Background In recent years, gene expression-based analysis has been used for disease biomarker discovery, providing ways for better diagnosis, leading to improvement of clinical treatment efficacy. This study aimed to explore the role of miR-16-5p and ANLN in breast cancer (BC). Methods Cohort datasets of BC were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) and the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and analyzed by bioinformatics tools. qRT-PCR and western blotting were applied to validate ANLN and its protein expression. A dual-luciferase reporter assay was used to prove the regulatory relationship of miR-16-5p and ANLN. Finally, MTT, wound healing, Transwell invasion and flow cytometry analyses of the cell cycle and apoptosis were performed to assess cell proliferation, migration, invasion, cell cycle and apoptosis, respectively. Results A total of 195 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 50 overlapping microRNAs (miRNAs) were identified. Among these DEGs and miRNAs, ANLN, associated with poor overall survival in BC, overlapped in the GSE29431, GSE42568, TCGA and GEPIA2 databases. Moreover, ANLN was highly expressed, while miR-16-5p was lower in BC cells than in breast epithelial cells. Then, we confirmed that ANLN was directly targeted by miR-16-5p in BC cells. Over-expression of miR-16-5p and knock-down of ANLN remarkably inhibited cell proliferation and migration as well as cell invasion, arrested the cells in G2/M phase and induced apoptosis in BC cells. Conclusions These findings suggest that miR-16-5p restrains proliferation, migration and invasion while affecting cell cycle and promotes apoptosis by regulating ANLN, thereby providing novel candidate biomarkers for the diagnosis and treatment of BC.

Background: Cough is the most bothersome symptom, while more than two-thirds of children with common cold have to endure it for weeks. Susu xiao`er zhike granules (Susu) which used to be a clinical experienced herb formula for treating cough caused by common cold, is reproduced into a patent medicine for meeting market demands as a new drug. This protocol is designed with the aim of exploring the efficacy of Susu on shortening duration and reducing severity of cough, and observe the safety used in children. Methods/design: This is a protocol for a randomized, double-blind, dose exploration, multicenter clinical trial. A total of 240 children aged 6-14 years old (Discussion: The study is a phase II clinical trial that will evaluate the efficacy of a Chinese patent medicine in the treatment of cough in children.Trial registration: Chinese clinical trial registry, ChiCTR1900028377. Our vision systems utilize attention to process dynamic visual information everyday. Multiple object tracking (MOT) is widely used for studying sustained attention in dynamic environments. Previous research reported inter-target grouping based on feature similarity (e.g., targets sharing the same color, size, or shape) can facilitate tracking. A recent study also found that symmetric relation among targets in MOT tasks can automatically improve tracking performance, and a greater grouping effect based on symmetry and feature was observed. However, grouping based on multiple feature cues didn't produce a greater grouping effect than grouping based on one feature cue. Why were groupings based on symmetry and feature additive, but two feature-based groupings were not? How stimulus-driven inter-target groupings based on color or symmetry improve the goal-directed target tracking process remains unknown. We hypothesized that symmetry-based and feature-based groupings would involve different cortical and subcortical areas, and color-based and color-shape-based groupings would be manifested in significant activity in the same regions. This study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to identify cortical and subcortical areas involved in feature-based and symmetry-based groupings respectively during tracking. The results of our experiment showed that lateral occipital (LO) cortex is involved in symmetry-based grouping during tracking. Bilateral putamen, temporal parietal junction (TPJ), and frontal eye field (FEF) are involved in the feature-based grouping. Our findings likely indicate that stimulus-driven inter-target symmetry-based grouping and feature-based grouping improve goal-directed target tracking in different ways.

