Background: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have poor outcomes following myocardial infarction (MI). We performed an untargeted examination of 175 biomarkers to identify those with the strongest association with CKD and to examine the association of those biomarkers with long-term outcomes. Methods: A total of 175 different biomarkers from MI patients enrolled in the Swedish Web-System for Enhancement and Development of Evidence-Based Care in Heart Disease Evaluated According to Recommended Therapies (SWEDEHEART) registry were analysed either by a multiple reaction monitoring mass spectrometry assay or by a multiplex assay (proximity extension assay). Random forests statistical models were used to assess the predictor importance of biomarkers, CKD and outcomes. Results: A total of 1098 MI patients with a median estimated glomerular filtration rate of 85 mL min−1/1.73 m2 were followed for a median of 3.2 years. The random forests analyses, without and with adjustment for differences in demography, comorbidities and severity of disease, identified six biomarkers (adrenomedullin, TNF receptor-1, adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein-4, TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand receptor 2, growth differentiation factor-15 and TNF receptor-2) to be strongly associated with CKD. All six biomarkers were also amongst the 15 strongest predictors for death, and four of them were amongst the strongest predictors of subsequent MI and heart failure hospitalization. Conclusion: In patients with MI, a proteomic approach could identify six biomarkers that best predicted CKD. These biomarkers were also amongst the most important predictors of long-term outcomes. Thus, these biomarkers indicate underlying mechanisms that may contribute to the poor prognosis seen in patients with MI and CKD. (Less)

This study explores the differences in the profile of relationships between sensory processing and attention abilities among children with sensory processing disorder (SPD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and typically developing (TD) children. The Test of Everyday Attention for Children (TEA-Ch), a performance-based measure of attention, was administered to 69 children (TD: n = 24; SPD: n = 21; ASD: n = 24), ages 6-10 years. All participants' parents completed the Short Sensory Profile (SSP), a standardized parent-report measure of sensory-related behaviors. Discriminant analyses using the TEA-Ch and the SSP domains revealed two classification functions; the first revealed that both clinical groups significantly differed from the TD group with greater sensory processing challenges in the categories of auditory filtering, under-responsive/seeks sensation, low energy/weak, and taste/smell sensitivity subscales of the SSP. The second function discriminated between the two clinical groups, indicating that children with ASD had significantly greater control and sustained attention deficits and less sensory issues than did children with SPD. Together, the two functions correctly classified 76.8% of the participants as to their group membership. The different profiles of sensory processing and attention abilities in children with SPD and ASD may provide guidance in identifying appropriate individualized therapeutic strategies for these children.

This study examined how peer relationships contribute to young adolescents’ adaptation in the face of exposure to community and family violence. It tested hypotheses about peers’ role in processes relating exposure to behavioral and psychological outcomes, specifically, aggression and anxiety. Data were collected from 667 middle school students, followed from sixth grade to eighth grade, in a high crime urban school district, and from their parents and classmates. Friends’ antisocial behavior mediated the relationship between violence exposure and later aggressive behavior. A bias toward hostile attribution contributed to, but did not alone explain, the relationship. Friends’ prosocial behavior failed to moderate the association between exposure and later aggressive behavior. Social acceptance moderated the relationship between exposure and later anxiety when exposure was low, but not when it was high. Peer intimacy/closeness, while demonstrating a direct, inverse effect on anxiety, failed to moderate the association between violence exposure and anxiety.

Mixtures of LaOCl and LaCl3 are promising catalysts for oxidative chlorination of methane to methyl chloride. The influence of metal dopants such as Co, Ni and Ce, which form stable chlorides under anticipated reaction conditions, on physicochemical and catalytic properties was explored. The presence of markedly redox-active dopants such as cobalt and cerium lead to a higher rate of methane conversion. However, the formed methyl chloride is strongly adsorbed and directly oxidized to CO leading to low methyl chloride selectivity. Doping with nickel weakens, in contrast, the interaction with methyl chloride leading to high methyl chloride selectivity.

