Background: The Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a type of beta herpesvirus widespread in all human populations. It is estimated that up to 80-100% of adults worldwide and most infections are harmless and can cause severe health complications in infants, like hearing loss and developmental issues. Still, immunocompromised individuals can experience serious complications from the virus. Unfortunately, there is limited information on the prevalence of this virus in our country, and no studies have been reported on the rate of CMV transmission yet. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the levels of IgM antibodies against Cytomegalovirus (CMV) in East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, and Seraikela Kharsawan using an ELISA test. Methods: An indirect ELISA test was performed to detect anti-CMV IgM and the period of study was from January’2021 to June’2023. Results: The examination tested 55 people for the TORCH profile of CMV parameters from regions of East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, and Seraikela Kharsawan. Here, 17 people (30.09%) were IgM positive by ELISA. Conclusions: The serological data confirms that CMV is not being monitored and recognized in the general population, which limits our study between CMV infection, disease, and clinically diagnosed outcomes. This understanding is crucial for the healthcare and policy sectors. Thus, we recommend implementing a surveillance and mindfulness program for at least one-fourth of the population in Jharkhand and continuing to explore and develop effective vaccines to control CMV infections.

Objective: To determine the seroprevalence of Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in females of childbearing age. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Virology Department, tertiary care hospital, Rawalpindi, from August 2022 to December 2022. Materials and Methods: A total of 200 females, aged 15-49 years, were included in the study. Data of the participants regarding age, socioeconomic status, marital status, and previous history of VZV infection was collected by a predesigned questionnaire. Blood samples were tested for the detection of VZV IgG by Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) of Ratio Diagnostic, Germany. SPSS version 25 was used to analyze the data. Results: Out of total 200 samples, 163 (81.5%) were positive for VZV IgG and 37 (18.5%) were negative. The positivity of VZV IgG was highest in age group 2 (20-29 years) with 87 (43.5%) positive cases, followed by 54 (27%) in age group 3 (30-39 years) and 11 (5.5%) in both age group 1 (< 20 years) and age group 4 (40-49 years). Out of 200 participants, 158 (79.0%) were married and 42 (21.0%) were unmarried. Among total, 107 (53.5%) had history of previous VZV infection while 93 (46.5%) had no significant history. Conclusions: This study showed significant exposure of VZV in females of childbearing age and subsequent development of immunity. However, a substantial proportion of females were susceptible to VZV infection. This susceptibility in females could potentially pose a future risk of infection during pregnancy, resulting in severe complications and congenital abnormalities.

We identified a cluster of mpox exposures among key populations in Kenya through retrospective serologic screening. We identified strong seropositivity among sex workers and gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. These findings demonstrate the need for increased mpox surveillance among mpox-endemic and mpox-endemic–adjacent regions in Africa.

This study was conducted using data from the SCAALA (Social Change Asthma and Allergy in Latin America) cohort in Brazil from 2005 to 2013. We examined the seroprevalence and risk factors of toxocariasis, a parasitic infection leading to conditions such as visceral larva migrans, utilizing an indirect ELISA with T. canis antigens, alongside with data from questionnaires, eosinophil counts, sIgE to aeroallergens, IL-10 levels, and Skin Prick Test results; the research provided insights into the disease’s dynamics. The prevalence of anti-Toxocara spp. IgG increased from 48% to 53% over the studied period, with a 25% increase in new cases in 2013. The significant risk factors included age and pet exposure, while higher maternal education and living on paved streets were found to offer protection. The study uncovered a complex interaction between Toxocara spp. infection and the immune system, indicating that the infection could both trigger inflammation and modulate skin reactions. Based on these findings, the study proposed a roadmap for controlling toxocariasis, which includes strategies such as enhancing public education about the disease and preventive measures, improving environmental sanitation, strengthening veterinary control measures like pet deworming, increasing access to healthcare and screening, and implementing community-based interventions to address the identified risk factors. These measures aim to reduce the prevalence of toxocariasis and its impact on public health by addressing environmental and socioeconomic risk factors, providing a pathway to significantly reduce the burden of this parasitic infection.

Summary Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is the organism responsible for one of the most prevalent chronic infectious diseases and is widespread throughout the world. Objectives: The sero-prevalence of HBV infection among children presenting to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Nigeria was investigated with a view to assessing the scope of HBV infection among children in this part of the country and correlating serological findings to epidemiological data. Methods: This was a hospital-based cross-sectional study of 276 children attending the paediatric clinics of UMTH from July 2007 to December 2007. The subjects were recruited consecutively, from the population of patients aged four months to 15 years. A protocol detailing epidemiological data, history of HBV vaccination and physical examination was completed for each of the patients. All the study samples were tested for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) by the ELISA method, making use of Wellcozyme HBsAg commercial kits (Wellcome Diagnostics, Dartford, England). . Results: The overall prevalence of HBsAg among children tested was 9.4 percent. The highest frequency of HBsAg was observed in children two years and below (38 percent). HBs antigenaemia was higher among males than females, although the difference was not statistically significant (x2 = 0.861. df =1 p = 0.354). No significant difference was observed between HBsAg status and socio-economic class (SEC) of the study population (X? = 6.930. df = 4 p=0.140). There was however, a significant association between lack of immunisation and HBs antigenaemia (Fisher's exact test p < 0.000, RR = 0.463; 0.370-0.580). Conclusion: The prevalence of HBs antigenaemia among children in Maiduguri was high. HBV predominantly infects children in their infancy and early childhood without a significant gender disparity. Lack of HBV vaccination was significantly associated with HBsAg positivity.

Background and Aim:Hepatitis E virus (HEV) poses a global public health concern. HEV has a single serotype and 8 genotypes. There is inadequate knowledge about risk factors and zoonotic transmission pathways of hepatitis E virus in Mongolia, although the prevalence of HEV is, on average, 12% among the Mongolian population. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and risk factors of HEV G8 infection in Bayankhongor province, Mongolia. Materials and Methods: Human serum samples (309) were collected in Bogd, Bayangovi, and Bayanlig districts of Bayankhongor province, Mongolia, with a control group consisting of non-camel herders. An in-house indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit was used to detect anti-HEV IgG. The interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to gather the data. The assessment factors included age, sex, and occupation for the respondents. Univariate analyses were conducted using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 26. The same population was tested for hepatitis B and C viruses (HBVs and HCVs) using rapid tests. Results: Of 309 samples, 41 (13.3%) tested positive for anti-HEV immunoglobulin G antibodies, 23 (7.4%) for HBV and 11 (3.6%) for HCV. HEV seropositivity was linked with water supply, khoormog consumption, and co-infection with HBV and HCV. Conclusion: HEV prevalence among Bayankhongor residents underscores potential transmission routes related to water supply and khoormog consumption, emphasizing the need for sequencing from human positive sera of HEV and preventive measures. We did not conduct the genotyping of positive human samples.

