FAST is essential to decide whether trauma patients need laparotomy, but it has a notable decrease in accuracy in patients with pelvic fracture. Our objective is to analyze the consequences of therapeutic decision-making based on the FAST results in trauma patients with pelvic fracture.Descriptive study that includes trauma patients older than 16 with a pelvic fracture admitted to the critical care area or who died. The FAST result was compared with a true positive or negative value according to the results of laparotomy or abdominal CT. We recorded diagnosis and treatment of each injury and resolution of the case, detailing the cause of death, among all variables.Over the 13-year period, we included 263 trauma patients with pelvic fracture, with a mean ISS of 31 and mortality of 19%. FAST had a sensitivity of 65.2%, specificity of 69%, false negative rate of 34.8% and false positive rate of 30.9%. Hemodynamically unstable patients died twice as many stable patients (27% vs 14%, P .05). Patients with positive FAST died more than negative FAST (43% vs 26%); and 4 out of 10 hemodynamically unstable patients who underwent non-therapeutic laparotomy after presenting a false positive FAST died from hypovolemic shock. The mortality rate fell from 60% to 20% when preperitoneal packing was performed before angio-embolization of the pelvis.FAST has low accuracy in polytraumatized patients with pelvic fracture. Patients with false positive FAST have higher mortality, which can be reduced notably by applying preperitoneal packing.

espanolIntroduccion La exactitud del FAST disminuye notablemente en los pacientes politraumaticos con fractura pelvica. El objetivo es analizar las consecuencias de tomar decisiones terapeuticas basadas en el resultado del FAST en los pacientes politraumaticos con fractura de pelvis. Metodos Estudio descriptivo de pacientes con politraumatismos mayores de 16 anos que han ingresado en el area de criticos o que han fallecido previamente, con fractura pelvica. Aging increases the risk of cancer partly through alterations in the tissue microenvironment. Time-restricted feeding (TRF) is being proposed as an effective strategy to delay biological aging. In the present studies, we assessed the effect of long-term exposure to TRF on the emergence of the age-associated, neoplastic-prone tissue landscape. Animals were exposed to either ad libitum feeding (ALF) or TRF for 18 months and then transplanted with hepatocytes isolated from pre-neoplastic nodules. Both groups were continued ALF and the growth of transplanted cells was evaluated 3 months later. A significant decrease in frequency of larger size clusters of pre-neoplastic hepatocytes was seen in TRF-exposed group compared to controls. Furthermore, TRF modified several parameters related to both liver and systemic aging towards the persistence of a younger phenotype, including a decrease in liver cell senescence, diminished fat accumulation and up-regulation of SIRT1 in the liver, down-regulation of plasma IGF-1, decreased levels of plasma lipoproteins and up-regulation of hippocampal brain-derived growth factor (BDNF).These results indicate that TRF was able to delay the onset of the neoplastic-prone tissue landscape typical of aging. To our knowledge, this is the first investigation to describe a direct beneficial effect of TRF on early phases of carcinogenesis.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-06-01 Forensic Facial Reconstruction (FFR) is a technique that enables the recognition of an individual, by modeling the contours of facial tissues on a skull found without identification. It it is necessary to know the facial soft tissue thickness (FSTTs) that covers some craniometric points in the underlying skull to perform a FFR, as they are used as a basis for obtaining the facial contour. The objective of this study was to measure FSTTs of living adult Brazilian subjects, using images from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), considering the variables sex, ancestry, age and body mass index. Twenty-one anatomical landmarks (10 midsagittal and 11 bilateral) were measured, using Osirix Lite software. A total of 106 images were analyzed (71 females and 35 males). It was observed that, in general: 1. males presented thicker facial soft tissues than females; 2. older individuals had higher FSTT values than younger ones; 3. black individuals presented higher means, compared with white individuals, and; 4. subjects with BMI above normal had thicker facial tissues than those with normal BMI. However, more studies with the Brazilian population are necessary. In order to obtain data related to subgroups concerning, for example, sex and ancestry, sex and age, or sex and BMI, larger samples must be considered. Two-dimensional imaging records, as conventional radiographies, are part of the orthodontic clinic routine; frontal sinus images are often present in these exams. The characteristics of the frontal sinus are information of great relevance for the Forensic Sciences, as their images may be used for human identification purposes. With the advent of new three-dimensional technologies and computerized image examinations such as Computed Tomography (CT), three-dimensional analysis of the frontal sinuses has become possible. This article evaluates the possibilities of human identification using frontal sinuses 2D and 3D images and the role of orthodontists in this context. Pubmed, SciELO, LILACS and Web of Science were used as databases. As inclusion criteria, were selected texts concerning the studied issue. Although the analysis of frontal sinuses is traditionally carried out using two-dimensional images, there is a growing trend of studies employing CT scans. Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is an important diagnosis tool, more frequently used in orthodontics, which allows a three-dimensional approach and great precision in measurements. Together with two-dimensional analysis of frontal sinuses, 3D images are of great value for human identification. Although three-dimensional analysis is not yet a routine, its Forensic use is undoubtedly an excellent tool provided by new technologies. It is important that the orthodontist knows this possibility by properly keeping the patients’ imaging exams. In confrontations, many behaviors are based on visual information. To establish the importance of visual signals in the aggression of cichlid fish, we observed the behavior of groups in three juveniles of Nile tilapia (six groups in each condition), for 30 minutes under two extremes of light condition: high luminosity and low luminosity (dark condition for humans - only infrared light). The average number of bites and chases in the low luminosity was lower than observed in high luminosity. We conclude that the low luminosity condition diminishes but does not eliminate fights, and the fish can rely on nonvisual senses and low intensity of light to interact with conspecifics. The artificial high luminosity in artificial environments is potentially compromising welfare for increasing the number of agonistic interactions. Moreover, it is possible that in experimental designs studying behavior the high luminosity is a variable interfering in the conclusions about agonistic behavior in cichlid fish.

Moderate caloric restriction (CR) is an effective strategy to delay the onset of chronic disease states. Conversely, social isolation (SI) carries an increased risk of morbidity and mortality from several causes. The present studies were designed to investigate the long-term effect of the two combined exposures. Two-month-old male rats of the Fischer 344 strain were fed either ad libitum or under a regimen of CR, and each of the two animal sets were housed either in group or isolation. Food consumption and animal growth curves were as expected during the first 6 wk of observation. However, starting at 2 mo and continuing until the fifth month of follow up, rats exposed to both CR and SI showed signs of altered feeding behavior and were unable to complete their (already restricted) meal. Furthermore, altered behavior was accompanied by a corresponding decrease in growth rate until no further increase in body weight was observed. Restoration of group-housing conditions led to a reversal of this phenotype. We conclude that chronic moderate CR and SI synergize to induce anorexia-like behavior, representing a simple and reproducible model to study such an eating disorder.

