The active skeletal muscle and the maintenance of muscle mass are essential for good health, wellness and disease prevention and treatment. The muscle as an endocrine organ capable of synthesizing myokines, has been documented recently. These peptides are secreted as a response to muscular contractions induced by exercise, and can develop molecular communication with other tissues, improving cardiovascular, metabolic, and mental health. The endocrine function of a muscle continues to be in a constant investigation; however, knowledge up to date urge us to continue promoting physical activity. Additionally, the extended knowledge of myokins is useful to prescribe individualized physical exercise programs to each patient. El músculo esquelético activo y el mantenimiento de la masa muscular son esenciales para la salud, el bienestar, la prevención y el tratamiento de enfermedades. Recientemente se ha documentado que el músculo, como órgano endocrino, es capaz de sintetizar mioquinas. Estos péptidos son secretados en respuesta a las contracciones musculares inducidas por el ejercicio, y son capaces de crear comunicación molecular con otros tejidos, beneficiando así la salud cardiovascular, metabólica y mental. La función endocrina del músculo continúa en investigación constante, sin embargo, lo conocido hasta ahora nos insta a seguir promoviendo la actividad física. Adicionalmente a esto, extender el conocimiento sobre las mioquinas, es útil para poder prescribir el ejercicio físico de manera individualizada y a la medida de cada paciente.

Introduction: High intensity interval training (HIIT) is a method that is widely used today. Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of HIIT on markers of oxidative stress and muscle damage in rats. Methods: The sample consisted of 60-day-old Wistar rats, divided into two groups: a control group (n=8) and an HIIT group (n=8). The training consisted of fourteen 20-second swimming sessions (loaded with weights equivalent to 14% of their body weight) with 10-second intervals between each session, performed for 12 consecutive days. Results: HIIT induced a reduction (−17.75%) in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (an oxidative stress marker) in hepatic tissue (p=0.0482). There was also a reduction (−31.80%) in the HIIT group in the level of superoxide dismutase enzyme activity in the liver (p=0.0375). However, there were no differences between the groups in catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, the total content of SH sulfhydryls, hydroperoxides, or carbonylated proteins in the hepatic tissue. No significant differences were found in any of these markers in the gastrocnemius muscle. The muscle damage markers creatinine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase were also similar between the groups in the gastrocnemius. Conclusion: The conclusion was that that short-term HIIT does not cause oxidative stress or muscle damage. Objetivo: El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar los efectos del HIIT en corto plazo sobre marcadores de estrés oxidativo y daño muscular en ratones. Métodos: La muestra consistió en ratones Wistar con 60 días de edad, divididos en dos grupos: grupo control (n = 8) y grupo HIIT (n = 8). El entrenamiento consistió en catorce sesiones de natación de 20 segundos (con cargas equivalentes a 14% del peso corporal) con intervalos de 10 segundos entre cada sesión, realizadas durante 12 días consecutivos. Resultados: El HIIT indujo una reducción (-17,75%) de las sustancias reactivas al ácido tiobarbitúrico (un marcador de estrés oxidativo) en el tejido hepático (p = 0,0482). Bos taurus indicus temperament is variable and affects beef tenderization. Our objective was to investigate temperament and performance of non–castrated Nellore and identify groups based on Longissimus lumborum (LL) pH decline as well as beef characteristics produced by those groups. We investigated 94 animals with a subset of carcasses (n = 24) selected based on LL pH at 24 h postmortem (pm) to represent two groups: resistant to pH decline (> 5.8 called pH–Res; n = 10) and normal (< 5.7 called pH–Nor; n = 14). Steaks were fabricated from the LL muscle and randomly assigned to aging (2, 7, 14, and 21 days). Sarcomere length, cooking loss, myofibrillar fragmentation index (MFI), and Warner–Bratzler shear force (WBSF) were determined. Data on temperament were investigated in a multivariate approach, while beef data were compared between groups using the analysis of variance. Rectal temperature at the beginning of the finishing phase and total weight gain were greater and related to animals in the pH–Res group (p < 0.01 and p = 0.03, respectively). Temperature and pH decline curves, sarcomere length, and cooking loss revealed that pH–Res produced beef with lower quality compared to the pH–Nor group. Results for MFI and WBSF did not show differences between groups within each time pm; however, overall steaks from pH–Res were tougher (p = 0.06). Incidence of LL pH between 5.8 and 5.9 at 24 h pm did not compromise the tenderization rate or extension; however, it affected the water holding capacity in this population of Nellore cattle.

Objective: To determine the effects of dry needling (DN) in active myofascial trigger points in the teres major muscle compared to an untreated control group in pain during throwing actions, shoulder range of motion (ROM), strength, and extensibility of the tissues in professional handball (HB) athletes. Methods: A randomised, single-blinded, controlled clinical trial was designed. Thirty HB athletes with shoulder pain were randomly assigned to the DN group (n = 15) or control group (n = 15). The DN group received a single session of ultrasound-guided DN technique in the teres major muscle. The control group received no intervention. Pain intensity during throwing actions (Numeric Pain Rating Score), shoulder ROM (inclinometer), isometric strength (hand-held dynamometer), and extensibility (inclinometer) were measured before and after treatment. Results: DN group showed statistically significant improvements with large effect sizes for pain intensity (p &lt, 0.001, E.S: 1.3), internal rotation ROM (p &lt, E.S: 3.0) and extensibility (p &lt, E.S: 2.9) compared to the control group. No statistically significant differences were found for isometric strength (p &gt, 0.05). Conclusion: A single session of DN in the teres major muscle was effective for improving pain intensity during throwing actions, internal rotation ROM and extensibility in HB athletes with shoulder pain.

Obesity treatments, such as calorie restriction (CR), eventually lead to muscle wasting and higher rates of neuroinflammation, whereas hypothalamic inflammatory conditions impair body weight (BW) control. Nicotinamide riboside (NR) has been proposed against obesity but with little evidence on skeletal muscle tissue (SMT) and neuroinflammation. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effects of CR on SMT and on hypothalamic inflammatory biomarkers in obese adult male Wistar rats, and whether NR supplementation alone or in combination with CR affects these parameters. Obesity was induced in rats through a cafeteria diet for 6 weeks. After that, a group of obese rats was exposed to CR, associated or not associated with NR supplementation (400 mg/kg), for another 4 weeks. As a result, obese rats, with or without CR, presented lower relative weight of SMT when compared with eutrophic rats. Rats under CR presented lower absolute SMT weight compared with obese and eutrophic rats, in addition to presenting elevated hypothalamic levels of TNF-α. NR supplementation, in all groups, enhanced weight loss and increased relative weight of the SMT. Furthermore, in animals under CR, NR reversed increases TNF-α levels in the hypothalamus. In this study, these data, although succinct, are the first to evidence the effects of NR on SMT and neuroinflammation when associated with CR, especially in obesity conditions. Therefore, this provides preliminary support for future studies in this investigative field. Furthermore, NR emerges as a potential adjuvant for preventing muscle mass loss in the weight loss processes.

