Background The hip abductor muscles, primarily the gluteus medius, play an important role in stabilizing the pelvis during gait. Gluteus medius weakness is associated with biomechanical changes and musculoskeletal disorders. Individuals with obesity can have great difficulty maintaining abductor muscular function due to being overweight and possibly experiencing a decrease in muscle mass. However, it is still unclear whether the musculature of person with obesity can compensate for these changes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare gluteus medius strength between individuals with obesity and normal-weight individuals using a digital hand-held dynamometer. Methods Twenty-five participants with obesity (BMI > 35 kg/m2) were matched for sex, age, and height with normal-weight individuals. Gluteus medius strength was measured by a single examiner using a belt-stabilized hand-held digital dynamometer placed on the knee of the individuals positioned in lateral decubitus. Three measurements were recorded with rest intervals, and only the highest value measured for each limb was used for analysis. Maternal obesity increases the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in offspring. The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYBG) is effective for achieving weight loss and ameliorates NAFLD. To determine whether these benefits are maintained after pregnancy and/or lactation, and whether they modulate hepatic morphofunction in the next generation, we evaluated hepatic lipid metabolism in Western diet (WD)-obese female rats that underwent RYGB and in their F1 offspring at adulthood. Female Wistar rats consumed a WD from 21 to 130 days of age, before being submitted to RYGB (WD-RYGB-F0) or SHAM (WD-SHAM-F0) operations. After 5 weeks, these females were mated with control male breeders, and the male and female F1 offspring were identified as WD-RYGB-F1 and WD-SHAM-F1. WD-RYGB-F0 dams exhibited lower serum lipids levels, but severe hepatic steatosis and pathological features of advanced liver injury. The hepatic proteins involved in lipogenesis were reduced in WD-RYGB-F0, as were the genes related to β-oxidation and bile acids (BAs). Although the female and male WD-RYGB-F1 groups did not exhibit hepatic steatosis, the livers of female WD-RYGB-F1 demonstrated higher amounts of lipogenic genes and proteins, while male WD-RYGB-F1 presented a similar downregulation of lipogenic factors to that seen in WD-RYGB-F0 dams. In contrast, maternal and offspring groups of both sexes displayed reductions in the expressions of genes involved in BAs physiology and gluconeogenesis. As such, RYGB aggravates NAFLD after pregnancy and lactation and induces a gender-dependent differential expression of the hepatic lipogenesis pathway in offspring, indicating that female WD-RYGB-F1 may be an increased risk of developing NAFLD.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the relaxation technique with guided imagery by means of virtual reality on health-related quality of life in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Methods: A quasi-experiment conducted in a Bone Marrow Transplantation Service of a public hospital in southern Brazil. From October 2019 to October 2020, forty-two adult participants who underwent transplantation were included, 35 in the intervention group and seven in the control group. A guided imagery intervention, with audio guiding the relaxation associated with nature images in 360o, was performed during the hospitalization period. Data were collected on the first day of hospitalization, on the transplantation day, during the neutropenia stage, and at pre-hospital discharge. The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Bone Marrow Transplantation (FACT-BMT), Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT-Fatigue) and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Neutropenia (FACT-N) were used to assess health-related quality of life, fatigue and neutropenia. Data were analyzed using the Generalized Linear Mixed Model for the evolution of the health-related quality of life assessments over time, considering the groups and stages. Therapeutic immobilization is a common treatment for the locomotor system; however, it causes loss of muscle due to disuse, leading to protein degradation and generating atrophy of muscle cells, ultimately changing functionality. In this sense, it is important for remobilization to be initiated early and performed with appropriate therapeutic strategies that enable tissue and functional recovery. One method of remobilization is physical exercise, among which whole body vibration (WBV) has been highlighted and mainly applied in people with reduced mobility. However, there are gaps on the morphological effects WBV has on muscle tissue, so in this study we analyzed the histomorphometry of the tibialis anterior muscle (TA) of Wistar rats remobilized using WBV. For the experiment, 32 male Wistar rats were used and divided into four groups (n = 8/group). Groups consisted of: control (CG), immobilized (IG), immobilized and remobilized freely (FG), and immobilized and remobilized with WBV (WG). After the experimental period, the TA was collected and processed for analysis in light microscopy. When compared to the control group, significant morphological changes were observed, which characterize muscle atrophy and reduction of all histomorphometric parameters of the TA of the immobilized animals. Remobilized animals showed improvement in all parameters, and the WBV was not different from the free remobilization, except for the reduction of central nuclei, which can be related to acceleration of the process of tissue regeneration. Thus, we can conclude that the WBV can have an impact on the acceleration of the muscle regenerative process, and may be beneficial in people with reduced mobility.

Introduction: Periodontal disease (PD) is an inflammatory condition, which leads to tooth loss and promotes a systemic inflammatory state that can aggravate the nerve degeneration. As laser therapy may stimulate regeneration, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of the low-level laser (LLL) on peripheral nerve regeneration under the systemic inflammatory condition of PD. Methods: Thirry-two male rats were used, distributed in 4 groups: nerve injury (NIG); periodontal disease with nerve injury (PDNI); nerve injury and treatment (TNIG); periodontal disease with nerve injury and treatment (PDNIT). On the 7th day of the experiment, the animals had ligatures placed around the lower first molars. On the 22nd day, they underwent peripheral nerve damage, and on the 25th day, the LLL treatment was initiated, performed for two weeks. The sciatic functional index (SFI) was evaluated with subsequent euthanasia of all the animals on the 37th day of the experiment. The sciatic nerve was collected for morphological and oxidative stress analysis and the hemi jaws for radiographic analysis. Results: Regarding the SFI, there was no difference among the groups in the first evaluation (EV) pre-injury; as for theEV2, after injury, all the groups presented a decrease in these values, which remained in post-treatment. For the morphology of the PDNI, nerve tissue presented larger diameter fibers, whereas, for NIT and PDNIT, fibers had smaller diameters with endoneurial organization. When it comes to the antioxidant system, there was an increase in protein concentration, higher superoxide activity, and decreased glutathione transferase activity in the treated groups. Catalase and cholinesterase did not differ between the groups, and lipoperoxidation (LPO) increased in the PD groups. For the mandible radiographic analysis, it was possible to verify the induction of PD. Conclusion: As for the used parameters, the low-level laser was not effective in increasing the nociceptive threshold, but it contributed to the regeneration of nerve fibers, although the inflammation was still present in the site. However, the treatment was effective in protecting cells against oxidative damage due to increased SOD and increased protein, although the decrease in GST demonstrates the inhibition of this stage of the antioxidant system.

