A bibliometric analysis (BA) is a knowledge synthesis methodology aimed at quantitively summarizing large amounts of bibliometric data. We aimed to summarize the performance of BAs in the health sciences. We searched Scopus for BAs in the health sciences published prior to May 10, 2023. All identified studies were included. We performed a BA on these studies in two steps: performance analysis and science mapping. For the performance analysis, various indicators of scientific production were calculated using the bibliometrix R package. For the science mapping, VOSviewer was used to generate a co-authorship network and a keyword co-occurrence network. In total, 5,828 BAs were analyzed. Scientific production has exploded in the last years, with more than 1,500 BAs published in 2022 alone. Scientific impact (i.e. citations) has also been rising, although at a lesser pace. The mean number of citations per year per BA was 1.78. China was the most productive country, publishing more BAs than the nine other most productive countries combined. China paradoxically had a lower number of citations per publication compared with the nine other most productive countries. International collaborations were rare. Common BA themes included oncology, public health, neurosciences, mental health, artificial intelligence, and COVID-19. BAs are increasingly common in the health sciences, but their performance remains limited. More international collaborations and standardized guidelines could help improve their performance, notably the frequency at which they are cited.

Background: In order to obtain their medical degree, medical students in Morocco are required to carry out a research project and provide a thesis outlining its methodology and findings. However, little is known about the scientific output of these theses. The aim of the present study was to explore and evaluate the characteristics and publication patterns in scientific-indexed journals of medical theses written by medical students in Morocco., Methods: Data was extracted from registered theses between 2011 and 2021 in four medical schools that have an open-source documents archiving platform. Publication of these theses was assessed in 2022 using a search strategy in three indexed databases; Pubmed, Scopus and Web of science., Results: 9807 theses were registered between 2011 and 2021, 41% of them in the faculty of medicine of Rabat. 99.1% of these theses were written in French, 61.7% were reporting a retrospective case series, and 38.9% of them covered surgical disciplines. 83 (0.8%) of the registered theses were published in a scientific-indexed journal, and half of the papers (49.4%) was written in French. The graduate student was the paper's lead author in 54.2% of the papers. The articles driven from the theses were published after a mean delay of 1.49 ± 1.34 years and the targeted journals had a mean SJR score of 0.69 ± 1.21. The total number of detected citations of the 83 published papers was 216., Conclusion: The publication rate of Moroccan medical theses is very low when compared to other countries, which leads to question the real benefit of this time and resources consuming educational activity.