Objectives The aim of this study was to verify the effects of supplementation with antioxidants (vitamins C and E) on oxidative stress, delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), and performance in football players during a recovery period after an exercise-induced oxidative stress protocol. Methods Twenty-one football athletes were randomly assigned to two groups: placebo and antioxidant-supplemented. Supplementation was performed in a double-blind, controlled manner using vitamin C (500 mg/d) and E (400 UI/d) for 15 d. After 7 d of supplementation, athletes were submitted to an exercise-induced oxidative stress protocol consisting of plyometric jumping and strength resistance sets to exhaustion. Blood samples, performance tests, and DOMS were determined before and 24, 48, and 72 h after exercise. Results Antioxidant supplementation was continued during the recuperation week and for a total of 15 d. Antioxidant supplementation caused a significant increase in plasma vitamins C and E. The antioxidant supplementation could inhibit oxidative stress characterized by elevated lipid peroxidation markers malondialdehyde and total lipid peroxidation as well as reduced ratio of glutathione to oxidized glutathione promoted by exercise. Antioxidant supplementation, however, did not significantly reduce the plasma creatine kinesis concentration or DOMS during the recovery days. Likewise, supplementation with vitamin C and E did not improve lower body power, agility, or anaerobic power, nor did it provide any indication of faster muscle recovery. Conclusion Antioxidant supplementation does not attenuate elevated markers of muscle damage or muscle soreness promoted by acute exercise and do not exert any ergogenic effect on football performance of young athletes, although it reduced oxidative stress.

AIM: The purpose of the present study was to compare and quantify with ultrasound imaging (USI) the extensor digitorum longus (EDL), tibialis anterior (TA) and peroneus muscles (PER) muscle thickness and cross-sectional area (CSA) between chronic non-insertional Achilles tendinopathy (AT) and healthy subjects. METHODS: a sample of 143 individuals was recruited and divided in two groups: chronic non-insertional AT group (n = 71) and a healthy group (n = 72). The thickness and CSA were assessment by USI for EDL, TA and PER muscles in both groups. RESULTS: The thickness evaluation for the TA muscle increased showing statistically significant differences (P = 0.018) as well as for the thickness of the PER muscles significant differences (P = 0.001) were observed in favor the tendinopathy group. The CSA measurements showed statistically significant differences for a decrease in EDL (P = 0.000), TA (P = 0.001) and PER muscles (P = 0.011) for the tendinopathy group with respect to the control group. CONCLUSIONS: The CSA of the EDL, TA and PER muscles is reduced in participants with chronic non-insertional AT. The thickness for TA muscle is increased as well as a decrease of PER muscles thickness is presented for the AT group with respect to the control group. Background Ankle sprain is one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries in sports, at work, and at home. Subjects who suffer from this injury may develop ankle instability. Functional instability has been associated with a high rate of resprain and impaired neuromuscular control in patients with ankle instability. Objective Measurement of neural and muscular mechanosensitivity after ankle sprain injury and establishment of the relationship between these variables. Methods A cross-sectional case-control study was performed with a sample of 58 students from Alcalá de Henares University (21 males and 37 females, mean age ± SD = 21 ± 3.7 years). Subjects were divided into two groups: a case group (N = 29, subjects with unstable ankle) and a control group (N = 29, healthy subjects). The pressure pain threshold (PPT) of the tibialis anterior, peroneus longus, and peroneus brevis muscles and mechanosensitivity of the common peroneus and tibial nerves were evaluated in all subjects through a manual mechanical algometer. Results Neuromuscular PPTs showed significant differences (P Conclusions Participants with chronic ankle instability showed higher neuromuscular mechanosensitivity in muscles and nerves surrounding the ankle joint than healthy subjects. These findings indicate that low PPT values may be associated with symptoms that characterize this disease.

Producción Científica, This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to provide scientific evidence regarding the effects of training on respiratory muscle training’s impact with the PowerBreath®. A systematic analysis based on the PRISMA guides and a conducted research structured around the bases of Web of Science, Scopus, Medline/PubMed, SciELO y Cochrane Library Plus. Six articles published before January 2021 were included. The documentation and quantification of heterogeneity in every meta-analysis were directed through Cochran’s Q test and the statistic I2; additionally, a biased publication analysis was made using funnel plots, whose asymmetry was quantified Egger’s regression. The methodological quality was assessed through McMaster’s. PowerBreath® administering a ≥ 15% resistive load of the maximum inspiratory pressure (PIM) achieves significant improvements (54%) in said pressure within 4 weeks of commencing the inspiratory muscle training. The maximal volume of oxygen (VO2max) considerable enhancements was achieved from the 6 weeks associated with the maximum inspiratory pressure ≥ 21.5% post inspiratory muscle training onwards. Conversely, a significant blood lactate concentration decrement occurred from the 4th week of inspiratory muscle training, after a maximum inspiratory pressure ≥ 6.8% increment. PowerBreath® is a useful device to stimulate sport performance and increase pulmonary function.

