We report a case of a 40-year-old Japanese woman with a benign tongue tumor diagnosed as osseous choristoma of the tongue. Resection of the tongue tumor was performed under general anesthesia. The gross examination of the resected specimen showed a bone-like mass measuring 5 × 5 × 3 mm, surrounded by soft tissue. Based on the findings, a histopathological diagnosis of osseous choristoma was established. There was no evidence of tumor recurrence or distant metastasis during the 3-year follow-up.

We present the case of a 3-year-old male child with an epibulbar bone choristoma. The patient presented with a hard consistency subconjunctival mass of 8×10mm in the superior-temporal quadrant of his right eye along with vascularisation and a long cilium of approximately 8 to 10mm that touched the corneal surface. The histopathology study showed the presence of trabeculae of mature, compact bone surrounded by fibrous tissue, as well as Havers channels with concentric rings of laminar bone without bone marrow, and with normal osteocytes which defined the diagnosis of epibulbar bone choristoma. Osseous choristoma is the rarest type of the ocular choristoma and should be considered as a differential diagnosis among paediatric epibulbar tumours.

Choristoma is described as the growth of normal tissue in an unusual location. Intraoral choristoma may be comprised of various tissue types such as cartilage, bone, gastric mucosa and, even glial tissue. Osseous choristoma is a rare, benign normal bony tissue in an abnormal location, commonly over the dorsum of the tongue though cases at maxillofacial region have been reported. This entity should be kept in mind because it can be confused with other tumor and tumor-like lesions of the tongue. We report a case of lingual osseous choristoma along with discussion regarding its epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, and treatment.

Osseous choristoma is an uncommon benign lesion characterized by the presence of ectopic mature bone within soft tissue. In most cases, these lesions occur on the dorsum of the tongue in patients in their third and fourth decades of life. This article describes a case of lingual osseous choristoma in a pediatric patient. An eleven-year-old girl with a lingual mass was referred to our hospital from a dental clinic. Total excisional biopsy and histological examination were performed, and osseous choristoma was diagnosed. The postoperative course was uneventful with no signs of recurrence during the 12 months after surgery. Moreover, a literature review focusing on pediatric cases with lingual osseous choristoma was performed to know the etiology, clinicopathological characteristics, and course of treatment of the lesion.

On palpation the lesion was stony hard. Mobility of the tongue was normal.A wide local excision was done under general anesthesia and the histopathology report was a Osseous choristoma. She came for follow up a month after the procedure and there was no evidence of any recurrence.Objective: To report a rare case of Osseous choristoma of the tongueMethod: - Result: -Conclusion: Lingual Osseous choristoma is a rare benign oral lesion. Osteomas are rare benign bony tumors located in the tongue area. In most cases, patients presenting with a lingual osteoma are asymptomatic but may complain of the sensation of having a foreign body. Fewer than 100 cases of lingual osteoma have been reported worldwide. Here, we present 2 cases of tongue base osteoma that were treated with excision under a laryngoscope.

Lingual osseous choristoma is a rare benign tumor consisting of normal matured bone tissue. It was first reported in 1913, and less than 100 cases of lingual osseous choristomas, mainly in their twenties and thirties, have been reported in the English literature until now. Here, we report an additional case of lingual osseous choristoma, in an elderly patient, that was incidentally removed by coughing and cured without additional interventions. An 89-year-old male patient was referred to our department for an evaluation of chronic cough. When we examined his oral cavity and pharynx, he expectorated a 10 -mm mass which was histologically diagnosed as an osseous choristoma. We confirmed the well-defined, rounded, high-density mass with a tiny pedicle on the base of the tongue in previous cervical spine CT images. No signs of recurrence were found during the 15-month follow-up examination. Our case serves as a reminder of this rare entity in the diagnosis of tongue masses of the elderly.

To present the pre-, per- and postoperative features of epibulbar osseous choristoma. Case description including intraoperative imaging and histopathology. A 32-year-old male patient presented with a lesion on his right eye, suggestive of an epibulbar dermolipoma. Excision of bony lesion was performed and revealed epibulbar osseous choristoma. Epibulbar osseous choristoma is a rare and benign condition which can present with features similar to dermolipoma.

A 37-year-old male was found to have a firm yellowy-white palpable mass embedded within the conjunctival surface of the tarsal plate of the left upper eyelid. This was asymptomatic and noted on a routine examination for contralateral epiphora. An excisional biopsy was performed and a "rock-like nodule" was removed with histopathology confirming the presence of mature bone. While the literature describes these lesions located in other aspects of the orbit, this is the first described case of an epibulbar osseous choristoma located in the tarsal plate of the upper eyelid.