Psychiatric disorders of 142 parents of adolescents who were documented as physically abused during adolescence and 168 parents of non-abused comparison adolescents were assessed. Fathers and mothers of physically abused adolescents exhibited higher rates of Axis I diagnoses and co-occurring disorders, and had more impaired GAS scores than comparison parents. Fathers of abused adolescents had greater lifetime incidence of Conduct Disorder and Substance Abuse/Dependence than comparison fathers. Mothers of abused adolescents had more unipolar depressive disorders than comparison mothers. This study highlights the importance of mental health assessments and interventions for parents of physically abused adolescents. Since onsets of parental psychiatric disorders antedated the abuse, early recognition and treatment of parental disorders may contribute to prevention of the onset and/or reoccurrence of adolescent physical abuse.

LaCl3 is an active and selective catalyst for oxidative chlorination of methane to methyl chloride, generated in situ by chlorination from LaOCl. The latter is prepared by precipitation of La(OH)2Cl and subsequent calcination. The synthesis route was modified by using different bases in order to synthesize high surface area LaOCl catalyst precursors. Ammonium hydroxide and the organic bases tetraethylammonium hydroxide, tetrapropylammonium hydroxide, and tetrabutylammonium hydroxide are used as precipitating agents. The marked increase of the specific surface area by using organic bases indicates also that they may act as templating agents. After chlorination the specific surface areas of pure LaOCl samples decrease drastically, lanthanum carbonate, however, acts as structural promoter stabilizing the specific surface area during chlorination.

The role of aggression in adaptation to family and community violence was examined in a sample of 667 inner-city schoolchildren studied annually over three years in middle school. Regression analyses indicated that the association between Year 1 exposure to family and community violence and Year 2 aggression was mediated by aggression occurring contemporaneously with Year 1 exposure. Cognitive justification of aggression and friends' delinquency made small independent contributions to prediction of Year 2 aggression, delinquency, and externalizing behaviors. Year 2 aggression mediated the association between Year 1 community violence victimization and Year 3 negative adaptation (internalizing problems, anxiety, and depression). Year 2 aggression also mediated the negative association between Year 1 witnessing community violence and Year 3 positive adaptation (self-esteem). Cognitive justification of aggression and friends' delinquency made independent contributions to Year 3 negative adaptation. The pattern of relations among variables infrequently varied by gender. The roles of social support and coping as intervening processes between exposure to community violence and internalizing symptoms were examined longitudinally among a community sample of 667 middle school students in the inner city. After controlling for potential confounders (e.g., social desirability, victimization and witnessing of family violence, guardian's psychological symptomatology), internalizing symptoms at Year 2 were predicted by hypothesized changes over 1 year, such that increased community violence exposure, decreased guardian and peer support, and increased use of defensive and confrontational behavioral coping were related to more internalizing symptoms of anxiety, depression and PTSD, although some of these relations varied by gender. The relations between internalizing symptoms at Year 3 and increased changes in exposure to community violence over 2 years were moderated by social support and/or coping, such that decreased guardian support and increased use of defensive and confrontational coping were generally associated with more symptoms for boys exposed to community violence. Girls who witnessed increased community violence and who increased their use of defensive or confrontational coping experienced more internalizing symptoms. The findings underscore the importance of developmental and contextual considerations in the design and implementation of interventions.

Objectives To determine whether preadolescent physical abuse raises the risk of adolescent suicidal behavior, to examine potential mediators and moderators of the relationship between preadolescent abuse and adolescent suicidality, and to examine whether distal (preadolescent) risk factors add to proximal (adolescent) factors in predicting suicidality. Method Seventy-five physically abused preadolescents on the New York City Maltreatment Register and 78 controls were studied at ages 10.5 and 16.5 years. Adolescent suicidal ideation and attempts and hypothesized risk and protective factors were assessed by self-report, parent interview, and teacher ratings. Data were analyzed by logistic regression. Results Preadolescent physical abuse was a robust, largely unmediated, independent predictor of adolescent suicidality. Only adolescent internalizing problems mediated the relationship. No risk factors moderated the relationship. Adolescent attachment to parents and internalizing problems contributed independently to the prediction of suicidality risk in abused and control subjects. No preadolescent risk or protective factors added to the predictions beyond risk deriving from preadolescent abuse. Conclusions The association between preadolescent physical abuse and adolescent suicidality is largely unmediated and unmoderated by well-documented risk factors for suicidality. Therefore, comprehensive interventions to reduce abusive parenting must begin when families enter the child protection system, along with therapeutic interventions with the children and adolescents themselves.