The influence of energy restriction (ER) on muscle is controversial, and the mechanisms are not well understood. To study the effect of ER on skeletal muscle phenotype and the influence of vitamin D, rats (n = 34) were fed a control diet or an ER diet. Muscle mass, muscle somatic index (MSI), fiber-type composition, fiber size, and metabolic activity were studied in tibialis cranialis (TC) and soleus (SOL) muscles. Plasma vitamin D metabolites and renal expression of enzymes involved in vitamin D metabolism were measured. In the ER group, muscle weight was unchanged in TC and decreased by 12% in SOL, but MSI increased in both muscles (p &lt, 0.0001) by 55% and 36%, respectively. Histomorphometric studies showed 14% increase in the percentage of type IIA fibers and 13% reduction in type IIX fibers in TC of ER rats. Decreased size of type I fibers and reduced oxidative activity was identified in SOL of ER rats. An increase in plasma 1,25(OH)2-vitamin D (169.7 ± 6.8 vs. 85.4 ± 11.5 pg/mL, p &lt, 0.0001) with kidney up-regulation of CYP27b1 and down-regulation of CYP24a1 was observed in ER rats. Plasma vitamin D correlated with MSI in both muscles (p &lt, 0.001), with the percentages of type IIA and type IIX fibers in TC and with the oxidative profile in SOL. In conclusion, ER preserves skeletal muscle mass, improves contractile phenotype in phasic muscles (TC), and reduces energy expenditure in antigravity muscles (SOL). These beneficial effects are closely related to the increases in vitamin D secondary to ER.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of photobiomodulation therapy in redox status, angiogenesis marker – vascular endothelial growth factor – and in the functional recovery in denervated muscle. Methods: A total of 32 female Wistar rats underwent a crush injury and were randomly divided into four groups: Light Emitting Diode Group 2 and Control Group 2 (muscle collected 2 days after injury), and Light Emitting Diode Group 21 and Control Group 21 (muscle collected 21 days afterinjury). Light Emitting Diode Group 2 and Light Emitting Diode Group 21 received two and ten light emitting diode applications (630±20nm, 9J/cm2, 300mW), respectively, and the Control Group 2 and Control Group 21 did not receive any treatment. Background: Eccentric exercises have been used in physical training, injury prevention and rehabilitation programs. The systematic use of eccentric training promotes specific morphological adaptations on skeletal muscles. However, synergistic muscles, such as the triceps surae components, might display different structural adaptations due to differences in architecture, function and load sharing. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the effects of an eccentric training program on the triceps surae (gastrocnemius medialis - GM, gastrocnemius lateralis - GL, and soleus - SO) muscle architecture. Methods: Twenty healthy male subjects (26±4 years) underwent a 4-week control period followed by a 12-week eccentric training program. Muscle architecture (fascicle length, pennation angle, and muscle thickness) of GM, GL and SO was evaluated every four weeks by ultrasonography. Results: Fascicle lengths (GM: 13.2%; GL: 8.8%; SO: 21%) and muscle thickness increased (GM: 14.9%; GL: 15.3%; SO: 19.1%) from pre- to post-training, whereas pennation angles remained similar. GM and SO fascicle length and muscle thickness increased up to the 8th training week, whereas GL fascicle length increased up to the 4th week. SO displayed the highest, and GL the smallest gains in fascicle length post-training. Conclusion: All three synergistic plantar flexor muscles increased fascicle length and muscle thickness with eccentric training. Muscle thickness increased similarly among the synergistic muscles, while the muscle with the shortest fascicle length at baseline (SO) showed the greatest increase in fascicle length.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between body composition characteristics and components of physical performance in male karate athletes from Chile. Material and Methods: Observational design with 18 male athletes competing in different age categories in regional and national competitions. Body Mass (MC), Fat Mass (MG), % Fat Mass (%MG), Muscle Mass (MM), Squat Jump (SJ), Countermovement Jump (CMJ), linear speed at 0-5 meters, Change of Direction (COD) and the 20 Meters Shuttle Run (20MSR) test were evaluated. Results: The sample was made up of 18 athletes with the following characteristics: 16.4 (3.5) years; 167.3 (7.3) cm; 69.5 (11.8) kg; 3 (1) years of experience regularly. Among the main findings of this study in terms of average, an increase in MC and MM was documented as age advances. MG fluctuated and a lower MG and %MG were documented in the 6-17 years category. Introduction: The electric activity of muscles can be assessed using electromyography to determine their function and help identify possible delays in motor development. Objective: Determine the amplitude of the electromyographic activity of the head and trunk flexor and extensor muscles of term and preterm newborns. Method: This is a longitudinal pilot study where 20 preterm and 20 term newborns admitted to the Prof. Fernando Figueira Institute of Comprehensive Medicine were assessed. All the newborns were evaluated between 24 and 72 hours after delivery, with the premature children assessed a second time when term equivalent age was reached at 40 weeks. Data were recorded using a surface electromyograph and the electrodes were attached to the muscle bellies of the sternocleidomastoid, upper portion of the trapezius, rectus abdominis and erector spinae muscles. Results: Comparison of the electromyographic activity between the preterm newborns showed significantly higher values in all the muscles when the group reached term equivalent age. Additionally, the electromyographic activity of the term group was greater than that obtained by the preterm newborns. Conclusion: With advancing age and maturation of the physiological systems, including the muscle system, preterm newborns tend to exhibit a similar muscle activation behavior to that of the term infants, resulting in better motor development. Resumo Introdução: Atividade elétrica dos músculos pode ser avaliada através da eletromiografia que permite verificar com detalhes a função dos músculos e com isso auxiliar na identificação de possíveis atrasos do desenvolvimento motor. Objetivo: Determinar a amplitude da atividade eletromiográfica dos músculos flexores e extensores da cabeça e do tronco de recém-nascidos a termo e pré-termo. Método: Estudo piloto, longitudinal, onde foram avaliados 20 recém-nascidos pré-termo e 20 recém-nascidos a termo admitidos no Instituto de Medicina Integral Prof. Fernando Figueira. Todos os recém-nascidos foram avaliados entre 24 e 72 horas após o nascimento, sendo as crianças prematuras avaliadas uma segunda vez quando atingiram a idade equivalente ao termo, com 40 semanas. O registro foi feito através de um eletromiográfo de superfície e os eletrodos colados nos ventres musculares do esternocleidomastoideo, porção superior do músculo trapézio, no reto abdominal e eretores da espinha. Resultados: A comparação da atividade eletromiográfica do grupo recém-nascidos pré-termo mostrou valores significativamente maiores em todos os músculos quando o grupo atingiu a idade equivalente ao termo. Também foi observado que a atividade eletromiográfica do grupo recém-nascidos a termo foi maior que a encontrada no grupo recém-nascidos pré-termo. Conclusão: Os recém-nascidos pré-termo com o avançar da idade e consequentemente maturação dos sistemas fisiológicos, dentre eles o muscular, tendem a ter um comportamento da ativação muscular similar a dos recém-nascidos a termo, assim permitindo um melhor desenvolvimento motor.

Background Malaria is one of the most prevalent infectious disease in the world with 3.2 billion humans at risk. Malaria causes splenomegaly and damage in other organs including skeletal muscles. Skeletal muscles comprise nearly 50% of the human body and are largely responsible for the regulation and modulation of overall metabolism. It is essential to understand how malaria damages muscles in order to develop effective preventive measures and/or treatments. Using a pre-clinical animal model, the potential molecular mechanisms of Plasmodium infection affecting skeletal muscles of mice were investigated. Methods Mouse Signal Transduction Pathway Finder PCR Array was used to monitor gene expression changes of 10 essential signalling pathways in skeletal muscles from mice infected with Plasmodium berghei and Plasmodium chabaudi. Then, a new targeted-lipidomic approach using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) to profile 158 lipid signalling mediators (LMs), mostly eicosanoids derived from arachidonic acid (AA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), was applied. Finally, 16 key LMs directly associated with inflammation, oxidative stress, and tissue healing in skeletal muscles, were quantified. Results The results showed that the expression of key genes altered by Plasmodium infection is associated with inflammation, oxidative stress, and atrophy. In support to gene profiling results, lipidomics revealed higher concentrations of LMs in skeletal muscles directly related to inflammatory responses, while on the levels of LMs crucial in resolving inflammation and tissue repair reduced significantly. Conclusion The results provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms of malaria-induced muscle damage and revealed a potential mechanism modulating inflammation in malarial muscles. These pre-clinical studies should help with future clinical studies in humans aimed at monitoring of disease progression and development of specific interventions for the prevention and mitigation of long-term chronic effects on skeletal muscle function.

