The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of a germicidal ultraviolet light-emitting diode (LED) on the contamination level of a back table in the operating room (OR) during total joint arthroplasty procedures.Eight Tryptic Soy Agar petri plates were placed on a table located near the operative field and exposed to air. One plate was removed on the hour over an 8-hour time span. The back table had either an UV-LED for disinfection or a sham UV-LED. This process was repeated in 12 different ORs (6 with UV light, 6 with sham device). The plates were then incubated for 48 hours at 36°C ± 1°C . Colony forming units (CFU) were recorded 24 and 48 hours after incubation.There was a statistically significant difference in total CFUs between the intervention vs sham at 24-hours (27 vs 95, P = .0001) and 48-hours (38 vs 122, P.0001). The multivariate analysis revealed that the 24-hour and 48-hour count, the predictors UV light (P = .002) and hour of plate removal (P = .050) were statistically significantly associated with CFU counts. Together, the predictor variables explained 15.8% and 23.0% of the variance in CFU counts at 24- and 48-hours, respectively.A back table UV-LED may decrease environmental contamination near the operative field. This has potential to lead to a decrease in joint infection.

Light-responsive carriers have been used for the controlled release of antitumor drugs in recent years. However, most light-responsive vectors require high-energy ultraviolet or visible light to achieve local drug release, and ultraviolet light would cause cellular damage. Near-infrared light has a deeper tissue-penetration depths and minimal harm to tissues, but it is difficult to cleave the chemical bond directly. The aim of this study is to develop a novel near-infrared light-responsive carrier for local release of antitumor drugs. Unsaturated phospholipids can be oxidized by singlet oxygen to achieve liposomal drug release, and singlet oxygen can be produced by photosensitizer under light irradiation. A new near-infrared light-responsive nanoliposome was designed that imparts light-triggered local drug release. Nanoliposomes, which were composed of matrix phospholipids and unsaturated phospholipids, were prepared by ammonium sulfate gradient method, and loaded with antitumor drug doxorubicin (DOX) and photosensitizer 1,4,8,11,15,18,22,25-octabutoxypalladium phthalocyanine. Under near-infrared light, photosensitizers could produce singlet oxygen and damage tumor cells by photodynamic therapy. Simultaneously, the unsaturated phospholipids were oxidized by singlet oxygen and result in DOX release, causing sustained cell damage by chemotherapy. Near-infrared light-responsive nanoliposomes exhibit enhanced anticancer activity owing to combined treatment of photodynamic therapy and chemotherapy. A new platform is thus offered for designing effective intracellular drug-release systems, holding great promise for future cancer therapy.

Development of new self-calibrating fluorescent sensing methods has been a popular research field with the aim of protecting the human health and environment sustainability. In this work, a novel Eu-based metal organic framework (MOF) Eu(2,6-NDC)(COO) (BUC-88) was developed by employing 2,6-NDC (2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid) as bridging ligands. BUC-88 performed different sensing process toward quinolone antibiotics and tetracyclines antibiotics in terms of fluorescence intensity and color. BUC-88 exhibited excellent selectivity and sensitivity detection property toward enrofloxacin (ENR), norfloxacin (NOR) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) over other Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPCPs), accomplishing the detection limit of 0.12 μmol/L, 0.52 μmol/L, 0.75 μmol/L, respectively. Notably, BUC-88 acted as an excellent fluorescence sensor for tetracyclines antibiotics with fast response time (less than 1 s), high selectivity and sensitivity (LODs = 0.08 μmol/L). The fluorescent detection method was successfully used for visual and ultrasensitive detection of ENR, NOR, CIP and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) in lake water with satisfied recovery from 99.75% to 102.30%. Finally, the photoinduced electron transfer and the competitive absorption of ultraviolet light are the main mechanisms for sensitive detection toward quinolone antibiotics and tetracyclines antibiotics.

Purpose: To compare the light transmittance property of seven currently used intraocular lens (IOL) models by spectrophotometer data.Methods: Light transmission spectra of seven IOL models were assessed with a spectrophotometer. The transmittance properties were analyzed in 1 nm units from 350 nm wavelength to 800 nm.Results: Three ultraviolet filtering IOL models (ZCB00, XC1-SP, and AT LISA 809M) showed nearly full transmittance of the light from 400 to 500 nm, while steeply attenuating light with shorter wavelengths in various degrees. Three blue-light filtering IOLs (yellow-tinted IOLs; XY1, SN60WF, and TNFT00) showed a slow-sloped increase of light transmission between 400 to 500nm. Among the three, XY1 showed different degree of inclination, showing a steeper slope than SN60WF and TNFT00. The violet-light filtering IOL (ZFR00V) showed a rapid increase of the transmission at around 435 nm wavelength, which is similar to ultraviolet filtering IOLs.Conclusions: The seven different IOLs measured showed different characteristics of light transmission depending on the properties of each material and color. Blue-light filtering IOLs tend to blocked a wide range of wavelength up to 500 nm, but rather were not effective at the range of 400 to 430 nm. Violet-light filtering IOL showed advantages in filtering the high-energy wavelength, around 430 nm, having a potential risk to retina and allowing the transmission of useful blue and green wavelength which is necessary for a better scotopic contrast sensitivity.