Background/Aims: Serine/threonine kinase 35 (STK35) may be associated with Parkinson disease and human colorectal cancer, but there have been no reports on the expression levels or roles of STK35 in osteosarcoma. Methods: STK35 mRNA expression was determined in osteosarcoma and bone cyst tissues by real-time PCR. Cell proliferation and apoptosis were assessed by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay and flow cytometry analysis, respectively. Results: STK35 was up-regulated in osteosarcoma tissues as indicated by analyzing publicly available expression data (GEO dataset E-MEXP-3628) and real-time PCR analysis on our own cohort. We subsequently investigated the effects of STK35 knockdown on two osteosarcoma cell lines, MG63 and U2OS. STK35 knockdown inhibited the growth of osteosarcoma cells in vitro and in xenograft tumors. Meanwhile, STK35 knockdown enhanced apoptosis. Expression of the active forms and the activity of two major executioner caspases, caspase 3 and caspase 7, were also increased in osteosarcoma cells with STK35 silenced. Additionally, Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) identified that the JAK/STAT signaling pathway was positively correlated with STK35 expression. The mRNA expression of STK35 was repressed by STAT3 small interfering RNA (siRNA), but not by siRNA of STAT4, STAT5A or STAT6. A luciferase reporter assay further demonstrated that STAT3 transcriptionally regulated STK35 expression. A chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assay confirmed the direct recruitment of STAT3 to the STK35 promoter. The promotion effects of STAT3 knockdown on cell apoptosis were partially abolished by STK35 overexpression. Furthermore, STK35 mRNA expression was positively correlated with STAT3 mRNA expression in osteosarcoma tissues by Pearson correlation analysis. Conclusions: These results collectively reveal that STAT3 regulates the transcription of STK35 in osteosarcoma. STK35 may exert an oncogenic role in osteosarcoma.

Here, we show that the cellular DNA replication protein and ATR substrate SMARCAL1 is recruited to viral replication centers early during adenovirus infection and is then targeted in an E1B-55K/E4orf6- and cullin RING ligase-dependent manner for proteasomal degradation. In this regard, we have determined that SMARCAL1 is phosphorylated at S123, S129, and S173 early during infection in an ATR- and CDK-dependent manner, and that pharmacological inhibition of ATR and CDK activities attenuates SMARCAL1 degradation. SMARCAL1 recruitment to viral replication centers was shown to be largely dependent upon SMARCAL1 association with the RPA complex, while Ad-induced SMARCAL1 phosphorylation also contributed to SMARCAL1 recruitment to viral replication centers, albeit to a limited extent. SMARCAL1 was found associated with E1B-55K in adenovirus E1-transformed cells. Consistent with its ability to target SMARCAL1, we determined that E1B-55K modulates cellular DNA replication. As such, E1B-55K expression initially enhances cellular DNA replication fork speed but ultimately leads to increased replication fork stalling and the attenuation of cellular DNA replication. Therefore, we propose that adenovirus targets SMARCAL1 for degradation during infection to inhibit cellular DNA replication and promote viral replication. IMPORTANCE Viruses have evolved to inhibit cellular DNA damage response pathways that possess antiviral activities and utilize DNA damage response pathways that possess proviral activities. Adenovirus has evolved, primarily, to inhibit DNA damage response pathways by engaging with the ubiquitin-proteasome system and promoting the degradation of key cellular proteins. Adenovirus differentially regulates ATR DNA damage response signaling pathways during infection. The cellular adenovirus E1B-55K binding protein E1B-AP5 participates in ATR signaling pathways activated during infection, while adenovirus 12 E4orf6 negates Chk1 activation by promoting the proteasome-dependent degradation of the ATR activator TOPBP1. The studies detailed here indicate that adenovirus utilizes ATR kinase and CDKs during infection to promote the degradation of SMARCAL1 to attenuate normal cellular DNA replication. These studies further our understanding of the relationship between adenovirus and DNA damage and cell cycle signaling pathways during infection and establish new roles for E1B-55K in the modulation of cellular DNA replication.

Stem cell-based repair strategies for spinal cord injury (SCI) are a highly studied area of research. Multiple gene-modified stem cells have been transplanted into SCI models, in the hope of generating more neurons to repair a damaged nervous system. However, the results are not always successful, as the grafted cells may be unable to survive in the injured spinal cord. E-cadherin, a transmembrane adhesion protein, has been identified as an epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition marker and is vital for morphological structure maintenance and the functional integrity of epithelial cells. At present, few studies have examined the association between E-cadherin and neural stem cells (NSCs). The present study investigated the expression of E-cadherin in subcultured NSCs and differentiated NSCs. Furthermore, the effect of E-cadherin on NSC viability, migration, differentiation and neurosphere formation was assessed. An in vivo study was used to assess the long-term survival of grafted NSCs. Additionally, the protective effect of E-cadherin on SCI was assessed by analyzing tissue repair, Basso Mouse Scale scores and the expression of inflammatory cytokines. The results of the present study suggested that E-cadherin was able to promote NSC viability and neurosphere formation; however, it had no significant effect on NSC differentiation. To conclude, grafted NSCs with highly expressed E-cadherin facilitated motor function recovery following SCI by reducing the release of inflammatory cytokines.