Introduction: Hepatitis B virus infection is a major public health problem worldwide. It is more infectious and more in Nigeria than the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). It is a major risk factor for the development of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular cancer in hyperendemic areas. This study was carried out between 8th January and 7th March, 2012, to assess the prevalence of Hepatitis B virus infection among apparently healthy primary school pupils in Batagarawa Local Government, Katsina state. Methods: Hepatitis B surface antigen was tested for in 240 apparently healthy primary school pupils in Batagarawa Local Government, Katsina state in North- Western Nigeria using commercial recombinant enzyme-based HBsAg test strip. Results: Of the 240 samples screened, 56 (23.3%) were seropositive. HBsAg seroprevalence was higher among children aged 7 – 9 years (7.9%), and among male (15.8%) than female (7.8%) subjects. Of the predisposing factors for HBV infection studied, traditional circumcision among the male subjects recorded the highest prevalence of 30%. Conclusion: The high prevalence of HBV infection amongst the subjects studied strongly suggests that urgent preventive measures, particularly health education of the general public on HBV infection and provision of universal HBV vaccination should be given urgent priority.

Abstract Pakistan bears a substantial burden of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, with the second-highest prevalence globally. This community-based cross-sectional study, conducted from January to December 2022 in Punjab, Pakistan, investigates the seroprevalence of HCV among the men who have sex with men (MSM) population. The study identifies demographic and behavioral risk factors associated with HCV infection within this population group. Among the 501 participants, the study found an HCV seroprevalence of 14.86%. The association between demographic characteristics and seroprevalence is assessed by calculating the percentage of positive cases, revealing notable associations with age, education level, and self-identified sexual orientation. Furthermore, the study identified several behavioral risk factors positively associated with HCV seroprevalence, including sharing personal items such as razors and toothbrushes, histories of surgery, blood transfusion, dental procedures, intravenous drug use, and therapeutic injection histories. These risk factors were identified through structured interviews, and the prevalence of HCV seropositivity among the exposed groups was calculated accordingly. Interestingly, a lower HCV positivity rate was observed among self-reported HIV-positive individuals, contradicting previous research. The findings underscore the need for comprehensive, targeted prevention strategies such as risk factor awareness campaigns and educational programs tailored for the MSM population in Pakistan. Further research is warranted to validate these findings and better understand the complex interplay of factors contributing to HCV seroprevalence in this high-risk population.

Background and objectives: Children comprised a significant part of the population during the second and third waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. The objectives of this study were to estimate the seroprevalence of COVID-19 IgG antibody among the children aged 6 to 14 years and to determine, if any, the factors associated with seropositivity. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in a selected block of West Bengal, India over a period of 1 year (April 2022-March 2023) among children. Thirty villages in the block were selected by cluster sampling technique. COVID-19 IgM/IgG Rapid Antibody Test Kit (ICMR approved) was used for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies. Data were analyzed by appropriate statistical tests. Results: Total 600 children were enrolled in the study.SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody was positive in 57.2% children. The seropositivity rate (91.8%) was significantly (p0.05). Conclusion: SARS-COV-2 IgG antibody was positive in a high proportion of children residing in rural areas indicating asymptomatic coronavirus infections among rural population. Abstract Adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) are promising gene therapy vectors, but challenges arise when treating patients with preexisting neutralizing antibodies. Worldwide seroprevalence studies provide snapshots of existing immunity in diverse populations. Owing to the uniqueness of the Basque socio-geographical landscape, we investigated the seroprevalence of eight AAV serotypes in residents of the Basque Country. We found the highest seroprevalence of AAV3, and the lowest seroprevalence of AAV9. Additionally, less than 50% of the Basque population has neutralizing antibodies against AAV4, AAV6, and AAV9. Our findings provide insight into AAV infections in the Basque region, public health, and the development of AAV-based therapeutics.

Abstract Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) is an emerging tick-borne virus with a mortality rate of up to 30%. First identified in China in 2009, it was later reported in other Asian countries, including Thailand in 2020. SFTSV has been detected in several tick species, including Rhipicephalus sanguineus, known for infesting dogs. We conducted a seroprevalence study of SFTSV in Bangkok and Nong Khai, Thailand, by analyzing 1162 human samples collected between 2019 and 2023. The testing method relied on IgG detection using ELISA and confirmed though a virus seroneutralization test. The results indicated that out of the participants, 12 (1.1%) tested positive for anti-SFTSV IgG antibodies; however, none exhibited positive results in the seroneutralization assay. Additionally, molecular detection of SFTSV, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), Coxiella spp., Bartonella spp., and Rickettsia spp. was performed on 433 Rh. sanguineus ticks collected from 49 dogs in 2023 in Chachoengsao Province, Thailand. No evidence of these pathogens was found in ticks. These findings highlight the importance of exploring viral cross-reactivity. Furthermore, it is important to conduct additional studies to isolate SFTSV from animals and ticks in order to identify the potential transmission routes contributing to human and animal infections in Thailand.

Abstract Coronaviruses have been confirmed to infect a variety of species, but only one case of associated winter dysentery of European bison has been described. The study aimed to analyze the prevalence, and define the impact on the species conservation, the source of coronavirus infection, and the role of the European bison in the transmission of the pathogen in Poland. Molecular and serological screening was performed on 409 European bison from 6 free-ranging and 14 captive herds over the period of 6 years (2017–2023). Presence of coronavirus was confirmed in one nasal swab by pancoronavirus RT-PCR and in 3 nasal swab samples by bovine coronavirus (BCoV) specific real time RT-PCR. The detected virus showed high (> 98%) homology in both RdRp and Spike genes to BCoV strains characterised recently in Polish cattle and strains isolated from wild cervids in Italy. Antibodies specific to BCoV were found in 6.4% of tested samples, all originating from free-ranging animals. Seroprevalence was higher in adult animals over 5 years of age (p = 0.0015) and in females (p = 0.09). Our results suggest that European bison play only a limited role as reservoirs of bovine-like coronaviruses. Although the most probable source of infections in the European bison population in Poland is cattle, other wild ruminants could also be involved. In addition, the zoonotic potential of bovine coronaviruses is quite low.