BACKGROUND Healthcare personnel are often at high risk of contamination when participating in airway management and other aerosol-generating procedures. AIM To explore the differences in self-contamination after removal of gown and coverall personal protective equipment (PPE) using an ultraviolet-fluorescent solution. METHODS This prospective, randomized, controlled crossover trial was set in a third-level university health centre in Buenos Aires, Argentina between August and October 2020. The study included 60 anaesthesia personnel volunteers, and no participants were excluded from the study. A two-period/two-intervention design was chosen; each intervention comprised audio-guided placement of PPE, full-body spraying of fluorescent solution, audio-guided removal of PPE, and self-contamination assessment through ultraviolet light scanning. The primary outcome was the mean within-participant difference (any traces) between PPE suits. Statistical significance was tested using t-tests for paired data. The allocation ratio was 25/35 (gown followed by coverall/coverall followed by gown). The combination of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) and pure-organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) potentially facilitates the construction of organic chiroptical optoelectronics and display materials, which however are challenging to use in realizing smart control of luminescent colors and switchable chiroptical properties. Here, we show a host-guest strategy to fabricate color-tunable RTP-based circularly polarized phosphorescence. Napthalimides were conjugated directly to chiral segments, of which supramolecular chirality and CPL activities in solid-states could be triggered by substituting bromine atoms on amines. Introducing tetracyanobenzene as an achiral host matrix via simple grinding would allow for the intersystem crossing to trigger red RTP and corresponding CPL by excitation lower than 320 nm, with a large Stokes shift more than 300 nm. The critical excitation wavelength of the RTP switch is determined by the absorbance of tetracyanobenzene. When the excitation wavelength was larger than 320 nm, blue fluorescence dominated with turned off RTP and CPL. The excitation wavelength-dependent RTP and CPL switch allows for detecting ultraviolet (UV) light, showing distinguishable red-blue luminescent color transition, accompanied by on/off RTP. Changing the host matrix from tetracyanobenzene to tricyanobenzene or dicyanobenzene could adjust the critical detecting wavelength limit from 320 to 300 nm. This work establishes a strategy to realize color-tunable, UV light detectable RTP and CPL under smart control.

In order to realize high-sensitivity real-time monitoring of acid-base neutral solutions in the industrial field, it is very important to study how to improve the sensitivity of a pH sensor. Herein, the sensitivity of the pH sensor was improved by using both monolithic integrated planar multi-channel and photoconductive properties of gallium nitride (GaN) high electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) as a core of the pH sensor. The sensitive area of aluminum gallium nitride/gallium nitride (Al $_{0.25}$ Ga $_{0.75}$ N/GaN) heterojunction HEMT channel surface was increased, and the channel effective resistance was reduced by planar multi-channels. And the photogenerated current was generated by 365-nm ultraviolet (UV) light based on the photoconductive effect. This investigation mainly shows as the sensitivity of the tri-channel was 37.04 μA/pH, which increased 30 times compared with that of the single-channel device under the dual action of planar multi-channel and 365-nm UV light coupling in potassium hydrogen phthalate, mixed phosphate, and borax pH correction buffer solutions. The concept of using the GaN HEMT-based pH sensor for direct quantification of pH values in waste water provides a simple and high-performance method for industrial applications.

Objective To review the different causes of secondary immunodeficiencies and provide clinicians with an updated overview of potential factors that contribute to immunodeficiency. Data Sources Recent published literature obtained through PubMed database searches, including research articles, review articles, and case reports. Study Selections PubMed database searches were conducted using the following keywords: immunodeficiency, antibody deficiency, immunosuppressive drugs, genetic syndrome, malignancy, HIV infection, viral infection, secondary immunodeficiency, nutrition, prematurity, aging, protein-losing enteropathy, nephropathy, trauma, space travel, high altitude, and ultraviolet light. Studies published in the last decade and relevant to the pathogenesis, epidemiology, and clinical characteristics of secondary immunodeficiencies were selected and reviewed. Results Researchers continue to investigate and report abnormal immune parameters in the different entities collectively known as secondary immunodeficiencies. Immunodeficiency might occur as a consequence of malnutrition, metabolic disorders, use of immunosuppressive medications, chronic infections, malignancies, severe injuries, and exposure to adverse environmental conditions. The neonate and the elderly may have decreased immune responses relative to healthy adults. Each of these conditions may present with different immune defects of variable severity. The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome results from infections by the human immunodeficiency virus, which targets CD4 T cells leading to defective immune responses. Rituximab is a monoclonal antibody that targets CD20 B cells, and its use might result in persistent hypogammaglobulinemia. Conclusion Clinicians should consider secondary immunodeficiencies in the differential diagnosis of a patient with recurrent infections and abnormal immunologic evaluation. The use of biological agents for the treatment of inflammatory conditions and malignancies is an increasingly important cause of secondary immunodeficiency.

Further observations support the role of environmental factors in autoimmune diseases via the alteration of the epigenetic machinery. In this context, ultraviolet light, smoking, chemicals, and psychological stress have been described as likely examples of this phenomenon. For this study, we took advantage of the PRECISESADS IMI project, which gathered joint data from 2500 individuals with systemic autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), systemic sclerosis (SSc), primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), primary antiphospholipid syndrome (PAPS), and mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD), and aimed to determine such epigenetic modifications in SLE, SSc, pSS, and RA patients. Here, we performed a set of measures in several countries from the north and south of Europe. We observed that autoimmune patients from the north of Europe presented a higher hypomethylated profile associated with an increased gene expression than patients from the south. These genes were associated with interferon (IFN) pathways, immunity, and the pathways associated with cellular metabolism. Since the IFN scores were increased in this population, these patients presented a more inflammatory profile. To conclude, the geographical location of patients with autoimmune diseases has an impact on DNA methylation, RNA expression, and immunological profiles.

Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) maintain a pluripotent state and genome integrity in long-term culture. A rare population of ESCs showing 2-cell embryo-specific gene expression is believed to play critical roles in sustainable pluripotency and genome stability. However, the molecular mechanism controlling this transition to a 2-cell embryo-like (2CL) state remains unclear. We carried out screening to search for the factors involved in 2CL state induction and found a ribosomal RNA processing factor, Pum3 to be a candidate. Increased 2CL state population accompanied with an accumulation of pre-ribosomal RNA and activated p53 in the Pum3-KO ESC. Furthermore, the increase of 2CL state cells in the Pum3-KO ESCs was completely abrogated by the deletion of p53. The DNA damage induced by the Ultraviolet light (UV) irradiation and Zeocin promoted the transition to a 2CL state in a p53-dependent manner. Thus, our study provides new insights into a 2CL state transition mechanism through stress-dependent p53 activation of ESCs.

