Background: The work of data research infrastructure operators is poorly understood, yet the services they provide are used by millions of scientists across the planet. Policy and implications: As the data services and the underlying infrastructure are typically funded through the public purse, it is essential that policymakers, research funders, experts reviewing funding proposals, and possibly even end-users are equipped with a good understanding of the daily tasks of service providers. Recommendations: We suggest drawing parallels between research data infrastructure and road infrastructure. To trigger the imagination and foster understanding, this policy brief contains a table of corresponding aspects of the two classes of infrastructure, and a table of policy implications. Conclusions: Just as economists and specialist evaluators are typically brought in to inform policies and funding decisions for road infrastructure, we encourage this to also be done for research infrastructures more...

Understanding object representations requires a broad, comprehensive sampling of the objects in our visual world with dense measurements of brain activity and behavior. Here, we present THINGS-data, a multimodal collection of large-scale neuroimaging and behavioral datasets in humans, comprising densely sampled functional MRI and magnetoencephalographic recordings, as well as 4.70 million similarity judgments in response to thousands of photographic images for up to 1,854 object concepts. THINGS-data is unique in its breadth of richly annotated objects, allowing for testing countless hypotheses at scale while assessing the reproducibility of previous findings. Beyond the unique insights promised by each individual dataset, the multimodality of THINGS-data allows combining datasets for a much broader view into object processing than previously possible. Our analyses demonstrate the high quality of the datasets and provide five examples of hypothesis-driven and data-driven applications. THINGS-data constitutes the core public release of the THINGS initiative (https://things-initiative.org) for bridging the gap between disciplines and the advancement of cognitive neuroscience. more...

Background: Research Software is a concept that has been only recently clarified. In this paper we address the need for a similar enlightenment concerning the Research Data concept. Methods: Our contribution begins by reviewing the Research Software definition, which includes the analysis of software as a legal concept, followed by the study of its production in the research environment and within the Open Science framework. Then we explore the challenges of a data definition and some of the Research Data definitions proposed in the literature. Results: We propose a Research Data concept featuring three characteristics: the data should be produced (collected, processed, analyzed, shared & disseminated) to answer a scientific question, by a scientific team, and has yield a result published or disseminated in some article or scientific contribution of any kind. Conclusions: The analysis of this definition and the context in which it is proposed provides some answers to the Borgman’s conundrum challenges, that is, which Research Data might be shared, by whom, with whom, under what conditions, why, and to what effects. They are completed with answers to the questions: how? and where? more...

Background: Open Science seeks to render research outputs visible, accessible and reusable. In this context, Research Data and Research Software sharing and dissemination issues provide real challenges to the scientific community, as consequence of recent progress in political, legal and funding requirements. Methods: We take advantage from the approach we have developed in a precedent publication, in which we have highlighted the similarities between the Research Data and Research Software definitions. Results: The similarities between Research Data and Research Software definitions can be extended to propose protocols for Research Data dissemination and evaluation derived from those already proposed for Research Software dissemination and evaluation. We also analyze FAIR principles for these outputs. Conclusions: Our proposals here provide concrete instructions for Research Data and Research Software producers to make them more findable and accessible, as well as arguments to choose suitable dissemination platforms to complete the FAIR framework. Future work could analyze the potential extension of this parallelism to other kinds of research outputs that are disseminated under similar conditions to those of Research Data and Research Software, that is, without widely accepted publication procedures involving editors or other external actors and where the dissemination is usually restricted through the hands of the production team. more...

