Abstract The development of innovative methods for concealing critical data in multimedia files has exploded in information security in recent years. Cryptography and steganography cannot be used alone to protect data; rather, they can be combined and used in a single system. Audio steganography is among the most important information security techniques. It involves the concealment of information within audio signals to achieve covert communication. This paper introduces a comprehensive technique that integrates chaos Henon, Baker, and Arnold maps for image encryption with audio steganography to create a robust and secure audio steganography technique. First, the target image is encrypted using chaotic maps. Then, it is embeded within the high frequencies of the cover audio signal based on the Inverse Short Time Fourier Transform (ISTFT) to be transmitted to the destination through the channel. By integrating both encryption and concealment techniques, the cover audio signal quality can be preserved. Moreover, the hidden image security and robustness are improved, making the technique resistant to many types of attacks. The simulation results confirm that the suggested technique is robust in the presence of attacks. It achieves a distinct perceptual quality with an appreciated peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of 91.2 dB and a Mean Square Error (MSE) of 7.5 × 10–10. The randomness of the resulting encrypted image has successfully passed the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) statistical test suite.

Abstract A green building (GB) is a design idea that integrates environmentally conscious technology and sustainable procedures throughout the building’s life cycle. However, because different green requirements and performances are integrated into the building design, the GB design procedure typically takes longer than conventional structures. Machine learning (ML) and other advanced artificial intelligence (AI), such as DL techniques, are frequently utilized to assist designers in completing their work more quickly and precisely. Therefore, this study aims to develop a GB design predictive model utilizing ML and DL techniques to optimize resource consumption, improve occupant comfort, and lessen the environmental effect of the built environment of the GB design process. A dataset ASHARE-884 is applied to the suggested models. An Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) is applied, which involves cleaning, sorting, and converting the category data into numerical values utilizing label encoding. In data preprocessing, the Z-Score normalization technique is applied to normalize the data. After data analysis and preprocessing, preprocessed data is used as input for Machine learning (ML) such as RF, DT, and Extreme GB, and Stacking and Deep Learning (DL) such as GNN, LSTM, and RNN techniques for green building design to enhance environmental sustainability by addressing different criteria of the GB design process. The performance of the proposed models is assessed using different evaluation metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall and F1-score. The experiment results indicate that the proposed GNN and LSTM models function more accurately and efficiently than conventional DL techniques for environmental sustainability in green buildings.

Abstract Green building (GB) techniques are essential for reducing energy waste in the construction sector, which accounts for almost 40% of global energy consumption. Despite their importance, challenges such as occupant behavior and energy management gaps often result in GBs consuming up to 2.5 times more energy than intended. To address this, Building Automation Systems (BAS) play a crucial role in enhancing energy efficiency. This research develops a predictive model for GB design using machine learning to minimize energy consumption and improve indoor sustainability. The dataset is utilized to predict cooling and heating individually, with data visualization by graphically illustrating dataset features and preprocessing through Z-Score normalization and dataset splitting. The proposed model, based on active learning and utilizing ML regressors such as Random Forest (RF), Decision Tree (DT), Gradient Boosting (GB), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), CatBoost (CB), Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LGBM), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), and Logistic Regressor (LR), shows significant performance improvements. The CBR-AL model achieves impressive results with values of 0.9975 for cooling (Y1) and 0.9883 for heating (Y2), indicating a high level of accuracy. The model’s success in reducing energy consumption and improving sustainability has potential ripple effects, including substantial cost savings, reduced carbon footprints, and improved operational efficiency in green buildings. This approach not only enhances environmental sustainability but also sets a benchmark for future advancements in predictive modelling for energy management.

Abstract In light of the multitude of olive trees cultivated and the lack of the genetic diversity of available genotypes to select varieties and lines that are characterized by high diversity and better performance under the corresponding conditions, A comparison analysis of the genotyping and morphological characteristics of eight olive cultivars growing in Saudi Arabia’s Al-Jouf region was conducted and analyzed. Morpho-anatomical and chemical characteristics along with both inter-simple-sequence repeats (ISSRs) and start-codon-targeted (SCoT) markers were used to evaluate the genetic diversity among eight olive varieties in Al-Jouf, Saudi Arabia. Analyses of 27 morphological, chemical, and anatomical characteristics concluded the existence of genetic differences among the studied varieties. Moreover, six ISSR and eight SCoT primer combinations produced a total of 48 loci, of which 18 (10 ISSR and 8 SCoT) were polymorphic. The average polymorphism information content (PIC values of 0.48 and 0.44, respectively) and marker index (MI of 0.79 and 0.48, respectively) detected for ISSR and SCoT markers revealed the prevalence of high genetic diversity among the studied olive varieties. Based on chemical and anatomical characteristics and the selected molecular markers, the eight olive cultivars were grouped into two distinct clusters. Clusters in the adjacent joint dendrogram produced using ISSR, SCoT and combined data were similar, and grouped all individuals into two groups. However, the dendrogram generated on the basis of SCoT separated individuals into subgroups containing at least two varieties. The findings showed that both methods were effective in assessing diversity, and that SCoT markers can be used as a reliable and informative method for assessing genetic diversity and relationships among olive varieties and can serve as a complementary tool to provide a more complete understanding of the genetic diversity available in Olea europaea populations in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract The main aim of this work is to study the effect of different nutrient supply systems and their effect on the performance of the Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and Lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. crispa) plant integration system. To achieve that, five treatments having different culture systems (T1: Aquaculture (control), T2: Hydroponics (standard requirement: N = 210, P = 31, K = 234, Mg = 48, Ca = 200, S = 64, Fe = 14, Mn = 0.5, Zn = 0.05, B = 0.5, Cu = 0.02 and Mo = 0.01 ppm), T3: Aquaponics without nutrients addition, T4: Aquaponics with supplementary nutrients (KNO3, 101 g L−1, KH2PO4, 136 g L−1, Ca(NO3)2, 236 g L−1, MgSO4, 246 g L−1, K2SO4, 115 g L−1 and chelates for trace elements) in water (EC is 800 ppm) and T5: Aquaponics with supplementary nutrients spray on plants) were carried out. The previous systems were operated at three flow rates, namely, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 L h−1 plant−1. The various water quality parameters, plant growth and fish growth were studied. The result indicated that the highest values of N, P, k, Ca and Mg consumption rate were found with T2 and 1.5 L h−1 plant−1 of flow rate. The root length, fresh and dry of shoot and root for lettuce plants grown in T2 system was better than those grown in different culture system (T3, T4 and T5). Different culture systems showed significant effect on fish growth in terms of weight gain, specific growth rate and feed efficiency ratio. Higher growth rate was observed in treatment T3 as compared to other treatments. The production costs ranged from 2820.5 to 4885.4 LE ($ = 30.92 LE) for all culture systems.

Abstract The main aim of this study is to determine the physical and chemical properties of biochar synthesized from different materials (straw rice, sawdust, sugar cane, and tree leaves) at different pyrolysis temperatures (400, 600, and 800 °C). The physical and chemical properties such as moisture content, water holding capacity, bulk density, and porosity; and pH, electrical conductivity (EC), organic matter, organic carbon, total nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and sulfur were determined, respectively. The results show that the biochar yield decreased with increasing pyrolysis temperature, and the values of the analyzed properties varied depending on the type of biochar and pyrolysis temperature. The moisture content ranged from 1.11 to 4.18%, and the water holding capacity ranged from 12.9 to 27.6 g water g−1 dry sample. The highest value of bulk density (211.9 kg m−3) was obtained from sawdust at a pyrolysis temperature of 800 °C. The porosity values ranged from 45.9 to 63.7%. The highest values of pH and EC (10.4 and 3.46 dS m−1) were obtained from tree leaves at a pyrolysis temperature of 800 °C. Total organic matter ranged from 66.0 to 98.1%, total organic carbon ranged from 38.3 to 56.9%, and total nitrogen ranged from 0.4 to 1.9%. The highest values of phosphorus and calcium content (134.6 and 649.0 mg kg−1) were obtained from sugar cane at a pyrolysis temperature of 800 °C. The magnesium, sodium and sulfur content had ranges of 10.9–51.7, 1124–1703 and 3568–12,060 mg kg−1, respectively.