Background. Recently, an outbreak of a novel human coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has become a world health concern leading to severe respiratory tract infections in humans. Virus transmission occurs through person-to-person contact, respiratory droplets, and contaminated hands or surfaces. Accordingly, we aim at reviewing the literature on all information available about the persistence of coronaviruses, including human and animal coronaviruses, on inanimate surfaces and inactivation strategies with biocides employed for chemical and physical disinfection. Method. A comprehensive search was systematically conducted in main databases from 1998 to 2020 to identify various viral disinfectants associated with HCoV and methods for control and prevention of this newly emerged virus. Results. The analysis of 62 studies shows that human coronaviruses such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus, Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) coronavirus or endemic human coronaviruses (HCoV), canine coronavirus (CCV), transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV), and mouse hepatitis virus (MHV) can be efficiently inactivated by physical and chemical disinfectants at different concentrations (70, 80, 85, and 95%) of 2-propanol (70 and 80%) in less than or equal to 60 s and 0.5% hydrogen peroxide or 0.1% sodium hypochlorite within 1 minute. Additionally, glutaraldehyde (0.5–2%), formaldehyde (0.7–1%), and povidone-iodine (0.1–0.75%) could readily inactivate coronaviruses. Moreover, dry heat at 56°C, ultraviolet light dose of 0.2 to 140 J/cm2, and gamma irradiation could effectively inactivate coronavirus. The WHO recommends the use of 0.1% sodium hypochlorite solution or an ethanol-based disinfectant with an ethanol concentration between 62% and 71%. Conclusion. The results of the present study can help researchers, policymakers, health decision makers, and people perceive and take the correct measures to control and prevent further transmission of COVID-19. Prevention and decontamination will be the main ways to stop the ongoing outbreak of COVID-19.

Catalyst samples based on SiO2-supported TiO2 were prepared with the incorporation of Ag (metal), S (nonmetal), and ZnO@S (semiconductor and nonmetal). The materials were evaluated regarding their morphological, optical, and crystalline properties as well as their photoactivity under visible and ultraviolet light toward the degradation rate of a model emerging pollutant, acetaminophen (ACT). All modified materials exhibited improved performance over the undoped catalyst. The Ag-doped catalyst achieved the largest degradation under visible radiation (about 30% in 120 min), whereas under ultraviolet irradiation, the ZnO@S-doped sample exhibited the best performance (about 62% in 120 min). A Doehlert design was carried out to evaluate the influence of pH and temperature on the photoactivity of Ag-TiO2/SiO2. In addition, the role of each reactive species in the photodegradation reaction was investigated by radical scavenger experiments, and the superoxide radical anion O2•− was shown to be the predominant reactive species. The stability of the Ag-TiO2/SiO2 material under ultraviolet and visible light was confirmed after five successive operation cycles, showing a reasonable (about 50%) loss of activity under visible irradiation and a slight improvement (about 13%) under UV light, as a result of the photo-reduction of Ag+. Lastly, the effect of the initial pollutant concentration showed that ACT degradation using Ag-TiO2/SiO2 follows the Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics, with intrinsic reaction rate k = 2.71 × 10−4 mmol L−1 min−1 under visible-light radiation.

Aged skin is characterized by appearance of wrinkles, vascular lesions, hyperpigmentation, lentignes, texture, rhytides, and pores. These changes occur under the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic factors, as hormone alterations and exposure to ultraviolet light (UV) irradiation, respectively. Skin changes associated with aging have been assuming an important role in nowadays and bring to affect the quality of life. Intense Pulsed Light (ILP) is a noncollimated, polychromatic, and noncoherent non-surgical cosmetic therapy to skin rejuvenation. This is the first systematic review evaluating ILP treatment on skin rejuvenation evaluated by digital photographs and self-reported treatment efficacy. A PRISMA compliant review includes a search of the databases Scopus and PubMed. Sixteen studies treating 637 participants (with Fitzpatrick skin types I to IV and age varying from 21 to 80 years) were included. Patients were treated a mean of 4.29 sessions (range 3-7). The most studies results showed the efficacy of IPL treatment in telangiectasia, wrinkles, pore, erythema, rhytids, texture, lentigines, hiperpigmentation, and photoaging score. Six studies showed IPL-positive effects in association with other treatment and seven studies showed superior effect of other treatment or association to IPL with other treatment related to IPL alone. Nine studies showed low methodological quality. In conclusion, ILP treatment is effective on skin rejuvenation. However, there is no consensus about the parameters and future studies are needed to sample size limitations, made RCTs with low risk of bias, and improve the methodological quality its. Ga2O3 is a popular material for research on solar-blind ultraviolet detectors. However, its absorption cutoff edge is 253 nm, which is not an ideal cutoff edge of 280 nm. In this work, by adjusting the ratio of In/Ga elements in the films, a high-quality (In0.11Ga0.89)2O3 film with an absorption cutoff edge of 280 nm was obtained, which owns a uniform surface and preferred orientation. On this basis, a solar-blind ultraviolet photovoltaic detector was constructed based on the Pt/(In0.11Ga0.89)2O3/n-Si heterojunction. When the device is exposed to 254 nm UV light, its open-circuit voltage (VOC) can reach 354 mV. Under 0 V bias, the device has a responsivity of 0.48 mA/W with a rise time of 0.47 s and a decay time of 0.37 s; under -7 V bias, the device achieves a responsivity of 16.96 mA/W with a rise time of 0.17 s and a decay time of 0.33 s. The spectral response characteristics of the device show that it has a selective response to solar-blind ultraviolet light (cutoff wavelength is 280 nm) with a rejection ratio (R254 nm/R310 nm), which is greater by more than two orders of magnitude. This work provides a good reference for adjusting the band gap of Ga2O3-based films and broadening their application fields.

