The concept Awareness of Age-Related Change (AARC) is defined as a person’s awareness that their behavior, level of physical, cognitive and social performance, and ways of experiencing life have changed as a consequence of having grown older, and not because of disease. Objective: A psychometric study investigating evidence of construct validity and internal consistency of the Portuguese version of the AARC Short Scale was carried out. Method: A convenience sample of 387 individuals aged≥60 years with no deficit suggestive of dementia were recruited at venues frequented by older persons and at households. Participants answered the Portuguese version of the scale, along with questionnaires collecting sociodemographic and frailty variables and self-rated health based on personal criteria and relative to peers. Results: Exploratory and confirmatory factorial analyses derived a structure with two orthogonal factors representing the latent variables gains and losses, invariant for age group, thus replicating the original scale. The factors explained a large proportion of item variability (58.6 to 51.8%) and exhibited high loadings (0.886 to 0.432) and good communality [0.787 for item 4 (better sense of what is important) and 0.369 for item 6 (less energy)]. The hypotheses of covariance between the new instrument and the parallel measures of frailty and self-rated health were confirmed. The levels of internal consistency were high (α>0.700). Conclusion: Evidence confirmed the factor and convergent (construct) validity and internal consistency of the new scale in Portuguese. RESUMO. O reconhecimento de ganhos e perdas associados ao envelhecimento desempenha papel regulador em relação ao self e às atitudes sociais quanto à velhice. Objetivo: Investigar indicadores de validade de construto, consistência interna e validade convergente da Awareness of Age-Related Change Short Scale (AARC) traduzida para o português. Método: Um total de 387 indivíduos de 60 anos ou mais compuseram amostra de conveniência que respondeu à versão do estudo AARC Short Scale em português, e a medidas de fragilidade, autoavaliação de saúde e caracterização sociodemográfica. As explorações de validade de construto foram mediadas por análises fatoriais exploratórias (com rotação Varimax e oblíqua/Promax), e confirmatórias (método de equações estruturais para variáveis latentes); as de consistência interna, pelo teste de Cronbach e as de validade convergente, pelas correlações entre os itens da escala, fragilidade e saúde autorreferida. Resultados: A estrutura de dois fatores, ganhos e perdas, as cargas e a comunalidade dos itens da escala em português foram altas e similares nas análises fatoriais exploratórias e confirmatórias, e similares à versão original. Foi rejeitada a hipótese de correlação entre os fatores e confirmada a de invariância do construto às idades; consistência interna da escala e dos fatores indicada por índices α>0,700; fragilidade e saúde autorreferida correlacionaram-se negativamente com a pontuação na escala e em ganhos, e positivamente em perdas. Conclusões: Foram observadas evidências de validade de construto, consistência interna e validade convergente da versão do AARC Short Scale em português, para aplicação em amostras com características similares às desse estudo.