Abstract The main aim of this work is to study the main factors affecting the quality of the dried product and the energy requirements through optimizing these factors. To achieve that different drying systems (solar, hybrid solar and oven dryings), layers thickness (1, 2 and 3 cm) and drying temperatures (50, 60 and 70 °C) were used. The obtained results indicated that, the accumulated weight loss of marjoram leaves ranged from 73.22 to 76.9%, for all treatments under study. The moisture content of marjoram leaves ranged from 273.39 to 333.17, 258.02 to 333.04 and 269.38 to 324.90% d.b. for hybrid solar, oven and solar drying systems, respectively. The highest value of the drying rate of marjoram leaves (223.73 gwater kg−1 h−1) was obtained when the marjoram dried by oven drying system at 70 °C at 1 cm layer thickness. The highest values of the basil and marjoram oil content (2.91%) was obtained when the marjoram dried under sun drying system. The energy consumption for drying marjoram decreases with increasing drying temperature and layer thickness for hybrid solar and oven drying systems. The cost of dried marjoram dried under hybrid solar drying system was lower than those of oven drying system, the highest cost (13.48 LE kg−1) was obtained at a temperature of 50 °C and a layer thickness of 1 cm.

Abstract Bio-diesel is used for engine as a replacement of diesel fuel which is characterized by lower emission, low pollution and renewable some of fuel. This study focus on how to enhance the production of bio-oil from Jatropha seeds by using microwave and ultrasonic as pre-treatments. To achieve that, the effects of extraction temperature (60, 80, 100 and 120 °C) and extraction screw speed (60, 90 and 120 rpm) on oil extraction yield and quality, extraction energy requirements and extraction time and were studied. Studying the effect of pretreatments by microwave and ultrasonic on the yield, energy and time of extraction were studied. The results most important indicate that the highest oil yield (25.1%) was recorded at 120 °C extraction temperature and 60 rpm screw speed. The energy required for extraction ranged from 8 to 11.5 W.h depending on temperature and speed of extraction. The results indicated that using both pretreatments improve the oil yield by 5.03% for microwave and by 6.75% for ultrasonic. Finally, the results concluded that to produce 1 kg of biodiesel you need 1.1 kg raw oil and consume from 2052.5 W.h energy requirement.

Abstract Vehicular Adhoc Networks (VANETs) is an emerging field that employs a wireless local area network (WLAN) characterized by an ad-hoc topology. Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) comprise diverse entities that are integrated to establish effective communication among themselves and with other associated services. Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) commonly encounter a range of obstacles, such as routing complexities and excessive control overhead. Nevertheless, the majority of these attempts were unsuccessful in delivering an integrated approach to address the challenges related to both routing and minimizing control overheads. The present study introduces an Improved Deep Reinforcement Learning (IDRL) approach for routing, with the aim of reducing the augmented control overhead. The IDRL routing technique that has been proposed aims to optimize the routing path while simultaneously reducing the convergence time in the context of dynamic vehicle density. The IDRL effectively monitors, analyzes, and predicts routing behavior by leveraging transmission capacity and vehicle data. As a result, the reduction of transmission delay is achieved by utilizing adjacent vehicles for the transportation of packets through Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication. The simulation outcomes were executed to assess the resilience and scalability of the model in delivering efficient routing and mitigating the amplified overheads concurrently. The method under consideration demonstrates a high level of efficacy in transmitting messages that are safeguarded through the utilization of vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication. The simulation results indicate that the IDRL routing approach, as proposed, presents a decrease in latency, an increase in packet delivery ratio, and an improvement in data reliability in comparison to other routing techniques currently available.

The reaction of thiophene-2-carbohydrazide 1 or 5-bromothiophene-2-carbohydrazide 2 with various haloaryl isothiocyanates and subsequent cyclization by heating in aqueous sodium hydroxide yielded the corresponding 4-haloaryl-5-(thiophen-2-yl or 5-bromothiophen-2-yl)-2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thione 5a-e. The triazole derivatives 5a and 5b were reacted with different secondary amines and formaldehyde solution to yield the corresponding 2-aminomethyl-4-haloaryl-2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiones 6a–e, 7a–e, 8, 9, 10a and 10b in good yields. The in vitro antimicrobial activity of compounds 5a–e, 6a–e, 7a–d, 8, 9, 10a and 10b was evaluated against a panel of standard pathogenic bacterial and fungal strains. Compounds 5a, 5b, 5e, 5f, 6a–e, 7a–d, 8, 9, 10a and 10b showed marked activity, particularly against the tested Gram-positive bacteria and the Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli, and all the tested compounds were almost inactive against all the tested fungal strains. In addition, compounds 5e, 6a–e, 7a–d and 10a exhibited potent anti-proliferative activity, particularly against HepG-2 and MCF-7 cancer cell lines (IC50 < 25 μM). A detailed structural insight study based on the single crystals of compounds 5a, 5b, 6a, 6d and 10a is also reported. Molecular docking studies of the highly active antibacterial compounds 5e, 6b, 6d, 7a and 7d showed a high affinity for DNA gyrase. Meanwhile, the potent anti-proliferative activity of compounds 6d, 6e and 7d may be attributed to their high affinity for cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (CDK2).

Abstract Oxidative desulfurization (ODS) is considered to be one of the most promising desulfurization processes as it is energy-efficient and requires mild operating conditions. In this study, a novel green synthesized Al- based metal–organic framework with high surface area has been synthesized hydrothermally using waste polyethylene terephthalate bottles (PET) as a source of terephthalic acid as an organic linker. The prepared Al based MOF have been characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The catalytic activity of the prepared Al-MOF was evaluated in the oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of both modeled and real crude oil samples. The different operating parameters (temperature, time, catalyst dose, oxidant loading and sonication) on the ODS performance have been optimized. The optimal conditions for maximum removal of thiophene from modeled oil samples were found to be 30 min, 0.5 g of catalyst and 1:3 oil to oxidant ratio. Under the optimized conditions, sulfur removal in real oil samples obtained from Alexandria petroleum company was 90%. The results revealed that, the presented approach is credited to cost-effectiveness, environmental benignity, and ease of preparation, predicting great prospects for desulfurization of fuel oils on a commercial level.

Abstract Silicon (Si) and/or proline (Pro) are natural supplements that are considered to induce plants' stress tolerance against various abiotic stresses. Sweet corn (Zea mays L. saccharata) production is severely afflicted by salinity stress. Therefore, two field tests were conducted to evaluate the potential effects of Si and/or Pro (6mM) used as seed soaking (SS) and/or foliar spray (FS) on Sweet corn plant growth and yield, physio-biochemical attributes, and antioxidant defense systems grown in a saline (EC = 7.14dS m−1) soil. The Si and/or Pro significantly increased growth and yield, photosynthetic pigments, free proline, total soluble sugars (TSS), K+/Na+ratios, relative water content (RWC), membrane stability index (MSI), α-Tocopherol (α-TOC), Ascorbate (AsA), glutathione (GSH), enzymatic antioxidants activities and other anatomical features as compared to controls. In contrast, electrolytes, such as SS and/or FS under salt stress compared to controls (SS and FS using tap water) were significantly decreased. The best results were obtained when SS was combined with FS via Si or Pro. These alterations are brought about by the exogenous application of Si and/or Pro rendering these elements potentially useful in aiding sweet corn plants to acclimate successfully to saline soil.

