Background The appearance of high-density root obturating materials, such as gutta-percha and intracanal posts, on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans is substantially different from that seen in the specimen. This study evaluated the effectiveness of different CBCT software in the reduction of blooming artifacts when examining teeth with intracanal posts. Method The sample included 42 human single-rooted teeth with two types of posts: G1 – low-fusion alloy posts; G2 – gold alloy posts. CBCT scans were obtained using two scanners, PreXion 3D Elite® and Carestream 9000C 3D®. First, the posts were measured using a digital micrometer (standard reference, control). Post diameters were determined using the Blooming Artifact Reduction (BAR) tool of the e-Vol DX software and of the PreXion3D Image Analysis System. Statistical data were evaluated using the van Der Waerden nonparametric analysis of variance and, after that, normalized data were analyzed using the Tukey test. The level of significance was set at α = 5 %. Results There were no significant differences (p > 0.05) between the diameters of intracanal posts on the CT scans when the e-Vol DX was used, or when these results were compared with those obtained using a micrometer. There were significant differences in post diameters determined using the PreXion3D Image Analysis System when compared with the e-Vol DX and the micrometer values (p Conclusions The use of the e-Vol DX BAR filter eliminated blooming artifacts. There were no dimensional changes in the CBCT images of the low-fusion and gold alloy intracanal posts using the e-Vol DX BAR filter.

The use of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has shown promising results for the inflammatory modulation of tissue repair. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory potential of gallium arsenide (GaAs) LLLT in skin wound healing via (1) measurement of the temperature on the surface of the skin wound; (2) white blood cell count; and (3) histopathological examination. Skin lesions were induced on the dorsum of 20 Wistar rats, after which the animals were divided into two groups: a treatment group, subjected to GaAs LLLT, and a control group. Thermography was performed daily in all of the study animals until the end of the experiment. On the fourth day after lesion induction, whole blood was collected (white blood cell count), animals were euthanized, and skin lesions were biopsied (histopathological examination). There were no differences in the number of leukocytes and in the histopathological evaluations between the groups; however, the thermography analysis indicated an increase in temperature in the treated group. The anti-inflammatory activity of GaAs LLLT was not confirmed. The increase in temperature on the surface of the skin lesions after LLLT requires further elucidation because this result could not be justified by the direct action of LLLT.

In recent years, the Traditional Morlet Transform, Cross and Wavelet Coherence have been used as techniques to analyze time series from meteorological and climatic data, obtaining useful information. These techniques were used to study air temperature and relative air humidity, air pressure and wind variables from 2015 to 2017. The data was collected from a micrometeorological station of the Federal University of Mato Grosso State. The objective of the study was to obtain information regarding seasonal trends and effects. The Coherence constituted the normalized spectrum of the TWX, smoothed in time and scale. The seasonality of the region is characterized by the existence of two annual seasons, hot-humid and hot-dry seasons, qualitatively determining the energy levels of the urban cerrado ecosystem.

Aim This study aimed to assess the eruption of impacted teeth in cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) after alveolar bone graft. Materials and methods Research was carried out through a cross-sectional study at the Craniofacial Rehabilitation Center of the University General Hospital of the University of Cuiaba, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Variables related to cleft, cleft side, gender, age, laterality of cleft, impacted teeth, and orthodontic traction were analyzed. Results Forty-two patients treated at the institution from 2004 to 2011 were recruited. There were 54.76% males and 45.24% females. The age group between 9 and 11 years was most affected in 59.53% of cases. The unilateral cleft was the most prevalent (85.71%). A total of 57 impacted teeth were observed. Maxillary canine was the most prevalent impacted teeth (97.61%) and more frequent in transforamen incisor cleft (TIC) (76.3%). The orthodontic traction was needed in both maxillary canines and lateral incisor impacted teeth, 64.3 and 35.7% respectively. The orthodontic traction was needed only in TIC (p = 0.0101). Conclusion The canine teeth were the most prevalent, mainly related to the TIC and all impacted teeth erupted spontaneously in the preforamen incisor cleft (PIC) after placement of the bone graft. Clinical significance There was spontaneous eruption of impacted teeth after secondary alveolar bone graft in CLP.