Resumen Introducción. Las diferencias en la activación muscular de las porciones lateral y medial del cuádriceps durante la ejecución del salto, pueden convertirse en un factor de riesgo neuromuscular al aumentar el valgo dinámico de rodilla y, en consecuencia, el riesgo de lesión del ligamento cruzado anterior de la rodilla. Objetivo. Determinar la diferencia en la activación de los vastos lateral y medial del cuádriceps mediante electromiografía de superficie durante el salto con una sola pierna en los planos sagital y frontal en mujeres deportistas. Materiales y métodos. Se hizo un estudio cuantitativo de corte transversal con la participación de 64 mujeres deportistas a quienes se les tomaron las medidas antropométricas. Se hicieron pruebas de salto vertical y lateral con una sola pierna evaluados mediante la activación electromiográfica de los vastos medial y lateral, y la valoración de la flexibilidad de la banda iliotibial. Resultados. Se encontró una relación estadísticamente significativa (p≤0,05) entre el índice de masa corporal, el porcentaje de grasa y la potencia en los saltos verticales con una sola pierna. Se encontró, asimismo, significación estadística (p≤0,05) por una mayor activación del vasto lateral en el salto vertical con la pierna derecha y en el salto lateral con las dos piernas. Conclusión. Las deportistas presentaron diferencias en la activación de los cuádriceps, siendo mayor la activación del vasto lateral en la mayoría de los saltos con una sola pierna tanto en el plano sagital como en el frontal, lo cual puede contribuir a un aumento del riesgo de lesión de rodilla en la práctica deportiva. Abstract Introduction: Differences in the lateral and medial portions from quadriceps muscular activation during the execution of the jump can become a neuromuscular risk factor raising knee dynamic valgus and increasing the risk for anterior cruciate ligament injury. Objective: To determine the difference in the activation of the lateral and medial vastus using surface electromyography during single-leg jumps in the sagittal and frontal plane in female athletes. Materials and methods: This was a quantitative, cross-sectional study. A total of 64 female athletes participated. We carried out anthropometric measurements, vertical and lateral single-leg jump tests with the evaluation of vastus medialis and lateral electromyographic activation during the tests and iliotibial band flexibility assessment. Results: There was a statistically significant relationship (p≤0.05) between the body mass index, fat percentage, and vertical single-leg jump power. We also found statistical significance (p≤0.05), with greater activation of the lateral vastus in the right lower limb vertical jump and in the lateral jump in both lower limbs. Conclusion: The athletes presented differences in quadriceps activation, showing higher lateral vastus activation in most of the single-leg jumps, both in the sagittal and frontal plane. This may increase the risk for suffering knee injuries during sports practice.

Muscle coordination plays an important role in glenohumeral stability. The rotator cuff and the long head of the biceps are considered the primary dynamic stabilizers muscles. However, the fact that a subgroup of patients with a massive tear in the rotator cuff were able to keep a normal function, should make us question this traditional view. We hypothesize that the teres major which is also a monoarticular scapulohumeral muscle, although it is not part of the conjoined tendon of the rotator cuff, can play a role in glenohumeral stability by a direct support of the humeral head generated by the particular posteroanterior location of this muscle under the humeral head and which, as far as we know, has not been written up previously. This particular effect could appear while the arm is being lifted and the humeral head could be leaning on against the teres major muscle belly underneath it. An anatomical a radiological study was carried out to substantiate our hypothesis. Two cadaver specimens were used for the anatomical study. Frist body was studied through conventional dissection. The second body was analysed through sectional anatomy. Then a radiological study was carried out using magnetic resonance imaging in a healthy male volunteer. Both anatomically and radiologically, the anteroinferior surface of the humeral head was showed firmly resting against the muscle belly of the teres major, to the point of misshaping it from 110 degrees of arm elevation with external rotation. The specific contribution of this effect to the glenohumeral stability needs to be confirmed by further studies and can help us to prevent the high incidence of glenohumeral dislocations. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Free radicals produced during exercise play a role in modulating cell signaling pathways. High doses of antioxidants may hamper adaptations to exercise training. However, their benefits are unclear. This review aims to examine whether vitamin C (VitC) and/or vitamin E (VitE) supplementation (SUP) prevents exercise-induced muscle damage. The PubMed, Web of Science, Medline, CINAHL, and SPORTDiscus databases were searched, and 21 articles were included. Four studies examined the effects of acute VitC SUP given pre-exercise: in one study, lower CK levels post-exercise was observed; in three, no difference was recorded. In one study, acute VitE SUP reduced CK activity 1 h post-exercise in conditions of hypoxia. In three studies, chronic VitE SUP did not reduce CK activity after an exercise session. Chronic VitE SUP did not reduce creatine kinase (CK) concentrations after three strength training sessions, but it was effective after 6 days of endurance training in another study. Chronic SUP with VitC + E reduced CK activity post-exercise in two studies, but there was no such effect in four studies. Finally, three studies described the effects of chronic VitC + E SUP and long-term exercise, reporting dissimilar results. To conclude, although there is some evidence of a protective effect of VitC and/or VitE against exercise-induced muscle damage, the available data are not conclusive. Muscle depletion and sarcopenic obesity are related to a higher morbimortality risk in chronic kidney disease (CKD). We evaluated bed-side measures/indexes associated with low muscle mass, sarcopenia, obesity, and sarcopenic obesity in CKD and proposed cutoffs for each parameter. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People revised consensus applying dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and hand grip strength (HGS), and obesity according to the International Society for Clinical Densitometry. Anthropometric parameters including calf (CC) and waist (WC) circumferences and WC/height (WC/H); bioelectrical impedance data including appendicular fat free mass (AFFM) and fat mass index (FMI) were assessed. ROC analysis and area under the curve (AUC) were applied for performance analyses. AFFM and CC presented the best performances for low muscle mass diagnosis–AFFM AUC for women was 0.96 and for men, 0.94, and CC AUC for women was 0.89 and for men, 0.85. FMI and WC/H were the best parameters for obesity diagnosis–FMI AUC for women was 0.99 and for men, 0.96, and WC/H AUC for women was 0.94 and for men, 0.95. The cutoffs (sensibility and specificity, respectively) for women were AFFM≤15.87 (90%; 96%), CC≤35.5 (76%; 94%), FMI>12.58 (100%; 93%), and WC/H>0.66 (91%; 84%); and for men, AFFM≤21.43 (98%; 84%), CC≤37 (88%; 69%), FMI>8.82 (93%; 88%), and WC/H>0.60 (95%; 80%). Sensibility and specificity for sarcopenia diagnosis were for AFFM+HGS in women 85% and 99% and in men, 100% and 99%; for CC+HGS in women 85% and 99% and in men, 100% and 100%; and for sarcopenic obesity were for FMI+AFFM in women 75% and 97% and in men, 75% and 95%. The tested bed-side measures/indexes presented excellent performance.