Introduction: Self-rated health is a multidimensional health indicator and a predictor of adverse events in old age. Answers to this assessment are influenced by social, cultural and personality factors.Aim: Exploring common and distinctive characteristics of Brazilian and Portuguese older adults aged 70 and over regarding positive self-rated health according to sociodemographic variables, to functional capacity, to independent performance of basic activities of daily living and to neuroticism, as well as analyzing associations between positive self-rated health and these variables.Methods: The present paper is a comparative and cross-sectional study based on secondary data contained in the databases of the FIBRA (Frailty in Brazilian Older Adults) follow-up study, with 418 Brazilian older adults, and of the DIA (From Disability to Activity: The Challenge of Aging) study, with 380 Portuguese older adults. Both samples had higher percentages of women: 68.4% for Portugal and 69.9% for Brazil. The Brazilian sample had a higher average age (80.31 ± 4.67) than the Portuguese sample (76.80 ± 5.28).Results: The Portuguese older adults had better overall cognition scores, higher handgrip strength and higher neuroticism values than the Brazilian older adults. In the simple and multiple logistic regression analyses, it was found that among Brazilian older adults, subjects with higher scores in the MMSE (OR 1.16; 95% CI 1.08–1.24), regardless of ADL performance (OR 2.13; 95% CI 1.31–3.47) and with scores 24–29 (OR 1.92; 95% CI 1.07–3.43) or 11–23 (OR 2.09; 95% CI 1.15–3.79) in neuroticism were more likely to assess their health as very good/good. On the other hand, the Portuguese older adults with intermediate 24–9 (OR 2.38; 95% CI 1.31–4.33) or low 11–23 (OR 5.31; 95% CI 2.69–10.45) scores in neuroticism were more likely to evaluate their health as very good/good.Conclusion: Based on the findings of the present study and on the existing literature, it may be said that it is possible for people to age while keeping a positive perception of their own health, even in advanced old age; comparisons between the above-mentioned countries, however, point to the need for investments in healthcare systems so that older adults may enjoy greater physical independence and improved mental health.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive and degenerative condition affecting several cognitive areas, with a decline in functional abilities and behavioral changes. Objective: To investigate the association between neuropsychiatric symptoms in older adults with AD and caregiver burden and depression. Methods: A total of 134 family caregivers of older people diagnosed with AD answered a questionnaire with sociodemographic data and questions concerning the care context, neuropsychiatric symptoms, caregiver burden, and depressive symptoms. Results: Results revealed that 95% of older adults had at least one neuropsychiatric symptom, with the most common being: apathy, anxiety, and depression. Among the 12 neuropsychiatric symptoms investigated, 10 were significantly associated with caregiver burden, while 8 showed significant correlations with depressive symptoms. Conclusions: Neuropsychiatric symptoms were related to caregiver burden and depressive symptoms. In addition to the older adult with AD, the caregiver should receive care and guidance from the health team to continue performing quality work. RESUMO. A doença de Alzheimer (DA) é progressiva e degenerativa, afetando diversas áreas cognitivas com declínio nas habilidades funcionais e alterações comportamentais. Objetivo: Investigar a associação entre presença de sintomas neuropsiquiátricos apresentados por idosos com doença de Alzheimer e sobrecarga, e depressão dos cuidadores. Métodos: Um total de 134 cuidadores familiares de idosos com diagnóstico da doença de Alzheimer responderam a um questionário com dados sociodemográficos e questões referentes ao contexto de cuidado, sintomas neuropsiquiátricos, sobrecarga e depressão do cuidador. Resultados: Os resultados revelaram que 95% dos idosos apresentaram pelo menos um sintoma neuropsiquiátrico. A apatia, a ansiedade e a depressão foram os sintomas neuropsiquiátricos mais frequentes nos idosos. Dos 12 sintomas neuropsiquiátricos investigados, 10 associaram-se significativamente à sobrecarga do cuidador (exceto ansiedade e alteração alimentar), e oito sintomas neuropsiquiátricos apresentaram correlações significativas com os sintomas de depressão. Conclusão: A presença de determinados sintomas neuropsiquiátricos está relacionada com a sobrecarga e com sintomas de depressão apresentados pelos cuidadores. Além do idoso com doença de Alzheimer, o cuidador deve receber cuidados e orientação da equipe de saúde para que possa continuar desempenhando sua função com qualidade.

