Erythroleukaemia is a malignant neoplasm of the erythroid lineage that rarely occurs in cats. It is associated with the feline leukaemia virus (FeLV), and owing to the poor prognosis, treatment is rarely reported. A 4‐year‐old female Korean domestic shorthair cat was presented with hyporexia, fever, lethargy, severe anaemia and rubricytosis. An FeLV antigen test was positive, but a subsequent polymerase chain reaction test was negative. Serum biochemistry analysis results were normal, except for slightly elevated alanine aminotransferase. The patient was tentatively diagnosed with acute erythroleukaemia, and single high‐dose (600 mg/m2) cytarabine chemotherapy was administered via constant rate infusion for 12 h a day for 5 days. After the first cytarabine administration, the clinical signs and anaemia improved, though no change was noted to other haematological parameters. The patient died of shock 16 days after the second cytarabine administration; the total survival time after diagnosis was 67 days. Post‐mortem cytological evaluation of bone marrow aspiration revealed that the myeloid/erythroid ratio was 0.49, the erythroid progenitor cells were 64% of all nucleated cells and the blast cells were 84% of the non‐erythroid cells. Histopathology images indicated that the spleen was diffusely expanded by atypical round cells, possibly erythroid precursors. This is the first case report on the prognosis and effects of high‐dose cytarabine chemotherapy for acute feline erythroleukaemia with FeLV infection. Although the clinical signs improved, the treatment was not effective. Further studies on erythroleukaemia chemotherapy protocols are required., Single high‐dose cytarabine chemotherapy was administered to a patient who was diagnosed with acute erythroleukaemia with feline leukaemia virus infection. The clinical signs and anaemia improved tentatively, and given the grave prognosis of this disease, this treatment might be considered a treatment option for erythroid leukaemia.

Lymphoma is widely recognized in veterinary medicine. However, studies focused on secondary lymphoma after chemotherapy do not exist in veterinary medicine. An 11‐year‐old, spayed female Shih‐Tzu dog was diagnosed with mammary gland carcinoma. Twenty‐five months after carboplatin treatment, the dog developed generalized lymphadenopathy (GL), diagnosed as high‐grade T‐cell lymphoma by immunohistochemistry. Another spayed female Shih‐Tzu dog who was 15‐year‐old had biopsy‐induced gastrointestinal stromal tumour. Three months after being treated with Toceranib, the dog developed GL that was diagnosed by PCR for antigen receptor rearrangement as T‐cell lymphoma. An eight‐year‐old, castrated male Mongrel dog was diagnosed with mast cell tumour. The dog was treated with vinblastine, but 14 months later, GL was revealed. Fine‐needle aspiration indicated lymphoma. The owner declined to investigate the cell lineage. All three dogs developed GL after chemotherapy. We suggest that secondary lymphoma can develop in dogs after chemotherapy for a primary cancer, and thus long‐term follow‐up is necessary., This study presents three cases of canine secondary lymphoma development after chemotherapy for primary cancer. It suggests that long‐term follow up is necessary in cancer patients since secondary lymphoma can be developed after chemotherapy.

A 9-year-old female mixed-breed dog presented with ascending flaccid tetraparesis, and a 5-year-old castrated male Poodle dog presented with ventroflexion of neck, dysphonia, and hindlimb weakness, which progressed to acute ascending tetraparesis. Both dogs were fed raw poultry for over 9 and 5 years, respectively. Blood examination and other test results were normal or unrelated to the present case. Fecal polymerase chain reaction analysis in the Poodle dog was positive for Clostridium perfringens and Campylobacter jejuni. Tetraparesis improved with supportive care in both dogs. Human IV immunoglobulin was only administered to the Poodle dog, which showed a shorter recovery (12 days compared to 34 days in the mixed-breed dog). Both dogs returned to normal conditions eventually.