Cigarette and electronic cigarette use are significant public health concerns across the United States. Tobacco use remains the single most preventable cause of morbidity and mortality in the world. Electronic cigarettes initially emerged as a better alternative to conventional cigarettes and for promoting smoking cessation; however, current evidence reveals similar deleterious health implications caused by both products on almost all organ systems, including the skin. Recognition of the cutaneous manifestations associated with cigarette and electronic cigarette use is essential for dermatologists in current clinical practice. Dermatologists play a vital role in educating and counseling patients on smoking cessation. We specifically highlight the cutaneous consequences of conventional cigarette smoking and electronic cigarettes on dermatologic disease.

The role of vitamin D in the cardiovascular system is complex because it regulates expression of genes involved in diverse metabolic processes. Although referred to as a vitamin, it is more accurately considered a steroid hormone, because it is produced endogenously in the presence of ultraviolet light. It occurs as a series of sequentially activated forms, here referred to as vitamin D-hormones. A little-known phenomenon, based on pre-clinical data, is that its biodistribution and potential effects on vascular disease likely depend on whether it is derived from diet or sunlight. Diet-derived vitamin D-hormones are carried in the blood, at least in part, in chylomicrons and lipoprotein particles, including low-density lipoprotein. Since low-density lipoprotein is known to accumulate in the artery wall and atherosclerotic plaque, diet-derived vitamin D-hormones may also collect there, and possibly promote the osteochondrogenic mineralization associated with plaque. Also, little known is the fact that the body stores vitamin D-hormones in adipose tissue with a half-life on the order of months, raising doubts about whether the use of the term "daily requirement" is appropriate. Cardiovascular effects of vitamin D-hormones are controversial, and risk appears to increase with both low and high blood levels. Since low serum vitamin D-hormone concentration is reportedly associated with increased cardiovascular and orthopedic risk, oral supplementation is widely used, often together with calcium supplements. However, meta-analyses show that oral vitamin D-hormone supplementation does not protect against cardiovascular events, findings that are also supported by a randomized controlled trial. These considerations suggest that prevalent recommendations for vitamin D-hormone supplementation for the purpose of cardiovascular protection should be carefully reconsidered.

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition characterized by patches of abnormal skin. Currently, there is no cure for psoriasis, and treatment strategies aim to reduce the severity of symptoms. We report the case of a 71-year-old female with severe psoriasis under treatment with topical steroids, ultraviolet light, and immunosuppressants for 13 years. After receiving intravenous nutritional therapy, antihistamines, and adrenal extract, the patient experienced almost complete resolution of psoriatic patches on her body.

Coffee consumption over the past four years has continued to increase the amount of used coffee grounds. Usually, the used coffee grounds are simply thrown away. In fact, it can still be used as other materials that are more efficient and environmentally friendly, such as activated carbon. Activated carbon can be utilized as an adsorbent to adsorb compounds that are carcinogenic and potentially last a long time in the environment, such as phenols. Phenol decomposition through chemical can be carried out by Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) which utilize hydroxyl radicals. This method used a catalyst such as iron(III) oxide under ultraviolet light. Phenol decomposition can also be carried out using ultrasound. This study presents the performance of the combination of activated carbon-catalyst with ultrasound in phenol decomposition. The results showed that the mass of the composite influenced the 0.1 M phenol degradation by the activated carbon–iron(III) oxide assisted with ultraviolet light, ultrasound, and 0.01 M hydrogen peroxide. for 45 minutes. The best degradation of phenol was obtained when 0.5 g adsorbent was applied with the adsorption capacity of phenol was 704.37 mg/g. The concentration of hydrogen peroxide also affects the decomposition of phenol in solution. From the variation of the hydrogen peroxide solution used (0.01; 0.02; and 0.03 M), the optimal concentration in degrading phenol was 0.01 M with the adsorption capacity of phenol was 393.70 mg/g.

Photoaging induced by both ultraviolet and visible light has been shown to lead to increased inflammation and dysregulation of the extracellular matrix. Standardized extract of the Polypodium leucotomos fern, PLE, possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and has been shown to potentially mitigate photoaging through various mechanisms. This comprehensive review presents the data available on the effects of P. leucotomos extract on UV and VL-induced photoaging in vitro as well as in vivo in murine and human models.

Background Extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP), an apheresis-based therapy for various immunological diseases, works mainly by inducing apoptosis in lymphocytes. Several factors influence the efficacy of ECP with the photosensitizer 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) and ultraviolet light A (UVA). This study aimed to optimize treatment by varying the 8-MOP starting concentration and the cell suspension medium. Materials and Methods All patients (n = 13) included in this study received photopheresis as medically indicated. Cells collected with a Spectra Optia apheresis system were suspended in plasma or physiological saline (NaCl) and incubated with 200 ng/ml versus 340 ng/ml photosensitizer before UVA irradiation (Macogenic G2 or UVA PIT system). Lymphocyte apoptosis and caspase activity were analyzed by flow cytometry and fluorimetry, and residual 8-methoxypsoralen concentrations by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. Results Raising the 8-MOP starting concentration significantly increased lymphocyte apoptosis, with values of 22% versus 35% (plasma) and 28%–46% (NaCl) at 24 h post-ECP and 37% versus 86% (plasma) and 74% versus 97% (NaCl) at 48 h for 200 ng/ml versus 340 ng/ml. Pre-transfusion residual 8-MOP levels were 168 ng/ml (plasma) and 162 ng/ml (NaCl) versus 290 ng/ml (plasma) and 266 ng/ml (NaCl) for the lower versus higher dose, respectively. Discussion Hence, 8-MOP concentration influences the efficacy of photopheresis as lymphocyte apoptosis rates were significantly higher with the higher starting concentration and with NaCl versus plasma. This indicates that increased 8-MOP starting doses and saline as additional suspension medium could help in improving ECP's efficacy.