Abstract Humoral immunity in COVID-19 includes antibodies (Abs) targeting spike (S) and nucleocapsid (N) SARS-CoV-2 proteins. Antibody levels are known to correlate with disease severity, but titers are poorly reported in mild or asymptomatic cases. Here, we analyzed the titers of IgA and IgG against SARS-CoV-2 proteins in samples from 200 unvaccinated Hospital Workers (HWs) with mild COVID-19 at two time points after infection. We analyzed the relationship between Ab titers and patient characteristics, clinical features, and evolution over time. Significant differences in IgG and IgA titers against N, S1 and S2 proteins were found when samples were segregated according to time T1 after infection, seroprevalence at T1, sex and age of HWs and symptoms at infection. We found that IgM + samples had higher titers of IgG against N antigen and IgA against S1 and S2 antigens than IgM − samples. There were significant correlations between anti-S1 and S2 Abs. Interestingly, IgM + patients with dyspnea had lower titers of IgG and IgA against N, S1 and S2 than those without dyspnea. Comparing T1 and T2, we found that IgA against N, S1 and S2 but only IgG against certain Ag decreased significantly. In conclusion, an association was established between Ab titers and the development of infection symptoms.

Introduction: COVID-19 is a disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 that has appeared as a global pandemic in recent times. Currently, the transmission rate has slowed down significantly, but the definite pathological reason behind this is still unknown. Therefore, the prevalence of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) antibody must be studied to establish the relation between the rate of transmission and antibody presence. Materials and Methods: A clinical assessment was performed to evaluate the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies among 299 healthy volunteers in the period of February to May 2021. Serum samples were analyzed using chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA) technology to detect the presence of IgG antibodies. Result: It was observed that 21% of the participants were seropositive, and 78% of the population was seronegative across the different genders. This confirmed that the generation of antibodies is independent of gender. Simultaneously, a t-test was performed that further suggested no statistical correlation between gender and seroprevalence. Moreover, a comprehensive analysis was performed to establish the relation between age and blood group with the seroprevalence. However, there was no statistical relationship found among these parameters. Conclusion: This study assisted in examining the underlying causes of high or low seroprevalence among healthy volunteers.

Introduction: The rapid spread and mutation rate of severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus (SARS-CoV2) demands continuous monitoring in terms of genomic and serosurvival. The current study is designed to track the seroprevalence of health care workers (HCWs) postvaccination, as they may be more susceptible to contracting the SARS-CoV-2 infection compared to the general population. Objective: The objective was to identify the seroprevalence rate for SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody (N, S1, S2) amongst HCWs of various levels of exposure working in a tertiary care teaching hospital in Puducherry. Materials and Methods: The present study followed a nonprobability consecutive sampling technique, which involved 216 study participants HCWs from the hospital. IgG antibody levels were measured using EUROIMMUNE Anti SARS-COV-2 ELISA KIT (IG g) ELISA at two points: firstly, 2 weeks after the second dose of vaccination, followed by 2 weeks after the booster dose. Results: Out of the total 216 participants enrolled in the survey, there were 140 males and 76 females, and the maximum number of candidates studied were in the 41–50 age group. Almost 46.7% of the HCWs who participated in the study were seropositive for SARS-CoV-2 in the case of those who were high-risk exposed, while only 30.4% were amongst those who were low-risk exposed. The proportion of study participants who became seropositive increased considerably after the booster dose (65.7%), from 38.0% when tested three months after infection. Conclusion: A significant increase in antibody titres amongst high-risk HCWs postboost vaccination demands continuous monitoring of soluble IgG levels for recommendations of vaccination schedules.

We evaluated Q fever prevalence in blood donors and assessed the epidemiologic features of the disease in Israel in 2021. We tested serum samples for Coxeilla burnetii phase I and II IgG using immunofluorescent assay, defining a result of >200 as seropositive. We compared geographic and demographic data. We included 1,473 participants; 188 (12.7%) were seropositive. The calculated sex- and age-adjusted national seroprevalence was 13.9% (95% CI 12.2%–15.7%). In a representative sample of female children and adolescents in Germany, Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence was 6.3% (95% CI 4.7%–8.0%). With each year of life, the chance of being seropositive increased by 1.2, indicating a strong force of infection. Social status and municipality size were found to be associated with seropositivity.

Dogs are known to be susceptible to influenza A viruses, although information on influenza D virus (IDV) is limited. We investigated the seroprevalence of IDV in 426 dogs in the Apulia region of Italy during 2016 and 2023. A total of 14 samples were positive for IDV antibodies, suggesting exposure to IDV in dogs.

Abstract Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious, endemic, and acute viral cattle ailment that causes major economic damage in Ethiopia. Although several serotypes of the FMD virus have been detected in Ethiopia, there is no documented information about the disease's current serostatus and serotypes circulating in the Wolaita zone. Thus, from March to December 2022, a cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate FMDV seroprevalence, molecular detection, and serotype identification in three Wolaita Zone sites. A multistage sample procedure was used to choose three peasant associations from each study region, namely Wolaita Sodo, Offa district, and Boloso sore district. A systematic random sampling technique was employed to pick 384 cattle from the population for the seroprevalence research, and 10 epithelial tissue samples were purposefully taken from outbreak individuals for molecular detection of FMDV. The sera were examined using 3ABC FMD NSP Competition ELISA to find antibodies against FMDV non-structural proteins, whereas epithelial tissue samples were analyzed for molecular detection using real-time RT-PCR, and sandwich ELISA was used to determine the circulating serotypes. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to evaluate the associated risk variables. The total seroprevalence of FMD in cattle was 46.88% (95% CI 41.86–51.88), with Wolaita Sodo Town having the highest seroprevalence (63.28%). Introduction: Echinococcus species are zoonotic parasites that cause hydatid disease, affecting humans and animals. The seroprevalence of hydatid disease reflects the level of exposure to this parasite and can be used as an indicator of the burden of the disease in a population. Aim: To determine the seroprevalence of hydatid disease. Materials and Methods: The study was a retrospective observational study conducted at JIPMER hospital, a tertiary care centre located in Puducherry, Southern India. In this study, hydatid serological data from January 2019 to December 2022 were collected in March 2023 and retrospectively analysed in April 2023. All the serum samples that tested positive for Enzyme Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay (ELISA) for echinococcosis during the period from January 2019 to December 2022 were included. The demographic details such as age, gender, place of residence, etc., of the patients whose samples were included were collected from their case records. These samples were then analysed using Microsoft Excel for proportions and percentages. Results: The study showed that the seroprevalence of hydatid disease was 70 (34%) out of 206 samples tested. The seroprevalence was higher in the older age group (>45 years), with 41 (58.6%) cases. It was observed that males and females were almost equally infected, with minor differences in the prevalence of 37 (52.9%) males and 33 (47.1%) females. Conclusion: As the prevalence of hydatid disease in Southern India was unknown, it was observed to be lower when compared to other states of India. This study has provided valuable information on the level of exposure of hydatid disease in the population and will help formulate disease control and prevention strategies.