Background: The link between sarcopenia and cognitive impairment has not yet been thoroughly evaluated, especially among older adults. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between probable sarcopenia and cognitive impairment among community-dwelling older adults in two Brazilian cities. Methods: Probable sarcopenia was assessed using the EWGSOP2 (2018) criteria. Thus, participants were classified as probably having sarcopenia if they had SARC-F (Strength, Assistance in walking, Rise from a chair, Climb stairs and Falls) ≥4 points and low grip strength. Cognitive function was evaluated through the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), verbal fluency (VF) and clock drawing test (CDT). Results: In a sample of 529 older adults (mean age 80.8±4.9 years; mean education 4.2±3.67 years; 70.1% women), 27.3% of the participants had SARC-F≥4, 38.3% had low grip strength and 13.6% were classified as probable sarcopenia cases. After adjusting for possible confounders (age, sex, education, depression, diabetes, hypertension, leisure-time physical activity and obesity), probable sarcopenia was found to be associated with impairment in the MMSE (OR 2.52; 95%CI 1.42‒4.47; p=0.002) and in VF (OR 2.17; 95%CI 1.17‒4.01; p=0.014). Low grip strength was found to be associated with impairment in the MMSE (OR 1.83; 95%CI 1.18‒2.82; p=0.006) and in the CDT (OR 1.79; 95%CI 1.18‒2.73; p=0.006). SARC-F scores were found to be associated with impairment in the MMSE (OR 1.90; 95%CI 1.18‒3.06; p=0.008). Conclusion: The results suggested that probable sarcopenia and its components present a significant association with cognitive deficits among community-dwelling older adults. Future longitudinal studies will further explore the causal relationship. Objetivo: Avaliar a relação entre sarcopenia provável e comprometimento cognitivo entre idosos residentes na comunidade em duas cidades brasileiras. Métodos: A sarcopenia provável foi avaliada pelo critério EWGSOP2 (2018), portanto, os participantes foram classificados como tendo sarcopenia provável se tivessem SARC-F (em inglês, Strength, Assistance in walking, Rise from a chair, Climb stairs and Falls) ≥4 pontos e baixa força de preensão manual. A função cognitiva foi avaliada através do Miniexame do Estado Mental (MEEM), fluência verbal (FV) e teste do desenho do relógio (TDR). Resultados: Em uma amostra de 529 idosos (idade média 80,8±4,9 anos; escolaridade média 4,2 (±3,67) anos; 70,1% de mulheres), 27,3% dos participantes apresentaram SARC-F≥4, 38,3% apresentaram baixa força de preensão manual e 13,6% foram classificados com sarcopenia provável. Após o ajuste para possíveis fatores de confusão (idade, sexo, educação, depressão, diabetes, hipertensão, atividade física no lazer e obesidade), a sarcopenia provável foi associada ao comprometimento no MEEM (OR 2,52; IC95% 1,42‒4,47; p=0,002) e na FV (OR 2,17; IC95%=1,17‒4,01; p=0,014); a baixa força de preensão foi associada a comprometimento no MEEM (OR 1,83; IC95% 1,18‒2,82; p=0,006) e no TDR (OR 1,79; IC95% 1,18‒2,73; p=0,006); e os escores na SARC-F foram associados ao comprometimento no MEEM (OR 1,90; IC95% 1,18‒3,06; p=0,008). Futuros estudos longitudinais explorarão a relação causal.

AIM To determine the direct and indirect relationships of sociodemographic, emotional and behavioral characteristics of family caregivers of Alzheimer's disease patients who have neuropsychiatric symptoms. METHODS A total of 134 family caregivers answered a questionnaire with sociodemographic data, and questions regarding the context of care, Neuropsychiatric Inventory, Zarit Burden Interview, Dementia Management Strategies Scale and the Beck Depression Inventory. A path analysis was used to model the direct and indirect relationships among the selected variables. RESULTS Being a female caregiver, presenting high levels of burden, a moderate degree of depressive symptoms, distress (Neuropsychiatric Inventory total distress score), active management strategies and criticism management strategies were significantly associated with the total score of neuropsychiatric symptoms. The caregiver burden and use of criticism management strategies were directly related to neuropsychiatric symptoms in older adults with Alzheimer's disease. The use of active management strategies and depressive symptoms of caregivers had indirect relationships with neuropsychiatric symptoms through caregiver burden. CONCLUSIONS Overburdened caregivers and the use of dysfunctional management strategies are associated with a greater presence of neuropsychiatric symptoms in Alzheimer's disease patients. These aspects should be considered when developing interventions for caregivers to manage neuropsychiatric symptoms and overall treatment of patients with dementia. This study aims to investigate the association between management and communication strategies and the presence of neuropsychiatric symptoms presented by elderly people with Alzheimer’s disease. One hundred and thirty-four family caregivers answered a questionnaire with socio-demographic data and questions regarding the care context, the Small Communication Strategies Scale, the Dementia Management Strategy Scale, and the Neuropsychiatric Inventory. Caregivers used the criticism management strategy more when the elderly presented hallucination, agitation, depression, anxiety, irritability, nighttime behavior, and appetite abnormalities. The encouragement strategy was more significantly used only in the presence of euphoria/elation. The caregivers who used the most active management strategy were those who cared for the elderly with delirium, hallucination, agitation, depression, anxiety, irritability, and appetite and eating abnormalities. The use of communication strategies did not differ between groups with or without neuropsychiatric symptoms. It is concluded that criticism management and active management strategies are strongly associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms. The results of this study may be useful for planning treatment interventions that aim to modify the use of management strategies used by caregivers.