Abstract Aquaponics is the combined culture of fish and plants in recirculating aquaculture systems, considered to be an innovative, eco-friendly and sustainable technology. The effect of the hydraulic loading rate (HLR) on the performance of fish and plants in the aquapoinc system was the main aim of this study. Four hydraulic loading rates were applied, 1.2, 1.8, 2.4 and 3.0 m day−1 under stocking density tilapia fish of 5 kg m−3 and lettuce population of 25 plant m−2 for a period of January to March, 2023. Water parameters, plant and fish parameters were determined. The most important results revealed that the highest plant nutrients removal was at HLR of 2.4 m day−1. The highest value of water parameters were found at the HLR of 2.4 m day−1. Root length increased with increasing HLR. Fresh and dry shoot and root weight values were higher at 2.4 m day−1 compared to other treatments under study. Meanwhile, fish growth parameter showed higher values at the HLR of 3.0 m day−1 compared to other treatments. The highest values of weight gain, feed growth rate, specific growth rate and feed conversion ratio were 81.72 g, 1.36 g day−1, 1.88% day−1 and 1.20 g feed g−1 fish, respectively, for all treatments under study.

Abstract Air pollution represents one of the major environmental stressors with serious implications on human health and ecosystem health. Recently remote sensing imageries; as an alternative cost and time-effective method compared with regular monitoring techniques, were used for provision of appropriate data concerning air quality over large areas. In this context, Sentinel-5P satellite provides high-resolution images of atmospheric pollutants including nitrogen dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide (CO) and particulate matter (PM). The current work aims to delineate vulnerability of densely populated areas in Northern-Egypt to air pollution through retrieving CO and PM2.5 from Sentinel-5P images and validate the retrieved data through simultaneous In-Situ measurements. For this purpose, our approach comprised four-step methodology; data acquisition on study area, data manipulation, validation of retrieved air quality data and mapping the vulnerability to air pollution. Based on the data retrieved from the imagery, a composite vulnerability index for each CO and PM2.5 value was developed delineating the most vulnerable areas to air pollution in the Northern Nile Delta region. Such results revealed that Sentinel-5P imagery can serve as a valuable tool for monitoring air quality and assessing vulnerability of densely populated areas to air pollution. Accordingly, it can be concluded that the applied Sentinel-5P based model can be applied effectively for other air pollutants and can be extrapolated to other areas with similar and/or different environmental settings.

Abstract The basil leaves were dried different sources of energy at different loading rates. Using hybrid solar drying compared to the conventional source of energy such as fossil and propane. Drying parameters were studied. Also, product quality was assessed under study treatments. The results indicated that the higher accumulated weight loss of basil leaves (75.56%) were obtained at 25 kg m−2 loading rate and solar drying system. The highest rate of the decrease in moisture content of basil leaves was happened at the 45 kg m−2 loading rates. Meanwhile, the lowest rate of the decrease in moisture content of basil leaves was found at 15 kg m−2 loading rates. The highest drying rate of basil leaves (219.54 gwater kg−1 h−1) was obtained at the loading rate of 15 kg m−2. The highest values of total chlorophyll and color of basil leaves 745.9 and 36.35 were found for solar dryer. The lowest values of total chlorophyll and color of basil leaves 703.5 and 31.66 were found for diesel dryer. The drying efficiency ranged from 33.98 to 40.33% for all batch loads. The highest essential oil yield obtained for solar dryer, the lowest essential oil yield occurred for diesel dryer. The highest value of volatile compounds with found for solar dryer. The total costs for basil drying were 19.73, 26.70 and 23.93 LE h−1 for solar, diesel and propane dryers, respectively. Also, the total costs of basil drying were 8.77, 13.15 and 12.27 LE kg−1 dried for solar, diesel and propane dryers, respectively.

Abstract The main aim of this study is to improve productivity, physical and chemical properties of the fruits and fruit quality of Eureka Lemon trees while lowering production costs by investigating the use of different NPK alternative sources (slow release, and bio) to reduce the use of chemical NPK fertilizers. Ten treatments of NPK fertilizers were applied. The results indicate that the highest values of yield (111.0 and 114.0 kg/tree) were found with 100% chemical NPK (control) for both first and second seasons, respectively. The lemon fruit weight ranged from 131.3 to 152.4 and 131.4 to 153.5 g for first and second seasons, respectively, for all treatments under study. The highest values of fruit length and fruit diameter were found with 100% chemical NPK (control) for both two seasons. The highest values of juice quality parameters (TSS, juice acidity, TSS/acid ratio and vitamin C concentration) responded favorably to higher chemical NPK treatment rates. The highest values of TSS, juice acidity, TSS/Acid ratio, and vitamin C concentration were 9.45%, 6.25%, 1.524 and 4.27 mg/100 g, respectively, were found with 100% chemical NPK (control) for both two seasons. Meanwhile, the lowest value of total sugar was found with 100% chemical NPK (control) for both two seasons.

Abstract Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) is one of the most common congenital cardiovascular diseases. CoA patients frequently undergo surgical repair, but hypertension (HTN) is still common. The current treatment guideline has revealed irreversible changes in structure and function, yet revised severity guidelines have not been proposed. Our objective was to quantify temporal alterations in mechanical stimuli and changes in arterial geometry in response to the range of CoA severities and durations (i.e. age of treatment) seen clinically. Rabbits were exposed to CoA resulting in peak-to-peak blood pressure gradient (BPGpp) severities of ≤ 10, 10–20, and ≥ 20 mmHg for a duration of ~ 1, 3, or 20 weeks using permanent, dissolvable, and rapidly dissolvable sutures. Elastic moduli and thickness were estimated from imaging and longitudinal fluid–structure interaction (FSI) simulations were conducted at different ages using geometries and boundary conditions from experimentally measured data. Mechanical stimuli were characterized including blood flow velocity patterns, wall tension, and radial strain. Experimental results show vascular alternations including thickening and stiffening proximal to the coarctation with increasing severity and/or duration of CoA. FSI simulations indicate wall tension in the proximal region increases markedly with coarctation severity. Importantly, even mild CoA induced stimuli for remodeling that exceeds values seen in adulthood if not treated early and using a BPGpp lower than the current clinical threshold. The findings are aligned with observations from other species and provide some guidance for the values of mechanical stimuli that could be used to predict the likelihood of HTN in human patients with CoA.

Abstract In the present study, flax fiber based semicarbazide biosorbent was prepared in two successive steps. In the first step, flax fibers were oxidized using potassium periodate (KIO4) to yield diadehyde cellulose (DAC). Dialdehyde cellulose was, then, refluxed with semicarbazide.HCl to produce the semicarbazide functionalized dialdehyde cellulose (DAC@SC). The prepared DAC@SC biosorbent was characterized using Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) and N2 adsorption isotherm, point of zero charge (pHPZC), elemental analysis (C:H:N), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. The DAC@SC biosorbent was applied for the removal of the hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) ions and the alizarin red S (ARS) anionic dye (individually and in mixture). Experimental variables such as temperature, pH, and concentrations were optimized in detail. The monolayer adsorption capacities from the Langmuir isotherm model were 97.4 mg/g and 18.84 for Cr(VI) and ARS, respectively. The adsorption kinetics of DAC@SC indicated that the adsorption process fit PSO kinetic model. The obtained negative values of ΔG and ΔH indicated that the adsorption of Cr(VI) and ARS onto DAC@SC is a spontaneous and exothermic process. The DAC@SC biocomposite was successfully applied for the removal of Cr(VI) and ARS from synthetic effluents and real wastewater samples with a recovery (R, %) more than 90%. The prepared DAC@SC was regenerated using 0.1 M K2CO3 eluent. The plausible adsorption mechanism of Cr(VI) and ARS onto the surface of DAC@SC biocomposite was elucidated.