Background Hip abductor muscles are important for the maintenance of postural stability, mainly on the mediolateral direction and unipodal support conditions. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of unilateral induced fatigue of hip abductor muscles on balance and functional capacity of older women. Methods The study included physically independent women aged 60–75 years. We assessed static balance with the single limb stance test (SLS) and evaluated functional capacity with the maximum gait speed (MGS) and step test (ST). We ran the protocol of hip abductor muscle fatigue with a Biodex isokinetic dynamometer. Assessment of balance and functional capacity happened before and after the muscle fatigue protocol. We applied the t-test for repeated measures to determine whether unilateral hip abductor muscle fatigue influences the performance in the tests (SLS, MGS and ST). Results The protocol of hip abductor muscle fatigue negatively affected all three evaluated tasks: SLS (p = 0.000), ST (p = 0.000) and MGS (p = 0.000). However, the single limb stance test was the most task affected (effect size = 0.51, pre- and post-fatigue difference = 28.1 %). Conclusion After the unilateral muscle fatigue of hip abductors, we observed the worst performance on clinical tests, mainly regarding the SLS test, which shows the involvement of hip abductors during usual motor tasks. However, the small magnitude of the limitation of functional tests (MGS and ST) suggests the presence of postural compensations.

Cross-sectional studies suggest that training can increase muscle carnosine (MCarn), although longitudinal studies have failed to confirm this. A lack of control for dietary β-alanine intake or muscle fiber type shifting may have hampered their conclusions. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on MCarn.Twenty vegetarian men were randomly assigned to a control (CON) (n = 10) or HIIT (n = 10) group. High-intensity interval training was performed on a cycle ergometer for 12 wk, with progressive volume (6-12 series) and intensity (140%-170% lactate threshold [LT]). Muscle carnosine was quantified in whole-muscle and individual fibers; expression of selected genes (CARNS, CNDP2, ABAT, TauT, and PAT1) and muscle buffering capacity in vitro (βmin vitro) were also determined. Exercise tests were performed to evaluate total work done, V˙O2max, ventilatory thresholds (VT) and LT.Total work done, VT, LT, V˙O2max, and βmin vitro were improved in the HIIT group (all P0.05), but not in CON (P0.05). MCarn (in mmol·kg dry muscle) increased in the HIIT (15.8 ± 5.7 to 20.6 ± 5.3; P = 0.012) but not the CON group (14.3 ± 5.3 to 15.0 ± 4.9; P = 0.99). In type I fibers, MCarn increased in the HIIT (from 14.4 ± 5.9 to 16.8 ± 7.6; P = 0.047) but not the CON group (from 14.0 ± 5.5 to 14.9 ± 5.4; P = 0.99). In type IIa fibers, MCarn increased in the HIIT group (from 18.8 ± 6.1 to 20.5 ± 6.4; P = 0.067) but not the CON group (from 19.7 ± 4.5 to 18.8 ± 4.4; P = 0.37). No changes in gene expression were shown.In the absence of any dietary intake of β-alanine, HIIT increased MCarn content. The contribution of increased MCarn to the total increase in βmin vitro appears to be small.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women in the world and provides functional changes in the human body. Evaluate women submitted to unilateral mastectomy, through electromyographic activity (mandibular rest, right and left laterality, protrusion, maximum voluntary contraction with and without Parafilm, habitual and non-habitual mastication) and thickness (rest and maximum voluntary contraction) of the right temporal muscle (RT), left temporal (LT), right masseter (RM) and left masseter (LM), also the molar bite force (right and left) and compare the data with healthy women. Material and Methods: 32 women were divided into two groups: unilateral mastectomy group (MG), average ± standard deviation 56.50±14.50 years (n=16) and without the disease group (CG), average ± standard deviation 56.56±14.15 years (n=16). The normalized electromyographic data, muscle thickness and maximal molar bite force were tabulated and submitted to statistical analysis (SPSS 21.0; student t test, p≤0.05). Significant statistical differences between MG and CG were found in right laterality, for RM (p=0.02); left laterality, for LT (p=0.01); chewing with peanuts, for RM (p=0.04); chewing with raisins, for LM (p=0.04) and right molar bite force (p=0.03). There was no statistically significant difference between MG and CG for muscle thickness. The results of this study suggest that women undergoing unilateral mastectomy may present functional changes, with emphasis on muscular hyperactivity, lower masticatory efficiency and lower maxillary bite force.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common malignant primary brain tumor affecting adults. In pediatric patients, GBM exhibits genetic variations distinct from those identified in the adult GBM phenotype. This tumor exhibits complex genetic changes leading to malignant progression and resistance to standard therapies including radiotherapy and temozolomide treatment. The GDF15 gene codes for a growth factor whose expression is altered in the presence of inflammations and malignancies. GDF15 is associated with a poor prognosis and with radio- and chemoresistance in a variety of tumors. The aim of this study was to compare the response to GDF15 knockdown in adult (U343) and pediatric (KNS42) GBM cell line models. The expression of the GDF15 gene was investigated by qRT-PCR and overexpression was identified in both GBM cell lines. The KNS42 and U343 cell lines were submitted to lentiviral transduction with shRNA of GDF15 and validated at the protein level. To understand the difference between cell lines, RNAseq was performed after GDF15 knockdown. The data obtained demonstrated that the pathways were differentially expressed in adult GBM and pediatric GBM cell lines. This was confirmed by functional assays perfomed after independent treatments (radiotherapy and TMZ). These results demonstrated that GBM cell lines had distinct responses to GDF15 knockdown, a fact that can be explained by the different molecular profile of pediatric and adult GBM.