Background: Retraction is an essential procedure for correcting scientific literature and informing readers about articles containing significant errors or omissions. Ethical violations are one of the significant triggers of the retraction process. The objective of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of retracted articles in the medical literature due to ethical violations., Methods: The Retraction Watch Database was utilized for this descriptive study. The 'ethical violations' and 'medicine' options were chosen. The date range was 2010 to 2023. The collected data included the number of authors, the date of publication and retraction, the journal of publication, the indexing status of the journal, the country of the corresponding author, the subject area of the article, and the particular retraction reasons., Results: A total of 177 articles were analyzed. The most retractions were detected in 2019 (n = 29) and 2012 (n = 28). The median time period between the articles' first publication date and the date of retraction was 647 (0-4,295) days. The leading countries were China (n = 47), USA (n = 25), South Korea (n = 23), Iran (n = 14), and India (n = 12). The main causes of retraction were ethical approval issues (n = 65), data-related concerns (n = 51), informed consent issues (n = 45), and fake-biased peer review (n = 30)., Conclusion: Unethical behavior is one of the most significant obstacles to scientific advancement. Obtaining appropriate ethics committee approvals and informed consent forms is crucial in ensuring the ethical conduct of medical research. It is the responsibility of journal editors to ensure that raw data is controlled and peer review processes are conducted effectively. The development of pediatric subspecialties constitutes one of the most outstanding events in pediatrics in our country since the mid-20th century. The FSE in pediatrics is currently based on order SCO/3148/2006, of September 20, which approves and publishes the training program for the specialty of pediatrics and its Specific Areas. It is a training program structured in 4 years that manages to train the resident in the necessary skills of pediatrics, including training in transversal skills, training in general pediatrics and must also include training in different specific areas. In 1995 was approved the Specific Training Area (ACE). In pediatrics, ACEs are necessary to guarantee adequate health care for the child and adolescent population, at the same level as adult medicine, ensuring through regulated training, quality and uniform care. Many factors influence selection of a target journal for publishing scientific papers, including "fit" within the journal's scope, acceptance rate, readership, open access options, submission and publication costs, journal quality, and timeliness of publication. Timeliness of publication can be a critical factor affecting career development, but many journals are not transparent about turnaround times. Here we evaluated 49 journals publishing papers in zoological medicine and related fields between 2017 and 2022, and aggregated and examined distributions of turnaround time of journals that publicly provided the requisite data, in order to aid authors in selecting target journals that best meet their needs. Of 49 journals evaluated, 39 provided necessary dates for reconstructing turnaround times. Of these, median times to acceptance ranged from 37 to 338 days, and median times to publication ranged from 41 to 403.5 days. The percentage of papers published in greater than 1 year ("slow") ranged from 0 to 57.1%, while the percentage of papers published in under 6 months ("timely") ranged from 0.8 to 99.8%. Acceptance rates and times to first decision were available for only 22% and 20%, respectively, of journals evaluated. Background: Honorary authorship refers to the practice of naming an individual who has made little or no contribution to a publication as an author. Honorary authorship inflates the output estimates of honorary authors and deflates the value of the work by authors who truly merit authorship. This manuscript presents the protocol for a systematic review that will assess the prevalence of five honorary authorship issues in health sciences., Methods: Surveys of authors of scientific publications in health sciences that assess prevalence estimates will be eligible. No selection criteria will be set for the time point for measuring outcomes, the setting, the language of the publication, and the publication status. Eligible manuscripts are searched from inception onwards in PubMed, Lens.org , and Dimensions.ai. Two calibrated authors will independently search, determine eligibility of manuscripts, and conduct data extraction. The quality of each review outcome for each eligible manuscript will be assessed with a 14-item checklist developed and piloted for this review. Data will be qualitatively synthesized and quantitative syntheses will be performed where feasible. Criteria for precluding quantitative syntheses were defined a priori. The pooled random effects double arcsine transformed summary event rates of five outcomes on honorary authorship issues with the pertinent 95% confidence intervals will be calculated if these criteria are met. Summary estimates will be displayed after back-transformation. Stata software (Stata Corporation, College Station, TX, USA) version 16 will be used for all statistical analyses. Statistical heterogeneity will be assessed using Tau 2 and Chi 2 tests and I 2 to quantify inconsistency., Discussion: The outcomes of the planned systematic review will give insights in the magnitude of honorary authorship in health sciences and could direct new research studies to develop and implement strategies to address this problem. Aim: to describe the publication rates of the theses in preventive and community medicine supported at the medical university of Tunis from 2012 to 2017 and to determine factors affecting their publication in scientific journals., Methods: descriptive and retrospective study on defended theses in preventive and community medicine listed in the library of the medical university of Tunis. We considered as published thesis, works published as an article or as a published abstract. A multivariate analysis was performed to study the determinants of thesis publication., Results: The study concerned 84 preventive and community medicine theses. Thirty theses were published (35.7%), including 19 theses (63.3%) as research papers, in scientific journals. Almost two-thirds (67.8%) of publications were in French. The publications were mainly submitted (22/56) in two journals: « Revue d'Épidémiologie et de Santé Publique » and « La Tunisie Médicale ». The student's name was mentioned in 63.4% of published works. The determinants of publication in multivariate analysis were the the status of the thesard (p=0.001), the degree of the supervisor (p=0.038), and the formulation of recommendations (p=0.005)., Conclusion: The proportion of publications from preventive and community medicine theses was relatively modest. This is why we must encourage more doctoral students and supervisors to participate in educational seminars on article writing, in order to enrich scientific production by improving the writing quality of their theses.