In 2022, we assessed avian influenza A virus subtype H5N6 seroprevalence among the general population in Guangdong Province, China, amid rising numbers of human infections. Among the tested samples, we found 1 to be seropositive, suggesting that the virus poses a low but present risk to the general population.

Introduction: Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) is a highly contagious viral illness caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). Serological surveys help in understanding the burden of past infections. The World Health Organisation (WHO) suggests the need for populationbased sero-epidemiological investigations to acquire data for implementing containment measures. The tribal population, being the most marginalised and vulnerable section, is at a higher risk for COVID-19. However, there is limited literature regarding the seroprevalence of COVID-19 among the tribal population in our country. Aim: To assess the COVID-19 seropositivity, associated factors, and knowledge among adults of tribal origin attending a primary care centre in Wayanad, Kerala. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 279 adults of tribal origin, aged between 18 and 95 years, attending a primary tribal healthcare centre at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi, Kerala, India, from August 2021 to October 2021. A semistructured questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographic details, history of COVID-19 infection, vaccination status, and participants’ knowledge and awareness about COVID-19. Antibody presence was tested using the WANTAI test kit. Data analysis was performed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences(SPSS) version 21.0 A multivariable logistic regression was conducted following univariate analysis to identify independent factors associated with COVID-19 seropositivity. Results: The mean age of the study population was 45.34±15.86 years. Among the 279 participants, the proportion of seropositivity to COVID-19 antibodies was found to be 245 (87.8%) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of 83.98 to 91.62. Regarding knowledge and awareness related to COVID-19, 186 (66.7%) participants were not aware of the common symptoms of COVID19. Individuals aged above 60 years had a five times higher probability of having COVID-19 antibodies compared to those aged 30 years or younger (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 4.71, 95% CI 0.111 to 20.025). Those who had received atleast one dose of the vaccine were nine times more likely to have seropositivity (aOR 8.58, 95% CI 1.390 to 53.028). Conclusion: The seropositivity of COVID-19 was high at 87.8%. Older people and vaccinated individuals were more likely to be seropositive. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen vaccination efforts among all age groups. Continued sero-surveillance and vaccination surveys need to be conducted to gain more insights into the antibody kinetics of this novel pathogen.

Background: The pandemic coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the new severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has resulted in a worldwide abrupt and significant rise in admissions for pneumonia with multiorgan diseases. Aims and Objective: To determine the positive prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in health-care professionals over 6 months. In addition, to make a subgroup analysis and estimate the age, gender, and workforce-based prevalence of SARS-CoV-2. Materials and Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted on 200 healthcare professionals during 6 months. After taking proper informed consent, the study was started. We included subjects aged ≥18 years in this study. Not receiving any other vaccine during the study, suspected or confirmed immunosuppressive condition, imaging confirmed COVID-19 or recent blood transfusions were excluded from the study. Results: Most patients were 26–30 years old. Out of 200 patients, 116 (58%) were males, and 84 (42%) were females. The total positivity of the titers amounts was 57%. In addition, the males had higher mean titers than the females, with 24.186 versus 13.304. Of the 116 males, 68 were positive (58.6%), and of the 84 females, 46 were positive (54.7%). The age-wise positivity of the titers was high among the 26–30 years of age group, of which, in the 53 people, 33 were seropositive, which is 62.2% of this age group and lowest in the 51–55 years age group, of which in the 23 participants 9 were positive (39.31%), and 14 were negative (60.85%). Conclusion: We concluded that male doctors and adults had a greater seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection, suggesting that they are more susceptible to contracting COVID-19 through patient contact or surgical procedures.

Abstract Background There is paucity of hepatitis B virus (HBV) data among student populations although Ghana is HBV endemic. Screening and identification of factors associated with HBV transmission in schools will support the intervention in the elimination of the virus by 2030. This study assessed the seroprevalence and factors associated with HBV among students in two Senior High Schools in the Krachi Nchumuru District in Ghana. Methods Through cross-sectional design and simple random sampling technique, 300 first-year students were enrolled from selected Senior High Schools. Structured questionnaires were used to collect data on demographic and exposure factors while rapid test kit was used to detect HBV infections. Chi-square/Fisher exact test and multivariable logistic regression were performed to determine the association between the variables at a 95% confidence interval and 0.05 significant level. Results Seroprevalence of HBV was 14% (42/300) among the students. The prevalence was significantly (p = 0.001) higher in males 19.4% (34/175) than females 6.4% (8/125). 77.7% (233/300) were aware of HBV infection. Males who were circumcised were 4 times more likely to be infected with HBV (AOR = 4.09, 95%CI = 1.82–9.19) (p = 0.001) compared with those uncircumcised. Conclusion HBV screening and education on hygienic genital circumcision practices must be prioritized in endemic countries.

AbstractIntroduction Mosquito-borne infections are of global health concern because of their rapid spread and upsurge, which creates a risk for coinfections. DENV and ZIKV are transmitted by Aedes aegypti and A. albopictus and are prevalent in Nigeria and neighbouring countries. However, their seroprevalence, burden, hidden endemicity and possible cocirculation are poorly understood in Nigeria.Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study of 871 participants from three regions of Nigeria. All serum samples were analysed using malaria RDT and the immunoblot molecular diagnostic assay recomLine Tropical Fever for the presence of arboviral antibody serological marker IgG (Mikrogen Diagnostik, Neuried, Germany) with DENV and ZIKV Nonstructural protein 1 (NS 1), DENV and ZIKV Equad (variant of the envelope protein with designated mutations to increase specificity), according to the manufacturer’s instructions.Results The overall IgG antibody seropositivity against DENV-flavivirus was 44.7% (389/871); 95% CI (41.41–47.99), while ZIKV-flavivirus was 19.2% (167/871); 95% CI (0.16–0.21), and DENV-ZIKV-flavivirus cocirculation antibody seropositivity was 6.2%5 (54/871); 95% CI (0.6–0.7) in the three study regions of Nigeria. The study cohort presented similar clinical signs and symptoms of flaviviruses (DENV and ZIKV) in all three study regions.Conclusion This study highlighted an unexpectedly high antibody seropositivity, burden, hidden endemicity, and regional spread of mono- and co-circulating flaviviruses (DENV and ZIKV) in Nigeria.Key messagesDengue flavivirus sero-cross-reactivity drives antibody-dependent enhancement of ZIKV infection.Both viruses share common hosts (humans) and vectors (primarily Aedes aegypti), and are thus influenced by similar biological, ecological, and economic factors, resulting in epidemiological synergy.Additionally, the actual burden in epidemic and interepidemic periods is grossly or chronically unknown and underreported. Despite this trend and the potential public health threat, there are no reliable data, and little is known about these arboviral co-circulation infections.