Abstract The bio-composite films based on Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) reinforced with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and Titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) were developed. Some physical and mechanical properties: Tensile strength (TS), elongation (E), Young’s elastic modulus (EM), water vapor permeability (WVP) and transparency were determined. Antibacterial properties of these films were also studied. The tensile strength values of HPMC film reinforced with Ag NPs and TiO2-NPs and HPMC without nanoparticles were 39.24, 143.87 and 157.92 MPa, respectively. Elongation of the HMPC film was less than the HPMC film reinforced with AgNPs and TiO2-NPs, the results were 2, 35 and 42%, respectively. Additionally, Young’s elastic modulus of HMPC film was determined to be 19.62 MPa and the HPMC film reinforced with AgNPs and TiO2-NPs were 4.11 and 3.76 MPa, respectively. The values of WVP of HMPC film was higher than the HMPC film reinforced with AgNPs and TiO2-NPs, where they were 0.5076 × 10−3, 0.4596 × 10−3 and 0.4504 × 10−3 (g/msPa), respectively. Nano-composite films demonstrated strong antibacterial activity against tested pathogen bacteria in the contact surface zone. The antibacterial activites of AgNPs (~ 10 nm) at 80 ppm were more active than 20 and 40 ppm against foodborne pathogen i.e. Bacillus cereus and Escherichia coli, the inhibition zone diameters were 9 and 10 mm, respectively. As well, TiO2-NPs (~ 50 nm) at 80 ppm were more active than 20 and 40 ppm against B. cereus and Salmonella Typhimurium, the inhibition zone diameters were11 and 10 mm, respectively.

Abstract Energy scarcity and conventional energy problems are the main reason of finding a renewable source of energy which is cheap and environmental friendly, therefore, biodiesel production is one of the most promising solutions of this problem. Also, Egyptian castor is one of the most important crops for oil production compared with other commonly used oil crops. The main aim of this study is to enhance the production of bio-oil from Egyptian castor seeds by using microwave and ultrasonic as pre-treatments. To achieve that, the effects of extraction screw speed (20, 40 and 60 rpm) and temperature (100, 150, 200 and 250 °C) on oil extraction yield and quality, extraction energy requirements and extraction time and were studied. Also, the effect of pretreatment conditions of microwave at three levels of power (Low, Med and High) and different times (1, 2 and 3 min) and pretreatment condition ultrasonic with different temperatures (40, 60 and 80 °C) and different times (15, 30 and 45 min) for castor seeds before extraction with the optimum condition of the screw press on oil extraction yield from castor seeds, extraction energy, extraction time and quality of the oil extracted. The results indicate that the optimum conditions oil extraction by screw press were 200 °C extraction temperature and 60 rpm screw speed. It could be seen that the extraction oil yield, extraction energy requirements and extraction time were 35.59%, 18.68 and 1.86 min, respectively. Microwave pretreatments had better on oil yield and energy required for extraction compared to ultrasonic pretreatments, where, microwave pretreatments recorded high oil yield and lower energy requirements compared to the ultrasonic pretreatments. Oil yield ranged from 32.67 to 37.41% compared to 13.29 to 39.83% in literature. The time required for extraction was ranged from 1.77 to 2.00 and 1.79 to 2.21 min for microwave and ultrasonic pretreatments, respectively. The pretreatment improved properties of the extracted oil.

Abstract Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as an alkaline activator presents a vital limitation in the mass production of alkali-activated binders due to its severe effect on users’ safety. In this study, safe and sustainable one-part alkali-activated slag mixes (OP-AAS) were prepared through an efficient microwave sintering for a mixture of active amorphous ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and sodium hydroxide powder (NaOH). Different microwave-sintered powders were prepared using microwave energy of power 900 W for the mixture at different treatment periods (10, 20, and 30 min). Fresh and hardened properties of different OP-AAS mixes were studied. Moreover, the phase composition and microstructure were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Cytotoxicity/viability testing was performed to evaluate the cell death induced by the developed materials to measure their safety for the user. According to compressive strength, cytotoxicity/viability analysis, environmental impact and cost calculation of developed OP-AAS, it is concluded that employing microwave sintering for a short duration is sufficient to produce safe binding materials with adequate mechanical properties suitable for commercial applications in the construction sector.

Abstract In the current scenario, scaling up the microbial production of nanoparticles with diverse biological applications is an emerging prospect for NPs’ sustainable industry. Thus, this paper was conducted to develop a suitable applicative process for the myco-fabrication of cobalt-ferrite (CoFeNPs), selenium (SeNPs), and zinc oxide (ZnONPs) nanoparticles. A strain improvement program using gamma irradiation mutagenesis was applied to improve the NPs-producing ability of the fungal strains. The achieved yields of CoFeNPs, SeNPs, and ZnONPs were intensified by a 14.47, 7.85, and 22.25-fold increase from the initial yield following gamma irradiation and isolation of stable mutant strains. The myco-fabricated CoFeNPs, SeNPs, and ZnONPs were then exploited to study their wound healing, and anti-inflammatory. In addition, the acetylcholinesterase inhibition activities of the myco-fabricated NPs were evaluated and analyzed by molecular docking. The obtained results confirmed the promising wound healing, anti-inflammatory, and acetylcholinesterase inhibition potentials of the three types of NPs. Additionally, data from analyzing the interaction of NPs with acetylcholinesterase enzyme by molecular docking were in conformation with the experimental data.

Abstract A five weeks biological experiment was planned to investigate the impacts of dietary supplementation with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) synthesized by the endophytic fungus Alternaria tenuissima on productive performance, carcass traits, organ relative weights, serum biochemical parameters, histological alteration in some internal organs and concentration of this element in the serum, liver, thigh and breast muscle in broiler chicks. A total of 108 3-day-old commercial broiler chicks (Cobb 500) were individually weighed and equally distributed in a completely randomized design arrangement according to the dose of ZnONPs supplementation into 3 dietary experimental groups. There were 6 replications having 6 birds per replicate (n = 36/ treatment) for each treatment. The three experiential dietary treatments received corn-soybean meal-based diets enhanced with 0 (control), 40 and 60 mg/kg diet of ZnONPs respectively with feed and water were provided ad libitum consumption through 5 weeks life span. Present results indicated that after 5 weeks of feeding trial and as compared to control, the ZnONPs supplementation groups recorded higher body weight, improved feed consumption, feed conversion ratio and performance index. Serum biochemical analyses revealed that serum cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein and uric acid decreased significantly, while high density lipoprotein and liver enzyme concentrations were increased significantly. Meanwhile, zinc accumulation in serum, liver and breast and thigh muscle were linearly increased with increasing zinc supplementation. It could be concluded that supplementation of ZnONPs to broiler diet at 40 or 60 mg/kg improved productive performance, birds' physiological status and the lower levels Zn (40 mg/kg diet) revealed promising results and can be used as an effective feed additive in broilers.