Objectives As bacterial infection can lead to sepsis and high mortality, early and easy diagnosis of sepsis can improve survival. In cats, the diagnosis of systemic bacterial infection is quite challenging, and, usually, non-specific markers for inflammation are employed. In humans, procalcitonin, heparin-binding protein and absolute neutrophil count are biomarkers that are studied in bacterial infections and sepsis owing to their high sensitivity and specificity. Methods A total of 56 cats were categorised into 16 healthy cats and 40 bacterially infected cats, diagnosed by various examinations. In all cats, serum procalcitonin and heparin-binding protein levels were measured using ELISA and an absolute neutrophil count was performed. Results The median values of procalcitonin levels and absolute neutrophil count were significantly higher in the infection group than in the normal group, but heparin-binding protein levels were not. A procalcitonin level >366 pg/ml was a better biomarker of bacterial infection than heparin-binding protein and absolute neutrophil count (sensitivity: 67.5%; specificity: 93.8%). Procalcitonin was not correlated with heparin-binding protein ( r = 0.213, P = 0.115) and absolute neutrophil count ( r = 0.393, P = 0.003). Conclusions and relevance High procalcitonin levels in cats were associated with bacterial infection. Hence, procalcitonin could be a valuable marker for diagnosing bacterial infections in cats.

A 12‐year‐old female Shih‐tzu dog was presented with a 2‐month history of cutaneous non‐pruritic multiple ulcerated or crusted nodules of less than 1.5 cm in diameter on eyelids, lips, abdomen, groin, thighs and perianal region. Several diagnostic tests were performed, including fine needle aspiration and skin biopsy of the cutaneous nodules. Cytologic interpretation was round cell neoplasm with multilobated (clover‐leaf shaped) nuclei. Histopathology revealed round neoplastic cells with prominent anisocytosis and anisokaryosis, and numerous mitotic figures; however, the origin of the cells was not identified. Immunohistochemical evaluation indicated that these cells were positive for CD79a and MUM‐1, but negative for CD3, CD20 and Pax 5. The patient was treated with chemotherapy, and the skin condition improved. Despite good response to chemotherapy, the patient was euthanized due to poor general health., Cells with multilobated (clover‐leaf shaped) nuclei can be seen on round cell neoplasm, especially plasma cell tumors or cutaneous plasmacytosis on cytology. Immunohistochemical evaluation with CD79a, CD3, CD20, MUM‐1, Pax 5 is indicated to confirm the origin of the cells.

Objective To evaluate the effects of 7.5% hypertonic saline solution (HSS) on whole blood coagulation in healthy dogs and to compare electrolyte and osmolality measurements between in vivo and in vitro dilution with HSS. Design Experimental study. Setting University teaching hospital. Animals Twelve adult purpose-bred Beagles. Interventions All 12 dogs received 5 mL/kg 7.5% HSS at 1 mL/kg/min. After a 14-day washout period, 5 of these dogs were randomly selected and received the same volume of 0.9% NaCl. Blood samples were collected before infusion, immediately after infusion, and at 30, 60, and 90 minutes after infusion for the measurement of coagulation using thromboelastography. For comparison of electrolyte concentrations and osmolality between in vitro dilution and in vivo dilution of HSS, 6-mL blood samples were diluted with 7.5% HSS (1:18 ratio) at baseline. Measurements and main results None of the thromboelastography variables differed significantly between the 7.5% HSS group and the 0.9% NaCl group. The sodium and chloride levels, and the osmolality, were significantly increased at all postinfusion time points compared to baseline, while those levels were significantly higher with in vitro dilution than all postinfusion time points. However, almost all the values gradually decreased and became similar to baseline values in case of in vivo dilution. Conclusions The clinically relevant dose of 7.5% HSS (5 mL/kg) did not affect whole blood coagulation significantly in healthy Beagles. Further studies are necessary to assess the effect of HSS on blood coagulation in canine patients with shock.