Calidad de vida de pacientes con cancer avanzado en tratamiento paliativo y cuidado paliativo Qualidade de vida de pacientes com câncer avancado na terapeutica paliativa e no cuidado paliativo Objective: To assess the quality of life of patients with advanced cancer in palliative therapy and in palliative care. Materials and Methods: Quantitative, observational, cross-sectional, and analytic study conducted in a teaching hospital in Parana, Brazil, from January to June 2018, with 126 patients: 107 in palliative therapy; 19 in exclusive palliative care. The questionnaires for data collection were: Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 15-Palliative, Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Palliative Care 14, and Edmonton Symptom Assessment System. The Spearman non-parametric coefficient test was used for the analysis. Results: The overall quality of life in palliative therapy and in palliative care was, respectively, 71.54/59.65; when correlating the total score of quality of life of the Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 15-Palliative with the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Palliative Care 14 (p = 0.001), and the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (p = 0.001), significant difference of better quality of life was observed in the palliative therapy. Conclusion: Patients in palliative therapy have good overall quality of life, while the palliative care group reports regular quality of life. The symptoms were milder in the palliative therapy and more intense and with greater significance in palliative care; hence, knowing the compromise of quality of life will help professionals in planning interventions with transdisciplinary approach for patients and for their families. This work characterizes the adsorption of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), ochratoxin A (OTA), and zearalenone (ZEN) by dry micronized olive pomace (OliPom) and grape stems (GrapStem). Their performance was compared with that of three other materials, activated carbon (ActCarb), bentonite (Bent), and a commercial product (ComProd). Experiments were conducted in vitro at several pH values using buffer solutions. For OTA and ZEA, the strongest adsorbent was ActCarb, with 5 mg/mL being sufficient to bind >99% of all the mycotoxins. For AFB1, ComProd and Bent were the most effective adsorbents, as 0.5 mg/mL bound >95% of this mycotoxin. Among the two agro by-products, GrapStem was the strongest binder, with 10 mg/mL being sufficient to bind at least 90% of all the mycotoxins (except OTA at pH 7). OliPom was the least efficient material, but at a concentration of 30 mg/mL, its performance was similar to GrapStem. Adsorption isotherms were calculated, and ActCarb showed the maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax), with values that ranged from 19 to 24 g/mg for pH 2 and from 17 to 20 g/mg for pH 7. Background Envenomation by the South American Lonomia saturniid caterpillars, named lonomism, constitutes an emerging and somewhat neglected public health issue in Argentina and neighboring countries. Considering that there is an intricate relationship between environment and human health in such cases, this study aimed to analyze the eco-epidemiological profile of 40 accidents and 33 occurrences of Lonomia spp. in Misiones (Argentina) between January 2014 and May 2020. Methodology/Principal findings We described the eco-epidemiological variables and characterized the abiotic scenario of such cases. Additionally, we obtained a density map that shows the punctual intensity of Lonomia records throughout Misiones. Most of the accidents occurred in the Department of Guaraní and involved male victims younger than 20 years old. The accidental/occasional occurrence of Lonomia spp. (considering both adult and caterpillar stages together) was significantly higher in the rural area, whereas only adult specimens were found in urban areas. We determined that the presence of this insect in Misiones is positively related to higher temperatures and solar radiation, and larger precipitation and evapotranspiration throughout the year. Conclusion/Significance This study represents an initial step towards the global understanding of lonomism as a public health problem in Argentina. It provides a map of the risk level for this envenomation in Misiones, which could help authorities address public health policy efforts to implement sustainable strategies for prevention and response to this threat in Northeastern Argentina and neighboring regions., Author summary Caterpillars of the genus Lonomia (Saturniidae: Hemileucinae) are considered the world’s most deadly lepidopterans. Due to the increasing number of cases and the lack of antivenom therapy, envenomation by these animals constitutes an emerging and somewhat neglected public health issue in Argentina and neighboring countries. Our research has determined the eco-epidemiological scenario of such an envenomation in the Argentine province of Misiones–mainly covered by the Atlantic Forest (a suitable biome for L. obliqua)–, and identified some predictors to occurrences/accidents with this insect. This study also provides the first map of the potential risk of lonomism in this province, which has several natural attractions visited by millions of tourists worldwide. We discussed our findings in light of immediate response from health authorities to outline preventive strategies for accidents and conservation of this venomous lepidopteran in its ecological niche.

Objective: To assess and correlate overall quality of life and the cognitive function of adult patients with hematologic cancer subjected to autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantations up to three years after treatment. Materials and method: A longitudinal, observational, and analytical study was conducted with 55 patients in a reference hospital in Latin America, from September 2013 to February 2019, with the Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 30, analyzed with the Spearman’s correlation coefficient and Generalized Linear Mixed Model tests. Results: Overall quality of life in autologous and allogeneic transplantations presented a decline in the pancytopenia phase (59.3 and 55.3, respectively). There was impairment of the cognitive function in the autologous group in post-transplantation after two years (61.90) and, in the allogeneic group (74), in pancytopenia. In the autologous group, a positive (0.76) and significant (p < 0.04) correlation is observed between the cognitive domain and quality of life in post-transplantation after two years. In the allogeneic group, there was a positive (0.55) and significant (p < 0.00) correlation from 180 days after transplantation. Conclusions: Quality of life and the cognitive function present impairment and there is a correlation after the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for both groups: autologous and allogeneic. RESUMEN Objetivo: evaluar y correlacionar la calidad de vida general y la función cognitiva de pacientes adultos con cáncer hematológico sometidos al trasplante de células madre hematopoyéticas autólogo y alogénico hasta tres años luego del tratamiento. Materiales y método: estudio longitudinal, observacional y analítico con 55 pacientes, en un hospital de referencia en Latinoamérica, de septiembre del 2013 a febrero del 2019, con el instrumento Quality of Life Questionnarie-Core 30, analizado con las pruebas coeficiente de correlación de Spearman y el Generalized Linear Mixed Model. Resultados: la calidad de vida general en el trasplante autólogo y alogénico presentaron descenso en la fase de pancitopenia (59,3 y 55,3, respectivamente). Hubo disfunción cognitiva en el grupo autólogo posteriormente al trasplante dos años (61,90) y el grupo alogénico (74), en la pancitopenia. En el grupo autólogo, se observa correlación positiva (0,76) y significativa (p < 0,04) entre el dominio cognitivo y la calidad de vida en el post-trasplante dos años. En el alogénico, hubo correlación positiva (0,55) y significativa (p < 0,00) desde el post-trasplante 180 días. Resultados: a qualidade de vida geral no transplante autólogo e alogênico apresentaram declínio na fase de pancitopenia (59,3 e 55,3, respectivamente). Houve comprometimento da função cognitiva no grupo autólogo no pós-transplante dois anos (61,90) e no grupo alogênico (74), na pancitopenia. Observa-se, no grupo autólogo, correlação positiva (0,76) e significativa (p < 0,04) entre o domínio cognitivo e a qualidade de vida no pós-transplante dois anos. Objective Prematurity and low birth weight predispose preterm infants to cardiovascular disease in later life. Is the metabolic profile of these children impacted by the relation between birth weight and gestational age (GA)? This study aimed to evaluate whether the relationship between birth weight and GA of preterm infants has a positive correlation with the metabolic profile from birth to the sixth month of corrected age. Subjects and methods This is a longitudinal, prospective study with a cohort of 70 preterm and 54 term infants, who were enrolled in the study and shared into two groups: Appropriate for GA (AGA) and Small for GA (SGA), both classified at birth by Fenton and Kim curves. Longitudinal evaluation of anthropometry measures and blood samples of total cholesterol, glucose, triglycerides, and insulin were collected at birth, NICU discharge, and the sixth month of corrected age. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis (ANOVA, Fisher test, Shapiro-Wilk, and Cochran test). The effect size was 0.15, power was 0.92, and confidence interval 95%. Results No significant statistical differences were observed in relation to biochemical tests between AGA and SGA groups. However, a significant increase in triglyceride results above the reference values for age in the SGA group was observed throughout the follow-up. Conclusions Changes observed in the preterm infant metabolic profile show no correlation with adequacy of birth weight. Preterm lipid profile requires continuous evaluation at follow-up, due to the increased cardiovascular risk in later life.