It is well known that ultraviolet light (UV) radiation is harmful to human health and affects the long-term stability of many organic materials. Besides, high-energy short-wavelength blue light (HEB) in the 400–450 nm range can penetrate the lens directly to the retina, causing visual damage. Therefore, these harmful solar radiations are pushing toward developing more efficient UV and HEB shielding materials. In this work, a design concept of highly transparent film with ideal UV/HEB shielding was brought forward. To achieve this concept, the UV absorbers and transparent yellow pigments with HEB filtering effect were selected as functional additives and introduced into plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) by melt blending to improve the UV/HEB shielding performance of PVC. Firstly, we demonstrated that benzotriazole UV absorber UV326 has the optimal UV shielding rate (98%) compared to other types of UV absorbers and further confirmed that the HEB filtering of more than 99% could be achieved by adding 0.5 phr transparent yellow pigments. Moreover, the combination of UV absorbers and transparent yellow pigments makes all samples show more than 99% shielding effect in UV and HEB regions. At the same time, the stable mechanical properties of plasticized PVC composite film make it have great application value in the fields of building windows, automobile glasses, electronic screen films, spectacle lenses and LED lampshades.

Bergapten is a natural furocoumarin, also known as 5-methoxypsoralen, and its medicinal value has been paid more and more attention. By sorting out the pharmacological literature of bergapten, we found that bergapten has a wide range of pharmacological effects, including neuroprotection, organ protection, anticancer, antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, and antidiabetes effects. However，bergapten has complex impacts on the hepatic metabolic enzyme. Moreover, pharmacokinetic studies showed that bergapten has higher absolute bioavailability and can cross the blood-brain barrier and has a great potential for treating brain disease, but the mechanism needs further clarification to make greater use of its ability to treat brain diseases. Furthermore, the phototoxicity of bergapten combined with ultraviolet light has always been mentioned. In view of its wide range of pharmacological activities, bergapten is expected to be a potential drug candidate for the treatment of diabetes and diabetes-induced osteoporosis, epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, depression, and cancer. However, further studies are needed to elucidate its molecular mechanisms and targets. The phototoxicity of bergapten as a side effect should be further avoided. On the other hand, the photoactivation of bergapten in the anticancer aspect can be better utilized.

Background The clinical effectiveness of ultraviolet light (UV) disinfection remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect of adding pulsed xenon UV (PX-UV) disinfection to the terminal cleaning protocol on the rate of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) acquisition at a Japanese hospital. Methods The use of a PX-UV disinfection device was added to the manual terminal cleaning protocol applied after the discharge or transfer of patients treated in the intensive and high care units. We used a Poisson regression model to examine the incidence of MRSA acquisition, based on the study period, PX-UV intervention status, unit type, and the rate of consumption of alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR). Results Approximately 86% of the rooms in the intervention units were terminally disinfected with the PX-UV device. In the intervention units, the incidence of MRSA acquisition decreased from 3.56 per 1,000 patient-days in the nonintervention period to 2.21 per 1,000 patient-days in the intervention period. Moreover, the use of PX-UV disinfection decreased the risk of MRSA acquisition (incident rate ratio: 0.556; 95% confidence interval, 0.309-0.999; P = .0497). ABHR consumption did not affect the risk of MRSA acquisition. Conclusions Adding PX-UV disinfection to terminal manual cleaning reduced the rate of MRSA acquisition.

Phytophotodermatitis is a cutaneous phototoxic reaction resulting from contact with plant compounds such as furocoumarin in citrus fruits, followed by exposure to ultraviolet light. Erythema and vesicles appear on the contact area, followed by hyperpigmented lesions. Hyperpigmentation may exist for weeks to months before fading but can remain up to several years. Diagnosis is often challenging due to the variety of clinical presentations, and it is not always easy to identify trigger exposures. A detailed history is key to diagnosis. We herein report a case of lime-induced phytophotodermatitis which was initially mistaken for unilateral lentiginosis. The patient underwent Q-switched Nd:YAG laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment with immediate improvement.

Radiating amorphous In–Ga–Zn–O (a-IGZO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) with deep ultraviolet light (λ = 175 nm) is found to induce rigid negative threshold-voltage shift, as well as a subthreshold hump and an increase in subthreshold-voltage slope. These changes are attributed to the photo creation and ionization of oxygen vacancy states (VO), which are confined mainly to the top surface of the a-IGZO film (backchannel). Photoionization of these states generates free electrons and the transition from the neutral to the ionized VO is accompanied by lattice relaxation, which raises the energy of the ionized VO. This and the possibility of atomic exchange with weakly bonded hydrogen leads to metastability of the ionized VO, consistent with the rigid threshold-voltage shift and increase in subthreshold-voltage slope. The hump is thus a manifestation of the highly conductive backchannel and its formation can be suppressed by reduction of the a-IGZO film thickness or application of a back bias after radiation. These results support photo creation and ionization of VO as the main cause of light instability in a-IGZO TFTs and provide some insights on how to minimize the effect.

