Abstract The extraction of coal seams with high gas content and low permeability presents significant challenges, particularly due to the extended period required for gas extraction to meet safety standards and the inherently low extraction efficiency. Hydraulic fracturing technology, widely employed in the permeability enhancement of soft and low-permeability coal seams, serves as a key intervention. This study focuses on the high-rank raw coal from the No. 13 coal seam at Xinjing Mine, utilizing a vacuum pressure saturation system, low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) testing, and uniaxial compression mechanical testing to investigate the changes in porosity and connectivity of coal samples under conditions of high-pressure continuous immersion and high-low pressure cyclic immersion. Additionally, the uniaxial compression mechanical properties of the coal under various experimental conditions were analyzed. The findings reveal that the porosity of coal samples subjected to high-pressure continuous immersion and high-low pressure cyclic immersion initially decreases slightly before increasing as the immersion cycle progresses. The maximum porosity enhancements observed were 1.55% and 2.93%, respectively, while the total connectivity increased by 19.07% and 24.79%, respectively. Furthermore, The peak stresses of the coal samples were found to be 1.23–1.65 times, 1.65–3.21 times, and 1.56–4.24 times greater than those of the atmospheric-pressure continuous immersion, high-pressure continuous immersion, and high- and low-pressure cyclic immersion samples, respectively. The cyclic application of high and low confining pressures was shown to significantly promote the development of pore structures and enhance pore connectivity, leading to a more pronounced deterioration in coal body strength. These results provide a theoretical foundation and practical support for the application of hydraulic fracturing to improve permeability and the use of water injection to suppress gas outflow in coal seams with high gas content and low permeability within coal mines.

Objective: To foster implementation of genomic testing in medical care by providing a cadre of physicians with 'hands on' experience in genomics, positioning them as opinion leaders in their medical speciality. This paper presents qualitative evaluation of immediate outcomes, in particular its impact on peer interactions., Methods: Program design and delivery was informed by implementation science, behavior change and experiential learning theories. Inductive content analysis of transcribed audio-recordings from semi-structured post-project interviews with all participants (n = 12) was conducted., Results: Participants reported the immersion experience improved their genomic capability, established them as credible genomic experts within their speciality and altered their practice in genomic medicine. Participants reported strengthening and widening of peer-to-peer and interdisciplinary communication, with both passive diffusion and active dissemination of information to peers. Some also became a resource for genetic professionals., Conclusions: Genomic immersion participants described elements which support sustained integration of an innovation, including immediate changes (e.g. use of genomic tests) and wider impacts (e.g. professional networks)., Practice Implications: This study supports a role for immersion as a successful strategy for enhancing engagement of non-geneticist physicians in genomics. Abstract To further elucidate the variations of secondary oxidation spontaneous combustion risk of lignite under different air flows and immersion time. Secondary oxidation experiments of short-term water-immersed coal and long-term water-immersed coal were conducted under four air flows. The results show that, the presence of a temperature inflection point during primary oxidation process, when coal temperature exceeds it, both the oxygen consumption rate and heat release intensity of long-term water-immersed coal are lower, furthermore, decrease in air flow leads to reduction in the temperature inflection point. The oxygen consumption rate and heat release intensity during the primary oxidation process exceed those observed during the subsequent secondary oxidation process. In the secondary oxidation process, long-term water-immersed coal exhibits higher rates of oxygen consumption and heat release intensity compared to short-term water-immersed coal. Additionally, the oxygen-consuming activation energy for oxygen consumption of long-term water-immersed coal is lower. The increase in air flow and water immersion time generally leads to the extreme value of the limit parameters, such as the local maximum of minimal thickness of residual coal and the lower limit oxygen fraction, the local minimum of the maximal air leakage intensity develops in the direction of increasing the risk of spontaneous combustion of coal in goaf.

Abstract Affected by weakening effect of water in the goaf, the bearing capacity of coal pillar reduced, and coal pillar rock burst is prone to occur, which is a serious threat to mine safety in production. In order to study the equivalent width and stability of coal pillar in water-rich coal seam, taking the section coal pillar of a working face as the research object, combined with laboratory test, theoretical analysis, simulation and engineering practice, the stress, elastic core area width, damage degree and energy accumulation of 36 m water-immersed coal pillar and 26 m, 28 m, 30 m, 32 m, 36 m unimmersed coal pillars are analyzed. The research results show that: (1) The reasonable width of coal pillar under flooded and unflooded conditions is 36.09 m and 29.58 m, respectively. The width has been reduced by 6.51 m under flooded condition. The peak stress value in the goaf and the side of the working face and the range of stress curve in the elastic core area are similar between 36 m water-immersed coal pillar and 30 m unimmersed coal pillar. The bearing capacity of the two is equivalent, which is consistent with theoretical analysis. (2) The coupling relationship between flooding and damage of coal pillar can be divided into three stages with the increase of iteration times. Firstly, the flooding area in the early stage of the coal pillar is the damage area caused by the excavation working face, and the flooding rate is fast. Secondly, the mechanical parameters of the coal pillar decrease after water immersion, resulting in the increase of the damage area of the coal pillar. In turn, water permeates into the coal pillar, and the rate of immersion is slower. Finally, the flooded area of the coal pillar remains unchanged from the damaged area. (3) After the 36 m coal pillar was immersed in water, the peak stress of the side coal pillar in the goaf decreased by 7.66%. And as the number of iterations increases, the distance of the coal pillar “wedge” high energy area is gradually shortened. The damage rate experienced three stages: rapid, slow, and stopped increasing. The bearing capacity of coal pillar decreases after water immersion softening (4) The widths of the elastic core areas in the upper, middle and lower parts of the 36 m water-immersed coal pillar and 30 m unimmersed coal pillar are 20, 14.5, 12 m and 18, 14, 11 m respectively, which are relatively close and greater than the critical width of the coal pillar. The actual damage degree of both is greater than the critical damage degree. The elastic strain energy densities of coal pillars are 191 and 187 kJ/m3, respectively, showing wedge-shaped distribution. The carrying capacity of 36 m water-immersed coal pillar and 30 m unimmersed coal pillar is equivalent and stable. (5) Under the geological condition, the energy accumulation and distribution form of coal pillar with a width less than 30 m is “cup-shaped”. The risk of rock burst is higher. When the coal pillar is greater than 30 m, coal pillar energy is distributed in two “wedges”. The stability of coal pillar is enhanced, The risk of rock burst is reduced. The research can provide a reference for determining the reasonable width of section coal pillar in the water-rich rock burst coal seam in Binchang mining area.

This study investigates the cognitive impacts of video game immersion and task interference on immediate and delayed recall as well as recognition tasks. We enrolled 160 subjects aged 18 to 29, who were regular players of “shoot-em-up” video games for at least 3 years. Participants were assigned to one of three experimental groups or a control group. The experimental conditions varied in the timing and type of tasks: the first group performed a video game session between recall tasks, the second group multitasked with video games and recall tasks simultaneously, and the third group engaged in task switching from video games to recall tasks. Using the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, we measured the effects of these conditions on cognitive performance, focusing on error types and recall accuracy. Results indicated that multitasking and task switching significantly affected the subjects’ performance, with notable decrements in recall and recognition accuracy in conditions of high task interference. The study highlights the cognitive costs associated with multitasking in immersive digital games and provides insights into how task similarity and interference might increase error rates and affect memory performance.

