Nowadays the military toxicology becomes a division of a science that is to solve both academic and applied problems for a medical support system development necessary for the troops chemical defence and security in peace and war. As a classroom discipline it is to train military medics for a wide circle of toxicological issues' solution in the future.

The medicolegal medical toxicologist is described: What they do, what toxicology is, how the toxicologist moves in a world of regulations, chemicals, differential diagnosis, and treatment of poisoning; his or her knowledge as an expert witness in evaluation of serious adverse drug reactions, medical malpractice, and poisoning cases; and the toxicologist's awareness of the role of alcohol, the problem of causation of death, and the limitations of the laboratory are discussed.

Examines the need for a science of toxicology and training at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in response to legislation controlling drugs, food additives and toxic substances in the work environment, and concern about effects on man. Stresses need for putting toxicology on a scientific base with adequate funding. (JM)

Abstract Environmental risk assessment (ERA) is critical for protecting life by predicting population responses to contaminants. However, routine toxicity testing often examines only one genotype from surrogate species, potentially leading to inaccurate risk assessments, as natural populations typically consist of genetically diverse individuals. To evaluate the importance of intraspecific variation in translating toxicity testing to natural populations, we quantified the magnitude of phenotypic variation between 20 Daphnia magna clones exposed to two levels of microcystins, a cosmopolitan cyanobacterial toxin. We observed significant genetic variation in survival, growth, and reproduction, which increased under microcystins exposure. Simulations of survival showed that using a single genotype for toxicity tolerance estimates on average failed to produce accurate predictions within the 95% confidence interval over half of the time. Whole genome sequencing of the 20 clones tested for correlations between toxicological responses and genomic divergence, including candidate loci from prior gene expression studies. We found no overall correlations, indicating that clonal variation, rather than variation at candidate genes, predicts population-level responses to toxins. These results highlight the importance of incorporating broad intraspecific genetic variation, without focusing specifically on variation in candidate genes, into ERAs to more reliably predict how local populations will respond to contaminants.

Introduction: A poison is a substance that causes serious illness and endangers the life of a person when ingested in a relatively small quantity. Poisoning is one of the most common problems encountered in day-to-day clinical practice. Poisoning causes morbidity and mortality which can be prevented and managed if clinicians are sensitized with adequate knowledge of common poisons. Therefore, this study was conducted to know the profile of acute poisoning cases admitted in a tertiary care hospital in Mangaluru. Materials and Methods: 100 patients admitted in the intensive care units and wards of the General Medicine department, Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru, and Government Wenlock District Hospital, Mangaluru with various poisoning were evaluated for various factors like the distribution of poisoning cases according to age, gender, intention of poisoning, nature of poisons consumed and the nature of treatment received at another hospital before getting admitted. Results: Most of the cases of poisoning occurred in the age group between 21-30 years of age (38%). The majority of the patients in the study were males (60%) and females formed 40% of the study population. The majority of patients in this study (99%) consumed poison with suicidal intention. 77% of patients received first-aid treatment in a peripheral hospital before getting admitted to our hospital. Conclusion: This study shows that the peak incidence of acute poisoning cases was seen in the age group of 21 to 30 years with male predominance. The pattern of poisoning was suicidal in the majority of the patients.

Abstract This study focuses on developing machine learning models to detect subtle alterations in hepatocyte chromatin organization due to Iron (II, III) oxide nanoparticle exposure, hypothesizing that exposure will significantly alter chromatin texture. A total of 2000 hepatocyte nuclear regions of interest (ROIs) from mouse liver tissue were analyzed, and for each ROI, 5 different parameters were calculated: Long Run Emphasis, Short Run Emphasis, Run Length Nonuniformity, and 2 wavelet coefficient energies obtained after the discrete wavelet transform. These parameters served as input for supervised machine learning models, specifically random forest and gradient boosting classifiers. The models demonstrated relatively robust performance in distinguishing hepatocyte chromatin structures belonging to the group exposed to IONPs from the controls. The study's findings suggest that iron oxide nanoparticles induce substantial changes in hepatocyte chromatin distribution and underscore the potential of AI techniques in advancing hepatocyte evaluation in physiological and pathological conditions.