Background Melanin plays important roles in determining human skin color and protecting human skin cells against harmful ultraviolet light. However, abnormal hyperpigmentation in some areas of the skin may become aesthetically unpleasing, resulting in the need for effective agents or methods to regulate undesirable hyperpigmentation. Objective We investigated the effect of harmine, a natural harmala alkaloid belonging to the beta-carboline family, on melanin synthesis and further explored the signaling pathways involved in its mechanism of action. Methods Human MNT-1 melanoma cells and human primary melanocytes were treated with harmine, chemical inhibitors, small interfering RNAs, or mammalian expression vectors. Cell viability, melanin content, and expression of various target molecules were assessed. Results Harmine decreased melanin synthesis and tyrosinase expression in human MNT-1 melanoma cells. Inhibition of DYRK1A, a harmine target, decreased melanin synthesis and tyrosinase expression. Further studies revealed that nuclear translocation of NFATC3, a potential DYRK1A substrate, was induced via the harmine/DYRK1A pathway and that NFATC3 knockdown increased melanin synthesis and tyrosinase expression. Suppression of melanin synthesis and tyrosinase expression via the harmine/DYRK1A pathway was significantly attenuated by NFATC3 knockdown. Furthermore, harmine also decreased melanin synthesis and tyrosinase expression through regulation of NFATC3 in human primary melanocytes. Conclusion Our results indicate that harmine decreases melanin synthesis through regulation of the DYRK1A/NFATC3 pathway and suggest that the DYRK1A/NFATC3 pathway may be a potential target for the development of depigmenting agents.

Several trials for the COVID-19 pandemic are found. Prof. Shunji Nakamura, Tokushima University was awarded the 2014 Nobel prize in Physics for light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Deep ultraviolet LED (DUV-LED) causes SARS-CoV-2 inactivation as 99.9% by 265 nm. Gc protein-derived macrophage-activating factor (GcMAF)-based immunotherapy has a wider application for serious infection, chronic fatigue syndrome, and cancers. Covid center in Naples submitted a phase II report concerning GcMAF and COVID-19 in Feb 2021. 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) and its metabolite protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) show anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects for Zika, Dengue, influenza A viruses, and SARS-CoV-2. These results hopefully contribute to the research development for COVID-19.

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study is to compare the sterility of three C-Arm draping techniques: the clip-drape, sterile pouch, and a novel drape tower method. We hypothesize that our novel technique will minimize floor contamination from reaching the surgical field while allowing the C-Arm machine to rotate between lateral and anterior-posterior positions more quickly. METHODS Five trials consisting of rotating the C-Arm and simulating surgeon movement were run using each technique. Ultraviolet light illuminating melamine powder was used to represent floor contamination. Measurements of melamine powder encroachment on the drapes were taken using the top of the C-Arm in lateral position as the reference point. The time needed to assemble, deploy, and retract the C-Arm was measured for each technique. The gown, gloves, and mayo stand were also examined after each trial for contamination. By the self-assemble reaction of tri(2-carboxyethyl)isocyanurate (H3tci) and Ni(NO3)2·6H2O under solvothermal conditions, a new Ni(II) compound has been successfully prepared and structurally characterized, and its chemical formula is [Ni5(μ3-OH)2(NO3)2(tci)2(DMA)4]n (1). The optical band gap (Eg) of 1 is 3.4 eV, which makes it exhibit photocatalytic effect for the MB degradation under the irradiation of ultraviolet light with 88.41% MB successful removal within 120 min. Its application values on the acute ischemic myocardial infarction were assessed and its detailed mechanism was also investigated. Firstly, the inflammatory cytokines levels were released into the plasma during acute myocardial infarction after treated with the ELISA detection kit. Moreover, the real-time RT-PCR assay was carried out for the measurement of the lncRNA-ZFAS1 relative expression levels. Above all, we can get the conclusion that the compound possesses excellent application value on the ischemic myocardial infarction treatment through regulating expression level of lncRNA-ZFAS1.

ObjectiveTo estimate the incidence of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) in patients with psoriasis who had received a continuous treatment with biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) compared with phototherapy.MethodsA retrospective non-randomised study involving patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis, who were prescribed at least 5 years of bDMARDs or at least three narrow-band ultraviolet light B (nb-UVB) phototherapy courses, and did not have a diagnosis of PsA at enrolment. Development of PsA in each patient was assessed by a rheumatologist according to the Classification for Psoriatic Arthritis criteria. The annual and cumulative incidence rate of PsA was estimated by using an event per person-years analysis. Cox proportional hazards models were undertaken to assess the hazard risk (HR) of PsA after adjustment for confounders.ResultsA total of 464 psoriatic patients (bDMARDs, n=234 and nb-UVB, n=230) were followed between January 2012 and September 2020 (corresponding to 1584 and 1478 person year of follow-up for the two groups, respectively). The annual incidence rate of PsA was 1.20 cases (95% CI 0.77 to 1.89) versus 2.17 cases (95% CI 1.53 to 3.06) per 100 patients/year in the bDMARDs versus phototherapy group, respectively (HR 0.29, 0.12–0.70; p=0.006). The variables independently associated with higher risk of PsA were older age (adjusted HR 1.04, 1.02–1.07), nail psoriasis (adjusted HR 3.15, 1.63–6.06) and psoriasis duration >10 years (adjusted HR 2.02, 1.09–3.76); notably, bDMARDs treatment was associated with a lower risk of incident PsA (adjusted HR 0.27, 0.11–0.66).ConclusionsbDMARDs treatment may delay or reduce the risk of incident PsA in patients with moderate-to-severe chronic plaque psoriasis.

PURPOSE: Skin and soft tissue infections are increasingly prevalent and often complicated by potentially fatal therapeutic hurdles, such as poor drug perfusion and antibiotic resistance. Delivery vehicles capable of versatile loading may improve local bioavailability and minimize systemic toxicities yet such vehicles are not clinically available. Therefore, we aimed to expand upon the use of glutathione-conjugated poly(ethylene glycol) GSH-PEG hydrogels beyond protein delivery and evaluate the ability to deliver traditional therapeutic molecules. METHODS: PEG and GSH-PEG hydrogels were prepared using ultraviolet light (UV)-polymerization. Hydrogel loading and release of selected drug candidates was examined using UV-visible spectrometry. Therapeutic molecules and GST-fusion protein loading was examined using UV-visible and fluorescent spectrometry. Efficacy of released meropenem was assessed against meropenem-sensitive and -resistant P. aeruginosa in an agar diffusion bioassay. RESULTS: For all tested agents, GSH-PEG hydrogels demonstrated time-dependent loading whereas PEG hydrogels did not. GSH-PEG hydrogels released meropenem over 24 hours. Co-loading of biologic and traditional therapeutics into a single vehicle was successfully demonstrated. Meropenem-loaded GSH-PEG hydrogels inhibited the growth of meropenem-sensitive and resistant P. aeruginosa isolates. CONCLUSION: GSH ligands within GSH-PEG hydrogels allow loading and effective delivery of charged therapeutic agents, in addition to biologic therapeutics.