Objective: To characterize the production related to the insertion of Intrauterine Devices by doctors and nurses in a low-risk maternity hospital. Method: Cross-sectional exploratory research, with retrospective collection of secondary data from medical records of women who received the device in a low-risk maternity hospital in Curitiba, Paraná, over 12 months. Data collected between October/2017 to March/2018 that underwent descriptive analysis and Chi-square test. Results: Of the 828 insertions, there was a significant difference between women who received the IUD at the Obstetric Center (247) and Ambulatory (571) in terms of the expulsion rate (p = 0.00001), with a greater chance of expulsion in the immediate postpartum period (Odds ratio 8.73), there was no significant difference between nurses (481) and doctors (347) (p = 0.07), however, more chance of expulsion when the doctor was (Odds ratio 3.60). The main complications were dysmenorrhea and vaginosis. Conclusion: The insertion of the IUD in the ambulatory by the nurse proved to be as safe as by the doctor. RESUMEN Objetivo: Caracterizar la producción referente a la inserción de dispositivos intrauterinos por parte de médicos y enfermeras en un hospital de maternidad de riesgo habitual. Método: investigación exploratoria transversal, con recopilación retrospectiva de datos secundarios de registros médicos de mujeres que recibieron el dispositivo en un hospital de maternidad de riesgo habitual en Curitiba, Paraná, durante 12 meses. Datos recopilados entre octubre/2017 a marzo/2018 que se sometieron a un análisis descriptivo y prueba de Chi-cuadrado. Resultados: De las 828 inserciones, hubo una diferencia significativa entre las mujeres que recibieron el DIU en el Centro de Obstetricia (247) y Ambulatorio (571) en términos de la tasa de expulsión (p = 0.00001), con una mayor probabilidad de expulsión en el período posparto inmediato (Odds ratio 8.73), no hubo diferencias significativas entre enfermeras (481) y médicos (347) (p = 0.07), sin embargo, hubo más posibilidades de expulsión cuando era médico (Odds ratio 3.60). Las principales complicaciones fueron dismenorrea y vaginosis. Conclusión: la inserción del DIU en el ambulatorio por parte de la enfermera resultó ser tan segura como la realizada por el médico. Método: Pesquisa exploratória transversal, com coleta retrospectiva de dados secundários de prontuários de mulheres que receberam o dispositivo em maternidade de risco habitual em Curitiba, Paraná, ao longo de 12 meses. Dados coletados entre outubro/2017 a março/2018 que passaram por análise descritiva e Teste Qui quadrado. Resultados: Das 828 inserções, existiu diferença significativa entre mulheres que receberam o DIU no Centro Obstétrico (247) e Ambulatório (571) quanto a taxa de expulsão (p= 0,00001), existindo mais chance de expulsão no pós-parto imediato (Odds ratio 8,73), não existiu diferença significativa entre enfermeiros (481) e médicos (347) (p=0,07), contudo, mais chance de expulsão quando foi o médico (Odds ratio 3,60). As principais intercorrências foram dismenorréia e vaginose. Conclusão: A inserção do DIU no ambulatório pelo enfermeiro se demonstrou tão segura quanto pelo médico.

Objective: To assess the domains of quality of life related to hematologic cancer patient health in the first three years from autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Method: A prospective cohort from September 2013 to February 2019 at a reference service in Latin America with 55 patients. The instruments Quality of Life Questionnaire Core C30 and Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy – Bone Marrow Transplantation were used. For data analysis, Generalized Linear Mixed Model was used. Results: The domains global and overall quality of life presented the lowest scores in the pancytopenia phase: 59.3 and 91.4 in autologous, 55.3 and 90.3 in allogeneic. The mixed method analysis has shown that there was a significant change in scores between the phases throughout the treatment (p< 0.05). Conclusion: Health-related quality of life presented significant changes in the domains between the phases throughout time. Understanding these results enables nursing interventions directed at the domains which were damaged during treatment. Resultados: Los dominios de calidad de vida global y general presentaran las menores puntuaciones en la etapa de pancitopenia: 59,3 y 91,4 en el autólogo, 55,3 y 90,3 en el alogénico. El análisis de métodos mixtos demostró que hubo un cambio significativo en la puntuación entre las etapas durante el tratamiento (p< 0,05). Conclusión: La calidad de vida relacionada con la salud presentó cambios significativos en los dominios entre las etapas a lo largo del tiempo. Conocer estos resultados posibilita intervenciones de enfermería direccionadas a los dominios afectados durante el tratamiento. Resultados: Os domínios de qualidade de vida global e geral apresentaram os menores escores na etapa de pancitopenia: 59,3 e 91,4 no autólogo, 55,3 e 90,3 no alogênico. A análise de métodos mistos demonstrou que houve alteração significativa dos escores entre as etapas ao longo do tratamento (p< 0,05). Conclusão: A qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde apresentou mudança significativa nos domínios entre as etapas ao longo do tempo. Conhecer esses resultados possibilita intervenções de enfermagem direcionadas aos domínios prejudicados durante o tratamento.