Purpose: This study aims to provide a cross-sectional view of craniofacial trials and to identify factors associated with completion, publication, and trial longevity., Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of cleft and craniofacial clinical trials registered with ClinicalTrials.gov between September 1999 and April 2020. Predictor variables included funding source, trial design, trial location, number of recruitment sites, and investigator specialty.Study outcomes were completion status, publication status, and trial duration. Univariate comparisons and multivariate regression models were calculated for each outcome., Results: The final sample included 179 clinical trials pertaining to craniofacial care. Nearly all trials were single-center (86.5%), and roughly half of trials were interventional (57.0%) or conducted in the United States (40.5%). No single specialty predominated, although plastic surgery (13.4%) was the most common investigator specialty. The completion rate was 82.7%, the publication rate was 40.8%, and the mean trial duration was 39.1 months. Interventional design (odds ratio = 0.30, P = 0.02) and United States location (odds ratio = 0.15, P < 0.01) were each independently associated with lower odds of trial completion. Trial longevity was independently associated with the National Institute of Health-funding (P < 0.01) and multicenter design (P < 0.01)., Conclusions: Craniofacial trials are multidisciplinary and have a high rate of completion. Although most existing trials were conducted at only a single-center, multicenter efforts significantly increased trial longevity without compromising completion and publication rates. Predatory journals exploit researchers' desire for a fast review process and quick publication; this is achieved at the expense of proper scientific review and high publication costs for the authors. During the last decade, international consensus on what characterises predatory journals and publishers has emerged. The proportion of health sciences articles published in predatory journals is around 2 per cent, considerably lower than in other life sciences and social sciences.  In health sciences, China has the highest proportion of articles published in predatory journals. The phenomenon is widespread both in terms of health disciplines and geography; there are examples of Swedish health science being infiltrated. In The European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity, supporting predatory journals is characterised as an unacceptable practice. There are now tools to be used by researchers who want to avoid publishing in predatory journals.

The publication activity is one of main criteria of assessment of scientific activity of individuals and organizations. The results publications in serious scientific journal is considered as confirmation that study is properly planned, implemented and statistically processed. The inconsistency of research planning and presentation of results in Russia to international requirements is major cause of preventing publication in prominent international editions. to overcome this problem is possible through graduate implementation of international standards initially through education of national researchers and then through development of national standard documentation related to scientific research.

Clinical Research is a complicated process within a research institution or a tertiary care hospital, almost all research project proposal needs to get an institutional review board (IRB) approval before any research activity takes place. IRB approval involves various processes, in form of sub-committees through which the proposal is reviewed. It is of utmost importance to understand the complete functioning of an IRB, in order to automate the various processes using a management system. The Research office entity forms the central body managing the IRB functions. It provides all sorts of administrative support as far as guidelines, documentation, communication and co-ordination is concerned; hence the research office forms the administrative wing of the IRB. Further the IRB has several sub-committees such as the Ethics Committee, Basic Research committee and the Animal Care and Use Committee. Each committee has a chairperson and several members from different specialty to cover all the aspects of research. Each committee may have its own process/workflow of approval, but usually the process of each committee is somewhat similar to each other. Apart from these workflows process the things that needs to be digitized would include researcher's profile, pre-award and post-award management, publication management, graduate student management and research analytics for the organization.