Abstract A series of (Z)-N-(adamantan-1-yl)-3,4-diarylthiazol-2(3H)-imines (5a-r) was synthesized via condensation of 1-(adamantan-1-yl)-3-arylthioureas (3a-c) with various aryl bromomethyl ketones (4a-f). The structures of the synthesized compounds were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and by X-ray crystallography. The in vitro inhibitory activities of the synthesized compounds were assessed against a panel of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and pathogenic fungi. Compounds 5c, 5g, 5l, 5m, and 5q displayed potent broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, while compounds 5a and 5o showed activity against the tested Gram-positive bacteria. Compounds 5b, 5l and 5q displayed potent antifungal activity against Candida albicans. In addition, the synthesized compounds were evaluated for anti-proliferative activity towards five human tumor cell lines. The optimal anti-proliferative activity was attained by compounds 5e and 5k which showed potent inhibitory activity against all the tested cell lines. Molecular docking analysis reveals that compounds 5e and 5k can occupy the positions of NAD cofactor and the histone deacetylase inhibitor EX527 at the active site of SIRT1 enzyme.

Abstract A number of biopigment applications in various industrial sectors are gaining importance due to the growing consumer interest in their natural origin. Thus, this work was conducted to valorize endophytic fungi as an efficient production platform for natural pigments. A promising strain isolated from leaves of Origanum majorana was identified as Monascus ruber SRZ112 produced several types of pigments. The nature of the pigments, mainly rubropunctamine, monascin, ankaflavin, rubropunctatin, and monascorubrin in the fungal extract was studied by LC/ESI–MS/MS analyses. As a first step towards developing an efficient production of red pigments, the suitability of seven types of agro-industrial waste was evaluated. The highest yield of red pigments was obtained using potato peel moistened with mineral salt broth as a culture medium. To increase yield of red pigments, favourable culture conditions including incubation temperature, incubation period, pH of moistening agent, inoculum concentration, substrate weight and moisture level were evaluated. Additionally, yield of red pigments was intensified after the exposure of M. ruber SRZ112 spores to 1.00 KGy gamma rays. The final yield was improved by a 22.12-fold increase from 23.55 to 3351.87 AU g−1. The anticancer and antioxidant properties of the pigment’s extract from the fungal culture were also studied. The obtained data indicated activity of the extract against human breast cancer cell lines with no significant cytotoxicity against normal cell lines. The extract also showed a free radical scavenging potential. This is the first report, to our knowledge, on the isolation of the endophytic M. ruber SRZ112 strain with the successful production of natural pigments under solid-state fermentation using potato peel as a substrate.

Abstract A novel nano-palladium (II) Schiff base complex (C1) is synthesized by the reaction between palladium chloride and the Schiff base N, N’-1, 2-phenylene) bis (3 -aminobenzamide (A1). The prepared compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, Ultraviolet–Visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). A combined solvent sublation-ICP OES methodology has been studied for the preconcentration, separation and determination of trace palladium (II) in media of diverse origin using the Schiff base ligand (A1). The different experimental variables that affect the sublation efficiency (S, %) were thoroughly investigated viz.: pH of sample solution; amounts of A1, Pd (II) and TBAB; type and amounts of surfactants, types of organic solvent, temperature and stirring time. The method involves the determination of trace palladium (II) after selective separation by solvent sublation, thus eliminating the effect of foreign ions and increasing the sensitivity. Also, palladium is determined directly in the organic phase, which decreases the determination time and its loss during determination. At optimum conditions, the linear range of Pd (II) was 10.0–100.0 ngmL−1. The coefficient of determination, the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 0.9943, 21.29 ngL−1 and 64.5 ngL−1, respectively. This sublation method was applied to real samples and recoveries of more than 95% were obtained in the spiked samples with a preconcentration factor of 100. The mechanism of solvent sublatation of the TBA.[PdII-(A1)2] ion pairs is discussed. The computational studying was estimated to approve the geometry of the isolated solid compounds.

Abstract The blood flow through stenotic artery is one of the important research area in computational fluid mechanics due to its application in biomedicine. Aim of this research work is to investigate the impact of nanoparticles on the characteristics of human blood flow in a stenosed blood artery. In under consideration problem Newtonian fluid is assumed as human blood. Newtonian fluid flows through large blood vessels (more than 300 μm). The constitutive equations together with the boundary conditions are diminished to non-dimensional form by using boundary layer approximation and similarity transfiguration to attain the solution of velocity and temperature distribution of blood flow through arterial stenosis numerically with the help of Matlab bvp4c. The results for physical quantities at cylindrical surface are calculated and their effects are also presented through tables. The heat transfer rate increases throughout the stenosed artery with the concentration of copper nanoparticle. Velocity curve decreases by increasing the values of flow parameter and nanoparticle volume fraction. Temperature curve increases due to increase in the values of nanoparticle volume fraction and decrease in Prandtl number.

Abstract The main aim of this study is to use the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques to determine the optimum site to collect the residues in order to reduce cost and increase the benefits. To achieve these three scenarios were studied to reach the best collection sites for recycling rice straw in Sinbilawin center. The results indicate that the first scenario: The result was forty (40) collection sites in this status the cost of transfer will be very high because the collecting starts from inside village to the 40 sites and transfer to main sites to recycle operation. The second scenario: The total lengths of roads are not much then the cost of transfer is low and save time and efforts. The third scenario: The result was five collecting sites. It was shortest length and lowest cost. Transportation costs in the first scenario were difficult to calculate because of the difficulty to access a network of documented roads from satellite maps to use it with the GIS program. The total internal transport costs were 987,308.86 and 826,966.43 L.E (Egyptian pound, $ = 19.15 L.E) for second and third scenarios, respectively. The average transport costs per ton were 17 and 14 L.E/ton for the second and third scenarios, respectively. Also, the total lengths of roads were 817.62 and 615.65 km for the second and third scenarios, respectively.

Abstract The main aim of this research is to study the effect of flow rate, diameter and number of nozzles on the rotational velocity, impulse force and average velocity of water in circular fish tanks. The results indicated that, the rotational velocity increases with increasing flow rates from 5 to 75 m3 h−1 by using 10 and 15 mm nozzles diameter with nozzles number of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30. The same results were also obtained when 20 and 25 mm nozzle diameter with nozzles number of 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 were used. The impulse force of water decreases with increasing nozzle diameter from 10.0 to 15.0 mm with 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 nozzles and from 20.0 to 25.0 mm with 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 nozzles. When the nozzle diameter increased from 10 to 25 mm the impulse force of water decreased with 15 nozzles. The average velocity of water decreases with increasing nozzles diameter from 10.0 to 15.0 mm with 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 nozzles and from 20.0 to 25.0 mm with 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 nozzles. When the nozzle diameter increased from 10 to 25 mm, the average velocity ranged from 1.07 to 48.76 cm s−1 for all treatments under study.

Abstract Water deficit has devastating impacts on legume production, particularly with the current abrupt climate changes in arid environments. The application of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) is an effective approach for producing natural nitrogen and attenuating the detrimental effects of drought stress. This study investigated the influence of inoculation with the PGPR Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar viciae (USDA 2435) and Pseudomonas putida (RA MTCC5279) solely or in combination on the physio-biochemical and agronomic traits of five diverse Vicia faba cultivars under well-watered (100% crop evapotranspiration [ETc]), moderate drought (75% ETc), and severe drought (50% ETc) conditions in newly reclaimed poor-fertility sandy soil. Drought stress substantially reduced the expression of photosynthetic pigments and water relation parameters. In contrast, antioxidant enzyme activities and osmoprotectants were considerably increased in plants under drought stress compared with those in well-watered plants. These adverse effects of drought stress reduced crop water productivity (CWP) and seed yield‐related traits. However, the application of PGPR, particularly a consortium of both strains, improved these parameters and increased seed yield and CWP. The evaluated cultivars displayed varied tolerance to drought stress: Giza-843 and Giza-716 had the highest tolerance under well-watered and moderate drought conditions, whereas Giza-843 and Sakha-4 were more tolerant under severe drought conditions. Thus, co-inoculation of drought-tolerant cultivars with R. leguminosarum and P. putida enhanced their tolerance and increased their yield and CWP under water-deficit stress conditions. This study showed for the first time that the combined use of R. leguminosarum and P. putida is a promising and ecofriendly strategy for increasing drought tolerance in legume crops.