Dittrichia viscosa is a perennial herb that has been used for generations in traditional medicine to address a variety of diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, cancer, microbial disorders, inflammatory conditions, and wound healing. The objective of this review is to provide an overview of existing knowledge on D. viscosa with regards to its botanical description, ethnomedicinal uses, and pharmacological properties. Databases such as Scopus, Wiley-Online, PubMed, Springer, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect were used to select relevant articles based on their title and abstract.The reviewed studies found a strong correlation between D. viscosa's traditional uses and its observed biological effects. Pharmacological research has shown that the essential oils and extracts from D. viscosa possess a variety of biological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, analgesic, and antioxidant properties. The chemical compounds found in D. viscosa include sesquiterpenes, monoterpenes, flavonoids, and phenolic acids; some of these compounds, such as tometosin and inuviscolide, have been isolated and displayed promising cytotoxic and anti-inflammatory activity.The present review suggests that the pharmacological properties of D. viscosa align well with its ethnomedicinal uses. These findings support the traditional use of D. viscosa in treating various illnesses. Additionally, toxicological examinations of D. viscosa extracts and essential oil have demonstrated the plant's safety, which supports the need for comprehensive pharmacological studies, in vivo studies, and clinical trials to evaluate the best doses for optimal medicinal effects. This work underscores the medicinal value of D. viscosa and its potential in developing new pharmacological agents to address major health challenges like antibiotic resistance and cancers.

Abstract Woodsmoke (WS) exposure is associated with significant health-related sequelae. Different populations can potentially exhibit varying susceptibility, based on endocrine phenotypes, to WS and investigating neurological impacts following inhaled WS is a growing area of research. In this study, a whole-body inhalation chamber was used to expose both male and female C57BL/6 mice (n = 8 per group) to either control filtered air (FA) or acute WS (0.861 ± 0.210 mg/m3) for 4 h/d for 2 days. Neuroinflammatory and lipid-based biological markers were then assessed. In a second set of studies, female mice were divided into two groups: one group was ovariectomized (OVX) to simulate an ovarian hormone-deficient state (surgical menopause), and the other underwent Sham surgery as controls, to mechanistically assess the impact of ovarian hormone presence on neuroinflammation following FA and acute WS exposure to simulate an acute wildfire episode. There was a statistically significant impact of sex (P ≤ 0.05) and statistically significant interactions between sex and treatment in IL-1β, CXCL-1, TGF-β, and IL-6 brain relative gene expression. Hippocampal and cortex genes also exhibited significant changes in acute WS-exposed Sham and OVX mice, particularly in TGF-β (hippocampus) and CCL-2 and CXCL-1 (cortex). Cortex GFAP optical density (OD) showed a notable elevation in male mice exposed to acute WS, compared to the control FA. Sham and OVX females demonstrated differential GFAP expression, depending on brain region. Overall, targeted lipidomics in phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) serum and brain lipids demonstrated more significant changes between control FA and acute WS exposure in female mice, compared to males. In summary, male and female mice show distinct neuroinflammatory markers in response to acute WS exposure. Furthermore, ovarian hormone deficiency may impact the neuroinflammatory response following an acute WS event.

In recent years, advances in nanotechnology have significantly influenced electronics manufacturing, industrial processes, and medical research. Various industries have seen a surge in the use of nanomaterials. However, several researchers have raised the alarm about the toxicological nature of nanomaterials, which appear to be quite different from their crude forms. This altered nature can be attributed to their unique physicochemical profile. They can adversely affect human health and the environment. Nanomaterials that have been released into the environment tend to accumulate over time and can cause a significant impact on the ecosystem and organisms with adverse health effects. Increased use of nanoparticles has led to increased human exposure in their daily lives, making them more vulnerable to nanoparticle toxicity. Because of their small size, nanomaterials can readily cross biological membranes and enter cells, tissues, and organs. Therefore, the effect of nanomaterials on the human environment is of particular concern. The toxicological effects of nanomaterials and their mechanisms of action are being researched worldwide. Technological advances also support monitoring new nanomaterials marketed for industrial and household purposes. It is a challenging area because of the exceptional physicochemical properties of nanomaterials. This updated review focuses on the diverse toxicological perspective of nanomaterials. We have discussed the use of different types of nanoparticles and their physiochemical properties responsible for toxicity, routes of exposure, bio-distribution, and mechanism of toxicity. The review also includes various in vivo and in vitro methods of assessing the toxicity of nanomaterials. Finally, this review will provide a detailed insight into nano material-induced toxicological response, which can be beneficial in designing safe and effective nanoparticles.

