This paper presents a noble approach to develop a digital healthcare system for Bangladesh, a country which is soon going to become a developing country. We made an online application to help the masses to get access to healthcare easily and effectively. The application consists of two modules, doctor/hospital information system and emergency services. It has user-friendly features for doctor appointment making. Also, it has a blood donor search option, ambulance calling option, patient’s report view option, doctors ranking options etc. The doctors ranking is a special feature which was calculated based on doctor’s educational qualification, experience, average count of appointments made by patients and patient’s feedback. Feedback form real users showed that this information system was very helpful for them. If implemented countrywide, this system of digital healthcare may pave the way for an effective healthcare service in Bangladesh.

Now-a-days frequent mishaps like the road accident or other life-risking accident leading to operational emergencies are increasing day by day and the blood donor for such victims or patients are very hard to find in a short period. Sometimes it is really tough to collect the blood of the same group from the relatives of a patient in dying moments. The main objective of this work is to make a connection with these two groups who are in need of blood and who are willing to donate. We have determined the shortest distance between blood seeker and blood donors using the Dijkstra Algorithm. Anybody can contact the nearest blood donor of any group in a particular area quickly. By implementing this idea, the harassment of the victim can be lessened and so many lives can be saved.

Introduction Currently, there is increasing interest in the identification of natural sources of antioxidants that have minimal side effects and can be used as preventive medicine. In this study, the protective role of honey against oxidative damage and hepatotoxicity induced by sub-chronic exposure to chlorpyrifos (CPF) was investigated. Methods Female Wistar rats ( n = 24) were randomly divided into the following four groups: (1) control, (2) honey-treated (3.0 g/kg), (3) CPF-treated (5.4 mg/kg) and (4) honey (3.0 g/kg) + CPF (5.4 mg/kg) treatments. All of the doses were administered daily via oral gavage for 4 weeks. Results Oral exposure to CPF caused hepato- and nephrotoxicity as indicated by the marked elevation in the serum hepatic marker enzymes (the transaminases and alkaline phosphatase activities), the total bilirubin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, urea, creatinine and hepatic lipid peroxidation levels, whereas the serum total protein level was significantly lower compared with the control. A significant decrease in the body weight gain and an increase in the absolute and relative liver weights were observed in the CPF-treated animals compared with the control. The biochemical alterations observed were accompanied by histopathological changes marked by the appearance of degenerative necrosis, congestion, inflammation and edema in the liver section. However, co-treatment with honey ameliorated the changes in the investigated biochemical parameters and the changes in the body and liver weights as revealed by the inhibition of lipid peroxidation and the improvement observed histopathologically. Conclusions The present study suggests that honey has a protective potential for the alleviation of hepatic and renal toxicities induced by CPF.

The antihyperglycemic, antidiabetic, and antioxidant potentials of the methanolic extract ofGarcinia pedunculata(GP) fruit in rats were investigated. The acute antihyperglycemic effect of different doses of GP was studied in normal male Wistar rats. Diabetes was induced by streptozotocin (STZ) injection in another cohort of male Wistar rats and they showed significantly higher blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, altered lipid profiles, and lower insulin levels compared to nondiabetic control animals. There were increased lipid peroxidation and reduced levels of cellular antioxidant enzymes in different tissues of diabetic rats. However, oral administration of GP extracts, especially the highest dose (1000 mg/kg), significantly ameliorated hyperglycemia (42%); elevated insulin levels (165%); decreased HbA1c (29.4%); restored lipid levels (reduction in TG by 25%, TC by 15%, and LDL-C by 75% and increase in HDL-C by 4%), liver and renal function markers, and lipid peroxidation (reduction by 52% in the liver, 39% in the kidney, 44% in the heart, and 46% in the pancreas); and stimulated tissue antioxidant enzymes to near normalcy. Overall, the findings suggest that GP fruit is effective against hyperglycemia and could be used in the treatment of diabetes and its complications and other oxidative stress-mediated pathological conditions.

