Background: Smoking is a serious public health challenge across the world. Fasting in Ramadan requires people to stay away from smoking as well as activities such as eating, drinking, and sexual intercourse. We examined the effect of fasting on cigarette smoking and nicotine addiction during the Ramadan. Methodology: This study was designed as a descriptive cross-sectional survey. A questionnaire was prepared to determine sociodemographic data and smoking habits of a sample population. The questionnaire was delivered through face-to-face interviews at several family medicine clinics in Turkey, with smokers who fast in Ramadan. Results: There were 354 persons, of which 278 were male (78.5%), 76 were female (21.5%), and the mean age was 32.92 ± 11.84 years. A significant decrease in cigarette consumption during the Ramadan was reported by 285 (80.5%) smokers (p < .001). The number of smokers who had difficulty resisting the urge to smoke was less in Ramadan than non-Ramadan periods (p < .001). Religious sentiments were reported as the most important reason for coping with nicotine abstinence (53.7%). Significantly in 14.7% of the cases, participants stopped smoking during the whole period of Ramadan. Conclusions: Religious beliefs and willpower were found to be effective in helping people reduce or temporary stop smoking. Fasting may play a significant role in changing smoking behavior. Smoking cessation along with counseling supported by the state, health authorities, and clergy can be useful in the fight against smoking in Ramadan.

The aim of this survey is to determine the relation between piety and psychological resilience for adults. Accordingly, a sample group of 443 participants was formed, including 207 men and 236 women who were working in 6 seperate public institutions in Antalya province. In order to determine the religious attitudes and behaviours of the sample group, “A Scale of Motivational Piety” was used, and “A Scale of Psychological Resilience for Adults” was used to measure their psychological resilience. The statistical analysis of the obtained data was carried out on a packaged software called SPSS for Windows 11.5, and substantiating factor analysis was carried out on a packaged software called Lisrel 8.7. According to the data obtained, there was a significant difference between demographic variables, piety and psychological resilience. In the survey, a positive significant correlation between motivational piety and psychological resilience was discovered., Bu araştırmanın amacı, yetişkinlerde dindarlık ve psikolojik dayanıklılık arasındaki ilişkiyi tespit etmektir. Bu doğrultuda, Antalya ilinde 6 farklı kamu kuruluşunda çalışan 207 erkek ve 236 kadın olmak üzere toplam 443 kişilik bir örneklem grubu oluşturulmuştur. Örneklem grubunun dini tutum ve davranışlarını belirlemek için “Motivasyonel Dindarlık Ölçeği”, psikolojik dayanıklılıklarını ölçmek için ise “Yetişkinler için Psikolojik Dayanıklılık Ölçeği” kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen verilerin istatistiksel analizi SPSS for Windows 11.5 paket programında, doğrulayıcı faktör analizi ise Lisrel 8.7. paket programında yapılmıştır. Bulgulara göre; demografik değişkenler ile dindarlık ve psikolojik dayanıklılık arasında anlamlı farklılıklar söz konusudur. Araştırmada motivasyonel dindarlık ile psikolojik dayanıklılık arasında pozitif yönde anlamlı bir ilişkinin olduğu tespit edilmiştir.

One of the ways of the proper reading of fourteen centuries-old Islamic civilization is to examine the distinguished personalities who had been raised by this civilization. Because every civilization could survive with religion, culture, tradition, history, as well as with the people being bloomed and tranined by itself. Especially in critical periods of nations, these personalities are the factors of being driving force, strengthening the determination, shaping the society makes them even more important. In this study, Hasan Basri Cantay’s, who is one of our Islamic scholars who put psychological building blocks of the traditional and cultural values, difficult times, suicide and mental fatigue will be examined. At the same time, the examples of our intellectuals such as Mehmet Akif Ersoy and Elmalili Hamdi Yazir who are contemporaries with Hasan Basri Cantay will be provided. In the second part of the study, this information will be analyzed in the light of modern psychology; Hasan Basri Cantay’in suicidal thoughts and mental fatigue will be discussed accordance with anxiety and death anxiety shown by existential psychotherapy and cultural psychiatry.