Introduction: Excessive physical exercise combined with certain psychic and sociodemographic factors can lead to dependence. Objective: To examine which factors lead to the emergence of exercise dependence. Methods: Sample consisted of 103 men (mean age 27.3 years, SD 6.127) who performed exercises at gyms at least three times a week in the last year or more in Novi Pazar, Sjenica, Raska and Tutin, Serbia. Participants completed questionnaires and took appropriate tests. Results: Our results showed that there is no association between exercise dependence and financial status, number of siblings, level of education, family stability, health, and medication use among the interviewees. However, it was found that the degree of exercise dependence is associated with marital status and problems with the law. Regression analysis showed that body dysmorphia, body mass index and aggressiveness are better predictors of exercise dependence. Conclusion: People whose self-perception is dismorphic have lower self-esteem, and exercise in gyms to improve their physical appearance. If we consider other characteristics, such as unfavorable BMI, problems with the lаw and being single, it is hardly surprising these individuals cross the line between healthy exercise and exercise dependence. An important finding is that aggressiveness and exercise dependence are related to problems with the law due to aggression, and body dysmorphia. Objetivo: Examinar quais fatores levam ao surgimento de dependência do exercício. Métodos: A amostra foi composta por 103 homens (média de idade 27,3 anos, DP 6,127) que faziam exercícios em academia pelo menos três vezes por semana no último ano ou mais, em Novi Pazar, Sjenica, Raška e Tutin, na Sérvia. Os participantes responderam questionários e fizeram testes apropriados. Resultados: Nossos resultados mostraram que não há associação entre dependência do exercício e situação financeira, número de irmãos, grau de escolaridade, estabilidade familiar, saúde e uso de medicação nos entrevistados. Contudo, verificou-se que grau de dependência do exercício é associado ao estado civil e a problemas com a lei. A análise de regressão mostrou que dismorfia corporal, índice de massa corporal e agressividade são preditores melhores de dependência de exercício. Conclusão: As pessoas cuja autopercepção é de dismorfia têm um nível mais baixo de autoestima e fazem exercícios na academia visando melhorar a aparência física. Se considerarmos outras características, tais como IMC desfavorável, problemas com a lei e ser solteiro, não é de estranhar que ultrapassem a linha entre o exercício saudável e a dependência do exercício. Um achado importante é que a agressividade e a dependência do exercício estão relacionadas com problemas com a lei decorrentes de agressão e dismorfia corporal. Métodos: La muestra fue compuesta por 103 hombres (media de edad 27,3 años, DE 6,127) que hacían ejercicios en gimnasios por lo menos tres veces por semana en el último año o más, en Novi Pazar, Sjenica, Raska y Tutin, en Serbia. Los participantes respondieron cuestionarios e hicieron pruebas apropiadas. Resultados: Nuestros resultados mostraron que no hay asociación entre dependencia del ejercicio y situación financiera, número de hermanos, grado de escolaridad, estabilidad familiar, salud y uso de medicación en los entrevistados. Sin embargo, se verificó que el grado de dependencia del ejercicio se asocia al estado civil y a los problemas con la ley. El análisis de regresión ha demostrado que el dismorfismo corporal, el índice de masa corporal y la agresividad son predictores mejores de dependencia de ejercicio. Conclusión: Las personas cuya auto percepción es de dismorfismo tienen un nivel más bajo de autoestima y hacen ejercicios en el gimnasio para mejorar la apariencia física. Si consideramos otras características, como el IMC desfavorable, problemas con la ley y ser soltero, no es sorprendente que sobrepasen la línea entre el ejercicio saludable y la dependencia del ejercicio. Un hallazgo importante es que la agresividad y la dependencia del ejercicio están relacionados con problemas con la ley derivadas de agresión y dismorfismo corporal. Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune, inflammatory and chronic disease that may lead to loss of muscle mass, muscle strength and decreased functionality. Our objectives are to assess the quadriceps muscle morphology by ultrasound (MU) and verify its associations with clinical features, muscle strength and physical function in RA patients. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, RA women (≥18 years) were included. Morphological parameters in quadriceps muscle consisted of the muscle thickness and pennation angle of rectus femoris (RF), vastus intermedius (VI) and vastus lateralis (VL). RA activity was measured by a 28-joint disease activity score (DAS28), muscle strength by handgrip and chair stand tests, and physical function by health assessment questionnaire (HAQ), timed-up-and-go (TUG) test and short physical performance battery (SPPB). Results: Fifty-five patients were included (age: 56.73 ± 9.46 years, DAS28: 3.08 ± 1.29). Muscle thickness in RF, VI and VL were negatively associated with age (RF, p &lt, 0.001, VI, p = 0.013, VL, p = 0.002) and disease duration (RF, p &lt, VI, p = 0.005, VL, p = 0.001), and were positively associated with handgrip strength (RF, p = 0.015, VI, p = 0.022, VL, p = 0.013). In addition, decreased muscle thickness in VI (p = 0.035) and a smaller pennation angle in RF (p = 0.030) were associated with higher DAS-28 scores. Conclusion: Quadriceps muscle morphology by ultrasound appears to be affected by age, disease duration, disease activity and muscle strength in patients with RA. MU can be a useful method to evaluate the impact of the disease on skeletal muscle.

Introducción. La termografía infrarroja (TI) es un equipo de imagen que capta las radiaciones de calor emitidas por los cuerpos y las recoge en valores de temperatura. En el ámbito deportivo se utiliza para identificar daños en estructuras músculo-esqueléticas a partir de la variación de la temperatura corporal en zonas anatómicas afectadas.Objetivo. Valorar la efectividad de la TI como herramienta para detectar músculos dañados después de correr una maratón.Materiales y métodos. Se evaluaron 17 corredores antes y después de correr una maratón (42.196 km) utilizando un equipo termográfíco.Resultados. Se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre la temperatura previa y posterior a correr una maratón. Se presentó una diferencia entre la medición previa y posterior 1°C en el vasto lateral, vasto medial, recto femoral y aductor de la pierna dominante, lo que, basados en parámetros clínicos, representa un daño en estos músculos. Los aumentos de temperatura se mostraron de manera heterogénea entre las zonas anatómicas.Conclusiones. La TI es una herramienta efectiva para detectar zonas musculares dañadas en corredores después de participar en una maratón. Introduction: Infrared thermography (IT) is an imaging technique that detects heat radiation emitted by an object and collects it to convert it into temperature values. In sports, it is used to identify damage to musculoskeletal structures based on the variation of body temperature in affected anatomical areas.Objective: To assess the effectiveness of IT as a tool to detect damaged muscles after running a marathon.Materials and methods: 17 runners were assessed before and after running a marathon (42.196 km) using thermographic equipment.Results: Statistically significant temperature differences were found before and after running a marathon. There was a difference between previous and posterior measurement 1°C in the vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, rectus femoris and adductor of the dominant leg, which, based on clinical parameters, indicates damage in these muscles. Increases in temperature were heterogeneous among anatomical areas.Conclusions: IT is an effective tool for detecting damaged muscle areas in runners after participating in a marathon.

Aim This study investigated the associations between fitness indices and bone outcomes in young males. Methods Data were collected between autumn and winter 2014-2015 on 121 males with a mean age of 13.1 ±0.1 years: 41 swimmers, 37 footballers, 29 cyclists and 14 non-athletes. Participants were recruited from athletic clubs and schools across South West England. Lean mass, areal bone mineral density and hip structural estimates were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The relationships between bone outcomes and the vertical jump, standing long jump and the 20m shuttle run test were analysed using three regression models: model one was adjusted by age and stature, model two added vigorous physical activity and model three then added lean mass. Results The boys’ performance in the vertical jump and standing long jump was positively associated with the majority of bone outcomes in models one and two, but most of these disappeared in model three. The 20m shuttle run test was positively associated with most bone outcomes in all three models. Lean mass played a key role in the association between muscular fitness and bone outcomes. Conclusion Vigorous physical activity did not explain the associations between fitness and bone outcomes, but lean mass did. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Purpose: To compare the functional result of standart vein grafts and inside-out vein graft technique on sciatic nerve repair. Methods: We used 24 male Wistar rats divided into 4 groups: control group (CG), standard vein graft group (SVG), Inside-out vein graft group (IOVG) and denervated Group (DG). SVG, IOVG and DG underwent total section of the sciatic nerve, SVG and IOVG however underwent nerve repair surgery using a graft with normal jugular vein and inside-out jugular vein, respectively. Histological analysis of the soleus and Extensor Digitorum Longus (EDL), and Sciatic Functional Index were used to compare the results after 6 weeks. Results: Both grafts acted favorably in muscle recovery and improved functionality; They were similar in all parameters, however, in more points SVG achieved similar to the CG, in the other hand IOVG more times was similar to DG. Fact that makes the graft with normal vein the most viable option between the two options. Conclusion: Both types of grafts acted beneficially wherein the graft normal vein has proved to be the best option