Resumen Introduccion Las constantes vitales detectan la presencia de hemorragia al perder grandes cantidades de sangre, lo que comporta una gran morbimortalidad. El Shock Index (SI) es un parametro que detecta el sangrado con puntos de corte de 0,9. El objetivo de este estudio es valorar si un punto de corte de ≥ 0,8 es mas sensible para detectar sangrado oculto, permitiendo iniciar maniobras terapeuticas mas precoces. Metodos Estudio analitico de validacion del SI que incluye pacientes politraumatizados graves mayores de 16 anos. Se registran constantes vitales y escalas predictivas de sangrado: SI, Assessment of Blood Consumption score y Pulse Rate Over Pressure score. Se analiza la relacion del SI con 5 marcadores predictivos de sangrado: necesidad de transfusion masiva, embolizacion angiografica, control del sangrado quirurgico, muerte por shock hipovolemico y «sangrado activo» (presencia de al menos uno de los 4 marcadores anteriores en un paciente). Resultados Recogida prospectiva de datos de 1.402 pacientes politraumatizados durante 10 anos. El Injury Severity Score medio fue de 20,9 (DE 15,8). Hubo una mortalidad del 10%. El SI medio fue de 0,73 (DE 0,29). En total presentaron «sangrado activo» el 18,7% de la serie. El SI medio en los pacientes con «sangrado activo» fue de 0,87, mientras que las constantes vitales estaban dentro de la normalidad. El area bajo la curva ROC del SI para el «sangrado activo» fue de 0,749. Conclusiones El SI con un punto de corte ≥ 0,8 es mas sensible que aquel con el punto de corte ≥ 0,9 y permite iniciar maniobras de reanimacion mas precoces en los pacientes con sangrado oculto.

Introduction Vital signs indicate the presence of bleeding only after large amounts of blood have been lost, with high morbidity and mortality. The Shock Index (SI) is a hemorrhage indicator with a cut-off point for the risk of bleeding at 0.9. The aim of this study is to assess whether a cut-off of ≥0.8 is more sensitive for detecting occult bleeding, providing for early initiation of therapeutic maneuvers. Methods SI analytical validation study of severe trauma patients older than 16 years of age. Vital signs were recorded, and scales for predicting bleeding included: SI, Assessment of Blood Consumption score, and Pulse Rate Over Pressure score. The relationship between the SI and 5 markers for bleeding was analyzed: need for massive transfusion, angiographic embolization, surgical bleeding control, death due to hypovolemic shock, and the overall predictor “active bleeding” (defined as the presence of at least one of the 4 markers above). Results Data from 1402 trauma patients were collected prospectively over a period of 10 years. The mean Injury Severity Score was 20.9 (SD 15.8). The mortality rate was 10%. The mean SI was 0.73 (SD 0.29). “Active bleeding” was present in 18.7% of patients. The SI area under the ROC curve for “active bleeding” was 0.749. Conclusions An SI cut-off point ≥0.8 is more sensitive than ≥0.9 and allows for earlier initiation of resuscitation maneuvers in patients with occult active bleeding.

The terms 'development' and 'evolution' are both used to describe the unfolding of the carcinogenic process. However, there is increasing awareness of an essential difference in the meanings of these two terms with reference to cancer. We discuss evidence suggesting that the concepts of development and evolution are both pertinent to the description of carcinogenesis; however, they appropriately apply to distinct phases of a multistep process. Such a distinction bears important implications for the study and management of cancer.

The aim of Regenerative Medicine is to replace or regenerate human cells, tissues or organs in order to restore normal function. Among all organs, the liver is endowed with remarkable regenerative capacity. Nonetheless, there are conditions in which this ability is impaired, and the use of isolated cells, including stem cells, is being considered as a possible therapeutic tool for the management of chronic hepatic disease. Placenta holds great promise for the field of regenerative medicine. It has long been used for the treatment of skin lesions and in ophthalmology, due to its ability to modulate inflammation and promote healing. More recently, cells isolated from the amniotic membrane are being considered as a possible resource for tissue regeneration, including in the context liver disease. Two cell types can be easily isolated from human amnion: epithelial cells (hAEC) and mesenchymal stromal cells (hAMSC). However only the first cell population has been demonstrated to be a possible source of proficient hepatic cells. This review will summarize current knowledge on the differentiation of hAEC into liver cells and their potential therapeutic application.

This study was achieved with the aim to find metabolic changes between Fischer rats with different dipeptidyl peptidase-type 4 (DPPIV) expression. The DPPIV is an enzyme expressed in several tissues and is critically involved in the regulation of meal-related insulin secretion in healthy individuals. The metabolic consequences of chronic DPPIV inhibition were analyzed in a surrogate animal model of genetic enzyme deficiency. Hyphenated gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and multivariate data analysis techniques were used to study the metabolic aqueous fraction profile of 18 plasma and liver samples in two syngeneic rat strains differing in DPPIV activity (DPPIV+ vs. DPPIV−). The hyperglycemic response following oral glucose administration was attenuated in DPPIV− rats, as expected. Statistical significant differences between the two strains were observed among the low molecular weight polar metabolites analyzed from plasma and liver. These included a decrease in malic acid and glutamine and an increase in pyroglutamic acid, serine, and alanine in plasma of DPPIV− rats. In addition, palmitic acid, l-proline, and ribitol were decreased in the liver of DPPIV− strain. Such alterations were compatible with a normal phenotype. These results suggest that long-term exposure to DPPIV inhibitors looks compatible with an overall balanced metabolism.

However, the precise mechanisms responsible for the beneficial effect of CR on carcinogenic process are yet to be identified. In the present studies the hypothesis was tested that the CR might delay carcinogenesis via modulatory effects exerted on the age-associated, neoplastic-prone tissue microenvironment. Using a well characterized, orthotopic cell transplantation (Tx) system in the rat, preneoplastic hepatocytes isolated from liver nodules were injected into either old syngeneic rats fed ad libitum (AL) or animals of the same age given a CR diet (70% of AL feeding). Analysis of donor-derived cell clusters performed at 10 weeks post-Tx revealed a significant shift towards smaller class sizes in the group receiving CR diet. Clusters comprising more than 50 cells, including large hepatic nodules, were thrice more frequent in AL vs. CR animals. Incidence of spontaneous endogenous nodules was also decreased by CR. Markers of cell senescence were equally expressed in the liver of AL and CR groups. However, higher levels of SIRT1 and FOXO1 proteins were detected in CR-exposed livers, while expression of HDAC1 and C/EBPβ were decreased. These results are interpreted to indicate that CR delays the emergence of age-associated neoplastic disease through effects exerted, at least in part, on the tissue microenvironment. Nutrient-sensing pathways might mediate such modulatory effect.

An important drawback of local surgery for lesions in the anal canal is the difficulty of achieving en bloc full-thickness resections. The aim of this study is to evaluate TEM/TEO in lesions of this type from the point of view of morbidity, mortality and the quality of the pathology specimen. This is an observational study with prospective data collection from June 2004 to July 2018. Two groups are defined: group A (rectal tumors with proximal margin between 0 and ≤4 cm from anal verge) and group B (distal margin > 4 cm from anal verge). A technical description is provided; resections and postoperative complications in both groups are compared. During the study period, 757 patients underwent TEM/TEO. Finally, 692 patients were included, 192 patients in group A and 500 patients in group B. An en bloc surgical specimen was obtained in 176/192 patients (91.7%), although the defect was completely sutured in 132 (68.8%). In the comparative analysis, group A did not present significantly greater fragmentation of the resected piece [16/192 (8.3%) vs. 36/500 (7.2%), p = 0.630], although group A was associated with greater involvement of the surgical margin [28/192 (14.6%), 32/500 (6.4%), p = 0.001] and clinically relevant morbidity [16/192 (8.3%), 20/500 (4%), p = 0.034]. There was no mortality. The use of TEM/TEO to remove lesions originating in the anal canal is feasible. But we have to take into account that there is an increase in complications, technical difficulties and affected margins resection.