Background Diarrhea is one of the most common clinical symptoms in cats and can be caused by infectious pathogens and investigation of the prevalence, co-infection and seasonality of enteropathogens are not well-established in diarrheic cats. Results Fecal samples of 1620 diarrheic cats were collected and enteropathogens were detected using real-time PCR. We retrospectively investigated the clinical features, total/seasonal prevalence, and infection patterns of enteropathogens. The positive infection rate was 82.59%. Bacterial, viral, and protozoal infections accounted for 49.3, 37.57, and 13.13% of cases, respectively. Feline enteric coronavirus (FECV) was the most common pathogen (29.37%), followed by Clostridium (C.) perfringens, Campylobacter (C.) coli, feline parvovirus, and Tritrichomonas foetus. The seasonality of enteropathogens was observed with peaks as follows: bacterial infections peaked in October, viral infections peaked in November, and protozoal infections peaked in August. Viral and protozoal infections showed differences in prevalence according to patient age. In the infection patterns, the ratios of single infections, mixed infections, and co-infections were 35.72, 9.87, and 54.41%, respectively. FECV was predominant in single infections. The most common patterns of multiple infections were C. perfringens and C. coli in mixed infections and C. perfringens and FECV in co-infections. Conclusions Infection patterns differed according to the enteropathogen species, seasonality, and age distribution in cats. The results of this study might be helpful to understand in clinical characteristics of feline infectious diarrhea. In addition, continued monitoring of feline enteropathogens is required.

Objective: We performed a randomized two-way crossover study to evaluate the pharmacokinetic profiles of two high-dose ascorbic acid (AA) after IV infusion in healthy beagle dogs. Materials and Methods: The dogs were administered IV AA at two doses of 1.5 and 3 gm/kg for 4 h, and the AA concentration in plasma and urine pH was measured before and after administration. Results: The plasma concentrations of AA in both groups peaked 3 h after administration. Among the two groups, the urine pH was not significantly different (p = 0.12990.7944). High-dose IV AA did not induce serious adverse events in dogs. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the high dose of AA which reaches the therapeutic dose for cancer and supports the safety of high-dose IV AA in dogs. Background Dogs treated for naturally occurring hyperadrenocorticism (NOH) in Korea often appear to require higher doses of trilostane than recommended by authors in the United States, Europe, or the United Kingdom. This phenomenon may be related to compounding trilostane into packets, which is a common practice among veterinary clinics in Korea. Objective Analyze packets filled by hand and others filled using a semi-automatic packing device for accuracy of trilostane strength. Animals Medication packets prepared for 3 dogs with preexisting prescriptions for NOH were analyzed. Method A trilostane assay was developed for analysis. Trilostane (Vetoryl) capsules were used as clinical controls. Forty-four medication packets containing trilostane (Vetoryl), prepared by 3 clinicians for 3 dogs with NOH were analyzed. Results Of 44 trilostane-containing packets, only 40.9% (18 packets) had acceptable strength of trilostane. Conclusions and clinical importance Clinicians should be aware that compounding trilostane into packets fails to consistently provide measured amounts of trilostane, potentially interfering with response to treatment for NOH in dogs.

Background Stress is associated with various detrimental changes in physiological health that affect an animal’s quality of life. The hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic-adreno-medullar (SAM) axis are two main physiological pathways that constitute the stress response of an organism. Arginine vasopressin (AVP) is a mediator of the HPA axis and is known to be related to social behaviours and stress. The serum concentration of AVP is higher in more aggressive dogs and humans with post-traumatic stress disorder. Salivary biomarker analysis is a non-invasive method to assess stress. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possibility of using salivary AVP as an acute stress biomarker in dogs. Salivary AVP concentration was measured before and after exposure to all relevant environmental stimuli (i.e. car trip to the lab, physical examination by the veterinarian, and sampling procedure,) and then after 30 min of vacuum noise exposure. Behavioural assessments, physiologic parameter assessments, and serum cortisol analysis were conducted in combination. Statistical analysis was conducted separately in the total study population, the less stressed group, and the more stressed group, respectively. Results Based on stress behaviour analysis scores, 28 dogs were classified into less or more stressed groups. All four physiologic parameters (blood pressure, body temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate) were significantly increased after noise and environmental challenges, in the more stressed group. Serum cortisol did not show any significant change. Salivary AVP significantly decreased after noise and environmental stimulation in the more stressed group but not in the less stressed group. Salivary AVP and blood pressure changes were negatively correlated in the more stressed group. Conclusion Salivary AVP may be a potential acute stress biomarker in dogs.

