A combination of cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisolone (CHOP) has been a standard therapy for histologically aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphomas for over 20 years, but several newer regimens, referred to as second or third generation, have been reported to give improved results in single-centre studies. Positive evidence from randomised trials has been lacking, and the British National Lymphoma Investigation therefore commenced a randomised comparison of CHOP vs a third-generation regimen, PACEBOM, in November 1987. A total of 459 eligible patients were entered into the trial: 226 in the CHOP arm and 233 in the PACEBOM arm. Overall, there was no significant difference in outcome between the two arms of the trial. In patients with stage IV disease there was an apparent improvement in survival for those treated with PACEBOM, but considerable caution must be exercised with such subgroup analysis.

In this study, we examined the prevalence of Salmonella and coliform bacteria on shrimp aquaculture farms to develop guidelines or preventative measures for reducing Salmonella and fecal contamination on products harvested from these farms. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, in conjunction with foreign government regulatory agencies, the aquaculture industry, and academia affiliates, analyzed 1,234 samples from 103 shrimp aquaculture farms representing six countries between July 2001 and June 2003 for fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella. A significant relationship was found (P = 0.0342) between the log number of fecal bacteria and the probability that any given sample would contain Salmonella. The likelihood of any given sample containing Salmonella was increased by 1.2 times with each 10-fold increase in either fecal coliform or E. coli concentration. The statistical relationship between Salmonella concentration and that of both fecal coliforms and E. coli was highest in grow-out pond water (P = 0.0042 for fecal coliforms and P = 0.0021 for E. coli). The likelihood of finding Salmonella in grow-out pond water increased 2.7 times with each log unit increase in fecal coliform concentration and 3.0 times with each log unit increase in E. coli concentration. Salmonella is not part of the natural flora of the shrimp culture environment nor is it inherently present in shrimp grow-out ponds. The occurrence of Salmonella bacteria in shrimp from aquaculture operations is related to the concentration of fecal bacteria in the source and grow-out pond water.

It is unclear whether the outcome in adolescents with Hodgkin's lymphoma is as good as that in children and there are no prospective randomized trials comparing regimes used in children and adults in this setting. We have therefore performed an analysis of 210 adolescent patients diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma between 1970-1997 and registered on the database held by the British National Lymphoma Investigation. Patients were treated according to adult regimens current at the time of their diagnosis. The complete response rate recorded in 209 patients was 76%. This was highly dependent on disease stage being 95% in patients with localized disease but 63% in those with advanced disease. The 5 year event free survival for the whole cohort was 50% falling to 41% at 20 years with overall survival of 81% falling to 68% at 5 and 20 years respectively. There is no significant difference in the 3 decades pertaining to this analysis. Of the 62 deaths in this cohort, 70% were due to Hodgkin's lymphoma but of the 13 deaths occurring beyond 10 years, only 3 were due to Hodgkin's lymphoma, the reminder being attributable to the late effects of therapy. Results from paediatric groups have been much more encouraging than those presented from this cohort. It seems the use of risk-adjusted combined modality therapy with minimization of radiation fields and doses and reduction of anthracycline and alkylator exposure has been successful in children and should be used in adolescents.

Dacron velour and knit prostheses were compared with respect to long-term patency when used as canine aortic implants. These grafts were rated, according to the average numerical value of six equally weighted criteria, in decreasing order of performance: velour I, velour II, circular knit III, velour IV, circular knit V, warp-knit VI, warp-knit VII and VIII, warp-knit IX and warp-knit X. In general, compacting and crimping methods using halogenated hydrocarbons produced the least successful grafts. Grafts of identical brand but compacted and crimped by different methods exhibited different patencies. No true healing of any of the grafts was observed. Layered deposits of inner fibrous capsule were formed at rates and thicknesses c a acteristic for each type of graft employed. A functioning Dacron femoral-popliteal bypass removed from a human after 9 months exhibited inner and outer fibrous capsules similar to those from canine implants.

1. 1. The major neutral lipid classes of Himasthla quissetensis rediae are sterols, free fatty acids, triglycerides and sterol esters. 2. 2. Sixteen fatty acid components of these classes have been resolved using gas-liquid chromatography. The major fatty acid in the sterol ester class is C 20:1 , in the triglyceride class is C 18:1 and in the free fatty acid class is C 16:0 . 3. 3. The fatty acid composition of the triglyceride class varies while the composition of the free fatty acid fraction shows a decrease in the relative proportions of C 18:1 and shorte chain fatty acids following in vitro starvation. The relative fatty acid composition of the sterol ester class shows no change after starvation.

Histological examination of tissues from the legs of tanner crabs, Chionoecetes bairdi, infected with black mat fungus, Trichomaris invadens, showed that hyphae penetrated the cuticle of the crab, extensively invaded the epidermis, and extended into the muscle tissue.