Given the high costs of producing a medical journal, the need to publish clinically relevant information, and the fact that many journals can publish only a small fraction of the many scientific papers they consider, it seems reasonable to wonder whether stories deserve a place in a scholarly medical journal. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the future, in terms of scientific publication, of medical thesis (MT) defended in the Medical School of Lille 2 University (MSL2U) between January 1st, 2001 and December 31st, 2007., Methods: The collection of MT published as a corresponding scientific article was realized from PubMed(®). For every corresponding article, we determined the journal Impact Factor (IF), the language of publication and the rank of the student and his MT director in the author list. Analyses were also realized according to the group of speciality of the TM., Results: In all, 11.3% of the 2150 MT defended in the MSL2U were followed up by a scientific publication. The average IF was 2.32 with a median at 1.75 and extreme values from 0 to 14.78. Seventy percent of the articles were published in English. The rank of the student was placed before his MT director (2.06 vs. 3.15). The MT defended by students in the field of medical specialities presented the highest rate of publication (25.1%). The general medicine was the second speciality the most productive in term of number of published articles (n=49) after medical specialities (n=103)., Conclusion: The MT director and the PhD students must be more motivated to publish their results. The value of 11.3% could be considered as weak but, because of a huge lack of references, it is impossible to compare our results to those of other French medical schools. The European Community is based on a series of treaties and legal decisions, which result from preliminary documents prepared long before by different organizations and lobbies. The European union of medical specialists (Union européenne des médecins specialists [UEMS]) came into being in order to address the questions raised by European directives (e.g., free circulation of people and services, reciprocal recognition of diplomas, medical training, quality improvements). The specialty sections of the UEMS contribute actively to this work. The physical and rehabilitation medicine (PRM) section is composed of three committees: the PRM board is devoted to initial and continuing education and has published a harmonized teaching programme and organized a certification procedure, which can be considered as a European seal of quality; the Clinical Affairs Committee is concerned with the quality of PRM care, and it has set up a European accreditation system for PRM programs of care, which will help to describe PRM clinical activity more concretely; and the Professional Practice Committee works on the fields of competence in our specialty. This third committee has already published a White Book, and further documents are being prepared, based on both the International classification of functioning, disability and health (ICF) and reference texts developed by the French Federation of PRM.

Background: Clerkship directors (CDs) ensure that medical students achieve the core clinical skills needed to be effective physicians. Recently guidelines for time and support for U.S. CDs have been published by the Alliance for Clinical Education., Purpose: This article reviews 14 published surveys of CDs in seven specialties and assesses CDs' personal characteristics, scholarship, and support for their position., Methods: Investigators reviewed CD surveys conducted over the last 12 years from seven different specialties. Comparisons were made of CDs demographics, departmental and school support, time allotted to the position, and publication rates., Results: Department support was generally good, but school support was often felt to be lacking. The number of publications was relatively low. Time allotted for the position was lower than the 50% recommended in all specialties., Conclusions: Many CDs do not feel adequately supported by time or resources. Future studies need to more closely define what support is needed and what impact CD characteristics, scholarship, and resources have on medical student education.

Objectives: To evaluate the impact on career development of a program for scientific training of Dutch medical students in an American academic division for pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition., Materials and Methods: A survey was undertaken of medical students who were trained in the division of pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition at Tufts University and later at Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA. Characteristics of the students, the training period, the scientific output, and their career development were evaluated., Results: A questionnaire was sent to 54 students, of which 39 (72%) responded. The mean time of their rotation was 12.2 +/- 12.1 months. Twenty-five students published 33 scientific manuscripts. Fifteen students obtained a doctorate degree and 4 are involved in a doctorate program. Six theses were directly related to the scientific content of the rotation and were performed under the supervision of American mentors. A total of 59% of the students hold a position as medical specialist, which is a substantially higher percentage than the national average of all graduated medical doctors. Thirty-five percent of them practice pediatrics (of whom 38% practice pediatric gastroenterology) and 22% practice gastroenterology. Seventy-eight percent of the medical specialists hold an academic position., Conclusions: Dutch medical students who are scientifically trained in a US academic division for pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition--where specialists approached all of the students with a special program to involve them in biomedical research--have a great chance to establish a scientific career track and to become a medical specialist.

The Internet has been a breakthrough for Professional Medical Training. Medline databases are increasingly being used by the scientific community at large. Patients have also started to use the Internet as a source of information on their illnesses, and look in the web for a second opinion. This paper shows the advantages derived for the patients from using the Internet as well as the risks involved from a poorly understood, even not scientifically validated information. The Urology Associations themselves should take responsibility of the web sites in a unambiguous way, by including evidence-based medicine, offering assistance to those patients who want to compare their specialist's opinion with that obtainable in the Internet, and with the doctors themselves directing those who show a real interest to the most suitable web sites.

In this article the authors formulates basic types of English abstract and discuss frequent problems in the writing of the English abstracts carried in Chinese medical journals.