Background: Numerous mechanisms exist to incentivise researchers to share their data. This scoping review aims to identify and summarise evidence of the efficacy of different interventions to promote open data practices and provide an overview of current research. Methods: This scoping review is based on data identified from Web of Science and LISTA, limited from 2016 to 2021. A total of 1128 papers were screened, with 38 items being included. Items were selected if they focused on designing or evaluating an intervention or presenting an initiative to incentivise sharing. Items comprised a mixture of research papers, opinion pieces and descriptive articles. Results: Seven major themes in the literature were identified: publisher/journal data sharing policies, metrics, software solutions, research data sharing agreements in general, open science ‘badges’, funder mandates, and initiatives. Conclusions: A number of key messages for data sharing include: the need to build on existing cultures and practices, meeting people where they are and tailoring interventions to support them; the importance of publicising and explaining the policy/service widely; the need to have disciplinary data champions to model good practice and drive cultural change; the requirement to resource interventions properly; and the imperative to provide robust technical infrastructure and protocols, such as labelling of data sets, use of DOIs, data standards and use of data repositories. more...

Background Many scholarly journals have established their own data-related policies, which specify their enforcement of data sharing, the types of data to be submitted, and their procedures for making data available. However, except for the journal impact factor and the subject area, the factors associated with the overall strength of the data sharing policies of scholarly journals remain unknown. This study examines how factors, including impact factor, subject area, type of journal publisher, and geographical location of the publisher are related to the strength of the data sharing policy. Methods From each of the 178 categories of the Web of Science’s 2017 edition of Journal Citation Reports, the top journals in each quartile (Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4) were selected in December 2018. Of the resulting 709 journals (5%), 700 in the fields of life, health, and physical sciences were selected for analysis. Four of the authors independently reviewed the results of the journal website searches, categorized the journals’ data sharing policies, and extracted the characteristics of individual journals. Univariable multinomial logistic regression analyses were initially conducted to determine whether there was a relationship between each factor and the strength of the data sharing policy. Based on the univariable analyses, a multivariable model was performed to further investigate the factors related to the presence and/or strength of the policy. Results Of the 700 journals, 308 (44.0%) had no data sharing policy, 125 (17.9%) had a weak policy, and 267 (38.1%) had a strong policy (expecting or mandating data sharing). The impact factor quartile was positively associated with the strength of the data sharing policies. Physical science journals were less likely to have a strong policy relative to a weak policy than Life science journals (relative risk ratio [RRR], 0.36; 95% CI [0.17–0.78]). Life science journals had a greater probability of having a weak policy relative to no policy than health science journals (RRR, 2.73; 95% CI [1.05–7.14]). Commercial publishers were more likely to have a weak policy relative to no policy than non-commercial publishers (RRR, 7.87; 95% CI, [3.98–15.57]). Journals by publishers in Europe, including the majority of those located in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, were more likely to have a strong data sharing policy than a weak policy (RRR, 2.99; 95% CI [1.85–4.81]). Conclusions These findings may account for the increase in commercial publishers’ engagement in data sharing and indicate that European national initiatives that encourage and mandate data sharing may influence the presence of a strong policy in the associated journals. Future research needs to explore the factors associated with varied degrees in the strength of a data sharing policy as well as more diverse characteristics of journals related to the policy strength. more...

Objectives: Patients needing palliative care prefer to be cared for in the comfort of their homes. Although private home health-care services are entering the health-care ecosystem in India, for the majority it is still institution-based. Here, we describe a model of home-based palliative care developed by the Tata Memorial Hospital, a government tertiary care cancer hospital. Materials and Methods: Data on patient demographics, services provided and outcomes were collected prospectively for patients for the year November 2013 - October 2019. In the 1st year, local general physicians were trained in palliative care principles, bereavement services and out of hours telephone support were provided. In the 2nd year, data from 1st year were analysed and discussed among the study investigators to introduce changes. In the 3rd year, the updated patient assessment forms were implemented in practice. In the 4th year, the symptom management protocol was implemented. In the 5th and 6th year, updated process of patient assessment data and symptom management protocol was implemented as a complete model of care. Results: During the 6 years, 250 patients were recruited, all suffering from advanced cancer. Home care led to good symptom control, improvement of quality of life for patients and increased satisfaction of caregivers during the care process and into bereavement. Conclusion: A home-based model of care spared patients from unnecessary hospital visits and was successful in providing client centred care. A multidisciplinary team composition allowed for holistic care and can serve as a model for building palliative care capacity in low- and middle-income countries. more...