Objective: to compare the life satisfaction of family caregivers, taking into account their gender, age, time since starting care, health, religion, perceived burden and quality of life, and the level of physical and cognitive dependence of the elderly person receiving care, and to investigate the associations between these variables and low life satisfaction. Methods: a total of 148 caregivers in Indaiatuba and Campinas, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, selected using the convenience method, were interviewed at home, in private medical clinics and outpatient units, using questionnaires about the sociodemographic characteristics, health conditions, time since starting care, scales of life satisfaction, religiosity, perceived burden and quality of life of the caregiver, and the physical and mental health of the elderly person receiving care. Descriptive, Multivariate and Univariate Logistic Regression analysis were used. Results: caregivers who exhibited low life satisfaction included more frail individuals, with three or more chronic diseases and depression, greater perceived burden and lower self-fulfillment and pleasure, and control and autonomy, scores, which are factors of the Perceived Quality of Life Scale. Elderly caregivers who scored low in self-fulfillment factor and pleasure (OR=101.29; CI=28.68 - 357.73) and who scored high in perceived burden (OR=5.89, CI=2.13 to 16.24) had a greater chance of having low life satisfaction scores. Conclusions: The assessment of caregivers of their satisfaction with life is more influenced by subjective than objective variables, and low satisfaction seems to be strongly associated with poor quality of life, high burden, and caregiver frailty. Resumo Objetivos: Comparar a satisfação com a vida de cuidadores familiares considerando seu gênero, idade, tempo transcorrido desde o início do cuidado, condições de saúde, religiosidade, sobrecarga percebida e qualidade de vida, nível de dependência física e cognitiva dos idosos receptores de cuidados e investigar associações entre essas variáveis e baixa satisfação com a vida. Métodos: Amostra de conveniência com 148 cuidadores de Indaiatuba e Campinas, SP, Brasil, submetida a entrevistas realizadas em domicílios, consultórios médicos privados e ambulatórios com apoio de questionários sobre condições sociodemográficas e de saúde do cuidador, tempo de cuidado, escalas de satisfação com a vida, religiosidade, sobrecarga percebida e qualidade de vida e condições de saúde física e mental do idoso cuidado. As análises utilizadas foram Descritiva, Regressão Univariada e Multivariada. Resultados: Entre os cuidadores que pontuaram baixo em satisfação haviam mais idosos frágeis, com três ou mais doenças crônicas e depressão, maior sobrecarga percebida e menor pontuação em autorrealização e prazer e em controle e autonomia, fatores da escala de qualidade de vida percebida. Os cuidadores idosos com maior chance de pontuar para baixa satisfação com a vida foram os que pontuaram baixo no fator autorrealização e prazer (OR=101,29; IC=28,68 - 357,73) e que pontuaram alto em sobrecarga percebida (OR=5,89; IC=2,13 a 16,24). Conclusões: A avaliação do cuidador sobre sua satisfação com a vida é mais influenciada por variáveis subjetivas do que objetivas, sendo que a baixa satisfação parece estar fortemente associada à baixa qualidade de vida, alta sobrecarga e a fragilidade de cuidador.