The characteristics of the paranasal sinuses (maxillary, frontal, sphenoid and ethmoid sinuses) are information of great relevance to Forensic Sciences, as their images can be used for human identification purposes. Due to their particularities, the paranasal sinuses provide valuable information for human identification, reducing the risk of errors during investigation by experts. Such structures are visualized from several imaging exams. This study evaluates the possibilities of human identification through the analysis of the paranasal sinuses, as well as the effectiveness of their analysis in estimating sex, age and ancestry. A comprehensive search was performed in the PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, and Web of Science databases. As inclusion criteria, texts that addressed the subject were selected. Imaging analysis of the frontal, maxillary and sphenoid sinuses is a useful tool for human identification, as well as for estimating sex, age and ancestry; usually provides a high level of accuracy. Regarding the ethmoid sinus, research is indicated to verify its use in human identification, as no publications on this specific subject were found. Additional research must be carried out (especially three-dimensional analysis of the paranasal sinuses), to develop standardized protocols, improving the work of experts, helping justice and society. In criminal lawsuits, the magistrate often needs technical contribution of an expert on the subject related to the crime, for the application of the penal sanction. This study aimed to analyze lawsuits, expert reports and epidemiological data of violent death cases, in which there was involvement of the face, head and neck in the region that covered by the Legal Medical Institute (LMI) of Araraquara-SP. For this purpose, decisions of the Court of Justice of São Paulo State were researched, in the period from 2012 to September 2017. The judgments were read and those related to consummated homicide, body injury followed by death and robbery were selected. The expert reports corresponding to the selected cases were searched in the LMI of Araraquara. This search resulted in 49 reports, which were analyzed. We observed that the majority of homicide and robbery victims were male, white, under 40 years of age and of low education level. The epidemiological data found were consistent with the data presented by Brazilian government agencies. The expert reports analyzed were performed exclusively by medical examiners, using technical language and detailed description of the lesions and the instruments that caused them. The most frequent causes of death were traumatic brain injury (41.67%), multiple trauma (10.42%), hemorrhagic shock (10.42%) and anemia (10.42%). The most frequent instruments, which caused injuries, were the perforating-blunt (26.42%), the forceful (22.64%) and the perforating-cutting (20.75%). In general, the reports presented good quality, tending to be of great help for the clarification of criminal justice. En los casos penales, el magistrado a menudo necesita el apoyo técnico de un experto en el tema relacionado con el delito sub judice para la aplicación de la sanción penal. El objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar procesos, peritajes y datos epidemiológicos de casos de muertes violentas, en los que el rostro, la cabeza y el cuello fueron afectados en la región amparada por el Instituto Médico Legal (IML) de Araraquara. En este sentido, las decisiones fueron planteadas por primera vez por la Corte de Justicia de São Paulo (TJSP), de 2012 a septiembre de 2017. Las sentencias fueron leídas y seleccionadas fueron las relacionadas con homicidio, lesiones corporales seguidas de muerte consumada y robo. Los informes periciales correspondientes a los casos planteados fueron buscados en el IML de Araraquara, dando como resultado 49 informes, que fueron analizados. Se observó que la mayoría de víctimas de homicidio y robo fueron hombres, blancos, menores de 40 años y con bajo nivel educativo. Los datos epidemiológicos encontrados fueron consistentes con los datos presentados por agencias gubernamentales. Los informes periciales analizados fueron elaborados exclusivamente por médicos forenses, en lenguaje técnico y con descripción detallada de las lesiones y los instrumentos que las ocasionaron. Las causas de muerte más frecuentes fueron: traumatismo craneoencefálico (41,67%), politraumatismo (10,42%), shock hemorrágico (10,42%) y anemia (10,42%). Los instrumentos causantes de lesiones más frecuentes fueron perforaciones romas (26,42%), romas (22,64%) y cortantes (20,75%). En general, los informes evaluados fueron de buena calidad, tendiendo a ser de gran ayuda para el establecimiento de la justicia penal. Observou-se que a maioria das vítimas de homicídio e latrocínio era homem, branco, com menos de 40 anos de idade e de baixa escolaridade. Os dados epidemiológicos encontrados foram condizentes com os dados apresentados por órgãos governamentais. Os laudos periciais analisados foram realizados exclusivamente por médicos legistas, com uso de linguagem técnica e com descrição detalhada das lesões e dos instrumentos que as causaram. As causas de morte mais frequentes foram: traumatismo crânio encefálico (41.67%), politraumatismo (10,42%), choque hemorrágico (10,42%) e anemia (10,42%). Os instrumentos causadores de lesões mais frequentes foram os pérfuro-contundentes (26,42%), os contundentes (22,64%) e os pérfuro cortantes (20,75%). No geral, os laudos avaliados apresentaram boa qualidade, tendendo a ser um grande auxiliar para o deslinde da justiça criminal.

However, there are situations where bodies are not recognizable, and there are no suspected identities. In these cases, Forensic Facial Reconstruction (FFR) can be performed. The obtained face later can be conveyed in the media, leading to recognition and bringing chances of future identification. In order to perform a FFR, knowledge of facial soft tissue thicknesses (FSTT) is necessary. The objective of this study was to measure FSTTs of living subadult Brazilian individuals, employing Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) images of 126 Brazilian subadults (48 children: 7–11 y.o and 78 adolescents: 12–18 y.o).The FSTTs of 21 craniofacial landmarks were measured, using Osirix Lite software. For each landmark, mean and standard deviation were calculated. Sex, age, ancestry and body mass index (BMI) were considered. Significant difference (p < 0.05) between males and females was observed at supraglabella, glabella, nasion, rhinion, mid-philtrum, supradentale, infradentale, menton and frontal eminence. In these landmarks, males presented higher FSTTs than females. Adolescents presented significant higher FSTTs than children at mid-philtrum and infradentale. Individuals with above normal BMI presented significantly higher FSTTs, compared to normal BMI, at supraglabella, mental eminence, lateral orbit, zygomatic arch, gonion, supra M2, occlusal line and sub M2. The obtained data constitute an important contribution to the realization of FFRs of Brazilian children and adolescents. In Brazil there is a high rate of disappearance and homicides of minors; the FSTT databases could help to achieve more accurate FFRs, increasing the possibilities of recognition. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of cavity preparation with Er:YAG laser on dentin adjacent to restorations submitted to cariogenic challenge in situ, by subsuperficial microhardness analysis. Bovine incisors were sectioned, flattened, and polished, resulting in 40 dentin slabs. The slabs were randomly assigned to four groups (n = 10), according to the cavity preparation method: I-high-speed handpiece (control); II-Er:YAG laser (160 mJ; 3 Hz); III-Er:YAG laser (260 mJ; 3 Hz); IV-Er:YAG laser (300 mJ; 3Hz). Cavities were restored with composite resin, and the specimens were fixed in intra-oral appliances, which were worn by 10 volunteers for 14 days for simulating cariogenic challenge in situ. During the experimental period, 20% sucrose solution was dripped over each specimen 6 times a day. Samples were removed, sectioned, and examined for subsuperficial Knoop microhardness at 100, 200, and 300 μm from the restoration and at 30 μm from dentin surface. Split-plot analysis of variance showed no significant difference among the cavity preparation techniques (p = 0.1129), among distances (p = 0.9030), as well as no difference in the interaction between the main factors (p = 0.7338). It was concluded that the cavity preparation with Er:YAG laser did not influence on dentin microhardness submitted to cariogenic challenge in situ.

Background: The organoleptic evaluation is considered the gold standard between evaluation methods of halitosis, but its main drawback is the difficulty of reproducibility. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the reproducibility of an organoleptic evaluation method using three levels of scores (0 = no odor, 1 = moderate odor, and 2 = strong odor) to increase reliability between researchers and clinicians. Methods: The evaluation was blindly conducted by two examiners previously calibrated by the Smell Identification Test and compliance in clinical trials. Statistical calculations were done with STATA ® software version 9.0. Results: The degree of agreement between examiners was 82.5%, with estimated Kappa (κ=0.69), with substantial agreement. Conclusion: The scale used in this study by organoleptic method was effective and reproducible but must be repeated and compared to other methods for better consistency of results.

Caloric restriction (CR) is known to promote health and longevity, likely via modification of the gut microbiota (GM). However, functional and metabolic changes induced in the GM during CR are still unidentified. Here, we investigated the short- and long-term effects of CR on the rat GM using a metaproteogenomic approach. We show that a switch from ad libitum (AL) low fat diet to CR in young rats is able to induce rapid and deep changes in their GM metaproteomic profile, related to a reduction of the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio and an expansion of lactobacilli. Specifically, we observed a significant change in the expression of the microbial enzymes responsible for short-chain fatty acid biosynthesis, with CR boosting propionogenesis and limiting butyrogenesis and acetogenesis. Furthermore, these CR-induced effects were maintained up to adulthood and started to be reversed after a short-term diet change. We also found that CR alters the abundance of an array of host proteins released in stool, mainly related to epithelial barrier integrity and inflammation. Hence, our results provide thorough information about CR-induced modifications to GM and host functional activity, and might constitute the basis for novel GM-based approaches aimed at monitoring the effectiveness of dietary interventions.

Resumen Introduccion El politraumatismo sigue siendo una de las principales causas de muerte entre los 10 y los 40 anos, causando graves incapacidades en los pacientes que sobreviven. El objetivo de nuestro estudio es realizar un analisis de calidad de la atencion del paciente politraumatizado mediante un estudio epidemiologico. Metodo Registro prospectivo de todos los pacientes politraumaticos atendidos en nuestro hospital, mayores de 16 anos, que ingresan en el area de criticos o mueren antes del ingreso. Resultados Desde marzo del 2006 hasta agosto del 2014, registramos 1.200 politraumatizados. La mayoria fueron hombres (75%), con una mediana de edad de 45 anos. El ISS medio fue de 20,9 ± 15,8 y el mecanismo de accion mas frecuente fue cerrado (94% casos). La mortalidad global fue del 9,8% (117 casos), siendo la muerte neurologica la principal causa de fallecimiento (45,3%), seguida de la muerte por shock hipovolemico (29,1%). En 17 casos (14,5% fallecimiento) la mortalidad fue considerada como evitable o potencialmente evitable un total de 327 pacientes (27,3%) precisaron de tratamiento quirurgico urgente y 106 pacientes (8,8%) precisaron de un tratamiento mediante radiologia intervencionista de caracter urgente. El 18,5% de los pacientes (222) presentaron alguna lesion inadvertida, con un total de 318 lesiones inadvertidas. Conclusion La atencion ofrecida en nuestro centro es correcta. La necesidad de una recogida de datos prospectiva de la atencion global a los pacientes politraumatizados es necesaria e imprescindible para poder evaluar la calidad ofrecida y mejorar los resultados.

The neural circuitry for social behavior and aggression appears to be evolutionarily conserved across the vertebrate subphylum and involves a complex neural network that includes the hypothalamus as a key structure. In the present study, we evaluated the changes in monoamine levels in the hypothalamus and on serum cortisol and plasma glucose of resident matrinxã (Brycon amazonicus) submitted to a social challenge (introduction of an intruder in their territory). The fight promoted a significant increase in hypothalamic 5-HT, NA and DA levels and on the metabolites 5-HIAA and DOPAC, and decreased 5-HIAA/5-HT and DOPAC/DA ratios in resident fish. Furthermore, an increase in serum cortisol and plasma glucose was also observed after the fight. Resident fish presented a high aggressiveness even with increased 5-HT levels in the hypothalamus. The alteration in hypothalamic monoaminergic activity of matrinxã suggests that this diencephalic region is involved in aggression and stress modulation in fish; however, it does not exclude the participation of other brain areas not tested here.

The aim of the present clinical randomized split-mouth study was to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of an Er:YAG laser for caries removal in primary molars, microbiological dentin analysis, and clinical restorations after 1 year in 29 children.The children's teeth were randomized into two groups: (I) an Er:YAG laser group and (II) a bur preparation group. The efficiency of the treatments (the time necessary for the removal of carious tissue) was evaluated based on the time spent on caries removal in the deciduous molars. The effectiveness (caries removal capacity) of the caries removal was determined by means of a blind test in which the examiner performed a tactile and visual examination of the dentin. Microbiological analysis was performed by counting the Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus sp in the remaining dentin. Clinical analysis of restorations was performed using the USPHS method in combination with photographs of restored teeth, 7 days after the restorative procedure and again after 1 year. All cavities were restored with the Adper Single Bond 2/Filtek Z350 system. The obtained data were analyzed with a significance level of 5 %.The Er:YAG laser was less effective and had the same efficacy as bur preparation during caries removal at the pulpal wall of deciduous molars. In the surrounding walls, bur preparation was the more effective method. Regardless of the method employed, the affected dentin in the pulpal wall had similar amounts of S. mutans and Lactobacillus sp. The restorations were clinically accepted by the USPHS method over a 1-year period.It can be concluded that caries removal with an Er:YAG laser has no influence on the clinical behavior of restorations.Irradiation with an Er:YAG laser is appropriate for caries removal in primary teeth.

The dichotomic effect of a cortisol level rise in vertebrate behavior has been widely observed. Generally, a chronic increase of the hormone level inhibits aggression, while an acute rise increases aggression. However, in this study, we show that this increase in aggression through an acute rise of cortisol also depends on the context in which the agonistic interaction occurs in the tropical fish matrinxã, Brycon amazonicus. We combined two factors: the type of housing (resident or non-resident in the trial arena) and the level of cortisol at the beginning of the fight (normal level - control, or high level - hydrocortisone-treated fish). The cortisol treatment increased the aggressiveness in the resident fish, but this effect was not observed in the non-resident fish, which fought in an unknown arena. The novelty of the arena may have elicited an "alerted state" in the non-resident fish; in this situation the fight was not the priority, and the cortisol effect in aggression could be impaired by a conflict between motivational systems (fear and aggression). In our knowledge, in fish, the increase of aggression promoted by an acute rise in cortisol levels was always tested and observed in a resident context, and the inhibition of cortisol effect in the agonist behavior is demonstrated for the first time. As the cortisol effect in aggression is observed in several taxa, the inhibition of aggressiveness increased by the novelty of the arena should be investigated in other groups to clarify the dynamics of this effect of cortisol in animal behavior.

The evidence linking aging and cancer is overwhelming. Findings emerging from the field of regenerative medicine reinforce the notion that aging and cancer are profoundly interrelated in their pathogenetic pathways. We discuss evidence to indicate that age-associated alterations in the tissue microenvironment contribute to the emergence of a neoplastic-prone tissue landscape, which is able to support the selective growth of preneoplastic cell populations. Interestingly, tissue contexts that are able to select for the growth of preneoplastic cells, including the aged liver microenvironment, are also supportive for the clonal expansion of normal, homotypic, transplanted cells. This suggests that the growth of normal and preneoplastic cells is possibly driven by similar mechanisms, implying that strategies based on principles of regenerative medicine might be applicable to modulate neoplastic disease.

