Abstract

DiGeorge Syndrome (DGS) is a congenital disorder that affects the thymus, parathyroid glands, and heart and brain. Thymus involvement in DGS may vary between absence/hypoplasia of thymus to various forms of reduced T cell function. TBX1 deficiency causes a number of distinct vascular and heart defects, suggesting multiple roles in cardiovascular development, specifically, formation and growth of the pharyngeal arch arteries, growth and septation of the outflow tract of the heart, interventricular septation, and conal alignment. Here the authors describe a case of DGS presenting with severe combined immunodeficiency, esophageal atresia, and tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF). DGS is an important differential diagnosis in TEF.

Abstract

The correction of vaginal agenesis requires the creation of a neovaginal cavity that is dissected between the bladder and the rectum. To protect the length of the cavity, it is necessary to ensure the complete epithelialization of the apex of the ncovaginal cavity. The author prefers to tailor 2 pieces of full-thickness skin grafts longitudinally oil a vaginal stent that is molded into bullet shape. Six girls with vaginal agenesis underwent neovaginal construction using this method. The apex of the neovaginal cavity was perfectly epithelialized using this vaginal stent. The length of the ncovaginal cavity that is dissected during the operation was protected. The follow-up period ranged from 24 to 93 months (median, 57.2 months). Postoperative stricture or contracture of the neovagina did not occur in all patients. As a result, full-thickness skin graft is an efficient method for vaginal construction in patients with vaginal agenesis.

Abstract

This study describes the concept of prevention and identifies the knowledge, perceived benefits and barriers, as well as the practices of early detection of breast cancer among women from different cultural backgrounds and socioeconomic levels. A socioconstructivist qualitative study was conducted in Barcelona. The study population consisted of women who were either native (Spanish) or immigrants from low income countries, aged 40 to 69 years. Narrations of the 68 informants were subjected to sociological discourse analysis. Place and culture of origin, social class and the migratory process can either facilitate or constitute barriers to breast cancer prevention. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd
