This essay focuses on the historiography of the medieval sculpture, “The Bamberg Horseman” in Bamberg Cathedral, Germany. Hinz argues that the statue was interpreted and exploited as a vehicle for the ideological definition and redefinition of German national identity. Hinz’s text is based on a close textual analysis of successive art historical readings of the statue, over the period 1836 to 1962.