This study evaluates, in situ, the effect of an anti-asthmatic medicine on the enamel and dentin of primary teeth. Twenty-eight specimens of enamel and dentin were prepared, selected, sterilized, and stored. Microhardness, microscopic morphology, and initial surface roughness were evaluated. Fourteen volunteers wore palatal devices containing two dentin specimens and two enamel specimens. Volunteers underwent surface treatment three times a day for 5 days, with the dripping of 5 ml of salbutamol sulfate for 1 min, only on specimens from one side of the device. At the end of the experiment the microscopic morphology, roughness, surface loss, and microhardness were ascertained. For enamel surfaces exposed to the medicine, erosion was observed in the microscopy images, along with a significant increase in roughness (p = .0325) and tissue loss (p = .03251) and a significant decrease in microhardness (p = .0325). For the dentin surfaces, erosion was observed in the microscopy images, but there was no significant increase in roughness (p = .593) or tissue loss (p = .285) nor any decrease in microhardness (p = .1088). In conclusion, the salbutamol sulfate had an in situ erosive effect on primary teeth enamel and this effect was observed morphologically on primary dentin. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Asthma is considered a global health problem, and its prevalence has increased in many countries, especially among children, as well as dental erosion. This study has clinical relevance because provides data on the erosive effect of a commonly prescribed anti asthmatic drug on deciduous teeth.

This study evaluated the influence of dietary L-tryptophan (TRP) supplementation on the time course of aggressive behaviour and on neuroendocrine and hormonal indicators in juvenile matrinxa Brycon amazonicus. Supplementation with TRP promoted a change in the fight pattern at the beginning of an interaction with an intruder, resulting in decreased aggressive behaviours during the first 20 min. The decrease in aggression did not persist throughout the interaction but increased at 3 and 6 h after the beginning of the fight. Monoamine levels in the hypothalamus were not influenced by TRP before or after the fight; however, the hypothalamic serotonin (5-HT) concentration and the 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid (5HIAA):5-HT ratio were significantly correlated with the reduction in aggressive behaviour at the beginning of the fight. Cortisol was not altered by TRP before the fight. After the fight cortisol increased to higher levels in B. amazonicus fed with supplementary TRP. These results indicate that TRP supplementation alters the aggressive behaviour of B. amazonicus and that this effect is limited to the beginning of the fight, suggesting a transient effect of TRP on aggressive behaviour. This is the first study reporting the effects of TRP supplementation on the time course of aggressive interaction in fishes.

This study evaluates the bond strength of dentin prepared with Er:YAG laser or bur, after rewetting with chlorhexidine on long-term artificial saliva storage and thermocycling. One hundred and twenty human third molars were sectioned in order to expose the dentin sur- face (n 510). The specimens were randomly divided in 12 groups according to treatment and aging: Er:YAG laser rewetting with deionized water (LW) and 24 h storage in artificial saliva (WC); LW and 6 months of artificial saliva storage 112.000 thermocycling (6M), LW and 12 months of artificial saliva storage 124.000 thermocycling (12M), Er:YAG laser rewetting with 2% chlorhexidine (LC) and WC, LC and 6M, LC and 12M, bur on high-speed turbine rewetting with deionized water (TW) and WC, TW6M, TW12M, bur on high-speed turbine 12% chlorhexi- dine (TC) and WC, TC and 6M, TC and12M. The specimens were etched with 35% phosphoric acid, washed, and dried with air. Single Bond 2 adhesive was applied and the samples were restored with a composite. Each tooth was sectioned in order to obtain 4 sticks, which were sub- mitted to microtensile bond strength test (mTBS). The two-way ANOVA, showed no significant differences for the interaction between the factors and for the aging factor. Tukey 5% showed that the LC group had the lowest mTBS. The rewetting with chlorhexidine negatively influenced the bond strength of the preparation with the Er:YAG laser. A better understanding of the complex relationship between aging and cancer will provide important tools for the prevention and treatment of neoplasia. In these studies, the hypothesis was tested that aging may fuel carcinogenesis via alterations imposed in the tissue microenvironment. Preneoplastic hepatocytes isolated from liver nodules were orthotopically injected into either young or old syngeneic rats and their fate was followed over time using the dipeptidyl-peptidase type IV (DPPIV) system to track donor-derived-cells. At 3 months post-Tx, the mean size of donor-derived clusters was 11±3 cells in young vs. 42±8 in old recipients. At 8 months post-Tx, no visible lesion were detected in any of 21 young recipients, while 17/18 animals transplanted at old age displayed hepatic nodules, including 7 large tumors. All tumors expressed the DPPIV marker enzyme, indicating that they originated from transplanted cells. Expression of senescence-associated β-galactosidase was common in liver of 18-month old animals, while it was a rare finding in young controls. Finally, both mRNA and IL6 protein were found to be increased in the liver of aged rats compared to young controls. These results are interpreted to indicate that the microenvironment of the aged liver promotes the growth of pre-neoplastic hepatocytes.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of the acute treatment, by immersion, with FLX on aggressive behavior of resident Brycon amazonicus fish. Fish pretreated with FLX presented an increase in aggressiveness, evidenced by the increase on the number of bites and chases against the intruder and a decrease in latency for the first attack, when compared to control fish. Together with previous studies, these results show the complexity of the neural modulation of the aggressive behavior in fish by 5-HTergic system. This study evaluated the effect of the systemic use of sodium alendronate in rats in vivo. Forty-five Wistar rats aged 36 to 42 days and weighing 200 to 230 g were randomly assigned to a control group (n 5 20), which received distilled water, and an experimental group (n 5 25), which received 2 weekly doses of 1 mg/kg of chemically pure sodium alendronate. The ani- mals were killed after 60 days of treatment. The tibias were removed for analysis of bone mineral density by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Then, the maxillary incisors were extracted for analysis of the mineralized dental tissues using fluorescence spectroscopy (FS), scanning elec- tron microscopy (SEM), bright field microscopy (BFM), and cross-sectional microhardness (CSMH) testing. DXA and CSMH data were subjected to statistical analysis by Kruskal-Wallis test (5% sig- nificance level). The experimental group presented higher bone mineral density than the control group by DXA. FS analysis revealed presence of alendronate in the mineralized dental tissues of the specimens of the experimental group. Significant morphological differences were not found by SEM and BFM. Enamel and dentin (100 and 300 lm from the dentinoenamel junction) CSMH data did not show significant difference between the control and experimental groups. Based on the obtained results, we conclude that while alendronate increased the bone mineral density and was incorporated into the mineralized dental tissues it did not cause significant alterations in the mor- phology and microhardness of rat incisor enamel and dentin. This study evaluated the effect of dietary supplementation with L: -tryptophan (L-TRP), a serotonin precursor, on the aggressiveness of juvenile matrinxã Brycon amazonicus. Fish were kept in individual aquaria for 7 days receiving the diets: D1 (control: 0.47% of TRP), D2 (0.94% of TRP), D3 (1.88% of TRP), and D4 (3.76% of TRP). After this, they were grouped with an intruder fish to establish a resident-intruder relationship during periods of 20 min. Blood cortisol, glucose, chloride, sodium and calcium; hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cell count and volume; liver glycogen and lipids were measured. Territoriality had significant effect on the aggressiveness of matrinxã (the residents were more aggressive than intruders, P 0.001) and tryptophan significantly affected their behavior. Fish fed with the D2 diet presented a longer latency until the first attack (P = 0.0069) and bit the intruder fewer times (P = 0.0136) during the period of observation, compared to the control group. The frequency of bites and chases after the first attack was not affected by the dietary supplementation of TRP. Physiological variables were not significantly affected by the diet, except for a moderate increase in cortisol level in fish fed with D2 diet after the fight, indicating slight activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-interrenal axis. The results show that juvenile matrinxã have aggressive and territorial behavior and that a diet containing 9.4 g TRP kg(-1) alter their aggressiveness, without affecting the stress-related physiological parameters.

This study ascertained whether under dental erosion models that closely mimics the real-life situation enamel and root dentin from bovine origin would be reliable substitutes for human counterparts. Through a 2x2 crossover design, in a first trial, 14 volunteers wore a palatal device containing slabs of bovine and human enamel. Half of the participants ingested (4x daily, for 10 days) orange juice first, crossing over to mineral water, while the remainder received the reverse sequence. In a second trial, volunteers wore devices with slabs of bovine and human root dentin. Except for the duration of each intraoral phase, which lasted 2 rather 10 days, the experiment with root dentin run exactly as for enamel. Dental substrates were analyzed for surface microhardness. Two-way ANOVAs (α=0.05) indicated no difference between the microhardness values recorded for human and bovine enamel (p=0.1350), but bovine root dentin had lower microhardness compared to its human counterpart (p=0.0432). While bovine enamel can reliably substitute its human counterpart in in situ dental erosion models, bovine root dentin does not seem to be a viable alternative to the corresponding human tissue.

Dental erosion is a type of wear caused by non bacterial acids or chelation. There is evidence of a significant increase in the prevalence of dental wear in the deciduous and permanent teeth as a consequence of the frequent intake of acidic foods and drinks, or due to gastric acid which may reach the oral cavity following reflux or vomiting episodes. The presence of acids is a prerequisite for dental erosion, but the erosive wear is complex and depends on the interaction of biological, chemical and behavioral factors. Even though erosion may be defined or described as an isolated process, in clinical situations other wear phenomena are expected to occur concomitantly, such as abrasive wear (which occurs, e.g, due to tooth brushing or mastication). In order to control dental loss due to erosive wear it is crucial to take into account its multifactorial nature, which predisposes some individuals to the condition.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of industrialised foods and drinks on primary tooth enamel previously eroded with hydrochloric acid (HCl). The crowns of one hundred two specimens were subjected to an erosive challenge with HCl and randomly divided into six groups (n = 17): Chocolate Milk (Toddynho® - Pepsico) - negative control; Petit Suisse Yogurt (Danoninho® - Danone); Strawberry Yogurt (Vigor); Apple puree (Nestlé); Fermented Milk (Yakult® - Yakult); and Home Squeezed Style Orange Juice (del Valle) - positive control. The 28-day immersion cycles for the test products were performed twice daily and were interspersed with exposure of the test substrate to artificial saliva. Measurements of enamel surface microhardness (SMH) were performed initially, after immersion in HCl and at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days of experimentation. A two-way ANOVA, according to a split-plot design, followed by the sum of squares decomposition and Tukey’s test, revealed a significant effect for the interaction between Foods and Drinks and Length of Exposure (p < 0.00001). Orange juice resulted in greater mineral loss of enamel after 28 days. None of the test products was associated with recovery of tooth enamel microhardness.

Objective: This study sought to evaluate whether root dentine caries-like lesions could be remineralised by saliva substitutes. Methods: Root dentine slabs (3 × 3 × 2 mm) were cut from bovine incisors, ground flat, polished and pre-tested for Knoop microhardness (KHN) at five locations spaced 500 μm apart and 500 μm from the left edge of each sectioned piece. After 60 out of the 100 slabs had been selected based upon their KHN values, specimens were coated with wax except for their outer surface. Specimens were then cycled through a highly cariogenic challenge model to induce caries-like lesions, whose formation was confirmed by KHN measurements located 500 μm from the right edge of the specimen. According to a randomised complete block design, the experimental units (n = 15) were exposed to 1.5 ml of saliva substitutes, based on either mucin (MC) or carboxymethylcellulose (CM), to natural human saliva (HS) or to 100% relative humidity (RH) over 20 days. This study evaluated in vitro the cariostatic effect of 6 restorative materials with and without fluoride release (Fuji II LC, F-2000, Degufil Mineral, Sure Fil and Z-250) associated with a fluoridated and a non-fluoridated dentifrice (Sensodyne Original Formula and Sensodyne Sodium Bicarbonate), on human enamel. Class V-like cavities were prepared on 240 enamel slabs, assigned to 12 groups (6 materials and 2 dentifrices). After cavity restoration, the slabs were submitted to a thermocycling regimen of 1000 thermal cycles and demineralization/remineralization cycles. During pH cycles, slurries of fluoridated and non-fluoridated dentifrices were applied for 5 min. Formation of artificial caries-like lesions was scored independently and blindly by 5 calibrated examiners according to an ordinal scale ranked 0 to 3 by visual examination. The results were analyzed statistically by the Kruskal-Wallis test and pair-wise comparisons (alpha=0.05). There were no significant differences (p>0.05) among the restorative materials associated with the fluoridated dentifrice. When used in association with the non-fluoridated dentifrice, Ketac-Fil showed the highest cariostatic effect followed by Fuji II LC and the other materials. Ketac-Fil was the only material that did not differ statistically when combined with either the fluoridated or the non-fluoridated dentifrice. In conclusion, under the tested experimental conditions, the association of restorative materials and fluoridated dentifrice yielded higher cariostatic effect, except for the conventional glass ionomer cement, whose cariostatic effect was not influenced by the type of dentifrice. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar, in vitro, o efeito cariostático de 6 materiais restauradores contendo ou não flúor (Fuji II LC, F-2000, Degufil Mineral, Sure Fil and Z-250) associados à aplicação de dentifrícios (fluoretado e não-fluoretado; Sensodyne Fórmula Original and Sensodyne Sodium Bicarbonate) em esmalte dental humano. Cavidades classe V foram preparadas no esmalte de 240 fragmentos dentais, aleatoriamente divididos em 12 grupos (6 materiais e 2 dentifrícios). Após serem restauradas as cavidades, os fragmentos foram submetidos a ciclos térmicos e de desmineralização e remineralização, simulando um alto desafio cariogênico. Sobre os fragmentos restaurados, ainda, foram aplicados dentifrícios contendo ou não flúor, 5 min por dia. As diferenças no desenvolvimento de lesões experimentais de cárie adjacente às restaurações foram avaliadas por 5 examinadores calibrados, através de inspeção visual, atribuindo-se escores de 0 a 3. Os resultados foram avaliados pelo teste de Kruskal-Wallis seguido pelo teste de comparações múltiplas (alfa=0,05). Quando associados ao dentifrício fluoretado, os materiais restauradores não diferiram entre si em relação ao potencial cariostático (p>0,05). Quando os materiais foram utilizados em associação com o dentifrício não-fluoretado o Ketac-Fil apresentou o maior potencial cariostático, seguido pelo Fuji II LC e pelos demais materiais. O Ketac-Fil foi o único material que não diferiu significativamente quando associado com o dentifrício com ou sem flúor. Sob as condições experimentais do estudo, a associação dos materiais restauradores ao dentifrício fluoretado resultou em uma maior ação cariostática, exceto para o cimento de ionômero de vidro convencional, que não diferiu com a aplicação dos dentifrícios.

This study evaluated the surface roughness change and wear provided by different dentifrices on root dentine previously exposed to erosive challenges. According to a randomized complete block design, 150 slabs of bovine root dentine (6 x 3 x 2 mm) were ground flat and polished. In an area of 4 x 3 mm on the dentine surface, specimens were submitted to five erosive/abrasive events, each one composed by: exposure to Sprite Diet or distilled water for 5 min, then to a remineralizing solution for 1 min, and simulation of 5,000 brushing strokes. Four dentifrices--regular (RE), baking soda (BS), whitening (WT) and tartar control (TC)--and distilled water (CO), used as control, were compared. Final texture and the wear depth were evaluated using a profilometer. ANOVA did not show significant interaction, indicating that the effect of dentifrices on both surface roughness change and wear did not depend on whether or not the dentine was eroded ( p0.05). There was no difference between abrasion of eroded and sound dentine. The Tukey's test revealed that WT, BS and TC provided the highest increase in surface roughness differing from RE and CO. TC yielded the deepest wear of root dentine, whereas RE and CO, the shallowest. No significant difference in wear among BS, TC and WT were observed. Within the limitations of this study, the data showed that abrasion of both eroded and sound root dentine was dependent on the dentifrice used.

Dentine substrates with different mineral contents and morphological patterns were created by submitting root slabs to the following treatments: (A) immersion in artificial saliva during the experimental period (control), (B) demineralization for 32 h to induce caries lesion (demineralized group), and (C) demineralization for 32 h followed by remineralization for 8 d (remineralized group). The slabs were longitudinally sectioned, the mineral content was determined by cross-sectional microhardness, and the bond strength of an adhesive system/composite resin was assessed using a microtensile bond strength test. The dentine morphology after the treatments as well as the failure pattern of the debonded specimens was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Statistically significant differences were found in mineral content. Morphological analysis showed marked differences between the patterns of demineralized and remineralized substrates. The bond strength mean value of the control A did not differ from the group B, but was statistically higher than the group C. Since no linear relationship was found between dentine mineral content and bond strength values, it could be suggested that the morphological pattern may be more relevant than the mineral content to explain the bond strength of composite resin to dentine.

Objective . The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the interaction between two sources of fluoride (restorative systems and dentifrices) in inhibiting artificial root caries development. Methods . One hundred and eighty tooth segments were embedded in polyester resin, and sanded flat. Cylindrical cavities 1.0 mm-deep and 1.5 mm-diameter were prepared in root dentin and randomly restored by fluoride-containing restorative systems: Ketac-fil/Espe (Ke), Fuji II LC/GC Corp (Fj), F2000/3M (F2), Surefil/Dentsply (Su) or a control: Filtek Z250/3M (Z2). Ten experimental groups were made to test the association among the five restorative systems and two dentifrices: with F − (Sensodyne Baking Soda) or without F − (Sensodyne Original) ( n =18). After surface polishing, a 1 mm-wide margin around the restorations was demarcated and initial dentin surface Knoop microhardness values (KHN i ) were obtained. The specimens were submitted to a pH-cycling model, and to applications of slurries of dentifrice. Afterwards the final dentin surface Knoop microhardness values (KHN f ) were measured. Results . The differences between KHN i and KHN f , and the covariate KHN i were considered by the ANCOVA and Tukey's test ( α =0.05). The interaction between restorative system and dentifrice was statistically significant ( p =0.0026). All restorative systems provided some protection against artificial caries challenge when associated with the fluoride-containing dentifrice treatment. The means (standard deviation) of reductions in Knoop hardness values for systems associated with the fluoride-containing dentifrice were: Ke: 40.0(1.02) a , Fj: 41.9(1.02) b , F2: 43.3(1.04) c , Su: 43.5(1.00) c , Z2: 44.0(1.02) c ; and with the non-fluoride-containing dentifrice were: Ke: 42.9(1.02) a , Fj: 44.7(1.01) b , F2: 45.2(1.09) bc , Su: 46.0(0.99) c , Z2: 46.6(0.99) c (statistical differences were expressed by different letters). Conclusion . The cariostatic effect shown by the fluoride-containing dentifrice could enhance that shown by Ketac-fil and Fuji II LC, and could mask that shown by F2000.

The aim of the study was to determine the reproducibility and validity of DIAGNOdent in detecting active and arrested caries lesions on free smooth surfaces. Volunteers were selected from state schools of Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil. Overall, 220 lesions were clinically examined. Two specially trained (‘calibrated’) examiners performed both clinical and laser evaluations independently, and after a 1-week interval, the examinations were repeated. The intra-examiner agreement for the laser evaluation was substantial (ĸex1 = 0.79, ĸex2 = 0.71). There was almost perfect agreement between the two examiners for the clinical examination (ĸex1 = 0.95, ĸex2 = 0.85). The inter-examiner agreement showed substantial reproducibility (ĸ = 0.77) for the laser examination and almost perfect agreement (ĸ = 0.85) for the clinical evaluation. The validation criterion was the clinical examination of white spots, recorded as active or arrested. The sensitivity was 0.72 and the specificity was 0.73, which indicates that the DIAGNOdent was a good auxiliary method for detecting incipient caries lesions on free smooth surfaces. The utilization of both methods can improve the efficacy of caries diagnosis.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a dip slide test for mutans streptococci in caries risk assessment, when the microbiological results were compared to well-defined clinical criteria (DCC) for caries risk, clinically measured through high and low caries activity. Eighty-one volunteers from the 6th to 8th grades from public schools of Piracicaba, Sao Paulo, Brazil, were evaluated for dental caries. All free smooth surfaces were evaluated to check whether or not there were white spots. Based on the subjects' caries experience, a calibrated clinician divided them into groups of high and low caries activity. The subjects were submitted to a salivary test (CARITEST SM) from the same batch number. Kappa statistics (kappa) were applied to verify the reproducibility of the simplified test, checked through interexaminer agreement when the results were classified by independent and blind means. The microbiological results were validated according to expressions of sensitivity and specificity. A moderate agreement was verified as the results were classified according to 6 scores (kappa=0.55), and the agreement was substantial when the results were classified according to high and low microbiological count (kappa=0.78). The sensitivity and specificity values were 0.59 and 0.85, respectively, showing that the test was more specific than sensitive, and could thus better identify the low caries risk subjects.

This study evaluated, in vitro, the erosive potential of pediatric liquid medicines in primary tooth enamel, depending on the exposure time. Sixty deciduous incisors were randomly assigned to 4 groups (n=15), according to the immersion solutions: guaifenesin; ferrous sulfate; salbutamol sulfate and artificial saliva. The immersion cycles in the medicines were undertaken under a 1-min agitation, which wasperformed three times daily, during 28 days. Surface microhardness was measured at 7,14, 21 and 28 days. The titratable acidity and buffering capacity of the immersion media were determined. Data were analyzed by Analysis of Variance and Tukey's test (α=0.05). Salbutamol sulfate caused a gradual loss in enamel microhardness deciduous, observed at all times (p0.005) at any of the studied times. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images revealed that after 28 days the surfaces clearly exhibited structural loss, which was unlike those immersed in artificial saliva. Erosion of deciduous enamel was dependent on the type of medicine and exposure time. Este estudo avaliou, in vitro, o potencial erosivo de medicamentos líquidos pediátricos em esmalte de dentes decíduos, em função do tempo de exposição. Sessenta incisivos decíduos foram divididos aleatoriamente em 4 grupos (n=15), de acordo com a solução de imersão: guaifenesina, sulfato ferroso, sulfato de salbutamol e saliva artificial. Os ciclos de imersão nos medicamentos foram realizados sob agitação por 1 min, três vezes ao dia, durante 28 dias. As medidas de microdureza superficial foram realizadas após 7, 14, 21 e 28 dias. A acidez titulável e capacidade tampão dos meios de imersão foram determinadas. Os dados foram submetidos à Análise de Variância e teste de Tukey (α=0,05). O sulfato de salbutamol causou uma perda gradual na microdureza do esmalte decíduo, em todos os tempos verificados (p0,005) da microdureza em nenhum dos tempos estudados. As imagens de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) revelaram que após 28 dias, as superfícies expostas aos medicamentos apresentaram perda estrutural, diferindo dos que foram imersos em saliva artificial. A erosão do esmalte decíduo foi dependente do tipo de medicamento e do tempo de exposição.