However, little is known about whether and how the brain structures of adolescent AIDS orphans differ from those of healthy adolescents. Here, we used magnetic resonance imaging to compare adolescent AIDS orphans reared in institutions (N = 20) with a sex- and age-matched group of healthy adolescents reared in families (N = 20) in China using a voxel-based morphometry analysis. First, we found that both total gray- and white-matter volumes did not differ between groups. Second, after correcting for age, sex, and total gray-matter volume, the AIDS orphan group demonstrated smaller hippocampal volumes, larger anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) volumes, and no differences in the amygdala. Third, a whole-brain analysis identified higher gray-matter volume of the ACC in the AIDS orphan group than in the control group. The preliminary findings of this study highlight the need for future research to confirm the sensitivity of the hippocampus and ACC to early adversity. 12 p.

Psychological resilience refers to the ability to thrive in the face of risk and adversity, which is crucial for individuals' mental and physical health. However, its precise neural correlates are still largely unknown. Here we used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to identify the brain regions underlying this construct by correlating individuals' psychological resilience scores with the regional homogeneity (ReHo) and then examined how these resilience-related regions predicted life satisfaction in a sample of healthy young adults. We found that the ReHo in the bilateral insula, right dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) and right rostral ACC (rACC) negatively predicted individual differences in psychological resilience, revealing the critical role of the salience network (SN) in psychological resilience. Crucially, the ReHo in the dACC within the SN mediated the effects of psychological resilience on life satisfaction. In summary, these findings suggest that spontaneous activity of the human brain reflect the efficiency of psychological resilience and highlight the dACC within the SN as a neural substrate linking psychological resilience and life satisfaction.

Background/Aims: microRNAs are of vital importance in neural development. As a brain-specific miRNA, miR-132 has been well studied in mature neurons. However, its role in neural stem cells (NSCs) remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the role of miR-132 in regulating NSCs proliferation, differentiation and neuronal maturation. Methods: NSCs were obtained from fetal mice spinal cord. Proliferation, cell cycle, cell apoptosis, cell motility were measured through CCK-8, BrdU, AnnexinV-FITC/PI and migration assay respectively. The expression of synaptic proteins and ERK1/2 pathway were detected by western blot. The inactivation of Notch pathway was checked using qPCR. The neurite outgrowth was recorded using Image J software and Neuron J software. Dendritic length was further analyzed through sholl analysis. Fate determination of NSCs, developmental synapse formation was assessed by immunostaining. Results: miR-132 negatively regulated NSCs proliferation by affecting the cell cycle and promoting apoptosis. Inactivated Notch-Hes1pathway was observed in miR-132 overexpression cells. miR-132 was significantly increased in differentiating NSCs following activation of ERK1/2 pathway. miR-132 could impair neuronal differentiation but promote glial cell differentiation by regulating Mecp2 expression. miR-132 was implicated in neurite outgrowth but slightly inhibited postsynaptic PSD-95 expression. The differentiated neurons exhibited normal electrophysiological characteristics, and already interacted with other neurons to form synaptic-like structures. Conclusion: miR-132 was demonstrated as a negative regulator for NSCs self-renewal, neuronal differentiation but promoted glial cell differentiation and neurite outgrowth.

Subjective well-being is assumed to be distributed in the hedonic hotspots of subcortical and cortical structures. However, the precise neural correlates underlying this construct, especially how it is maintained during the resting state, are still largely unknown. Here, we explored the neural basis of subjective well-being by correlating the regional fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (fALFF) with the self-reported subjective well-being of healthy individuals. Behaviorally, we demonstrated that subjective well-being contained two related but distinct components: cognitive and affective well-being. Neurally, we showed that the fALFF in the bilateral posterior superior temporal gyrus (pSTG), right posterior mid-cingulate cortex (pMCC), right thalamus, left postcentral gyrus (PCG), right lingual gyrus, and left planum temporale (PT) positively predicted cognitive well-being, whereas the fALFF in the bilateral superior frontal gyrus (SFG), right orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), and left inferior temporal gyrus (ITG) negatively predicted cognitive well-being. In contrast, only the fALFF in the right amygdala reliably predicted affective well-being. Furthermore, emotional intelligence partially mediated the effects of the right pSTG and thalamus on cognitive well-being, as well as the effect of the right amygdala on affective well-being. In summary, we provide the first evidence that spontaneous brain activity in multiple regions associated with sensation, social perception, cognition, and emotion contributes to cognitive well-being, whereas the spontaneous brain activity in only one emotion-related region contributes to affective well-being, suggesting that the spontaneous activity of the human brain reflect the efficiency of subjective well-being.