Objectives: to assess/correlate health-related quality of life with the social dimension of hematopoietic, autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplant patients in the three years post-transplant. Methods: longitudinal, observational study with 55 patients, in a reference hospital in Latin America, from September 2013 to February 2019, using the Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core and Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy Bone Marrow Transplantation. Results: A total of 71% underwent allogeneic transplantation. The social dimension had low averages since the baseline stage (55, 21) and low scores (56) for quality of life in pancytopenia. There was a significant positive correlation between social dimension, quality of life in pancytopenia (p0.36/0.86). Conclusions: patients with better assessments in the social dimension have a better quality of life. Interventions focusing on the multidimensionality of the quality of life construct are necessary. RESUMEN Objetivo: evaluar/correlacionar la calidad de vida relacionada a la salud con el ámbito social de pacientes trasplantados de células madre hematopoyéticas, autólogas y alogénicas, tres años post trasplante. Métodos: se trata de un estudio longitudinal, observacional, llevado a cabo en un hospital referencial de América Latina con 55 pacientes entre septiembre de 2013 y febrero de 2019, utilizando la Escala de Calidad de Vida-Núcleo y la Evaluación funcional de la terapia del cáncer: trasplante de médula ósea. Resultados: el 71% realizó un trasplante alogénico; el ámbito social presentó promedios bajos desde la etapa inicial (55, 21) y puntuaciones bajas (56) en cuanto a la calidad de vida en la pancitopenia. Se observó una correlación positiva significativa entre el ámbito social, la calidad de vida en la pancitopenia (p0,36/0,86). Conclusiones: aquellos pacientes con mejor evaluación en el ámbito social presentan mejor calidad de vida. Es necesario realizar intervenciones que se centren en la multidimensionalidad de la construcción de la calidad de vida. Alterations in the circadian cycle are known to cause physiological disorders in the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal and the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axes in adult individuals. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate whether exposure of pregnant rats to constant light can alter the reproductive system development of male offspring. The dams were divided into two groups: a light–dark group (LD), in which pregnant rats were exposed to an LD photoperiod (12 h/12 h) and a light–light (LL) group, in which pregnant rats were exposed to a photoperiod of constant light during the gestation period. After birth, offspring from both groups remained in the normal LD photoperiod (12 h/12 h) until adulthood. One male of each litter was selected and, at adulthood (postnatal day (PND) 90), the trunk blood was collected to measure plasma testosterone levels, testes and epididymis for sperm count, oxidative stress and histopathological analyses, and the spermatozoa from the vas deferens to perform the morphological and motility analyses. Results showed that a photoperiod of constant light caused a decrease in testosterone levels, epididymal weight and sperm count in the epididymis, seminiferous tubule diameter, Sertoli cell number, and normal spermatozoa number. Histopathological damage was also observed in the testes, and stereological alterations, in the LL group. In conclusion, exposure to constant light during the gestational period impairs the reproductive system of male offspring in adulthood.

Financial toxicity is a side effect of cancer treatment showing the financial burden experienced by cancer patients for funding their treatment. An instrument for its evaluation can contribute towards the creation of coping strategies. In Brazil, a developing country, cancer patients certainly feel the effects of this serious adverse event, however, the discussion on the theme and research concerning these issues is scarce and an instrument for evaluation can help in the promotion of coping strategies. Thus, the study objective was to: 1) translate and adapt the COmprehensive Score for financial Toxicity (COST) questionnaire to Brazilian culture and 2) evaluate the COST psychometric properties in Brazil. Thus, a methodological study was developed in two stages. In the first stage, the translation and cross-cultural adaptation were performed, and in the second stage, two groups of participants were recruited to evaluate the psychometric properties. In the first stage, 21 individuals participated, including translators and cancer patients, and in the second stage, 126 patients participated who were undergoing cancer treatment. For validation, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and Cronbach's alpha coefficient were performed to verify internal consistency. For the first stage's outcome, the pre-test Cronbach's alpha was 0.83. The EFA and CFA carried out in the second stage of the study revealed that the COST Brazilian version measures a single construct with a value of-χ2/gl = 179.78, comparative fit index = 0.00, Parsimony goodness of fit index = 0.302, root mean square error of approximation = 1.196 and p-value of close fit = 0.000. When comparing the average of the COST score and the standard deviation of the two samples, the significance value was p = 0.001. Therefore, it is possible to confirm that the COST is a valid and reliable questionnaire to measure the financial toxicity of cancer patients in Brazil.

Objective: to evaluate the criterion validity and reliability of the Portuguese-Brazilian version of the Wound Quality of Life. Methods: methodological research with 100 participants. For criterion and reliability validation, the items in the Wound Quality of Life questionnaires were correlated with the Freiburg Life Quality Assessment Wound - Wound Version, using the Spearman correlation test and Cronbach’s alpha. Results: the validity of concurrent criteria had a strong magnitude (0.85) when correlated with the Freiburg Life Quality Assessment Wound; the internal consistency had a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.84. Conclusion: the validated questionnaire has good psychometric properties, is brief, easy to apply and reliable for assessing the quality of life of patients with wounds that are difficult to heal. Objetivo: avaliar a validade de critério e confiabilidade do Wound Quality of Life versão português-Brasil. Métodos: pesquisa metodológica com 100 participantes. Para a validação de critério e confiabilidade, foram correlacionados os itens dos questionários Wound Quality of Life com o Freiburg LifeQualityAssessment Wound – Versão Ferida, utilizando o teste de correlação de Spearman e o alfa de Cronbach. Resultados: a validade de critério concorrente teve forte magnitude (0,85) quando correlacionada com o Freiburg LifeQualityAssessment Wound; a consistência interna teve um alfa de Cronbach de 0,84. Conclusão: o questionário validado apresentou boas propriedades psicométricas, é breve, de fácil aplicação e confiável para avaliação da qualidade de vida de pacientes com feridas de difícil cicatrização.

Background Among the Lepidoptera with medical importance in Brazil, larvae of Lonomia moth (Saturniidae: Hemileucinae) stand out by being the etiological agent of the lonomism, a form of erucism in which the most troubling symptoms include systemic hemorrhage that can lead to death. Methods This study provides an epidemiological overview of accident notifications with Lonomia registered by the Brazilian Reportable Disease Information System (SINAN) between 2007 and 2018. The categories of sociodemographic aspects of the victim, accident characteristics, and clinical data (6,636 records) were analysed by the chi-square test for goodness of fit (α=0.05). By the same test, accident frequencies by month, year, and state were also compared. To explore the spatial distribution of notifications and to identify significant space-time and purely spatial clusters, a spatial scan statistic (SaTScan) was used. Results The epidemiological profile of most of the victims had at least one of the following characteristics: male, >50 y of age, ethnically classified as white, and with a low level of education. Accidents in urban areas were as frequent as in rural areas. A higher frequency of non-work-related accidents was detected. Victims were mostly stung on the upper limbs. Most victims received medical care within the first 3 h after the accident. Most cases were classified as mild, although 12 deaths were reported. The south states of Brazil concentrate the highest frequencies of notifications. Summer was the season with the greatest number of cases, and the majority of the notifications occurred between 2017 and 2018. Conclusion These results provide an overall and current situation assessment of the lonomism in Brazil, and they should enable health authorities to improve the management of this envenomation in states/regions that share the high epidemiological risk of exposure to Lonomia.

Background: The hip abductor muscles play an important role in stabilizing the pelvis during gait, with its main function being performed by the gluteus medius. Gluteus medius insufficiency is associated with biomechanical alterations and musculoskeletal disorders. Due to being overweight and a possible muscle mass decrease, maintaining the abductor muscular function can be a great challenge for the obese. However, it is still unclear whether the musculature of obese individuals manages to compensate for these alterations. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the gluteus medius strength between obese and normal weight individuals using a digital hand-held dynamometer.Methods: Twenty-five obese (BMI > 35 kg / m2) participated in the study, being matched in gender, age, and height with normal weight individuals. The gluteus medius strength was measured by a single examiner using a belt-stabilized hand-held digital dynamometer on the knee of individuals positioned in lateral decubitus. Three measurements were recorded with rest intervals, considering only the highest value measured for each limb for analysis. The difference between pairs was calculated and the data distribution pattern was assessed using the Shapiro-Wilk test (p < 0.05), and the matrices of the variables were standardized and analyzed using the principal component analysis (PCA).Results: For the strength variables (Newtons) on both sides, no statistical differences were detected between the groups (p > 0.05). However, statistical differences were detected in these variables between the groups (p < 0.05) when normalizing the measurements in relation to individuals' weights (Newtons / kilograms). The PCA indicates that both strength in absolute values and normalized by weight are reduced in obese individuals.Conclusions: These findings indicate that obese individuals have the same or lower strength (PCA) to move more mass, which may suggest a relative weakness that induces functional limitation.Trial registration: The study was approved by the UNIOESTE Human Research Ethics Committee (#1.180.202) in July 2015.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a pop dance exergaming protocol on fall risk factors-depressive symptoms, fear of falling, and musculoskeletal function-in community-dwelling older female fallers and nonfallers. There were 47 community-dwelling older women assigned to the intervention group (IG) [fallers (n = 10, 69.8 ± 4.3 years); nonfallers (n = 12, 68.9 ± 3.3 years)] and the control group (CG) [fallers (n = 12, 73.6 ± 5.4 years); nonfallers (n = 13, 68.7 ± 4.8 years)]. Introduction: Diplegic children have difficulties in gait and therefore ramps are used as strategies of accessibility. Objective: The present study investigated the influence of an inclined surface (ascending and descending) on the kinematic characteristics during gait of the diplegic group (DG) when compared to typically developing children of the control group (CG). Methods: Study participants included 20 children (10 with DG and 10 CG) matched by age, which were evaluated in three experimental conditions (horizontal and inclined ascending and inclined descending surfaces of 7º) through an optoelectronic imaging system. Results: Among the linear kinematic variables, only step width differed among groups, however, without influence of the surface. The foot height differed among the groups only in the descending phase, where DG had greater difficulty in raising the foot. The 3-dimensional gait analyses could not provide more evidences of differences in kinematics variables, especially in transverse plane, between DG and CG, but provide some evidence to support that hip range of motion (ROM) during the gait cycle, hip flexion-extension in initial contact, knee ROM and the 2nd anterior-posterior trunk peak amplitude of the DG were influenced on descent by their flexor pattern. Conclusion: The DG was most affected by the inclination plane than CG especially on descent. Although a hip and knee flexor pattern is evident for DG on inclination of 7º, this angle is accessible since it allows independent gait functional activity. Resumo Introdução: Crianças com diplegia apresentam dificuldades na marcha e rampas são utilizadas como estratégia de acessibilidade. Objetivo: O presente estudo investigou a influência da superfície inclinada (subida e descida) sobre as variáveis cinemáticas durante a marcha no grupo com diplegia (GD) comparado ao grupo de crianças com desenvolvimento típico no grupo controle (GC). Métodos: Participaram do estudo 20 crianças (10 GD e 10 GC) pareadas por idade, as quais foram avaliadas em 3 condições experimentais (horizontal, subida e descida de 7º) por meio de um sistema de imagem optoeletrônico. Resultados: Nas variáveis cinemáticas lineares apenas o comprimento do passo diferiu entre os grupos sem influência da inclinação do plano. A altura do pé diferiu entre os grupos na descida, com maior dificuldade do GD em elevar o pé. A análise tridimensional da marcha não permitiu identificar diferenças cinemáticas no plano transverso entre GD e GC, mas identificou que a ADM de quadril durante o ciclo de marcha, flexo-extensão de joelho no contato inicial, ADM de joelho e o 2º pico de amplitude de movimento (ADM) ântero-posterior de tronco do GD foram influenciadas na descida devido ao padrão flexor desse grupo. Conclusão: O GD foi mais afetado que o GC, especialmente na descida. Embora sejam evidenciados padrões de flexão de quadril e joelhos do GD na inclinação de 7º, essa angulação é acessível ao permitir marcha funcional independente.

Background Despite the enormous investment governments allocate to fight obesity, its worldwide prevalence is still on the rise. Moreover, the majority of the programs implemented are still targeting adults struggling with overweightness and focusing on transmitting knowledge about food. However, research shows that obesity prevention is more efficacious and cheaper, and beliefs about healthy eating have a stronger influence on eating behavior than declarative knowledge about food. In fact, knowledge about healthy eating only influences weight status when combined with self-regulation competences. Thus, the main goal of the current project is to develop and evaluate the efficacy of an online preventive intervention program, the HEP-S. This program is designed to promote and develop a set of transversal skills and strategies, related to self-regulation, on the healthy eating domain among school-aged children. Methods A three-armed randomized controlled trial will be conducted in several schools in Portugal. It will include a standard control group, with no intervention; an online intervention group, with the program for 20 weeks; and an enhanced online intervention group, with the program for 20 weeks embedded with gamification strategies throughout the program. Per research group, 40 groups of about 15 children each will be recruited and measured at five different time points. The three research groups will complete the same assessment protocol at the same timings (baseline, post-intervention, and 3, 6, and 9 months’ follow-ups). The assessment protocol will include anthropometric and psychological measures. The primary outcome measures will be the development of self-regulation skills for healthy eating over time, the development of self-efficacy attitudes, knowledge about healthy eating over time, and others. The secondary outcome measures will include the effect of gamification strategies, engagement, and satisfaction with the program, among others. The program will comprise the following: (i) a weekly group synchronous videoconference session with a trained educational psychologist serving as a mediator and (ii) a weekly parental involvement activity. Narratives, or story-tools, embedded with self-regulation strategies are at the core of the intervention. Discussion The program may play an important role in preventing risky and unhealthy eating behaviors by focusing on the development of self-regulation skills and strategies among elementary school children. The present study characterized the plasma glycemic and lipid profiles in full-term newborn babies at birth and correlated these variables with growth markers and maternal clinical and metabolic conditions, to observe if maternal pregnancy conditions can influence metabolic programming in these newborn babies. Anthropometric and biochemical data were collected from 162 mother/newborn binomials at birth and at 6 months at a public hospital in Western Paraná State, Brazil. Samples of blood tests for glucose, insulin, total cholesterol, and triglycerides were obtained. Two classes of mothers/babies were statistically defined. The glycemic profiles in Class 1, at birth, were 63.0 ± 19.6 mg/dL and at 6 months 80.4 ± 10.6 mg/dL; in Class 2, at birth, they were 66.1 ± 20.8 mg/dL and at 6 months 78.2 ± 9.4 mg/dL. The triglycerides levels in Class 1 and Class 2, at birth, were 124.5 ± 47.8 mg/dL and 132.6 ± 60.2 mg/dL, respectively, and at 6 months they were 139.0 ± 51.5 mg/dL and 115.2 ± 39.9 mg/dL, respectively. Even though most of the pregnant women were overweight at the end of the gestation period, the anthropometric patterns found for babies followed the desirable standards. Furthermore, the average glycemic profile values were between the cutoff standards at birth and at 6 months; however, the triglycerides were above the expected values.