Abstract Cold water immersion (CWI) involves rapid cooling of the body, which, in healthy individuals, triggers a defence response to an extreme stimulus, to which the body reacts with stress. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of CWI on hemorheological blood indicators. The study group consisted of 13 young males. Blood samples were collected before and after CWI. The assessed parameters included the complete blood count, fibrinogen, hs-C-reactive protein (CRP), proteinogram, and blood rheology factors, such as erythrocyte elongation index (EI), half-time of total aggregation, and aggregation index. Additionally, the effect of reduced temperature on primary human vascular endothelium was investigated in vitro. CWI resulted in the decrease of body temperature to 31.55 ± 2.87 °C. After CWI, neutrophil count and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were significantly increased in the study group, while lymphocyte count was significantly decreased. Significantly higher levels of total blood protein and albumin concentration were detected after the immersion. Among hemorheological characteristics, erythrocyte EIs at shear stress values ranging from 2.19 to 60.30 Pa were significantly lower after CWI. No significant changes in other rheological, morphological or biochemical parameters were observed. In vitro, human umbilical vein endothelial cells responded to 3 h of temperature decrease to 25 °C with unchanged viability, but increased recruitment of THP-1 monocytic cells and changes in cell morphology were observed. This was the first study to evaluate the effect of single CWI on rheological properties of blood in healthy young men. The results indicate that a single CWI may increase blood protein concentrations and worsen erythrocyte deformability parameters.

Abstract The continuous operation of coal mine underground reservoirs exposes the coal pillar dams to mining disturbances and prolonged water immersion, resulting in the deterioration of coal pillars' mechanical properties and posing a serious threat to the dam stability. To this end, coal samples from the proposed pillar dam in the 5–2 coal seam of Daliuta Mine in Shendong Mining Area were selected for conducting water absorption tests and triaxial compression tests under conditions of repeated water immersion, in order to study the deterioration of the mechanical properties and acoustic emission damage characteristic of coal samples as well as the mechanism behind the deterioration of coal samples under the water–rock interaction. The results indicated that: (1) the saturated water content of coal samples exhibited a progressive increase as the water immersion times increased, but with a diminishing rate of growth. (2) As the water immersion times increased, the compressive strength, cohesive force, and internal friction angle of coal samples gradually decreased. Notably, the deterioration effect was more pronounced in compressive strength and cohesive force, while the decline in internal friction angle was relatively minor, and the total deterioration degree and the stage deterioration degree of the above three had evident cumulativity and non-uniformity. The progressive rise in water immersion times led to a gradual attenuation of the deterioration effect. Meanwhile, the confining pressure exhibited a certain inhibitory impact on the strength deterioration of coal samples. (3) Compared to the dry coal samples, the average AE count rate of coal samples subjected to a single water immersion exhibited a significant decrease, and subsequent water immersion for two, three, and four times resulted in a very minor decrease in the average AE count rate. (4) The AE cumulative ringing counts in coal samples exhibited varying degrees of reduction as water immersion times increased. Specifically, the most significant decrease in AE cumulative ringing counts occurred after the initial water immersion, followed by a gradual decrease thereafter. The energy-releasing capacity of coal samples decreased, while their plasticity exhibited a gradual increase. (5) A damage model was developed for coal samples based on the water immersion times. The model indicated that the damage to coal samples increased as the water immersion times increased, and the damage rate gradually decreased and eventually stabilized. (6) The deterioration mechanism of coals under the water–rock interaction was explained. Through repeated water immersion, the physical, chemical, and mechanical interactions between water and coal induced alterations in the internal microstructure of coal samples, resulting in the deterioration of mechanical properties such as compressive strength, cohesive force, and internal friction angle, which was a cumulative damage process from the microscopic to the macroscopic level.

Introduction: Colour stability of composite materials is an essential property that greatly influences the longevity of dental restorations. Once in the oral cavity, dental materials must provide a stain resistance ability against environmental exposures, such as coffee. This experimental study compares the colour stability of two composite resin materials with differing nanocompositions. Objectives: Analyze the effect of coffee on the colour stability of nanohybrid composites and nanocomposites. Material and Methods: 40 composites discs were utilized in total, with 20 fabricated of an Ormocer-based nanohybrid composite (Admira Fusion) and 20 of a UDMA-based nanocomposite (Normofill nanoceram) in shade A2. 10 discs of each material were then immersed in coffee or water for 12 days. Colour measurements were taken before and after the staining period using a VITA Easyshade spectrophotometer. The colour difference (ΔE) of both composites was calculated using the CIE L*a*b* values. Results: Both Ormocer-based nanohybrid composites (Admira Fusion) and UDMA-based nanocomposites (Normo fill nanoceram) exhibited a colour change after the 12-day period. The UDMA-based nanocomposite (Normo fill nanoceram) exhibited significantly more discolouration compared to the Ormocer-based nanohybrid composite (Admira Fusion). Conclusions: Overall, there was a significant difference in colour generated by immersion in coffee as compared to water. Additionally, the Ormocer-based nanohybrid composite (Admira Fusion) exhibited significantly greater colour stability as compared to the UDMA-based nanocomposite (Normo fill nanoceram).

Abstract Background Exposure to the breadth of healthcare opportunities is crucial to high-school and college students considering a career in medicine. Most programs revolve around research or subspecialties, limiting exposure to the richness within medicine. Objective We conducted a program evaluation of the Stanford Clinical Summer Internship (CSI) 2-week program, to understand learner viewpoints around CSI program utility, and to assess long term impact. We assess viewpoints by learner level (high school versus college) and participation mode (in-person versus virtual). Methods In 2016 we launched a two-week premedical internship, incorporating AAMC core competencies. In 2022 and 2023, we surveyed past participants, collecting demographic data and evaluating/comparing CSI’s impact on educational and career paths, future preferences in healthcare careers, and influential factors of matriculation for high-school and college participants. Results Of 411 past participants, 42% responded (n = 173). We found minimal significant differences between high school and college students. The primary reason for joining was exploring a career in health professions. Notably, 82% acknowledged Stanford-CSI broadened their medical perspectives, 79% gained clarity on healthcare professionals' daily life, 79% heightened their interest in healthcare careers, 71% enhanced their resumes, and 72% learned valuable clinical skills. In-person participants reported developing more friendships (agree/strongly agree: 60% vs 35%, unpaired t-test: p = 0.01), while virtual participants reported having more interest in research careers (40% vs 68%, p = 0.01). Amongst high school matriculants (n = 133), 46% are now in college and 4% in medical or nursing school. Amongst collegiate matriculants (n = 40), 89% have graduated and 11% are now in graduate or medical school. All respondents believed Stanford-CSI was a worthwhile investment of time and resources, with nearly all reporting subsequent increased interest in medicine. Conclusions Stanford-CSI's summer internship gives premedical students real-world medical profession exposure and fosters meaningful connections. Our findings and teaching framework can guide similar program developments, supporting future medical education initiatives.

Key Clinical Message Traditional treatment options are often insufficient in treating severe dry eyes caused by systemic diseases. This case demonstrates that ocular immersion hydrotherapy significantly alleviated symptoms and ocular surface inflammation in ocular graft‐versus‐host disease. Based on these findings, we propose it as a promising option for managing severe dry eye disease. Abstract This case report investigates the efficacy of ocular immersion hydrotherapy (OIH) in treating severe dry eye secondary to ocular graft‐versus‐host disease (oGVHD). A 35‐year‐old female with a history of acute myeloid leukemia‐M2 and subsequent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) developed high‐intensity oGVHD unresponsive to conventional treatments, including topical corticosteroids and lubricants. We introduced OIH, utilizing sterilized swimming goggles filled with intraocular irrigating solutions, providing a moist microenvironment for the ocular surface. Symptoms were significantly relieved after treatment. Corneal filaments and epithelial defects were significantly reduced, and in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) demonstrated resolution of inflammation and reappearance of corneal nerves. This case indicates that OIH could be a promising therapeutic approach for severe dry eye conditions arising from oGVHD, particularly for patients refractory to traditional treatments. Further studies are warranted to elucidate the long‐term benefits and mechanisms of OIH in oGVHD management.