Background The increase in cardiovascular disease cases that require minimally invasive treatment is inducing a new need to train physicians to perform them safely and effectively. Nevertheless, adaptation to simulation-based training has been slow, especially for complex procedures. Objectives We describe a newly developed mitral valve repair (MVR) simulator, equipped with new objective performance assessment methods, with an emphasis on its use for training the MitraClip™ procedure. Methods The MVR contains phantoms of all anatomical structures encountered during mitral valve repair with a transvenous, transseptal approach. In addition, several cameras, line lasers, and ultraviolet lights are used to mimic echocardiographic and fluoroscopic imaging and with a remote eye tracker the cognitive behaviour of the operator is recorded. A pilot study with a total of 9 interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and technical experts was conducted. All participants performed the MitraClip procedure on the MVR simulator using standard interventional tools. Subsequently, each participant completed a structured questionnaire to assess the simulator. Results The simulator functioned well, and the implemented objective performance assessment methods worked reliably. Key performance metrics such as x-ray usage were comparable with results from studies assessing these metrics in real interventions. Fluoroscopy imaging is realistic for the transseptal puncture but reaches its limits during the final steps of the procedure. Conclusion The functionality and objective performance assessment of the MVR simulator were demonstrated. Dipeptidyl-peptidase 4 (DPP4) is a multifunctional type II transmembrane glycoprotein that is expressed on various cell surfaces. While DPP4 inhibitors have a therapeutic role in the treatment of diabetes mellitus, they are an independent risk factor in the development of bullous pemphigoid. Contrarily, there are reports of improvement in psoriasis with DPP4 inhibition. We investigated the effect of DPP4 inhibition on primary human keratinocytes to determine whether DPP4 modulates keratinocyte inflammatory signaling and keratinocyte homeostasis. We performed RNA sequencing of primary adult human keratinocytes treated with DPP4 inhibitor, identifying 424 differentially expressed genes. Gene ontology analysis revealed significant enrichment of epidermal differentiation and cornified envelope genes. Using three-dimensional organotypic cultures and a pan-late cornified envelope 2 (LCE2) antibody, we demonstrate a dose dependent relationship between DPP4 inhibition and increased expression of LCE2 during epidermal development. The late cornified envelope gene clusters are expressed at the late stages of epithelial development, responding to stimuli such as calcium and ultraviolet light. While its biologic function is not fully understood, mutations in LCE3B/LCE3C confer a 40% increased risk in the development of plaque psoriasis. While we did not identify significant modulation of keratinocyte inflammatory markers, DPP4 inhibition increased expression of the late cornified envelope may offer a potential alternative therapeutic mechanism in psoriasis.

Harvested mature berry clusters of two white table grape cultivars were used to study the effects of postharvest UV irradiation. One cultivar, 'Queen of Vineyard' (QV), had higher light-acclimated PSII quantum yield, higher phenolic contents, and stronger total antioxidant capacities than the other, 'White Sultana' (WS). These differences were maintained throughout the experiment. Responses of the two cultivars to a 30-min UV irradiation were also different. Antioxidant capacities and flavonol, especially quercetin-3-O-glucuronide, contents were lower 2 h after the UV treatment in both cultivars and recovered in QV but not in WS berry skins later on. Our data demonstrate that mature grapevine berries have photosynthetically active tissues capable of dynamic changes even several hours after harvest and suggest that changes in photochemistry may contribute to postharvest metabolic responses of berry skins. Results also support the potential of postharvest manipulation of fruit qualities with UV irradiation.

Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic has had an unprecedented impact on health care and cardiac surgery. We report cardiac surgeons' concerns, perceptions, and responses during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Methods A detailed survey was sent to recruit participating adult cardiac surgery centers in North America. Data regarding cardiac surgeons' perceptions and changes in practice were analyzed. Results Our study comprises 67 institutions with diverse geographic distribution across North America. Nurses were most likely to be redeployed (88%), followed by advanced care practitioners (69%), trainees (28%), and surgeons (25%). Examining surgeon concerns in regard to COVID‐19, they were most worried with exposing their family to COVID‐19 (81%), followed by contracting COVID‐19 (68%), running out of personal protective equipment (PPE) (28%), and hospital resources (28%). In terms of PPE conservation strategies among users of N95 respirators, nearly half were recycling via decontamination with ultraviolet light (49%), followed by sterilization with heat (13%) and at home or with other modalities (13%). Reuse of N95 respirators for 1 day (22%), 1 week (21%) or 1 month (6%) was reported. There were differences in adoption of methods to conserve N95 respirators based on institutional pandemic phase and COVID‐19 burden, with higher COVID‐19 burden institutions more likely to resort to PPE conservation strategies. Conclusions The present study demonstrates the impact of COVID‐19 on North American cardiac surgeons. Our study should stimulate further discussions to identify optimal solutions to improve workforce preparedness for subsequent surges, as well as facilitate the navigation of future healthcare crises.