Background Cooked dried beans are commonly consumed in many countries and are known in Egypt as Ful medames. Adding synthetic colors to keep the dishes more attractive may have toxic effects on the human body, as it may be unsafe to consume potentially microbial contaminated foods, especially when obtained from street vendors. Aim The aim of this study was to detect the types of artificial colors added to cooked faba bean (Ful medames) by street vendors in Egypt and highlight their health hazards and microbial hazards. Materials and methods A total of 100 convincing samples were collected from street vendors from four large Egyptian cities. The coloring agents were extracted and purified from samples using the hydrochloric acid extraction method followed by separation using ascending paper chromatography. Total bacterial counts, coliforms, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, and mold and yeast counts were used for microbial tests on 24 samples obtained from Cairo and Giza cities. Findings Artificial colors were detected in 46% of samples. From the total positive samples, sunset yellow, tartrazine, or both combined were identified in 26.1, 30.4, and 41.3%, respectively. Carmoisine was detected combined with tartrazine in only one sample. Giza and Cairo cities recorded the highest positive samples (64.3 and 42.9%, respectively), followed by Mansoura (10%). No added colors were detected in Mahala samples. Coliforms, mold, yeast, and bacillus were detected in most of the samples that were subjected to microbiological examination, whereas S. aureus was not found in any of the examined samples. Conclusion Overall, 46% of the examined samples from street vendors contained artificial colors, mainly tartrazine and sunset yellow, although the authorities of Egyptian standards do not allow any artificial additives to these types of food. Most positive samples were from more urban cities. Microbial contaminants found in the examined samples may be due to unhygienic approaches in such areas and lack of sanitary practices of street vendors. This also predisposes consumers to the risk of severe public health challenges. Recommendations The society should be made aware about the health hazards of the incessant usage of synthetic food colors. The public should be encouraged to add natural food coloring, such as carrots, through home cooking instead. Moreover, strict monitoring of street vendors for food safety regulation should be done by competent authorities.

This paper provides a novel model that is more relevant than the well-known conventional distributions, which stand for the two-parameter distribution of the lifetime modified Kies Topp-Leone (MKTL) model. Compared to the current distributions, the most recent one gives an unusually varied collection of probability functions. The density and hazard rate functions exhibit features, demonstrating that the model is flexible to several kinds of data. Multiple statistical characteristics have been obtained. To estimate the parameters of the MKTL model, we employed various estimation techniques, including maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) and the Bayesian estimation approach. We compared the traditional reliability function model to the fuzzy reliability function model within the reliability analysis framework. A complete Monte Carlo simulation analysis is conducted to determine the precision of these estimators. The suggested model outperforms competing models in real-world applications and may be chosen as an enhanced model for building a statistical model for the COVID-19 data and other data sets with similar features.

Technology for anticipating wind speed can improve the safety and stability of power networks with heavy wind penetration. Due to the unpredictability and instability of the wind, it is challenging to accurately forecast wind power and speed. Several approaches have been developed to improve this accuracy based on processing time series data. This work proposes a method for predicting wind speed with high accuracy based on a novel weighted ensemble model. The weight values in the proposed model are optimized using an adaptive dynamic grey wolf-dipper throated optimization (ADGWDTO) algorithm. The original GWO algorithm is redesigned to emulate the dynamic group-based cooperative to address the difficulty of establishing the balance between exploration and exploitation. Quick bowing movements and a white breast, which distinguish the dipper throated birds hunting method, are employed to improve the proposed algorithm exploration capability. The proposed ADGWDTO algorithm optimizes the hyperparameters of the multi-layer perceptron (MLP), K-nearest regressor (KNR), and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) regression models. A dataset from Kaggle entitled Global Energy Forecasting Competition 2012 is employed to assess the proposed algorithm. The findings confirm that the proposed ADGWDTO algorithm outperforms the literature's state-of-the-art wind speed forecasting algorithms. The proposed binary ADGWDTO algorithm achieved average fitness of 0.9209 with a standard deviation fitness of 0.7432 for feature selection, and the proposed weighted optimized ensemble model (Ensemble using ADGWDTO) achieved a root mean square error of 0.0035 compared to state-of-the-art algorithms. The proposed algorithm's stability and robustness are confirmed by statistical analysis of several tests, such as one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Wilcoxon's rank-sum.

Abstract In this present article the entropy generation, induced magnetic field, and mixed convection stagnant point flow of pseudoplastic nano liquid over an elastic surface is investigated. The Buongiorno model is employed in modeling. Through the use of the boundary layer idea, flow equations are transformed from compact to component form. The system of equations is solved numerically. The Induced magnetic spectrum falls near the boundary and grows further away as the reciprocal of the magnetic Prandtl number improves. The fluctuation of induced magnetic rises while expanding the values of mixed convection, thermophoresis, and magnetic parameters, whereas it declines for increment in the Brownian and stretching parameters. The velocity amplitude ascends and temperature descends for the rise in magnetic parameter. The mass transfer patterns degrade for the higher amount of buoyancy ratio while it boosts by the magnification of mixed convection and stretching parameters. Streamlines behavior is also taken into account against the different amounts of mixed convection and magnetic parameters. The pseudoplastic nanofluids are applicable in all electronic devices for increasing the heating or cooling rate in them. Further, pseudoplastic nanofluids are also applicable in reducing skin friction coefficient.

Abstract The main aim of this research is to develop a mathematical model to predict the dissolved oxygen in recirculating aquaculture system. The oxygen consumption of the model through the fish respiration and nitrification and the oxygen addition of the model through oxygen generator and water pumping. The effect of different water temperatures (24, 26, 28, 30 and 32 °C) on the dissolved oxygen consumption through fish respiration, biofilter and nitrification and fish growth were studied. An experiment to measure oxygen consumed by fish respiration and biofilteration and fish growth with the growth period and to validate the model results was carried out. The oxygen consumption predicted by the model was in a good agreement with those measured by the system. The oxygen consumption by fish respiration ranged 12.04 to 47.53 g O2 m−3 h−1 experimentally, while it was from 12.01 to 46.06 g O2 m−3 h−1 theoretically. The predicted and measured oxygen consumption through biofilteration values ranged from 0.43 to 21.91 and 0.45 to 23.09 g O2 m−3 h−1, respectively. The individual fish weight from the system ranged from 3.00 to 209.52 g experimentally while it was from 3.00 to 226.25 g theoretically during the whole period.

Abstract In this article, the primary focus is to investigate the heat transfer effects with viscous compressible laminar flow in the permeable elliptic cylinder. The Reynolds number is kept 100 for flow to be laminar. The physics of heat transfer is selected to be coupled with the laminar flow. The results for particular step-size time for Velocity distribution, pressure profile, temperature profile, isothermal temperature contours, and drag coefficient have been analyzed. Mesh has been generated through COMSOL, mesh entities have been elaborated statistically. The maximum and minimum velocity profile is observed at the elliptical cylinder’s walls and upper, lower boundary respectively. The maximum velocity observed is 2.22 m/s. Pressure profile around elliptic corners is found maximum, distinct patterns are observed even under the influence of applied heat. Temperature is observed maximum at walls but it gradually increases as moving from the upper boundary towards the lower boundary. The isothermal contour patterns are observed maximum near the walls, drag coefficient of gradual decrease is observed. COMSOL multi-physics is utilized for mathematical modeling of problems and the Backward-Differentiation-Formula has been exploited to handle problems numerically. The results will help greatly to understand the characterizations of viscous fluids and in industries like air furnaces and automobile cooling systems.