Abstract With the growing popularity of cold brewed coffee comes a need for brewing efficiency while preserving the desirable flavor profile. Despite the wide use of full immersion brewing techniques, the effect of brew time on the dynamic sensory profiles of full immersion brewed coffee remains underexplored. Here, we investigated the relationship between coffee sensory quality and extraction dynamics, measured as Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and Extraction (E) of full immersion brewed coffee at various roast levels, and brewing temperatures (4 °C, 22 °C and 92 °C), over brew time using a generic descriptive analysis method. Specifically, different brew time points were selected for different temperatures based on five targeted coffee extraction stages. Furthermore, the unique experimental design also explored a sensory-driven engineering research process. Roast level had the greatest impact on the sensory profile of the coffees, followed by brewing temperature, but brew time, especially the longer brew times as TDS plateaued, had subtler impacts than expected. Twenty-five of 28 sensory attributes were significantly different among the 30 coffee samples, indicating a single source green coffee blend can produce a wide range of complex sensory profiles using different combinations of roast level, temperature, and brew time. Specifically, the intensity of sweetness was negatively correlated with TDS, and 19 other attribute intensities were positively correlated with TDS. Interestingly, we found that certain long time cold brews had similar sensory profiles to those of some short time hot brews, suggesting the sensory profiles of certain hot brews and cold brews could possibly be matched through controlled preparation. Overall, our study demonstrated an approach of integrating food engineering and sensory analysis for product development, and our findings provide valuable insights into the extraction dynamics and sensory quality of full immersion brewed coffee and opens new brewing avenues for the coffee industry.

Background and Objectives: Formaldehyde is a well-known preservative commonly used to preserve anatomical specimens. However, due to concerns regarding its detrimental effects, phenoxetol has been explored for its role as an immersion agent. Hence, we aim to understand the properties of phenoxetol-based solution when used as an immersion medium for preserving gross anatomy specimens. Materials and Methods: Two sets of specimens were procured from the cadavers embalmed in formalin and one set of specimens was immersed in formalin-based solution and the other set in 1% phenoxetol. Any sloughing, degradation, or presence of mold in the specimen was recorded over 3 years. Microbial cultures were taken from the tissues as well as the immersion solutions. Qualitative feedback regarding the experience of working with the fluids was obtained from the personnel involved in handling the specimens. These specimens were displayed at the end of 3 years to the teaching faculty and the parameters such as the general appearance, consistency to touch, state of degradation, and the ability to differentiate specific structures on the specimen were elicited and statistically analyzed. Results: The parameters such as tissue preservation, haptic and visual properties, and the differentiability of the structures in the specimens were preserved adequately with phenoxetol. Microbial assay from the tissues and the fluid showed no growth. There was no significant negative feedback against its use from the staff handling the specimens. Conclusion: 1% phenoxetol is a good alternative form of immersion medium for anatomical specimens with less toxicity and better environmental impact.

Introduction: With the increasing demand for aesthetics, the popularity of Vacuum-formed Retainers (VFRs) has been on the rise. Bisphenol-A (BPA) is added to the polymers to make them clear and tough. BPA is identified as an endocrine disruptor linked to developmental defects, infertility, cardiovascular disease and cancer. The release of BPA from various orthodontic materials, including VFRs, has been reported infrequently and with variable results. Aim: To assess the effect of immersing VFRs in distilled water on BPA release in the saliva of patients wearing VFRs. Materials and Methods: This was a single-centre prospective randomised clinical trial. A total of 28 patients aged between 15 and 25 years, who had completed their fixed orthodontic treatment in 2021 at Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed to be University (BVDU), Dental College and Hospital, Sangli, Maharashtra, India, were selected for this in-vivo study. Patients were randomly divided into two groups. Group I patients received VFRs without immersion in water before delivery, while Group II patients received VFRs that were immersed in distilled water at 37˚C for 24 hours before delivery. Four samples of unstimulated whole saliva were collected across four different time intervals: T0 (before VFR delivery), T1 (after one hour of wearing retainers), T2 (after one week of wearing retainers) and T3 (after three weeks of wearing retainers). These samples were tested for BPA release using HPLC analysis. Objective(s): This study aimed to investigate the effects of Warm Water Immersion (WWI) on inflammation, kidney function, and kidney tissue damage in rats with diabetes mellitus (DM).Materials and Methods: Forty male rats were divided into four groups: Healthy Control (HC), Diabetic Control (DC), Diabetic Rats treated with WWI (DW), and Healthy Rats treated with WWI (HW). Daily 15-minute WWI sessions at 43 °C were administered for eight weeks. Various parameters including lipids, fasting blood sugar (FBS), HbA1C, insulin, advanced glycation end products (AGEs), HSP70, glomerular filtration rate (GFR), urinary albumin excretion, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), oxidative stress, anti-oxidant parameters, and gene expression of RAGE, VEGF, and TGFß1 were assessed. Histological examination of kidney tissue was also conducted.Results: Significant reductions in FBS, AGEs, glutathione, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and nitric oxide (NO) levels were observed in the DW group compared to DC. Expression of RAGE, VEGF, and TGFß1 genes decreased in DW. Triglycerides, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol were lower in DW. Insulin, HDL cholesterol, catalase, total anti-oxidant capacity (TAC), and tissue HSP70 were higher in DW. Histological assessment revealed reduced kidney damage in DW compared to DC.Conclusion: WWI for eight weeks shows promise in mitigating diabetic nephropathy in rats, suggesting its potential as a non-invasive adjunctive therapy for managing diabetes complications.

Abstract In recent years, research on hyperdoped semiconductors has accelerated, displaying dopant concentrations far exceeding solubility limits to surpass the limitations of conventionally doped materials. Nitrogen defects in silicon have been extensively investigated for their unique characteristics compared to other pnictogen dopants. However, previous practical investigations have encountered challenges in achieving high nitrogen defect concentrations due to the low solubility and diffusivity of nitrogen in silicon, and the necessary non-equilibrium techniques, such as ion implantation, resulting in crystal damage and amorphisation. In this study, we present a single-step technique called high-pressure gas immersion excimer laser doping (HP-GIELD) to manufacture nitrogen-hyperdoped silicon. Our approach offers ultrafast processing, scalability, high control, and reproducibility. Employing HP-GIELD, we achieved nitrogen concentrations exceeding 6 at% (3.01 × 1021 at/cm3) in intrinsic silicon. Notably, nitrogen concentration remained above the liquid solubility limit to ~1 µm in depth. HP-GIELD’s high-pressure environment effectively suppressed physical surface damage and the generation of silicon dangling bonds, while the well-known effects of pulsed laser annealing (PLA) preserved crystallinity. Additionally, we conducted a theoretical analysis of light-matter interactions and thermal effects governing nitrogen diffusion during HP-GIELD, which provided insights into the doping mechanism. Leveraging excimer lasers, our method is well-suited for integration into high-volume semiconductor manufacturing, particularly front-end-of-line processes.

Objective Community-engaged immersive rural experiences were limited during the COVID-19 pandemic when online learning was instigated across medical institutions globally. This study aimed to explore the impact of online learning on medical students’ satisfaction levels and intentions to practice in a rural area after graduation.Design, setting and participants We conducted a natural quasi-experimental longitudinal retrospective cross-sectional study during 2011–2022 for all Australian domestic medical students who undertook a Rural and Remote Medicine (RRM) placement at the University of Queensland. Anonymous administrative course evaluation data were collected for the same two questions in each cohort over 12 years, between 2011 and 2022.Outcome measures Change in students’ intention to pursue a rural medical career and teaching and placement satisfaction levels was determined. Longitudinal data illustrated trends in students’ intention and overall satisfaction across cohorts before and during COVID-19 disruptions.Results 2695 students participated in the surveys with an average response rate of 81%. Intention levels remained steady between 2011 and 2019, during which students experienced a consistent face-to-face orientation and rural placement immersion. During the COVID-19 disruption phase, primarily in 2020 and 2021, students’ intention to pursue a rural medical career significantly decreased when online-only learning placements were implemented, with only 25% of students in the most impacted rotation indicating a strong positive intention, compared with a previous steady 75%. Comparatively, students’ satisfaction with the RRM programme remained steady across all the years at about 85–90%.Conclusions There appears to be a detrimental impact of a lack of immersive community-engaged education experiences on medical student’s intention to pursue a rural medical career. This natural experiment demonstrates that while online learning maintains student satisfaction levels, it lacks value and authenticity and does not inspire students to consider future rural careers. The value of face-to-face and immersive community-engaged experiences is fundamentally an important contributor to inspiring students to work in rural areas in the future.