The skin is the most vulnerable organ when spraying pesticides on fields. Farmers are also exposed to pesticides during mixing, loading of pesticides, and when cleaning equipment and disposing of empty containers. The aim. To study and analyze the features of the risk of pesticides dermal exposure to professional contingents during treatments using the innovative 3RIVE 3D pesticide application technology. Materials and methods. The 3RIVE 3D innovative technological system of introducing was used to applicate Brigade 3Rive 3D, SC formulation. Field experiments on the study of working conditions when using the pesticide were conducted in various soil and climatic regions of Eastern Europe. Statistical processing of the results was carried out using a package of licensed statistical programs IBM SPSS StatisticsBase v.22 and MS Excel. Research results and discussion. During the conducted research, no bifenthrin contamination was found on the open skin of the operator and the tractor driver, who were processing corn crops with the Brigade 3Rive 3D, SC formulation. However, the operator's gloves were found to contain 0.025 mg of bifenthrin. Calculation of the unitless CASd value on the possibility of skin acute effects when applying the formulation showed that bifenthrin and the Brigade 3Rive 3D, SC formulation based on it are characterized by sufficient selectivity of action on the target object (CASd – 645 and 162, respectively, i.e. > 100) and a low level of danger acute dermal toxic effects for workers, which is due to low values of effective consumption rates. The real dermal risk of bifenthrin exposure when using the Brigade 3Rive3D, SC formulation was significantly lower compared to the risk of workers involved in “traditional” air treatment and treatment with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) (p=0.009-0.048 according to Wilcoxon's W-criterion); in comparison with rod and fan processing – it is non-significantly lower (р=0.262-1.000). There was a similar picture in comparison with the dermal aggravated risk – significantly lower in comparison with the risk of workers involved in “traditional” air treatment and processing with the help of UAVs (p=0.009 according to Wilcoxon's W-criterion); in comparison with rod and fan treatment – non-significantly lower (р=0.262-1.000). Conclusion. It was established that the studied active substance bifenthrin and the Brigade 3Rive 3D, SC formulation based on it are characterized by sufficient selectivity of dermal action on the target object and a low probability of acute dermal effects. A higher probability of acute inhalation poisoning than dermal exposure was revealed.

Background: In Bundelkhand region, 15–18% patients who are attended in the emergency setting comprises poisoning and 60–70% of which are agriculture-based poisons due to its easy accessibility. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this study was to see spectrum of poisoning in Bundelkhand region. Materials and Methods: The prospective non-randomized study was done in Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College, Jhansi, between December 2020 and October 2022, including 500 patients applied for treatment of different poisoning. Results: In our study, total 500 cases of poisoning were taken. As per found data, majority of patients were found in 17–30 years of age group 202 (40.4%) followed by 31–40 years of age group 157 (31.4%). Minimum 19 (3.8%) cases were found in 61–70 years of age group and 0 case in >70 years of age group. Majority of patients were found male, i.e., 281 (56.2%) and the rest 219 (43.8%) were females. According to finding of our study, maximum mortality rate was found due to Stone hair dye, i.e., 100% followed by Celphos 35.54%, Insecticidal 26.92%, and Alcoholic intoxication 22.22%. As per our study, major cause of taking poison, maximum number of patients were found in marital discord 108 (21.6%) followed by family problems, i.e., 75 (15%), which is similar to separation/death of family member, that is, 74 (14.8%). Conclusion: Concerned authorities should think about substitute of aluminum phosphide, which would be less toxic for human being and concerned authority should ban availability of aluminum phosphide (Celphos) in market.