Background As a co-receptor for fibroblast growth factor 23, klotho plays a pivotal role in phosphate metabolism. The kidney is known to be the main source of soluble alpha-klotho and the principal regulator of its concentration. Previous studies in human participants showed that the concentration of soluble alpha-klotho in serum and urine decreased in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. However, no previous study has assessed soluble alpha-klotho levels in dogs. This study aimed to measure serum and urinary alpha-klotho levels in CKD dogs and identify their associations with International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) CKD stages and other parameters known to be associated with CKD. Results Serum and urinary alpha klotho concentrations were measured by a commercially available canine-specific sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit and compared between groups by a nonparametric Kruskal–Wallis test. Spearman’s correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the relationships between variables. A stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed to estimate the effects of independent predictors on klotho concentrations. The urine klotho-to-creatinine ratio (UrKl/Cr) was significantly lower in stage 3 dogs than the control group and was significantly lower in dogs with stage 3 and 4 CKD than in those with stage 1 and 2 disease. UrKl/Cr was negatively correlated with serum symmetric dimethylarginine (sSDMA), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, and phosphorus concentration. Serum alpha-klotho concentration in dogs with stages 2 and 3 CKD was significantly lower than those in the control group. There was no significant correlation between serum alpha-klotho and BUN, creatinine, and phosphorus concentrations. No statistically significant differences were observed in UrKl/Cr and serum alpha-klotho concentration between groups based on sex, age, urine protein-to-creatinine ratio (UPC), or blood pressure. Conclusions UrKl/Cr decreased in dogs with advanced CKD, and it was negatively correlated with sSDMA, BUN, creatinine, and phosphorus concentrations. Thus, klotho is associated with CKD and its clinical consequences, including CKD-mineral bone disorder, in dogs. Although serum klotho concentration was negatively correlated with sSDMA levels, it was not apparently related to IRIS CKD stage or other parameters known to be associated with CKD.

Canine mammary gland tumour (cMGT) is the most common tumour in intact female dogs. Surgery is the only effective treatment for cMGT, and dogs with metastasis at the time of diagnosis or those diagnosed at an advanced stage have poorer prognosis. Thus, novel diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets are needed. Neurokinin‐1 receptor (NK‐1 receptor) is involved in cancer progression and has been detected in various malignant tumours including breast cancer in humans. Furthermore, NK‐1 receptor antagonists inhibit cancer progression. We evaluated NK‐1 receptor expression in malignant and benign cMGT compared with that in normal mammary gland tissues and analysed the relationship between the expression of NK‐1 receptor and histopathological type or malignancy grade. Specimens from 34 malignant MGT and 35 benign MGT cases were used for immunohistochemistry and scored according to intensity and percentage. Healthy margins from each tumour were used as internal controls. The scores for NK‐1 receptor intensity, percentage of positive cells and overall immunohistochemistry were higher in malignant MGT than in benign MGT and normal tissue (p, In this study, NK‐1 receptor expression was evaluated in canine mammary gland tumor (cMGT) by immunohistochemistry. and the correlation of the NK‐1 receptor with malignancy grade and histopathological type was analyzed.