Osseous choristoma is a rare, benign lesion of the oral cavity. This report presents a case of osseous choristoma in the submental region of a 30-year-old female subject. Her chief complaint was a painless swelling in the submental region. Panoramic radiography showed a well-defined, round, radiopaque lesion near the inferior border of the left mental region. The lesion was diagnosed as an osseous choristoma based on the histopathological examination of the surgical specimen. This paper is an attempt to bring forward a unique occurrence of osseous choristoma, which would further help the medical fraternity in improvising their knowledge, diagnosis, and treatment of this entity.

We present a case of a 15-year-old girl with an epibulbar osseous choristoma. The patient presented with a 3×3 mm, whitish, firm subconjunctival mass in the superotemporal quadrant of her right eye with vascularization. She underwent excision biopsy of the mass under topical anesthesia. The pathologic sections were consistent with a well-circumscribed osseous tissue without atypia. Osseous choristoma is one of the rare types of ocular choristoma to be considered in the differential diagnosis of pediatric epibulbar tumors.

Purpose To present the case of a 12-year-old female with an epibulbar osseous choristoma. Observations The patient presented with right-sided conjunctival mass, which caused her discomfort. Slit lamp examination revealed a 5×5-mm, firm nodule in the superotemporal quadrant of the bulbar conjunctiva. The nodule had feeder vessels, adhered firmly to the sclera, and lacked signs of malignancy. The patient underwent excisional biopsy under general anesthesia. During this procedure, great care was taken to avoid perforation of the globe. The pathologic sections were significant for well-circumscribed osseous tissue without atypia. Conclusions and importance We describe diagnosis and successful surgical management of osseous choristoma the rarest subtype of ocular choristoma. With only 65 cases reported since mid-19th century, the condition remains poorly described. This report provides additional information on diagnosis and treatment of this rare condition.

Osseous choristomas are rare benign lesions, characterized by ectopic bone formation in the soft tissue. It affects women, occurs preferentially in the tongue, presenting as a solid nodule, sessile or pediculate, smooth with asymptomatic surface. Microscopically it shows the presence of lamellar bone. Treatment is surgical excision, with no recurrence expected. A clinical case of osseous choristoma will be reported, including its main characteristics and the importance of its knowledge in the clinical routine. A 26-year-old female patient attended the stomatology service because of an asymptomatic nodule in her tongue perceived during oral hygiene with a 3-week course. In the intraoral clinical examination, the presence of a normochromic pedicled nodule was observed in the posterior tongue’s dorsum. Excisional biopsy was performed, and the report was of osseous choristoma. Because of the location and appearance of this lesion, it is important that the clinician knows its characteristics and possible differential diagnoses.

A 72-year-old female patient attended the dental office with a complaint of tongue lesion and a time course of 3 months. At the physical examination, a nodular lesion was found, located on the back of the tongue, with mucosa-like staining, firm consistency, sessile implantation, measuring approximately 1.5 cm. Considering the clinical findings, the diagnostic hypothesis was granular cell tumor, and the excisional biopsy performed. The histopathological examination showed regions of cartilaginous matrix and newly deposited bone matrix without cellular alterations and the diagnosis of choristoma was established. The choristoma is a growth like a tumor, exhibiting microscopically normal tissue in an abnormal location. They are benign and rare lesions, showing great predilection for the tongue, mainly posterior region in 85% of the cases. In 70% of cases of oral choristoma the patients are female.

A healthy 18-year-old girl presented with a superotemporal epibulbar mass that was present since birth. Computed tomography revealed a cystic mass with fat-like low-density and a central oval-shaped mass that was isodense to the bone in the superotemporal region of the globe. Histopathology of the excised tumour revealed osseous choristoma and dermolipoma. Our review of literature yielded nine reported cases of epibulbar osseous choristoma within a dermolipoma and we reviewed these cases.

Materials and methods A retrospective cohort study of cases with tissue diagnosis of epibulbar choristoma in 2 centers presenting during the period: 2000–2016 with focus on cases of complex and osseous choristoma. Demographic and clinical data were collected by the resident from medical records. The histopathological slides were reviewed by 2 pathologists and cases of complex and osseous choristoma were analyzed by biostatical staff. Results 120 epibulbar choristomas were identified. 13/120 patients (10.8%) with complex choristoma and 2/120 patients (1.7%) with osseous choristoma. 15 cases were further analyzed: 7 were males and 8 were females. Mean age at presentation was 7.6 year. Commonest location was temporal in 66.6%. The presence of smooth muscle component was associated with a larger size choristoma (p = 0.042). 73.3% had other ophthalmic manifestations (mostly eyelid anomalies) while 9 systemic associations (mostly Goldenhar's syndrome) were found in 8/13 cases of complex choristoma. Conclusion Epibulbar complex and osseous choristomas are rare. Histopathologically, the presence of smooth muscle significantly correlates with the lesion size. Complex choristoma is more likely to be associated with systemic manifestations. Further genetic studies for this condition are recommended., Highlights • Choristomas are congenital tumors that may affect the epibulbar area. • They arise from ectopic pluripotent cells differentiating into simple or complex choristoma. • We present our cases to highlight interesting ophthalmic and/or systemic associations. • This might open the door for future molecular genetic testing. • Significant association is found between smooth muscle component and larger size choristoma.