Lyme borreliosis (LB), a tick-borne infection caused by bacteria in the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex, is increasingly prevalent on the Balkan Peninsula, including Bulgaria, where it is the most common tick-borne disease. This study aimed to assess the seroprevalence of LB across Bulgaria by analyzing 1892 serum samples for specific IgG antibodies using a two-tier testing protocol involving an ELISA and immunoblot methods. The results revealed an overall seroprevalence rate of 5.4%, with significant variation based on age, sex, and residence. Seroprevalence increased with age, peaking at 8.4% in individuals over 65 years. Males had a seroprevalence of 8.4% compared to 3.3% in females, and rural residents showed higher seroprevalence (10.2%) compared to urban residents (4.4%). Regional analysis indicated that seroprevalence ranged from 0.0% to 20.0%, with higher rates in northern provinces such as Gabrovo (18.9%) and Targovishte (20.0%). This study highlights the importance of two-step testing protocols for accurate diagnosis and underscores the need for increased awareness and further research to enhance public health measures and the management of LB in Bulgaria.

Introduction There are limited longitudinal data on the systemic and mucosal antibody responses to SARS-CoV-2 from Latin America, a region severely affected by COVID-19, and where vaccine strategies have been implemented during the evolving pandemic. Objective To evaluate determinants of seroprevalence and changes in levels of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies longitudinally in adults with different levels of exposure to SARS-CoV-2 (defined a priori as low, medium, and high based on presumed occupational risk), in two Andean cities in Ecuador. Methods Longitudinal cohort study of 1,000 adults aged 18 years and older with questionnaire data and sample collection done at 0, 3, 6, and 12 months during the period 2020-2023. Observations collected included WHO-ISARIC questionnaire and peripheral blood and saliva samples for measurement of IgG and IgA antibodies, respectively. Planned analyses are tailored to the longitudinal nature of the outcomes defined by participants’ antibody levels and aim at estimating their average trends with time since infection in each of the occupational groups, adjusted for demographics and calendar-time levels of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the general population. The latter reflect the impact of the national control measures such as vaccinations and movement restrictions. Importance Understanding the duration and the dynamics of waning immunity to SARS-CoV-2, in the context of exposures to emerging virus variants and immunization, will inform the implementation of targeted public health strategies in the Latin American region. Ethics and Dissemination This study will observe the bioethical principles of the Declaration of Helsinki. Informed written consent will be obtained. Samples from participants will be stored for up to three years after which they will be destroyed. The study protocol was approved by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Public Health Ethics Committee for COVID-19 Research. Antibody results will be provided to participants and participating institutions and to the national health authorities.

Background: Syphilis is a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) caused by Treponema pallidum with significant public health importance. Based on the clinical presentation syphilis is classified into primary, secondary, tertiary and latent syphilis. Lab diagnosis of syphilis can be done by serological methods using specific treponemal and non treponemal tests. Testing strategies like traditional, reverse and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) are currently used as principal diagnostic algorithms. Aim and Objectives: To compare the seropositivity among three diagnostic algorithms for syphilis serodiagnosis and data analysis using WHO NET software. Material and Methods: All the samples received for syphilis serology were tested by Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) and rapid immunochromatographic card methods. Three diagnostic algorithms were used. In traditional algorithm, the sample was first tested with RPR (non-treponemal test) and if reactive then interpreted as a case of syphilis. In reverse algorithm, a specific treponemal card test was done and if reactive a second non treponemal test like RPR was performed. A second rapid immunochromatographic test was also performed. In the case of the ECDC algorithm two specific card tests were performed and interpreted. WHO NET software was utilized for data entry and analysis. The coefficient of agreement (k value) was analyzed by using QuickCalcs GraphPad software. Results: A total of 1292 samples were tested, and 4 (0.3%) samples were reactive by traditional algorithm. By reverse and ECDC algorithm 14 (1.08%) of the samples were considered as reactive. Overall, four samples were identified as cases of definite/current syphilis and ten samples were considered as cases of probable early current / latent or treated syphilis. Reverse algorithm and ECDC algorithm detected more cases. The missed diagnosis percentage was 10 (71.42%) for traditional algorithm. Antenatal patients comprised of 334 (25.85%) samples with seropositivity of 0.29%. Maximum samples were received from the age group of 21 to 30 years 484 (37.46%). Strong degree of agreement was observed between reverse and ECDC algorithm (k value- 0.832). Conclusion: Reverse or ECDC algorithm can be implemented in the laboratory routinely to avoid missing cases of early syphilis. The specific treponemal card tests available in immunochromatography formats are easy to perform and interpret. The usage of WHO NET for analysis of data and along with including specific comments individualized for each patient in the lab reports could give valuable insight.

Background: Blood transfusion has become a specialized modality of patient management and every year saves the millions of lives. However, it is not always safe and may lead to many life threatening complications among which transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) such as hepatitis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are most significant and detrimental for the recipients. Hence, an integrated strategy for blood safety is required for the elimination of TTIs and or provision of safe and adequate blood transfusion services to the people. Aims and Objectives: To assess the seroprevalence of HIV infections among whole blood donors at Sheri Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, Srinagar. Materials and Methods: This was a hospital-based study carried in the postgraduate department of blood transfusion and immunohematology SKIMS, Soura, Srinagar over a period of 7 years from January 2015 to December 2021. All donor samples were screened for HIV by the ELISA method. Results: Overall, seroprevalence of HIV was found to be 0.013%. All the positive cases were male donors. Seroprevalence was the highest among replacement donors (0.011%) as compared to voluntary donors (0.001 %). Conclusion: It is very important to continue the screening of donated blood with highly sensitive and specific tests and to counsel donors who are reactive to any of the infectious diseases (like HIV, hepatitis B virus, HCV, syphilis, or malaria) and conduct extensive public awareness programs and measures to make transfusion of blood and blood components safe.