The aim of this study was to correlate the root apex anatomies with external root resorption in patients orthodontically treated through panoramic radiography and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) methods. Two hundred and forty dental roots were evaluated by tomographic and radiograph images from thirty patients submitted to orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances was developed based on the technique of straight arc (Straightwire) with Roth prescription. Dental roots anatomy were classified based on shape as: Score 0 – normal root; Score 2 – short root; Score 2 – blunt; Score 3 – bent; and Score 4 – pipette shape. Measurements of external root resorption (ERR) were performed before and after orthodontic treatment by means of CBCT and panoramic radiograph. All patients and 72% of the 173 roots presented with ERR. The frequency of root type, the normal root (score 0) was 88.75% in panoramic radiography and only 18.75% for CBCT. The frequency of ERR was high in maxillary central incisors (73%), maxillary lateral incisors (73%), mandibular central incisors (72%), mandibular lateral incisors (70%). Statistical analysis showed no correlation between the methods, type root and tooth type (p < 0.05). The CBCT had better results for identifying apical roots resorption than panoramic radiograph, but the correlation between the type of root and ERR was not confirmed. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of impacted teeth in a subpopulation of Brazilian patients based on the retrospective analysis of panoramic radiographs obtained at an oral radiology clinic. Out of 1,977 panoramic radiographs, 1,352 fulfilled inclusion criteria, and 22,984 teeth were assessed. Data were statistically analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov's and Levene's tests; significance was set at 5%. The number of impacted teeth was assessed using analysis of variance and Tukey's post-hoc test. Our results showed significant differences for tooth type and patient age when analyzed separately (p < 0.05); gender did not show significant results (p > 0.05). Correlations between age and gender showed significant differences (p < 0.05), as did the correlations between age, gender and tooth type (p < 0.05). Mandibular molars were the teeth most frequently affected (p < 0.05), followed by maxillary molars (p < 0.05). Other tooth types did not present significant differences among themselves (p > 0.05). Patients aged 22 years or younger were the most frequent ones (p < 0.05). No significant differences were observed between age groups 37 and 51 years and 52+ (p > 0.05). According to the methodology here employed, gender did not affect tooth impaction, whereas age (22-36 years) and tooth type (mandibular third molars) strongly influenced results. The study of radiation entrance and exit dynamics and energy consumption in a system is important for understanding the environmental processes that rule the biosphere-atmosphere interactions of all ecosystems. This study provides an analysis of the interaction of energy in the form of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in the Pantanal, a Brazilian wetland forest, by studying the variation of PAR reflectance and its interaction with local rainfall. The study site is located in Private Reserve of Natural Heritage, Mato Grosso State, Brazil, where the vegetation is a monodominant forest of Vochysia divergens Phol. The results showed a high correlation between the reflection of visible radiation and rainfall; however, the behavior was not the same at the three heights studied. An analysis of the hourly variation of the reflected waves also showed the seasonality of these phenomena in relation to the dry and rainy seasons. A predictive model for PAR was developed with a neural network that has a hidden layer, and it showed a determination coefficient of 0.938. This model showed that the Julian day and time of measurements had an inverse association with the wind profile and a direct association with the relative humidity profile.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of Brazilian brown propolis as an intracanal medication against Enterococcus faecalis. Thirty dentin discs prepared from intact freshly extracted bovine maxillary central incisors were infected with E. faecalis for 21 days. The specimens were distributed into six groups according to the medicament used as follows: G1- calcium hydroxide paste; G2- Carbowax 400 (control group); G3- 20% brown propolis paste; G4- 40% brown propolis paste; G5- 20% brown propolis paste + calcium hydroxide paste; and G6- 40% brown propolis paste + calcium hydroxide paste. The experimental pastes were placed into the canal lumen and left for 14 days. After each period, irrigation was performed with sterile saline to remove the medicament, and the canals were dried with sterile paper points. The dentin chips were removed from the canals with sequential sterile round burs at low speed and were immediately collected in separate test tubes containing BHI broth. The tubes were incubated at 37°C, and microbial growth was analyzed by spectrophotometry after 15 days. All the experimental medications significantly reduced the number of viable bacteria. The G4 and G5 pastes were more effective than the G1 paste, with 35.8%, 41%, and 21.3% antibacterial activity, respectively. Brazilian brown propolis shows antibacterial capacity against E. faecalis.