The present study evaluated the phosphorus removal in a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR - 2,500L) used to treat the wastewater from an office building in two steps: phase I-Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) and phase II-co-precipitation using FeCl3 as precipitant. The raw sewage presented a high organic load variation ranging from 0.11 (phase I) to 0.66 (phase II) kgCOD.m-3.d-1. A better phosphorus removal performance was obtained during co-precipitation (from 19.0 to 1.2 mg.L-1 = 93% of efficiency) compared with biological removal (from 15.6 to 9.0 mgL-1 = 42% of efficiency). FISH analyses did not demonstrate a strong PAO inhibition; however, nitrifying and denitrifying organisms (NSO and PAE) showed a significant activity reduction during phase II. Therefore, the bench tests made to obtain the oxygen uptake rate (OUR) revealed a heterotrophic organisms activity significantly lower in phase II (46.8 mgDQOT.L-1) than phase I (211.8 mgDQOT.L-1), indicating metabolic inhibition. The co-precipitation processes enhanced phosphorus removal, bringing the SBR effluent into accord with state law requirements; however, the inhibitory effect of ferric chloride on microorganism activity was highlighted.

OBJECTIVE: How much force is needed to stretch skeletal muscle is still unknown. The aim of this study was to develop a device that mechanically stretches rat muscle to compare the force (N) required to stretch the soleus muscle of young and aged rats and the tibio-tarsal angle joint at neutral and stretched positions. METHODS: Twelve female Wistar rats were divided into two groups: a young group (YG, n=6, 311±11 g) of rats 3 months old and an aged group (AG, n=6, 351±43 g) of rats 15 months old. The left soleus muscle was mechanically held in full dorsal flexion and submitted to mechanical passive stretching: 1 bout of 10 repetitions, each repetition lasted 60 seconds with an interval of 45 seconds between repetitions, performed once a day, twice a week, for 1 week. The force required during stretching was measured by a load cell, and the tibio-tarsal angle joint was measured by photometry. RESULTS: The load cell calibration showed excellent reliability, as confirmed by the intraclass correlation coefficient value of 0.93. Objective: to evaluate sleep quality and daytime sleepiness of residents and medical students. Methods: we applied a socio-demographic questionnaire, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) to a population of residents and medical students. Results: hundred five residents and 101 undergraduate medical students participated. Residents presented higher mean PSQI (6.76±2.81) with poorer sleep quality when compared with undergraduates (5.90±2.39); Both had similar measures of sleepiness by ESS (p=0.280), but residents showed lower duration and lower subjective sleep quality. Conclusion: medical students and residents presented sleep deprivation, indicating the need for preventive actions in the medical area. RESUMO Objetivo: avaliar a qualidade de sono e a sonolência diurna de residentes comparando com estudantes de medicina. Método: foram aplicados questionário sociodemográfico, Índice de Qualidade do Sono de Pittsburg (PSQI) e Escala de Sonolência de Epworth (ESE) numa população de residentes e estudantes de medicina. Resultados: participaram 105 residentes e 101 estudantes da graduação médica. Os residentes apresentaram maior média do PSQI (6,76+2,81) com pior qualidade de sono quando comparados aos acadêmicos (5,90+2,39); ambos tiveram medidas semelhantes de sonolência pela ESE (p=0,280), porém os residentes mostraram menor duração e pior qualidade subjetiva de sono. Conclusão: estudantes e residentes apresentaram privação de sono indicando necessidade de ações preventivas na área médica.

Objective: To determine risk factors during neonatal hospital stay and follow-up associated with failure to thrive in the first year of life of very low birth weight newborns. Methods: Study of preterm very low birth weight newborns followed from 2006 to 2013 in a public institutional hospital program. The study included newborns that attended at least one appointment in each of the three periods: Period I, up to 3 months of corrected age (CA); Period II, 4–6 months of CA; and Period III, 7–12 months of CA. The variables were analyzed by logistic regression with XLSTAT 2014 software (Microsoft®, WA, USA). Failure to thrive (Z-score below −2 SD) was classified as a dichotomous dependent variable (0 – failure/1 – success), while the other variables were classified as explanatory variables for the hospitalization periods and for each of the follow-up periods (I, II, and III). Results: Children born adequate for gestational age increased the chance of Z-score for weight at discharge > −2 SD (OR = 10.217; 95% CI: 1.117–93.436). Metabolic bone disease and retinopathy of prematurity in Period I, as well as hospital readmissions in Periods II and III during follow-up increased the chance of Z-score