Objectives The assessment of the prevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in various professional groups is very important. Hence, the purpose of the following study was to analyze the seroprevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies among employees performing both medical and nonmedical professions before the launch of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Material and Methods The study was conducted among employers of 1 of the institutions: The Provincial Specialist Hospital of Władysław Biegański in Łódź, Poland, Radio Łódź and the Border Guards of Łódź Airport. Blood samples were collected in December 2020–February 2021. Patients were screened for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Simultaneously respondents were asked to complete a self-designed questionnaire including demographic data, detailed profession, history of SARS-CoV-2 infection and willingness to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Results Seroprevalence was significantly higher in the group of rural residents (p < 0.012), participants who declared previous COVID-19 infection (p < 0.001) and healthcare workers (HCWs) (p = 0.002), especially nurses (35.5%, p = 0.003) and medics worked in areas dedicated to COVID-19 than in other specialties (38.7% vs. 26.8%, respectively, p = 0.017). There was no association between the presence of antibodies and the gender (p = 0.118), age (p = 0.559) or BMI (p = 0.998). Conclusions Healthcare workers, in particular nurses, are at high risk of contracting COVID-19 in the workplace. Occupational infections can occur during occur not only during contact with the patient, but also with members of the medical team who do not show typical symptoms of the disease. Shortages in medical staff may also increase the number of infections among HCWs. Medical and hospital staff providing health services during the COVID-19 epidemic in Poland, may seek compensation in the event of consequences related to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Background and aims: COVID-19 is undoubtedly underestimated in the South Kivu region due to the inaccessibility of reference diagnostic tests. In this context, serological tests could help estimate the disease’s circulation. This study analyzed the dynamics in the SARS-CoV-2 antibodies seroprevalence in Bukavu, East of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Methods: The results of SARS-CoV-2 antibody tests performed in 2020 (n = 1100), 2021 (n = 508), and 2022-2023 (n = 246) in 4 clinics in Bukavu underwent analysis. Any subject, regardless of age, gender, and origin, was eligible for voluntary SARS-CoV-2 antibody screening. The screening was performed to determine the immune status for professional reasons or clinical clarification in symptomatic subjects. For this purpose, 4 mL of blood was obtained from an antecubital venipuncture for biological analysis. The data were also collected anonymously and confidentially. These rapid lateral flow immunoassays (Cellex qSARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin G/M [IgG/IgM], and QuickZen COVID-19 IgM/IgG) detected and differentiated SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in volunteer workers and patients. Results: Between 2020 and 2023, the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies (IgG + and IgM + ) increased from 37.9% to 65.4% (P < 0.0001). Early exposure to SARS-CoV-2 (IgM + /IgG-) increased significantly from 5.1% in 2020 to 11.4% in 2021, while it decreased significantly from 11.4% in 2021 to 4.5% in 2022-2023 (P < 0.0001). Full immunization (IgM-/IgG + ) increased from 2.5% in 2020 to 34.1% in 2022-2023. Age between 40 and 59 years (adjusted OR [95% CI]: 1.6 [1.3-2.1], P < 0.0001) and ≥ 60 years (adjusted OR [95% CI]: 1.6 [1.2-2.1], P = 0.001), as well as exposure periods 2021 (adjusted OR [95% CI]: 2.0 [1.6-2.5], P < 0.0001) and especially 2022-2023 (adjusted OR [95% CI]: 3.4 [2.5-4.7], P < 0.0001) remained independent predictors of SARS-CoV-2 antibody seroprevalence. Conclusion: The findings of the present study demonstrated extremely high exposure to SARS-CoV-2 and full immunization of a significant proportion of the screened subjects. These results would explain the marginalization of new waves of COVID-19 in Bukavu despite low access to vaccination.

A nationwide survey of SARS-CoV-2 antinucleocapsid seroprevalence among blood donors in Japan revealed that, as of November 2022, infection-induced seroprevalence of the population was 28.6% (95% CI 27.6%–29.6%). Seroprevalence studies might complement routine surveillance and ongoing monitoring efforts to provide a more complete real-time picture of COVID-19 burden.

Despite the availability of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) vaccines, the incidence of TBE is increasing. To understand the historical patterns of infection, we conducted a global meta-analysis of studies before December 2023 reporting human antibody prevalence against TBEV (TBE virus) among general or high-risk population groups stratified by country, collection year, serological method, and vaccination status. Pooled data were compared within groups over time by random-effects modeling. In total, 2403 articles were retrieved; 130 articles published since 1959 were included. Data were extracted from 96 general populations (117,620 participants) and 71 high-risk populations (53,986 participants) across 33 countries. Germany had the most population groups (21), and Poland had the most participants (44,688). Seven serological methods were used; conventional IgG/IgM ELISAs were the most common (44%). Four studies (1.7%) used NS1-ELISA serology. Between 1956–1991 and 1992–2022, anti-TBEV seroprevalence remained at ~2.75% across all population groups from “high-risk” areas (p = 0.458) but decreased within general populations (1.7% to 1%; p = 0.001) and high-risk populations (5.1% to 1.3%; p < 0.001), possibly due to differences in the study methodologies between periods. This global summary explores how serological methods can be used to assess TBE vaccination coverage and potential exposure to TBEV or measure TBE burden and highlights the need for standardized methodology when conducting TBE seroprevalence studies to compare across populations.

Measles and rubella remain global health threats, despite the availability of safe and effective vaccines. Estimates of population immunity are crucial for achieving elimination goals and assessing the impact of vaccination programs, yet conducting well-designed serosurveys can be challenging, especially in resource-limited settings. In this review, we provide a comprehensive assessment of 130 measles and rubella studies published from January 2014 to January 2024. Methodologies and design aspects of serosurveys varied greatly, including sample size, assay type, and population demographics. Most studies utilized enzyme immunoassays for IgG detection. Sample sizes showed diverse sampling methods but favored convenience sampling despite its limitations. Studies spanned 59 countries, predominantly including adults, and revealed disparities in seroprevalence across demographics, regions, and notably among migrants and women. Age-related declines in antibodies were observed, particularly among infants, and correlations between vaccination status and seropositivity varied. We conclude with an outlook on measles and rubella serosurveillance, emphasizing the need for proper survey design and the advantages of standardized, multiplex serology assays.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) poses significant health concerns worldwide, particularly among people living with HIV (PLWHIV), due to an increased risk of chronic infection and progression to cirrhosis in individuals with low CD4 cell counts. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, chronicity potential, and risk factors of HEV infection among PLWHIV in Greece, where data are currently absent. A synchronic multicentric study encompassing five major Greek university hospitals was executed over 24 months, recruiting 696 PLWHIV participants. The prevalence of HEV IgG antibodies was 16.5%, with 8.6% showing evidence of acute HEV infection (HEV IgM). Active viral replication (HEV RNA) was present in 2.3% of the study population. Longitudinal analysis revealed that of the 25 initially anti-HEV IgM-positive individuals, only 3 seroconverted to IgG positivity, and among those with prior HEV RNA positivity (16), none showed evidence of active replication in subsequent tests. Comparative subgroup analysis highlighted the lack of significant differences in HIV-related parameters between HEV seropositive and seronegative individuals. Laboratory evaluations generally showed no significant disparities across most parameters; however, a higher seropositivity for Hepatitis A was observed in the HEV-positive subgroup. Our findings highlight a considerable prevalence of HEV among PLWHIV in Greece, with no observed cases of chronicity.