RESUMO Objetivo Conduzir uma revisão sistemática de estudos que investigaram estratégias comunicativas utilizadas por cuidadores de idosos com demência, publicados entre 1995 e 2015. Métodos O levantamento de estudos foi feito usando as seguintes palavras-chave “comunicação e cuidador e demência” e “comunicação e cuidador e Alzheimer”, e os termos em inglês “elderspeak and dementia”, “caregiver’s talk and dementia”, “communication and caregiver and dementia” e “communicative and caregiver and Alzheimer”. Desta revisão sistemática, foram excluídos os artigos de intervenção e aqueles que não tinham descrito entre seus objetivos investigar estratégias comunicativas usadas por cuidadores de idosos com demência. Resultados Apenas 22 estudos preencheram os critérios de inclusão. Os estudos revisados mostraram que os cuidadores de idosos com demência utilizam estratégias comunicativas que são ineficazes (por exemplo, comunicação infantilizada; comunicação “controle” e complexa) e eficazes (usar frases simples; dar um comando por vez; realizar perguntas em que a opção de resposta é sim ou não, entre outras). Conclusão É importante avaliar as percepções e avaliações dos cuidadores acerca da eficácia da estratégia utilizada, para que depois sejam ensinadas habilidades de comunicação para cuidadores familiares e cuidadores formais. A comunicação bem-sucedida deve promover a participação dos idosos com demência, contribuindo para manutenção da autonomia e participação tanto dos cuidadores quanto das pessoas acometidas por esse quadro.

Objective: to investigate the relationships between the perceived quality of life of elderly people who care for other elderly people with neurological diseases (dementia and strokes) and the gender, age and caregiver burden, diagnosis, functional dependence, and cognitive status of the care recipient. Method: 75 caregivers aged over 60 years were interviewed using the Quality of Life Scale (CASP-19) and Zarit Burden Interview. The levels of physical vulnerability of the elderly were identified through the Lawton and Brody questionnaires and the Katz scale and the cognitive assessment of elderly care recipients was assessed with the Clinical Dementia Rating. The data were analyzed by chi-squared test (for comparison of categorical variables), Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis U tests (for comparison of continuous variables). To study the associations between variables, univariate logistic regression analysis was performed, followed by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: the age, gender of the caregiver, type of neurological condition, and physical and cognitive functioning of the care recipient did not statistically influence the quality of life of the caregiver. O estudo objetivou investigar a associação entre Atividades avançadas de vida diária (AAVD) e o desempenho cognitivo entre idosos participantes do estudo FIBRA em Ermelino Matarazzo, São Paulo. Foram investigados 302 idosos sem declínio cognitivo, classificados em muito ativos e pouco ativos nas AAVDs, e avaliados pelo Mini exame do estado mental (MEEM), bateria breve de rastreio cognitivo (BBRC), fluência verbal (FV), teste do desenho do relógio (TDR) e escala de depressão geriátrica (EDG). As AAVDs associaram-se ao desempenho no MEEM e no TDR, nas análises univariadas, mas esta associação perdeu significância no modelo multivariado. O desempenho, no MEEM, esteve associado à idade, escolaridade, sexo e número de sintomas depressivos. O escore, no TDR, associou-se à escolaridade. Conclui-se que a relação entre as AAVDs e o desempenho cognitivo parece ser modulada por variáveis sociodemográficas e por sintomas depressivos.