Ultrasound muscle images have been extensively used as tools for investigating, diagnosing and monitoring thigh muscles. However, there is a lack of information examining ultrasound reliability of quadriceps and hamstrings images for research and clinical use. Objectives: To determine the reliability of muscle thickness (MT), echo intensity (EI) and cross sectional area (CSA) of quadriceps and hamstrings muscle groups. Methods: Single transverse images of the rectus femoris (RF), vastus intermedius (VI), vastus medialis (VM), vastus lateralis (VL), biceps femoris long head (BFlh), semitendinosus (ST), and semimembranosus (SM) muscles were scanned in the right and left legs of ten healthy collegiate men (age 23.4 ± 2.2 yrs, mass 71.7 ± 11.7 kg, height 1.73 ± 0.06 m) between two sessions with one day interval. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), standard error of measurement (SEM), and minimum difference to be considered “real” (MD) were measured for MT, EI, and CSA. Results: A range of 0.97-0.99, 0.83-0.88, and 0.86-0.97 (ICC); 0.72-1.38, 2.73-3.41, and 0.36-1.04 (SEM); and 2.01-3.82, 7.56-9.46, and 0.99-2.89 (MD) were found for quadriceps muscles, and 0.93-0.99, 0.74-0.90, and 0.89-0.96 (ICC); 0.73-1.94, 3.29-4.98, and 0.69-1.08 (SEM); and 2.03-5.38, 9.13-13.81, and 1.91-2.98 (MD) were found for hamstrings muscles. Conclusions: These results suggest that ultrasound imaging of both quadriceps and hamstrings muscle architecture is a reliable technique for assessing thigh musculoskeletal tissue. The anatomical sites, as well as ultrasound adjustments, images, and results utilized here may assist future researchers and clinicians as reference tools when measuring quadriceps and hamstrings musculature.

Studies on the cephalic myology of snakes provide a series of relevant data on their biology and systematics. Despite the great amount of descriptive studies currently available for the group, much of the knowledge remains obscure for most scolecophidian taxa. This study aimed to describe in detail the cephalic (head and neck) myology of members of the tribe Epictinae, Leptotyphlopidae. We provide the first report of the presence of extrinsic ocular muscles, and a double Musculus pterygoideus acessorius in Leptotyphlopidae. A well-developed M. levator anguli oris is exclusive to the subtribes Renina and Epictina, being reduced in Tetracheilostomina species. Both inter- and intraspecific variations are reported for the head and neck muscles, and such results provide additional data and raise an interesting discussion on the neck-trunk boundaries in snakes. We also provide a discussion on the terminology of a few head muscles in Leptoyphlopidae in comparison to the other lineages of ´Scolecophidia´ (Anomalepididae and Typhlopoidea).

Background and Objectives: Rugby players engage in demanding, high loading muscular activity in the spine. Study of the abdominal wall architecture in female rugby athletes is relevant to the possible muscular asymmetry secondary to sport practice and the relationship between the abdominal wall and the pelvic floor muscles. Activation of the transversus abdominis (TrAb) generates an increase in the bladder neck muscle. Moreover, an increased interrecti distance (IRD) is related to urinary incontinence and has a higher prevalence in athletic women. The aim of the present study was to compare and quantify, with ultrasound imaging (USI), the thickness of the transversus abdominis (TrAb), external oblique (EO), internal oblique (IO), rectus abdominis (RA), and interrecti distance (IRD) in female rugby players versus non-athletic women in order to improve upon existing knowledge about abdominal wall configuration in female athletes. Materials and Methods: A sample of 32 women was recruited at the Universidad Europea Research Lab and divided in two groups: a rugby group (n = 16) and a non-athletic women group (n = 16). The thickness of the TrAb, EO, IO, RA, and IRD were assessed by USI in both groups. Results: There were statistically significant differences for the ultrasound evaluation thickness of the right TrAb (p = 0.011, d = 0.10), EO (p = 0.045, d = 0.74), IO (p = 0.003, d = 1.32), and RA (p = 0.001, d = 1.38) showing a thickness increase for the rugby group with respect to the control group. For the IRD thickness, there were no significant differences (p &gt, 0.05) between groups. Conclusions: An increased TrAb, IO, EO, and RA thickness may be shown in female rugby players versus non-athletic women. Nevertheless, statistically relevant differences were not found for the IRD between both groups.