Leukemia is a cancer that can be treated in a variety of ways: chemotherapy, radiation therapy and stem cell transplant. Recovery rates for this disease are relatively high, the treatment itself has a painful effect on the body and is accompanied by numerous side effects that can persist years after the patient is cured. For this reason, efforts are underway worldwide to develop more selective therapies that will only affect leukemia cells and not healthy cells. Knowledge of developmental GRN is yet scarce, and it is early for a systematic comparative effort. We consider mathematical model of genetic regulatory networks. This model consists of a nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations. We describe the changes that system undergoes if the entries of the regulatory matrix are perturbed in some way. We discuss, how attractors for high-dimensional systems can be constructed, using known attractors of low-dimensional systems. Examples and visualizations are provided. more...

Hypertension is called the "silent killer" which is a risk factor for heart disease, stroke and kidney failure. High blood pressure that can not protect properly will increase the mortality and morbidity. Elderly patients aged ≥ 60 years, most of them already have hypertension and even have experienced the risk factors caused by hypertension. The goal of therapy is not to exacerbate organ damage and reduce mortality and improve patient quality so that evaluation is necessary, especially for the selection of antihypertensive drugs. This study aims to meet the suitability of the types of antihypertensive drugs given to elderly patients at the General Hospital of Imelda Pekerja Indonesia Medan with the standard of hypertension treatment. Research data collection was carried out in a retrospective manner in the period January-April 2020. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 21, JNC VIII (2016) method. There were 9 patients (28.1%), the use of antihypertensive drugs in elderly patients who did not comply with the standard recommendations for hypertension therapy and 23 patients (71.9%) who used antihypertensive drugs in accordance with JNC VIII standards. more...

Despite the fact that the phenomenon of unrecovered coronary blood flow (no-reflow) has long been known, there is still no unanimous opinion about the predictors and, accordingly, the risk groups for its occurrence. This prevents predicting the further course of the disease and investigating the effectiveness of therapeutic and surgical methods for preventing the consequences of reperfusion in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, which in turn worsens the postoperative and long-term prognosis in this group of patients. We used the search engines E-library, Google Scholar and Pubmed to search for studies on this issue. The article presents and analyzes research data covering the predictors of the no-reflow phenomenon. The difficulties in identifying them are also described, the issue of a diagnostic approach ans sampling for research is raised. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the risk of an avoidable adverse event for high‐need patients in England and Germany and the causal impact that has on outcomes. DATA SOURCES: We use administrative, secondary data for all hospital inpatients in 2018. Patient records for the English National Health Service are provided by the Hospital Episode Statistics database and for the German health care system accessed through the Research Data Center of the Federal Statistical Office. STUDY DESIGN: We calculated rates of three hospital‐acquired adverse events and their causal impact on mortality and length of stay through propensity score matching and estimation of average treatment effects. DATA COLLECTION/EXTRACTION METHODS: Patients were identified based on diagnoses codes and translated Patient Safety Indicators developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: For the average hospital stay, the risk of an adverse event was 5.37% in the English National Health Service and 3.26% in the German health care system. High‐need patients are more likely to experience an adverse event, driven by hospital‐acquired infections (2.06%–4.45%), adverse drug reactions (2.37%–2.49%), and pressure ulcers (2.25%–0.45%). Adverse event risk is particularly high for patients with advancing illnesses (10.50%–27.11%) and the frail elderly (17.75%–28.19%). Compared to the counterfactual, high‐need patients with an adverse event are more likely to die during their hospital stay and experience a longer length of stay. CONCLUSIONS: High‐need patients are particularly vulnerable with an adverse event risking further deterioration of health status and adding resource use. Our results indicate the need to assess the costs and benefits of a hospital stay, particularly when care could be provided in settings considered less hazardous. more...

