The aim of this study was to examine factors that affect intention to access psychological services in a sample of British Muslims of South Asian origin. It was hypothesised that the level of shame/izzat associated with mental health would predict intention to access services when controlling for other, more established, predictors. Ninety-four participants were recruited from community UK centres and online sources. Results indicated that shame/izzat and biological beliefs predicted lesser intent to access psychological services, whereas higher levels of acculturation and education predicted greater intention. Further analyses suggested differences between people that had migrated to Britain and those born in the United Kingdom. Higher education levels predicted greater intention for all participants. The article focuses on an historical relationship between the political institution of chieftaincy and civic pride in Ibadan, a Yoruba city in south-western Nigeria. It examines this relationship against the scholarly model of ‘Yoruba urbanism’ and argues that this model is empirically and conceptually flawed. Drawing on oral and documentary historical sources, the article explores how a ‘civic Ibadan’ was made through practices of settlement, civil disorder and external warfare during the pre-colonial period. The analysis adds to recent debates about the concept of ‘historical materialism’ in the urban past.

The article focuses on a political controversy which occurred in Ibadan, a city in south-western Nigeria, during 1939. At face value, the contentious issue was a particular design of damask cloth. Ruth Watson suggests that the controversy was actually far more complex and argues that it cannot be understood unless one develops an historical reading of political culture in the city. This reading explores the cultural/symbolic meanings of political practices and how, at certain times, these practices served to generate material forms of civic power.

The 1984 bill to separate midwifery from nursing practice in New York State is commented upon from the point of view of the arguments in favor of separation and the differing opinions of the author. It is suggested that such separation might appear to be motivated by other than a concern for the improvement of maternity care. Various facets of the bill are discussed in relation to the ACNM's decision to seek separate statutes.

This address, marking the 50th anniversary of nurse-midwifery education in the United States and presented at the 1982 annual meeting of the ACNM, focuses on the author's position for continued inclusion of nursing as an integral part of midwifery education. The role of nurses and nursing in promulgating the rebirth of American midwifery is discussed as are the advantages to both families and professionals in retaining a nursing heritage. A strong plea is made for recognizing the extraordinary accomplishments of the ACNM in ensuring competence and quality within the profession and the crucial role that alliances with less well-prepared or standardized providers might play in diluting the effects and hard-won gains of the profession of nurse-midwifery. The author closes with a reminder of any profession's responsibility to society and its need for humility in carrying forward its affairs.