A novel photocatalytic continuous system has been proposed for the treatment of tannery waste water, which has high levels of environmental pollutants. The purification process was performed by passing wastewater on a titanium dioxide (TiO2)-coated surface, which is continuously activated by irradiation of ultraviolet light. To improve the yield of the process, ferric chloride (FeCl3) was used as a coagulation agent. The organic and inorganic compounds, as well as the microorganisms in the tannery wastewater media, were degraded through a photocatalytic process. The results revealed that total dissolved solids and total suspended solids contents were significantly decreased from 8,450 and 8,990 mg·L−1 to 4,032 and 4,127 mg·L−1, respectively. Furthermore, the chemical oxygen demand content of the sample was reduced from 370 to 50 mg·L−1 after the addition of 100 mL of FeCl3 and 4 h of treatment. The same results were observed for the elimination of sulfate and chromium ions, which led to a decline in electrical conductivity. This suggests that introducing 100 mL of FeCl3 as the coagulation agent and continuous treatment with photocatalityc set-up could be considered as an effective method for the purification of tannery wastewaters. Background Mobile phones may be contaminated with nosocomial pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The aim of this study was to investigate the MRSA contamination rate on doctors’ hospital-use-only mobile phones and the efficacy of 222-nm ultraviolet light (UV) disinfection. Methods We investigated the MRSA contamination rate of doctors’ hospital-use-only mobile phones, as well as the reduction in MRSA counts on plastic plates and aerobic bacteria (AB) on mobile phones before and after exposure to 222-nm UV irradiation. Results Five (10%) of the 50 mobile phones investigated were contaminated with MRSA. Exposure to 0.1 mJ/cm2 222-nm UVC irradiation for 1.5 and 2.5 min (9 and 15 mJ/cm2) achieved mean log10 MRSA colony-forming units reductions of 2.91 and 3.95, respectively. Exposure to 9 mJ/cm2 222-nm UVC irradiation (0.1 mW/cm2 for 1.5 minutes) significantly reduced AB contamination on mobile phones (P Conclusions The use of 222-nm UV disinfection resulted in effective in vitro reduction of MRSA and significantly reduced AB contamination of mobile phone surfaces.

Ultraviolet light C-region (UV-C) has been used for the disinfection of surfaces, water, and foods. Recently, Salmonellosis cases have been associated with the consumption of low moisture products, such as wheat flour and nuts. In this study, peanuts and almonds inoculated with around 107 CFU/g of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium ATCC 14028 were subjected to 2.5–30 min UV-C treatments (254 nm, 10 mW/cm2, 10 cm between food and lamp). No reduction in the bacterium population was observed after 2.5 and 5 min for both nuts. Reductions of 0.68 and 2.39 log-cycles were observed after 30 min of treatment of peanuts and almonds, respectively. Weibull distribution described the inactivation of S. Typhimurium. After 30 min UV-C treatment, the temperature of peanuts and almonds increased 7.3 and 8.0°C, respectively, confirming that UV-C treatment is a non-thermal process. Water activity, color, and peroxides values were not affected by UV-C treatments (p > 0.05). UV-C light under the studied conditions was more effective for the treatment of almonds than peanuts. However, for both nuts, additional treatment conditions should be assessed to reach higher Salmonella inactivation values.

Nanophotonic devices, composed of metals, dielectrics, or semiconductors, enable precise and high-spatial-resolution manipulation of electromagnetic waves by leveraging diverse light–matter interaction mechanisms at subwavelength length scales. Their compact size, light weight, versatile functionality and unprecedented performance are rapidly revolutionizing how optical devices and systems are constructed across the infrared, visible, and ultraviolet spectra. Here, we review recent advances and future opportunities of nanophotonic elements operating in the ultraviolet spectral region, which include plasmonic devices, optical metamaterials, and optical metasurfaces. We discuss their working principles, material platforms, fabrication, and characterization techniques, followed by representative device applications across various interdisciplinary areas such as imaging, sensing and spectroscopy. We conclude this review by elaborating on future opportunities and challenges for ultraviolet nanophotonic devices.

Ultraviolet radiation and visible light both have biologic effects on the skin. Visible light can induce erythema in light-skinned individuals and pigmentation in dark-skinned individuals. Broad-spectrum sunscreens protect against ultraviolet radiation but do not adequately protect against visible light. For a sunscreen to protect against visible light, it must be visible on the skin. Inorganic filters (also known as mineral filters), namely, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, are used in the form of nanoparticles in sunscreens to minimize the chalky and white appearance on the skin; as such, they do not protect against visible light. Tinted sunscreens use different formulations and concentrations of iron oxides and pigmentary titanium dioxide to provide protection against visible light. Many shades of tinted sunscreens are available by combining different amounts of iron oxides and pigmentary titanium dioxide to cater to all skin phototypes. Therefore, tinted sunscreens are beneficial for patients with visible light-induced photodermatoses and those with hyperpigmentation disorders such as melasma and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation.

8-methoxypsoralen is the most common drug in psoralen plus ultraviolet light irradiation therapy for the treatment of severe psoriasis. Despite of the efficacy, its classic oral administration leads to several serious adverse effects. However, the topical psoralen application produces a drug skin accumulation lower than that obtained by oral administration, due to the drug low skin permeability. In this paper, 8-methoxypsoralen loaded Penetration Enhancer-containing Vesicles were prepared using soy phosphatidylcholine and the penetration enhancer Transcutol® (5% or 10%) and characterized in terms of size, polydispersity index, zeta potential and encapsulation efficiency. No statistically significant differences in both size (~135 nm) and encapsulation efficiency (~65%) were found for different Transcutol® concentration. Transdermal delivery study assessed by Franz diffusion cells, showed that the 8-methoxypsoralen mainly accumulated into the stratum corneum. Moreover, after Penetration Enhancer-containing Vesicles application, the drug recovered in this layer is almost double of that delivered by conventional liposomes, while no significant difference was found from the different Transcutol® concentrations. Finally, biocompatibility checked by an MTT assay, demonstrated that the incubation of human keratinocytes for 24 h with 8-methoxypsoralen loaded Penetration Enhancer-containing Vesicles did not significantly reduce cell viability.