Objective With the increasing complexity of oncological therapy, the number of inpatient admissions to radiotherapy and non-radiotherapy departments might have changed. In this study, we aim to quantify the number of inpatient cases and the number of radiotherapy fractions delivered under inpatient conditions in radiotherapy and non-radiotherapy departments. Methods The analysis is founded on data of all hospitalized cases in Germany based on Diagnosis-Related Group Statistics (G-DRG Statistics, delivered by the Research Data Centers of the Federal Statistical Office). The dataset includes information on the main diagnosis of cases (rather than patients) and the performed procedures during hospitalization based on claims of reimbursement. We used linear regression models to analyze temporal trends. The considered data encompass the period from 2008 to 2017. Results Overall, the number of patients treated with radiotherapy as inpatients remained constant between 2008 (N = 90,952) and 2017 (N = 88,998). Starting in January 2008, 48.9% of 4000 monthly cases received their treatment solely in a radiation oncology department. This figure decreased to 43.7% of 2971 monthly cases in October 2017. We found a stepwise decrease between December 2011 and January 2012 amounting to 4.3%. Fractions received in radiotherapy departments decreased slightly by 29.3 (95% CI: 14.0–44.5) fractions per month. The number of days hospitalized in radiotherapy departments decreased by 83.4 (95% CI: 59.7, 107.0) days per month, starting from a total of 64,842 days in January 2008 to 41,254 days in 2017. Days per case decreased from 16.2 in January 2008 to 13.9 days in October 2017. Conclusion Our data give evidence to the notion that radiotherapy remains a discipline with an important inpatient component. Respecting reimbursement measures and despite older patients with more comorbidities, radiotherapy institutions could sustain a constant number of cases with limited temporal shifts. more...

Various pedagogical literature describes school failure as a lack of predisposition to acquire basic knowledge and achieve minimum requirements in education. Relying on the method of theoretical analysis with the technique of content analysis, we looked at the causes and measures to prevent failure from a theoretical point of view. Aware of the existence of this phenomenon, we conducted research with the aim of finding out the attitudes of students and reflections of pedagogues on the causes and specific measures to mitigate failure in practice. The research was realized in November 2019 in the Primary School “Ivo Andric” under the management of the city municipality of the Red Cross on the territory of the city of Nis. Research data, obtained using the technique of composing students’ attitudes, showed that excessive demands of parents, the volume of teaching content and the deficit of necessary resources for learning are significant causes of failure. The results of the interview show that the pedagogue pointed out among the significant causes of failure: the family and the circumstances that prevail in it, lack of motivation, apathy and lack of students´ interest. The findings also confirm that both teachers and professional associates apply pedagogical preventive measures, among which the advisory work with students and conversations between teacher - pedagogue - student stood out. The opportunities for improving success are all the greater if both teachers and professional associates show willingness to take responsibility and accept educational challenges. more...

Background: The aim of this study was to compare black tea consumption and caffeine intake with depression status. Subjects and Methods: This study was conducted on 491 adults (M:169, F:322). The average daily caffeine intake of individuals was calculated using the amounts of caffeinated beverages they consumed daily and the caffeine contents of these beverages. The participants’ depression status was determined using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). All of the research data were evaluated using STATA. Results: According to BDI scores, 30.1% of participants had depression. Black tea was consumed by all of the partici- pants and also had the highest consumption level of 620.1±90.4mL and the mean caffeine intake of the participants was 629.5±418.8 mg. Multivariate regression analyses showed that consuming more than 1 cup was protective against depression up to 4 cups. Moreover, a 450-600 mg caffeine intake also reduces the risk of depression than lower or higher intake levels. Conclusion: Our study suggests that black tea consumption up to 4 cups and caffeine intake between 450-600 mg can help protect against depression. Further studies are needed to better understand the protective effects of black tea and caffeine on depression. Keywords: Caffeine; black tea; beck depression inventory; depression. more...

Possible mechanisms involved in sex-dependent differences in the gut microbiota have a growing interest worldwide, but the effects of probiotics dependence on the gender of the host have remained outside of researchers’ attention until now. Previously, our research data described gender-specific differences in the gut microbiota of Armenian Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) patients. Taking into account the possible association of Prevotella spp. with depressive disorders, the aim of the current investigations was an evaluation of changes in the abundance of gut Prevotella of FMF patients in association with the patient’s depression and gender. The differences between healthy and FMF diseased gut microbiota in terms of Prevotella abundance were revealed. In addition, the gender-dependent effects of immunobiotic/psychobiotic Narine on the abundance of gut Prevotella of FMF patients and patients’ depression scores were shown by us in this study. more...

