established by detailed spectroscopic analysis and by comparison with spectral data of related known compounds. Compounds 1-4 showed moderate antifouling activities against the larval settlement of Balanus amphitrite.

Two new avermectin derivatives, avermectin B1c (Ia) and B1e (Ib) are isolated along with the known compounds, avermectin B2a and ivermectin A1a.

Background : Patient related factors hindering optimal blood pressure (BP) control in patients with hypertension are unclear. Objectives : To investigate the barriers to optimal hypertension management. Methods : A survey on the awareness and management of hypertension was conducted in 556 patients (365 males, mean age 60.9 ± 10.1) from a rural community. Results : Of the 556 patients who had a clinical diagnosis of hypertension, 127 (22.8%) were unaware the existence of the condition and received no therapy. In the 429 patients who were aware the presence of hypertension, 206 (48.0%) did not receive any antihypertensive medication at the time of this study. Fifty-four (12.5%) had a BP of less than 140/90 mm Hg. Only 21 (4.9%) received formal counselling or education from health professionals and 74 (17.2%) were aware of the optimal level of BP. Difficulty in accessing a specialist doctor was reported by 126 (29.4%). In 279 (65.0%), missing regular antihypertensive medications was reported in the 4-week period prior to this study. Omitting prescribed antihypertensive drugs due to the costs was reported by 169 (39.4%). Conclusions : Inadequate counselling, lack of understanding on the disease, difficulties in accessing specialist care and poor medication adherence are the barriers to optimal BP control. Ninety-six pollen plants derived frome one secondary octoploid triticale (AABBDDRR) and three F1 hybiids (AABBDDR) of octoploid triticale X common wheat were studied cytologically. Various gametic types of the Fl could be fully experssed at the whole plant level. Nearly 20% of the plants possessed some kinds of chromosome variation including deletions, inversions, translocations, as well as isochromosomes and ring chromosomes. The frequencies of plants with one and two (pairs of) rye chromosomes were extremely high, and anther culture may be an expeditious route of creating alien addition lines of distant hybrid F1s. The reasons for the chromosome aberrations are discussed.

Theranostic nanoplatforms integrating simultaneously photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) exhibit intrinsic advantages in tumor therapy due to distinct mechanisms of action. However, it is challenging to achieve PDT and PTT under single near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation with a nanoplatform utilizing conventional organic photodynamic agent and inorganic photothermal agent owing to the difference in inherent excitation wavelengths. Particularly, the single NIR light (660 nm)-triggered PTT and PDT nanoplatform, constructed from chlorin e6 (Ce6) and copper sulfide (CuS) nanoparticles (NPs), has never been reported. Herein, we, for the first time, designed and established a dual-modal phototherapeutic nanoplatform that achieved both PTT and PDT under single NIR laser (660 nm) irradiation for Ce6 and CuS NPs with the strategy of core & ndash;shell structured CuS@Carbon inte-grated with Ce6. Introducing of carbon shell not only endows small CuS NPs with excellent tumor accu-mulation, but also significantly strengthens the photothermal performance of CuS NPs, realizing efficient photothermal performance under 660 nm laser irradiation. Moreover, Ce6 in carbon shell endowed the nanoplatform with photodynamic effect under 660 nm laser irradiation. The as-prepared Ce6/ CuS@Carbon nanoplatform thus achieved dual-modal phototherapy under single NIR laser irradiation, significantly inhibiting tumor growth with minimal adverse effects and superior biosafety.