Se realizó un estudio epidemiológico descriptivo, observacional y retrospectivo, analizando la incidencia y las características de las lesiones sufridas por jugadores de pádel españoles profesionales y no profesionales. Se registraron las lesiones sufridas por 478 jugadores entre el 1 de enero y el 31 de diciembre de 2016. Se registraron datos sobre el número de lesiones, lesiones más frecuentes, distribución, tipo, ubicación, el momento en que ocurrieron y la causa de las lesiones que afectan el sistema locomotor. La tasa de lesiones en esta población fue de 2,75 lesiones por 1000 horas de exposición al riesgo. Las lesiones leves y aquellas con mecanismos de lesión intrínseca fueron las más frecuentes, y tuvieron lugar el final de la práctica deportiva. La extremidad inferior fue el área corporal más lesionada, y el tejido más lesionado fue el sistema musculo-tendinoso. A su vez, la epicondilitis fue la patología más común, An epidemiological study was conducted using retrospective, observational and descriptive methodologies. We sought to analyse the incidence and features of injuries sustained by professional and non-professional Spanish Padel players. In total, 478 injuries were registered in 2016 from January 1st to December 31st. We collected data on the number of injuries, the most frequent injuries, their distribution, type, location, the moment at which these occurred and the cause of the injuries affecting the locomotor system. We found that the injury rate in this population was 2.75 injuries per 1000 hours of risk exposure. The most frequent injuries were those which were mild or with mechanisms of intrinsic injury, and most occurred towards the end any given game or practice. The aim of this paper is to analyze muscle load-sharing in patients with Lateral Epicondylitis during dynamic endurance contractions by means of non-linear prediction of surface EMG signals. The proposed non-linear cross-prediction scheme was used to predict the envelope of an EMG signal and is based on locally linear models built in a lag-embedded Euclidean space. The results were compared with a co-activation index, a common measure based on the activation of a muscle pair. Non-linear prediction revealed changes in muscle coupling, that is load-sharing, over time both in a control group and Lateral Epicondylitis (p < 0.05), even when subjects did not report pain at the end of the exercise. These changes were more pronounced in patients, especially in the first part of the exercise and up to 50% of the total endurance time (p < 0.05). By contrast, the co-activation index showed no differences between groups. Results reflect the changing nature of muscular activation strategy, presumably because of the mechanisms triggered by fatigue. Scoliosis is characterized by three-dimensional changes of the spine and is estimated to be present in 4% of the population worldwide. The most common form is the adolescent idiopathic. The purpose of this study is to identify the major muscle abnormalities found in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis through a literature review. We conducted an electronic search of the national databases PubMed, Lilacs, PEDro, and EMBASE using the keywords "scoliosis", "biomechanics", "exercise", "physical therapy specialty", "idiopathic", and "muscles", from January 2003 to April 2015. The most relevant articles in English, Portuguese and Spanish were selected by title and abstract. It was also performed a manual search of the references of the selected articles. From a total of 4,319 articles, 11 were selected. We conclude that individuals with AIS have changes in the paraspinal muscles, with a difference in activation between the concave and convex sides, suggesting an increase in EMG activity on the convex side, although there is still no consensus among the authors. Resumo: Objetivou-se descrever os músculos do membro torácico da paca (Cuniculus paca Linnaeus, 1766), mediante dissecação anatômica dessa região. Foram utilizadas cinco Cuniculus paca adultas, machos e fêmeas, pesando entre cinco e 10kg do plantel de pacas do setor de Animais Silvestres da FCAV, Unesp, Jaboticabal/SP. Os animais foram fixados em formoldeído a 10% e conservados em solução salina a 30% para dissecação anatômica da musculatura do ombro, braço e antebraço, identificando-se a origem e inserção de cada músculo. Os resultados foram fotodocumentados e discutidos com base na literatura sobre animais domésticos, ratos e cobaias. Salvo algumas variâncias na origem e inserção de cada músculo e na fusão dos ventres de alguns grupos musculares, de forma geral, a musculatura do ombro, braço e antebraço da paca assemelha-se a dos animais domésticos e a de outros roedores. Abstract: The objective was to describe the forelimb muscles of paca (Cuniculus paca Linnaeus, 1766), by anatomical dissection of this region. Five adult male and female C. paca, weighing 5-10kg, from the Department of Wild Animals, FCAV-Unesp, Jaboticabal/SP, were used. The animals were fixed in formaldehyde 10% and stored in saline 30% for anatomic dissection of the muscles of shoulder, arm and forearm, identifying the origin and insertion of each muscle. The results were photodocumented and discussed based on the literature of domestic animals, rats and guinea pigs. Unless some variances in the origin and insertion of each muscle and fusion of bellies of some muscle groups, in general, the muscles of shoulder, arm and forearm of paca resemble the ones of domestic animals and other rodents.

Introduction: Evaluate the association between the thumb adductor muscle thickness and the patient's nutritional status, and propose cutoff points for muscle mass depletion in elderly patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) under conservative treatment. Epidemiological and cross-sectional study, including patients with CKD stages 3 to 5, older than 60 years. Socioeconomic, clinical, physical activity and anthropometric data was obtained. TAMT was described and compared according to CKD stage, socioeconomic data, physical activity, nutritional status and correlated with age, glomerular filtration rate and anthropometric variables. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves were produced, considering the lean tissue index classification as reference. The cut-off point was defined by the Youden index. This study investigated (1) the in vivo and in vitro effects of AGEs on Slc2 alpha 4/GLUT4 expression in skeletal muscle of healthy rats, and (2) the potential involvement of endoplasmic reticulum and inflammatory stress in the observed regulations. For in vivo analysis, rats were treated with advanced glycated rat albumin (AGE-albumin) for 12 weeks; for in vitro analysis, soleus muscles from normal rats were incubated with bovine AGE-albumin for 2.5 to 7.5 hours. In vivo, AGE-albumin induced whole-body insulin resistance; decreased (similar to 30%) Slc2 alpha 4 mRNA and GLUT4 protein content; and increased (similar to 30%) the nuclear content of nuclear factor NF-kappa-B p50 subunit (NFKB1), and cellular content of 78 kDa glucose-regulated protein (GRP78). In vitro, incubation with AGE-albumin decreased (similar to 50%) the Slc2 alpha 4/GLUT4 content; and increased cellular content of GRP78/94, phosphorylated-IKK-alpha/beta, nuclear content of NFKB1 and RELA, and the nuclear protein binding into Slc2 alpha 4 promoter NFKB-binding site. The data reveal that AGEs impair glucose homeostasis in non-diabetic states of increased AGEs concentration; an effect that involves activation of endoplasmic reticulum-and inflammatory-stress and repression of Slc2 alpha 4/GLUT4 expression. The shoulder is susceptible to disturbances caused by microtraumas due to direct contact of the surrounding skeletal structures or failure of the soft parts of the rotator cuff and other muscles inserted into the gle-nohumeral joint. The purpose of the study was to compare the electro-myographic signal in the stabilizing muscles of the shoulder during the diagonal elevation exercise as recommended by the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) method and dumbbell exercise. This study is classified as Quase-experiment. Subjects were instructed to perform diagonal standard exercises and the electromyographic signal was detected from pectoralis muscles, middle and upper trapezius of dominant limb in each subject. Aims Sestrins, a class of stress-related proteins, is involved in the control of aging-induced organic dysfunctions and metabolic control. However, the factors that modulate the levels of Sestrins are poorly studied. Here, we evaluated the effects of acute and chronic aerobic exercise on Sestrin 1 (Sesn1) and Sesn2 protein contents in the skeletal muscle of mice. Main methods Male C57BL/6 J mice performed an acute or chronic (4 weeks) exercise protocols on a treadmill running at 60% of the peak workload. Then, the quadriceps muscle was removed and analyzed by Western blot. Bioinformatics analysis was also performed to evaluate Sesn1 and Sesn2 mRNA in the skeletal muscle and phenotypic pattern in a large panel of isogenic strains of BXD mice. Key findings While acute aerobic exercise increased Sesn1 accumulation and induced a discrete augment of Sesn2 protein content and AMPK threonine phosphorylation, chronic exercise reduced the basal levels of Sesn1 and Sesn2 as well as of AMPK threonine phosphorylation in the quadriceps muscles of C57BL/6 J mice. In accordance with these experimental approaches, transcriptomic analysis revealed that Sesn1 and Sesn2 mRNA levels in the skeletal muscle were inversely correlated with the locomotor activity in several strains of BXD mice. Significance Our data suggest that physical exercise has role on Sestrin1 and Sestrin2 expression on skeletal muscle, providing new insights into the mechanism by which physical exercise affects stress-related proteins in skeletal muscles.

We used ten adult pacas, males and females, weighing 5 to 10 kg from the group of pacas at the sector of wild animals of FCAV, Unesp-Jaboticabal, SP. The animals were fixed with 10% formaldehyde and preserved in 30% saline solution for anatomical dissection of the pelvis, thigh and leg musculature, with identification of the origin and the insertion of each muscle. Photos were taken and the results were discussed based on the domestic animal, rat and guinea pig literature. In general, the paca musculature resembles the one of domestic animals and other rodents; but some variance in origin and insertion of each muscle and in the fusion of some muscular groups of the bellies was observed.