Greater tuberosity fractures (GTFs) account for 17 to 21% of proximal humerus fractures, most of these fractures are treated conservatively, but treatment for displaced fractures is still controversial. The aim of this study is to compare intra-operative clinical conditions and post-operative outcomes when displaced GTFs are treated with either proximal humeral internal locking system (PHILOS) or mini locking plate with trans-osseous sutures. This is a retrospective study conducted in Shanghai Tenth People’s Hospital. A total of 60 patients (22 males and 38 females) with displaced humeral GTF between May 2013 and March 2017 were included, of whom 43 underwent PHILOS implant treatment and 17 underwent titanium mini plate implant with trans-osseous suture treatment. Intra-operative (incision size, intra-operative blood loss, operative duration) and postoperative (Constant-Murley score (CMS) and implant cost) variables were recorded for the comparison. Although much attention has been directed towards life satisfaction that refers to an individual's general cognitive evaluations of his or her life as a whole, little is known about the neural basis underlying global life satisfaction. In this study, we used voxel-based morphometry to investigate the structural neural correlates of life satisfaction in a large sample of young healthy adults (n = 299). We showed that individuals' life satisfaction was positively correlated with the regional gray matter volume (rGMV) in the right parahippocampal gyrus (PHG), and negatively correlated with the rGMV in the left precuneus and left ventromedial prefrontal cortex. This pattern of results remained significant even after controlling for the effect of general positive and negative affect, suggesting a unique structural correlates of life satisfaction. Furthermore, we found that self-esteem partially mediated the association between the PHG volume and life satisfaction as well as that between the precuneus volume and global life satisfaction. Taken together, we provide the first evidence for the structural neural basis of life satisfaction, and highlight that self-esteem might play a crucial role in cultivating an individual's life satisfaction.

Eudaimonic well-being (EWB) is the fulfillment of human potential and a meaningful life. Previous studies have shown that personality traits, especially extraversion, neuroticism, and conscientiousness, significantly contribute to EWB. However, the neurobiological pathways linking personality and EWB are not understood. Here, we used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to investigate this issue. Specifically, we correlated individuals' EWB scores with the regional fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) of the brain, and then examined how personality traits predicted EWB-related spontaneous brain activity. We found that EWB was positively correlated with the fALFF in the right posterior superior temporal gyrus (pSTG) and thalamus, and negatively correlated with the strength of the thalamic-insular connectivity. More importantly, we found that personality traits influenced EWB in different ways. At the regional level, the fALFF in the pSTG and thalamus mediated the effects of neuroticism and extraversion on EWB, whereas the thalamus mediated the effect of conscientiousness on EWB. At the functional connectivity level, the thalamic-insular connectivity only mediated the effect of neuroticism on EWB. Taken together, our study provides the first evidence that EWB is associated with personality traits through different neural substrates.

Religious symbols are used throughout the world to evoke specific meaning in adherents. However, it is unclear if the impact of symbols is based upon their meaning or the inherent effect of the visual symbols on the brain. There has never been a study that has assessed the impact of religious symbols, of both positive and negative emotional content, on the brain. In addition, it would also be important to correlate the neurophysiological effect of various religious symbols to specific measures of a person’s perspective on religion. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging to study 20 healthy subjects from different religious backgrounds, we found that neural activation in the primary visual cortex was significantly suppressed in response to religious negative symbols compared with neutral and nonreligious negative symbols. No such deactivation was observed for religious positive symbols. Subjects’ scores on the Quest scale, an index of religious and spiritual orientation and belief, correlated significantly with activity in the primary visual cortex for negative symbols, but not for positive symbols. Background. Common cold is one of the most frequently occurring illnesses in primary healthcare services and represents considerable disease burden. Common cold of Qi-deficiency syndrome (CCQDS) is an important but less addressed traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) pattern. We designed a protocol to explore the efficacy, safety, and optimal dose of Shen Guo Lao Nian Granule (SGLNG) for treating CCQDS. Methods/Design. This is a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase II clinical trial. A total of 240 eligible patients will be recruited from five centers. Patients are randomly assigned to high-dose group, middle-dose group, low-dose group, or control group in a 1 : 1 : 1 : 1 ratio. All drugs are required to be taken 3 times daily for 5 days with a 5-day follow-up period. Primary outcomes are duration of all symptoms, total score reduction on Jackson’s scale, and TCM symptoms scale. Secondary outcomes include every single TCM symptom duration and score reduction, TCM main symptoms disappearance rate, curative effects, and comparison between Jackson’s scale and TCM symptom scale. Ethics and Trial Registration. This study protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of Clinical Trials and Biomedicine of West China Hospital of Sichuan University (number IRB-2014-12) and registered with the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR-IPR-15006349).