An osseous choristoma is a rare benign lesion consisting of normal bone tissue; it is seen in abnormal locations. It is most often seen in the posterior 1/3 of the tongue in the head. Its etiopatogenesis is controversial, and till date, less than 100 cases have been reported in the literature. Although a lingual osseous choristoma is asymptomatic, in some patients, symptoms such as swelling sensation in the throat, globus pharyngeus, dysphagia, retching, nausea, and sore throat have been reported. In this article, a 41-year-old female patient admitted to our clinic with throat pain and globus pharyngeus who underwent an excision from the region of radix lingua and the result of histopathological examination was reported as “osseous choristoma” was presented and related literature is reviewed.

Osseous choristoma of soft tissue in the oral cavity is rare. The choristoma is a tumor-like mass of normal cells in an abnormal location. In this report, a case of osseous choristoma of the palate in a 37-year-old male patient was reported. Approximately 6 × 5 mm pedunculated healthy colored and hard mass was observed in the median palate. The mass was surgically removed. Microscopic examination of the hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections of the mass revealed that a dense lamellar bone nodule was surrounded by fibrous connective tissue under the squamous epithelium. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that the mass was negative for S-100 protein, cytokeratin, and epithelial membrane antigens. According to these findings, the final pathologic diagnosis confirmed that the mass was an osseous choristoma.

Osseous lesions of the tongue, also referred to as osseous choristomas, are benign growths of bony tissue. These lesions are not true neoplasms but rather represent growth of normal tissue at an abnormal location. Clinically, they appear as exophytic masses of the tongue, and they are treated by surgical excision. Lingual osseous choristomas are rare entities, with only 71 reported cases in the literature. We present the case of a lingual osseous choristoma of the tongue base in a 21-year-old female. Of the cases of lingual osseous choristoma reported in the literature, ours is only the fifth case to involve this location.

Background Osseous choristoma is a very rare, benign lesion in the maxillofacial region. It appears as a benign mass of normally matured bony tissue covered by the normal epithelium of the tongue. It is usually seen in front of the foramen cecum of the tongue. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice with an excellent prognosis and there have been very few cases of recurrence. Case presentation Here we present two cases of osseous choristoma on the dorsum of the tongue. Case 1 was a 15-year-old Japanese girl who presented with a painless but gradually growing swelling on the dorsum of her tongue approximately 1 year before her admission. Case 2 was a 21-year-old Japanese woman with a complaint of pain in the lower left, posterior side of her mouth. Histological findings showed that both lesions were composed of well-organized, mature, compact bone beneath the oral mucosal membrane. Subsequent to simple surgical excision, no recurrence of the lesions was observed after the follow-up period. Previous literatures have proposed both malformation and trauma hypotheses as the etiopathologies of osseous choristoma. However, the histopathological findings of the two cases in the present study do not support the trauma hypothesis. Conclusions Although osseous choristoma is clinically a benign condition, the underlying histopathological processes are important. The outcome of aberrant formation of calcified tissue in the vicinity of vital structures such as nerves and blood vessels may be of clinical significance.

Purpose To describe the clinical features and histopathology of epibulbar osseous choristoma in a series of patients. Methods Noncomparative case series with chart review of 8 patients. Results At presentation, the mean age of the patients was 19 years (median, 19 years; range, 0.8-38 years), with 6 women and 2 men (6 Caucasian, 1 Hispanic, and 1 African American). There were no related systemic syndromes, and visual acuity was unaffected in all cases. The choristoma was superotemporal (n = 8, 100%), with epicenter located in the fornix (n = 8, 100%), deep to Tenon fascia (n = 8, 100%), and of yellow (n = 2, 25%), white (n = 2, 25%), or pink (n = 4, 50%) color. The mean basal dimension was 9 mm (median, 10 mm; range, 3.5-14 mm), and mean thickness was 4 mm (median, 4 mm; range, 2-5 mm). Four cases were managed with observation and 4 with surgical excision, revealing tumor base adherent to the episclera (n = 2, 50%) or loose within Tenon fascia (n = 2, 50%). There were no cases to demonstrate intrascleral involvement, growth, or recurrence. Conclusions Epibulbar osseous choristoma is a congenital lesion of mature bone located superotemporally in the fornix at the level of Tenon fascia or episclera in young patients.