Background Although the demand for esomeprazole is increasing in veterinary medicine, the pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics of esomeprazole have been described in only a few studies. Objective To determine the PK of 0.5 and 1 mg/kg esomeprazole administered IV q12h and to investigate its effects on intragastric pH in healthy dogs. Animals Six adult Beagles. Methods Open-label, randomized, and crossover design. The dogs received 0.5 or 1 mg/kg esomeprazole IV q12h for 48 hours. Plasma concentrations of esomeprazole were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Intragastric pH was determined using the Bravo pH monitoring system and recorded as mean percentage time (MPT) for which pH was ≥3 and ≥4 for 24 hours in each group. Results The peak plasma concentration and area under the curve from the time of dosing to the last measurable concentration in the 1 mg/kg group were higher than those in the 0.5 mg/kg group. However, when the dosage normalized, intergroup differences were not significant. The MPTs for which intragastric pH was ≥3 and ≥4 for 48 hours were 88% ± 7% and 81% ± 9% for the 0.5 mg/kg group and 90% ± 9% and 85% ± 11% for the 1 mg/kg group, respectively, with no significant intergroup differences. Conclusions and clinical importance The pharmacokinetic parameters and acid suppressant effect for 0.5 and 1 mg/kg esomeprazole were not significantly different. Furthermore, the efficacy of esomeprazole 0.5 mg/kg IV q12h was sufficient to increase intragastric pH in Beagles.

The use of the well-known powerful antioxidant ascorbate has recently become more widespread in human medicine. Intravenous administration of high-dose ascorbate has been demonstrated to exert anticancer effects. It has resulted in effective cell death in vitro and inhibition of tumour growth in vivo. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effects of high-dose ascorbate on canine melanoma in vitro. Four canine melanoma cell lines, UCDK9M1, UCDK9M3, UCDK9M4 and UCDK9M5 were treated with ascorbate for 2 hours at a range of millimolar concentrations (0-20 mM) to investigate the resulting effects on cell viability. All four canine melanoma cell lines exhibited reduced viability in a dose-dependent manner. Further investigation demonstrated that high-dose ascorbate induced apoptosis via the activation of Bax. These findings suggest that high-dose ascorbate has an anticancer effect on canine melanoma cell lines in vitro. With regard to clinical application, further in vivo investigation should be conducted.

Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of two differently sized butterfly catheter needles and the effect of venepuncture difficulty on thromboelastography (TEG) results in healthy cats. Methods Twenty-four healthy cats were included. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein by syringe aspiration via direct venepuncture with 21 G and 22 G butterfly needles. The venepuncture difficulty score was classified into four categories. The first 1.5 ml blood drawn from each subject was discarded before collecting a sample for TEG analysis. TEG analyses were performed on citrated whole blood samples from 17 clinically healthy cats, using assays with kaolin as activators. Among the TEG parameters, reaction time (R), clot formation time (κ), alpha angle (α), maximum amplitude (MA) and global clot strength (G) were recorded from each tracing. Results Seven cats were excluded from the study; results were obtained for the remaining 17 cats. There were no statistically significant differences between the use of two different needles for R ( P = 0.72), κ ( P = 0.74), α ( P = 0.99), MA ( P = 0.08) and G ( P = 0.09). Samples with difficulty scores ⩾1 were not significantly different from samples with difficulty scores of 0 for R ( P = 0.24), κ ( P = 0.65), α ( P = 0.65), MA ( P = 0.72) and G ( P = 0.77). Conclusions and relevance The results of TEG in clinically healthy cats do not differ significantly when using two different gauge needles. There was no significant difference in the TEG results according to venepuncture difficulty scoring.

Three aged dogs, all over 15 years old, with multiple seizure events and various neurologic signs such as head turn and ataxia were brought to the referring hospital. Two cases were tentatively diagnosed with intracranial meningioma based on magnetic resonance imaging, and one case was histopathologically confirmed as meningioma at necropsy. All dogs improved after initiation of pulsed high-dose hydroxyurea (HU) treatment. Clinical sign relapses were managed by repeating high-dose HU without obvious side effects. Pulsed high-dose HU can be applied when clinical signs are refractory to the traditionally recommended dosage for intracranial meningioma in dogs.