Communication with patients with dementia may be a difficult task for caregivers.The aim of this study was to produce a Brazilian transcultural adaptation of an instrument developed in Canada, called the Small Communication Strategies Scale, composed of 10 items constructed from 10 communicative strategies most recurrent in a literature survey.Drawing on understanding of the construction of the Small Communication Strategies Scale (SCSS), a Brazilian Portuguese version of the instrument was devised through the following steps: translation, back-translation and semantic-cultural adaptation by a specialized linguist in English-Portuguese translations and application of the comprehension test for the version produced in a group of caregivers of elderly individuals with dementia.The transcultural equivalence process was performed and two items of the SCSS needed adapting to the Brazilian context. After changes suggested by a specialized linguist, the final version was applied to 34 caregivers and the transcultural equivalence considered satisfactory.The Brazilian version of the instrument was successfully transculturally adapted for future validation and application in Brazil.A comunicação com pacientes com demência pode ser muito difícil para os cuidadores.Este estudo objetivou obter a adaptação transcultural de um instrumento desenvolvido no Canadá, denominado Small Communication Strategies Scale, composto por 10 itens que foi construído a partir de 10 estratégias comunicativas que mais apareciam em um levantamento bibliográfico.A partir da compreensão da construção daA equivalência transcultural foi realizada, e no teste de compreensibilidade apenas dois itens do SCSS precisaram ser adaptados para o contexto brasileiro: 2) lentamente e devagar – optou-se porA versão brasileira do instrumento foi adaptada transculturalmente com sucesso e está pronta para ser validada e aplicada no Brasil.

There are few studies on the qualitative variables derived from the animal category verbal fluency test (VF), especially with data originating from low-income samples of community-based studies.To compare elderly with and without hypertension (HTN) and diabetes mellitus (DM) regarding the total number of animals spoken, number of categories, groups and category switches on the VF test.We used the database of the FIBRA (Frailty in Brazilian Elderly) community-based study. The variables number of Categories, Groups and Category Switches were created for each participant. The total sample (n = 384) was divided into groups of elderly who reported having HTN, DM, both HTN and DM, or neither of these conditions.There were no significant differences between the groups with and without these chronic diseases for VF total score or for the qualitative variables.Among independent community-dwelling elderly, the qualitative variables derived from the VF animal category may not add information regarding the cognitive profile of elderly with chronic diseases. Total VF score and the qualitative variables Category, Group and Switching did not differentiate elderly with and without HTN and DM.Existem poucos estudos sobre as variáveis qualitativas decorrentes do teste de fluência verbal (FV) categoria animais, em especial com dados provenientes de amostra populacional de países com baixa renda.Comparar idosos com e sem hipertensão (HAS) e diabetes mellitus (DM) quanto ao número total de animais falados, número de categorias, grupos e trocas de categoria no teste de FV.Utilizou-se o banco de dados do estudo FIBRA (Fragilidade em Idosos Brasileiros) de base populacional em Ermelino Matarazzo. Foram criadas as variáveis Categoria, Grupo e Troca de Categoria para cada participante. A amostra total (n = 384) foi dividida entre aqueles idosos que relataram ter HAS, DM, ambas ou nenhuma destas condições.Não houve diferença significativa entre os grupos com e sem estas doenças crônicas para o escore total da FV nem para as variáveis qualitativas.Entre idosos independentes residentes na comunidade, as variáveis qualitativas derivadas da FV animais podem não adicionar informações sobre o perfil cognitivo de idosos com condições crônicas. O escore total da FV e as variáveis qualitativas Categoria, Grupo e Troca de Categoria não diferenciaram idosos com e sem HAS e DM.

To assess the relationship between the CHS frailty criteria (Fried et al., 2001) and cognitive performance. Cross sectional and population-based. Setting: Ermelino Matarazzo, a poor sub district of the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. 384 community dwelling older adults, 65 and older. Assessment of the CHS frailty criteria, the Brief Cognitive Screening Battery (memorization of 10 black and white pictures, verbal fluency animal category, and the Clock Drawing Test) and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Frail older adults performed significantly lower than non-frail and pre frail elderly in most cognitive variables. Grip strength and age were associated to MMSE performance, age was associated to delayed memory recall, gait speed was associated to verbal fluency and CDT performance, and education was associated to CDT performance. Being frail may be associated with cognitive decline, thus, gerontological assessments and interventions should consider that these forms of vulnerability may occur simultaneously.