Myocardial reperfusion syndrome is a complex set of pathological processes that occur in the heart muscle due to restoration of coronary blood flow in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. Despite the fact that it has been known for a long time, there is still no unequivocal opinion about the predictors, and, accordingly, the risk groups for its occurrence. This prevents predicting the further course of the disease and studying the effectiveness of surgical and therapeutic methods for preventing the consequences of reperfusion in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, which in turn significantly worsens the postoperative and long-term prognosis in this group of patients. We used the search engines such as E-lilbrary, Google Scholar and Pubmed to search for studies on this issue. The article presents research data highlighting predictors of myocardial reperfusion syndrome. In addition, the problems of verification of irreversible reperfusion injury and myocardial stunning are described. more...

Pyogenic granuloma is a benign vascular formation that occurs as a result of the process of impaired wound healing in combination with vascular proliferation, and which can be regarded as a reactive process. Histologically, pyogenic granuloma is characterized by the growth of granulation tissue with a large number of dilated, swollen capillary endothelium, swollen stroma, sometimes containing an inflammatory infiltrate consisting of lymphocytes, neutrophils, plasma cells and fibroblasts among the loose connective tissue. Exophytic lobular proliferation of capillaries is well expressed, the epidermis is sometimes eroded with peripheral epidermal layers and areas of acanthosis on the periphery. For the last 5 years, in the period from 2015 to 2020, 18 patients with a diagnosis of pyogenic granuloma were hospitalized at the pediatric surgery Clinic of the Vinnytsia National Pirogov Memorial Medical University (Ukraine). The average age of patients was 8.98±0.97 years old. According to the obtained data, the maximum number of patients was in the range of 5–13 years, which coincides with the results of other researchers. Regarding the localization of pyogenic granuloma among all patients of the general study group, it was distributed as follows: head-neck – 14 patients, upper torso – 3 cases and in 1 child a pyogenic tumor was located on the finger. All children underwent surgical removal of pyogenic granuloma within healthy tissues. Complications and recurrences of the disease were not observed in any clinical case. Pediatricians should pay attention to the presence of tumors, especially those that have occurred at the site of injury, even minor, in order to exclude more complex pathology, such as melanoma. The research was carried out in accordance with the principles of the Helsinki Declaration. The study protocol was approved by the Local Ethics Committee of these Institutes. The informed consent of the patient was obtained for conducting the studies. The authors declare no conflicts of interests. Key words: pyogenic granuloma, children, neoplasms. more...

The paper presents the results of empirical study of parents' attitudes towards their children with special educational needs. The following methods have been used: PARI method (E. Schaefer, R. Bell; adaptation by T. Nescheret), test-questionnaire of parental attitude of A. Varga and V. Stolin; questionnaire 'Analysis of family myth' by A. Nesterova. To clarify and deepen the analysis of research data, two samples of selected participants have been created: a) parents of children with special educational needs and b) parents of children without special educational needs. Two Google forms have been made with appropriate introductory questionnaires and research instructions. The analysis of the results obtained by the methods has revealed the following tendencies in the attitude of parents of children with special educational needs, in comparison with parents of other children: lower level of acceptance; greater concentration on the child and his/her control; a kind of inconsistency in the attitude to their children (simultaneous optimal emotional contact and excessive emotional distance); a sense of self-sacrifice and belief in its necessity. It has been proved, that the usage of different types and forms of art therapy (music, dance-movement, bibliotherapy, fairy tale therapy, phototherapy, film therapy, fine art therapy) helps to correct parents' attitude to their children with special educational needs. In addition, a number of recommendations for the use of art therapy to work with parents of children with special educational needs has been proposed. more...