In order to address safety concerns related to the acquisition and utilization of TiO2 and TiO2@Ag nanomaterials, as well as to investigate their disinfectant and biological effects, the structural-morphological, morpho­metry, toxicological, cytotoxic, and virucidal properties of these specified nanomaterials have been studied through experiments conducted on laboratory animals and in vitro. It has been demonstrated that the TiO2@Ag nanocomposite exhibited distinct physicochemical characteristics: it consisted of TiO2 nanoparticles ranging in size from 13 nm to 20 nm and Ag nanoparticles ranging from 35 nm to 40 nm with 4.0 wt% of silver localized on the surface of titanium dioxide. The purity of the modification of synthesized nano-TiO2 and nano-TiO2@Ag has been confirmed. Acute intraperitoneal administration of nanopowders revealed LD50 values of 4783.30 mg/kg for nano-TiO2 and 724.44 mg/kg for nano-TiO2@Ag. A slight accumulation was observed upon repeated (28-fold) intragastric administration of nano-TiO2. The cumulative dose administered, which equated to 15.9 multiples of the LD50 (76040 mg/kg), did not result in animal mortality but led to retardation in body weight gain. TiO2 and TiO2@Ag nanopowders do not irritate the skin, induce mild conjunctival irritation, and may exhibit a weak sensitizing effect. Nano-TiO2 and nano-TiO2@Ag powders accumulate in the tissues of internal organs and cause damage to the liver, kidneys, and lungs of laboratory animals upon intraperitoneal administration. The most characteristic morphological signs of the toxic effect of nano-TiO2 on liver tissue were observed at a level of 67.7% (cytoplasmic vacuolization in hepatocytes), while in the case of nano-TiO2@Ag initial necrotic changes were at a level of 70.0% (hepatocytes with pyknotic nuclei). Based on the 87 original publications only from quartiles 1 and 2 of Journal Citation Report (JCR) collected by the major academic databases (Science Direct, Web of Science, PubMed, and Wiley) in 2022, the frontier of toxicology studies in zebrafish model is summarized. Herewith, a total of six aspects is covered such as developmental, neurological, cardiovascular, hepatic, reproductive, and immunizing toxicities. The tested samples involve chemicals, drugs, new environmental pollutants, nanomaterials, and its derivatives, along with those related mechanisms. This report may provide a frontier focus benefit to researchers engaging in a zebrafish model for environment, medicine, food, and other fields. Objective To investigate the toxicokinetic differences of 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine （MDMA） and its metabolite 4,5-methylene dioxy amphetamine （MDA） in rats after single and continuous administration of MDMA, providing reference data for the forensic identification of MDMA. Methods A total of 24 rats in the single administration group were randomly divided into 5, 10 and 20 mg/kg experimental groups and the control group, with 6 rats in each group. The experimental group was given intraperitoneal injection of MDMA, and the control group was given intraperitoneal injection of the same volume of normal saline as the experimental group. The amount of 0.5 mL blood was collected from the medial canthus 5 min, 30 min, 1 h, 1.5 h, 2 h, 4 h, 6 h, 8 h, 10 h, 12 h after administration. In the continuous administration group, 24 rats were randomly divided into the experimental group （18 rats） and the control group （6 rats）. The experimental group was given MDMA 7 d by continuous intraperitoneal injection in increments of 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 mg/kg per day, respectively, while the control group was given the same volume of normal saline as the experimental group by intraperitoneal injection. On the eighth day, the experimental rats were randomly divided into 5, 10 and 20 mg/kg dose groups, with 6 rats in each group. MDMA was injected intraperitoneally, and the control group was injected intraperitoneally with the same volume of normal saline as the experimental group. On the eighth day, 0.5 mL of blood was taken from the medial canthus 5 min, 30 min, 1 h, 1.5 h, 2 h, 4 h, 6 h, 8 h, 10 h, 12 h after administration. Liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry was used to detect MDMA and MDA levels, and statistical software was employed for data analysis. Results In the single-administration group, peak concentrations of MDMA and MDA were reached at 5 min and 1 h after administration, respectively, with the largest detection time limit of 12 h. In the continuous administration group, peak concentrations were reached at 30 min and 1.5 h after administration, respectively, with the largest detection time limit of 10 h. Nonlinear fitting equations for the concentration ratio of MDMA and MDA in plasma and administration time in the single-administration group and continuous administration group were as follows: T=10.362C-1.183, R2=0.974 6; T=7.397 3C-0.694, R2=0.961 5 （T: injection time; C: concentration ratio of MDMA to MDA in plasma）. Conclusions The toxicokinetic data of MDMA and its metabolite MDA in rats, obtained through single and continuous administration, including peak concentration, peak time, detection time limit, and the relationship between concentration ratio and administration time, provide a theoretical and data foundation for relevant forensic identification.

Objective To establish a rapid screening method for 34 emerging contaminants in surface water by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry （UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS）. Methods The pretreatment conditions of solid phase extraction （SPE） were optimized by orthogonal experimental design and the surface water samples were concentrated and extracted by Oasis® HLB and Oasis® MCX SPE columns in series. The extracts were separated by Kinetex® EVO C18 column， with gradient elution of 0.1% formic acid aqueous solution and 0.1% formic acid methanol solution. Q-TOF-MS ‘fullscan’ and ‘targeted MS/MS’ modes were used to detect 34 emerging contaminants and to establish a database with 34 emerging contaminants precursor ion， product ion and retention times. Results The 34 emerging contaminants exhibited good linearity in the concentration range respectively and the correlation coefficients （r） were higher than 0.97. The limit of detection was 0.2-10 ng/L and the recoveries were 81.2%-119.2%. The intra-day precision was 0.78%-18.70%. The method was applied to analyze multiple surface water samples and 6 emerging contaminants were detected， with a concentration range of 1.93-157.71 ng/L. Conclusion The method is simple and rapid for screening various emerging contaminants at the trace level in surface water.

Veterinary toxicology is one of the subspecialties of veterinary medicine. On the other hand, traditional medical sources also contain veterinary knowledge, entailing human medical information. In this study, we aimed to extract and present relevant information on the part of the history of veterinary medicine, especially veterinary toxicology, through research on Al-Razi’s book Al-Hawi fi Al-Tib. We queried keywords of poison, poisoning, animal, and related terms in Al-Hawi fi Al-Tib. Also, we searched international and domestic databases, including Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, SID, and IranDoc, to obtain relevant data. Our results showed that Al-Razi directly mentioned the toxicity of ten toxic plants in the animals. It is suggested that Al-Razi has contributed to the knowledge of veterinary medicine and the subspecialty of veterinary toxicology in particular. Future studies recommended to vet other historical medical sources, including traditional medicine textbooks, to find relevant information about veterinary medicine and veterinary toxicology.