Canine coronavirus is a single-stranded RNA virus that causes enteritis in dogs of any age. Coronaviral enteritis is seldom definitively diagnosed, since it is usually much less severe than many other types of enteritis and is self-limiting. Conventional diagnostics for the canine coronaviral enteritis such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR), virus isolation, and electron microscopic examination are inappropriate for small animal clinics due to the complicated experimental processes involved. Therefore, a commercially available lateral flow test kit based on chromatographic immunoassay techniques was tested to evaluate its performance as a first-line diagnostic test kit that could be used in clinics. The coronavirus antigen test kit detected canine coronavirus-infected dogs with 93.1% sensitivity and 97.5% specificity. The detection limit of the test kit was between 1.97 × 104/mL and 9.85 × 103/mL for samples with a 2- fold serial dilution from 1.25 × 106 TCID50 (TCID50, 50% tissue culture infectious dose). Additionally, the test kit had no cross-reactivity with canine parvovirus, distemper virus, or Escherichia coli. Overall, the commercially available test kit showed good diagnostic performance in a clinical setting, with results similar to those from PCR, confirming their potential for convenient and accurate use in small animal clinics.

Objective To evaluate nafamostat mesilate (NM) as an alternative anticoagulant agent for intermittent hemodialysis (IHD). Design Prospective randomized study. Setting University teaching hospital. Animals Eighteen healthy Beagle dogs. Interventions In group 1 (n = 6), NM was administered at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg/h during IHD for 5 hours. In group 2 (n = 6), NM was administered at a low dose of 0.25 mg/kg/h during IHD. In group 3 (n = 6), which was the control group, unfractionated heparin (UFH) was administered during IHD. The evaluated parameters included: the amount of residual blood clots in the blood chamber and arterial side of the dialyzer; the levels of hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelets; and the prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), and activated clotting time (ACT). Measurements and main results Groups 1 and 2 successfully completed IHD without serious coagulation in the extracorporeal circulation. The residual blood clotting in the blood chamber and arterial side of the dialyzer did not significantly differ in groups 1 and 2 compared to group 3 (group 1 vs group 3, P = 1.000; and group 2 vs group 3, P = 1.000). No significant differences were observed between pre- and posttreatment PTs in groups 1 (P = 0.476) and 2 (P = 0.597), between pre- and posttreatment aPTTs in groups 1 (P = 0.983) and 2 (P = 0.977), and between pre- and posttreatment ACT in groups 1 (P = 0.282) and 2 (P = 0.401). In group 3, a significant elevation of ACT was observed at the posttest (P Conclusions The results of this study in healthy Beagle dogs suggest that NM at 0.25 mg/kg/h may be a valid alternative to UFH for IHD. Further studies are needed in patients at high risk of bleeding.

Thromboembolic complications are increasing in veterinary medicine. Thromboelastography (TEG) is a more comprehensive method for assessing the clotting process than standard plasma-based coagulation tests. This study compared the ability of TEG and standard coagulation tests to analyze the overall hemostatic state of dogs. The study involved 40 dogs with underlying diseases that predispose to hypercoagulability, including neoplasia, hyperadrenocorticism, immune-mediated diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, and protein-losing nephropathies and enteropathies, and 20 healthy dogs. Their overall hemostatic functional state was evaluated by TEG and routine coagulation assays, including activated partial thromboplastin time, prothrombin time, platelet count, and D-dimer concentration. TEG analysis showed significant differences in clot formation time, α angle, and maximum amplitude (MA) between diseased and control dogs (P ＜ 0.001 each). Increased MA was the most frequent abnormality on TEG and was indicative of hypercoagulability. TEG was useful in detecting hemostatic dysfunction in dogs with diseases associated with hypercoagulability. Dogs with TEG tracings indicative of hypercoagulability are likely to be in procoagulant states. Future prospective studies are needed to evaluate whether TEG tracings indicative of hypercoagulability are predictive of thrombosis in dogs.