Abstract Age-related changes in emotional processing are complex, with a bias toward positive information. However, the impact of aging on emotional responses in positive everyday situations remains unclear. Virtual Reality (VR) has emerged as a promising tool for investigating emotional processing, offering a unique balance between ecological validity and experimental control. Yet, limited evidence exists regarding its efficacy to elicit positive emotions in older adults. Our study aimed to explore age-related differences in positive emotional responses to immersion in both social and nonsocial virtual emotional environments. We exposed 34 younger adults and 24 older adults to natural and social 360-degree video content through a low immersive computer screen and a highly immersive Head-Mounted Display, while recording participants' physiological reactions. Participants also provided self-report of their emotions and sense of presence. The findings support VR’s efficacy in eliciting positive emotions in both younger and older adults, with age-related differences in emotional responses influenced by the specific video content rather than immersion level. These findings underscore the potential of VR as a valuable tool for examining age-related differences in emotional responses and developing VR applications to enhance emotional wellbeing across diverse user populations.

Abstract The stability of coal and rock masses in water-rich mines is affected by both mine water erosion and dynamic disturbances. Thus, it is necessary to study the dynamic mechanical response and failure characteristics of coal and rock under the combination of saltwater and a high strain rate. To this end, a split Hopkinson pressure bar device was employed to investigate the effects of impact velocity, water content, and immersion liquid on the dynamic mechanical behaviours of coal and rock. The results revealed that the weakening effect of saltwater on the dynamic mechanical properties of coal and rock is much greater than that of distilled water. With increasing moisture content, the dynamic compressive strength of the coal specimens decreases monotonically, while that of the rock shows a trend of first increasing and then decreasing. The failure process and destruction of coal and rock are comprehensively affected by both the external impact load and the physical and mechanical properties of the material. The degree of damage of the coal and rock specimens increases with increasing impact velocity and water content. Moreover, the influence of various factors on the impact fracture mechanism of coal and rock under saltwater immersion conditions was revealed. These findings are highly important for the design and maintenance of underground coal and rock building structures.

Mental health professionals have relied primarily on clinical evaluations to identify in vivo pathology. As a result, mental health is largely reactive rather than proactive. In an effort to proactively assess mood, we collected continuous neurophysiologic data for ambulatory individuals 8–10 h a day at 1 Hz for 3 weeks (N = 24). Data were obtained using a commercial neuroscience platform (Immersion Neuroscience) that quantifies the neural value of social-emotional experiences. These data were related to self-reported mood and energy to assess their predictive accuracy. Statistical analyses quantified neurophysiologic troughs by the length and depth of social-emotional events with low values and neurophysiologic peaks as the complement. Participants in the study had an average of 2.25 (SD = 3.70, Min = 0, Max = 25) neurophysiologic troughs per day and 3.28 (SD = 3.97, Min = 0, Max = 25) peaks. The number of troughs and peaks predicted daily mood with 90% accuracy using least squares regressions and machine learning models. The analysis also showed that women were more prone to low mood compared to men. Our approach demonstrates that a simple count variable derived from a commercially-available platform is a viable way to assess low mood and low energy in populations vulnerable to mood disorders. In addition, peak Immersion events, which are mood-enhancing, may be an effective measure of thriving in adults.

Introduction Immersing and swimming in cold water is an increasingly popular sport that has recently become a fashionable form of recreation in the winter months. People who regularly swim in cold water mention the many benefits associated with it. Aim of the study This review aims to present the current state of knowledge about immersion and swimming in cold water and to answer questions about the impact of this phenomenon on the human body and its health benefits. Materials and methods The PubMed database was used in this study.A literature review was conducted using the keywords “ice swimming,” “winter swimming,” “cold water swimming,” and “cold water immersion.” Results Much research has been done on the effects of cold water swimming, both positive and negative. Ice swimming affects many systems of our body, including the circulatory system, the immune system, and the endocrine system, and also affects metabolic and mental changes in our body, as shown in the work below. Summary A single immersion in cold water causes a stress reaction in the human body, while regular swimming in cold water causes the body to develop many positive physiological changes. Despite the benefits, it is still important to remember the risks involved, and more research should be done to minimize these dangers.

Envenomation by marine animals poses a significant health concern globally, affecting both local residents and tourists in coastal regions. The primary objective of this review is to critically evaluate the existing scientific literature to determine the most effective first-aid treatment for envenomations caused by marine animals, specifically whether hot-water immersion (HWI) or ice-pack treatment (IPT) provides the best immediate care. This comprehensive review covers a wide range of marine envenomations, from jellyfish stings to stingray injuries. While our focus is primarily on the efficacy of HWI and IPT, we also explore the role of cold-water treatment as a result of its relevance and similarity to ice-pack applications. In addition, we examine other treatments mentioned in the literature, such as medications or vinegar, and highlight their findings where applicable. To provide a clear and structured overview, we summarised the articles in separate tables. These tables categorise the type of research conducted, the marine species studied, the region of origin of the marine species, and the key findings of each study. Our analysis of the available evidence indicates a general consensus in the scientific community on the effectiveness of HWI or IPT for envenomation by marine animals. However, when treating those injuries, it is crucial to consider all factors since there is no universally superior treatment due to the diverse nature of marine habitats.

Introduction: The worldwide application of digital technology has presented dentistry with transformative opportunities. The concept of digital dentures, incorporating computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) techniques, holds the promise of improved precision, customization, and overall patient satisfaction. However, the shift from traditional dentures to their digital counterparts should not be taken lightly, as the intricate interplay between oral physiology, patient comfort, and long-term durability requires thorough examination. Aim: The aim of the present study was to evaluate and compare the dimensional changes of 3D printed (NextDent, 3D Systems, The Netherlands) and conventional heat-cured (Vertex BasiQ 20, 3D Systems, The Netherlands) denture base resin after immersion in artificial saliva for different periods (7, 14, and 30 days) and then applying 3D simulated deformation, tensional strength, and stress, using the ANSYS software (ANSYS Inc., Pennsylvania, USA). Materials and methods: For the manufacturing of the test specimens, an STL file was created, using the Free CAD Version 0.19 (Free CAD, Stuttgart, Germany). The dimensions of each specimen were 20 mm in width, 20 mm in length, and 3 mm in thickness. Two hundred experimental bodies were created and divided into two groups (n=100), with half fabricated using a 3D printer (NextDent 5100, NextDent, 3D Systems, The Netherlands) and the other half prepared using the traditional method of heat-curing polymerization in metal flasks. The test samples were then weighed using an analytical balance, immersed in artificial saliva for three periods (7, 14, and 30 days), and reweighed after water absorption. After desiccation at 37°C for 24 hours and then at 23±1°C for 1 hour, the samples were weighed again. Then the data were entered into the specialized program ANSYS and the 3D simulation tests for deformation, tension, and stress were performed. Statistical analysis was performed using the IBM SPSS Statistics Version 0.26 statistical software, which includes descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA analysis. Results: The findings weren’t statistically significant and indicated that the average metrics for the 3D-printed experimental test samples were marginally greater than those recorded for the conventional samples. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, it is possible to conclude that 3D-printed resin has a lower capacity to withstand deformation, tension, and stress under simulated conditions than conventional dental resin. However, they do not exceed the values accepted by the ISO standard for clinical application of this type of material.