Spatial navigation is a crucial ability for living. Previous studies have shown that males are better at navigation than females, but little is known about the neural basis underlying the sex differences. In this study, we investigated whether cortical scene processing in three well-established scene-selective regions was sexually different, by examining sex differences in scene selectivity and its behavioral relevance to navigation. To do this, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to scan the parahippocampal place area (PPA), retrosplenial complex (RSC), and occipital place area (OPA) in a large cohort of healthy young adults viewing navigationally relevant scenes (N = 202), and correlated their neural selectivity to scenes with their self-reported navigational ability. Behaviorally, we replicated the previous finding that males were better at navigation than females. Neurally, we found that the scene selectivity in the bilateral PPA, not in the RSC or OPA, was significantly higher in males than females. Such differences could not be explained by confounding factors including brain size and fMRI data quality. Importantly, males, not females, with stronger scene selectivity in the left PPA possessed better navigational ability. This brain-behavior association could not be accounted for by non-navigational abilities (i.e., intelligence and mental rotation ability). Overall, our study provides novel empirical evidence demonstrating sex differences in the brain activity, inviting further studies on sex differences in the neural network for spatial navigation.

When different objects switch identities in the multiple identity tracking (MIT) task, viewers need to rebind objects’ identity and location, which requires attention. This rebinding helps people identify the regions targets are in (where they need to focus their attention) and inhibit unimportant regions (where distractors are). This study investigated the processing of attentional tracking after identity switching in an adapted MIT task. This experiment used three identity-switching conditions: a target-switching condition (where the target objects switched identities), a distractor-switching condition (where the distractor objects switched identities), and a no-switching condition. Compared to the distractor-switching condition, the target-switching condition elicited greater activation in the frontal eye fields (FEF), intraparietal sulcus (IPS), and visual cortex. Compared to the no-switching condition, the target-switching condition elicited greater activation in the FEF, inferior frontal gyrus (pars orbitalis) (IFG-Orb), IPS, visual cortex, middle temporal lobule, and anterior cingulate cortex. Finally, the distractor-switching condition showed greater activation in the IFG-Orb compared to the no-switching condition. These results suggest that, in the target-switching condition, the FEF and IPS (the dorsal attention network) might be involved in goal-driven attention to targets during attentional tracking. In addition, in the distractor-switching condition, the activation of the IFG-Orb may indicate salient change that pulls attention away automatically.

Although insufficient sleep is a well-recognized risk factor for overeating and weight gain, the neural mechanisms underlying increased caloric (particularly fat) intake after sleep deprivation remain unclear. Here we used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and examined brain connectivity changes associated with macronutrient intake after one night of total sleep deprivation (TSD). Compared to the day following baseline sleep, healthy adults consumed a greater percentage of calories from fat and a lower percentage of calories from carbohydrates during the day following TSD. Subjects also exhibited increased brain connectivity in the salience network from the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) to bilateral putamen and bilateral anterior insula (aINS) after TSD. Moreover, dACC-putamen and dACC-aINS connectivity correlated with increased fat and decreased carbohydrate intake during the day following TSD, but not during the day following baseline sleep. These findings provide a potential neural mechanism by which sleep loss leads to increased fat intake.

Social well-being reflects the appraisal of one's circumstance and functioning in society, which is crucial for individuals' mental and physical health. However, little is known about the neural processes associated with social well-being. In this study, we used voxel-based morphometry (VBM) to identify the brain regions underlying individual differences in social well-being, as measured by the Social Well-being Scale (SWBS), in a large sample of young healthy adults. We found that social well-being was negatively correlated with gray matter volume in left mid-dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (mid-DLPFC) that is implicated in executive functioning, emotional regulation and social reasoning. The results remained significant even after controlling for the effect of socioeconomic status. Furthermore, although basic personality factors such as neuroticism, extraversion, and conscientiousness (as measured by the NEO Personality Inventory) all contributed to social well-being, only extraversion acted as a mediational mechanism underlying the association between the left mid-DLPFC volume and social well-being. Together, our findings provide the first evidence for the structural basis of individual differences in social well-being, and suggest that the personality trait of extraversion might play an important role in the acquisition and process of social well-being.