A 7-year-old spayed female Shih-tzu dog with 4-month history of anorexia and weight loss was diagnosed with splenic hemangiosarcoma. One week after splenectomy, the dog developed severe, multifocal, coalescing erosive and ulcerative dermatosis with epidermal collarettes and crusts on the dorsal trunk. The dog was prescribed systemic antibiotics comprising cephradine and enrofloxacin postoperatively. Histopathological examination of skin biopsies from haired skin lesions revealed changes consistent with pemphigus foliaceus (PF). Tentative diagnosis for this patient was pemphigus-like drug reaction resulting from cephradine treatment. However, given the dog’s history of hemangiosarcoma, paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP), a rarely reported cancer-related pemphigus in dogs, was also considered for tentative diagnosis. Significant clinical remission of dermal lesions was achieved with four weeks of prednisolone and mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) treatment. Drugs were gradually tapered and eventually discontinued with concurrent reduction of dermal lesions, and no further recurrence was noted.

Background: Esomeprazole is an S-enantiomer of omeprazole that has favorable pharmacokinetics and efficacious acid suppressant properties in humans. However, the pharmacokinetics and effects on intragastric pH of esomeprazole in dogs have not been reported. Objective: To determine the pharmacokinetics of esomeprazole administered via various routes (PK study) and to investigate the effect of esomeprazole on intragastric pH with a Bravo pH monitoring system (PD study). Animals: Seven adult male Beagle dogs and 5 adult male Beagle dogs were used for PK and PD study, respectively. Methods: Both studies used an open, randomized, and crossover design. In the PK study, 7 dogs received intravenous (IV), subcutaneous (SC), and oral doses (PO) of esomeprazole (1 mg/kg). Each treatment period was separated by a washout period of at least 10 days. Esomeprazole plasma concentrations were measured by HPLC/MS/MS. In the efficacy study, intragastric pH was recorded without medication (baseline pH) and following IV, SC, and PO esomeprazole dosing regimens (1 mg/kg) in 5 dogs. Results: The bioavailability of esomeprazole administered as PO enteric-coated granules and as SC injections was 71.4 and 106%, respectively. The half-life was approximately 1 hour. Mean +/- SD percent time intragastric pH was = 3 and = 4 was 58.9 +/- 21.1% and 40.9 +/- 17.3% for IV group, 75.8 +/- 16.4% and 62.7 +/- 17.7% for SC group, 88.2 +/- 8.9% and 82.5 +/- 7.7% for PO group, and 12.5 +/- 3.6% and 3.7 +/- 1.8% for baseline. A 10-year-old, spayed, female Cocker Spaniel was referred to our hospital with a history of a cough and dyspnea. The patient was tentatively diagnosed with a chemodectoma based on clinical features evident on echocardiography and computed tomography. Metronomic chemotherapy utilizing toceranib phosphate as well as medications for congestive heart failure were administered. During the period chemotherapy was administered (nine months from the time of diagnosis), clinical improvement was noted without the development of any adverse effects. However, clinical signs recurred after chemotherapy was discontinued at the owner’s request. When the patient was reevaluated via computed tomography, it was found that the size of the mass had increased. The patient developed severe dyspnea secondary to recurrent pleural effusion and was euthanized 65 days after clinical signs reappeared. A necropsy was performed and the patient was definitively diagnosed with a chemodectoma based on histopathologic and immunohistochemical analysis. This case report describes the clinical application of metronomic chemotherapy with toceranib phosphate, which is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, in the treatment of a chemodectoma. We propose that this treatment may improve the quality of life and result in a prolonged survival time compared to treatment with medications for congestive heart failure alone.