Abstract Background Schools were closed after the onset of COVID-19, with non-face-to-face practices or distance education in nursing education replacing video learning or simulation classes in nursing education clinical practicum. This led to an increase in interest in virtual environment simulation education. While technology-based teaching methods might feel new and intriguing to learners, it is necessary to evaluate learner satisfaction with such an educational method beyond its novelty value. Therefore, this study examined the mediating effect of learning immersion on the relationships between instructional design and educational satisfaction, for virtual environment simulation. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional research design was used. The study sample included students in the third or fourth year of the nursing curriculum in South Korea. The participants were 164 nursing students, who had an experience with virtual environment simulation practices during the past year, prior to September 2021. Data were collected using an online questionnaire. The questionnaire addressed the characteristics of nursing students, instructional design, learning immersion, and educational satisfaction. The collected data were analyzed using path analysis. Results The indirect effect of the path between instructional design and educational satisfaction, mediated through learning immersion in virtual environment simulation was found to be significant. Furthermore, the direct path was also statistically significant. Conclusion Educational content, based on virtual environment simulation, should be implemented based on instructional design. It is necessary to recognize the importance of instructional design that can promote learning immersion in virtual environment simulation, as well as to prepare consistent standards for such design.

Background: Infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV) poses a significant threat to aquaculture sustainability, particularly affecting mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi) and causing significant economic losses. Methods: To address this challenge, this study developed an ISKNV Δorf037l vaccine strain, where the orf037l gene was knocked out. Infection assays conducted at 28 °C showed that the knocking out the orf037l gene decreased the virulence of ISKNV and reduced lethality against mandarin fish by 26.7% compared to wild-type ISKNV. To further diminish residual virulence, the effect of low-temperature (22 °C) immersion immunization was evaluated. Results: The results indicate that low temperature significantly diminished the virulence of the Δorf037l vaccine strain, elevating the survival rate of mandarin fish to 90%. Furthermore, the vaccine strain effectively triggered the expression of crucial immune-related genes, such as IFN-h, IL-1, IκB, Mx, TNF-α, and Viperin, while inducing the production of specific neutralizing antibodies. Low-temperature immersion with Δorf037l achieved a high relative percentage of survival of 92.6% (n = 30) in mandarin fish, suggesting the potential of Δorf037l as a promising immersion vaccine candidate. Conclusions: These findings contribute to advancing fish immersion vaccine development and demonstrate the importance and broad applicability of temperature optimization strategies in vaccine development. Our work carries profound implications for both the theoretical understanding and practical application in aquaculture disease control.

Abstract There is conjecture that our modern urban environments place high demand on our attentional resources, which can become depleted over time and cause mental fatigue. Natural environments, on the other hand, are thought to provide relief from this demand and allow our resources to be replenished. While these claims have been assessed with self-report and behavioral measures, there is limited understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying these attentional benefits. The present randomized controlled trial fills this gap in the literature by using electroencephalography to explore three aspects of attention—alerting, orienting, and executive control—from a behavioral and neural perspective. Participants (N = 92) completed the Attention Network Task before and after either a 40-min walk in nature or a 40-min walk in a control, urban environment. Participants that walked in nature reported their walk to be more restorative than those that walked in the urban environment. Furthermore, the nature group showed an enhanced error-related negativity after their walk, an event-related brain component that indexes executive control capacity, whereas the urban group did not. These findings demonstrate that a 40-min nature walk enhances executive control at a neural level, providing a potential neural mechanism for attention restoration in nature.

Objective To explore the effect of short-term semi-immersion teaching and training based on the learning pyramid model to improve the capacity building of to find early gastric cancer by digestive endoscope physicians. Methods Thirty digestive refresher doctors were randomly selected from our center for 4-week semi-immersion training. The capacity of the trainees to recognize early gastric cancer was tested before and after 4 weeks of training, and the accuracy of the test was compared. Results The accuracy of the test before training, after theoretical lesson and after 4 weeks of training were 44.58%±16.39%, 48.54%±16.95% and 68.75%±12.06% respectively. The test accuracy after theory lesson plus 4 weeks of training was higher than that before training and after only theoretical lesson (P＜0.001).The test accuracy after theoretical lesson was higher than that before the training(P＜0.05). When grouping by the number of cases in previous gastroscopy, no matter before training or after theoretical lesson, the test accuracy with experience in testing was higher than group with less experience. However, the test accuracy of the two groups almost reached a same level after 4 weeks of training(P＜0.01). With the extension of training time, the test accuracy gradually increased (P＜0.001). There was an interaction between grouping and training time (P＜0.001).In the correlation analysis, the number of cases of the previous gastroscopy performance was positively correlated with the test accuracy before training and after theoretical lesson (r=0.668,＜0.001,r=0.581, P＜0.01). Conclusions Semi-immersion training guided by the learning pyramid model can effectively improve the capacity of digestive endoscope physicians to recognize early gastric cancer.

Abstract NiTi is a class of metallic biomaterials, benefit from superelastic behavior, high biocompatibility, and favorable mechanical properties close to that of bone. However, the Ni ion leaching, poor bioactivity, and antibacterial activity limit its clinical applications. In this study, HAp-Nb2O5 composite layers were PC electrodeposited from aqueous electrolytes containing different concentrations of the Nb2O5 particles, i.e., 0–1 g/L, to evaluate the influence of the applied surface engineering strategy on in vitro immersion behavior, Ni2+ ion leaching level, and antibacterial activity of the bare NiTi. Surface characteristics of the electrodeposited layers were analyzed using SEM, TEM, XPS, and AFM. The immersion behavior of the samples was comprehensively investigated through SBF and long-term PBS soaking. Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) infective reference bacteria were employed to address the antibacterial activity of the samples. The results illustrated that the included particles led to more compact and smoother layers. Unlike bare NiTi, composite layers stimulated apatite formation upon immersion in both SBF and PBS media. The concentration of the released Ni2+ ion from the composite layer, containing 0.50 g/L Nb2O5 was ≈ 60% less than that of bare NiTi within 30 days of immersion in the corrosive PBS solution. The Nb2O5-reinforced layers exhibited high anti-adhesive activity against both types of pathogenic bacteria. The hybrid metallic-ceramic system comprising HAp-Nb2O5-coated NiTi offers the prospect of a potential solution for clinical challenges facing the orthopedic application of NiTi.

Abstract Terahertz (THz) technology offers a variety of applications in label-free medical diagnosis and therapy, majority of which rely on the effective medium theory that assumes biological tissues to be optically isotropic and homogeneous at the scale posed by the THz wavelengths. Meanwhile, most recent research discovered mesoscale ( $$\sim \lambda $$ ∼ λ ) heterogeneities of tissues; $$\lambda $$ λ is a wavelength. This posed a problem of studying the related scattering and polarization effects of THz-wave–tissue interactions, while there is still a lack of appropriate tools and instruments for such studies. To address this challenge, in this paper, quantitative polarization-sensitive reflection-mode THz solid immersion (SI) microscope is developed, that comprises a silicon hemisphere-based SI lens, metal-wire-grid polarizer and analyzer, a continuous-wave 0.6 THz ( $$\lambda = 500$$ λ = 500 µm) backward-wave oscillator (BWO), and a Golay detector. It makes possible the study of local polarization-dependent THz response of mesoscale tissue elements with the resolution as high as $$0.15 \lambda $$ 0.15 λ . It is applied to retrieve the refractive index distributions over the freshly-excised rat brain for the two orthogonal linear polarizations of the THz beam, aimed at uncovering the THz birefringence (structural optical anisotropy) of tissues. The most pronounced birefringence is observed for the Corpus callosum, formed by well-oriented and densely-packed axons bridging the cerebral hemispheres. The observed results are verified by the THz pulsed spectroscopy of the porcine brain, which confirms higher refractive index of the Corpus callosum when the THz beam is polarized along axons. Our findings highlight a potential of the quantitative polarization THz microscopy in biophotonics and medical imaging.