Abstract Stretched flows have numerous applications in different industrial, biomedical and engineering processes. Current research is conducted to examine the flow phenomenon of Prandtl fluid model over a moveable surface. The phenomenon of mass and thermal transportation is based on generalized theory of Cattaneo–Christov which considers the involvement of relaxation times. In addition to these, variable characteristics of thermal conductivity and diffusion coefficient are considered as a function of temperature. The physical problem in Cartesian coordinate system is modeled via boundary layer theory which yields a coupled system of partial differential equations. Group scaling transportation is applied to model these PDEs system. The converted equations have been approximated via optimal homotopic scheme. The efficiency and validity of used approach has been shown by computing the error analysis and establishing a comparative study. It is noted that the enhancement in magnetic parameter plays a controlling role for velocity field and it augment the concentration and temperature fields. Furthermore, increase in thermal relaxation parameter and Prandtl number maintains the fluid temperature.

Abstract An automatic feeder for fish feeding was manufactured and evaluated successively. Feed pellet size, air flow rate and feeder screw speed were the most important factors affecting the performance and efficiency of the automatic feeder. It was tested at 3 sizes of pellets (1, 2 and 3 mm), 3 air flow rates (10, 15 and 20 m3 min−1) and 5 screw speeds (180, 360, 540, 720 and 900 rpm). The automatic feeder productivity, efficiency, specific energy consumption and costs were determined. The obtained results indicated that the automatic feeder productivity increases with increasing feed pellets size, air flow rate and rotational speed of screw treatments under study, the automatic feeder efficiency increased with increasing rotational speed of screw until it reached the highest value at 540 rpm and then remain constant at 720–900 rpm and after that decreased with increasing speed. Meanwhile, the specific energy consumption of automatic feeder decreased with increasing feed pellets size, air flow rate and rotational speed of screw treatments under study. The total cost of using automatic feeder ranged from 0.09 to 0.16 EGP kg−1 ($ = 15.63 EGP) for all treatments under study. This feeder will save time, effort and cost for fish industry.

Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy characterized by a rise in the intraocular pressure (IOP) leading to optic nerve damage. Bimatoprost is a prostaglandin analogue used to reduce the elevated IOP in patients with glaucoma. The currently available dosage forms for Bimatoprost suffer from relatively low ocular bioavailability. The objective of this study was to fabricate and optimize solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) containing Bimatoprost for ocular administration for the management of glaucoma. Bimatoprost-loaded SLNs were fabricated by solvent evaporation/ultrasonication technique. Glyceryl Monostearate (GMS) was adopted as solid lipid and poloxamer 407 as surfactant. Optimization of SLNs was conducted by central composite design. The optimized formulation was assessed for average particle size, entrapment efficiency (%), zeta potential, surface morphology, drug release study, sterility test, isotonicity test, Hen’s egg test-chorioallantoic membrane (HET-CAM) test and histopathology studies. The optimized Bimatoprost-loaded SLNs formulation had an average size of 183.3 ± 13.3 nm, zeta potential of −9.96 ± 1.2 mV, and encapsulation efficiency percentage of 71.8 ± 1.1%. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study revealed the nearly smooth surface of formulated particles with a nano-scale size range. In addition, SLNs significantly sustained Bimatoprost release for up to 12 h, compared to free drug (p < 005). Most importantly, HET-CAM test nullified the irritancy of the formulation was verified its tolerability upon ocular use, as manifested by a significant reduction in mean irritation score, compared to positive control (1% sodium dodecyl sulfate; p < 0.001). Histopathology study inferred the absence of any signs of cornea tissue damage upon treatment with Bimatoprost optimized formulation. Collectively, it was concluded that SLNs might represent a viable vehicle for enhancing the corneal permeation and ocular bioavailability of Bimatoprost for the management of glaucoma.

Abstract Matrix nanocomposites are high performance materials possessing unusual features along with unique design possibilities. Due to extraordinary thermophysical characteristic contained by these matrix nanocomposites materials they are useful in several areas ranging from packaging to biomedical applications. Being an environment friendly, utilization of nanocomposites offer new technological opportunities for several sectors of aerospace, automotive, electronics and biotechnology. In this regards, current pagination is devoted to analyze thermal features of viscous fluid flow between orthogonally rotating disks with inclusion of metallic matrix nanocomposite (MMNC) and ceramic matrix nanocomposites (CMNC) materials. Morphological aspects of these nanomaterials on flow and heat transfer characteristics has been investigated on hybrid viscous fluid flow. Mathematical structuring of problem along with empirical relations for nanocomposites materials are formulated in the form of partial differential equations and later on converted into ordinary differential expressions by using suitable variables. Solution of constructed coupled differential system is found by collaboration of Runge–Kutta and shooting methods. Variation in skin friction coefficient at lower and upper walls of disks along with measurement about heat transfer rate are calculated against governing physical parameters. Impact of flow concerning variables on axial, radial components of velocity and temperature distribution are also evaluated. Contour plots are also drawn to explore heat and thermal profiles. Comparison and critical analysis of MMNc and CMNc have been presented at lower and upper porous disks. Our computed analysis indicates that hybrid nanofluids show significant influence as compared to simple nanofluids with the permutation of the different shape factors.

Abstract The main aim of this paper was to investigate the possibility of growing basil under three soilless systems (aeroponic, hydroponic and peatmoss slab systems). A model was developed to predict the nutrients consumption by basil plants. Shoot and root height, fresh and dry mass of whole plant, nutrients uptake, and oil content were studied during the growth period (after 4 and 7 weeks from transplanting). The results indicated that the shoot lengths of basil plants were 71.67 ± 2.89, 65.67 ± 1.15 and 62.33 ± 2.31 cm at the end of growth period for aeroponic, hydroponic and peatmoss slabs, respectively. The highest value of root height of basil plants was 37.67 ± 6.66 cm for aeroponic system. The dry mass of shoot of basil plants ranged from 28.48 ± 0.91 to 44.77 ± 0.97 and 72.98 ± 0.83 to 117.93 ± 1.40 g plant−1 after 4 and 7 weeks from transplanting, respectively. The highest values of the N, P, K, Ca and Mg uptakes were 753.99 ± 5.65, 224.88 ± 3.05, 449.75 ± 4.59, 529.12 ± 6.63 and 112.44 ± 1.67 mg plant−1 at the end of experimental period, respectively. The basil oil content ranged from 1.129 (1.11%) to 2.520 (1.80%) and 2.664 (1.42%) to 6.318 (1.44%) g plant−1 after 4 and 7 weeks from transplanting, respectively at the same pervious order. The production costs of basil plant were 2.93, 5.27 and 6.24 EGP kg−1 of plant. The model results were in a reasonable agreement with the experimental ones.