The definition and classification of maltreatment and the assessment of its effects have serious implications for child protection and intervention. The present study seeks to clarify a number of interrelated issues involved in the assessment of the effects of child maltreatment.The study tested, within the context of an ecological model, the relative utility of two sources of information about child abuse, Child Protective Services records and parent interviews, for their ability to account for child functioning. The model is based on an ecological approach that places risk factors along a proximal/distal continuum with respect to the expected impact on the child. Risk for poor child functioning was found to increase as increasingly distal as well as proximal risk factors were included. A sample of 100 physically abused schoolchildren, ages 9–11, and their families was obtained from a pool of consecutive entries onto the New York State Register for Child Abuse. Information about child physical abuse and family functioning was obtained from NYS Child Protective Services records and a structured parent interview. Child functioning was measured by the Child Behavior Checklist (Achenbach, 1991a) and the Teacher Rating Form (Achenbach, 1991b). The findings suggest that for the purpose of evaluating risk factors for poor outcome in physically abused children, with the ultimate aim of improving protection and intervention, it is critical to gather information systematically from multiple sources about the abuse and the family context in which it occurs because both are predictive of child functioning, and different information about both is contributed by the different sources. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Objective. This study, like earlier studies that focused on younger abused children, ascertained whether physically abused adolescents exhibited increased internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Relevance to pediatric practice is discussed. Design. A cross-sectional design was used to compare the behavior of physically abused adolescents and comparison adolescents using self-reports, parent reports, and teacher reports. The level of agreement among raters was also examined. Participants. The subjects were 99 physically abused adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 years, who were recruited from Child Protective Services. Comparison subjects were 99 community-recruited nonabused adolescents who were matched for age, gender, and income with the abused adolescents. Measures. The behavior of the adolescents was assessed using the Child Behavior Checklist, and the comparable Youth Self-Report and Teacher Report Form, which are widely used measures of behavioral and emotional problems. The Child Global Assessment Scale was also used as a measure of functional impairment and of the need for mental health services. Results. Parents and teachers rated the problems of abused adolescents as significantly greater than the problems of nonabused adolescents on all checklist subscales. Abused adolescents reported significantly greater problems only on externalizing behavior subscales. In addition, based on interviewer ratings, physically abused adolescents exhibited significantly greater functional impairment. Conclusions. Similar to previous research on abused children, physically abused adolescents exhibit externalizing and internalizing behavior problems and experience greater functional impairment. Parent, teacher, and adolescent reports of externalizing behaviors were similar, but physically abused adolescents reported fewer internalizing behaviors than did the other informants.

Objective: To identify demographic, family, parent, and child factors prospectively associated with risk for child abuse and neglect among families in the community, using data on child maltreatment obtained from both official records and youth self-reports. Method: Surveys assessing demographic variables, family relationships, parental behavior, and characteristics of parents and children were administered to a representative sample of 644 families in upstate New York on four occasions between 1975 and 1992. Data on child abuse and neglect were obtained from New York State records and retrospective self-report instruments administered when youths were ≥ 18 years old. Results: Logistic regression analyses indicated that different patterns of risk factors predicted the occurrence of physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect, although maternal youth and maternal sociopathy predicted the occurrence of all three forms of child maltreatment. In addition, the prevalence of child abuse or neglect increased from 3% when no risk factors were present to 24% when ≥ 4 risk factors were present. State records and self-reports of child maltreatment did not correspond in most cases when maltreatment was reported through at least one data source, underlining the importance of obtaining data from both official records and self-reports. Conclusions: Assessment of a number of risk factors may permit health professionals to identify parents and children who are at high risk for child maltreatment, facilitating appropriate implementation of prevention and treatment interventions.