Purpose The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of mechanical vibration on the histomorphometry and oxidative stress of oophorectomized rats. Method Seventy-two Wistar rats were randomized to Pseudoophorectomy (P) and Oophorectomy (O) and subdivided into untreated animals and euthanized after four (P4 and O4) and eight (P8 and O8) weeks and animals treated during four (PT4 and OT4) and eight (PT8 and OT8) weeks. The treatment consisted of use of whole-body vibration for 10 min, three times a week. After euthanasia, the soleus muscle was collected. The general morphological analysis was performed in the right soleus muscle and then the cross-sectional area, the largest and the smallest diameter of the muscle fiber in 100 fibers per muscle, also the nuclei and capillary/fiber ratios, and percentage of connective tissue were measured. The left soleous was used for oxidative stress analysis. Results PT4 presented higher values in cross-sectional area than P4 and PT8, while O8 was lower than O4, P8 and OT8; for the fiber diameters, the oophorectomized animals had lower values than the pseudo-oophorectomized animals and the treatments values higher than the ones that had no treatment. In oxidative stress, O8 and OT8 presented higher lipoperoxidation, without any alterations to the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase and cholinesterase. Conclusion Whole-body vibration induced muscle hypertrophy in the pseudo-oophorectomized rats after four weeks, as well as being able to reverse the changes caused by the surgery in eight weeks in that variable.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar os efeitos da intervenção acupressura auricular na qualidade de vida de mulheres com câncer de mama em tratamento quimioterápico, em comparação com as que não utilizaram a intervenção. Método: Ensaio clínico randomizado com 54 mulheres, acompanhadas semanalmente por 12 semanas, sendo 27 no grupo intervenção, que utilizou esferas de cristal em seis acupontos (shenmen, rim, estômago, cárdia, tronco cerebral e endócrino), e 27 no grupo controle. A qualidade de vida foi mensurada em cinco etapas; a primeira, antes de iniciar a intervenção e as seguintes, a cada três semanas, com os instrumentos Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 e Quality of Life Questionnaire – Breast Cancer BR-23. Resultados: Houve melhora em todos os domínios relacionados à qualidade de vida; porém, a significância foi para náusea, vômito e sintomas da mama no grupo intervenção. Conclusão: Acupressura auricular mostrou-se como um método seguro, eficaz, de baixo custo, sem efeitos colaterais, facilmente aplicável por enfermeiros treinados. Pode ser recomendada como terapia complementar no tratamento do câncer de mama para melhorar a qualidade de vida dessas mulheres. A pesquisa foi cadastrada no Registro Brasileiro de Ensaios Clínicos com o código n° RBR-36zcfg. ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the effects of an auricular acupressure intervention on the quality of life of women with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy compared with those who did not undergo the intervention. Method: A randomized clinical trial with 54 women followed weekly for 12 weeks, with 27 being allocated to the intervention group in which crystal pellets were applied to six acupoints (shen men, kidney, stomach, cardia, brainstem and endocrine), and 27 in the control group. Quality of life was measured in five stages; the first before starting the intervention, and the following stages every three weeks using the Quality of Life Questionnaire - Core 30 and the Quality of Life Questionnaire - Breast Cancer BR-23 instruments. Results: There was improvement in all domains related to quality of life; however, there was significance regarding nausea, vomiting and breast symptoms in the intervention group. Conclusion: Auricular acupressure has proven to be a safe, effective, low cost method with no side effects and easily applicable by trained nurses. It may be recommended as complementary therapy in treating breast cancer to improve the quality of life of these women. The study was registered in the Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials with the code no. RBR-36zcfg. RESUMEN Objetivo: Evaluar los efectos de la intervención acupresura auricular en la calidad de vida de mujeres con cáncer de mama en tratamiento quimioterápico, en comparación con las que no utilizaron la intervención. Método: Ensayo clínico randomizado con 54 mujeres, seguidas semanalmente por 12 semanas, siendo 27 en el grupo intervención, que utilizó esferas de cristal en seis acupuntos (shenmen, riñón, estómago, cardias, tronco cerebral y endocrino), y 27 en el grupo control. La calidad de vida fue medida en cinco etapas; la primera, antes de iniciar la intervención, y las siguientes, cada tres semanas, con los instrumentos Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 y Quality of Life Questionnaire - Breast Cancer BR-23. Resultados: Hubo mejora en todos los dominios relacionados con la calidad de vida; sin embargo, la significación fue para náusea, vómito y síntomas de la mama en el grupo intervención. Conclusión: La acupresura auricular se mostró como un método seguro, eficaz, de bajo costo, sin efectos colaterales, fácilmente aplicable por enfermeros entrenados. Se puede recomendar como terapia complementaria en el tratamiento del cáncer de mama para mejorar la calidad de vida de dichas mujeres. Objetivou-se correlacionar as preocupações adicionais e o desempenho pessoal com a qualidade de vida geral/global dos pacientes adultos com câncer hematológico, hospitalizados para o transplante de células-tronco hematopoiéticas autólogo e alogênico.Estudo longitudinal, observacional e analítico, realizado em hospital público do sul do Brasil com 55 pacientes. A coleta de dados foi realizada entre setembro de 2013 e novembro de 2015. Foram utilizados os questionários sociodemográfico e clínico, Quality of Life Questionnarie Core-30 e o Functional Assessment of Câncer Therapy – Bone Marrow Transplant. Os dados foram avaliados com o auxílio do software Statística 7.0. A média de idade para o transplante autólogo foi de 45 anos, com predomínio do diagnóstico de mieloma múltiplo; para o alogênico foi de 31 anos com predomínio da leucemia. A qualidade de vida geral/global, o desempenho pessoal e as preocupações adicionais caracterizadas pela imagem corporal, fadiga, sexualidade e apetite apresentaram médias significativamente menores no período de pancitopenia em relação ao basal, com gradativa melhora no período pré-alta hospitalar. Conclui-se que o transplante é uma terapêutica com potencial papel de cura, no entanto, acarreta em impactos negativos nos domínios da qualidade de vida, desempenho pessoal, preocupações adicionais e na experiência de vida dos receptores.