In order to study the optimal use of Lactobacillus plantarum in sea cucumber (Apostichopus japonicus), 49 days feeding trial was conducted to determine the influence of immersion bathing in different concentrations of Lactobacillus plantarum CLY-05 on body weight gain rate and non-specific immune activities. The potential effect of CLY-05 on gut microbiota was also analyzed during the immersion bathing at the optimum concentration. The results showed that the body weight growth rate of all bathing groups was higher than that of control. The highest specific growth rate (4.58%) and weight gain rate (25.35%) was achieved at the bacterial concentration of 1×103 CFU/mL. The activities of non-specific immune enzymes (ACP, AKP, SOD and LZM) of all bathing groups increased after immersion bathing, and the enzyme activities of groups bathed with the bacterium at 1×103 and 1×104 CFU/mL reached the highest. Therefore, 1×103 CFU/mL was considered as the optimum concentration of L. plantarum CLY-05 for A. japonicus pond culture. The results of gut microbiota analysis showed that the gut microbiota changed with the addition of L. plantarum CLY-05, and the richness and diversity of the gut microbiota peaked on day 14 and day 21, respectively. The correlation analysis revealed that the non-specific immune enzyme activities were significantly correlated to some gut bacteria (in the phyla Proteobacteria, Firmicutes) after immersion bathing in L. plantarum CLY-05. These findings provide the theoretical foundation for probiotic application in sea cucumber farming.

Background and aimAchieving the aesthetic standards in tooth-colored restorative materials requires close attention to their color, translucency, and resistance to discoloration. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of sintering temperature on color stability and translucency in zirconia systems with low, high, and ultra-high translucencies.MethodsThis experimental study was conducted on 60 zirconia disks with low, high and ultra-high translucencies (n = 20 per group), each group divided into subgroups to be sintered at either 1450°C or 1550°C (n = 10 per subgroup). Baseline color and translucency parameters were measured, the specimens were then immersed in coffee solution for 30 days, and the measurements were repeated post-immersion. Changes in color (ΔE) and translucency (ΔTP) were calculated via CIELAB formula and compared by using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test (α = 0.05).ResultsResults of two-way ANOVA showed that the ΔE was significantly different among the three zirconia translucencies (P0.05). Regarding the ΔTP, two-way ANOVA showed that the difference was not statistically significant either among the three zirconia types (P = 0.4430) or between the two sintering temperatures (P = 0.4544). Nor was the interaction between zirconia type and sintering temperature statistically significant (P = 0.5505).ConclusionIt was concluded that sintering temperature had no effect on color and translucency changes after immersion in coffee. Whereas zirconia type significantly affected the color changes after immersion in coffee; with the higher-translucency zirconia types being significantly more color-stable than the low-translucency zirconia.

Background: Oxidative stress and inflammation increase after eccentric exercise. Cold-water immersion after exercise is common among athletes to accelerate recovery. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of cold-water immersion after eccentric exercise on the oxidative and inflammatory responses in skeletal muscle. Methods: One hundred male Wistar rats (weight 285.11 ± 41.65) were randomly divided into control, eccentric exercise, eccentric exercise + normal water, and eccentric exercise + cold water groups. Half, 24, 48, 72, and 168 hours after eccentric exercise, EDL muscle was removed in sterile conditions. The eccentric exercise involves 90 minutes of interval running on the treadmill at a speed of 16 m/min and a -16-degree slope. Muscle reactive oxygen species (ROS) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels were measured by DCFDA and immunohistochemical staining. Materials and Methods: TEWL values were measured before water immersion and at 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 minutes after immersion of the skin in water for 5 minutes. Results: Forty-one healthy volunteers were enrolled with an average age of 30.4±5.5 years. Twenty-five subjects were female and sixteen were male. Tilapia, as one of the fish widely cultured around the world, is suffering severe impact from the streptococcus disease with the deterioration of the breeding environment and the increasing of breeding density, which brings serious economic loss to tilapia farming. In this study, the surface immunogenic protein (Sip) of Streptococcus agalactiae (S. agalactiae) was selected as the potential candidate antigen and connected with bacterial nano cellulose (BNC) to construct the nanocarrier subunit vaccine (BNC-rSip), and the immersion immune effects against S. agalactiae and Streptococcus iniae (S. iniae) in Nile tilapia were evaluated on the basis of the serum antibody level, non-specific enzyme activity, the immune-related gene expression and relative percent survival (RPS). The results indicated that Sip possessed the expected immunogenicity according to the immunoinformatic analysis. Compared with the rSip group, BNC-rSip significantly induced serum antibody production and improved the innate immunity level of tilapia. After challenge, the RPS of BNC-rSip groups were 78.95% (S. agalactiae) and 67.86% (S. iniae), which were both higher than those of rSip groups,31.58% (S. agalactiae) and 35.71% (S. iniae), respectively. Our study indicated that BNC-rSip can induce protective immunity for tilapia through immersion immunization and may be an ideal candidate vaccine for controlling tilapia streptococcal disease.

Background: Lactobacillus acidophilus is involved in plaque formation and progression of caries, and studies show that it can be transmitted through the toothbrush. Thus, decontamination the toothbrush is necessary for oral health. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of different immersion times in chlorhexidine (CHX) for reducing the L. acidophilus contamination of the toothbrush.Methods: This experimental study was conducted on 84 dental students. Primary saliva samples were obtained from the students, and the salivary count of L. acidophilus was measured. The students were assigned to four groups, and the groups were standardized in terms of primary salivary L. acidophilus count: (I) simple rinse of toothbrush with water, (II) simple rinse of toothbrush with CHX, (III) immersion of toothbrush in CHX for 10 minutes, and (IV) immersion of toothbrush in CHX for 24 hours after use. Saliva samples were collected again from the dental students after 3 weeks of practice. The mean L. acidophilus colony counts of primary and secondary saliva samples were calculated. Also, the mean L. acidophilus colony counts of toothbrushes were compared among the four groups. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey’s tests. The level of significance was set at 0.05.Results: The mean L. acidophilus colony count of toothbrushes was significantly different between the four groups (P < 0.05). Groups 3 (P = 0.040) and 4 (P = 0.012) showed significantly lower toothbrush microbial count compared with Group 1. No significant difference was noted in the salivary colony count of the four groups after the intervention (P > 0.05).Conclusion: Immersion of toothbrush in CHX for 24 hours and 10 minutes was more effective than other methods for the reduction of L. acidophilus count of the toothbrush. In order to prevent corrosion of bristles, 10 minutes of immersion is recommended.

Background and Objective: One of the most important factors in the success of anterior composite restorations is color stability in different situations in mouth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the color stability of four anterior composites in the staining solutions (tea and coffee) and under Ultra-Violette (UV) accelerated aging using spectrophotometer. Methods: This in-vitro study was conducted on 80 samples of four composites (Grandio, G-aenial, Kalore and Estelite Σ quick). Samples were divided into four subgroups (5 samples in each subgroup): immersion in coffee (for 48 hours), tea (for 48 hours), distilled water (as the control group) and exposure to UV for 168 hours. The color of the samples was evaluated by the spectrophotometer before and after the various conditions using the CIE Lab system and color changes (ΔE*ab) were calculated. Findings: In all composites, the maximum and minimum levels of color changes were related to the groups immersed in coffee and distilled water, respectively. The significant color change was observed in all subgroups (ΔE*ab>3.3), except for the control groups and tea-Estelite Σ quick (ΔE*ab=2.79). The highest color change was related to immersion in coffee-Grandio (ΔE*ab=9.084) and the lowest observed in immersion in distilled water-Estelite Σ quick (ΔE*ab=0.836). In coffee immersion subgroups of Grandio and Kalore, higher color change was seen compared to Estelite Σ quick (p=0.02 and p=0.028, respectively). Conclusion: Long-term exposure to tea and coffee and UV accelerated aging leads to clinical color change in Grandio, G-aenial, Kalore and Estelite Σ quick composites.