This study’s primary aims were to examine whether a sample of young adults, aged 23 to 31, who had been documented as physically abused by their parent(s) during adolescence would be more likely to aggress, both physically and verbally, against their intimate partners compared with nonabused young adults and whether abuse history was (along with other risk factors) a significant predictor of intimate partner physical and emotional violence perpetration or victimization. In this longitudinal study, 67 abused and 78 nonabused adults (of an original sample of 198 adolescents) completed the Modified Conflict Tactics Scale and the Jealousy and Emotional Control Scales. Nonabused comparison adolescents were matched for age, gender, and community income. As adults, participants with abuse histories had significantly higher rates of intimate partner physical violence and verbal aggression than did comparison participants. Multivariate logistic regressions indicated that adults with histories of physical abuse were more than twice as likely to be physically violent and almost six times more likely to be verbally aggressive to their intimate partners than were comparison participants. Having had an alcohol use disorder, being married to or living with a partner, and perceiving one’s partner as controlling were also significantly associated with physical violence. Jealousy and feeling controlled by one’s partner were also significant predictors of verbal aggression. These findings underscore the importance of preventing adolescent abuse as a means of decreasing the incidence of intimate partner physical violence in adulthood.

Rats were sham exposed or exposed perinatally to a 60-Hz electromagnetic field, 22 days in utero and the first 8 days post partum. Each of the 30 once-daily exposures was 20 h in duration. The electric component of the field was vertical 30 kV/m rms, and the magnetic field component was 100 microTG rms. Later, as adults, male rats were trained to emit an operant response when reinforced with food on a multiple, random-interval schedule. Exposed rats (N = 21) gradually came to respond at significantly lower rates than did sham-exposed controls (N = 20). This finding was confirmed and extended in a second, independently performed experiment. After a sequence including operant conditioning followed by experimental extinction of responding and then by a suspension of conditioning and finally by more than a month of reconditioning, slower rates of responding were found to persist in the adult animals. The evidence of altered behavior several months after combined, fetal-neonatal exposure to an electromagnetic field presents an interesting contrast with other findings: Field-exposed rats did not differ from sham-exposed rats in terms of body mass, physical appearance, grossly observed activity level, or incidence of disease.

The relationship between abuse and psychiatric diagnoses was investigated in two groups of physically abused adolescents, 57 living in homes with interparental violence and 32 in homes without such violence, and in 96 nonabused adolescents living in nonviolent homes. Adolescents in the first group were found to be at greater risk for depression, separation anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder than were those in the second group. Adolescents in the first group also appeared more vulnerable to anxiety and depression.

This study investigated the use of the immediacy theory to explain the existence of auditory hallucinations and delusions in individuals with schizophrenia and to develop treatment strategies. In a 2-phase approach, a therapist trained 6 individuals with schizophrenia to stop responding to the immediate stimuli ostensibly evoking their symptoms and instead to respond to more remote stimuli unrelated to the problem behavior. Two other participants received nonspecific supportive psychotherapy to control for rater bias and to provide some comparison to the experimental treatment. Following 6 weeks of therapy, participants in the experimental group improved on 66% of the symptom measures. By contrast, participants in the control group improved on only 11% of the measures. The individuals in the experimental group retained some of these benefits during the follow-up period. The findings are discussed in light of several contributory factors.

Objective The rate of suicide attempts and the exposure to risk factors for suicide in an unselected sample of confirmed cases of physically abused adolescents recruited directly from the New York State Central Register for Nassau and Suffolk Counties was compared with those of a community sample of nonabused adolescents. Method Semistructured and structured diagnostic interviews were used in the assessment of psychopathology of adolescents and their parents. Results The proportion of adolescents attempting suicide did not differ for the two groups. However, the abused adolescents showed significantly greater exposure to risk factors for adolescent suicide, including family disintegration, and diagnoses of depression, disruptive behavior disorders, and substance abuse and dependence. Comparisons of the 8 physically abused adolescents who attempted suicide with the 91 who did not attempt suicide showed that the following factors were associated with significantly greater risk for suicide attempts: adolescents' perceptions of their families as lacking cohesiveness and maternal support, higher adolescent ‘hostility’ ideation scores, adolescent diagnoses of disruptive disorders and conduct disorders, adolescent substance abuse/dependence, and exposure to a suicide attempt by a family member or a friend. Conclusion A transactional model of abuse, family and personal stressors, and the development of adolescent vulnerability leading to psychopathology is offered to explain the results.