Industry data for pet products has revealed that most Brazilian families have pets in their homes and that that humans give a large amount of attention to their pets. Oral diseases are among the most quickly perceived and treated of pet pathologies; and the most common of these is periodontal disease, which can affect the pulp and requires endodontic treatment. Recently, the evelopment of superelastic nickel-titanium alloys has revolutionized endodontic therapy, as the alloys have been used to develop novel rotary instruments. The goal of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of such rotary instruments in the ex vivo shaping of canine dental root canal therapy. The sample consisted of 40 canine incisors that had been extracted due to periodontal disease. The endodontic access procedure was performed, and the root canal was prepared using ProTaper® rotary instruments. Before and after shaping the canals, teeth were examined radiographically. The cervical, middle, and apical thirds were analyzed using the Image Lab® program. Introduction Physical exercise is indicated to reduce the incidence of musculoskeletal symptoms in teachers.Objective To evaluate the effects of muscular endurance training on muscle strength and musculoskeletal symptoms related to the lower limbs of public elementary school teachers.Materials and methods Thirty-one female teachers were divided into two groups: control (CG, n = 15) and muscular endurance training (TG, n = 16). The training consisted of two sets of 15 repetitions of exercises for quadriceps and hamstring muscle groups, twice a week, for 7 weeks, which were conducted with 50% of 10 repetition maximum(10RM) (first to fourth week) and 60% of 10 RM (fifth to seventh week). Musculoskeletal symptoms (Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire), isometric peak torque (Load cell) and muscle strength (10RM) were assessed before and after intervention. ANOVA for repeated measures and Tukey post hoc were used to analyse strength and peak torque of quadriceps and hamstrings and Chi-square goodness-of-fit test were used to analyse the frequency of occurrence of osteomuscular symptoms.Results The highest incidence of symptoms was found in the lumbar region in both groups. Training caused increased muscle strength of the quadriceps and hamstrings, but there were no significant differences in either the peak torque in the quadriceps and hamstrings or in the reduction of musculoskeletal symptoms.Conclusion The exercise program performed in this study increased the dynamic strength in the TG in relation to the CG, but did not alter the incidence of symptoms in the lumbar region and lower limbs in neither of the groups. Thus, results suggest that the duration of intervention may not have been enough to increase peak torque and decrease musculoskeletal symptoms. ResumoIntrodução A prática de exercício físico é indicada para reduzir a incidência de sintomas osteomusculares em professores.Objetivo Avaliar os efeitos do treinamento de resistência muscular na força muscular e nos sintomas osteomusculares relacionados aos membros inferiores de professoras do ensino público fundamental.Materiais e métodos Trinta e uma professoras foram divididas em dois grupos: controle (GC, n = 15) e treinamento de resistência muscular (GT, n = 16). O treinamento consistiu em 2 séries de 15 repetições de exercícios para quadríceps e isquiotibiais, 2 vezes por semana, durante 7 semanas, sendo realizados com 50% de 10 Repetições Máximas (10RM) (1a-4a semanas) e com 60% de 10RM (5a-7a semanas). Os sintomas osteomusculares (Questionário Nórdico), o pico de torque isométrico (célula de carga) e a força muscular (10 RM) foram avaliados antes e após a intervenção. Para a análise estatística foi realizado ANOVA para medidas repetidas, com acompanhamento do teste de Tukey post hoc para força e pico torque de quadriceps e isquiotibiais e o teste de Qui quadrado com bondade de ajuste para a frequência dos sintomas osteomusculares.Resultados A maior incidência de sintomas foi na região lombar em ambos os grupos. O treinamento promoveu aumento da força muscular de quadríceps e isquiotibiais, porém não houve diferenças significativas tanto no pico de torque isométrico de quadríceps e isquiotibiais quanto na diminuição dos sintomas osteomusculares.Conclusão O programa de exercícios realizado aumentou a força muscular dinâmica no GT em relação ao GC, porém não alterou a incidência dos sintomas na região lombar e nos membros inferiores em ambos os grupos. Assim, sugere-se que a duração da intervenção pode não ter sido suficiente para gerar o aumento de torque e reduzir os sintomas osteomusculares.

The objective of the study is to analyze the different dimensions of the longshoremen´s workload and its influence in the processes of health/disorder. The study characterizes itself as a transversal, descriptive and exploratory one and was developed between the years of 2010 and 2013 in the city of Paranagua, Parana. The sample was composed by 300 male subjects, union longshoremen belonging to the Labor Management Office ( in the original Orgao Gestor de Mao de Obra - OMGO ) of the State of Parana. Included in the data collection instruments were: a survey related to the profile of the interviewed professionals, a survey for the low back pain risk evaluation, Nordic survey and field observations. The analysis showed that they are workers with an average of 20 years of work, in an activity marked by family or friendship relationships, in which not only important physical demands are present, but also mental demands are not negligible. There are many health issues like the very high risk of low back pain (74, 7%), and a very frequent feeling of mental and physical tiredness at the end of a workday. Those who feel more tired are also those with more musculoskeletal complaints in various body regions. The data indicate an association between work organization and mental work load.

AIMS the purpose of this study was to assess the effects of a supervised dance intervention based on video game choreography on isokinetic concentric and eccentric knee peak of torque (PT), quadriceps and hamstrings cross sectional area (CSA) and functionality in community-dwelling older women. METHODS Forty-seven older women were allocated in Control Group (CG, n=25) and Intervention Group (IG, n=22). The IG performed dance based on video game choreography (Dance Central, XBOX 360®, Kinect), during 12 weeks, ~40 minutes, 3x/week, without foam (1-6week) and with foam and visual disturbances (7-12 week). The pretest-training-posttest assessments included: isokinetic concentric and eccentric knee PT and CSA (Magnetic resonance imaging) of quadriceps and hamstrings and functional tests. RESULTS The light-to-moderate-intensity 12-weeks training increased 8.5% the eccentric PT of quadriceps at 60°/s (p=0.04) and 1.3% quadriceps CSA (p=0.02). CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that dance training based on video game choreography can enhance PT and induce hypertrophy in community-dwelling older women.

Here, we evaluated whether the exposure of rats to a cafeteria diet pre- and/or post-weaning, alters histological characteristics in the White Adipose Tissue (WAT), Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT), and liver of adult male offspring. Female Wistar rats were divided into Control (CTL; fed on standard rodent chow) and Cafeteria (CAF; fed with the cafeteria diet throughout life, including pregnancy and lactation). After birth, only male offspring (F1) were maintained and received the CTL or CAF diets; originating four experimental groups: CTL-CTLF1; CTL-CAFF1; CAF-CTLF1; CAF-CAFF1. Data of biometrics, metabolic parameters, liver, BAT and WAT histology were assessed and integrated using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA). According to PCA analysis worse metabolic and biometric characteristics in adulthood are associated with the post-weaning CAF diet compared to pre and post weaning CAF diet. Thus, the CTL-CAFF1 group showed obesity, higher deposition of fat in the liver and BAT and high fasting plasma levels of glucose, triglycerides and cholesterol. Interestingly, the association between pre and post-weaning CAF diet attenuated the obesity and improved the plasma levels of glucose and triglycerides compared to CTL-CAFF1 without avoiding the higher lipid accumulation in BAT and in liver, suggesting that the impact of maternal CAF diet is tissue-specific.

The use of multiple biomarkers has been shown to be an efficient method for evaluating environmental contamination. In this work, we evaluate neurotoxic effects and the antioxidant system responses of the R. branneri collected in two streams of lower Iguazu River basin, relating them with different percentage of vegetation coverture, presence of pesticides and fall and winter seasons. The biological samples were collected in March and August of 2015, from two streams that belong to the lower Iguazu River basin (Brazil): the Manoel Gomes River and the Arquimedes Stream. Soil analyses were performed, and the results showed the presence of the following organophosphates in the Manoel Gomes River and the Arquimedes Stream: disulfoton, methyl parathion, and ronnel. The present study detected inhibition of cholinesterase activity in the brain and muscle of fish samples during the fall from the Manoel Gomes River and the Arquimedes Stream. In the Manoel Gomes River, elevated lipoperoxidation was also observed during the fall. It was observed that the increase or decrease of biomarkers was related to temporal variation and, possibly, to the exposure of animals to agrochemicals. Although the Manoel Gomes River and the Arquimedes Stream are located in regions with large areas of vegetation, the soil analyses show that agrochemical residues are able to reach these locations, which suggests that the fauna are in contact with oxidant and anti-cholinesterase agents during the fall, in addition to respond differently during each season.