Psychoeducational activities are a way of promoting help for caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's disease, representing a forum for knowledge sharing, and in which the primary focus is on psychological themes aimed at carers developing coping skills and strategies. Objective: The main objective of this study was to gauge perceptions about care and its impact among family caregivers of patients with AD participating in a psychoeducational group intervention, as well as the possible positive and negative aspects associated with this role. The subjective impact of AD on the lives of these caregivers was assessed on each of the dimensions of the Caregiver Burden Scale using a semi-directed interview on perceptions about care. Methods: This was a prospective study, in which information was collected twice, before and after, psychoeducational intervention. Through the application of the scale, benefits were evident for all dimensions assessed in the instrument (general strain, isolation, disappointment, emotional involvement and environment). Results: The results showed that after the psychoeducational intervention, caregivers felt less burdened by care compared to pre-intervention. Conclusion: These findings confirm that expanded implementation of psychoeducational interventions for caregivers of patients with AD can be beneficial for both caregivers and patients. Resumo Atividades psicoeducacionais constitui um meio de promover auxílio a cuidadores de acientes com Alzheimer's disease (DA), representam um espaço para o compartilhamento de conhecimentos que tem como foco primário temas dirigidos a estratégias e habilidades de enfretamento. Objetivo: O objetivo do presente estudo foi levantar as percepções sobre o cuidar e seu impacto entre cuidadores familiares de portadores de DA, participantes de um Grupo de Intervenção Psicoeducativa. Visou-se também detectar possíveis impactos em variáveis objetivas e subjetivas, pré e pós intervenção psicoeducacional. Métodos: Esta pesquisa tratou-se de um estudo prospectivo, no qual foram coletadas informações em dois momentos distintos, antes e após a intervenção psicoeducativa. Através da aplicação da Escala perceberam-se benefícios em todas as dimensões envolvidas nesta (tensão geral, isolamento, decepção, envolvimento emocional e ambiente). Resultados: Os resultados demonstraram que após a intervenção psicoeducativa, os cuidadores apresentaram menor sobrecarga em relação ao cuidado, do que comparado ao início da intervenção. Conclusão: Esses achados confirmam que as intervenções psicoeducacionais implementadas de modo expandido podem ser benéficas para cuidadores e pacientes com DA.

Background Memory complaints are quite common among the elderly; yet, the clinical relevance of these complaints to diagnose cognitive decline is debatable, since several different factors could be associated with them. Objective The present paper examined the correlations between memory complaints, depressive symptoms and cognitive performance in a group of 301 elderly individuals who lived in the district of Ermelino Matarazzo, São Paulo, and who participated in the population-based survey entitled Profiles of Frailty in Elderly Brazilians by the FIBRA Network. Methods Cognitive performance was assessed with the memorization test involving 10 common pictures, the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Verbal Fluency (VF) test, and the Clock Drawing Test, which comprise the Brief Cognitive Screening Battery (BCSB). Memory complaints were assessed with the Memory Complaint Questionnaire (MAC-Q), and depressive symptoms with the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Results Female participants had higher rates of memory complaints when compared to male participants (p = 0.013). Subjects with less years of schooling had more severe memory complaints and poorer cognitive performance than those with more years of schooling (p < 0.003). The presence of depressive symptoms was associated with poorer memory assessment scores (r = 0.39, p < 0.001). Discussion Memory complaints were correlated with sex, schooling and depressive symptoms among elderly individuals residing in the community. No correlation was found between complaints and cognitive performance. Background: Depression in old age is a complex multifactorial phenomenon that is influenced by several biopsychosocial variables. Depressive symptoms are associated with the presence of chronic diseases, with being female, with low education and low income levels, and with poor perceived health assessment. In impoverished areas, older adults may have more physical disability, as they may have less access to health services. Therefore, they may be more likely to report depressive symptoms.Methods: Population-based cross-sectional research was undertaken using data from the FIBRA study conducted in Ermelino Matarazzo, a poor subdistrict of the city of São Paulo, Brazil. The participants comprised 303 elderly