This review consists not of the contribution of a single author, but of several of the staff members of the Biometrics Research Unit (BRU) of the New York State Department of Mental Hygiene. Since we believe that such fields as abnormal and clinical psychology can no longer be reviewed adequately by one worker, this review may mark a turning point in future reviews of similar fields. The BRU was established in 1956 with the mandate to provide an objective assessment of the behavior of mentally disordered individuals with the view of improving diagnosis, prognosis, and evaluation of outcome of mental disorders, as well as promoting investigations into etiology and prevention. This chapter reviews some of the accomplishments of this endeavor on the part of the BRU staff, as well as by similar staffs and research workers elsewhere. A functional analysis was performed on the physically assaultive behaviour emitted during the dyadic free‐play interactions recorded on videotape of ten inner‐city school‐age disruptive children withdrawn from regular school classes and placed in a therapeutic day program at a psychiatric facility. The study revealed that discriminative stimuli inherent within the social context of play exerted cognitive control over the initiation of physically assaultive behaviours; specifically, the gender of both initiator and recipient of assaults, the context (real vs. fantasy play), and peer familiarity affected the rate and duration of aggressive behaviour. Implications for understanding the behaviour of disruptive children are discussed.

Control over the vocal responses of three dogs was established using operant-conditioning procedures. Several points of interest were observed in the data. First, fixed-ratio schedules of reinforcement generated a vocal response topography which was similar in detail to that of a “motor” bar-nosing response. Second, vocal responding was brought under the control of external visual stimuli as a result of differential reinforcement. Third, good stimulus control was maintained on a multiple schedule containing a vocal-response component and a bar-response component. Fourth, the stimulus control on the multiple schedule transferred with minimal disruption to a chain schedule requiring a sequence of 10 bar responses followed by 10 vocal responses. Fifth, because vocal and bar responses are not mutually exclusive, concurrent responding tended to develop on the chain schedule. These results were discussed with reference to the advisability of applying the terms operant and respondent to unconditioned behavior, and, particularly, to unconditioned verbal behavior.

Two groups of goldfish were trained to strike a small target for food reinforcement. One group was injected with puromycin, the other with saline, immediately following training. On testing. 2 days later, puromycin fish performed as well as saline controls.

This study is an assessment of the amount of intellectual and behavioral dysfunction found in children from families in which child maltreatment has occurred. It reports differences in the information obtained from parents and teachers. The clinical implications of the results suggest the incorporation of parent training in developmental issues in programs which treat maltreating families and the use of teachers for more accurately assessing all the children in these families.

Seventy-six parents of abused and neglected children who were referred for psychiatric treatment to a child abuse and neglect treatment program in a general medical hospital were compared to 38 control parents of nonmaltreated pediatric outpatients of the same hospital in terms of the presence of diagnosed psychopathology. The psychiatric assessment was made using a standard semistructured instrument, the SADS-L, and was based on Research Diagnostic Criteria. Abusive and neglectful parents were more frequently given psychiatric diagnoses than were control parents, and perpetrators of abuse were given diagnoses different from their nonabusing spouses.

Everyone is willing to concede that learning is an activity which takes place in school. The psychologist’s claim for the concept of learning is much wider. According to him, the human organism learns not only academic subjects, but also to dance, talk, and play baseball; to make friends and enemies; to persuade people and be persuaded by them; to act like a model child or like a brat; to be the life of the party or a social recluse; to fear cats or love them; to be neurotic or well-adjusted; to be a precise observer or a poor witness; to be an artist or a plumber; and so forth. There is also an increasing amount of evidence, as we shall see, that learning is at least implicated in, if not the major cause of, hallucinations, delusions, stuttering, and psychosomatic illnesses like ulcers, hysterical blindness, bedwetting, and depression.
