Antecedentes: el traumatismo de tórax es una patología desafiante debido a que existe compromiso de órganos vitales, con posibilidad de falla multiorgánica y muerte. Objetivo: determinar la frecuencia y la severidad del trauma de tórax en pacientes atendidos en el Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso y José Carrasco Arteaga, periodo 2018. Materiales y métodos: se trata de un estudio descriptivo transversal. La muestra estuvo constituida por 248 pacientes con trauma de tórax que cumplieron los criterios de inclusión. Los datos se recolectaron mediante un formulario diseñado por el autor. La estadística descriptiva fue con las medidas de centralización (media) y dispersión (DS) para las variables cuantitativas, y para las cualitativas con valores de frecuencia y porcentaje. La información se tabuló en el software estadístico SPSS v. 15. Resultados: la frecuencia de trauma de tórax fue 17,2%, promedio de edad 42,03 años (±DS 18,74), el 60% sexo masculino; además, el 30% tenían trauma toracoabdominal; la etiología por caída de altura (26,2%), el 80% trauma cerrado, y el 50% de ellos directo. En los traumas abiertos, la lesión fue arma blanca (20%). Las complicaciones fueron: hemotórax (85,1%), hemo neumotórax (6,5%), en el 60% de los casos hubo un manejo quirúrgico, y de estos, la intervención más frecuente fue el drenaje pleural; el nivel severidad fue leve (60%). Conclusiones: el trauma de tórax fue más en el sexo masculino, de etiología por caída de altura, y la complicación más común el hemotórax, y severidad leve Background: Chest trauma is a challenging pathology because there is a vital organ involvement, with the possibility of multiorgan failure and death.