people, aged 65 years and over, who attended a single-session data collection effort carried out at community centers. The protocol comprised sociodemographic and self-reported health variables, and the Geriatric Depression Scale.Results: The majority of the subjects reported five or fewer symptoms of depression (79.21%), reported one or two self-reported chronic diseases (56.86%), declared themselves to have one or two self-reported health problems (46.15%), and had good perceived health assessment (40.27%). The presence of depressive symptoms was associated with a higher number of self-reported health problems, poor perceived health assessment, and lower schooling levels, in the total sample and in analyses including men only. For women, depressive symptoms were associated with the number of self-reported health problems and family income.Conclusion: The presence of health problems, such as falls and memory problems, lower perceived health, and low education (and low family income for women) were associated with a higher presence of depressive symptoms among elderly people in this poor area of São Paulo.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of a multidisciplinary rehabilitation program on cognition, quality of life, and neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with mild Alzheimer's disease. METHOD: The present study was a single-blind, controlled study that was conducted at a university-based day-hospital memory facility. The study included 25 Alzheimer's patients and their caregivers and involved a 12-week stimulation and psychoeducational program. The comparison group consisted of 16 Alzheimer's patients in waiting lists for future intervention. INTERVENTION: Group sessions were provided by a multiprofessional team and included memory training, computer-assisted cognitive stimulation, expressive activities (painting, verbal expression, writing), physiotherapy, and physical training. Treatment was administered twice a week during 6.5-h gatherings. MEASUREMENTS: The assessment battery comprised the following tests: Mini-Mental State Examination, Short Cognitive Test, Quality of Life in Alzheimer's disease, Neuropsychiatric Inventory, and Geriatric Depression Scale. Test scores were evaluated at baseline and the end of the study by raters who were blinded to the group assignments. RESULTS: Measurements of global cognitive function and performance on attention tasks indicated that patients in the experimental group remained stable, whereas controls displayed mild but significant worsening. The intervention was associated with reduced depression symptoms for patients and caregivers and decreased neuropsychiatric symptoms in Alzheimer's subjects. The treatment was also beneficial for the patients' quality of life. CONCLUSION: This multimodal rehabilitation program was associated with cognitive stability and significant improvements in the quality of life for Alzheimer's patients. We also observed a significant decrease in depressive symptoms and caregiver burden. These results support the notion that structured nonpharmacological interventions can yield adjunct and clinically relevant benefits in dementia treatment.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a multiple intervention programme for the prevention of falls in older adults from a University of the Third Age (U3A). Method: A quasi-experimental, non-controlled, longitudinal and quantitative study was performed. 69 older adults were allocated into three groups: Control (CG), Physical Exercise (PEG) and Multiple Intervention (MIG). The instruments/tests used were: sociodemographic questionnaire, Geriatric Depression Scale (15-items), Mini-Mental State Examination, Timed-Up and Go (TUG), Sit-to-Stand and Hand-Grip Strength, Falls Efficacy Scale-International and Falls Risk Awareness Questionnaire (FRAQ).The PEG and MIG groups underwent physical training (walking, muscular resistance, and balance) for 16 weeks (2x/week, 60 min/session). Elderly caregivers of other elderly people suffer from double vulnerability because they must deal with demands for care and for their own health. The objective of this study was to identify the association between double vulnerability and quality of life of elderly caregivers. The 148 participants were evaluated in relation to socio-demographic variables, quality of life, health self-assessment, perceived burden, measures of physical health of the caregiver and physical and cognitive vulnerability of the elderly who is the target of care. The hierarchical multivariate analysis showed that the elderly caregivers with the highest risk of worse quality of life were those with three or more diseases, with medium or high burden and with a worse health evaluation compared to the past. Greater health weakness is expected over the course of ageing; therefore, to study elderly caregivers, the perception of changes in health is a more pertinent measure than just the assessment of immediate health.