Background: Eagle’s syndrome comprises a rare disorder caused by compression of an elongated or deformed styloid process or ossified/calcified stylohyoid ligament on neural and vascular structures. It is characterized by facial and neck pain and can be confused with a wide variety of facial neuralgias, oral and dental diseases and temporomandibular disorders. An imaging evaluation associated with a careful clinical examination, are mandatory in structuring a correct differential diagnosis and in the establishment of a proper therapeutic protocol. Aim: To investigate the prevalence of the elongated styloid process in a Central Brazilian population and its relation to gender, age and side. Materials and Methods: Digital panoramic radiographs of 736 patients (412 female and 324 male, with a mean age of 35.03 years) were consecutively selected from a private radiology clinic's secondary database. The apparent length of the styloid process was measured from the point where the styloid left the tympanic plate to the tip of the process by two specialists in dental radiology, with the help of the measuring tools on the accompanying software. Styloid process measuring more than 30 mm was considered elongated. The statistical analysis included frequency distribution and cross tabulation. The data were analysed by using Chi-squared tests. The level of significance was set at 5% for all analyses. Results: A total of 323 (43.89%) radiographic images were suggestive of elongated styloid process. No statistically significant difference was found between the genders, although a higher prevalence was noticed in female participants. Approximately, 31% of the elongated styloid process was observed in 18-53-year-old participants (p < 0.05). Two hundred and sixty seven styloid processes (36.28%) were elongated on both right and left sides. Conclusion: The prevalence of elongated styloid process was high and no statistically significant correlation was found between the presence of elongated styloid process and the studied variables with the exception of the age.

The expressive increase of the population of Cuiaba unleashed a disorderly growth of the city, accompanied by a deficient infrastructure and basic sanitation, thus establishing favorable conditions for the proliferation of vectors of dengue (Aedes aegypti) and yellow fever (Aedes albopictus) in the region, and these endowed great power of adaptation to environments inhabited by humans. Keeping this in view, the aim of this work was to analyze the influence of microclimatic factors in the fluctuations of the populations of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus in a school of the periphery of Cuiaba between January and August 2012, making use of the differentiated model of oviposition trap (ovitrap). The collection of the biotic data (number of eggs) was made in school Andre Avelino Ribeiro at intervals of fifteen days and the abiotic data: air temperature, relative humidity and rainfall been obtained by means of weather station of the National Institute for Space Research. The results indicated that precipitation was the only microclimatic factor at influencing the proliferation of the dengue vector in school. Significant differences were found for the number of eggs collected in the rainy season in relation to the dry season. However, it was observed expressive values for the number of eggs in this season, indicating that even in the dry period the incidence of the species may be high. Furthermore, the high indices of egg density and vector, as well as of positivity of the ovitrap observed in school have revealed that the place configures itself as a pole of proliferation and dissemination of specie Aedes aegypti.

The gross primary production (GPP) of ecosystems is an important variable in the study of global climate change. Generally, the GPP has been estimated by micrometeorological techniques. However, these techniques have a high cost of implantation and maintenance, making the use of orbital sensor data an option to be evaluated. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) MOD17A2 product and the vegetation photosynthesis model (VPM) to predict the GPP of the Amazon-Cerrado transitional forest. The GPP predicted by MOD17A2 (GPP MODIS) and VPM (GPP VPM) were validated with the GPP estimated by eddy covariance (GPP EC). The GPP MODIS, GPP VPM and GPP EC have similar seasonality, with higher values in the wet season and lower in the dry season. However, the VPM performed was better than the MOD17A2 to estimate the GPP, due to use local climatic data for predict the light use efficiency, while the MOD17A2 use a global circulation model and the lookup table of each vegetation type to estimate the light use efficiency.

The ecosystem net radiation has a complex variation, and represents the energy available for physical and biological processes that occurbetween the vegetated surface and atmosphere. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze the complexity of net radiation measuredabove the canopy of a seasonal flooded forest in the northern Pantanal from the perspective of complexity theory. The attractors wereseasonal reconstructed by the estimation of the exponents correlation dimension (D2(wet) = 1,73±0,05 and D2(dry) = 1,36±0,18), embeddeddimension (m = 7), rate of recurrence (RR(wet) = 0,144±0,004 and RR(dry) = 0,169±0,002) and determinism (DET(wet) = 0,896±0,013 andDET(dry) = 0,973±0,015) data sets analyzed. The results showed the existence of strange attractors of low fractal dimension, and sensitiveto the seasonality of radiation balance.