A four-year old, intact male, mixed-breed dog had a history of chronic snoring sound and dyspnea. Based on the results of computed tomography, the patient was diagnosed as nasopharyngeal stenosis. Balloon dilatation in the area of stenosis was performed using a balloon dilator inserted retrograde fashion through the working channel of an endoscope. Clinical signs were relieved but reappeared after 3 weeks. Thirty-four days following the first balloon dilatation treatment, a second procedure was performed; the balloon catheter was inserted in antegrade fashion through the left nostril and was filled with contrast agent under fluoroscopic guidance. Because of the relapse of clinical signs after 6 months, the patient received additional balloon dilatation procedure by the antegrade approach. At the oneyear follow-up, the owner said that the clinical signs of nasopharyngeal stenosis had been completely resolved. Balloon dilatation could be a minimally invasive and effective treatment for nasopharyngeal stenosis, although the repetition of the procedure may be required.

A Turkish angora cat with a one-week history of anorexia and vomiting was diagnosed with hepatic lipidosis. During hospitalization and treatment, the cat suddenly showed respiratory-related clinical signs, including coughing and dyspnea, 13 days after initial diagnosis. Due to the poor response to treatment, the patient was euthanized at the owner’s request. A postmortem histopathologic examination of the cat’s heart showed dilation and wall thinning of the right atrium and ventricle, with fibrofatty infiltration corresponding to an arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC). This is a case report of ARVC concurrent with hepatic lipidosis in a cat; both diseases are related to disturbances in lipid metabolism.

Meropenem, a second carbapenem antimicrobial agent with a broad spectrum of activity, is used to treat sepsis and resistant-bacterial infections in veterinary medicine. The objective of this study was to identify the pharmacokinetics of meropenem in dogs receiving intermittent hemodialysis (IHD) and to determine the proper dosing in renal failure patients receiving IHD. Five healthy beagle dogs were given a single i.v. dose of 24 mg/kg of meropenem and received IHD. The blood flow rate, dialysate flow, and ultrafiltration rate were maintained at 40 mL/min, 300 mL/min, and 40 mL/h, respectively. Blood samples were collected for 24 h from the jugular vein and from the extracorporeal arterial and venous line. Urine samples and dialysate were also collected. The concentrations of meropenem were assayed using HPLC/MS/MS determination. The peak plasma concentration was 116 ± 37 μg/mL at 15 min. The systemic clearance was 347 ± 117 mL/h/kg, and the steady-state volume of distribution was 223 ± 67 mL/kg. Dialysis clearance was 71.1 ± 34.3 mL/h/kg, and the extraction ratio by hemodialysis was 0.455 ± 0.150. The half-life (T1/2 ) in dogs with IHD decreased compared with those without IHD, and the reduction in T1/2 was greater in renal failure patients than in normal patients. Sixty-nine percent and 21% of the administered drug were recovered by urine and dialysate in the unchanged form, respectively. In conclusion, additional dosing of 24 mg/kg of meropenem after dialysis could be necessary according to the residual renal function of the patient based on the simulated data.

Simple Summary When collecting blood samples in dogs for evaluating inflammatory conditions, this method is invasive and stressful to dogs. We compared the C-reactive protein (CRP) level in both blood and saliva samples to investigate the non-invasive test method for inflammation. There was a correlation between the blood and saliva CRP levels. This non-invasive test using saliva seems to be a useful method with which to assess inflammatory conditions in dogs. Abstract We performed this study to characterize the difference between the inflammatory and non-inflammatory status in diseased dogs by measuring salivary C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. In addition, we assessed whether a correlation exists between CRP levels in saliva and those in serum. CRP levels were measured in 32 client-owned dogs, which were then divided into inflammation and non-inflammation groups based on the serum CRP level. The salivary CRP level was higher in the inflammation group than in the non-inflammation group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between the salivary and serum CRP levels (R = 0.866, p < 0.001). These data suggest that canine salivary CRP measurements can effectively and non-invasively detect an inflammatory state in dogs.