Background: Measles seroprevalence data have potential to be a useful tool for understanding transmission dynamics and for decision making efforts to strengthen immunization programs. In this study, we conducted a systematized review and bias assessment of all primary data on measles seroprevalence in low- and middle-income countries (as defined by World Bank 2021 income classifications) published from 1962 to 2021. Methods: On 9 March 2022, we searched PubMed for all available data. We included studies containing primary data on measles seroprevalence and excluded studies if they were clinical trials or brief reports, from only health-care workers, suspected measles cases, or only vaccinated persons. We extracted all available information on measles seroprevalence, study design, and seroassay protocol. We conducted a bias assessment based on multiple categories and classified each study as having low, moderate, severe, or critical bias. This review was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022326075). Results: We identified 221 relevant studies across all World Health Organization regions, decades, and unique age ranges. The overall crude mean seroprevalence across all studies was 78.0% (SD: 19.3%), and the median seroprevalence was 84.0% (IQR: 72.8–91.7%). We classified 80 (36.2%) studies as having severe or critical overall bias. Studies from country-years with lower measles vaccine coverage or higher measles incidence had higher overall bias. Conclusions: While many studies have substantial underlying bias, many studies still provide some insights or data that could be used to inform modelling efforts to examine measles dynamics and programmatic decisions to reduce measles susceptibility.

SARS-CoV-2 can infect domestic animals such as cats and dogs. The zoonotic origin of the disease requires surveillance on animals. Seroprevalence studies are useful tools for detecting previous exposure because the short period of virus shedding in animals makes detection of the virus difficult. We report on an extensive serosurvey on pets in Spain that covered 23 months. We included animals with exposure to SARS-CoV-2–infected persons, random animals, and stray animals in the study. We also evaluated epidemiologic variables such as human accumulated incidence and spatial location. We detected neutralizing antibodies in 3.59% of animals and showed a correlation between COVID-19 incidence in humans and positivity to antibody detection in pets. This study shows that more pets were infected with SARS-CoV-2 than in previous reports based on molecular research, and the findings highlight the need to establish preventive measures to avoid reverse zoonosis events.

ABSTRACT Aim: Viral hepatitis agents include Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C virus, which cause an important public health problem due to serious complications. Patients examined at the outpatient clinics of internal medicine are among main risk groups, as they have concomitant diseases and undergo various procedures. We aimed to investigate retrospectively the seroprevalence of viral hepatitis in outpatients in internal medicine in our region. Material and Methods: HBsAg and Anti-HCV parameters, and demographic data such as age and gender of patients admitted at the outpatient clinics of internal medicine at our hospital between January 2017 and July 2022 were retrospectively evaluated, with HBV-DNA and HCV-RNA levels of those who showed reactivity. Results: HBsAg test results of 2618 patients and Anti-HCV test results of 2943 patients were obtained in this study. The mean age of patients with HBsAg tests was 34.2±15.7, and mean age of patients with Anti-HCV test was 34.3±15.7 years. HBsAg reactivity rate was 0.9%; and the mean age of patients showing reactivity was 47.7±14.4 years. Anti-HCV reactivity rate was %0.1, with a mean age of 52.6±21.3 years. Both HBsAg and Anti-HCV reactivity was not present at the same patient in our study. Conclusion: Early diagnosis of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C viruses decrease the risk of developing complications, easing treatment processes and decreasing the risk of contagion. Thus, increasing use of screening tests as part of preventive medicine is very important.

Background: Syphilis continues to be a significant global health concern, particularly among antenatal women due to its potential adverse outcomes for both the fetus and the mother. The Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) test is widely used for screening and diagnosis of syphilis. However, there are concerns about its reliability in antenatal settings since it is known to exhibit false-positive reactivity. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of biological false-positive (BFP) among VDRL-reactive pregnant females. Method: A retrospective analysis of 11,198 VDRL test results from female patients was done over a two-year period, with 3,402 samples obtained from pregnant females and 7,796 samples from non-pregnant females. Result: The results revealed a higher proportion of VDRL reactivity among pregnant females (1.21%) compared to non-pregnant females (0.9%). Statistical analysis did not demonstrate a significant association between VDRL titers and Treponema Pallidum Haemagglutination Assay (TPHA) positivity. Conclusion: Among pregnant females, a substantial proportion of those with lower VDRL titers tested negative for TPHA, indicating the presence of BFP results. These findings underscore the importance of implementing comprehensive testing strategies that combine non-treponemal and treponemal tests to improve the accuracy of syphilis diagnosis, particularly in pregnant populations.

Background: In poor nations like India, enteric fever is a severe health issue. For the purpose of diagnosing enteric fever, the Widal test is frequently utilized. In the Western Region of India, this study attempted to measure the baseline antibody titres for Salmonella typhi and paratyphi A, B in healthy persons. Methods: A total of 150 blood samples from healthy persons were taken, and the pattern of antibody titre was determined using the conventional quantitative tube method. Results: Among 150 blood samples, 103 had shown significant antibody titres (≥ 1:20). The significant proportion (10.7%) of the individuals had anti-O titre ≥ 1:80. Similarly, 86 had anti-H titres of ≥ 1:20 to S. enteric serotype typhi, 23 had a titre of ≥1:80 and 4 had a titre of ≥1:160 respectively. We found 10% and 1.3% for paratyphi A and B, anti-H titres of ≥ 1:20respectively. Conclusion: The study's findings suggest that the Western Development Region of India should modify the threshold values for antibody titres against S. typhi to > 1:80 for both anti-O and anti-H titres.