Aim To address to what extent hypertrophy and hyperplasia contribute to liver mass restoration after major tissue loss. Methods The ability of the liver to regenerate is remarkable on both clinical and biological grounds. Basic mechanisms underlying this process have been intensively investigated. However, it is still debated to what extent hypertrophy and hyperplasia contribute to liver mass restoration after major tissue loss. We addressed this issue using a genetically tagged system. We were able to follow the fate of single transplanted hepatocytes during the regenerative response elicited by 2/3 partial surgical hepatectomy (PH) in rats. Clusters of transplanted cells were 3D reconstructed and their size distribution was evaluated over time after PH. Results Liver size and liver DNA content were largely recovered 10 d post-PH, as expected (e.g., total DNA/liver/100 g b.w. was 6.37 ± 0.21 before PH and returned to 6.10 ± 0.36 10 d after PH). Data indicated that about 2/3 of the original residual hepatocytes entered S-phase in response to PH. Analysis of cluster size distribution at 24, 48, 96 h and 10 d after PH revealed that about half of the remnant hepatocytes completed at least 2 cell cycles. Average size of hepatocytes increased at 24 h (248.50 μm2 ± 7.82 μm2, P = 0.0015), but returned to control values throughout the regenerative process (up to 10 d post-PH, 197.9 μm2 ± 6.44 μm2, P = 0.11). A sizeable fraction of the remnant hepatocyte population does not participate actively in tissue mass restoration. Conclusion Hyperplasia stands as the major mechanism contributing to liver mass restoration after PH, with hypertrophy playing a transient role in the process.

A B S T R A C T Background: In the international scientific literature, there are few studies that emphasize the presence or absence of hair in forensic facial reconstructions. There are neither Brazilian studies concerning digital facial reconstructions without hair, nor research comparing recognition tests between digital facial reconstructions with hair and without hair. The miscegenation of Brazilian people is considerable. Brazilian people, and, in particular, Brazilian women, even if considered as Caucasoid, may present the hair in very different ways: curly, wavy or straight, blonde, red, brown or black, long or short, etc. For this reason, it is difficult to find a correct type of hair for facial reconstruction (unless, in real cases, some hair is recovered with the skeletal remains). Aims and methods: This study focuses on the performance of three different digital forensic facial reconstructions, without hair, of a Brazilian female subject (based on one international database and two Brazilian databases for soft facial-tissue thickness) and evaluates the digital forensic facial reconstructions comparing them to photographs of the target individual and nine other subjects, employing the recognition method. A total of 22 assessors participated in the recognition process; all of them were familiar with the 10 individuals who composed the face pool. Results and conclusions: The target subject was correctly recognized by 41% of the 22 examiners in the International Pattern, by 32% in the Brazilian Magnetic Resonance Pattern and by 32% in the Brazilian Fresh Cadavers Pattern. The facial reconstructions without hair were correctly recognized using the three databases of facial soft-tissue thickness. The observed results were higher than the results obtained using facial reconstructions with hair, from the same skull, which can indicate that it is better to not use hair, at least when there is no information concerning its characteristics.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2011-12-01 This study evaluated stress indicators of juvenile piau (Leporinus friderici) during and after a 4-hour transportation in order to establish an appropriate transportation protocol for this type of fish. Fish were transported in plastic bags (133.1 g/L) and sampled before loading, during 1, 2, 3 and 4 h and after transportation (2, 6, 12 and 24 h). Blood samples were analyzed for cortisol and glucose levels, hematocrit, hemoglobin level, number and mean corpuscular volume of erythrocytes. Water pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature and ammonia were monitored before, during and after transportation. No mortality was observed through the experiment. Ammonia levels increased throughout transportation, but the low pH values kept NH3 in safe levels for fish. Cortisol levels increased within 4 h of transportation, and returned to control condition 2 h after arrival. Plasma glucose increased within one hour of transportation, reaching peak value within 4 h and returning to initial condition 2 h after arrival. Erythrocyte number and hemoglobin levels showed the lowest levels 2 h after arrival, and mean corpuscular volume increased during transportation, decreasing at 12 and 24 h after arrival. Transporting piau is stressful, but fish recover the initial condition in short time, showing tolerance to the changes in the water quality parameters. Facial reconstruction is a method that seeks to recreate a person's facial appearance from his/her skull. This technique can be the last resource used in a forensic investigation, when identification techniques such as DNA analysis, dental records, fingerprints and radiographic comparison cannot be used to identify a body or skeletal remains. To perform facial reconstruction, the data of facial soft tissue thickness are necessary. Scientific literature has described differences in the thickness of facial soft tissue between ethnic groups. There are different databases of soft tissue thickness published in the scientific literature. There are no literature records of facial reconstruction works carried out with data of soft tissues obtained from samples of Brazilian subjects. There are also no reports of digital forensic facial reconstruction performed in Brazil. There are two databases of soft tissue thickness published for the Brazilian population: one obtained from measurements performed in fresh cadavers (fresh cadavers' pattern), and another from measurements using magnetic resonance imaging (Magnetic Resonance pattern). This study aims to perform three different characterized digital forensic facial reconstructions (with hair, eyelashes and eyebrows) of a Brazilian subject (based on an international pattern and two Brazilian patterns for soft facial tissue thickness), and evaluate the digital forensic facial reconstructions comparing them to photos of the individual and other nine subjects. The DICOM data of the Computed Tomography (CT) donated by a volunteer were converted into stereolitography (STL) files and used for the creation of the digital facial reconstructions. Once the three reconstructions were performed, they were compared to photographs of the subject who had the face reconstructed and nine other subjects. Thirty examiners participated in this recognition process. The target subject was recognized by 26.67% of the examiners in the reconstruction performed with the Brazilian Magnetic Resonance Pattern, 23.33% in the reconstruction performed with the Brazilian Fresh Cadavers Pattern and 20.00% in the reconstruction performed with the International Pattern, in which the target-subject was the most recognized subject in the first two patterns. The rate of correct recognitions of the target subject indicate that the digital forensic facial reconstruction, conducted with parameters used in this study, may be a useful tool.

The acquired dental pellicle helps prevent erosion, but the protection level is unknown. This in situ study tested whether a two-hour pellicle protects against different erosive challenges by orange juice. Subjects wore palatal appliances loaded with either enamel or dentin specimens. Pellicle was allowed to form, or not (control), on the surfaces of the specimens intra-orally for 2 hrs before the erosive challenges of 0 (control), 10, 20, and 30 minutes’ duration. Specimens were randomly removed from the appliances after each challenge. Percentage of surface microhardness change (%SMC) was determined for the enamel specimens, and that of mineral loss and lesion depth for the dentin specimens. Enamel specimens with the pellicle showed a significantly lower %SMC, only after the 10-minute challenge. No protection was found for dentin. It was concluded that the acquired pellicle reduced dental erosion, but that this effect was limited to the less severe erosive challenge on enamel surfaces.
