Several serum inflammatory biomarkers have been associated with blood pressure and hypertension prevalence in cross-sectional studies. Few of these associations have been evaluated prospectively. We examined associations for 10 serum inflammatory biomarkers with incident hypertension among 471 postmenopausal women (mean age = 65) in the Buffalo OsteoPerio Study. Concentrations of C-reactive protein, interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1, adiponectin, and leptin were measured using multiplexed sandwich immunoassays on fasting serum samples collected at baseline (1997-2001). Incident hypertension (195 cases) was defined as physician-diagnosed hypertension and treatment with medication identified on annual mailed health surveys during follow-up (mean 10 years). Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) between log-transformed biomarkers (per 1-SD) and hypertension. When adjusted for age, leptin was significantly associated with hypertension risk (HR = 1.55, 95% CI: 1.04, 2.29), however, the association was attenuated and not significant after adjustment for demographic and lifestyle factors, including BMI. OBJECTIVES: A possible role of the oral microbiome, specifically oral nitrate reducing flora, in blood pressure (BP) homeostasis, if proven etiologic in nature, could lead to novel mechanism-based therapy to improve hypertension prevention and control. This cross-sectional study characterized and compared the oral microbiome between four study groups based on BP status among 446 postmenopausal women aged 53-82 years. METHODS: Three study groups were not taking hypertension medication and were separated based on BP, as follows: normal BP (systolic 140 or diastolic > 90; N=42). The forth group consisted of anyone taking hypertension medications, regardless of BP (N=119). Subgingival microbiome composition was determined using 16S rRNA sequencing with the Illumina MiSeq platform. Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare species-level relative abundance of bacterial operational taxonomic units across the four groups. RESULTS: Sixty-five bacterial species demonstrated significant differences in relative abundance in women with elevated BP or using hypertension medication as compared to those with normal BP. BACKGROUND: Multiple cross-sectional epidemiologic studies have suggested an association between periodontal disease and tooth loss and hypertension, but the temporality of these associations remains unclear. The objective of our study was to evaluate the association of baseline self-reported periodontal disease and edentulism with incident hypertension. METHODS: Study participants were 36,692 postmenopausal women in the Women’s Health Initiative-Observational Study who were followed annually from initial periodontal assessment (1998–2003) through 2015 (mean follow-up 8.3 years) for newly diagnosed treated hypertension. Background Childhood cancer survivors are at high risk for reduced bone mineral density (BMD). Our objective was to determine whether post-pubertal adolescent survivors of brain tumors, whose tumor or treatments placed them at risk for pituitary hormone deficiencies, have low BMD near time of peak bone mass accrual, and to assess risk factors for decreased BMD. Procedure Chart review of 36 post-pubertal adolescents with history of tumor or radiation therapy (RT) of the hypothalamic–pituitary area who had undergone BMD screening via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Results Age at DXA was 16.9 ± 1.9 years (mean ± SD). Time since diagnosis was 8.5 ± 3.6 years. Median BMD Z scores were –0.95 (range −2.7 to 1.7) at the femoral neck, −1.20 (−3.6 to 1.8) at the hip, and −0.90 (−3.7 to 1.8) at the spine. Bone mineral apparent density (BMAD) Z scores were −0.23 (−2.7 to 1.9) at the femoral neck and −0.45 (−3.0 to 2.3) at the spine. Thyroid hormone is essential for normal mental and physical development in infancy and childhood and is dependent on adequate iodine intake. During the first few months of life, infants are reliant on breastmilk and/or infant formula as their sole sources of dietary iodine. The iodine status of U.S. infants has not been well studied.This was a cross-sectional study of 95 breastfed and/or formula-fed infants less than 3 months of age in the Boston area. We measured iodine content from infants' single spot urine samples and assessed associations with infant feeding type as well as maternal demographic data, salt and multivitamin use, smoking status, and diet.The median infant urine iodine concentration was 197.5 μg/L (range 40-897.5 μg/L). Median infant urine iodine concentrations were similar between infants who were exclusively breastfed (n=39, 203.5 μg/L; range 61.5-395.5 μg/L), formula-fed (n=44, 182.5 μg/L; range 40-897.5 μg/L), and mixed (n=10, 197.8 μg/L; range 123-592.5) (p=0.88). There were no significant correlations of infant urinary iodine with maternal salt or multivitamin use (regularly or in the past 24 hours), active or secondhand cigarette smoke exposures, infant weight, infant length, or recent maternal ingestion of common iodine-containing foods, although the correlations with iodine-containing foods are difficult to accurately determine due to the small sample sizes of these variables.Both breastfed and formula-fed infants less than 3 months of age in the Boston area were generally iodine sufficient. Larger studies are needed to confirm these observations among infants nationwide and elucidate other factors that may contribute to infant iodine nutrition.

Due to the poor prognosis of high-risk (HR) neuroblastoma (NBL), scant data exist on late effects after treatment. Recently, protocols utilizing intense multimodal treatment have resulted in improved long-term survival. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of late effects in survivors of HR NBL. A retrospective review of clinical data for serial patients completing treatment between September 1994 and October 2007 and surviving for at least 1 year was performed. Therapy included aggressive chemotherapy, surgery, radiation and single or tandem SCT. Oncology follow-up was standard; clinical criteria were utilized for referrals to endocrinology and other services. Fifty-one eligible patients were identified. Median follow-up was 6.1 years (range 1.0-15.2). Height was significantly impacted (ΔZ-score -1.91 in those treated with TBI and -0.77 in those without). Pre-diabetes or diabetes, hypothyroidism and ovarian insufficiency were observed in 50, 59 and 75% of at-risk survivors, respectively. Hearing loss and dental issues were common. Nine patients had relapse of NBL; seven died of progressive disease. As there is a high prevalence of late effects in long-term survivors of HR NBL, close monitoring and further studies after treatment are indicated, and in particular after more modern, non-TBI regimens.