Abstract Scarcity of water and the small area of the agricultural land are considered as the crucial environmental issues challenged the Arabian Gulf countries. In this study, experiments were conducted to identify the salt tolerance during the germination and the seedling stages of some native halophytes in the State of Qatar. Seeds of eight native species (Salsola setifera, Halopeplis perfoliata, Caroxylon imbricatum, Suaeda aegyptiaca, Acacia tortilis, Limonium axillare, Tetraena qatarensis and Aeluropus lagopoides) were investigated. Except for Tetraena qatarensis, Acacia tortilis and Suaeda aegyptiaca, all achieved ≥ 30% of seed germination at a concentration of 200 mM NaCl. Around 30% of Salsola setifera seeds were able to germinate in a salt concentration of 400 mM. Germination recovery of seeds that have been treated with 800 mM NaCl for 3 weeks was the greatest for Halopeplis perfoliata (94%) and the lowest for Aeluropus lagopoides (22%). Five halophytes were investigated for seedling growth under saline irrigation ranged from 0 to 600 mM NaCl. No significant differences obtained in growth biomass of seedlings of each of Caroxylon imbricatum, Suaeda aegyptiaca and Tetraena qatarensis between saline and non-saline treatments.

Abstract Drought is one of the major environmental stresses that negatively affect the maize (Zea mays L.) growth and production throughout the world. Foliar applications of plant growth regulators, micronutrients or osmoprotectants for stimulating drought-tolerance in plants have been intensively reported. A controlled pot experiment was conducted to study the relative efficacy of salicylic acid (SA), zinc (Zn), and glycine betaine (GB) foliar applications on morphology, chlorophyll contents, relative water content (RWC), gas-exchange attributes, activities of antioxidant enzymes, accumulations of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and osmolytes, and yield attributes of maize plants exposed to two soil water conditions (85% field capacity: well-watered, 50% field capacity: drought stress) during critical growth stages. The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on global health, economies, and social systems. The crucial factor that determines the success of COVID-19 treatments is preventing the need for mechanical ventilation and intensive care admission. In the context of COVID-19, several treatments have been found to play a role in the disease’s progression and severity. Interleukins (ILs) have been identified as key mediators of the cytokine storm that can occur in severe cases of COVID-19, leading to respiratory failure and other complications. For instance, IL-1 antagonist (anakinra) and IL-6 antagonist (tocilizumab) are supposed to be promising treatments as well as cortisones for COVID-19. This prospective study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of anakinra or tocilizumab in addition to cortisone in preventing the progression of mild to moderate COVID-19 cases to severe intensive care admission. Biochemical and hematological parameters, such as D-dimer, ferritin, LDH, CRP, and white blood cells (WBCs), were measured after treatment with either anakinra or tocilizumab in addition to cortisone or cortisone alone. The study also recorded the number of deaths and patients admitted to intensive care. The results indicate that anakinra significantly improved outcomes and decreased the number of intensive care admissions compared to tocilizumab or cortisone alone. Therefore, anakinra may play a vital role in controlling the progression of COVID-19, and its use in mild to moderate cases may prevent the worsening of the disease to severe stages.

Among the various types of cancer, lung cancer accounts for the highest number of fatalities across the globe. A combination of different cancer chemotherapeutics is regarded as an effective strategy for clinical management of different cancers. Ganetespib (GAN) is a well-established hsp90 inhibitor with enhanced pharmacological properties in comparison with its first-generation counterparts. Previous preclinical studies have shown that GAN exerts significant effects against cancer cells; however, its therapeutic effects against non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) A549 cells, achieved by modulating the expression of the NF-κB/p65 signaling pathway, remains unexplored. In this study, the combinatorial effect of GAN and methotrexate (MTX) against lung carcinomas was investigated through both in silico and in vitro studies. A combinatorial treatment regimen of GAN/MTX exerted more significant cytotoxic effects (p < 0.001) against A549 cells than individual treatments. The GAN/MTX combination also instigated nuclear fragmentation followed by augmentation in intracellular ROS levels (p < 0.001). The elevated ROS in A549 cells upon exposure to GAN/MTX combinatorial regimen was concomitantly accompanied with a remarkable reduction in mitochondrial viability. In addition, it was observed that the GAN/MTX combination succeeded in elevating caspase-3 activity and downregulating the expression levels of anti-apoptotic mediators Bcl2 and survivin in NSCLC A549 cells. Most importantly, the GAN/MTX combinatorial regimen impeded the activation of the NF-kB/p65 signaling pathway via repression of the expression of E-cadherin and N-cadherin, which was confirmed by molecular docking studies. Collectively, these findings demonstrated the synergistic effect of the GAN/MTX combinatorial regimen in suppressing the growth of A549 cells by modulating the NF-κB/p65 signaling pathway.

Contact dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder with a highly variable prevalence worldwide. Smoking plays a crucial role in mediating inflammatory skin conditions such as contact dermatitis. The present study aimed to investigate the association between smoking status and contact dermatitis in the Saudi population. The patients in the present study were individuals older than 18 years who were diagnosed with contact dermatitis and received a patch test at the Department of Dermatology of King Saud University Medical City from March 2003 through February 2019. All patients were interviewed by phone to complete a specific pre-designed questionnaire to assess tobacco use or exposure history. The total number of enrolled patients in the study was 308 (91 males and 217 females), all with contact dermatitis. Data from the present study suggest that the prevalence of allergic contact dermatitis in smokers may be less than that in non-smokers. Moreover, the prevalence of irritant contact dermatitis in smokers is more significant than in non-smokers. Finally, left-hand contact dermatitis is significantly associated with smoking. Therefore, there is a strong association between smoking and irritant contact dermatitis, especially in the Saudi population, regarding the left hand. Further epidemiologic studies are needed to further explore the role of smoking in the occurrence of contact dermatitis and to explore the possible mechanisms.

Ticks and tick-borne pathogens (TTBPs) are listed among the most serious concerns harming Egyptian livestock’s productivity. Several reports on tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) from various geographical regions in the country were published. However, data on the molecular characterization of TBPs are the most beneficial for understanding the epidemiology of this important group of pathogens. In this study, we present the first meta-analysis on the molecular epidemiology and species diversity of TBPs infecting animals in Egypt. All published studies on TBPs were systematically collected from various databases (PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, the Egyptian Knowledge Bank, and Google Scholar). Data from eligible papers were extracted and subjected to various analyses. Seventy-eight studies were found to be eligible for inclusion. Furthermore, ticks infesting animals that were molecularly screened for their associated pathogens were also included in this study to display high species diversity and underline the high infection risk to animals. Theileria annulata was used as parasite model of TBPs to study the genetic diversity and transmission dynamics across different governorates of Egypt. This study extends cross-comparisons between all published molecular data on TBPs in Egypt and provides resources from Egyptian data in order to better understand parasite epidemiology, species diversity, and disease outcome as well as the development and implementation of prevention and control methods for public health, veterinary care practitioners, and animal owners all over the country.

The prevalence of Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in raw milk samples was estimated in different ruminants and Egyptian governorates. Of 13 bulk milk samples tested by ELISA, five (38.5%) were positive for antibodies to N. caninum, and two samples were additionally positive for antibodies to T. gondii, resulting in a seroprevalence of 15.4% for both T. gondii and co-infection. In individual milk samples (n = 171) from the same bulks, antibodies to N. caninum were detected in 25.7%, to T. gondii in 14%, and 3.5% had antibodies to both parasites. A strong correlation between the OD values of the bulk samples and of the relevant individual milk samples was found for T. gondii (Pearson r = 0.9759) and moderately strong for N. caninum (Pearson r = 0.5801). Risk factor assessment for individual milk samples revealed that antibodies to T. gondii were significantly influenced by animal species, while no risk factors were detected for N. caninum antibodies. Additionally, DNA of N. caninum was detected in a bulk milk sample of cattle for the first time in Egypt, and DNA of T. gondii was found in bulk milk samples of cattle, sheep and goats. This is the first study in Egypt in which bulk milk samples of different ruminants were tested for the presence of N. caninum and T. gondii antibodies and DNA. Both individual and bulk milk samples are useful tools for monitoring antibody response to N. caninum and T. gondii infections in different ruminants in Egypt.