The Colorado Immersion Training in Community Engagement (CIT) program supports a change in the research trajectory of junior faculty, early career researchers, and doctoral students toward Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR). CIT is within the Community Engagement and Health Equity Core (CEHE) at the Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CCTSI), an NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Science award. This Translational Science Case Study reports on CIT’s impacts from 2010 to 2019. A team from The Evaluation Center at the University of Colorado Denver utilized four primary data sources: administrative records, participant written reflections, participant and Community Research Liaison (CRL) interviews, and community partner surveys. Data were analyzed using the framework of CBPR principles and the conceptual logic model. CIT trained 122 researchers in CBPR through embedded education within various Colorado communities. CIT Alumni secured ∼$8,723,000 in funding between CCTSI Pilot Grants and external funding. Also, CIT alumni implemented CBPR into curricula and community programming and developed deep, lasting relationships. Further key learnings include the crucial role of CRLs in building relationships between university and community partners and how CIT may serve as a mechanism to improve historical mistrust between communities and universities.

Episodic increases in cerebral blood flow (CBF) are thought to contribute to improved cerebrovascular function and health. Head-out water immersion (HOWI) may be a useful modality to increase CBF secondary to the hydrostatic pressure placed on the body. However, it is unclear whether water temperatures common to the general public elicit similar cerebrovascular responses. We tested the hypothesis that mean middle cerebral artery blood velocity (MCAvmean) and cerebrovascular reactivity to CO2 (CVRCO2) would be higher during an acute bout of thermoneutral (TN; 35°C) vs. cool (COOL; 25°C) HOWI. Ten healthy participants (age: 23±3 y; 4 women) completed two randomized HOWI visits. Right MCAvmean, end-tidal CO2 (PETCO2) mean arterial pressure (MAP), and MCA conductance (MCAvmean/MAP) were continuously recorded. CVRCO2 was assessed using a stepped hypercapnia protocol before (PRE), at 30 minutes of HOWI (HOWI), immediately after HOWI (POST-1), and 45 minutes after HOWI (POST-2). The combination of an optical probe and single-drop direct immersion microextraction (DI-SDME-OP) was used for the preconcentration and subsequent spectrophotometric determination of rhodamine 6G (Rh6G). The developed method is based on the formation of an ionic associate between Rh6G and picric acid at pH 3.0 and its extraction with amyl acetate. A microdrop of the organic phase was stably placed in the hole of an optical probe immersed in the sample solution. The absorbance of the extraction phase was monitored at 534 nm. The proposed method combines in a single step several stages of the analytical procedure, such as pre-concentration, phase separation, transfer of the extraction phase to the instrument and online measurement. The sensitivity of the proposed approach is not inferior to existing microextraction methods involving the combination of liquid-phase or solid-phase extraction with spectrophotometry or HPLC with a UV-Vis detector. The evaluation of the greenness of the developed method carried out by the AGREE method (0.58 points) showed that it outperforms other similar existing techniques using this parameter. The calibration plot for the determination of Rh6G by the DI-SDME-OP method was linear over the range of 10-500 nM with a correlation coefficient of 0.9956. The limit of detection was 3.4 nM. The accuracy and applicability of the method were evaluated by the determination of Rh6G in natural waters and lipstick.

Abstract Introduction Repair materials must have low solubility. Phosphate buffered saline (PBS) allows simulating clinical condition and interaction with dentin may be important for the correct evaluate of mass loss of bioceramic cements. Objective To evaluate the effect of distilled water (DW), or PBS immersion on the solubility of Bio-C Repair (BCR, Angelus) or MTA Repair HP (MTAHP, Angelus) using a dentin tube model. Material and method Bovine dentin tubes with a length of 4 mm, an internal diameter of 1.5 mm and walls thickness of approximately 1 mm were made. The specimens were immersed in DW for 24h, then filled with BCR or MTAHP (n = 14) and stored in an oven at 37°C and 95% humidity for 24h. After being weighed on a precision balance to determine the initial mass, the specimens were immersed in DW (pH 6.5) or PBS (pH 7.0) (n = 7) for 28 days. Empty tubes also were used for calculating the mass loss of the dentin (n=4). After this period, the specimens were weighed until stabilization of the final mass occurred (0.001g). Abstract Background Practical courses in undergraduate medical training often lack a didactic concept. Active participation and learning success largely depend on chance. This study was initiated to evaluate a novel concept of structured work-based learning (WBL) in the course of students’ half-day radiology immersion experience (IE). Methods This prospective, single-centre cohort study included 228 third-year students of the 2019 summer semester who underwent the obligatory radiology IE at a university hospital. The course was based on a novel structured WBL concept that applied established didactic concepts including blended learning, the FAIR principles of feedback, activity, individualization, and relevance, and Peyton’s four-step approach. Outcomes of equal weight were student and supervisor satisfaction with the clinical radiology IE assessed by paper-based- and online survey, respectively. Secondary outcome was achievement of intended learning outcomes assessed by means of mini clinical evaluation exercises and personal interviews. Results Satisfaction with structured WBL was high in 99.0% of students. Students’ expectations were exceeded, and they felt taken seriously at the professional level. Dissatisfaction was reasoned with quality of learning videos (0.6%), little support by supervisors (0.5%), or inadequate feedback (0.6%). Supervising resident physicians rated achievement of intended learning outcomes regarding cognitive and psychomotor competences as excellent for all students. Personal interviews revealed achievement of affective competence in some students. Twelve of 16 (75.0%) supervising physicians were satisfied with focussing on intended learning outcomes and student preparation for IE. Two of 15 (13.3%) supervisors were unsatisfied with time spent, and 4 of 16 (25%) with the approach of assessment. Conclusions This study demonstrated that both students and supervisors were satisfied with the novel concept of structured WBL within the scope of clinical radiology IE. Achievement of intended learning outcomes was promising.

Creating a sustainable residency research program is necessary to develop a sustainable research pipeline, as highlighted by the recent Society for Academic Emergency Medicine 2024 Consensus Conference. We sought to describe the implementation of a novel, immersive research program for first-year emergency medicine residents. We describe the curriculum development, rationale, implementation process, and lessons learned from the implementation of a year-long research curriculum for first-year residents. We further evaluated resident perception of confidence in research methodology, interest in research, and the importance of their research experience through a 32-item survey. In two cohorts, 25 first-year residents completed the program. All residents met their scholarly project requirements by the end of their first year. Two conference abstracts and one peer-reviewed publication were accepted for publication, and one is currently under review. Survey responses indicated that there was an increase in residents’ perceived confidence in research methodology, but this was limited by the small sample size. In summary, this novel resident research curriculum demonstrated a standardized, reproducible, and sustainable approach to provide residents with an immersive research program.

The popularity of immersion, understood as absolute engrossment in a virtual world, has been growing year by year, due to new hi-tech sound, image and data-processing technologies. Man, because of human nature, is attracted to immersion as a way of experiencing new environments, which are often very different from those offered by the real world. Thanks to immersion in a virtual world, one can step into any desired computer-generated reality. This technology has found its use in the process of motor rehabilitation, likewise, psychological therapy. Total immersion in a virtual world creates the possibility for guided rehabilitation, utilising the appeal of am imaginary environment. Patients become more engaged and motivated to take part in the laborious and painstakingly long process leading to the recovery of their motor functions. Cooperation between physiotherapists and psychologists with engineers has resulted in the creation of new software solutions, and improved equipment, which can be tailored to meet the needs of patients with various mental problems or physical disfunctions and disabilities.