In developing countries, where about 75% of births occur at home or in the community, logistic problems prevent the weighing of every newborn child. Baby born with a weight less than 2,500 g is considered low birth weight, since below this value birth-specific infant mortality begins to rise rapidly. In Bangladesh, the prevalence of low birth weight is unacceptably high. Infant's sex differences, birth to conception interval, gestational age, and Apgar score are associated with infant birth weight. To screen low-birth-weight babies, simple anthropometric parameters can be used in rural areas where 80–90% of deliveries take place. A sample of 343 newborn singletons, 186 male and 157 female babies, were studied in Southwest region of Bangladesh to examine the birth weight status of newborns and to identify the relationship between birth weight and other anthropometric parameters of newborns. The mean birth weight was 2754.81±465.57 g, and 28.6% were low-birth-weight ((P=0.05). Mid upper arm circumference and chest circumference were identified as the optimal surrogate indicators of LBW babies. In the community where weighing of newborns is difficult, these measurements can be used to identify the LBW babies.

The present study was designed to investigate the cardioprotective effects of Sundarban honey (SH) in rats with isoproterenol- (ISO-) induced myocardial infarction. Adult male Wistar Albino rats were pretreated with Sundarban honey (5 g/kg) daily for a period of 6 weeks. After the treatment period, ISO (85 mg/kg) was subcutaneously injected into the rats at 24 h intervals for 2 days. ISO-induced myocardial damage was indicated by increased serum cardiac specific troponin I levels and cardiac marker enzyme activities including creatine kinase-MB, lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate transaminase, and alanine transaminase. Significant increases in serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels were also observed, along with a reduction in the serum high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol level. In addition to these diagnostic markers, the levels of lipid peroxide products were significantly increased. The activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase were significantly decreased in the hearts after ISO-induced myocardial infarction. However, pretreatment of ischemic rats with Sundarban honey brought the biochemical parameters to near normalcy, indicating the protective effect of Sundarban honey against ISO-induced ischemia in rats. Histopathological findings of the heart tissues further confirmed the biochemical findings, indicating that Sundarban honey confers protection against ISO-induced oxidative stress in the myocardium.

A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among the selected pregnant women (n=1155) in Dhaka city to observe the antenatal care (ANC) practices during the period of January 2014 to December 2016. All the information of the anthropometric, socio-economic and ANC practices were collected by a semi-structured pretested questionnaire. During pregnancy, 87.9% mothers receive at least one time ANC whereas only one-third receive proper ANC (more than five ANC visits). Mental supports by the other family members is an important issue and in this study it was observed that 74.1% women get this support during pregnancy period. Tetanus Toxoid vaccine taken by 92.6% pregnant mothers. Medication during pregnancy is a common phenomenon in Dhaka city as 38.4% mother had taken different sort of medicine. Only 42.4% mothers regularly taken iron folic acid (IFA) supplements and 21.2% get sometimes. Regular food intake was observed all most all women (94.5%), is a good sign of safe motherhood care. It was noticed that Most of the mother didn’t have any pre-eclampsia and eclampsia (63.6%) and only 10.6% respondents had eclampsia. Education has great effects on maternal ANC practices, in this study it was observed that vaccination (P=0.002), ANC visits (P=0.000), intake of IFA (P=0.038), eclampsia (P=0.030) and regular intake of meal (P=0.011), reduced maternal stress (P=0.015) etc. had a significant role at 95% confidence interval level in case of antenatal care practices in Dhaka City.

The prevalence of obesity and hypertension (HTN) in university students of Bangladesh has not reported yet. Considering the proper health maintenance of this population in mind, the study was aimed to determine the prevalence of obesity and HTN as well as relationship among them in the students of a residential university of Bangladesh, Jahangirnagar University. This descriptive cross sectional study included 500 randomly selected students (250 males and 250 females). Participants completed a questionnaire on physical activity, sedentary behaviour, dietary factors, smoking and family history of obesity, HTN, and coronary artery disease. Blood pressure and anthropometric parameters such as height, weight, waist and hip circumferences were measured following standard procedure. The Statistical analyses were performed using the software SPSS.The prevalence of overweight was 25% (31.1% males, 15.6% females) and obesity 7.2% (9.4% males, 4% females). Pre-HTN was found at 27.1% (38% males, 11.2% females) and HTN at 2.2% (3.3% males, 0.4% females). A high rate of smoking, sedentary behavior, physical inactivity, excessive consumption of unhealthy food, and caffeine-rich drinks was also observed. Significant correlation was found between parameters of obesity and HTN. High prevalence of pre-HTN in males and central obesity in females were found which is immediately needed to control for better health maintenance of this population.
