Epibulbar tumour developed in the left eye of a 53-year-old woman. Light and electron microscopic study of the tumour revealed undifferentiated metastatic carcinoma. The patient underwent surgical intervention because of mammary carcinoma 5 years before the development of the epibulbar tumour.

The oculocardiac reflex was studied during unilateral ophthalmodynamographies and indentation ophthalmodynamometries in the sitting and lying positions. The reaction was less distinct during dynamometry than in dynamography. In the evaluation of the data on 200 patients, and the types of oculocardiac reflex, the correlations of the brachial pressure changes with the height of the compression pressure with respect to age, have been calculated.

The diurnal variations in the intraocular pressure and outflow resistance of the aqueous humour have been studied in 43 healthy young pigmented rabbits for a period of ten days using topical anaesthesia. The determinations yielded a statistically significant phasic variation in the intraocular pressure of the order of 1 to 2 mmHg, whereas a statistically significant phasic variation in the outflow resistance could not be shown. In spite of the fact that a shorter compression with the tonometer was performed than the classical 4 min. tonography, a clear ophthalmotonic consensual reaction could be observed in the second eye. The probability density functions of the measured parameters suggested the influence of several “disturbing factors” in the course of the measurements.

The electron microscopic investigation of the conjunctival lymphoma of a male patient, aged 25 has shown that the tumour consists prevailingly of lymphoid elements. To a smaller extent, reticulum cells were revealed too. Of these, some were cells with lobated nuclei and multinuclear giant cells resembling the cells of Hodgkin and Sternberg-Reed type found in lymphogranulomatosis. The ultrastructural investigation supports the hyperplastic character of the conjunctival lymphoma.

Die histologische Untersuchung und der Vergleich der beiden Geschwulste fuhrt zu der Auffassung, das das Vorhandensein des lymphatischen Gewebes in den Orbitalymphangiomen nicht kongenitalen Ursprungs ist, sondern sekundar entsteht und auf den Reiz zuruckzufuhren ist, welchen die Blutungen und das Fortschaffen des Blutes darstellen.

The vessel walls of six malignant choroidal melanomas were thin; only thin basal membranes and narrow endothelial linings could be observed with the electron microscope. The endothelium was even absent in some places. Tumor cells were released into the bloodstream through disruptions of the vessel walls in the epithelioid and spindle cell B type tumors.

During the electron microscopic examination of the retinoblastoma in a 21-month-old girl, we found numerous synaptic lamellae and synaptic vesicles in addition to other known features. These lamellae and vesicles can be regarded as additional proof of the neural origin of retinoblastoma.

With the scanning electron microscopic study of a case of the fascicular and two cases of epithelioid melanoblastomas it has been found that the shape of the cells is more variable than it was believed before on the basis of light microscopy. Certain types of arrangement described in histological observations, e.g. the fascicular type, can also be well demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy.

The photoreceptors and their synapses, the amacrine cells and a vein the nerve fibre layer of the human retina are shown on the basis of scanning electron microscopic investigations.