Lactococcus petauri is an important emergent bacterial pathogen of salmonids in the USA. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the protection conferred to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) against L. petauri by formalin-killed vaccines in immersion and injectable forms, as well as the enhanced protection afforded by booster vaccination. In the first challenge, fish were immunized via intracoelomic injection (IC) or immersion (Imm) routes alone. Approximately 418 degree days (Temperature in degree Celsius × days post-immunization) (dd) Imm, or 622 dd IC post-vaccination, fish were challenged via IC with wild-type L. petauri. In the second experiment, initial Imm vaccination was followed by booster vaccination via Imm or IC routes 273 dd post-immunization along with appropriate PBS controls. The various vaccination protocol efficacies were evaluated by challenging fish with L. petauri by cohabitation with diseased fish 399 dd post-booster administration. A relative percent survival (RPS) of 89.5% and 28% was recorded in the IC and Imm single immunization treatments, respectively. In the second study, an RPS of 97.5%, 10.2%, 2.6% and −10.1% plus approximately 0%, 50%, 20%, and 30% bacterial persistence was recorded in the Imm immunized + IC boosted, Imm immunized + mock IC boosted, Imm immunized + Imm boosted, and Imm immunized + mock Imm boosted treatments, respectively. Only the Imm immunized + IC injection boosted treatments provided significant protection when compared to unvaccinated and challenged treatments (p < 0.05). In conclusion, although both Imm and IC vaccines appear safe for trout, the inactivated Imm vaccines seem to provide only mild and temporary protection against lactococcosis; whereas IC immunized trout develop a significantly stronger protective response in both challenges.

Abstract It is important to examine the long-term durability of glass-kenaf fibre reinforced phenolic resin composites when they are exposed to humid environments or submerged in water. Furthermore, the durability of such composites when immersed in different pH solutions have yet to be examined. As such, this present study examined the use of 4%, 8%, and 12% volume fractions (vfs) of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) as a filler and reinforcement to improve the properties of glass fibre-kenaf reinforced phenolic resin composites. The flexural strength of these composites was examined both pre- and post-immersion in distilled water (pH 7), seawater (pH 8), and an acidic solution (pH 3) for 60 days. The diffusion mechanism, difussion coefficient, and water absorption concentration were also examined. The difussion coefficient and water absorption concentration occurred post-immersion in distilled water (pH7) and seawater (pH8) while the acidic solution (pH3) resulted in the highest loss of mass and size. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the surfaces of the saturated composites indicated that fibre-matrix interfacial bonding was weak. However, composites that contained a higher vf of MCC exhibited stronger interfacial bonding between the matrix and constituents, thereby, reducing water absorption and diffusion. The flexural strength of the composite pre- and post-immersion was MCC12 > MCC8 > MCC4 > MCC0, in descending order of strength.

Objective: Many health sciences librarians enter the profession without specific health sciences training. Some LIS programs have health sciences courses or tracks, but health sciences training within an LIS program is only one path to entering health sciences librarianship. To develop a map of pathways into health sciences librarianship, an immersion session at the Medical Library Association conference in 2022 asked health sciences librarians to share how they entered the profession. Methods: The immersion session was structured in three parts: facilitator introductions, small group discussions, and a whole group summary discussion. Guided by questions from the facilitators, small groups discussed what pathways currently exist, how to promote existing pathways, what new pathways should be created, and how to develop and promote pathways that make the profession more equitable, diverse, and inclusive. Results: Through in-the-moment thematic analysis of the small group discussions, the following emerged as key pathways: library school education; internships and practica; the Library and Information Science (LIS) pipeline; on-the-job training; mentoring; self-teaching/hands-on learning; and continuing education. Themes of equity, diversity, and inclusion arose throughout the session, especially in the concluding whole group discussion. Conclusion: Small group discussions in a conference immersion session showed the value of community building in a profession that has multiple pathways for entrance, highlighting the importance of unearthing hidden knowledge about avenues for exploring and enhancing career pathways. The article seeks to address barriers to entry into the profession and adds to the literature on strengthening the field of health sciences librarianship.

The coating process for solid dosage forms is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry but presents challenges for small-scale production, needed in personalized medicine and clinical or galenic settings. This study aimed to evaluate immersion coating, a cost-effective small-scale method, for enteric-coated gelatin capsules using standard equipment. Two enteric coating polymers and different polymer concentrations were tested, along with API solubility. Results were compared with commercially available enteric capsule shells. Successful preparation of enteric coating capsules via immersion necessitates a comprehensive grasp of API and enteric polymer behavior. However, utilizing commercially available enteric capsule shells does not guarantee ease or robustness, as their efficacy hinges on the attributes of the active ingredient and excipients. Notably, coating with Eudragit S100 stands out for its superior process robustness, requiring minimal or no development time, thus representing the best option for small-scale enteric capsule production.

Background: Different clinical specialties in the United States do not agree on clinical guidance for water birth, while each references the evidence base. This study aimed to compare diffusion of evidence about water immersion for labor and birth among midwives and nurses, obstetricians, and pediatricians. Methods: A systematic review of the scientific literature was conducted. Descriptive statistics compared the source articles and references for each discipline. Odds ratio for citing outside a discipline were calculated using logistic regression. Results: The sample included 428 articles with 3302 references. Midwives and nurses authored 34.3% of the articles, which encompassed 21.2% and 20.5% of references by obstetricians and pediatricians. Obstetricians (OR 0.54 95% CI 0.42 – 0.70) and pediatricians (OR 0.60 95% CI 0.37 – 0.92) were less likely to reference evidence authored by midwives. Discussion: Lack of evidence diffusion across disciplines contributes to the lack of consensus among specialties in the United States.

Introduction: The novel Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) spreads through respiratory droplets, and various strategies have been developed to reduce its spread. One of these strategies is the use of oral rinses, such as chlorhexidine, povidone iodine, and hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ), to reduce the viral load. However, while these rinses have advantages in preventing the spread of the virus, they may also have adverse effects on restorative materials in the oral cavity, particularly dental ceramics. The usage of mouthwashes during the pandemic may affect the surface roughness of dental ceramics, leading to plaque accumulation. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the surface roughness of ceramics after immersion in different oral rinses for seven, 15, and 30 days. Materials and Methods: An in vitro study was conducted in the Department of Prosthodontics at Bharati Vidyapeeth Dental College and Hospital, Sangli, Maharashtra, India. The study was conducted over a period of four months, from October 2021 to January 2022. A total of 51 specimens of dental ceramics were fabricated using a mold with dimensions of 10 mm diameter x 2 mm height. These specimens were randomly divided into three groups based on the immersion solution: distilled water, hydrogen peroxide, and povidone iodine. Each immersion cycle lasted for one minute, and the immersion was performed for 30 days. Surface analysis was carried out using a Surftester at intervals of seven, 15, and 30 days. OBJECTIVE: To find the effect of artificial saliva, water and different percentages of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) on the flexural strength and microhardness of heat cure polymethylmethacrylate (HC-PMMA) denture base resin. METHODS: An in-vitro study conducted, from April-December, 2020, at the MRL University of Peshawar and Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Biomedical Materials (COMSATS) Lahore. Total of 100 specimens for five groups (n=20) denoted by A, B, C, D and E containing 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% PVC in HC-PMMA respectively were fabricated to test flexural strength. Abstract Nanostructures exhibiting optical resonances (so-called nanoantennas) have strong potential for applications in color printing and filtering with sub-wavelength resolution. While small scale demonstrations of these systems are interesting as a proof-of-concept, their large scale and volume fabrication requires deeper analysis and further development for industrial adoption. Here, we evaluate the color quality produced by large size nanoantenna arrays fabricated on a 12-in. wafer using deep UV immersion photolithography and dry etching processes. The color reproduction and quality are analyzed in context of the CIE color diagram, showing that a vivid and vibrant color palette, almost fully covering the sRGB color space, can be obtained with this mass-manufacturing-ready fabrication process. The obtained results, thus, provide a solid foundation for the potential industrial adoption of this emerging technology and expose the limits and challenges of the process.