Background Hepatitis A (HepA) vaccination and economic factors can change the epidemiology of HepA. In China, the implementation of free vaccination for children under 1.5 years of age in 2008 has resulted in a decline in the overall incidence of HepA. Nevertheless, further investigation is required to comprehensively understand the epidemiological patterns of HepA in economically disadvantaged regions of China. Method In this study, we evaluated the incidence, seroprevalence, and transmission characteristics of HepA in Shaanxi with less economically developed. We obtained data on reported cases of HepA from 2005 to 2020. Blood samples from 1,559 individuals aged 0 to 60 years were tested for anti-hepatitis A (HAV) antibodies. A questionnaire survey and blood sample collection were conducted in two sentinel sites from 2019 to 2021. Result Between 2008 to 2020, the number of reported cases of HepA decreased from 3.44/100,000 person-years to 0.65/100,000 person-years, indicating an 81.1% decrease, which was particularly pronounced among younger age groups (0–19 years). From 2015–2020, infections were more likely to occur in people in their 40s and those over the age of 60. Farmers were still the most common occupation of HepA in the last decade. The results of the serological investigation showed the highest anti-HAV seroprevalence was observed in adults aged 39–60 years (94.6%) and those aged 28–38 years (87.8%). The 10–15 years group had the lowest seroprevalence at 49.3%. During the study period, a total of 22 cases were reported by sentinel sites, but the common risk factors (like raw food exposure, travel history, and closed contact with patients) were not identified. Conclusion Given the greater severity of illness in the adult population and the ambiguous transmission routine, enhanced surveillance for HepA and evaluations that identify feasible approaches to mitigate the risk of HAV transmission are urgent priorities.

Hemodialysis patients are more susceptible to HBV infection because they have low immunity and can be inflicted through an improperly sterilized machine or through a tainted blood transfusion. A cross-sectional study aimed to study the prevalence of HBV among hemodialysis patients in Aljazeera State, Hospital for Renal Disease and Surgery during the period between March and August 2018. A total of ninety-one blood samples were obtained randomly from hemodialysis patients. The plasma was examined for the presence of HBsAg using a sandwich Enzyme-Linked Immuno-Sorbent Assay (ELISA). Data collected by a structured questionnaire included sociodemographic data such as age, sex, marital status, education level, duration of dialysis, previous HBV vaccination, history of surgical operation, history of jaundice and history of blood transfusion. Objective: Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is an obligate intracellular parasite distributed worldwide. Serological tests investigating antibodies specific to T. gondii are widely used in diagnosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of anti-T. gondii IgG, anti-T. gondii IgM, and anti-T. gondii IgG avidity tests, which were sent to the Serology Laboratory of Trakya University Health Center for Medical Research and Practice, retrospectively. Methods: Anti-T. gondii IgM, anti-T. gondii IgG, and anti-T. gondii IgG avidity tests were studied by enzyme-linked fluorescent assay or electrochemiluminescence immunoassay method between January 2012 and December 2021. The test results were evaluated retrospectively from laboratory records. Results: Of 18,659 serum samples were studied for anti-T. gondii IgG, 5,127 (27.5%) samples were positive, whereas 721 (3.4%) of 21,108 samples were positive for anti-T. gondii IgM. Of the 593 serum samples tested for IgG avidity, 206 (34.7%) samples had low avidity, 118 (19.9%) had borderline, and 269 (45.4%) had high avidity. Conclusion: Our study, compatible with other studies, showed that seropositivity is high in our region, which is not negligible. Especially in women of reproductive age population, T. gondii should be considered in suspected clinical cases.

Objective: Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii), Rubella and Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections can cause severe morbidity in the fetus when transmissed during pregnancy. In our study, it was aimed to examine the seropositivity rates for T. gondii, Rubella and CMV infections in women of childbearing age who applied to our hospital. Methods: Anti-Toxoplasma IgG, anti-Toxoplasma IgM, anti-Rubella IgG, anti-Rubella IgM, anti-CMV IgG and anti-CMV were studied in women of childbearing age (18-49 years old) who applied to our hospital’s outpatient clinics between January 2018 and December 2020. The tests were performed in our microbiology laboratory using the ELISA method on Architect i2000 (Abbott, USA) and COBAS e601 (Roche, Germany) devices. Results: As a result of the data obtained, the percentages of IgM and IgG positivity for anti-Toxoplasma were calculated as 1.4% and 30.9%, respectively. Anti-Rubella IgM positivity was 0.7%, anti-Rubella IgG positivity was 91%, anti-CMV IgG positivity was 98.8%, and anti-CMV IgM positivity was 2%. Conclusion: Having its own seroprevalence for each region has is important in terms of planning pregnancy screenings. The seropositivity rates in our region are in line with other studies in the country. Since CMV seropositivity is very high in the population and there is no effective treatment or vaccine, screening may not be not necessary. T. gondii and Rubella screenings can be recommended due to the lower immunity rates and the availability of vaccine and treatment options.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in hemodialysis (HD) patients and to reveal the importance of toxoplasmosis as a risk factor in these patients. Methods: The study was carried out between 26.12.2013 and 01.01.2016 at Van Yüzüncü University Dursun Odabaş the Medical Center on patients with chronic renal failure who entered HD. As the patient group in the study, 150 patients with chronic renal failure who underwent HD; as the control group, 50 people without any known chronic disease and who did not receive any immunosuppressive therapy were included. The ELISA method was used to determine anti-T. gondii IgG and IgM antibody levels. A questionnaire including risk factors that may cause the transmission of T. gondii was applied to the patient and control groups. Results: In the study, 89 out of total 150 HD patients (59.3%) were found anti-T. gondii IgG antibody seropositive and 4 were (2.7%) anti-T. gondii IgM antibody seropositive. Background: Measles is one of the most contagious diseases faced by humans. Despite considerable progress, measles remains one of the leading global causes of death among children. Methods and Results: The seroprevalence of antibodies against measles in Kosovo was determined with a serological survey of measles. In total, 768 participants aged between 3 days and 45 years of both sexes were included. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay results revealed total seropositivity of 74.5% (95% CI: 0.70–0.88) among participants. Those in the unvaccinated 0–1.9-year age group had the lowest seropositivity (33.2%). The 2–6-year age group, which received one dose of the vaccine, had higher seropositivity (78.6%) than the youngest group. The 8–17-year age group, which received two doses of the measles vaccine, had significantly higher seropositivity (91.3%) than the 2–6-year age group.