The opinion of mind–body interaction has been increasingly acknowledged in recent years, as exemplified by accumulating evidence indicating that physical health (body) is associated with emotion and emotion regulation (mind). Yet, the neural basis linking emotion regulation with physical health remains largely uninvestigated. Here we used magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the neural basis of this pathway in a large population of healthy young adults. With a systematic study revealing the association of self-reported physical health and emotion traits of personality and general affective experiences, we further demonstrated that, for better physical health, individuals needed to regulate their emotion more effectively. Importantly, individuals who had larger gray matter (GM) volume in the amygdala reported not only a higher ability of emotion regulation but also better physical health. Further, GM volume in the amygdala mediated the correlation between emotion regulation ability and physical health. Our findings suggest that the amygdala plays a critical role in the neural circuit through which emotion regulation may influence physical health. Therefore, our study takes the first step toward exploring the neuroanatomical basis for body–mind interaction and may inform interventions aimed at promoting physical health by augmenting skills of emotion regulation.

Objective The objective of this study was to compare the interictal cortical response to a visual stimulus between migraine with aura (MWA), migraine without aura (MwoA), and control subjects. Methods In a prospective case-control study, blood oxygen level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (BOLD fMRI) was used to assess the response to a visual stimulus and arterial spin labeled perfusion MR to determine resting cerebral blood flow. A standardized questionnaire was used to assess interictal visual discomfort. Results Seventy-five subjects (25 MWA, 25 MwoA, and 25 controls) were studied. BOLD fMRI response to visual stimulation within primary visual cortex was greater in MWA (3.09 ± 0.15%) compared to MwoA (2.36 ± 0.13%, p = 0.0008) and control subjects (2.47 ± 0.11%, p = 0.002); responses were also greater in the lateral geniculate nuclei in MWA. No difference was found between MwoA and control groups. Whole brain analysis showed that increased activation in MWA was confined to the occipital pole. Regional resting cerebral blood flow did not differ between groups. MWA and MwoA subjects had significantly greater levels of interictal visual discomfort compared to controls ( p = 0.008 and p = 0.005, respectively), but this did not correlate with BOLD response. Conclusions Despite similar interictal symptoms of visual discomfort, only MWA subjects have cortical hyperresponsiveness to visual stimulus, suggesting a direct connection between cortical hyperresponsiveness and aura itself.

Previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have identified several regions in the ventral visual pathway that are specialized for processing faces, words and general objects. However, little is known about the origin of the functional selectivity of these regions. Here, we reported a pediatric patient who suffered a left occipitoparietal lesion in the first year after birth from a subdural hematoma. After the hematoma was removed at the age of six, the hemianopia in the right visual field was alleviated, and no obvious deficits in low-level vision were observed in the patient at the age of twelve. In line with the behavioral observations, meridian mappings with fMRI showed that the early visual cortex of the left hemisphere was significantly activated, which was similar to that of the intact right hemisphere. However, the left ventral temporal cortex failed to show selective responses for faces, words and objects, which were in contrast to the normal selective responses for these objects in the right counterpart. Therefore, it is likely that the development of object selectivity in the ventral temporal cortex depends on visual inputs from the early visual cortex at an early age.

Dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) has been found to function abnormally in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) patients in several former functional MRI (fMRI) studies. Resting-state low-frequency fluctuations (LFFs) of blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) fMRI signals have been proved to be quite informative. This study used resting-state LFFs to investigate the resting-state functional connectivity pattern differences of dACC in adolescents with and without ADHD. As compared to the controls, the ADHD patients exhibited more significant resting-state functional connectivities with the dACC in bilateral dACC, bilateral thalamus, bilateral cerebellum, bilateral insula and bilateral brainstem (pons). No brain region in the controls was found to exhibit more significant resting-state functional connectivity with the dACC. We suggest these abnormally more significant functional connectivities in the ADHD patients may indicate the abnormality of autonomic control functions in them.
