In the summer 2003, an evaluation of Danida's rural development programme in Eastern and Coastal Provinces of Kenya took place. This external evaluation, commissioned by Danida's independent evaluation service, was unusual not least because each of the five evaluation teams included Kenya professionals as evaluators, a rare occurrence despite the current level of evaluation requirements. The evaluation covered the period from 1998 to 2003.

This paper introduces a series of African and Asian case studies on environment and development. It explores the tension between optimistic and pessimistic interpretations of environmental maintenance and transformation. It critically examines political ecology and eco-populism before analysing underlying models of governance, social justice and human rights. Key concepts in understanding the relationship between environment and development are discussed, including security, sustainable livelihoods, coping and entitlements. The paper ends with a discussion of marginality and vulnerability with particular attention to urban and informal sector environments.

Consultant paediatrician Bridgend 1972-2000 (b Penrhyndeudraeth, Meirionydd, 1934; q Liverpool 1958; FRCPCH, FRCP, DCH), died from a heart attack on 3 May 2003.​2003. Figure 1 Trefor did national service in Canada before returning to Wales as a paediatric registrar in Bangor. After a spell as research fellow at Alder Hey he returned to Canada as associate professor of paediatrics at the University of Saskatchewan. In 1972 he came back to Wales to become the first consultant paediatrician based at Bridgend. He remained singlehanded for the first seven years and laid the foundations of a modern paediatric department. He was a founder member of the Welsh Paediatric Society and served as medical director of the Bridgend and District NHS Trust. He leaves a wife, Peggy, and three daughters.