Osseous choristoma is a rare, benign lesion that presents at an abnormal location as a tumor-like mass comprising mature bone tissue. We report the case of a 50-year-old man who developed osseous choristoma in the submandibular legion. The patient was referred to our clinic in May 2011 with a 4-year history of a progressively growing tumor-like swelling in the submandibular region. The lesion was a hard, mobile, well-circumscribed, globular mass. Computed tomography revealed a heterogeneous high-density mass on the left side of the submandibular region. There was no bony connection to the mandible. Bone scanning revealed an increased uptake of 99mTc labeled hydroxymethylene diphosphonate by the lesion. The tumor was resected via an extraoral approach under general anesthesia. During surgery, it was observed that the tumor was not closely adherent to adjacent structures such as muscles or the submandibular salivary gland. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen revealed features indicative of osseous choristoma. The postoperative course was uneventful and there has been no evidence of recurrence till date.

A choristoma is a benign tumour-like growth consisting of normal tissue in an abnormal site. Seven cases of mixed osseous and cartilaginous choristoma of the tongue have been reported in the literature, only one on the anterior tongue. Here we review the literature regarding osseous and cartilaginous choristomas and report only the second case of mixed osseous choristoma to occur on the anterior dorsal tongue.

Osseous choristoma is a rare, benign lesion which usually develops in the tongue adjacent to the foramen caecum. This report presents a case occurring in the palatal region, as well as a review of the literature. A differential diagnosis of this condition from other bone-forming lesions of the soft tissue is also discussed.

We report a case of osseous choristoma on the tongue radix. A 25-year-old woman with Turner syndrome was seen for a 10-year-old asymptomatic tongue tumor. Assuming it to be benign, we totally resected the tumor through an oral approach under general anesthesia. The pathological diagnosis was osteoma of the tongue, called osseous choristoma. She had undergone estrogen and progestogen treatment for Turner syndrome. We concluded that estrogen treatmenat triggered osseous choristoma due to accelerated new bone formation.

This report presents a case of osseous choristoma in the submandibular region of a 33-year-old female. Her chief complaint was painless swelling in the submandibular region. Panoramic radiography showed a well-defined, round, radiopaque lesion near the inferior border of the right mandibular angle. Coronal and sagittal tomographic images indicated a high-density area in the right submandibular region with no bony connection. The lesion was diagnosed as an osseous choristoma based on histopathological examination of the surgical specimen. A 1-year follow-up period was uneventful.

Epibulbar osseous choristomas typically present, in the young, as a supero-temporal subconjunctival nodule and radiographic imaging often shows a densely radio-opaque fleck on the sclera--this often being misinterpreted as a parabulbar foreign body. Four illustrative cases are presented.

This case report is the third ever reported of a recurrent intraoral osseous choristoma. The lesion had manifested twice in the left mandibular buccal vestibule of a 63-year-old Caucasian female. The patient was treated with wide local excision on both occasions. We believe that the lesions may have arisen as a result of previous trauma, although the exact etiology of the lesions is unknown. Interestingly, the recurrent lesion contained satellite nodules of bone, which suggests that the osseous choristoma may recur yet again.

Summary Choristomas are defined as proliferations of histologically normal tissue located in an abnormal position. Osseous choristomas of oral soft tissue are rare lesions, especially in children, occurring most frequently in the tongue, and less commonly in other sites such as buccal mucosa, palate and alveolar mucosa. It has been suggested that osseous choristomas have developmental or traumatic origins. Definite diagnosis can only be determined after histologic examination, whereupon the treatment of choice is surgical excision. Here we present, what is to our knowledge, a second case of buccal osseous choristoma in a pediatric patient, along with a brief review of the current, pertinent literature.

Choristoma of the eye are common epibulbar and ocular tumours in children, but osseous choristoma of the eye are very rare with few case reports being published in literature. We report one such case which presented in a 14 year female child who had small tiny nodule in the left eye present since birth with gradual increase in size. Excision biopsy was done. Histologically, nodule was composed of mature lamellated bone with a surrounding connective tissue.

El osteoma lingual (coristoma oseo lingual) es una alteracion del desarrollo poco comun, con menos de 100 casos reportados mundialmente. La localizacion mas frecuente de esta lesion es la cara dorsal de la lengua. Su etiologia no es completamente clara. Debido a su escasa incidencia, reportamos un nuevo caso, en una paciente de sexo femenino de 12 anos de edad.
